Members of the New York-based organization, Carriacou and Petite Martinique 2000 Inc., have been highly praised for their charitable work and donations.

The organization, whose motto is “Lending a Helping Hand�, has sponsored the annual Spelling Bee Competition held among primary schools in Carriacou & Petite Martinique. It has also contributed to healthcare on the islands, and financed the award of ten (10) full scholarships to students who attend the T.A. Marryshow Community College, Six Roads Campus.

GENDER & FAMILY AFFAIRS DIVISION OF GENDER & FAMILY AFFAIRS RECOGNIZES WOMEN CAREGIVERS Carriacou, like other parts of the nation, paid tribute to women on the just-concluded observance of International Women's Day. As part of the commemoration on the sister island, the Division of Gender & Family Affairs within the Ministry of Carriacou & Petite Martinique Affairs held a special recognition day for female caregivers.

Gender Coordinator Vinishah Cudjoe presented food baskets to the women of the Christine David Child Development Centre, Top Hill Senior Citizens Home and the Hermitage Nursing Home.

Ms. Cudjoe said the presentations were done in recognition of the tremendous efforts of the women who provide caring services to children and the elderly.

Each year around the world, International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8.

NEW EQUIPMENT FOR PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT In keeping with Government’s policy to improve the road network and general infrastructure of the island, the Public Works Department within the Ministry of Carriacou & Petite Martinique Affairs has received two new machines, a backhoe and a stoneroller.

The machines were purchased from Trintrac Ltd. based in Trinidad and the company’s Managing Director, Andrew Bernard and Technical Support & Control Quality Department Manager were on the island to provide training to the operators and promised to provide the necessary technical support for the upkeep of the machines.

The preservation of the islands festivals is also critical, therefore at a date to be

announced the Board of Tourism will convene a meeting with the business sector on the island, to discuss sustainable partnerships for the promotion and development of the festivals.

L

iving beyond 100 years is something to be revered and that is the way it is for the family of Joseph Jerome of Top Hill, Carriacou.

Mr. Jerome, who is widely and affectionately called "Da Joe," celebrated his 102nd birthday on Wednesday, February 18.

A birthday party in his honour was organized by his children, grandchildren and great-grands. They travelled by boat and plane, from different parts of the world, to celebrate the special milestone with Da Joe. His daughter, Vanilla, said she wouldn't exchange her father for anything.

She described him by the best dad in the universe. She recalled that as a youngster, her father spanked her once, and utilized every opportunity to instill good moral values in her.

Bernadette Lendore-Sylvester, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, also shared in the momentous occasion with the "Birthday Boy,'' Da Joe. She presented him with a token on behalf of the Ministry.

Mr. Joseph is a member of the Church of Christ congregation. Although he is now unable to attend services, he still enjoys singing gospel hymns. His favourite hymn: "God Be With You Till We Meet Again".

CARRIACOU CRICKETERS PARTICIPATE IN TRAINING SESSIONS FOR THE NATIONAL UNDER 19 CRICKET TEAM Three talented high school athletes from Carriacou have been selected to a training squad which will represent the nation in regional under 19 cricket competition.

They are Derrick Quashie of Hillsborough Secondary School and Curtly Charles and Jeremy Fraser, both of Bishop's College.

The new Grenada government has made a commitment to make Carriacou and Petite more inclusive in national development, including

sports. Carriacou was represented in an historic $60,000 cash-prize cricket competition sponsored by the Ministry of Sports.

Residents of Carriacou and Petite Martinique are delighted with the selection of Quashie, Charles and Fraser to the under 19 training squad, saying it's a move that will boost the development of cricket on the Sister Islands.

The players journeyed to Grenada for the trials, which include a series of games in April, with the support and sponsorship of the Division of Sports in the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, the Ministry of Sports in St. George's, the Carriacou Cricket Association and the Grenada Cricket Association.

DOVER GOVERNMENT THE CHAMPION OF GUT CARRIACOU INTER-PRIMARY SPORTS MEET There is a new young track star in Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

He's L'Esterre Rosary School's Mickel Joseph, who stole the spotlight at the Carriacou Inter-primary Schools Sports Meet of the Grenada Union of Teachers (GUT).

Joseph dominated all the events in which he participated, winning the javelin under 13 boys, discus, and the under 13 races in the 100m, 200m and 400m.

However, Joseph's individual success was not enough for his school to win the track and field competition, which was held for the first time at the mini-stadium in Lauriston.

The athletes of Dover Government School were the dominant force, amassing 320 points to walk away with the champion's trophy.

