elcome to this year’s first edition of the of the Terracian and in particular those who are receiving it for the first time.

In saying welcome can I also offer my very sincere thanks for the very warm welcome I have received in returning to the College community. I looked forward to joining this community as the 29th Principal of Terrace as it began its 129th year of excellence in boys’ education in the fine traditions of Edmund Rice and the Christian Brothers. It is undoubtedly a College community that is widely respected and valued not only within its local context but on both national and international horizons. I look forward to building on the best of its traditions as we begin the next chapter of the journey. At the time of leaving here some two and half years ago to take up the Principalship at St Patrick’s College Shorncliffe - another Edmund Rice School - I was given a copy of a book titled Sheer Challenge by a senior student whom I had the pleasure to teach. The book immediately interested me because I had had the opportunity to meet and listen to one of its characters on a number of occasion, Dr John Taske, who is a local anaesthetist here in Brisbane. Dr Taske was part of that much publicized and ill-fated climb to Mt Everest in May 1996 that was lead by Michael Groom, another Brisbanite.

TERRACE: THE NEW AND THE OLD The retiring Principal (Dr McManus) and the new (Mr Chapman) meet the 2004 Captain and Vice-Captains:Andrew Stephenson, David Hill and Matthew Torbey

Attending a presentation to a group of students and staff late last year, Dr Taske told us repeatedly of the many challenges he faced in his climb.

He told us of the exceptional effort required just for him to make it to the starting line – the base of the climb in Katmandu. He told us of the intense cold and the disorienting effects of the thinning air, which made every step a new challenge in itself. He told us of the sheer cliffs and grave dangers in forgetting the risks of the mountain below.

And yet the most important lesson from Dr Taske was not about standing, as it were, on top of the world, but rather about trying to get there. For despite all his efforts, Dr Taske never reached the summit of Mount Everest. An impeding storm forced him to turn back, just two hundred vertical meters from the top of an eight thousand eight hundred meter mountain. I think his story is relevant as a constant reminder that real achievement comes not just to those who make their every milestone – who reach their every goal – but to all those who dare to take the challenge. EDMUND RICE EDUCATION AT TERRACE, 2004 His story, I think is a reminder of the ever present risk that in the rarefied From left: Dr Bill Sultmann (Executive Director Edmund Rice air of high peaks, students and schools alike will fixate their gaze on the Education), Andrew Stephenson, Br Luke Quinn (Province Leader, summit, yet ignore the massive mountain below. He graduated as a doctor in 1942 and then followed war service from May 1944 until demobilisation in 1947. He was the “A” Grade captain in 1949-50 and in the late 1950s was induced to make a comeback in Clem Jones’ successful C grade sides obtaining success with bat and ball, while helping younger members of the club with his advice. Red was a fast medium swing bowler and a dashing lower middleorder batsman - on one occasion he scored 119 not out in 81 minutes against Norths. As a bowler he took 7 wickets in one innings on one occasion and five wicket hauls on at least eight occasions. He was invited to the State practice Squad both before and after his war service. He figured in such Truth headlines as “Red Quinn Knocks ‘Em Blue”, “Medico-man Red Quinn operated with purpose” and “Doc dispenses do-or die Dope”. In season 1943-44 with limited appearances he topped the QCA bowling averages with 36 wickets at 9.16 average. t was a surprise to hear from Bill Warren (1929-1935) recently, espe-cially since it is now seventy years since he was at “The Terrace”. It was also a delight since I had recently met with fellow student Frank Overell - see p7. “I was a student from 1929-1935 with Br Kearney as Headmaster followed by Br Reidy 1931-1934. My sons Grahame (55-61), Brian (5765) and Tony (60-67) were all Terracians. I still sing “Sixty years have now passed o’er us” composed of course by Br Kearney. Now 85 years old I’m certain that Br Reidy and his training helped me in my private, business and family life. “In my Junior Year I was selected Captain of the First XV, coached by Br Reidy - we won only a few games! But I was never beaten when playing handball with the Brothers after school on a Thursday afternoon. On one occasion a new Brother, fresh from his training, with Terrace his first school and with a reputation as being a top player, had been giving Frank Shine (1931-34) and me a tough time - Frank finished later as parish priest of Coolangatta!. We decided it was time to give a little ‘pay-back’. So on a signal to Frank I put the ball high in his direction giving him no alternative other than to take it....with Frank and I taking him out! Br Reidy came over and I was expecting a stern rebuke. He said, ‘Fine tackle, Billy!’ “Years later when he was in retirement at Nudgee Junior I called on him and he welcomed me with, ‘Fine tackle, Billy!’ “When I was leaving Terrace in Sub-Senior he handed me a silver vase he had taken from the Chapel. He said, ‘This is to remind you of your time at Terrace.’ He was a dedicated and brilliant Brother and man!” [Many thanks, Bill, for your memories. It is good for those of us who knew Br Reidy only as an old man to appreciate your regard for him. INAUGURAL MASS

