Neal McBrien, 27th Headmaster of St Joseph’s College, 1967

Mr McBrien was Headmaster at Terrace in 1967 and died recently in his eighties. He was at school in Terrace in 1938-1940 and was a Christian Brother for many years and later worked in Edmund Rice Education at Indooroopilly. We send our sympathy to his wife, Judy and their children.

This visit was on the occasion of the celebration of the Mass remembering the 125 years the Christian Brothers had been in residence at Gregory Terrace.

College Principal’s Page

Welcome to this edition of The Terracian, and I hope for our many readers it gives an insight into what has been part of our landscape over the past few months.

As part of the countdown to World Youth Day (WYD08) in Sydney next July, the World Youth Day Journey of the Cross and Icon visited Terrace in August with a special liturgy that was organised by Mr Damien Price, our Director of Mission. On this occasion, we were also privileged to have a number of students from other Catholic Schools join us as the Cross and Icon travels the nation until the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI in July next year. The College will be represented at the World Youth Day in Sydney along with a number of fellow students from a school we support in East Timor.

As special guests at our Academic Medal Assembly this term, we were honoured to welcome Brother Barry Buckley, who was Headmaster of the College between 1973 – 1982, and Australian of the Year, Professor Ian Frazer. As the community are aware Professor Frazer, a clinical immunologist, has very successfully developed a vaccine that will prevent and treat cervical cancer which affects many women each year. On this occasion, Brother Barry was awarded a Fellowship by the Australian College of Education for his contribution to education in this State.

As part of the Assembly, some one hundred and twenty-six students were

acknowledged for their academic excellence at the end of Semester One. While congratulations were bestowed on these students who had achieved excellent results, acknowledgement was also made of those young men whose efforts at the end of Semester One were reflective of a strong work ethic and a demonstrated commitment to their studies.

In our schools we are constantly asking our young people to strive for success, but we are also helping them to cope when they don’t meet their personal goals. It is worth remembering the words of Thomas Moore in his book “Care of the Soul”, where he says “we are who we are as much because of our gaps and shortcomings as because of our strengths”. Supporting our young men is a process of respecting all their emotions, because limitations are part and parcel of life. A healthy adolescent is a person who will have learnt the importance of coping with the challenges of good and better days. This is what the psychologists now call “resilience”. As parents and educators, we must facilitate the skills of effective resilience.

With best wishes

Journey of the Cross and Icon

The World Youth Days are celebrations that are held every year with festivities that are either Diocesan or International. The first was held at Rome on Palm Sunday 1984 and a week later Pope John Paul II entrusted the Cross to the young people of the world. This cross has been travelling the world since then and was at Terrace last month.

Tthe next International celebration was in 1987 at Buenos Aires in Argentina

The next celebration was at Santiago de Compostella, Spain, in 1989.

Czestochowa, Poland, was next on 10-15 August 1991.

Denver, USA , followed 10-15 August 1993. Asia followed in 1995 at Manilla, Philippines, 10-15 January

Paris, France, came next in 1997 on 19-24 August

In 2000 the international celebration was in Rome again, on 15-20 August Toronto, Canada, was chosen for 23-28 July 2002.

The last International World Youth Day was Cologne, Germany, August 16-21 2005

The visit of the Cross to Gregory Terrace recently is part of the preparation for the

28th International World Youth Day to be held in on 15-20 July, 2008.

Congratulations!

Professor Paul Greenfield, 60, a chemical engineer by profession will become University of Queensland ViceChancellor in January 2008. He has beaten an international field to win one of Australia’s top academic jobs.

On its way to Sydney next year the World Youth Day Cross took centre stage when Gregory Terrace played host on Wednesday 22 August in the College Campbell Centre. Students from St James’, All Hallows, and St Ignatius’ Toowong joined Terrace students from Year 10 and Year 11 for the liturgy.

Over 600 students gathered in silence and reverence as St James’ students acknowledged the original owners and custodians of the land by dance and also received the Message Stick which is travelling with the Cross. Students prayed together and were invited to venerate the Cross.

