From the Principal
Dear members of the Terrace Family,
Welcome to the first edition of the Terracian for 2019. In this edition we are treated to a richness of stories and information about Terracians, past and present, making a difference in so many ways.
The year has begun very well with much happening in and out of the classroom. From our special Opening Mass to the Cricket tour, new engineering classrooms, Music camp and Scholars’ Assembly, this term has been full of highlights.
At the Scholars’ Assembly, we welcomed back 37 young men from the 2018 Year 12 cohort, to congratulate them on receiving an OP1. This was an outstanding achievement and testament to their hard work and dedication. I was also privileged to witness three of these young men, Dominic Previtera, Ben Panizza and Tom Waldie be presented with a prestigious 2018 QCAA Academic Achievement Award.
The impact of Terracians continues to be significant and diverse. The stories of Mr George Arkinstall, Mr Mike Lepre and Mrs Juliette Wright are inspirational and great role modelling for all in the Terrace Family, as is the lengthy connection of the Smith Family to Terrace. This edition also recognises and congratulates the achievements of Mr Hugh Lunn and Mr David Conry for their contributions to our society.
This year is shaping up to be another special and diverse year for Terrace. In our 144th year, this great College continues to be a significant part of Catholic Education in Brisbane and Terracians, past and present, continue to make a difference globally.
I look forward to our journey together in 2019.
God Bless.

Opening Mass and Senior Induction
The strong sense of community and partnership were on display at the Opening Mass and Senior Induction held at the University of Queensland on 8 February. From the large number of parents present, the Year 11 parent helpers and the staff, to the 2019 Seniors, the feeling of connection to the Terrace Family was felt by all involved. The Seniors of this year have chosen the theme ‘All In’; a call to take part and be a part of everything that is Terrace.

Academic Excellence
Another year of outstanding academic success
The story of academic excellence was celebrated in February this year with two special assemblies. The first was the annual Scholars’ Assembly where the College invited the 37 young men who were awarded an OP1 back to the College to receive recognition for their outstanding hard work. College Dux Jacob Montaner spoke to the assembly of the commitment, collegiality and support that existed amongs the cohort and their teachers. He encouraged the current students to continue to foster the strong ‘Culture of Learning’ that permeates Terrace. Nikolai Wightman was awarded the Student Award for his his dedication to improving his academic outcomes.
An Academic Assembly was held the following week to celebrate the 337 students who were presented with medals for their academic achievements in Semester 2 in 2018. The young men worked hard to gain these excellent results. The teachers and parents who supported, guided and nurtured the students were thanked by Dr Carroll for their strong partnership.

Social enterprise at Bertonni
Two years ago, Bertonni was little more than an idea. Mr Mike Lepre GT 2002, was looking for a way to combine his passion for design and his desire to help those less fortunate. Through social enterprise Mike has seen his idea come to life.
Bertonni creates meaningful employment for homeless and vulnerable young people to handcraft beautiful porcelain products. Bertonni employees are involved in the many aspects of production. They are taught technical ceramics skills, as well as the art of craftsmanship. They also develop soft skills that can often be missing, such as confidence, self-awareness and the ability to structure a day. It has been a steep learning curve not just for his first two employees, but for Mike as well. Although he comes from a background in design, Mike hadn’t touched clay since his art class days at Terrace.
What would make a designer and entrepreneur want to work with homeless and vulnerable young people? Mike’s first experience working with the disadvantaged was at Terrace when he volunteered with Eddie’s Van. Mike says Terrace gives you a well-rounded education, and one which has a unique focus on social justice in the spirit of Edmund Rice.
This spirit carried on after Mike left Terrace and saw him continue to volunteer with Eddie’s Van, and spend ten years volunteering with

Camps provide holiday recreational activities for children who may not otherwise have the opportunity. Mike has also volunteered with Orange Sky Australia and developed the business Only T with Nicholas Marchesi GT 2011 and Lucas Patchett GT 2011.
With the help of a Brisbane City Council funded social enterprise accelerator, and with crowdfunding through ING Australia’s Dreamstarter program, Mike was able to begin Bertonni and employ his first two staff members. Rachael and Simon have both come from

disadvantaged backgrounds and have faced more challenges in their young lives than anyone should in a whole lifetime. At Bertonni they have found a safe and secure work environment where they feel empowered to move forward with their lives.
Mike has kept his connection with Terrace through the Terrace Enterprise Network, where he has spoken about his experiences starting Bertonni, and offered advice to the students involved in the weekly co-curricular activity for budding entrepreneurs.
Moving forward, Mike has plans to grow the business to create more meaningful employment opportunities for disadvantaged young people. Bertonni’s porcelain pieces can be ordered online through their website. They make great gifts for special occasions such as engagements, weddings, and birthdays, or as a statement piece for your own home. They are also perfect as high-end corporate gifts, and Mike can even work to customise pieces to suit your company or brand. If you would like to know more about Bertonni you can contact Mike through his website www.bertonni.com.au

