Back To Normal For 2022

Christmas in Compton Dundon

Started with the famed Big Breakfast, at the end of November, served to 120 people (special thanks to Chris and Sarah for catering), plus a raffle to win beautiful Christmas hampers, and a variety of Christmas stalls to browse for cards, produce and gifts.

For the inaugural Christmas Fair in St Andrew's Church, the church building was filled with an array of Christmas goods whilst the hot mulled cider warmed the shoppers.

In the chancel, children and adults alike enjoyed dressing as one of the Nativity characters (or animals) and appeared in the Bethlehem scene for a photo opportunity.

£770 was raised for St Andrew's at the Big Breakfast and a further £703 at the Christmas Fair.

Feedback: Findings from the Meadway Hall Questionnaire

In September last year the Meadway Hall Trustees launched a 2-month questionnaire to gather feedback from residents of Compton Dundon & Littleton about how they used the Hall and what else they might wish to see there in future. It was circulated within the September Parish Newsletter as well as an online version being available to complete on the Meadway Hall website; it closed at the end of October.

The response was very encouraging with many positive responses from 78 individuals and families (with 17 children) received.

Here are the main findings the Trustees would like to share with you:

Almost all (93%) respondents use the Post Office regularly, about half attend clubs regularly (48%) or village events (52%), and about a third (30%) attend meetings.

There were several responses from working people asking for more events in the evenings, such as exercise activities (yoga / keep fit), as well as asking for more activities for children and young adults.

A number of respondents asked for other events, such as live music, film nights (inside and outside), folk nights, local history / cultural events, and the occasional record fair / book exchange / flea market, and maybe singing / poetry events.

We asked whether people would use a coffee shop – a third (33%) said they would use it regularly and over half (52%) from time-to-time; there were several requests for a small village shop and a fixed bar to improve private and community events.

A tennis court, a bike track for children, and more outdoor fitness equipment were also asked for, as were bicycle racks to discourage car use.

A good proportion (19%) of respondents told us they already do, or would be willing to, volunteer to organise regular activities; a larger number (30%) would be able to help with occasional events; and almost half (43%) indicated they would be willing to help fund raise for new equipment or facilities, should that be necessary.

The Trustees are very grateful for all the responses received, have seen the full detail of responses, and are now discussing which of the suggestions they think may be feasible and affordable. They would very much welcome any further inputs from residents or hall users at the Meadway Hall AGM which will take place on Tuesday 14th March at 7pm in the Hall – all are very welcome to attend.

Compton Dundon & Littleton Support Group on Facebook

(from Dylan Martlew )

Since we set the group up in March 2020 it has grown to have nearly 500 members and is a lively space for information and communication. My experience was asking to borrow a child car seat at 10:30am, having five offers within minutes and driving off with granddaughter at midday. Brilliant.

We have had problems keeping up with approving all the posts so we have changed the way we manage them and set up two new admins to help look after things. The changes mean that posts should go live straight away, so long as they fit a simple set of rules. It does means that some unwanted posts will get through so what we need is community action to spot these posts and flag them up so they can be dealt with. So if you see something that you really don’t think is appropriate, let us know.

The question then is what is appropriate? Big question! We will see what the community does and doesn’t like. As far as business posts go it seems reasonable that anything that benefits the village or its residents should be allowed, in moderation. Local businesses like the Castlebrook, Post Office and Tweenways are obviously in, some of us who run our own small business would seem reasonable provided it’s not too often…. but where is the line? Well, that is down to you. If you like it, like it, if you don’t like it, report it.

Many thanks to Greg Jones for holding the fort for over two years and thanks to Eleanor Whitlam and Sarah Haselwood for stepping in and setting up the new generation!

Onwards and upwards!

Compton Dundon School recently purchased and installed a defibrillator, located outside on the wall to the left of Reception. This brings the number of defibrillators in the village to two. Hoping no-one ever has to use one, but be aware that the area in quite dimly lit should you ever need access to it when it is dark. Along the lines of keeping us and our community safe, Newton Class recently attended an in-school 'St John’s Ambulance First Aid for Pupils' course. This taught the boys how to respond to first aid emergencies, their treatment and procedures and practical demonstrations of these skills. All 4 pupils who attended passed the course and this will hopefully give them confidence should they ever be faced with a first aid emergency. Sharon Love, School Office Manager

James Stallard’s Gingerbread House

James makes something for the children every year at Christmas and for 2022 it was a Castlebrook Inn gingerbread house.