Fr Chris Ryan, MGL, (Missionary of God’s Love) and Ben Zammit (College ViceCaptain) both gave inspiring addresses. Immediately after the ceremony the Cross and those responsible for it in Australia moved on to their next commitment.

Music Program Extended

Terrace music will benefit from a recent generous gift received from Mr Norman Clarke, an old boy who attended the College from 1947 and completed Year 10 in 1952.

Mr Peter Chapman, College Principal, said Mr Clarke has retained a great interest in music and wished to assist by giving younger students the opportunity to develop skills with a variety of instruments during their intuitive years.

He also said that with Mr Clarke’s gift, the College has purchased 78 new instruments to extend the lower primary school musical program beyond the current Year 5 group through to Year 6.

Mr Clarke said it gave him great pleasure to contribute to this worthwhile program that hopefully will encourage more boys to continue and improve their playing skills.

The Principal said Mr Clarke’s generosity in enabling the College to extend the music program is much appreciated and on behalf of the students, thanked him for his kind gesture of goodwill to Terrace.

Sir Llew Edwards, the UQ Chancellor said, “Having considered candidates from many countries, with advice from global recruitment consultants, Senate has no hesitation in concluding that Paul Greenfield is the best person for this position.”

His unanimous selection by the UQ Senate followed an international search.

Professor Greenfield completed Senior at Terrace in 1964 and looks back at the school with respect and fondness. “The Christian Brothers certainly helped us to learn good study habits.”

We wish him well in his exacting new position and congratulate him on his appointment.

UN Youth Conference

Michael Kehoe (11R) (Photo right) spent the first week of Term 3 at the UN Youth Conference in Canberra with 86 other students from around the country ranging in age from fifteen to twenty years of age and with fifty facilitators. Queensland was represented by nine students.

The theme of the conference was Aid, Trade and Development and addresses were presented by politicians and professors. At the end of the week the students presented a Youth Declaration to the Government at the High Court and attended a formal dinner.

We congratulate Michael for being such an excellent ambassador for the school and the state.

Vale, Warwick Webb, 11.12.1931

to 13.6.2007

At 75 years of age Warwick, affectionately known as “Spide”, passed into God’s care in June of this year. His life at Terrace commenced in 1941 in Grade 3. His stay at Terrace was longer than usual as he repeated Junior and did Senior in 1949 and 1950. He was made a Prefect in both 1949 and 1950 and was captain of the Cricket First XI in both those years. In 1950 he gained selection in the combined GPS XI to play Queensland University.

As an Old Boy he gained an apprenticeship, as it was done in those days, at David Pharmacies, a chemist chain in central Brisbane. Miss Clare Street was an apprentice at the same chain and in 1957 she became Mrs Warwick Webb.

They operated a Pharmacy at Coorparoo and worked together through their working life. He and Clare raised four daughters and there are six granddaughters and four grandsons. His spirit lives on at Terrace through grandsons Nathan (12K) and Matthew (9K)Chalmers and Jackson Hickey (7R). Ben Chalmers is due to start in 2009. From the family home at Yeronga Warwick was regularly able to watch the fortunes of Terrace in sports at Tennyson.

He retired some ten years ago. He truly qualifies as a “Gentleman of Terrace”.

Working with Migrant Students - a Year 9 “Exploration”

Vale, Dr Justin Carey, 26.9.1932 to 2.7.2007

Justin Daniel Carey was born in Rockhampton on 26 September 1932. He began at Terrace in Sub-Junior A in 1946. An excellent student who also joined the Army Cadet Corps, representing at rifle shooting and becoming Cadet Lieutenant. He was a stalwart in the Legion of Mary.

At the University of Queensland he studied Medicine and joined the University Squadron, attaining the rank of Pilot Officer.

After graduation as a doctor he elected to work in a country hospital and then, as a country GP with advanced skills in

Year 8 Mathematicians

Recently the Queensland Association of Mathematics Teachers held their Year 8 Competition. Last year’s winners were Brisbane Grammar School and so the competition was held there.