In second place was the march past winners, L'Esterre R.C .School, who gained 250 points, while Hillsborough Government placed third with 198 points. Harvey Vale Government and Petite Martinique R.C. tied for the fourth position with 178 points.

In addition to Joseph, some of the other outstanding individual athletes were Jamaal Allen, Zachary Logan, Jeanette Stanislaus and Avian Alexis.

The event was attended by representatives of the GUT and Ministry of Sports, including Senior Athletic Coach Bruce Swan, Physical Education Instructor Abel Patrick, and Senior Coach of Field Events, Curlon Peters.

The Rotary Club of Carriacou is making a positive impact in the lives of the people of Carriacou & Petite Martinique as for the fourth year they sponsored the visit of

However, while the Rotary Club of Carriacou is the main initiator of the project, a number of organizations and corporate citizens played an instrumental role in the team visit. They included the Ministry of

SANDY ISLAND OYSTER BED MPA: Centre of Conversation Activities in Carriacou The 787 hectares park contains extensive reef systems with many types of corals, mangroves and sea grass beds. Endangered species in the park include the green sea turtle and the hawks-bill turtle. Sandy Island, with its postcard quality scenery and white sandy beach surrounded by turquoise waters is a cultural landmark for the people of Carriacou and is an important tourism destination.

With the support of a number of stakeholders which includes the Government of Grenada, activities are progressing towards the development of a functioning MPA. Cabinet has approved the area in principle and last steps are underway to finalize the legal establishment of the park.

Three contracts are being processed through the Fisheries Division and funded by the OECS. These contracts are (1) to develop a communication strategy and promotional materials for the park; (2) to install moorings and develop a maintenance plan; and (3) to

develop and expand park infrastructure to include an interim protected area office, design for an interpretation centre and park trails.

A zoning plan, management plan and mooring feasibility study have been developed for the area by the community and local stakeholders with support from other programmes like Sustainable Grenadines Project, the Caribbean Regional Environmental Program (CREP) and the Nature Conservancy.

Meanwhile, Minister Gill is hoping that for Grenada Carnival, a contingent of masqueraders from Carriacou and Petite Martinique will travel to mainland to participate in the 2009 festival.

STEELPAN TAUGHT IN PRIMARY & SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN CARRIACOU & PETITE MARTINIQUE Culture Officer, Felix Mendes said the goal is to develop enough pan men and women to see the establishment of various steel bands on the islands, and the hosting of a panorama competition for Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

The Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, led by Senator George Prime, is endeavouring to take steelpan music to another level on the Sister Islands.

The Division of Culture in the Ministry has hired well-known panist Leroy Sylvester to teach pan music to students of the six primary and two secondary schools.

Mr. Sylvester has commenced the tutoring of young pianists, holding daily practice sessions at the Hillsborough Community Centre.

MINISTER FOR CARRIACOU & PETITE MARTINIQUE AFFAIRS PLEDGES TO WORK CLOSELY WITH CARRIACOU HISTORICAL SOCIETY Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, Senator the Hon. George Prime, has congratulated members of the Carriacou Historical Society for their work in the preservation of the island's cultural heritage.

The heritage of any country is important and crucial, Minister Prime said in remarks delivered at the Historical Society's annual general meeting.

The Society was formed 35 years ago and its responsibilities include overseeing and running a museum in Carriacou.

Senator Prime promised to maintain a close working relationship with the Society, for whom he was instrumental in securing a government subvention of $20,000. It was the first cash contribution of its kind from Government in the history of the Society.

The efforts of Mr. Prime in obtaining Government's help for the group didn't go unnoticed or unappreciated. Patricia John expressed the gratitude of the Historical Society to Senator Prime, who is Leader of Government Business in the Upper House of Parliament.

Ms. John was elected second vicepresident at the Society's AGM. She had just completed three years as president.

The newly elected president is Stephen Alexander, with Cosnel McIntosh as

first vice-president.

Among the goals of the new executive will be increasing visitor numbers to the museum. There was a slight drop in numbers in 2008, but members of the Historical Society are confident of achieving an upward trend this year.

The Society has received assistance from the Grenada Cooperative Bank and plans on attracting greater numbers of visitors by improving the aesthetic of the museum's surroundings.

TRIBUTE PAID TO TWO PERSONS WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THE PRESERVATION OF CARRIACOU'S HERITAGE For 15 years, Mr. Compton served as Executive Director of the Historical Society's museum, and in 1999,

Members of the Society say the "sterling contributions'' by Patrick Compton and Dr. Edward Kent have helped "to preserve and enhance'' the cultural heritage of the 13-square-mile island.