Gardening a Difference
Social enterprise is a growing business, and Terrace Old Boys and members of the Terrace Family are making a difference throughout the community with their unique entrepreneurial contributions.
Mr George Arkinstall GT 2012, started Gardening a Difference to create a job for his brother Harry who has autism and was struggling to find work. The business has since grown to provide supportive employment for individuals on the autism spectrum and those facing mental health issues.
The mission of Gardening a Difference is to build and maintain beautiful gardens and support individuals of all ages who are struggling to live a fulfilling life within the workforce. George and Harry want to help Australians understand a little more about autism and how depression is affecting people of all ages in Australia.
Individuals are employed for a period of six to 12 months and are helped to transition into the
workforce. The program is broken into three progressive stages; physiology, psychology and community. By providing the training and support they need, Gardening a Difference can help individuals face and overcome the issues of autism, anxiety and mental health and become a part of something bigger. Charity is at the core of everything they do from the support provided to employees to fundraisers and community outreach.
Gardening A Difference wants to be more than just another business; they want to advocate change. When asked about Gardening a Difference George says:
Anyone can go out and do something like this, all you need to do is find something you are good at and something you are passionate about and you can achieve.
George was asked to leave Terrace in Year 11, and through this, he gained the insight that his negative actions had negative consequences. He is thankful to Terrace for the lesson that taught him to turn his negatives into positives and realise that positive actions have positive consequences. This positivity can be used to help others achieve the same. When asked if Terrace had any influence on his choices George said:
Terrace has the unique ability to create a desire to help others. The strong sense of community spirit makes you want to contribute to society and give something back.
Gardening A Difference is looking for service providers to help expand their supportive employment program. They would love help in areas such as adventure therapy, autism based programs, mental health programs, retreats, art therapy and nutritionists.

GIVIT joins the Terrace Family
As a new family at Terrace, Term 1 was a rollercoaster! I still tear up thinking about my son walking through the tunnel and knowing this was the beginning of his life changing journey. I looked around at all the other nervous and excited boys and knew when they all depart that same tunnel for the last time in 2026 they will be leaving as young men... and I know I will be crying all over again!
Written by: Mrs Juliette Wright
My father Dr John Ryan GT 1964, is from a long lineage of Terrace Gentlemen. My son Hudson’s Great Great Grandfather (also) John Ryan started on the Opening Day of the School on 5 July 1875. In 1964 my Great Grandfather Dr JJ Ryan donated a stained glass window in the new Chapel when Br “Doc” Campbell was Headmaster. I am sure if I were born a boy we would have an uninterrupted line of Ryans since day one. Alas, I was an only child, but I did marry “Mr Wright”.
The strong traditions of our College make my heart sing, not only because of our personal family history, but also because the students at Terrace in every class are taught that service to others is not a Sunday hour, but a daily practice and part of their humanity.
I once spoke at Terrace to Year 10 students many years ago about giving and volunteering, and I recall the questions the young men asked me. Our Terrace Gentlemen truly understood the importance of generosity.
My passion is to inspire children to be philanthropic, and how to have high impact, by ensuring the right people get the right things in the right way.
I founded an organisation called GIVIT 10 years ago. We match people (and corporates) who have items to give with those in need of
material aid. If you have a microwave or a pencil case you no longer need, I guarantee you that it will go to someone in urgent need. I just recently received a letter from a charity who requested a bike for a recently arrived refugee boy, who is thrilled he no longer has a 50 minute walk to school, and that a stranger cares about him.
Charities use GIVIT like Gumtree, except it is all free. They can look in GIVIT’s virtual warehouse for items they need, or request items for people who are impoverished, vulnerable or disadvantaged.
GIVIT is the biggest donation portal in Australia, and we have over 2650 charities requesting items on behalf of our most impoverished Australians. We manage offers of goods and services during disaster recovery for the Queensland Government and have facilitated over 175 000 items to those affected by the devastating monsoonal floods in Townsville and North West Queensland.
GIVIT facilitated over 1 100 000 donations, and I have learnt some incredibly surprising things about giving. I know that even very small donations can have a massive impact, but also that donations can do harm.
In Tropical Cyclone Debbie recovery GIVIT facilitated over 97 000 donations to those affected, thanks to very generous Queenslanders. We helped many people return to their homes, but imagine the impact
on local businesses if GIVIT came in with hundreds of trucks with all the donated fridges, mattresses and essential items needed. We would have hurt businesses that had also been devastated. Now, GIVIT not only asks for items to support those in need in your local areas but asks for funds to purchase items locally (particularly in drought) so that we also support local retail businesses.
Unfortunately, it is not exactly true that Australia is a lucky county, particularly for children. More than 733 000 children in Australia live in poverty. GIVIT has started a new program called GIVIT Schools - and it was inspired by a meeting I had with Terrace Xavier leaders in 2017.
GIVIT Schools (GIVIT.org.au/schools) aims to connect big-hearted schools who have items to give, to rural and remote schools in need. We are launching (phase one) this month! It would be exciting to see our Terrace classes or teams donate items to different projects, like sending our preloved soccer boots and gear to a remote Indigenous community who wants to start a football team, or supporting kids who are facing drought.
On behalf of my husband Glen, and my family, thank you for welcoming us to the Terrace Family.