Terrace students Damian Maher (8R), Tim Warry (8M) and Joseph Teague (8R) won the competition and will be in the South East Queensland finals at Hilbrook Anglican College on 30 August.. We wish them well.

obstetrics, he spent his working life in different areas in Queensland and later in NSW. Here he was elected as AMA councillor from 1984-1987. He was highly regarded by his patients and colleagues and continued to serve his community until shortly before his death.

His varied interests included poetry (he kept his Senior poetry anthology close by all his life), opera, growing roses, dogs and tinkering with his Mazda RX7.

He died on 2 July 2007 surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Wendy and their son Matthew and by his children from his first marriage, John, Louise, Benita and Tom. He was truly another “Gentleman of Terrace”.

During the recent Explorations, thirteen Terrace students joined the Campus Minister at Milpera State High School where for five days they accompanied the migrant students. They went to classes with them, assisting them with their studies and forming the basis for solid relationships in the future. It was a humbling experience to sit with both groups of students. Witnessing the expanding awareness of both groups as they shared their stories in at best broken English was quite extraordinary. A clear proof of their commitment and the friendships formed was that the Terrace students chose to go back and visit the school during the first week of the Terrace holidays which coincided with the last week of the Milpera term. They deserve our heartfelt congratulations,

Prize-winners, 1928

On 3 November, 1928, the prize-winners at St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace, were presented with their awards by Dr James Duhig, the Archbishop of Brisbane. One of the local Brisbane papers, The Daily Mail, printed a couple of photos of the event in its “Daily Camera Record”. Our record in the Archives was a not-toogood copy of the article - and the photo quality suggests just that - but it is a moment repeated at the College yearly since 1875.

“BEST CLOTHES FOR TERRACE”

This seems to have been a saying in the “preuniform” days at Terrace when for many of the College families who were really struggling, good clothes were a problem. Nearly everybody had suffered during World War I and for such a small population Australia endured high casualities. And the Great Depression was on the way with many men moving about the countryside looking for work in their efforts to support their families. Even the youngest of the students in the photo would be in his eighties now. Terrace has been built on the likes of these clever young men.

First Communion at Terrace

Many people can remember their First Communion Day. Sometimes it was in a crowded city church with dozens of other children of the same age. Sometimes it was in a small church with very few knowing what important event was happening. In July a Year 5 student celebrated his First Communion in the Holy Family Chapel. He was welcomed by those at the Tuesday morning Mass at Terrace and he was joined in the ceremony by his parents and his four sisters. A memorable occasion for all who were there.

Academic Medal Assembly for Semester One

Special guests were welcomed at the Academic Medal Assembly in late July: Br Barry Buckley who was Headmaster of the College from 1973 to 1981 and Professor Ian Frazer, Australian of the Year. Professor Frazer addressed the Year 6 students earlier in the day and he is widely recognised in Australia for his friendliness and his work as a clinical immunologist who has successfully developed a vaccine that will prevent and treat cervical cancer. Br Buckley was presented with a Fellowship by the Australian College of Education for his contribution to education in this state.

This was the occasion for the presentation of academic awards to 126 students - about 10% of the College enrolment - who were acknowledged for their academic excellence at the end of Semester One. We congratulate those who received awards on their success and also rejoice with those whose academic result was an improvement on their past efforts. Congratulations to them and their parents on their good efforts! We note particulatly the success of two Senior students Brian Funder (12R) and Matthew Walker (12M) who were given special awards acknowledging their considerable academic improvement.

Old Boy Debaters

Many thanks to Tom Gole:

I’m a Terrace Old Boy and I’m presently Externals Officer and the Immediate Past President of the Queensland Debating Society......Two Terrace Old Boys were in a team from UQ that recently won the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships, held in Malaysia. “Australs” as the tournament is known is the world’s second biggest debating championship, attended by approximately 400 university students ftrom eleven different countries. It has never been won by a team outside Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide or Wellington before in its 32-year history.

