Grandparents rock on their special day! GRANDPARENTS Day on Sunday 6 November is a chance for everyone to thank grandparents for their love and support and for grandparents to bask in their special day in the sun. Queenslanders will start rocking with their grandparents in many ways – by attending a local event, organising their own special activity, or simply spending time together doing something all the generations can enjoy. Queenslanders are being urged to let grandparents know how much they rock by joining in the Grandparents Day celebrations. The theme of the day this year is ‘Grandparents Rock!’ It will be a fun way to celebrate grandparents and will remind Queenslanders to let their grandparents know how much they mean to them. “From playing with the grandchildren to providing guidance and support to parents, grandparents rock in so many ways,” said Ms Karen Struthers who encouraged Queenslanders to get behind Grandparents Day and to thank the grandparents in their lives. At Sunshine Coast Seniors newspaper we also want to recognise and reward grandparents – see pages 24 and 25 inside this issue for details of how you can win a $100 shopping voucher in our grandparents’ photo competition. Some of the best photos already entered in the competition also feature inside. To find out more about Grandparents Day, visit www.communities.qld.gov.au or phone 1300 135 500.

In recognition of craftsmanship, the focus for 2011 is on items made with pride, handmade as opposed to mass produced, possessions that last the test of time. These are things that a Country Gentleman treasures. These are things that a Movember man treasures. VIEW Club members amongst The Sculptures

GLASSHOUSE Country VIEW Club visited Maroochydore Botanic Garden for morning tea and lunch on Wednesday 5th October. The garden is set amongst 82 hectares of eucalypt and riparian forest with creeks, lagoons, walking tracks, glades, artworks, picnic tables and a myriad of native plants. In 2005 the Garden proudly hosted the Stone International Symposium and over a period of 15 days six international and two Australian sculptures created 13 pieces of art. These sculptures are now displayed within the in-

spiring Bushland Sculpture Garden. Our VIEW Club meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Anyone who would like to join the VIEW Club would be most welcome. CAN it really be Christmas in under two months? Sunshine Coast Council’s annual Christmas Tree Trail will bigger and better than ever and the community is invited to celebrate the official launch of the festive season on Wednesday 23 November at Mooloolaba. Keep your eye on local newspapers for more details as the time draws nearer. These are not your average Christmas trees – they range in size and species – from fabulous Figs to pretty Paperbarks, and each will have a unique set of dazzling decorations. The trail began two years ago when council spoke with Sunshine Coast communities about how they celebrate Christmas and what they’d like to see in their region to mark the occasion. Resoundingly, locals asked for Christmas trees to be displayed in places where everyone could enjoy them. Environmentally friendly Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting features

across all of the trees, in keeping with council’s vision for the Sunshine Coast to be Australia’s most sustainable region – vibrant, green and diverse. And for the first time,

council will use new scan-code technology to enable passersby to download the ‘story behind the tree’ with a simple swipe of their iphones and smart phones.

Scrap super age limits and stamp duty

OLDER Australians have called on government to scrap stamp duty and age limits on the superannuation guarantee at the Tax Forum in Canberra. Currently, employers are not required to pay superannuation towards workers aged over 69, despite an official drive to keep

Australians working longer as the population ages. National Seniors chairman and leading economist Professor Judith Sloan said superannuation age limits were inconsistent with espoused labour market trends. “We’re getting mixed

messages,” she said. “On the issue of super guarantee age limits, it’s time for Government to put their money where their mouth is.” “Employers are being told to value older workers, but just not to the extent that a 70-year-old is granted the same super-

annuation benefits afforded a 30-year-old,” she said. “Seniors aren’t asking for special treatment, we’re asking for the same treatment.” “To allow older workers equal access to the superannuation guarantee is consistent and fair.” The other issue is stamp duty. This tax, which varies from state to state, acts as a disincentive for retirees downsizing to agefriendly accommodation. “National Seniors research reveals that many older Australians are forced to sell up as the family home or garden becomes impossible to maintain,” said Professor Sloan. “Often, those who stay, do so for financial reasons such as stamp duty”. “Those financial pressures are compounding as more of us move into retirement with mortgages”. “Add stamp duty to the equation and downsizing seniors are forced into city fringes or regional areas away from health facilities and social networks built over a lifetime.” Diminishing superannuation returns in a global financial downturn would either force Australians to delay retirement, adding impetus to calls to improve the employment prospects of older workers or it will require government to extend the 2008 drawdown concession on market-linked allocated pension funds. For the record, National Seniors is opposed to extending the GST to unprocessed food and health services which would exacerbate cost of living pressures. However, the GST was not discussed at the Tax Forum. Press release: National Seniors

Noosa U3A Seventy-two players from Sunshine Coast retirement villages contested the annual Lend Lease Inter-village Bowls Day

MORE than 70 lawn bowlers took to the greens of the Buderim Bowls Club on Monday 3 October to contest the annual Lend Lease Inter-village Bowls Day, a tournament held since 2000. All events on the day were mixed men’s and ladies’, with competitors fielded by five Lend Lease retirement villages on the Sunshine Coast: Hibiscus Chancellor Park, Hibiscus Bellflower, Buderim Gardens, Hibiscus Noosa and Hibiscus Nambour. “The brand new synthetic greens of the Buderim Bowls Club were a new experience for everyone but they all seemed to get the hang of it after the first game,” said organiser Bob Bateman.