T

his was the first time since 1993 that Dr McManus had not been the Principal officiating at the beginning of a school year. For every student and many of the staff this was a new experience and so we began with the theme: We hold a treasure not made of gold, in earthen vessels wealth untold”. During the ceremonies Miss Heidi Cooper from the Art Department worked on the potter’s wheel as a practical demonstration of the theme. [Photo at right] First, Mr Chapman was commissioned as the new Principal of Terrace. The leader of the Christian Brothers, Brother Luke Quinn said, “Peter, on behalf of the Edmund Rice Community I appoint you to leadership of this faith community of St Joseph’s. Know that in your leadership your God walks with you.” Then all, parents, staff, Brothers and students said, Peter, this community centred on Christ calls you by name to lead us to ever more deeply embrace the Gospel. And when Mr Chapman accepted the call to lead the community, the community responded with loud acclamation. This was followed by the whole Leadership Team and members of the College staff all standing and joining in committing to their ministry during the coming year. The procession of the Senior class and the blessing and distribution of the Senior badges came after this. Members of the College Leadership Team, House Deans and the College Captain and Vice-Captains presented the Seniors of 2004 with their badges. Then the parents of the class pinned the badges on their sons who then signed their names on banners as a sign of their commitment to be the voice of God in our community. Then followed the Senior Pledge for 2004. Mr Chapman is commissioned by Br Luke Quinn After the first part of the Gospel, read by Ben Winkle (12K), the House Captains for 2004 came in alphabetical order, Barrett House: Nicholas Young and Nicholas Downey; Kearney House: Robert Hilmer and William Hickson; Mahoney House: Timothy O’Shea and Thomas Boosey; Reidy House: Thomas Dunworth and Joseph Ryan; Treacy House: John McGraw and Matt Fr Frank Brennan blesses the Badges Roberts; Windsor House: Guy Bursle and Christopher Stormon; the Vice-Captains: David Hill and Matthew Torbey and the College Captain: Andrew Stephenson, received their badges of service from Fr Frank Brennan SJ, Mr Peter Chapman, Dr Bill Sultmann and Br Luke Quinn. They then recited their Leadership Pledge and the Gospel was completed by Paul Clarke (12B). This was followed by Fr Brennan’s homily. Mass came next and the distribution of Communion. Just before the concluding rites the new College Captain, Andrew Stephenson, gave his reflection on the ceremonies and some of his hopes for the year. Finally the newly installed Principal, Mr Peter Chapman, also spoke thanking the students and their parents for their support and hoping that with the staff, 2004 which had started so well would be a year of blessing for everybody. The College Leadership Team pledges to serve Mr P. Fullagar, Mr P.Chapman, Mr M. Connolly, Mr D. Price, Miss V. Sargent, Mrs J. Quinn, Mr M. Broad

On completion of the ceremonies all the Seniors and the newly appointed Captain, Vice-Captains and House Leaders together with their parents moved to the areas where refreshments were provided. It was a great chance for staff and parents to congratulate the newly inducted College leaders. LAST DAYS OF WWI (By Martin Kerby)

VISITING THE ARCHIVES ON DAY ONE!