Making music in 2019
Written by: Mr Jan Hewerdine
Each year the Co-Curricular Music Department holds a music camp for the week before the academic year commences. The camp provides an opportunity for our premier ensembles and other select groups to be involved in intensive rehearsals and deliveres the equivalent of five weeks of term time rehearsals. This year, the camp was held at the College and over two nights at the QCCC campsite at Brookfield. Under the leadership of Music Captain Jack Gardiner and Music Vice Captain Clancy Gundrum, it was an excellent opportunity for our Senior ensembles to bond and make great headway on repertoire for the year. By the end of the camp, the groups were sounding very strong indeed, promising a great year ahead for Terrace Music. An innovation this year was the two concerts which featured visiting professional groups, ‘Bullhorn’ and ‘Deep Blue’. Both concerts also provided the opportunity for some of our students to perform alongside the visitors. The motivation and personal buzz
that this gave the students extended well beyond the camp. Next year will bring new surprises for camp attendees. Next year’s camp will take place from 20 to 24 January (TBC).

New rooms for Design and Technology
Designed and built by Macksey Rush Architects, the new engineering rooms on the top floor of the Manual Arts building have given students a modern and real world learning environment to match the new Engineering syllabus available to Year 11 students this year and Years 11 and 12 next year.
Mr Damien Hanley the INTAD and Graphics Coordinator gave the architects input and advice in order to create the custom built rooms to provide modern learning. The prototyping space allows the students to quickly realise their designs and the testing apparatus enables them to test and verify their work. The space also includes a new computer laboratory and staff room.