Saturday 21st January saw Compton Dundon put on the international map with our first Repair Café. In Compton Dundon, we saw 11 items to be repaired including, darning of a jumper, sewing of some leggings, tool sharpening and a Maglite torch repair. Despite some of our repairers being poorly we managed to repair most things. But it’s not only about repairing, the Repair Café gives people a chance to socialise without having to travel too far and maybe meet new people who live on your doorstep.

The Repair Café movement was started in the Netherlands and there are presently 2566 ‘cafés’ around the world. This number is growing daily. For more information look here https://www.repaircafe.org/en/ The trend of chucking stuff into landfill is at last shifting and we feel proud to be a part of that. If you would like to volunteer as a repairer please contact Emily on 07969 818991

Next Repair Café will be on Saturday

11th March in the Meadway Hall

Gardening Club

The meeting on 5th December 2022 had it's usual Christmas theme, Ann Hassad showed us how to make a table decoration and provided the bowl and candle. She had an enthusiastic audience though some seemed to think that their piece was going to cover their table, there was so much greenery. A glass or two of mulled wine and mince pies helped the process. When kept in cool conditions, many table pieces lasted over the Christmas season.

It was the AGM and Quiz Night at the meeting on 9th January 2023. Well done to all members for remembering to pay for the annual membership. The cost is the same as last year but will need to be reviewed in the future if our costs keep going up. Please tell your neighbours and friends about us, we need more members to cover this. The Chairperson gave a review of the past year's events and congratulated everyone on the success of the Village Show, which made a small profit. It was disappointing there were no children's entries but we hope that a simplified programme (shown below) will encourage more entries this year.

The Finance report followed and the members were shown the costs required to keep the club going, annual membership of the RHS, the Gold Club (which gives us a free talk, the flower plugs and discounts), Somerset Garden Federation, Liability Insurance and Room Hire before we consider the costs of Guest Speakers.

The election of the 5 members of the Committee followed and were duly reelected. We urgently need more members to join us and hope that you will all consider whether you can spare a couple of hours a month to prepare for the Village Show.

The Quiz followed, our brain cells helped with a glass of prosecco and a piece of pizza in the interval. Questions on such subjects as plants, food, Somerset and general knowledge among others tested all of us. There was a tie between two tables and the prizes of cyclamen were given to the ladies. Thanks to all for taking part.

The talk on 6th February will be ‘Plants for Problem Areas’ by Claire Hart. This will be a very useful meeting as it will provide ideas for areas of the garden which may not have perfect growing conditions.

The talk on 6th March will be ‘Seed to Fork’ by Greg Mortar and the (Continued on page 10)

Compton Dundon Cricket Club

Compton Dundon Colts

Following the success of Dynamos cricket here at Compton Dundon the club are keen to ensure the boys and girls maintain their enthusiasm for the game as they get older. With this in mind we are keen to introduce entry level hard ball cricket by forming an under 12 team to play in the Mid Wessex Cricket League.

The cricket coaching (aimed at developing key cricketing skills) would take place on a Friday evening from 6.00 pm at the Hayes Road ground for 8 weeks between May to July. There would also be a series of matches (played home and away) over the same period with other teams in the league. These may take place on Monday evenings.

The cost of the coaching would be £40 per child and each would receive a branded Compton Dundon CC playing shirt. Match fees will also be payable, further details to follow although we don't expect these to be excessive. The club will also provide bats, pads, helmets etc. although you may of course use your own kit of preferred.

The club will continue to run the Dynamos sessions for new entrants aged 8-11 years rather than join the under 12 team.

The under 12 matches are 8 a side and played in such a way that all children will be involved as much as possible, get to bat etc. with an innings being a maximum16 overs.

We envisage needing a squad of around 10 players, to take account of illness, holidays and so on. To gauge if the formation of a team in the under 12 league is feasible we would be very grateful if you could let me know if your child is keen to be involved?

This is the first step in forming junior teams at all ages as young people move up through the club. We are happy to hear from young people of other ages as we can provide coaching and possibly competitive cricket for all ages.

