Compton Dundon & Littleton Village Hall **Meadway Hall Happenings** Committee Business The hall committee endeavour to maintain and improve the hall for its users.

We are very proud of the village hall and have applied for the Hallmark Status 1 & 2.

We await the ‘Hall Visitors’ who will come to view the hall and our management of it - policies, finances, secretarial, bookings, minutes etc.

At present the hall committee are looking into: * installing a new heating system, * constructing a barrier to separate the playground and car park and * making the balcony a more useful space.

Sadly, the committee need to report: * the drainpipe near the meeting room has once again been knocked off, possibly caused by footballs or bikes and * dogs are being brought onto the village hall premises.

There is a NO DOGS POLICY and dogs must not be brought on to the field, path, car park or hall premises.

For Sale: 100 black hall chairs. Very useful for summer BBQs. Just £1.00 each.

Compton Dundon Women's Institute Report of Meeting of Compton Dundon WI held on Wednesday, 12th June 2019 The meeting was opened and two apologies were received. Sue then introduced Michael Malaghan who was speaking on Animal Anecdotes or Gone to the Dogs.

Michael began giving us a wonderful selection of humorous stories about the animals in his home and working life. Michael in his working life has written scripts for various children’s TV programmes including cartoon and puppet characters. His tales of incidents with animals in his private life included jackdaws, dogs, cats, and even Eddie the Eagle, a bird scarer which attracted birds of all types instead of deterring them. Incidents with local cows also came into his tales.

Michael has also written several books, two of which he brought with him, “It shouldn’t happen to a Writer” and “The Master Musician’s Secret”, copies of which we were able to purchase.

His talk was enthusiastically applauded by all.

Following this, a wonderful selection of refreshments was available provided by Julie. The meeting continued with the Minutes of the previous meeting being read and highlights of the County News being pointed out including: 1. A walk organised by Walton WI at 2pm on the 29th June, meeting at Sweets Tea Room.

2. Open Gardens at Rodney Stoke & Draycott on the 27th & 28th July from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Information has been received regarding the Tea Party in aid of Breast Cancer Care to be held in July. It was decided that we should hold this fund raising Cream Tea party at our July meeting on 10th July at Meadway Hall, Compton Dundon. (See page 6) For those wishing to come to the meeting to hear our speaker Beverly Squire talking about the Great Wall of China, the meeting starts at 2 p.m.

For those only wishing to come to the Cream Tea, this starts at 3 p.m. A voluntary donation to Breast Cancer Care would be appreciated for this event.

The Competition for “An animal in any medium” was won by Angie, Janet and Pat. The Flower of the month was won by Janet. The 100 Club was also drawn with 3 winners.

Compton Dundon Cricket Club Annual President’s T20 match and BBQ Friday 12th July at 6-00p.m.

The evening will also include the formal opening of our new storage shed (funded by Viridor Credits)

Compton Dundon Gardening Club Compton Dundon Gardening Club On 2nd June, Dave of Midney Gardens gave us a fascinating insight into taking cuttings. Not for him, putting five cuttings carefully round a pot, he believes and showed us that you can put in as many cuttings as the pot will hold. He filled a 1 litre pot with sharp sand which should be damp, and then planted the cuttings down into the sand as far as they could go. It is beneficial to have at least two notches on the stem so doubling the chances of rooting. The stem should be cleaned of all hairy substances and any leaves at the top should be minimal. The pot should be watered well and again the next day, then every other day. Vermiculite can also be used to the measure of two parts to one part of compost.

Green cuttings will root the same year. Cuttings from wood will take longer as will roses, shrubs and conifers. These should be planted in a trench filled with sharp sand and buried up to 30cm. Surround with compost or leaf mould to keep the moisture in place. The members thanked him warmly for a very informative talk.