Bob, who has been playing bowls for 15 years – and is considered a novice by some of his fellow competitors – played on his home team of Hibiscus Chancellor Park, but Hibiscus Bellflower were victorious. Their team of Merv McNeil, Phil Darlingson and Jill McNeil were the overall winners, with Geoff Harry, Max Taylor and Betty Freebody as runners up. In all, nine teams won prize money with the overall winners also taking home the trophy. Next year this fun but fiercely fought day will be organised by Hibiscus Noosa and played in the northern part of the coast.

ON Friday 4 November, Noosa U3A will present Dr Ken Lynn’s History of Science 5. Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz - Their Life and Times 1643-1727 Newton was one of the few men who could be called a scientific genius equally at home with mathematics, physics, astronomy and experimental investigation. This strange man effectively founded physics as a hard-nosed mathematical discipline while pursuing alchemy and biblical interpretation as well as a having a short political career, becoming a driving Master of the Mint and head of the Royal Society. Leibniz was a more cheerful and philosophical man who independent of Newton invented the calculus and was attacked by Newton over precedence. The notation of Leibniz rather than Newton now holds sway but Newton’s view of reality would last until Einstein came along two hundred years later. Flooding in both Queensland and Victoria last summer forced the evacuation of aged care and nursing homes in both Victoria and Queensland. Reports in Brisbane’s Courier-Mail suggest some elderly residents were left without easy access to toilets and showers and had to sleep on inflatable beds. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has also briefed Queensland Cabinet for the coming wet season, saying that the state is likely to experience above average rainfall, high bushfire danger and at least four cyclones. National Seniors Australia CEO Michael O’Neill said more work was needed to

ensure that aged care facilities coped as quickly and smoothly as possible in dealing with emergency evacuations. “We welcome any moves to better protect the elderly,” Mr O’Neill said. “But we need to ensure that that staff in aged care facilities are well trained to carry out evacuations for either the elderly residents or their local communities,” he said. “The federal government could also help these communities by funding the training of elderly residents who are willing and able to help in emergencies, alongside the local SES personnel and emergency services. “The elderly are some of the most vulnerable in our society and need to have first priority at times such as these.” Press release: National Seniors

Come to a Forum: Help shape aged care DO you have a parent or spouse in a nursing home? Are you satisfied with their quality of care? Will you mortgage the family home to the government to pay for a nursing home bed? What of your children’s inheritance? Is help available for you to grow old at home? Should market forces determine what you pay for aged care? These are some of the issues National Seniors will raise at FREE forums around the country as the government moves to reform an aged care system struggling under the weight of demand. The blueprint for this reform is a Productivity Commission report, which since its release in August, has received very little public scrutiny. Join us, have your say, tell us what we’ve missed and actively shape how our most vulnerable older Australians are cared for now and into the future.

The BIDET SHOP® is in the enviable position of having 100% of customers delighted by its products. Michael Brawn from The BIDET SHOP® SUNSHINE COAST

knows this first-hand because he has received client success stories every other day since 2006. He says people are constantly calling him to let him know how happy they are. “People can’t wait to tell me what a difference the toilet seat bidet has made in their lives”, he says. They are just so excited about all aspects of the bidet and are keen to share all the positives. One lady, who installed a bidet in her home, described it as a ‘life-changing’ event. She called me to tell us she “Couldn’t believe a toilet seat would make such a difference to her life”, he says. Michael added, the lady had discovered The BIDET SHOP® by accident when she saw an advertisement 3 years ago in the local newspaper.

So when she read that a bidet seat just replaced her existing toilet seat and could be installed in minutes she felt it was “one of the things in life that was meant to be”, he said. “Her husband also suffers with incontinence and arthritis, and they found that the bidet had made it a lot easier for him to use the bathroom”. Michael says that the full range of bidets can be viewed and demonstrated locally. The combo option with health care raiser and/or arm rails is available with all bidets. SENIORS NEWS Isolated by the digital divide

THE internet would enrich the lives of older Australians but many of them think that using it is all too hard, the latest report released by the National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre has found. There was increasing awareness that the internet could provide the convenience of email, health advice, online shopping, bill-paying, banking and keeping in touch with family, friends, news and events in their community. But the research also showed many were deterred by concerns such as the cost of buying a computer and Internet or broadband connection, a lack of knowledge and skills, confusion about technology, worries about computer security and access to computers – particularly in regional areas. The study “Older Australians and the Internet: Bridging the Digital Divide” was undertaken by Queensland University of Technology researcher Dr Sandra Haukka for National Seniors. “Older people with low internet skills are unable to conduct business or access important services over the web,” said Peter Matwijiw, general manager of policy and research at National Seniors. “They can be isolated from their community and family at a time in their lives when feeling connected is very important,” Matwijiw said. “In short, they are often on the wrong side of ‘the digital divide’.” Bridging that divide was an important national challenge, given the rapidly ageing population, rising health care costs and later retirement ages, the report said. It also called for urgent action to tailor current online technologies to help break down barriers and assist older Australians gain the skills and confidence they need to use the internet. New blood spot test may improve heart disease treatment

Dismal Damsels celebrate

A TEST which uses a single drop of blood could help to monitor patients with cardiovascular disease, according to experts. Developed by scientists at De Montfort University in Leicester, the test can be used to establish how much medication there is present in a patient’s blood. A 5mm-diameter spot of blood placed on a piece of card can show whether a patient is taking three types of drugs - beta blockers, ace inhibitors and statins in the correct way. Research has revealed that up to two-fifths of patients do not take their medication as prescribed, which can result in complications. It is believed that the test could save health services million of dollars in unused medication and hospital re-admissions. More investigators likely for Health Complaints Commission