K.M.Smith - a Terrace family
Brisbane’s family funeral firm K.M.Smith is not only Brisbane’s oldest, but it has proudly been in the same family for six generations. Its history links to Brisbane and also to the history of Terrace, with the first son attending the College in 1881 when Terrace was in its infancy.
The K.M.Smith story started in Ireland and followed Kate Mary Farrell and John Smith to Australia to make a new life in the Southern Hemisphere. It is in Australia that the family dynasty was made.
In 1864 Kate arrived in Somerset, the mainland adjacent to Port Albany in the Torres Strait. Also arriving in Somerset in July 1864, was John Smith, an infantryman with the Royal Marines who had been born in London in 1839 and arrived on the HMS Salamander. He became a water police constable and a report from 1864 notes that he was also paid by the Queensland Government to work as a carpenter.
John and Kate married in Somerset in January 1868, when Kate was 21 and John 29. Their first child, John Thomas Smith is likely to have been the first white child to have been born on the Cape York Peninsula.
Life was not easy, and the original inhabitants didn’t always welcome the British settlers. John was injured in an attack and suffered two serious spear wounds. It was serious enough for him to be sent to Sydney to recover. In 1874 Kate and John settled in Brisbane with three children. They went on to have another four children.
John set up shop as a cabinet maker in Elizabeth St, based
almost opposite the newly-built St Stephen’s Cathedral. He was also called upon occasionally to make a coffin. Brisbane was expanding rapidly, and it was not uncommon for a cabinetmaker or carpenter with a horse to also work as an undertaker.
In 1881 John and Kate’s son John William Smith arrived at Terrace. He was at the College for two years completing Sub-Junior and Junior which was common at the time. Most boys did not go through to their Senior year. Three years later, in 1885, John’s brother William came to Terrace.
During these years the family lived in South Brisbane and purchased an undertaking business in 1883. In subsequent years John became ill, suffering from consumption and weakened by his old injuries, died a few months later in May 1886, at just 42..
Kate had been running the business for some time with the assistance of her oldest son, John and after her husband’s untimely death, she took
April 2019 The Terracian 14
over the business. She learned how to embalm, a necessary skill in a hot climate but a rare one for a woman at a time when it was often unusual for women to even attend funerals much less work in the industry. Kate was to become Brisbane’s first female funeral director.
She soon changed the name to K.M.Smith. Kate continued to guide her business through a World War and the Great Depression. She died on 13 June 1932 and is buried in Toowong Cemetery with her husband.
William, meanwhile, had married and had a family of his own. His son Cyril Smith attended Terrace from 1922 to 1924. As the family business passed down through the generations, so too did their education at Terrace. In 1951 Allen Smith came to Terrace. Allen is a Director at K.M.Smith along with his sister Denise. Allen says of his time at Terrace: My years at Terrace were incredibly enjoyable and fulfilling and I considered myself lucky to be able to attend such a wonderful College.
Allen’s son Liam attended Terrace from 1984 through to 1991 and is the Chairman of K.M.Smith: I’ll never forget my first day of school at Terrace as a Year 5 student. Little did I know how transformative an experience it was going to be... Starting out as a shy, awkward child, a blank slate, so to speak, Terrace gave me the sporting, cultural and academic opportunities to thrive. Culminating in my investiture as the inaugural Windsor House head prefect in 1991, some of the best years of my life were those spent as a student in the Gregory Terrace Family.
One family spanning six generations of business and four generations and 110 years of education at Terrace.
The Terracian would like to thank Mrs Dot Wittington for her contribution to this article. Dot wrote the original history of the K.M.Smith family.

The 2018 Cricket tour to New Zealand
Written by: Mr Dwayne Hoy
The world around us is evolving; technology, business, politics, religion … and school cricket tours. Yes, as strange as it sounds, school cricket tours are evolving too. In December 2018, Terrace Cricket players set off to Auckland, New Zealand, for a seven day tour unlike any other undertaken by an Australian schoolboy team.
It is usual practice for schools to limit their touring parties to their best 15 or 16 players - those who are likely to be named in the 1st XI cricket squad for the coming season. But that is not the Terrace way. For the past six years we have toured with 35 players but for the 2018 tour, 44 players and nine staff were involved.
The rationale behind this approach is simple. Why reward only the very top players when there is an opportunity to reward those players who have contributed to the Terrace Cricket program all of their schooling life and are about to enter their Senior year? Realistically,
some of these students may never play 1st XI Cricket, some won’t ever play 2nd XI Cricket, but the culture and enthusiasm that flows on from a tour like this is priceless to a Cricket program such as ours.
The tour also allows the current Year 10 As to observe what it takes to get to the 1st XI level. These younger players are likely to be 1st XI players themselves in one or two years, so early exposure to the training and expectations involved in the top level of Terrace Cricket makes for a much calmer and more settled transition into the role.
The tour consisted of an initial training day, followed by five straight days of cricket against some of New Zealand’s best school teams, as well as District Representative teams from Auckland. Across the board, both on and off the field, the tour was a great success. Terrace won 16 of the 20 games played and the bonding from off field activities was outstanding. At Terrace, there is no culture of the 1st XI and the rest; the program is united and equal.
This raises the question, is it worthwhile to provide a tour to such a large group of students? With one game left to be played in the GPS season (at the time of writing), the answer is a resounding ‘yes’.
All teams who took part in the New Zealand Tour - the 1sts, 2nds, 11As and 10As are in the top three of their respective GPS competitions. As a program, Terrace Cricket is providing opportunities to a wide range of students and is clearly reaping the benefits.

