College Principal’s Page

Welcome to the first edition of the Terracian for 2008, and in particular I would like to welcome those first time readers who join us in the circulation of our quarterly magazine which attempts to capture something of the latest activities of the College.

Recent good news was our success at the Head of the River Rowing Championships. At the College Assembly on 18 March we were able to extend our congratulations to the First VIII Rowers who returned the O’Connor Cup to Terrace with an outstanding victory at Lake Kawana on Saturday 15 March. This year the GPS Rowing competition celebrated its 90th anniversary and the last time that Terrace won the Head of the River was on 23 March 1996. The success of our Rowers comes from our home grown talent: Captain of Boats Nick Ritchie and Vice Captains Alex ButtonSloan and Robert Gilbert; the enthusiasm and infectious leadership of our Director of Rowing, Mr Damian Wright, supported by his team of coaches - many of whom are parents, Old Boys and friends of the College - along with the strength and organisation of Terrow chaired by Mr Ted Stewart.

In a back-to-back celebration, the College also won the Old Boys’ Cup as the strongest rowing school for the season. To win both Cups is an outstanding effort and a first for Terrace. We congratulate all rowers on what was a great day for the community. In acknowledging the success of our rowers I would also like to express my thanks to the many supporters who stood lakeside on Saturday in support and encouragement. What a great day!

In 2006 I had the opportunity to travel to South Africa to attend the International Boys Schools Coalition Conference in Johannesburg. The International Boys Schools Coalition gathers educators from around the world to share something of best practice and to share in research relevant to the education of boys in the western world.

(12T). As Mr Chapman says above, “The Senior student can walk the new student through his first few weeks or months so he has a clear understanding of the life and culture of St Joseph’s College community.”

The South Africa conference focussed on the growing propensity for violence amongst boys. An interesting topic and one that was quite provocative in stirring the Conference participants.

The South Africans began the discussion by talking about issues in their context in South Africa and it was two American psychologists who shared their insights around the tragic event that happened at Columbine on 20 April 1999.

While there were some interesting exchanges and discussions created, one of the clear realisations coming from both the South Africans and the Americans was the importance of having significant adults strategically positioned in the lives of young men, particularly in those formative years of adolescence.

As new students enter the College, it is important that we ensure that there will be significant adults who will support them during the five or eight years they may be here. With each new student entering Year 5 or Year 8 we attempt to put five significant adults around each of them. These include their House Dean, Tutor, Sports Coach or someone from the cultural area, a “Big Buddy” who is a Senior student who can walk the new student through his first few weeks or months so that he has a clear understanding of the life and culture of the community, and their Core Teacher who will teach him for a number of subjects.

It is always our wish that they will connect with at least one or more of these significant people, which will underpin the best of what we can

offer during their time at Terrace. First and foremost, for effective teaching and learning and personal and spiritual development will be the quality of our relationships and the way we welcome students into the community. Our success in the broad sense is directly proportional to the quality of our relationships. In 2009 the College will move to three additional Houses with the view to further strengthening the quality of relationships which is fundamental to good communities.

The quality of relationships fundamental to academic success was again reflected in the outstanding academic results that were demonstrated by the Senior class of 2007 in attaining a median score of a 7 compared to a State median of 13. Twenty-one students of last year’s cohort were ranked in the top 1% of the State, being awarded an overall performance score of 1.

Elsewhere in this edition of the Terracian, the Foundation acknowledges the generosity of its many donors in 2007. The College Foundation is the capital arm of the College and over the years has very generously supported a number of significant developments which the current group of Terracians and staff have indeed appreciated, and it is on behalf of the current community that we thank all for their generosity.

One of the names on this year’s Australia Day Honours List was Br Barry Buckley, very well known to Terrace students and their parents. He was a student in 1951-52, joined the teaching staff in 1961-69 and then again from 1973-1981 as Headmaster. His Award stated: Br Buckley was also involved in many other areas apart from

CONTINUING A FAMILY TRADITION

First Day, 2008

As usual the College started with Seniors and boys who were starting in Year 5 or entering Year 8 as new or continuing students attending. It was a great experience of leadership for the Year 12 students who had “buddies” allocated to them from the new Year 5 boys in their House.