H

ere is an extract from some of the pages dealing with the end of World War I taken from Martin Kerby’s book on Terracians at War: On 6 August 1917 Colonel JP McSharry, the College’s most decorated Old Boy, was mortally wounded during heavy shelling while helping a wounded man to shelter, two weeks short of the fourth anniversary of his enlistment. The battalion history recorded the impact of his death on his men, some of whom had served under him since Gallipoli. The loss of McSharry at this juncture was severely felt. Members of his battalion regarded him as the finest colonel in the AIF. Out spoken to a degree of bluntness that at times was most alarming, intermingled as it was with a caustic wit, he voiced his opinions in council without fear or favour, tearing to shreds any weakness that appeared to him apparent in any scheme of attack. His friends were innumerable, for his strong personality attracted friends and forced others into open enmity. There are hundreds of stories relating to his contempt of danger. His funeral and interment at Corbie at 6pm on the day he was killed was conducted in the presence of two generals and a number of other officers. The funeral was even more subdued than may have even been expected given that the enlisted men were unable to attend. However in the evening small groups made their way to the cemetery to spend a few moments’ contemplation at the grave that held all that remained of their much loved Commanding Officer. These quiet pilgrimages continued until the troops left France, long after the Armistice was signed. The final Allied Offensive of the War which culminated in the breakthrough at Amiens on 8 August 1918 by Australian and Canadian infantry supported by British tanks, was the first time all five Australian Divisions would engage in a battle. General Ludendorff described it as a black day for the German Army, to the extent that he concluded that the War had to be ended. Despite this realisation, the fighting continued until 11 November. St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace lost another Old Boy when JR Childs (9th Bn) was killed on August 11, 1918. Nevertheless the attacks at Hamel and Amiens were resounding successes and laid the groundwork for an even more important victory at Mont St Quentin at the end of August and the seizing of Peronne on 2 September. General Rawlinson described it as the finest feat of the war and it added to the growing reputation the Australians had established for themselves. JB Affleck (26th Bn), MJ Clair (47th Bn), LA Carmody (4th FAB), N Hill (26th Bn), JB Dowling (5th MG Bn), FC Hickling (4th Div MT Coy), T Croakley and EL Alcock ((9th Bn) were wounded in these final actions. During the assault OJ Lawson (26th Bn) won the Military Cross in an act not dissimilar to others which resulted in the award of the Victoria Cross. He was in charge of a party of twelve men pinned down by a German machine gun. He jumped out of the trench into the open and charged the post singlehanded, killed three of the gun’s crew and putting the remainder to flight. A few moments later he repeated the performance on another machine gun post, but was severely wounded. The Second Division had over thirteen hundred casualties in these two actions: RH Monteith and O Lawson (26th Bn) on 2 September; the Third Division suffered six hundred including CL Collin (42nd Bn) and HV Horstmann (3rd AFA) on 1 September; and the Fifth Division lost eleven hundred, but none from Terrace. The last Old Boy killed in World War One was JB Harvey (40th Bn) on 29 September, 1918. During the advance on the Hindenberg Line a Very Light was fired by the Germans over his position followed by a burst of machine gun fire. Harvey was hit twice in the head and died instantly. Even though the guns fell silent on 11 November 1918, there was one final enemy that threatened the lives of Australian soldiers. An influenza epidemic swept Europe at the end of the war, exacerbated by the severe winter of 19181919. Numerous Old Boys would be hospitalised suffering through influenza and amongst their number were: JT Bradburne (5th FAB), MD Colch (49th Bn), TE Canniffe (13 DUS), WS Armstrong (9th Bn), EA Thomas (9th Bn) and AJ Benvueniti (15 Bn). Almost 19 million people died during the epidemic, more than had died on the battlefield in the previous four years. The College was spared any deaths, although MK Barry (2nd LH) died of malaria and blackwater fever on Anzac Day 1919 just as his ship berthed in Australia.

BARRETT YEAR 8 CAMP, 2004

O

ur front cover for March shows Donald Mar on the “pamper pole” looking down on his fellow Year 8 students at Camp Buckley at Maroon. Another view of the “pamper pole” can be seen at left. The building is the Conference Centre at Maroon. The Directors of Maroon (Mr J. Hughes and Ms J. Vran) spoke of the hot, stormy weather that Barrett students experienced and said that after 1.00 am one night the water level gradually rose round the campsite and rivers of water ran through tent flies. Many thought later that one of the unforgettable experiences they had was being shuttled across the creek on Ms Vran’s “troop carrier”

THE BEST LAID PLANS... Mr Matt Elston, one of the Terrace Campus Ministers, looks on as Year 8 Barrett students pack the “troop carrier” as part of their evacuation of the “Campout” site soon after 1.00 am on Tuesday morning! (No one is very recognisable at this stage of proceedings!) MORNING ALREADY??? ASH WEDNESDAY: START OF LENT, 2004

A

s part of our Ash Wednesday paraliturgy two rowing machines (“ergos” or ergometers which display to the rower his strength, his rate, distance covered, etc) were set up in the middle of the Campbell Centre - see the photo above where they can be seen on the platform along with many glass containers with the ashes which were blessed and distributed during the ceremony. Open First VIII rowers, John Beaton (12T) and Stephen Cook (12T), spent some time on the machines to emphasise the link betwen the discipline that Lent calls us to and the call to be people of love. Just as the rower trains hard to discipline his body and gain physical fitness in preparation for the “Head of the River” so too we are called to do an “inner ergo” to help prepare us to be people of the Gospel. The theme for this year’s Lenten season here at Terrace is “Seek the Highest”. These words are in large letters at the back of the Campbell Centre and will remain there for all of Lent.

M

ichael Toon was at Terrace from 1992-1996. He had been born with a serious heart defect and underwent various surgery procedures at Prince Charles Hospital. He was fitted with a pacemaker in 1986 and is on daily medication to control his heart beat. Now he becomes an Olympian! Because of his heart condition he was unable to participate in normal sporting activities. His brother, Matthew, a keen sportsman suggested he try coxing when he came to Terrace, so he started during the first week at his new school. (And so he coxed the Under 15 Fifth Four - and they came last!) In 1994 he coxed the U16 first eight and tried for First VIII cox in 1995, but went on to cox the Second Eight to a Head of the River with Simon Daly as his coach. Next year he was the First Eight cox and they won the Head of the River! Later in the year he coxed the Australian Junior Coxed Four in Belgium, then returned to school to complete his Year 12 - he obtained an OP of 2. He has competed in U23 World Championships in the Australian Eight in 1997, 1998 (Gold Medal) and 2000 (Silver Medal). Our best wishes for your Australian Coxed Four in Athens!