Inter-House Swimming Carnival
On 15 February the first Inter-House carnival was held at the Centenary Pool. There was much anticipation for the event from both the new Years 5 and 7 students as well as the Seniors who kept the event a fun and lively competition for the rest of the College. Congratulations to Barrett House who took home the shield this year. However, the event was more than just about one House winning. It was about the students coming together and being a part of the whole Terrace Family, from the Seniors who swam behind their Year 5 buddies during their races to the joy and camaraderie shown by all who participated on the day.

Hugh Lunn inducted into the Australian Media Hall of Fame
In November 2018, Hugh Lunn GT 1959, was inducted into the Australian Media Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was founded in 2011 to highlight the work of media legends and show the importance of strong and independent journalism, and the importance of ensuring it continues.
Hugh’s media career began as a cadet at the Courier Mail before moving to Hong Kong, followed by London where he worked at the Daily Mirror before being sent to Vietnam as a war correspondent in 1967. After working in Indonesia, Hugh returned to Australia to work for the Australian in 1971. He wrote his award winning book Vietnam a Reporters War after returning to Australia, although it took 17 years to find someone to publish it.
Hugh is perhaps most well known at Terrace for his book Over the Top with Jim where he writes of his school day experiences at Terrace in the 1950s. The book became the highest selling Australian childhood memoir ever published.
In 2009 Hugh was named a Queensland icon alongside Geoffrey Rush, David Malouf, the Bee Gees and the Great Barrier Reef. He has won three Walkley awards for feature writing, the Advance Australia award for contribution to literature and the Age Book of the Year Award for literature.
In his acceptance speech for the Hall of Fame induction, Hugh gave this advice to the future feature writers of Australia. A feature writer’s job is to tell people something they don’t already know. If they do this, they will be successful feature writers.

A knock at the door in Harcourt Street
Written by: Mr Gerard Benjamin
Mr John Gates GT 1955, would have been only seven years old when his mother answered a knock on the front door of their home in Harcourt Street, Teneriffe in early 1944.
The caller was a RAAF serviceman impeccably outfitted in a khaki uniform.
Indicating the big house named Eroica across the road, he asked, Do you know if the Athertons are away — or maybe you could tell me if they will be back soon?
It is not known if Mrs Gates had heard the news: Flight Sergeant John Carman (‘Chappie’) Atherton GT 1931, a 30 year old RAAF mid-upper gunner on the Lancaster bomber had been killed on Christmas Eve 1943 in England.
John Gates explained: The airman said that he was a good friend of the Athertons’ son, and wished to tell them in what high esteem he was held. He also wanted to convey details of what had happened.
Compounding the tragedy was that Flight Sargeant Atherton’s death occurred when two fully-loaded
Lancasters collided as they climbed above Lincolnshire heading for a night raid on Berlin. The crews of both aircraft (14 in all) were lost.
The Lancaster belonged to a heavy bomber squadron formed at Waltham in November 1943 and was a part of what is commonly known as Bomber Command. Australians were posted to Bomber Command to join the RAF and fly bombing raids and reconnaissance missions into Germany. The RAAF personnel posted to Bomber Command had the highest loss rate of any cohort in the Australian Armed forces in WWII.
Atherton was one of over 110 Terrace Old Boys who joined the RAAF in WWII, many of whom lost their lives for their country.
Atherton was an only son. One hundred years earlier, his grandfather, as a boy, had emigrated with his parents from Lancashire
(170 miles from Cambridge) to Sydney, from where this pioneering family gradually moved north to the tableland behind Cairns which later bore their name.
At Terrace, he was remembered as a good rugby player and a prominent athlete. The 1931 College Yearbook states that Atherton was one of the best players in the forwards of the 1931 1st XV.
Atherton was buried with full service honours on 30 December 1943. His burial took place in Cambridge, his gravestone reading: Gave his life at duty’s call, loved by comrades one and all.
Editors Note: The author of this article, Mr Gerard Benjamin is also an Old Boy. He graduated in 1969. The Gates family has had a long association with Terrace, John’s sons Jeff and Brendan attended Terrace in 1984 and 1994 respectively. The welcomesCollege our Terraciansyoungest
As part of the orientation and welcome process into their life at Terrace, the new Year 5 students spent the first week taking part in school tours, talks, an introduction to Maroon and a trip to the College Museum and Archives.
When the boys visit the Museum, they can gain an understanding of the importance of our proud 144 year history and their place as a part of the Terrace Family and history of the College.