The Parish Council is concerned about the control of dogs when they are being walked on a footpath across fields containing animals. We are proposing to display signs around the Parish reminding people to keep their animals in a lead and under control especially where animals are grazing.

Walking a dog in the country is not quite the same as a walk in the park!

“The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few” Matthew Chapter 9 verse 37

Dear Friends,

I am excited that this year we will again be engaging with the Diocesan led initiative ‘Everyday Faith’. Throughout this coming month, our Sunday morning sermons will be based on the themes relating to the living out of our faith in our daily lives.

“Everyday Faith is about where and how we encounter God as we go about our lives. Everyday Faith enables the whole people of God to live out the Good News of Jesus confidently in all of life, Sunday to Saturday, 365 days a year.” To read more, please go to the Diocesan website (if you are able to access the internet).

I hope, like me, you will be able to join in, whether online or in other ways.

Sometimes living out our faith in the modern world with so many other voices clamouring for our attention can be a real challenge. As Christians, we are not alone, we can journey together and do be encouraged to sign up, take part and share with Christian brothers and sisters.

The whole essence of everyday faith is that it offers support and encouragement for ordinary people to live out their faith in their ordinary lives whether at the workplace or the WI, the gym or the allotment, or wherever you spend your time, ‘everyday faith’ provides ideas and inspiration on how to be a Christian presence and witness to those you meet.

It might be that you are the only follower of Jesus in your club, work team, family or elsewhere, how can you be salt and light and if not you then who?

There is an old joke about a sign on a vicar’s door which said, ‘here am I Lord, please send someone else!’ In 2023, let’s aim to be a church family who can say, ‘here we are Lord, send us.’

Yours, with my love and prayers, Ana

The Jive Aces in Compton Dundon!

The Jives Aces arrived in Compton Dundon direct from Athens in Greece; next stop Torquay and elsewhere before a tour in America in March.

We were lucky to intercept their whirlwind lifestyle, when on Saturday January 7th they entertained more than 120 people at Meadway Hall.

It was a fundraiser for the St Andrew’s Bell Appeal and more than £3,000 was raised too, with the raffle raising £450.

Sponsor Gerald Doble witnessed a spectacular event with the dance floor full from beginning to end. Thank you Gerald, your support is much appreciated!

Numbers such as ‘When you’re Smiling’ ‘In the Mood’ and ‘Hound Dog’, food provided by Sarah and Chris (thepignicpeople) and the Bar courtesy of Brian and Trevor, kept everyone happy and a thoroughly good time was had by all, as the pictures demonstrate.

Thank you to everyone who made this such a wonderful evening. Fundraising certainly can be fun.

MORE FREE MONEY FOR YOUR CHURCH! – AN ARTICLE ABOUT GIFT AID

A recent survey calculated that charities and churches are losing out on up to £600m a year because people who could gift aid their donation are not doing so. That prompted the obvious question, are you one of those people?

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a government scheme that allows charities and churches like ours to reclaim the tax you have paid on any donations you make, providing you are a UK taxpayer. There is absolutely no cost to you, all you need to do is to sign and return a simple ‘gift aid declaration’ to your Church Treasurer and they do the rest. Then the government gives the church ‘free’ money’!

Some common ‘myths’ about Gift Aid, (taken from https:// www.swiftaid.co.uk/blog/defeating-the-myths-about-gift-aid/)

“It’s just not worth the trouble for small donations.” But tiny amounts matter, remember, in total £600 million in Gift Aid is lost by charities each year.

“Why would I want to tell HMRC more about me? This is just a way for them to keep tabs on me!”

The Gift Aid Declaration form merely confirms that you are a UK taxpayer along with your name and address (information HMRC will already have if you are a UK taxpayer). So unless you don’t pay tax (in which case you are not eligible for Gift Aid anyway) HMRC already knows everything on the Gift Aid Declaration Form and plenty more besides!

“I can’t give Gift Aid because I’m retired.” Even if they have technically stopped work, many pensioners continue to pay tax (for instance on investments or property) and are therefore eligible for Gift Aid if they donate to UK charities.

“I’m frightened of receiving a tax bill for Gift Aid.”

Provided you ensure you never claim more Gift Aid than the amount of tax you pay, this will not happen.