THE Queensland Government says the Health Quality and Complaints Commission (HQCC) is likely to appoint more investigators. The Courier Mail newspaper has reported that seven full time investigators had to deal with almost 5,000 complaints last financial year. Health Minister Geoff Wilson says the public has a right to expect that complaints will be dealt with as quickly as possible. “Presently they have seven investigators out of 75 staff - 10 per cent of their staff are involved in frontline investigations,” he said. “Their review, I expect, will identify that there will be more front-line investigators appointed as a result of their ongoing review. “They want to make sure that they can bring those times down because the public expect quite rightly that we get as speedy a result from investigation of complaints as possible. “However it is the case - and this is more the exception than the rule - that some investigations can indeed be quite complex.” HQCC head Cheryl Herbert has told ABC Radio’s The World Today program that the commission tries to deal with complaints as quickly as possible but some investigations do take a long time. “Those that do take long are usually very complex they involve multiple interviews, multiple clinical opinions,” she said. “The interviews that happen are off-site - we go to the facilities, we interview people who have been involved in the care.”

SENIORS NEWS First-year nursing students discover the joys of aged care

FIVE University of Sunshine Coast students have gained hands-on experience in an aged care placement program at Immanuel Gardens in Buderim as part of the Bachelor of Nursing degree. Immanuel Gardens Director of Nursing Rae Stokes said the first-year students have kicked many goals during their five week placement. “What stood out about the interns were their manners, their impeccable dress sense and how they approach each task as a professional,” she said. “This placement prepared students for the real world through carrying out a variety of hands-on duties. “It’s opened the students’ eyes to what aged care is really about as many of them haven’t worked in this type of environment before.” The students have enjoyed their time at Immanuel Gardens. Ninderry resident Tess Murphy, 46, said she was really impressed with the level of care provided to residents at Immanuel Gardens. “The staff are really caring and look after the residents really well,” she said. “Aged care nursing is a good job and I like that you get to know the residents and have more of a relationship with them as opposed to a hospital where the turnover is higher.” Mooloolaba resident Rebecca Johnston, 23, said she has learnt fundamental skills about her

fessionals, eating, socialising and mobility so when they get into an acute setting they have

chosen profession. “I’ve learnt a holistic approach that when you look after a person you need to look at all levels of care and not parts of it,” she said. “I’ve been showering, taking care of feeds and learning about medications and wound care.” Landsborough resident Kara Brien, 19, said she loved Immanuel Gardens. “I like the friendly atmosphere, the residents and it is peaceful here,” she said. Immanuel Gardens General Manager Steve Stacey said this is the second cohort of nursing students this year. “I feel pleased to work in partnership with the local university to provide work placement opportunities for students to gain valuable practical experience,” he said. “It is encouraging to see these students who have already shown their en-

thusiasm, commitment and passion for a career in nursing.” University of the Sunshine Coast’s Senior Lecturer in Nursing Eleanor Horton said the Bachelor of Nursing program curriculum emphasises the importance of clinical placements enabling students to establish relationships in a real working environment. “The University of the Sunshine Coast currently has a strong partnership with Immanuel Gardens and appreciates the model of care that the facility enables the students to experience,” she said. “For example, they can experience healthy ageing in a retirement village, in supported accommodation, through to those residents who require the meeting of high care needs.” University of Sunshine

Coast Facilitator for Nursing Gea VaughanJohnson said the relationship between Immanuel Gardens and the nursing industry was vital for driving students’ careers forward. “Forming relationships with people is what nursing is all about,” she said. “Immanuel Gardens has given students the time to explore the things they like doing during their two days of practicum. “They learn about medication, wound care, the role of allied health pro-

gained knowledge and a good bank of skills. “It teaches them compassion, a holistic approach

to care and an understanding of the different lifestyles available to the older person.”

SENIORS NEWS Scams top Queensland consumer complaints

SCAMS have topped the list of complaints to Queensland’s Office of Fair Trading, drawing almost 4000 complaints last financial year. Personal and household goods – such as televisions, white goods and furniture – were in

second place, attracting more than 3500 complaints in 2010-11. Also near the top of the list of most complained about industries were (in order): personal and household services such as hairdressing and white good repairs; consumer credit

providers; real estate agents; and motor vehicle sales. Office of Fair Trading executive director Brian Bauer said consumers had lodged 17,314 complaints about traders in 2010-11, slightly less than the 17,660 complaints of the previous

Page 14 - Sunshine Coast Seniors - November 2011

year. “A total of $4.8 million in redress was achieved for Queensland consumers in 2010-11, and 89 per cent of the 13,623 conciliations undertaken by the Office of Fair Trading resulted in a satisfactory outcome such as a refund, repair or replacement of the goods or services,” Mr Bauer said. He said scams attracted 3839 complaints. “The scams complained about have included money transfer and upfront payment scams, including inheritance scams; computer virus and repair scams; fake lotteries; and investment and advertising scams,” he said. Mr Bauer said he was encouraged to see consumers standing up for themselves on a variety of issues. “Consumers who think they’ve been ripped off or treated unfairly should always try to resolve the matter with the trader involved,” he said. “Most businesses are only too happy to

resolve complaints to retain custom and promote customer loyalty. “However, if consumers are not able to settle their complaint with the business, they can contact the Office of Fair Trading which has staff dedicated to looking into such complaints. “If breaches of the Australian Consumer Law or other fair trading legislation are thought to have occurred, the Office of Fair Trading will investigate the matter.” The Australian Consumer Law, which came into effect on 1 January 2011, is a national law which applies to all sectors of the economy and provides for harsher penalties than previous state-based laws. Breaches of the new law can result in fines of up to $220,000 for an individual and $1.1 million for a corporation. 4 Paws Animal Rescue Pet of the Month Jessica