Red and black donations
Mr John Wilkinson GT 1974, his mother and four sisters visited Terrace in December 2018 to donate his school blazer and the blazer that belonged to his father Mr Cyril Wilkinson GT 1936. The Museum has never had matching father and son blazers donated before. John is a Golf Professional with 27 years experience as a Head Golf Professional, Director of Golf and Director of Golf Instruction at clubs throughout the United States and Australia. He is currently the Director of Golf Instruction at the Down Under Par Golf Academy in Springfield Ohio. John made a special trip to the College Museum during his holiday to Australia to donate the blazers.
Mr Robin Bechly GT 1958, donated his blazer to the Museum and Archives in 2018. Robin was one of four Bechly boys to attend the College in the 1950s, David, GT 1954, Terry GT 1957 and Adrian GT 1959. Robin retired in 2007 as the Commissioner of the Australian Industrial Relations Commission and has stayed an active part of the Old Boys Association organising reunions for the classes who attended Terrace between 1940 and 1958. (The blazer is in the photo behind the text on this page).
The most recent and perhaps one of the oldest items to be donated to the Museum is The Boy’s Own Annual. The book was awarded to Edward Shannon, GT 1901 for first place in the Elocution Competition in December 1894. The book was donated by the Byrne and O’Shea grandchildren of Edward O’Shea whose son in law Jock O’Shea GT 1932, grandsons John O’Shea GT 1964, Patrick O’Shea GT 1971, and great grandsons Joseph O’Shea GT 2001 and James O’Shea GT 2007 all attended Terrace, a family history spanning over 100 years.

Annual report of donors 2018
Today 2018
Our Foundation’s 32nd year saw the culture of philanthropy we are known for go from strength to strength and so on behalf of all Foundation Board Directors, I wish to thank each of our 1091 donors listed in this Annual Report for providing a gift to our boys. This list represents an 18% increase on the previous year and raised $1 792 921 which is an increase of 14% - all thanks to the generosity throughout the Terrace Family.
All gifts, large or small, either as a campaign pledge or a donation on our inaugural “Never Terrace Apart Old Boys’ Bursary Giving Day”, support generations of Terracians – thank you.
The following grants were made in 2018; $1 300 000 towards the Student Wellbeing Centre and $320 000 to the Bursary Fund which fully funded the College Bursary Program providing a bursary to 23 young men. The program continues as a successful outreach program currently providing boys with the opportunity to receive a Terrace education which otherwise would not be possible.
Our $10m+ Join the Journey Campaign continues to gather momentum as our campaign pledges topped $9 million. Thank you to each family behind the commitment to put Terrace in this incredible position. The 2018 Annual Giving Appeal raised $295 589 (up by 131%) in gifts from 387 donors (up by 132%), many of whom are Old Boys and ‘alumni’ parents. Of that amount it is wonderful to see that 43 Year 12 families made a Valedictory Gift from their Enrolment Bond to the Foundation totalling $49 425 (up by 38%).
Building work in progress. The Student Wellbeing Centre in 2018 and today
The Foundation is now fortunate to have three dedicated staff members in Mrs Lea Walker-Franks, Director of Development/Foundation Executive Officer, Mrs Carol Stephens, Administration Officer and Mrs Erin Bowpitt, Old Boys’ and Development Officer whose roles are integral to our programs. I would like to thank them for their efforts during the year.
Last year saw all Foundation Directors continue with David Stirling GT 1965 and Mrs Sarah Kelly joining the board. I also wish to thank my fellow Directors for their support and contribution in making 2018 an incredibly successful year for the Foundation.
Thank you for ‘joining the journey’ in building Terrace’s future together.

From the Principal
When funds were needed in the 17th century, Br Ambrose Treacy rode on horseback visiting families to ask for support. Times have changed, but the mission remains the same. It is clear that the spirit of philanthropy has not only been a significant part of Terrace’s history; it is at the heart of who we are today. As a testimony to the staggering generosity of the Terrace Family, the $10m+ Join the Journey Campaign has now tipped over $9m in gifts and pledges which both reduces pressure on tuition fees and helps enormously with our planning.
To see Giving Day unfold and finish with over double what we hoped to raise was truly astounding! Those gifts, as well as families honouring their pledges, meant that the College was able to receive a grant of $1.62m from the Foundation last year alone – thank you to all.
I would like to thank the Board Chair Mr Damian Wright GT 1983, Deputy Chair John Clifford and Directors Mrs Louise Griffin, Mr Anthony Joseph GT 1993, Mrs Mary Macuga, Ms Christine Maher, Mr David Stirling GT 1965, Dr Tony Mills GT 1986, Mrs Andrea Splatt, Mrs
Sarah Kelly, Br Ted Walker; and new members Dr George Hopkins GT 1984 and Michael Maranta GT 1978. Special thanks to Justin Byrne GT 1988 now retired for his years of service. Director of Development/ Foundation Executive Officer Mrs Lea Walker-Franks, Mr Adam Read, Dean of Business Operations/ Secretary, Foundation Administration Officer Mrs Carol Stephens and Old Boys’ and Development Officer Mrs Erin Bowpitt.
I would like to acknowledge each donor for being an essential part of securing the very foundations of Terrace’s future.