MT. PLEASANT & GRAND-BAY MAROON 2009 The people of Carriacou are keeping tradition alive, celebrating part of their culture handed down by their African ancestors.

Residents of the twin villages of Mt. Pleasant & Grand-Bay held their annual series of Village Maroon activities in the month of February.

This year's Village Maroon, held at Tan Dora Junction, started with the slaughtering and seasoning of the animals, followed on the next day by the gathering of villagers and the preparation and cooking of food in traditional Maroon style: massive pots of food cooked over an open fire.

After the cooking, people from all across Carriacou indulged their palates with some of the Maroons' tantalizing food such as rolled rice, coo-coo with stewed peas and provisions. There was also a choice of chicken, mutton or pork.

The 2009 Mt. Pleasant & Grand-Bay Village Maroon ended with Big Drum dancing by community members, as well as from performers of the Carriacou Cultural Organization.

The Village Maroon tradition, which is more than 200 years old, is held to celebrate the productive harvest and to petition for success in the new planting season.

JOEY STEVENS VISITED CARRIACOU CBS, and is well-known for his sidekick "Bob,'' the parrot.

His visit to the 13-square-mile sister island was in pursuit of material for a twelve part TV programme he is producing on Grenada and Carriacou.

"As soon as Joey Stevens arrived at the Harvey Vale Government School on Television viewers in North America will soon be getting a glimpse of the unspoilt beauty and rich cultural heritage of Carriacou.

Monday, he was easily and instantly identified by many of the students,'' said an official who accompanied him on the visit. The students entertained him by dancing the Big Drum.

This follows a visit on Monday, February 16, to Carriacou by TV personality Joey Stevens. He hosts a Caribbean weather programme on the U.S.-based Wsee TV, an affiliate of

In an address to the 2nd Annual Carriacou Farmers Association Food Exhibition on Sunday, February 1st, 2009, Minister Prime said efforts are being made to get the tractor service restored.

He said the administration is working toward a public/private sector partnership to have other tractors available to farmers.

Farmers Representative in the Senate, Keith Clouden, who attended the function, promised to do “everything within my power” to ensure that the issues and concerns of farmers are properly addressed.

Senator Clouden also called on Government to improve the conditions and environment for agriculture so it becomes a profitable industry.

The Carriacou Farmers Association has as its motto, “sustaining food for life”.

AGRO-FORESTRY PROJECT IN BELAIR, CARRIACOU

With one of Government's main thrust being the revitalization of the agricultural sector, workers attached to the Forestry Division within the Agriculture Department of the Ministry of Carriacou & Petite Martinique Affairs are hard at work developing an agroforestry project. This project will incorporate two disciplines, the development of food crops, which will include a nursery & an orchard, and the planting of trees such as cedar and teak.

The development of the nursery has already started.

Recently two (2) persons Alford Allard and Cindy Teka spent six (6) weeks attached to the Mirabeau Agriculture Station where they underwent training in plant propagation. According to Head of the Forestry Division Benson Patrice, farmers can expect to purchase a number of plants right at home for the new planting season.

Some of the plants that will be available include mangoes, wax apple, cherries, a variety of citrus and vegetable seedlings.

Lands on the outskirts of the Belair Nursery will be used for the development of the orchard and has already being cleared. Patrice said that this will help to provide much needed citrus fruits for local consumption.

Another component of the agro-forestry project would be the reviving of ponds in the area and the development of new ponds. When fully developed, the Belair Nursery and Orchard will be used as a demonstration site for farmers and students.

SIX STUDENTS RECEIVED ASSISTANCE WITH THEIR EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY FROM GRENCASE certificates of enrollment and cheques.

He said that the Commonwealth Country League is based in London and is a charitable organization, which sponsors secondary education for needy girls.

Two (2) female students from Bishop's College and four (4) from Hillsborough Secondary School were among nine secondary school girls in the tri-island state who are beneficiaries of the Commonwealth Country League Education Fund. The fund was secured through the non-profit, nongovernmental organization, the Grenada Citizen Advice & Small Business Agency (GRENCASE).

The Fund has sponsored over two thousand (2000) girls in over thirty (30) countries giving them an opportunity to achieve their ambitions and expand their horizons.

significance of this gesture to the children and by extension, their parents, lies in its appropriateness rather than its value.

The cheques received can be used toward the cost of school (transportation, school meals, uniform, books and other incidentals) and examination fees.