THIS ten year old little lady is another dog that has been surrendered to 4 Paws due to their owner having to go into care. .Jessica, affectionately called Jetstar by her foster mum is a sweet dog who is best suited to a retired person or couple. She loves a walk and still loves to play she is fit as a flea and in exceptional health for a senior lady. A one dog home is the ideal for Jessica and a better TV buddy you could not find. We have had some poor little dogs come in that have been suffering from terrible neglect, 4 Paws has had them treated and they are now ready for new homes. Two in particular had broken jaws from mouths full of rotten teeth. Another little fellow had about an inch of hair embedded all around his gum-line from chewing at his flea infestation, and it had rotted and infected his gums, how terribly cruel. The good news is their tails are up they are eating well and are very happy just waiting for their forever homes. Companion animals like humans need health checks, so please always consider these things if you are considering adopting. If you want to meet Jessica call Kay on 0438 635 191 or Julie on 0411 144 689 or view our web www.4pawsanimalrescue.org.au All 4 Paws Cats and Dogs are flea and worm free, microchipped, vaccinated and de-sexed which are all covered by an adoption fee. All our needy animals can also be viewed on our website at www.4pawsanimalrescue.org.au You can help support 4 Paws Animal Rescue by becoming a member! Members play a large part in supporting the committee and this contributes to the success of 4 Paws Animal Rescue. As a member of 4 Paws Animal Rescue you will receive our quarterly newsletter informing you of forthcoming events, merchandise and background into what happens to our cats and dogs once re-homed. You may even want to become a volunteer or even a temporary foster carer and look after one of our cats and dogs until a new permanent home can be found, all vet fees are covered; all we ask is that you supply a loving caring home.

U3A Noosa

President Rod Munro thanking Captain Peter Liley for his presentation.

SHIPS that pass in the night! Have you ever watched the large ships slowly wending their way down through the narrow, shallow channel that runs beside our coastline? Have you ever thought about the crew on board and how they manage to sail so close and carefully through any type of weather? Currimundi Probus Club was fortunate to have as our guest speaker Captain Peter Liley, a Marine Pilot who lives here in Caloundra and is the President of the Australian Marine Pilot’s Institute. A Pilot has to board each ship at a given point off Kawana, and take control of the ship to its destination at Fisherman Island or further up river as far as the Brisbane Cruise Terminal at Hamilton. In April last year he was in control of the passenger liner Pacific Dawn, when it lost all propulsion 700 metres from the Gateway Bridge over the Brisbane River. With the help of two tug boats they were able to stop the ship only 70 metres from the bridge. Captain Liley said “that is what we are trained to do”.

SENIORS NEWS Westward Ho to Kenilworth

Pictured are bake off winner Ruth Preston and Club President Cec Ward with Peter Wellington.

MEMBERS of the Australasian Touring Caravan Motorhome and Camping Club descended

on Kenilworth recently for a rally and enjoyed nine day of activities including lawn bowls, tag-

along drives and visiting Mary Valley beauty spots. With plenty of accomplished cooks in their midst the group decided to hold a cooking competition and invited local MP Peter Wellington and his wife Jenny to judge a delicious array of food and join them for morning tea. “The morning tea was great but it was a dreadful task trying to judge the fabulous food on offer, Peter said. “I tasted everything and it was all so delicious I passed it over to Jenny to make the final decision. A mouth-watering almond and lemon gluten free cake made by Ruth Preston of Maroochydore won the coveted first prize and runner up went to West Australia’s Beth Nolan for her savoury pikelets. Peter thanked Club President Cec Ward for choosing Kenilworth for the rally and said he had enjoyed meeting the visitors and hearing their often hilarious travel experiences. “Thank you for coming and pass the message through your organisation about this beautiful part of the country, he said.

SENIORS NEWS Slipper invites nominations for Australia Day Awards

NOMINATIONS are now invited for the 13th annual Fisher Community Australia Day Awards. Member for Fisher Peter Slipper said the awards provide an opportunity for recognition to be given for those volunteers who work hard to make their community a better place to live. “Our dedicated and hard-working residents don’t seek accolades for what they do - they do it for the love of their community - but Australia Day gives us an opportunity to say thanks publicly and to let them know that we do recognise their contributions, which are very much appreciated,” Mr Slipper said. Recipients are recognised for their contributions in the areas of community service, industry and commerce, the arts, sport and recreation, and for their work with seniors’ groups, sporting clubs, youth organisations and the like. “Each year, the Fisher Community Australia Day Awards provide a great opportunity to give public recognition to these individuals and organisations that dedicate themselves to the community,” Mr Slipper said. The annual awards were established by Mr Slipper in 2000, to recognise those in the Electorate of Fisher who give considerable amounts of their own time to make their community a better place to live. The presentations are made at a special ceremony at Lake Kawana Community Centre on Australia Day, January 26. “It’s always an enjoyable event; people are there to show their respect and appreciation for our community workers while also commemorating Australia Day.” Nomination forms for 2012 are available from Mr Slipper’s office, or by phoning 07-5444 4888 or by email at peter.slipper.mp@aph.gov.au.