Many are like the three students below whose family names are well-known to Terracians back to the 1930s. They have cousins, fathers, uncles, grandfathers who have all worn the “Red and Black”!

A Terracian Adventurer

David John Vance was born in Atherton, North Queensland, in 1931, and died at his home in Townsville in February 2006. He spent his childhood years in Brisbane and completed his secondary education at Terrace 1945-48. He graduated from University of Queensland in 1957 with a degree in mining engineering.

David was adventurous and in his younger days he worked as a miner in Tennant Creek, Mount Isa, Alligator River, Broome, Newcastle and many other far-flung places. He was known as “Ruggedy Dave” Vance. In 1960 he married Margaret (Hosie) and they had three children David, Matthew and Mary. In 1960 he was also appointed in charge of a BHP exploration group near the Northern Territory. It was a challenging environment, moving in its space, solitude and abundance of birds and wildlife and the couple had many happy memories of their first home there.

He subsequently worked in the harsh extremes of Mt Magnet near the edge of the WA desert . In 1966 he made his first visit to Bolivia and returned in 1967 with the family; they stayed for two years in a tinmining village on the Alto Plano. The family returned to Townsville for a while. Then in 1973-74 David was involved in exploration for BHP in East Timor and the family moved to Same, a village in the mountains, where they enjoyed a loving relationship with the gentle, courteous people of East Timor. David’s passion for travelling took him to Mali in West Africa, the Highlands of PNG

and Vietnam. In his retirement he was an enthusiastic bridge player and a past director of the Townsville Bridge Club. He also did voluntary work with the St Vincent de Paul, where he enjoyed the companionship of his “Vinnies mates”.

May he rest in peace

[Many thanks to David’s wife of so many years who has provided the information and the photo.]

A NEW LOOK!

This is how Terrace looks after the excitement over Waterford Place has abated! It certainly shows the size of the addition to the College facilities. When we remember that in 1960 the College consisted of three buildings in the top corner of the property, the increase is remarkable - an example of the unity of Brothers, Staff and Parents.

Ash Wednesday

The 2008 Ash Wednesday ceremony was designed to make the students think of the meaning of Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Takeq Van Oosterom (12R) read from the prophet Isaiah about fasting: “removing the chains of oppression and the yoke of injustice; letting the oppressed go free; sharing your food with the hungry; opening your homes to the homeless; giving clothes to those with nothing and not refusing to help those in need.”

Staff, students and Old Boys shared personal stories about people who are powerless through their circumstances. They challenged the students to action the words of Isaiah through their Lenten journey. Ash Wednesday is the start and often the determination with which we start influences the entire journey.

Who are the prophets of Terrace? Those who keep us focused on the vision of Edmund; who ask us to recognise the dignity of each person; to nurture right relationships; to commit ourselves to those in need or those unrecognised.

The Ashes were blessed by Mr Peter Marendy, Head of Faculty of RE and distributed by Mr Chapman, senior Staff and Year 12 students.

We answer the call to repent and forgive.

A tragic World War 2 Accident

Pat McNulty (1922-1945) worked in the Government Printing Office after leaving Terrace and joined the RAAF. Following training in NSW he received his “wings” and went to England where he flew Halifax bombers. He completed 37 missions over Germany and after a raid on Duisberg his bravery won him the DFC. When the war finished in Europe he volunteered to stay in England and fly wounded and emaciated POWs from Burma and Singapore back to England. This is why he was available to do the conversion course for Liberators during which the accident happened.. [The photo above right shows Pat in the 2nd Pilot seat of a Halifax over Germany in 1944. The photo was taken from Navigation position. “Jus Moss was ‘driving’”]

One of the Australian RAAF squadrons that flew against Germany in WW2 was 466 Squadron. Between December 1942 and May 1945 this squadron flew 3326 sorties against 269 separate targets. 81 aircraft were lost and, all told, 184 Australians were killed. During these years the crews flew the Vickers Wellington, the Handley Page Halifax and the Consolidated B24 Liberator. The squadron mounted its last bombing raid on Anzac Day 1945. It relocated to Bassingbourne, probably the best known American aerodrome and on September 8 1945 they began re-equipping with Liberator heavy bombers and the process was not completed when the squadron was disbanded on October 25 1945.

sustain a power climb (including a take-off) on just three engines, and to remain controllable using just two engines (though it was admitted, only barely!)