On 11th June, members visited Milton Lodge Gardens, Wells. In contrast to last year’s visit to Hestercombe, the weather was damp and chilly. The house is owned by the Tudway Quiller family whose great grandfather had the gardens laid out in their present form. The house is situated north of Wells and provides a wonderful view of the Cathedral and Glastonbury Tor. The gardens below were terraced in the early 20th century and now comprises a series of ‘rooms’ at different levels comprising roses and perennials which were in full splendour, especially the roses. We were shown round by the Head Gardener who was full of enthusiasm while describing the different trees and shrubs as well as the flowers.

The owner kindly provided tea and cake in generous quantities after our tour. Thanks to Ally for arranging it.

Compton Dundon Golf Society Report June 2019 Flaming June led us in the drizzle to Farrington Park Golf Club near Bristol, with three old crocks claiming wonky knees and ankles and so hiring buggies to drive the course – Royston in particular thought that this being the second time we had played this course, that the walk round was easier this time. It was then pointed out that he was driving a buggy! Come to think of it, he was driving a buggy the first time as well! Chris Swain, handicapped by his bad leg, tried walking backwards at one point to make it easier, failing to spot a bunker behind him – we’ll leave the next bit to your imagination. Peter was seen dancing round and round a tree somewhat manically – it turned out that his ball was stuck in the tree a few inches off the ground. Simon meanwhile was hacking hopefully at his ball stuck underneath an adjacent tree trying to return it to the fairway – several shots later it flew out into the rough.

Dave Wisniewski decided to take up coaching and gave some very helpful tips to Rob Litston, who proceeded to hit his ball over a hedge and out of bounds – don’t give up the day job, Dave!

Not only did his coaching not go to plan, but Dave told Jim which hole to try for nearest the pin. Jim got really close, but it was the wrong hole.

On the 10th hole, Royston marched towards the green and found a ball, then another and another. Was he excited! These balls are breeding he thought.

Then it was pointed out that the driving range was just behind him and all these balls had cleared the safety (!) netting.

It was a shame that Andy Curtis hadn’t got there earlier. He started the round with a bright fluorescent, green ball – easy to find you would think. At £1 each you save a lot of money because they are so easy to spot. By the end of his round Andy had lost not one, but 11!

Nicky Wisnieski continued her series of trick shots managing to bounce her ball from guttering on the side of the pathway and onto the fairway, followed by a ricochet from a bunker rake onto the green.

Our next outing is on Tuesday July 2nd to The Bristol Golf Club. All welcome. Contact Simon on 01458 445463 if you would like to join us.

BENEFICE SERVICE Meadway Hall 21st July 2019 at 10 a.m.

This service will be led by the Archdeacon of Wells. The Venerable Anne Gell, who has been Archdeacon since 2017, originally trained and practised as a doctor before her ordination. All are welcome to this service in the Village Hall and there will be coffee or tea to follow.

Festival of Angels We are hoping to hold a Festival of Angels in the church this Christmas.

These will be knitted, crocheted or made from lace, felt, or other material as they will need to be fairly light in weight and attached to netting.

Please make any size angel, from any materials you choose to use to help achieve this, such as newspaper, wood, fabric, wool, card board, plastic, metal .

If you choose to give your angel a theme, such as save the planet, police, doctor, teacher, animal that would be great.

We hope a host of angels will descend as the poppies did.

In October we will hold a workshop day to give ideas to anyone who would like to come.

Music for a Late Summer's Evening St Andrew's Church Compton Dundon Sunday 1st September 2019 at 6 p.m.

St Andrew's Church is delighted to welcome back The Intermedii Choral Group who will perform unaccompanied sacred and secular music by Palestrina, Gabrieli, Mendolssohn, Ravel, Cole Porter, Jagger/ Richards and others. In addition, some organ pieces will be played by Andrew Carter on the recently restored church chamber organ.

Intermedii, who are based in Luxembourg and the UK, has sung at many venues and festivals in the UK, France, Luxembourg and Belgium.

Come and enjoy the very varied and entertaining programme which they are kindly bringing to us in St Andrew's Church.