SPENDING time with grandchildren is one of the most rewarding things we can do. They accept you unconditionally and however much you do for them they will give back in spades. The relationship is special but sadly your grandchildren won’t be young forever. Making memories together is what it’s all about and a photograph can be worth a thousand words. Your photograph could be taken on a trip to the park or the beach, on a shared holiday, an afternoon trip to the playground, or indulging in a shared hobby. In fact, any occasion with grandma and grandpa can be a special one! You could win a $100 shopping voucher as well as having your photo featured in our next edition. To enter the competition post us a photograph of your grandchildren, with their names and ages, and write us a few lines about the photo. Include your name, address and daytime contact phone number with your entry and post it to Sunshine Coast Seniors Grandparents Competition, P O Box 1062, Tewantin Q. 4565. If you want your photograph returned please remember to include a stamped self addressed envelope. The winner will be chosen by lucky draw and entries must reach us by November 17. Time is running out – make sure your chosen photograph is on its way to us soon! Good luck!

SENIORS NEWS How to Feel Young and Live Life to the Fullest AS we grow older, we experience an increasing number of major life changes, including retirement, the loss of loved ones, and the physical changes of ageing. How we handle these changes, as well as regular day-to-day stresses, is the key to aging well. Healthy ageing is about much more than staying physically healthy—it’s about maintaining your sense of purpose and your zest for life. While the specific ingredients of healthy ageing are different for everyone, the common factors are good mental health and the ability to manage stress. Knowing the basic formula for healthy aging will help you live with meaning and joy throughout your senior years. Coping with change is difficult, no matter how old you are. The particular challenge for older adults is the sheer number of changes and transitions—including the loss of friends, family, your career, your health, and even your independence. It’s natural to feel those losses, but if that sense of loss is balanced with positive ingredients, you have a formula for ageing well. Healthy ageing means continually reinventing yourself, finding new things you enjoy, learning to adapt to change, staying physically and socially active, and feeling connected to your community and loved ones. Unfortunately, for many, ageing brings anxiety and fear instead. How will I take care of myself? What if I lose my spouse? What is going to happen to my mind? However, many of these fears stem from myths about ageing that are exaggerated or simply untrue. The truth is that you are stronger and more resilient than you may think. It’s important to build your resilience and find healthy

ways to cope with challenges. This ability will help you make the most of the good times and keep your perspective when times are tough. Focus on the things you’re grateful for. The longer you live, the more you lose. But as you lose people and things, life becomes even more precious. You may have a hard time showing strong emotions but burying your feelings can lead to anger, resentment, and depression. Don’t deny what you’re going through. Find healthy ways to process your feelings, perhaps by talking with a close friend or writing in a journal. Accept the things you can’t change - many things in life are beyond our control. Rather than stressing out over them, focus on the things you can control such as the way you choose to react to problems. Face your limitations with dignity and a healthy dose of humour. Look for the silver lining. When facing major challenges, try to look at them as opportunities for personal growth. If your own poor choices contributed to a stressful situation, reflect on them and learn from your mistakes. Take daily action to deal with life’s challenges. When challenges seem too big to handle, sweeping them under the carpet often appears easier. But ignoring the problem doesn’t make it go away; it allows both the problem and your anxiety to build. Instead, take things one small step at a time. Even a small step can go a long way to boosting your confidence and reminding you that you are not powerless.

Caloundra Family History Research Group Committee for 2011/12

AT the Caloundra Family History Research group’s general meeting, on the 20th October, Esma Rigby was invited to read her Lorrie Barzdo Writers Award entry on “Unusual Occupations”, which was well received.

Members then took part in a Genealogy Discussion, some telling the group of their recent break-throughs and others outlining their method of research. Geoff Kelly, the inaugural winner of the Lorrie Barzdo Writers

Award gave a background on his research for his entry, as did the group’s Librarian Sue Schott in relation to her entry. Dawn Kemp gave a very in-depth instructional talk on the benefits of using the family history

free chat and message board facilities on the internet and the results that have been forthcoming for her. Then, to highlight the importance of conversations with our elders about their lives and their history, Kerry McGrath played a much treasured tape of his, recorded by a beloved relative back in the 1960’s. Many conversations on these subjects continued through afternoon tea, and after the break, Betty Cristaudo gave an informative presentation on This Day in History. The group’s rooms and library are open for research every Saturday and the third Thursday of the month, from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Every other Thursday of the month the rooms are open for the full day, from 9.30am to 4.00pm. Specialist interest groups for UK countries, as well as Ger-

many, convene for a couple of hours each month at various times and members use the meetings to learn new searching techniques, network and assist each other in their research. Members are reminded tickets are still available for the annual Christmas Luncheon which will be held on Wednesday 7th December. All activities conducted by the group, including general meetings with guest speakers (1.30pm to 4pm on the third Thursday each month) are held at the Guide Hut in Arthur Street, Caloundra. THE Sunshine Coast Stamp Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7.15pm at the new location, The CWA Hall, Short Street, Nambour. Australia Post has designated October each year to be ‘Stamp Collecting Month’ and, as always, the stamps issued during October features designs with children in mind, as well as for the young at heart. This year’s subject is consistently the most requested by children when Australia Post undertakes their school visits during Stamp Collecting Month each October and that is ‘Mythical Creatures’. Mythical Creatures comprise the characters on the stamps and include mermaids, trolls, fairys, griffin, unicorn and, of course, dragon. Included in the range of stamps to be issued is a special 3D pack including a pair of 3D glasses to view the effect. These stamps will be available from Post Offices. Our meetings are open to the public, and we invite anyone who has an interest in Stamp Collecting to come along to this meeting. We shall have our usual ‘Show and Tell’ segment, where members and visitors, can show an unusual item and give some background to it. Also we have a ‘Question Time’, where anyone present can ask questions and the whole group can see if an answer can be found. We will also have our ‘Exchange Books’ available from 6.15pm so that members and visitors can buy and sell stamps for their collection, with the actual formal meeting starting at 7.15pm. Free entry and free supper. Further information can be obtained by phoning Max Lennox on 5448 6565.