The captain of one of the first flights was Flight Lieutenant Pat McNulty, DFC (GT 1935-36)) and the crew consisted of four RAAF personnel and three RAF instructors who had been seconded to 466 Squadron and the plane was the newly arrived and brand-new Liberator KN736. The two RAF Flight Engineers shut down the starboard outer engine as the wheels left the concrete and the remaining engines powered the Liberator into a controlled and safe climb.

The Liberator had a top speed of 300 mph (483 kph) and a range of 3000 miles (4830 kms) so it was capable of being flown from the factory in USA to an aerodrome in the UK. After the war in Europe ended testing flights were organised to introduce and test the reactions of a mixed British and Australian crew to emergency engine failure conditions. A three-engined take-off and landing would be followed by another flight when two engines would be stopped. The Liberator was claimed to be able to

Pleased with the success of the crew and the plane the RAF Pilot Instructor decided that the other part of the training, handling the plane with only two operational engines, might as well be performed before ending the flight for the day with the three-engined landing. One essential fact that was forgotten was that regulations stressed that the exercise was to start at 3000 feet and the plane was now only at 1200 feet. The second engine was shut down and feathered. However the aircraft was losing altitude and because of the two starboard engines being stopped, the pilot had to use full left rudder to maintain straight flight - he was not able to turn right and the ground was rising steadily towards Greensand Ridge. They were then unable to re-start the feathered engines. Fairly quickly the starboard wing stalled, KN736 went into a dive and crashed into the southern boundary of Potton Wood. The plane broke into sections and burst into flames.

The impact killed three outright, including both pilots and a fourth died of burns. The three survivors were all injured. Pat McNulty’s puppy, “Bitser”, was thrown away with one of the injured Australians and her barking attracted rescuers the fifty metres to his side an hour later. Both airman and dog had broken legs.

Many thanks to Pat’s brother, Kevin, who has provided the information and photographs. He visited the crash site at Potton Wood and he said that the words of one of the survivors are appropriate: “I was walking on hallowed ground.”

Earliest Terrace Hat Band

A very few of these still exist as they were phased out after 1922.

Terrace had this badge from 1875 and Nudgee adopted it in 1891. Terrace was navy blue and white as here, while Nudgee was royal blue and white as it still is. After Nudgee refused to change, Br Reidy in 1924 changed Terrace colours to red and black - and Terrace has never regretted it!

Inaugural Mass 2008 at University of Queensland Centre

As last year, the Inaugural Mass was again held at the UQ Centre at the University of Queensland. This is an ideal location as the whole student population, staff, parents of Year 12’s who wish to attend can all be seated comfortably and there is room on the stage area for the Year 12 students, the Terrace Singers and a musical group for the Mass hymns. It was 8 February, 2008.

The Celebrant was Fr Peter Quin SJ who was assisted by Deacon Russ Nelson. The Mass was celebrated in the presence of Mrs Helen Mahoney (College Board Chair), Professor Paul Greenfield (Vice-Chancellor of UQ), Mr Peter Flynn (College Deputy Board Chair) and Ms Pam Betts (Regional Director Edumund Rice Education Australia).

parents. This was followed by the Leadership Pledge led by College Captain, Aaron Previte.

Then followed a commissioning of the new Seniors by first, James Breen 9B, who asked to be taught the traditions of Terrace; Fr Peter asked them to work on building the Christian community into a place of love, forgiveness and healing; Br Gagen asked the Seniors to continue the legacy of the Christian Brothers by their witness to values; and Mr Michael Broad asked them to continue the legacy of Terrace by their witness as gentlemen of faith and learning. The students responded: We will.