The two debaters are Andrew Hodge (finished 2000) and Mitchell Grady (finished 2006). This comes after Oliver Badenhorst (finished 2006) was a part of the UQ team that won the Australian Intervarsity Debaing Championships held in Sydney over the Easter period. This was the first time UQ had ever won the Australian Championships.

And I’m sure that hundreds of current and former Terrace debaters will share in the success of our present debaters at UQ.

I want to be a Rockstara Year 9 “Exploration”

A rock music Exploration unit was introduced into the program this year. Titled “I Want to be a Rockstar”, the focus of the unit was exploring the components necessary to stage a successful live performance. The 31 students began the week by rehearsing and being entertained by top Brisbane covers band “Odyssey” who performed a number of pieces that the boys themselves would be playing in their live concert at the end of the week. A very fruitful Question and Answer session with the band members [See photo 4 ] set the scene for what was needed for the culminating concert to be a success. The Odyssey members conducted individual performance workshops with the boys and over the coming days rehearsals were interspersed with sessions with DJ Hart (aka Mr Richard Hart, Subject Coordinator of History) [Photo 3] and old boy Bobby Flynn. Bobby’s session with the boys [Photo 2] revealed insights into the music business as well as some tips for songwriting. A part of the experience the boys also attended two night time concerts. The Ultimate Elvis Tribute Concert at the Wintersun Festival and Evermore at

the Tivoli Theatre. The week ended with a very entertaining concert in College Hall where the four rock bands each performed two covers songs which were thoroughly enjoyed by the staff, parents and students present.

The Changing Face of St Joseph’s College

St Joseph’s College, as with most older schools, has been built in many stages - as money became available! The Centenary building containing what is now the Campbell Centre was opened in 1975, but the Campbell Centre itself, the Pool, Duhig Place etc, were completed over the next few years. At left is a photo of our Campbell Centre in 1977 showing steps replacing the old Billet Street. Other photos show today’s scenes.

First student at St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace - 1875

The first student to have his name recorded in the St Joseph’s Fees Book of 1875 (containing the names and addresses of the first pupils who attended “The Terrace’”as it was affectionately known in those early days) was John Philip Pole who had been born in 1862 and who lived at W ickham Street, The Valley. On 5 October of that first year £1/7/6 was paid for school fees by John’s parents Sheldon and Mary Pole.

pine trees and weeds. [See picture below left] The caretaker kindly cut back the trees to reveal the headstone of John Pole and his family. It was quite a find and will contribute to the history of Terrace.

John had an elder brother Henry, two sisters and a much younger brother, Thomas (GT 1883). When Sheldon Pole, who had been one of Brisbane’s early printers died, he was buried by a Church of England priest as too was John in 1948. Both father and son are buried at Toowong Cemetery

Recently as part of the study of the “Local Area” the Terrace Year Six students, their teachers and many parents travelled to the Toowong Cemetery. While the boys were following the heritage trail, Mrs Egan, a Year Six teacher, had the important task of finding and photographing the headstone of John Pole. Mrs Egan was able to find the headstone with the assistance of the Toowong Cemetery caretaker. She was shocked when she first saw the grave site as it was heavily overgrown with a variety of

Further investigations have revealed that the two brothers Henry and John had followed in their father’s footsteps and had formed the firm of H.Pole and Co which was eventually purchased by the W ilkie Group. Before being bought out the Pole brothers specialised in fine arts lino-prints and preparing theatre publications. One special programme was for Dame Nellie Melba’s performance here at His Majesty’s Theatre in Queen Street, Brisbane.

As far as we can ascertain John Pole had no direct descendants, but close relatives of Henry were able to share valuable information that has helped us to find out what has occurred over the last 131 years. Moves are in place to restore completely our first pupil’s grave site and quotes have been obtained by the Old Boys Association to enable this to happen in the near future. [Photos top left and centre of the grave site.]

Final Kairos Retreat for 2007

Recently the final Year 12 Kairos Retreat took place at Camp Buckley. During the three days the participants have the chance to be still while they listen and share stories and experiences of their lives and the lives of others.