THE SUN IS YET TO SET ON SOLAR REBATES! SPECIALS R E B M E V O N s last! - While stock JAPAN’S Tokai University won the 3,000-kilometre (1,860-mile) World Solar Challenge car race through Australia’s red centre in a tight contest marred by wildfires and an explosion. Team Tokai crossed the finish line in Adelaide on Thursday afternoon 20 October to claim back-to-back victories in the event, last held in 2009. They narrowly beat the Netherlands’ Nuon Solar in the race from Darwin. Organisers said it was one of the closest finishes in the contest’s 11-race history since 1987, with less than 30 kilometres separating first and second

place. The Japanese crew had dedicated their race to the reconstruction of their tsunami-stricken nation and its energy future following the related nuclear power plant crisis. The dramatic contest saw Team Solar Philippines sidelined with a battery explosion which caused its car to ignite. Earlier in the week bush fires swept through central Australia, forcing the entire race to a halt. The cars were allowed to store a small amount of energy, but the majority of their power had to come from the sun and the vehicle’s kinetic forces.

Saving with SOLAR Solar – an investment for the future

2011 World Solar Challenge

A QUALITY 1.5kW system (normally 8 panels) installed on a normal pitched roof facing North will generate an average of 6.3kWh of electricity per day – you can expect to generate more power on sunny days and less on cloudy days. Installing a system on a roof that does not face north or is shaded by nearby trees or structures will reduce the amount of power produced and therefore affect the financial return from the system. A reputable installer will check your home for any shade issues and advise you accordingly. When your solar power system is generating power during the day your home will consume the power first and any excess will be exported back to the power grid. You will be paid a premium rate for the exported power and this is known as a net feed in tariff. Queenslanders benefit from the most generous feed in tariff in Australia with the Queensland solar bonus scheme paying 44cents for every kWh exported to the power grid (Some electricity retailers currently offer higher payments AGL (52cents) and Origin (50cents) are two examples). In order to maximise the power exported to the grid you should, where possible, minimise use of power during the day. Simple things like washing clothes early in the morning and not using the dishwasher until the evening can make a significant difference to the amount of power exported. The average homeowner can expect to earn between $450 and $900 per year from a 1.5kW solar power system. Larger systems will give a higher return however some seniors who receive a centrelink pension should seek advice before installing these as the income generating could affect pension payments. Back in 1982 the first trans-continental crossing by a solar-powered car was completed by Hans Tholstrup and Larry Perkins when they drove ‘The Quiet Achiever’ from Perth to Sydney. They had no overseas technology to draw on, no plans to follow, no previous mistakes to look at or learn from, yet in eight months they designed and built a whole new machine that ran for over 4000 kilometres with only minor problems - some broken wheel spokes and a number of punctures. They managed the trip in 20 days—10 days faster than the first petrol-powered car to do so. Tholstrup is the founder of the “World Solar Challenge” in Australia, considered the world championship of solar car racing. Between 16 and 23 October this year, engineers and inventors from around the world will be attempting to win this prestigious challenge. The teams will depart from Darwin aiming to be the first to arrive in Adelaide, some 3000km to the south. Saving with SOLAR Here’s a good yarn! IT’S a sad story with a happy twist. Blue penguins in New Zealand have been soaked with oil after a container ship ran aground near the east coast of the country’s North Island in October. New Zealand’s Environment Minister Nick Smith has described the oil spill as the nation’s “most significant maritime environmental disaster.” In their oil-soaked state, the birds shouldn’t preen themselves

because their feathers are contaminated. They also need help staying warm before and after rescue workers do what they can to clean them up. So Skeinz, a knitting shop in Napier, New

Zealand, put out a call for knitters to make little sweaters for penguins in need. And knitters around the world have responded big-time. One blog post from the folks at Skeinz.com ran under the headline “It’s raining

jumpers.” Another ran with the headline “We have Critical Mass” — but Skeinz is still encouraging determined knitters to send their handiwork along to “keep stocks available for the Wildlife Rescue

Team to draw from if required.” This isn’t the first time that penguins have been outfitted with sweet little sweaters. The idea has been used in South Africa, Tasmania and the USA.

Saving with SOLAR Harnessing the desert sun

DESERTEC is a concept proposed by the Desertec Foundation for making use of solar energy and wind energy in the deserts worldwide. The non-profit Foundation was established in January 2009 and the founding members of

Desertec are the German Association of the Club of Rome, members of an international network of scientists as well as committed private individuals. Their mission is the fast global implementation of the Desertec concept to ensure the earth will be

able to support 10 billion people in 2050. Australia has huge resources of solar, geothermal, wind and wave energy. Properly harnessed, they could power the country. Over time, they could create surplus clean energy for export.