Mrs Helen Mahoney, College Board Chair, asked the Staff of Terrace to share in the Gospel call to build a community of care, tolerance and respect for all at Terrace to which they responded: We are so resolved.

She asked the parents of the Senior students if they would, by word and example, support their sons as they sought to model their lives on the Gospel of Jesus. They responded: We are so resolved.

Finally Fr Peter and the parents stood and blessed the Class of 2008.

The seating was arranged so that parents of Senior students were able to pin their sons’ badges on as a sign of the partnership between the College and the home. Led by Luke Moloney (12R)’ the Senior Class of 2008 made their Senior Promise followed by applause. Then the House Captains, College Vice-Captains and College Captain were presented to the College Community and their

Portrait of Br L E Magee provided by GTOBA

The Annual Old Boys’ Mass was celebrated by Fr David Pascoe, the head of St Paul’s Theological Seminary in Brisbane. He brought the story of the Gospel of the day - the curing of the man born blind - to a reality for students and Old Boys as he spoke of the serious inconvenience he suffered at a Cadet Camp when he was a student at Terrace and his glasses were accidently broken and he could barely see.

After the Prayers of Intercession the list of Old Boys whom we know to have died since the last Annual Mass was read. The long list showed two things: Terracians care for their fellows who have died and the College is acquiring a much more complete and accurate list of Past Students.

After refreshments the President of the GTOBA, Mr Paul Howard, introduced Br Magee, as the person to whom the College owed a great debt of gratitude for starting the Terrace House system. Br Magee spoke very feelingly of his time at Terrace - it was only three years. He thanked the Terrace staff, parents and students of the time for the enthusiasm with which they accepted and adopted the changes that the new “system” involved them all in. In many

ways it was a complete change in outlook and the approach to learning. He said that only in 2005 when he was in Africa “That I first read the following lines that I really found a simple way of expressing what the House system at Terrace aimed to do:

There’s a road runs through your heart Walk on it.

It was about walking reflectively along that path through your heart which leads you to be aware of yourself and your feelings and to listen to others and their feelings.

It was about relationships. It was about connections. It was about being brother to each other. It was about the heart.”

Br Magee also thanked his successors, Dr Brendan McManus and Mr Peter Chapman, for their acceptance of the House system. He also wished that the proposed increase in Houses to cope with increased student numbers would be very successful. The portrait was then unveiled. Mr Chapman thanked Br Magee for all he had done and the GTOBA for ensuring that Br Magee’s portrait had been completed.

The Annual General Meeting of the GTOBA followed as the Open Day proceeded.

Internationality

Under the caption “The Aussie Effect”, the Cardinal and White, the Chaminade College monthly newspaper reported this year: “ Beginning with a chance meeting between Mr James Gerker, then Principal of Chaminade and Dr Brendan McManus of a similar school in Australia, the AustraliaChaminade Exchange was conceived. It is now in its tenth year and Chaminade students are more than eager to sign up for this amazing experience.”

Similarly Terrace students are eager to be chosen to attend the St Louis College in Missouri, USA, for six weeks. (A similar exchange is made by one student annually with Archbishop Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.) Thanks to the generosity of the GTOBA and some other groups, about twenty-five Terrace students have had this experience of internationality over the last ten years. Including the House s ystem there have been many ideas passed back and forth between the schools. For instance Chaminade gave Terrace the idea of the Kairos retreat and the bands of the two schools exchanged musicians some years ago.

Old Boys and their partners in Rockhampton had another Annual Get Together Dinner at the Brothers’ Capricornia on Saturday, 10 November 2007.

Mr Peter Chapman gave us an update and overview of all things Terracian. It was also good to see our stalwart and old friend, Dominic Katter.

Unfortunately regulars Morrie Costello, Tom Ferris, David Milburn, Alphonse Schleger and Sean Costello could not attend.

Both Matthew Hasking and Josh O’Keeffe (mentioned above) are members of the 2008 Peer Support Team. These are students from Year 12 at least two years ago who were asked if they were interested in joining the Ministry Team. Out of the affirmative replies, interviews are held to choose appropriate personnel.