From the GTOBA
This year marks 120 Years of the Gregory Terrace Old Boys’ Association. The first committee was formed in 1899. By 1902, the GTOBA already had over 200 members. To mark the 120th Anniversary, all events this year will be celebrating this milestone. It is a real honour to be President in this special year, and to my knowledge, I have broken a long line of Lawyers and Financiers to be the first Architect taking this position.
The Annual Dinner on Saturday 27 July will be the showcase event of the year. I encourage all Old Boys to save the date for this event and come and celebrate 120 Years of the GTOBA on the night.
The GTOBA year got off to a great start as we welcomed five new members onto the committee and bid farewell to Mr Anthony Karam GT 1987 and Mr Harry Tynan GT 2007. We thank Anthony and Harry for all of their hard work over the years.
The President’s Drinks were held on Friday 1 March at Wests Rugby Club. Just over 140 Old Boys were in attendance with Old Boys from the Class of 1967 through to the youngest Old Boys from the Class of 2017. The Class of 2014 held their five year reunion in conjunction with the President’s Drinks and had over 80 in attendance.
This year also marks 65 years of Terrace Rowing. As a Terrace rower, coach and long time supporter of Terrace Rowing it was an absolute pleasure to be at the Head of the River on 16 March to witness the fabulous performance of the Terrace crews. I was extremely proud of our rowers, coaches and the parents for the many wins, places and sterling effort on the day. This has been the result of years of hard work and dedication. To be within a whisker of winning both cups for the
season confirms us as the school to beat for the years to come.
The Br Buckley Breakfast was another hugely successful event which took place on Thursday 28 March at the Queensland Cricketers’ Club. The new venue was the talking point with a newly renovated interior and views across the Gabba pitch. The breakfast attracted 209 people which was made up of Old Boys and the Terrace Family. Guest speaker Professor Peter Greste gave an engaging address and told his story about his incarceration in an Egyptian prison where he was held for over 400 days. Special thanks go to our event sponsors: Woollam Constructions, Morgans, Dr Anthony Crombie, JLL, Rohrig and Sunfresh Linen and Macksey Rush Architects.

Networking events
The start of 2019 has already been a busy one with the President’s Drinks, London networking event, the Melbourne Vintage Terracian afternoon drinks and Melbourne networking event. The President’s Drinks was held on Friday 1 March at Wests Rugby Club with over 140 Old Boys in attendance.
On Friday 22 March, events were held in Melbourne to bring the Old Boy community together. The Vintage Terracian afternoon drinks held at The Bank on Collins saw Vintage Terracians from the 1950s gather together over an afternoon drink. The networking event that night saw 26 Old Boys in attendance. Sydney events have been confirmed for Friday 14 June.

An inclusive community
The term ‘alumni’ can be traced back to its Latin origin meaning “pupil”, literally “the nurtured”. At Terrace, we are using the term in its broadest sense to include past parents and staff as ‘Alumni Parents’ and ‘Alumni Staff’. Everyone has their place in the Terrace Family and it is important to provide ways to stay connected and to continue to ‘nurture’ this connection.
One example occurred on Tuesday 19 March when members of the inaugural “Women of Terrace Syndicate” attended a morning tea to mark the beginning of this extraordinary group. These 16 women have banded together to collectively fund one bursary boy through his six year Terrace journey. While the actual boy is anonymous, the picture above alludes to the significance of this ‘Giving Circle’ made up of future, current and alumni mothers and staff members.
Mrs Nadia Vedelago explained, I am very pleased to be part of the group to pay tribute to my grandfather, Harry Steinheuer GT 1926, who became a school teacher. His son, my uncle, Dr Peter Steinheuer GT 1973,
focussed on the care of marginalised members of the community. They would be proud of the purpose of this group - to identify and fund the education of boys who would be enriched by not only the academic advantages, but also benefit from the holistic support of the Terrace Family. In the spirit of these community minded Terrace Old Boys, I am grateful to be able to contribute to the education expenses for modern day Terrace bursary students.