“I don’t want to be committed to further donations.” Gift Aid entirely relates to donations you have already made. This allows a charity to claim back the tax you have paid on the donation thus boosting the income they get by 25% without costing you a penny more. The form in no way entitles charities to take, or even to ask you for additional donations.

”I can’t do Gift Aid because I don’t fill in a Self-Assessment tax form.” Even if you pay tax through other methods, such as PAYE, provided you do pay tax, you can still add Gift Aid to your donations. If you are a higher rate taxpayer, there is an advantage to filling in a self-assessment form, because this is how you can reclaim tax relief on your gross donations at 20%.

In the context of ongoing deficits in our church budgets, increasing the number of church family members who Gift Aid their donations is another way we can raise more income, and at no cost to you.

If you have not gift aided yet and can do so, why not get a form from your Church Treasurer (details elsewhere in the magazine) today?

Elections – Deanery Synod, Wardens, PCC

As we approach our Annual Parochial Church Meetings, there will be the opportunity to stand for elections for various roles. Please prayerfully consider whether this is something for you. We will be looking for new members to serve on our Parochial Church Councils (PCC) and if you’d like to know more about what being on a PCC involves, please talk to one of the PCC members or contact me.

In addition, every three years, we elect deanery synod representatives – we are able to have two from Compton Dundon and this year, elections will be held for representatives to serve for the next three years. Deanery Synod is a place where decisions affecting the local network of Anglican churches are made and there will be significant issues for us to wrestle with over the coming years.

Finally, wardens are elected every year, and if this is something you might consider, please also have a word with me or one of the current wardens.

Listening – a Lenten sermon series

At a recent ministry team meeting we chewed over a little the area of listening and the importance of listening well when alongside others. Some people may have natural gifts in this area, but there are tips and techniques one can learn to be a better listener. During the Sundays in Lent, our sermons will have a focus on listening as we explore what this might mean in a Christian context and what the bible has to teach us. Come and listen!

A reminder that sermons are recorded and can be found on our website should you miss one on Sunday.

Lent Groups

This year I would love to encourage you to join a Lent Group, to meet either in church or in someone’s home for a 6-week period. Lent Groups are a great way of digging deeper into the bible, sharing and praying together and can be a good Lenten practice as we seek to grow closer to God. This year, the studies will be focussed around the area of listening. If you are interested in joining a daytime or evening group, please contact the office so that we can put together groups from across the benefice.

St Andrew’s Bell Appeal

Following on from the successful Jive Aces event we are gearing up for a year of fundraising activities, ideas welcome!

St Andrew’ bells have not been rung but only chimed since the original bell frame became unsafe one hundred years ago. The chiming system has to be repaired now to ensure that our bells are not damaged by the hammers which, have been hitting the bells in the same place since the Ellacombe frame was installed in the 1930s. Two of the bells were cast by the Austen family at their foundry in Compton Dundon in the 1600s. These two bells are of historical importance and are now listed. Rather than just replace the chiming system it was decided to take this once in a lifetime opportunity to do a full restoration, with new bellframe, restored bells with a further sixth bell for full circle ringing and ringing gallery. This will enable the bells to ring out full circle for those important life events, christenings, weddings and funerals which brings us together as families and villagers. We hope you will continue to support this effort, which will ensure this element of our heritage is here for future generations.

Compton Dundon Open Gardens Sunday July 9th - hours t.b.c. The next date for your diary! We hope that whether your garden is large or small you might like to open it to the public as part of this event. It doesn’t have to be perfect! The village has so may different aspects, views, soils and gardeners, there is always something different to see and learn and it would be lovely if you would like to share it as part of this fundraiser. If you don’t feel that is for you we will still need help with providing hospitality at various locations, so offers of help are very welcome. There will also be plant sales at various locations, so start potting up those must have plants you have growing in your garden. Every little bit helps.

Sponsorship

Another way to help and to make your contribution go further is sponsorship. With sponsorship we can commit to larger events like the Jive Aces. With donations of time and money we can go that extra mile. If you would be willing to sponsor an event please let us know. Please get in touch

07949241818,

APCM Dates

The year’s APCM (Annual Parochial Church Meeting) will take place on 18th April at 7 p.m. and should last no longer than an hour. Please put the date in the diary and join us as we look back with thankfulness to the past year as well as reflect on the year to come.