It is the last time they have the chance to do this during their years at the College. It is easy to see that over this time friendships are sealed and new friendships emerge. Not all the time was spent in quiet reflection. The “high ropes” course is just one of the practical actiities where the young men can challenge their sense of self - even to the point of doing the activities blindfolded - what a challenge!

House Choirs, 2007

The annual House Choir competition is becoming “something to strive for!” And this year’s contest was taken very seriously, with a couple of teams eagerly working to defeat Windsor as well as to win themselves!

St Joseph’s Day GTOBA Luncheon - Irish Club, 2007

The St Joseph Day lunch to which all members of the Terrace community were welcome was held in the Irish Club this year and it was a resounding success. The President of the GTOBA Paul Howard welcomed the 300 guests. The majority of those present have already noted in his or her diary the 2008 date Wednesday 19 March in case they miss out on a great time with pleasant musical background, congenial company and the usual high standard of drink and food provided by the friendly staff in the Tara Room.

The Principal thanked Paul for his wonderful organizational skills. Everyone agreed that it was a great ‘idea’ of Paul’s to revive this special occasion.

Special mention was made of the hospitality expertise of Michael O’Rourke and the marketing and administrative help supplied by the College Registrar, Hilary Mackie.

A GREAT time was had by all !! Neil Doherty Archivist

We all wish him and his family well.

Errors to correct!

Apologies to Barry Halcrow whose surname was mis-spelt three times in the article on p6 of the April Terracian. Apologies, Barry! Apologies, too, to Viv Humphreys. In a caption on p5 we sent him to a theatre of action between the two World Wars where he did not serve. Sorry about that, Viv, and our sincere apologies.

A visit to Jordan

Early in July two Terrace students Oliver Creagh (9T) and Jake Schmidt (9M) departed to Jordan to attend an International Youth Congress in Amma as guests of Her Majesty Queen Noor Al Hussain of Jordan. One of the criteria to attend was excellence in a particular area of the Arts and community involvement. Both Jake and Oliver are part of a group called the Kidz2Kidz Youth Choir. This Foundation has produced K2K, an inspirational musical CD that has inspired hope across the world, promoting world peace by planting the seeds of hope for future generations. The report is from Oliver.

In Jordan, Jake and I attended the International Arab Children’s Congress which was held in the capital Amman. The congress is held by the Queen of Jordan between 18 countries and this was the first time Australia had been invited to send a delegation. Most of the other delegations were Arab, but there were children there from Holland, America and India. Children at the conference ranged from ages 8 to 19.

Jake and I attended with Candy and Natalie, two All Hallows’ girls and Sana Mammo, founder of Kidz 2 Kidz. Kidz 2 Kidz is the peace choir that Sana founded, and the Queen of Jordan personally sent Kidz 2 Kidz an invitation to send four of their members for the congress. In Jordan apart from travelling the country we went to forums, debates, discussions and did workshops such as Drama and Music.

“Pin-hole Camera”, 2007 style

The main point of the congress was to make friends; the kids were just like us so it was very easy to make many friends. This was instead of fighting as most adults from the countries that were represented, see as the alternative.

We had a very fun time and we won’t forget the experience soon.

Class of 1987Twenty Years

On Saturday 18 August, the students of 1987 got together for a bite to eat and a few drinks at the Merthyr Bowls Club at New Farm. It was a fun night catching up with former class mates reminiscing with each other, whilst also having a laugh at the many experiences shared together over the years. Some who had not attended a reunion before hadn’t seen each other since attending their school days at Terrace in the 80’s. The night was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. It was a great effort by many present on the night who travelled from overseas and all around the country to be there.

JOY

For the last ten years Terrace has finished in the first three in the GPS Championship in Cross Country and again we came third, but with both equal winners just that one point ahead! However, Terrace won the Cross Country Shield for the second time. The Shield is awarded to the team that does best at the weekly Cross Country

Carnivals. It is a showing of team depth rather than indivisual brilliance. Winning the Shield takes a lot of persistence and dedication on behalf of the students and it had taken Terrace a long time to get hold of it. Final scores in the Shield season were: GT 249, BGS 237, ACGS 194, NC 189, BBC 180, BSHS 152, IGS 142, TGS 116 and TSS 111.

