ITINERARI / ROUTES dell’Aquilia. This children’s museum, with its learn and play agenda, boasts an impressive international collection of art works and a laboratory with a professional ceramics oven. Next, we call in at the Perinetti Fossa cheese factory, and then, from savoury to sweet, we trace an exquisite aroma wafting across the street to its source at the Glober Chocolate Factory! The castle of Ocre is a beautiful mediaeval castle perhaps more aptly classified as a medieval “fortified village”, the walls of which include old houses, tower houses and streets. The Monastero Fortezza di Santo Spirito is a 13th century monastery offering accommodation. For those of you with a sweet tooth, the Dolce Aveja boasts a 40-year long tradition in the production of homemade style candies and liqueurs. Further attractions in this area include San Demetrio ne’ Vestini and the Stiffe Caves, a karst cave where rocks and water meet to create a grotto of rare beauty. Next, we are intrigued by Aquilandia, a theme park where we find scale models of 20 monuments, parks and archaeological sites located in the L’Aquila province. Provisions are made, including descriptions in Braille, for the visually impaired. We cannot but end our day at the Visconti Kitchen and Cooking Experience. Here, it is possible to enjoy a first-hand cooking experience with Chef Leonardo Visconti, during which he reveals the secrets of some of his personal culinary creations.
