CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM PROCESS BROUGHT TO THE SCHOOLS

Officials of the Ministry of Legal Affairs have met with students of primary and secondary schools in Carriacou as part of the

BISHOP'S COLLEGE PAYS TRIBUTE TO PAST PRINCIPAL He arrived in Carriacou as a United States Peace Corps volunteer at what was then Hillsborough Junior Secondary. Eventually, he became the longest-serving principal of Bishop's College. Now, to show appreciation to Kenneth Nachajko, Bishop's College has named a house after him.

College– one of the nation's top secondary schools. At the launch of the 2011 netball and football competitions the school unveiled Nachajko House. It's the school's fourth house.

Teacher Ackayda Stafford, in a tribute to Nachajko, remembered his tenure at Bishop's College.

According to Stafford, Nachajko did all the maintenance work on the

school, built stationary desks and seats in all the classrooms.

STUDENTS ENCOURAGED TO MAKE READING PART OF LIFE organizations and implored on students the importance of reading, noting that it aids in their overall development.

Friends through Books was started in 2009 by Americans Graham and Kyle Ashby of Idaho. The interest of the family-run group is improving the lives of students by enhancing learning opportunities through the provision of books and other educational materials.

Two non-profit organizations, intent on encouraging students to make reading part of their lives, have made contributions of books to the Carriacou Community Library.

The hard work and dedication of farmers, fishermen and agro-processors were highly commended by Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, Senator George Prime, along with Division of Agriculture officials.

Several farmers received awards. They included Norge Patrice, Gabriella DeRoche, Maudlyn Stewart and Septimus Jaffier.

The celebrations were extra special for farmer, Oscar Blair, who received the Food and Agriculture Organization World Food Day bronze medal.

According to Senior Agriculture Officer, Benson Patrice, Blair is deserving of the medal. He noted that Blair has provided invaluable contribution to the agriculture sector here, not only through the planting of fruits and vegetables, but also in making available his machinery to the Agriculture Division and the entire farming community.

GOAT REARING PROJECT REAPING SUCCESS Farmers are benefiting from the project which has involved the construction of three goat pens and the introduction of hybrid goats. The project is funded to the tune of US$40,000 from the Caribbean Agriculture Research Institute and the InterAmerican Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture.

During the 2011 World Food Day celebrations at the Hillsborough Vendors Market, two farmers – Kelvin Bubb and Peter Guadeloupe – received goats. The animals are offspring of the project at Carlyle Patrice Farm.

Senior Agriculture Officer, Benson Patrice, said his Division is happy that the goat-rearing project has come to fruition.

The Agriculture Division, he explained, is committed to ensuring that Carriacou and Petite Martinique becomes the “centre of excellence for small ruminants' production.''

A goat-rearing project, which was launched by the Division of Agriculture in the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs in 2009, is today reaping success.

Each year, the nation produces 18,000 pounds of goat meat and imports 12,000 pounds.

DEVELOPMENT OF A GREEN SPACE PROPOSED The development of a green space is being proposed as the Agriculture Division within the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs resuscitates one of the oldest ponds on the island.

He says it is hoped that a park on the outskirts of the pond will be created where persons can host different activities like picnics.

The Division headed by Benson Patrice heeded to the call of villagers to clean the Belair pond and bring back life to it.

According to Patrice, the pond is a significant landmark and holds a special meaning to villagers, in the olden days people from different villages journeyed there for water.

Following the severe drought of 20092010, the Agriculture Division embarked on the cleaning and resuscitating of several wells and ponds, to ensure that a similar situation do not reoccur where water had to be barged in from Grenada.

Noting the abundance of fruits and vegetables produced on the island; the Division led by Benson Patrice

agro-processors here to assist them in better marketing and selling their products locally, regionally and internationally.

Patrice stated that the mill house will also be used as a place where they can properly package their products. This will enhance the production, display and marketing of their agro-processed goods, he added.