A latticework of solar, geothermal, wind and wave energy plants spread around Australia could satisfy the nation’s energy needs If Australia grasps the challenge, it could become a 21st Century “Clean Energy Super-

EVEN with significant over-estimation of the cost of renewable energy, a new report by the Energy Users Association of Australia (EUAA) still shows the cost has been modest, according to the Clean Energy Council. Clean Energy Council Chief Executive Matthew Warren said the cost of solar for example was now half what it was in the report. “The EUAA report contains many positives about renewable energy and shows that Australia’s investment in renewable energy had been prudent,” Mr Warren said. “The report finds that renewable energy has been affordable, adding 2 per cent to electricity bills in 2010 and costing households a few cents a week all up. The cost of dealing with climate change is going to be more than business as usual, but so far renewable energy has been a pretty good deal for a clean and safe future. “Renewable energy is necessary if we are going to avoid using technologies such as nuclear power in Australia. That’s why it has been backed by all major parties for more than a decade and enjoys the support of nine out of every 10 Australians,” he

said.Australia’s policies for promoting renewable energy are similar to those of most of our major trading partners. The report acknowledges that Australia’s policies for promoting renewable energy are “...by comparison with the approach adopted in other countries, not unusual”. Mr Warren said accelerated investment in clean energy technologies was important right now because they had to overcome a head start of more than half a century of investment and development of their rivals and will be needed by energy markets at scale in the near future. “Australia is in still in the early years of building a new clean energy industry and transforming the way we generate and use electricity. What is remarkable is how quickly the cost of clean energy is falling and new technologies are arriving to market, and we’ve only just started. “The reality of climate change solutions is that they will cost more, but so far renewable energy has been a great investment and is already beginning to deliver jobs and investment in regional Australia.” Source: www.cleanenergy council.org.au

Saving with SOLAR Sundale strives to ensure a sustainable future THE Sundale organisation works under the admirable principle that “we have the responsibility to ensure that we give the world back to our children as they need it to be”. Thus the Management of Sundale headed by CEO Glenn Bunney are strong environmental advocates, and work to balance this while providing an exceptional lifestyle that meets the needs of older Australians. They acknowledge the responsibility they have with such large facilities to ensure ongoing sustainable use of our natural resources, and accept the need to minimise or eliminate environmental impact by continual improved practices and actions. To this end they have created the “Sundale Green” Program. It is designed to be constantly seeking better and more environmentally friendly ways in which Sundale can operate; from the use of more environmentally friendly paper and recycling and reusing as much material as possible, to energy efficient building practices which incorporate the use of alternative

power sources such as solar panels and solar hot water systems. They are also using water capture, and reuse progressively onsite. All future developments will incorporate a specific sustainability analysis, and there is an exciting one currently underway on their new site at 25 Doolan St Nambour, which is seeing 44 solar hot water systems and a 30kw solar panel system installed onto the accommodation buildings. Even more interesting is that this project is focused on providing affordable housing in Nambour. The project, which is being jointly managed by Premier Solar Qld and Kevin Covey from Covey Associates Engineers, will at completion have a 30KW Sanyo HIT (235W) Solar Power panel system in place together with 44 Conergy Solar Hot Water units. This is a current photo of the impressive array, together with some of the hot water systems. Completion is expected to be by April/ May 2011. Hervey Bay to have first community-owned solar farm

CONSTRUCTION is set to begin on Queensland’s first community-owned solar farm project in Hervey Bay as well as installation of solar power at the local public hospital. Queensland solar company Ingenero has been awarded the contract to build the 396 kilowatt solar farm on Hebblewhite Road, Hervey Bay, as part of Wide Bay Water Corporation’s operations. Queensland Health has also selected international engineering firm ABB Australia as the preferred contractor to install a $1.3 million 266 kilowatt solar panel system at the Hervey Bay Hospital. The Fraser Coast Community Solar Farm will comprise 1,584 individual solar panels covering approximately 2,600 metres squared. It will generate approximately 630 megawatt hours of energy annually enough to power approximately 100 homes - and save around 600 tonnes of carbon emissions every year. Solar energy generated will help offset the energy use of Wide Bay Water Corporation’s operations. At Hervey Bay Hospital, installation of the 266kW solar panel system is expected to commence during November, pending completion of contractual arrangements. The solar panel system will generate approximately 385 megawatt hours of energy each year, saving the hospital around $20,000 per year on electricity costs. It will also help to reduce the hospital’s carbon emissions by 400 tonnes a year. An interactive web-kiosk and large screen television will also be installed in the hospital’s foyer as an education tool for visitors.

Planning body warns of power shortages

AUSTRALIA’S peak infrastructure planning body, Infrastructure Australia, has warned of threats to power supplies in the resource states and major capital cities unless investment certainty is assured to the renewable energy sector. As the Coalition warns businesses to stay away from the government’s $10 billion Green Energy Fund, Infrastructure Australia national coordinator Michael Deegan said the renewable sector needed to know what rules the would be operating under into the future. “Investors want to be certain about what the operating environment is in which they are seeking to invest in that energy space,” Mr Deegan told a Senate committee hearing today. “Without that investment there will be strains in certain parts of Australia on the grid ... there is a big demand for power in Western Australia and northern QLD and of course in our cities.” The renewable energy industry has criticised the opposition’s threats to dismantle the Green Energy Fund in government and tear up future-dated emissions permits issued under Labor’s carbon pricing scheme. SENIORS NEWS World’s oceans in ‘shocking’ decline THE oceans are in a worse state than previously suspected, according to an expert panel of scientists. In a recent report, they warn that ocean life is “at high risk of entering a phase of extinction of marine species unprecedented in human history”. They conclude that issues such as over-fishing, pollution and climate change are acting together in ways that have not previously been