Establishing the United Kingdom Old Boys network
‘The Old Terracians in the UK’ dinner was held on 6 March. This event came together incredibly quickly. Only a few weeks before it there were only 26 known Old Boys living in the UK. After calling on the Old Boys for assistance in helping to track down as many UK Old Boys as possible, we now know of 95 Old Boys living in the UK. Thanks to event ambassadors Mr Gus Innes GT 1988 and Mr Scott Gardner GT 1987 (above centre) the historic dinner saw 36 Old Boys come together signifying support of the establishment of an official UK Old Boys network.

Terrace Flashback
This Flashback is dedicated to the cultural side of Terrace life. For as long as there has been sport, there have also been cultural endeavours. Some of the earliest College Yearbooks talk about the choir and band. Debating and Chess have also been favourite pastimes of students for many generations.
1969 – The Chess Club executive: John Heike, Terry Beer and William Williams.
1979 – The Senior A Debating team won the QDU All Schools Championships undefeated. The team was made up of Stephen Ohlrich, Brett Morgan and Bryan Horrigan (Captain).
1989 – The highlight of the year for the Terrace Concert Band was their first tour to Roma, Longreach – where they performed at the Stockman’s Hall of Fame, Emerald, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg and Maryborough.
1999 – Before there was House Choir there was the Terrace Battle
of the Bands, a fierce competition between the bands of Terrace. In 1999, the winning band consisted of James Douglas, Aaron Irving, Jon Weber, Tim Siebert, Anthony Mcllwain, John Pickering, Tony Ronaniuk and Sal Borzillo.

Vale Vale
The Terrace Family mourns the passing of three of our distinguished Terracians. Architect Mr Cecil Hargraves, commentator and presenter Mr Billy J Smith and original member of the Terrace Foundation Board Dr John Herron. These men leave their legacy to the Terrace Family, having lived their lives of faith, humility and wisdom.
Dr John Herron
Original Foundation Board member
Dr Herron passed away on 25 February, aged 86. He was a father, politician, ambassador and surgeon. Dr Herron was a Senator in the Federal Parliament for 12 years, including five years as Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, and was Ambassador to Ireland and the Holy See from 2003 to 2005.
Cecil passed away in February this year aged 89. He was a student at Terrace from his Sub-Junior year through to Senior in 1947. After university Cecil was employed at architectural practice, Frank L Cullen and Partners. He accepted a partnership in 1960 when the practice became Frank L Cullen, Hargraves and Mooney and remained a partner until 1997. The architectural practice had a long history with Terrace and was responsible for designing many of the buildings around the College, including the Manual Arts building and the Centenary project. He was also involved in the design of many banks, hospitals and government buildings. His passion was in the architecture of the church, and his design influence can be seen on many churches throughout Queensland. He received an Australian Institute of Architects Life Fellowship in 2016.
Billy J Smith passed away at the age of 73 in Brisbane. He was a well known and loved character as a rugby league commentator for radio and television and popular game show host for It’s a Knockout in the 1980s. Billy played an important part in rugby league history, calling the very first State of Origin at Lang Park. He worked in Queensland media for 50 years. His well known voice will be missed in Brisbane. Billy’s son Joel Smith is a Terrace Old Boy, GT 1989 and his grandson Jack Hunter Smith is currently in Year 7.
Before entering Parliament, he was a general surgeon for 30 years. Outside his surgical and political careers, he was an officer in The Royal Australian Army Medical Corps and a Squadron Leader in the Royal Australian Air Force.
Father to Old Boy John Herron
GT 1993. Dr Herron was also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Australia, England and Edinburgh.
Amongst his many honours and awards, Dr Herron was awarded a Knight Commander of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and a Papal Knight of St Gregory. He was named an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2012 for distinguished service to Parliament, international relations through diplomatic and humanitarian roles, to professional medical associations and the community. In 2012 he was also awarded Doctor of the University, the highest honour at the Australian Catholic University.
A State funeral was held for Dr Herron in Brisbane on 1 March.