On the 8th of September, we, along with eighteen other Terrace students and three teachers left for Japan as a part of the Year 10 Immersion Unit in Term 3. The first week of the trip was spent travelling throughout Japan. We visited places such as Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Tokyo. This was thoroughly enjoyed by all and allowed many of us to see up close all the aspects of Japan we had been hearing about for the past three or more years. However, the homestay for many was the ultimate Japanese culture experience. Even though it may have been a slight ‘culture shock’ at first, it turned out to be the highlight of the Immersion for us and our fellow Terracians.

After the Immersion had ended, we stayed behind in Japan to attend Konan (Terrace’s Sister School) as a part of the two schools’ exchange program. Konan was a fantastic experience as it was very different from Terrace. We also lived with our homestay families for another eight to nine weeks which was great as we were able to get to know them better during that time. With our homestay families we got to travel to places that we weren’t able to see on the Immersion, from the traditional things such as potato harvesting and togei (pottery) to just exploring the cities and trying to make our way through Osaka amidst the ever flowing stream of people without running over them on our bikes.

We both gained much from our time in Japan. We had the opportunity to make

friends, both with our homestay families and the Konan students. We believe this experience has given us a better understanding of differences in societies.

We both would like to thank Terrace and Konan for coordinating this exchange for us and for providing us with the privilege to study in Japan for an extended period of time. Thanks especially to Miss Kirsten Allingham here at Terrace, to Miss Junko Sawabu of Konan and in particular to our homestay families, the Hayashis and the Inoues.

The Scholars’ Medal (1996-2008) The Buchanan Medal (1885-1925)

Mrs Jessie Buchanan was a valiant woman who after marrying a master-butcher, John Buchanan, in 1873 had three sons and three daughters. After John’s untimely death in 1886 she raised the children herself. Two attended Gregory Terrace: one became a doctor, but was killed in the First War where he was a Captain in the Light Horse Ambulance. The second son also went to Sydney University and was later twice Lord Mayor of Brisbane. The third died in infancy.

Each year Mrs Buchanan presented two gold medals to the College; one for the best Senior pass and the other for the best Junior pass; and did this for forty years, 1885-1925. After her husband’s death the medals were presented in his memory. She survived her husband for nearly sixty years and died in 1994 aged 95.

In 1996 a Buchanan Medal from 1899 was borrowed from the son of the recipient and copied in gold-plated sterling silver. Copies of this Buchanan Medal are presented each year to College students who obtain an OP1 pass in the Senior exam the previous year.

The Principal welcomed the Scholars and their parents back to the College. Mr Mike Byrne who delivered the Occasional Address was welcomed by Mrs Julie Quinn, Dean of Studies.

Each of the students who attained an OP score of 1 was presented with a College Scholar’s Medal by Mr Byrne. This has been modelled on the Buchanan Medal awarded for academic distinction in a much earlier period of College history for some forty years.

Maximilian Stephens delivered an inspirational address to the student body looking mainly at the significant efforts of one of his cohort for whom he had great admiration. He highlighted his extreme effort and determination to achieve his personal best. It was a very powerful message to the present College students.

Also celebrated each year is the Senior student who showed considerable improvement in his academic results over his last year at Terrace. Last year’s award was presented to Michael McGahan who achieved an OP of 4. Michael’s improvement was in how he furthered his understanding by asking questions to consolidate his understanding.

We loved them in life, let us not forget them in death........

Reunion of 1946-1957 Group

Celebrate!

Fifty years after the end of Senior, for the class that started in 1946 and moved through Terrace, with some moving out and others joining the class, a celebration was held.

As seen from the photos it was an occasion to remember. Some had not met since school while others and their wives and families have grown older together.

Other Terracians congratulate them and share their joy.

Biology Demonstrations

During Open Day at the College one area interesting visitors was the Biology labs. Right and below are photos of staff and students showing visitors some aspects of their work.

Among other topics, rat dissection and Electro-biology were shown to relatives and other visitors.

Congratulations

An Early GT Swimmer

Here are two pictures of Grantley Lake (GT 1929-31). The first [Above] was taken when he was about Year 9 at the start of a race in the old College Pool, with Br O’Donoghue the timekeeper. His opponent was Brian Howard (GT1930) and these races were common near Carvinals.