The Windward Fish Centre, which underwent two months of repairs by the Division of Agriculture, has now been reopened.

On the eastern side of Carriacou, in the village of Mt. Pleasant, residents have welcomed the construction of over 800ft of concrete road and drainage.

The Mt. Pleasant project is being led by contractor Ronald Gittens, and provides employment for over 10 persons within the community.

In Petite Martinique alone, this year Government is spending more than $75,000 on road rehabilitation.

Erecting the shelter was the idea of Permanent Secretary with responsibility for Local Government, Bernadette Lendore-Sylvester. She noticed residents of the community, especially school children, were often left waiting on buses, standing in blazing sun or pouring rain.

DIVISION OF SPORTS WORKS ON IMPROVING RECREATIONAL FACILITIES

PRINCESS ROYAL HOSPITAL RECEIVES DONATION OF MEDICAL SUPPLIES Williams, Friends of Princess Royal presented the hospital with supplies that included towels, gauze and antibiotic ointment.

A non-governmental organization is considering plans to construct a viewing platform on the grounds of the Princess Royal Hospital.

The proposal is being examined by members of the Friends of Princess Royal Hospital as a way of adding to the tourism product of Carriacou.

The hospital grounds, which are frequented by tourists, offer a panoramic view of the town of Hillsborough, several villages and neighbouring islands such as Sandy Island.

Senator Prime said the hamper donations are a means of showing the elderly that they are appreciated and their contributions are valued.

And, to make a positive difference in the level of care provided to the elderly in the twin-isle parish, 15 caregivers are now enrolled in a geriatric training programme.

DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS NEW COMPUTERS FOR MULTIPURPOSE CENTRE FROM CHINESE EMBASSY Computers and printers were presented to Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs Senator George Prime by Ambassador Xu Jianguo, on his first official visit to the twin-isle constituency recently.

In accepting the donation Minister Prime said he is grateful as the government continues to keep abreast with the growing modern trend of utilizing information technology for educational purposes.

Minister Prime noted that the Carriacou Multipurpose Centre which began operations in 2006 provides computer related services to the public and also offer training courses; therefore the donation will enhance the work done there.

The Carriacou Multipurpose Centre is now equipped with new computer sets, thanks to the Chinese Embassy in Grenada.

WATER SUPPLY MASTER PLAN FOR CARRIACOU & PETITE MARTINIQUE BEING DEVELOPED A team of five Canadian consultants was in Carriacou undertaking an in-depth examination of the island's water resources.

The team of consultants works with BURNSIDE, a Canadian based firm which specializes in the design of water distribution, storm and sanitary infrastructure for the past 41 years.

The specific objectives of the consultants' assignment include making recommendations to improve the ability of the National Water and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA) to provide water to Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

The recommendations are also expected to lead to the formulation of a phased capital works' investment programme for the islands.

One of the initiatives has been collaboration between the Ministry and NAWASA on the development of a water supply master plan for the twin parish.

Already, the consultants have visited several wells and water catchment areas, as well as the lone bore hole operated by NAWASA.

Funding for the project, including the capital works' investment programme, was secured through a grant from the Caribbean Development Bank to the tune of US$204, 000.

Following a severe drought of 2009-2010, the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs began seeking ways of avoiding a repeat of the islands' water shortage.

GENDER & FAMILY AFFAIRS MEN EMPOWERED TO BE CHAMPIONS OF CHANGE For many years it has been felt that more focus is placed on women and girls; however the Division of Gender & Family Affairs is now working to change this perception.

This comes as a workshop was held by the Division focusing on the theme: “Men as Champions of Change�, to end gender based violence.

Workshop Facilitator Tyrone Buckmire guided participants to understand the issue of gender equality and masculinity, appreciating the value of religion, spirituality and gender relations and also how to deal with conflicts.

Coordinator of Gender & Family Affairs Vinishah Cudjoe said that she is confident that the participants will use the information to enhance their lives and the lives of other men and will now become advocates against gender based violence.