The beneficiaries are Kimberly Quashie, Shenika Lalgie, Deanne Bethel, Lisa Charles, Nisa Daniel and Kathama McMillan.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY COMES TO THE MINISTRY On December 1st, 2008, the Ministry of Carriacou & Petite Martinique Affairs entered new territory when it commissioned the Division of Information Technology. For the first time in its 12 year history, this Ministry has a body which will manage all computer-related operations. In fact, it is the first I.T. unit of Government in Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

The new division, staffed by three persons, would manage and maintain the Ministry’s computer equipment and networks, and upgrade the computing services of the Ministry. The aims of the division are to extend the lifespan of computers, upgrade and modernize the computer equipment, and to provide a more productive environment for the staff of the Ministry.

In the past, computer equipment were acquired and deployed in an ad hoc fashion. There was little control or supervision of their use, resulting in easy damage to, and consequent loss of, equipment. The new division now assumes responsibility for the installation of all hardware and software, for all repairs and maintenance. This division would also begin training staff in the proper usage of computing equipment, as this would serve to prolong the useful life of the equipment.

Another primary goal of the new unit is to have the Ministry of Carriacou & Petite Martinique Affairs and other government agencies, such as the police, linked to the Government's computerized accounting system. This provides for the Ministry staff to more effectively manage its budget and transactions. The implementation of this initiative is already under way and is expected to be completed by the end of April, 2009.

Although the idea of Information Technology management for Carriacou was put forward to the Ministry as far back as 2004, it was not until August

2008 that the concept was first fully embraced. This unit was considered to be of such great importance to the operations of government in Carriacou and Petite Martinique, that it was one of the very first projects approved by the new cabinet.

The unit is headed by Davon Baker, who serves as IT Manager/Systems Administrator. Mr. Baker brings to the unit a background in Computer Science, as well as his vision to take technology to new heights in our little islands.

This has been his dream since his return home from university and he is very excited that the idea of technology management has finally begun to take root. Mr. Baker is quite convinced that not only would the Ministry be more productive and efficient in its operations, but that the use of computer equipment would be less costly, since we would be losing fewer computers due to careless and unmanaged use.

The Manager is supported by two able technicians – Jamaal Adams has responsibility for networks and Trevlyn Cox, spearheads the maintenance of the Ministry’s computer hardware. “I'm confident”, Mr. Baker said, “that we can and will make a distinct difference in our Ministry. We are dedicated, diligent workers, and I promise that we would, in a most obvious way, impact on our Ministry's ability to serve our communities”.

At present, the IT Division is housed at the Carriacou Multi-Purpose Centre, a facility for which it has also assumed a supervisory role. A key initiative of the division is to supervise the transition of the Centre from a place of casual use into a more education oriented facility, offering training opportunities in computers and other learning areas.

In recognition of the theme, “Celebrating 35 years of Grenadianism” the Harvey Vale Government School and Hillsborough Government showcased different aspect of the island's rich cultural heritage such as Shakespeare Mas, Big Drum dancing and the traditional wedding.

A number of activities to celebrate this milestone were held; this included an independence road race for the secondary and primary students. In the secondary division Hillsborough Secondary School dominated with Akiba Samerson placing first in the boys’ category and Kaytana McMillan first in the girls division. Ziggy Stewart of Dover Government School was the outstanding male athlete in the primary division while Bianka Joseph took the first position in the primary girls division.

AN IMPRESSIVE 2009 INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS IN CARRIACOU The people of Carriacou and Petite Martinique turned out in large numbers at the Lauriston mini-stadium on Thursday, February 5th to celebrate Grenada's 35th Anniversary of Independence which for the first time included fireworks display.

Governor–General His Excellency Carlyle Glean told the large gathering that if the tri-island state of Grenada has to continue on a progressive path, citizens must be held accountable for their actions.

Minister for Carriacou & Petite Martinique Affairs Senator, the Hon. George Prime in his first independence address said that as the task of rebuilding the nation continues; citizens need to keep in mind that this nation belongs to all of them. He congratulated the Independence Celebrations Committee led by Linton Lendore for working hard to ensure the event was a success.

Adding to the flavor of the celebrations was a contingent of officers from the Special Services Unit who for the first time participated in the military parade on the 13 square miles island.

Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas, in his address said it is important for citizens to remember and recognize the nation’s forefathers who have played a significant role in the early growth and development of the nation. He further stated that it is their vision, dreams, sacrifices and actions that have laid the foundation for our progress.

UNESCO's objectives, through its World Heritage Committee, is to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world that are considered to be of outstanding value to humanity.