The second photo was taken in 1971 and shows Mons Grantley Lake making his final farewell as the Catholic Navy Chaplain where he had served in that capacity since World War 2. He died in 1991.

CIC Swimming Team

Congratulations to the Terrace CIC Swimming team which competed at Chandler on 12 March.

The Terrace primary section is still fairly small and they won the percentage trophy which means that they were best for their numbers! They were placed third in the Purple Division Aggregate Shield.

The Under 10 and Under 11 groups both placed second and the Under 12 group was placed fifth. Well done all!

12 The Terracian - April 2008

A very early Rugby player from Terrace

This comes from “The Sports Referee, Brisbane, Saturday, July 15, 1919”:

[Note: Baptised Austin Sarsfield Ireland Joseph Gralton - which immediately tells us something about his family. “Sarsfield” is a famous Limerick Irish Patriot who was killed in 1693 in the Irish cause, “Ireland” is very clear and “Joseph” sounds more Catholic than Austin. He attended Terrace in 1885. Editor ] “Mr Austin Gralton whose death was notified last Friday was one of the best Rugby Union footballers Queensland has produced and the news of his sudden death [at forty-eight] was a great shock to many of his old companions who had no idea that he was even ill. He was known to every Queensland footballer as “Grally”.

Gralton was a wonderfully keen player and he never knew when he was beaten. Even after his retirement, during the time he acted as selector for Queensland, he was just as keen and always coached the team. Although, no doubt, he made many enemies while acting as selector, Gralton never shirked his Club and was a good friend to many young players and many a distinguished person owes his position to Gralton.

He had many splendid points and it was only those fortunate enough to travel with him that truly appreciated him. He had only one thought in his mind the whole time, and that was to win!

He first commenced playing with the Alhambras, a Junior Club, in 1890-91 and

GREGORY TERRACE AS THEY KNEW IT!

This is a postcard sent in 1913 to the grandfather of one of the present staff. So the photo was probably about 1911-12. Jimmy Flynn (above) captained the Australian Rugby team in 1912 and had been at school at Terrace in 1909. Austin Gralton (above) attended Terrace in 1885 when the buildings were even smaller: College Hall had only one storey and the handball court (left) was only completed in 1908. Notice the top floor of Treacy House is not yet finished and was completed in 1922

then in 1892 joined the Boomerangs, playing continuously with them until he joined the Valley Club in 1899-1900. When the Clubs were joined to electorates he joined the North Brisbane Electorate Football Club in 1901-1903.

He first represented Queensland against NSW in 1895 and then each year 1896-1901. He played against NZ in 1893, 1903 and 1907 and visited NZ as a member of the state team in 1896. He played for the state against England in 1899 and played for Australia against England and NZ.

Gralton was a wonderful defensive player and although he played hard and received many hard knocks he never “squeaked” and when the game was over he forgot everything and was always friends with his opponents.

It will, indeed, be hard to find a Q ueenslander who will represent the state so often and so honourably as did poor old “Grally” who was a life member of the Queensland Rugby Union.”

Son and Mum on the water

On Saturday 20 October 07, Terrace Rowing celebrated the christening of their new craft, which included the introduction of 3 sculls into the Terrace Rowing Fleet. The JARAD SMITH was named after Jarad Smith (GT 1997-01), for his outstanding service to the Terrace Rowing Community over many years as a dedicated and respected coach.

The Brisbane and GPS Rowing Club took delivery of a new double scull on Saturday 17 November, which will be named the GAYLENE SMITH in honour of Gaylene Smith, for her consistent hard work and achievements in her role as Club Secretary.

Both Gaylene and Jarad developed a passion for rowing throughout Jarad’s years at Terrace. Jarad has focussed on his ability to coach and inspire others since his rowing days at the College. His mother Gaylene first rowed in a fundraising event, and has gone on to achieve in her various local and interstate rowing endeavours.

The Smith Family, and their new “editions” on the Brisbane waters, can be proud of their dedicated service and respective commitment to rowing.