Unfortunately the team fell just short of the dream of adding the GPS Premiership. The 16 years team of Ben McTaggart (R), Patrick Schmidt (K), Gerard Balnaves (B), Nicholas O’Brien (M), Michael Daniels (R) and Nathan Lndsay (M), won their age group. The Open team and the 15 years came second while the13 and 14 years groups came fifth. The final points were: IGS and ACGS equal 37, GT 36, BGS 32, NC 28, BBC 25, TSS 14, TGS 11 and BSHS 8. Our congratulations go to IGS and ACGS.

Terrace Timor Network

The Terrace Timor Network (TTN) was formed just over 12 months ago and facilitates a partnership between the Christian Brother’s Ministry in Timor Leste - Comunidade Edmund Rice (CER), and the staff, parents and students of Terrace. The Terrace Timor Network evolved from a group of parents whose sons went to East Timor for their Year 10 Immersion. Their experiences during and since the Immersions encouraged the parents to seek ways to build partnerships with the East Timorese. Our vision is to walk in partnership and companionship with CER and the East Timorese villagers to:

- Build long term sustainable capacity within the East Timorese so as to improve their quality of life

- Empower the East Timorese for more life choices

· Support stable and sustainable independence.

In achieving this, we hope to continue to connect the heads and hearts of the Terrace Community.

With the support of the College Leadership Team, Damien Price, Conor Finn, Alison Price-Stone and the students of Terrace, the Terrace Timor Network has several projects underway:

- Specialised Educational Resources are being developed for use in the local Timor schools

· A range of Occasional Cards and Gift Tags using local handicrafts are being made by women and disabled groups

· An Art Exchange Project is underway between the Middle School at Terrace and several primary schools in the villages in Timor.

· Tais Wrist Bands are currently being made and will be available for sale early 2008.

One project recently came to fruition. Handwoven Tais Bookmarks, made by a group of women living and working in a remote hillside village outside Dili, were recently packaged and sold by Terrace students. The Tais is an indigenous weaving of Timor Leste and the multicoloured patterns are rich in cultural significance. Terrace students and TTN parents volunteered their time to individually package the Bookmarks and then sold them across Terrace. About $1500 was raised by the students for East Timor.

Under 15 Footballers try Yeppoon

League or Union?

Stan Ryan (GT 1942-50) comes from a footballing family. His uncle Tommy Gorman, the first Queenslander to captain the Kangaroos, was inducted into the Rugby League Hall of Fame in September 2007. Stan and his wife were invited by the ARL to represent the family.

Stan’s father captained Queensland Rugby League and later was a Rugby Union selector. Stan’s older brother, Tom, now deceased was a doctor who played Rugby Union for Queensland as a more than six foot half-back!. His younger brother, John, was known as “Rugby” Ryan - he was a great supporter of Rugby and a stalwart of Ballymore.

At Terrace Stan did not play Rugby, but was in the GPS Swimmimg team in 1950

No doubt Stan and his wife Cath (Tommy Gorman’s daughter) really enjoyed meeting fellow “old-timers” at the Dally M Awards Night in Sydney.

(Thanks to John Stitt - GT 1941-49 - for supplying information about a school friend.)

An example of “Parent Power” at Terrace

In the first week of July a number of enthusiastic parents took a small group of Terrace students to theski fields at Perisher Valley to compete in the northern New South Wales Interschools’ Snowsports Competition

Terrace v Nudgee Rugby 2007

Terrace wore blue and white colours from 1875. When Nudgee accepted the boarding boys from Terrace after 1891 they also took the blue and white colours. When Br Reidy was GT Headmaster in 1924 Br Ryan (NC) in a discussion opted to keep the blue and white so Br Reidy said that Terrace would change to red and black - as far as possible from blue and white.

The “Red and Black” set to do their very best (left) - as has been done since 1891! And on the right the kicker (Toby White 12T) faces the famous sea of blue and white in the Nudgee stand.