recognised. The impacts, they say, are already affecting humanity. The panel was convened by the International Programme on the State of the Ocean (IPSO), and brought together experts from different disciplines, including coral reef ecologists, toxicologists, and fisheries scientists. “The findings are shocking,” said Alex Rogers, IPSO’s scientific director and professor of conser-

vation biology at Oxford University. “As we considered the cumulative effect of what humankind does to the oceans, the implications became far worse than we had individually realised. “Almost right across the board we’re seeing changes that are happening faster than we’d thought, or in ways that we didn’t expect to see for hundreds of years.” These “accelerated” changes include melting of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, sea level rise, and release of methane trapped in the sea bed. Some species are already fished way beyond their limits - and may also be affected by other threats. But more worrying than this, the team noted, are the ways in which different issues act synergistically to increase threats to marine life. Some pollutants, for example, stick to the surfaces of tiny plastic particles that are now found in the ocean bed. This increases the amounts of these pollutants that are consumed by bottom-feeding fish. “What we’re seeing at the moment is unprecedented in the fossil record - the environmental changes

are much more rapid,” Professor Rogers told BBC News. The report also notes that previous mass extinction events have been associated with trends being observed now - disturbances of the carbon cycle, and acidification and hypoxia (depletion of oxygen) of seawater. Levels of CO2 being absorbed by the oceans are already far greater than during the great extinction of marine species 55 million years ago (during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum), it concludes. The report is due to be published in 2012. In the long run, greenhouse gas emissions must be cut to conserve ocean life, the report concludes. “We have to bring down CO2 emissions to zero within about 20 years,” Professor HoeghGuldberg told BBC News. “If we don’t do that, we’re going to see steady acidification of the seas, heat events that are wiping out things like kelp forests and coral reefs, and we’ll see a very different ocean.” The time to protect the blue heart of our planet is now. Law, Finance & YOU Illegally accessing your super early can cost you more than you think DURING difficult financial times it might be tempting to access your superannuation savings early. However unless you meet strict conditions it is illegal and can cost you more than you think. The ATO is concerned about the number of illegal schemes being promoted that offer people access to their super savings early. People who offer easy access to your superannuation, usually for a substantial fee, may not be telling you the whole

story and should not be trusted. Promoters of these schemes typically take advantage of people with a limited understanding of how super works and charge large fees or commissions in order to gain access to your super and will say you can access your super earlier than you are entitled to. These schemes are illegal and you could face penalties as well as jail time long after your money is spent. You may also find yourself the victim of identity

fraud where promoters steal a person’s identity and their superannuation benefits. These thefts can go un-noticed for some time and cause long term problems for the individual in obtaining finance in the future. If you have entered into an arrangement that sounds similar to these schemes it’s important to contact the ATO as soon as possible. Talking to us voluntarily means you may be entitled to a reduction in any penalties that may apply and we might be able to protect

your identity from being used in other illegal activities. Last financial year the ATO identified over 1,280 people involved with illegal schemes to access super early and assessed them for an additional $9.4 million in tax and penalties. The Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission have successfully prosecuted four promoters over the past 12 months who received jail sentences.

It’s important to think carefully before entering into arrangements that offer easy access to your superannuation benefits. In addition to paying excessive fees or commissions (sometimes in excess of 30% of your super balance) you could be taxed at rates as high as 46.5%. You may access your su-

per early if you are experiencing financial hardship or have strong compassionate reasons, talk directly to your super fund and they will advise you what to do next. If your circumstances allow you to legally access your superannuation benefits this will usually be free or cost a nominal fee and you do not need

to pay any third party to help you. If you have been approached by a scheme promoter to access your super early, or have information about people making such an offer, call the ATO on 13 10 20. For more information about these schemes visit w w w. a t o . g o v. a u / superschemes.

Why has the AUD fallen recently?

THE AUD has recently fallen below 95cUS which is the currency’s lowest level since September last year. The level of a currency is often impacted by a vast array of information, and the latest movements in our currency are no different with a range of issues including: Growth concerns in China impacting demand for Australian exports; ongoing European debt issues, and, a general sense of risk aversion that is boosting demand for so called safe haven currencies like the USD. Trying to predict exactly where the AUD is headed right now is very difficult. While it’s probably fair to say it’s closer to what would be considered normal levels now rather than when it was in the 1.05-1.10 USD range, it could definitely rise and fall again. The value of the AUD fluctuates in a similar way to how sharemarkets perform. The AUD is a “risk on” currency, so when markets are confident and buying riskier assets, it rises. And conversely when market confidence is low, the AUD is sold and can fall. While a lower AUD isn’t great if you’re planning an overseas holiday or shopping online, it does improve the attractiveness of certain Australian companies who receive a portion of their income overseas like One Steel, Billabong or CSL. It’s hard to exactly determine what the effect of Greece defaulting will have on share markets. However, there are a number of factors to keep in mind. The market has known for a long time now that Greece has a high probability of defaulting and therefore has,

to a large extent, factored this in. While there is no guarantee that the market won’t experience more volatility should Greece actually default, some of the impact on global markets has already occurred. Also, there are other countries in Europe like Germany and France who can actually absorb Greece’s debt an help soften the impact a Greece default may have. While interest rates on term deposits may seem attractive at the moment, it’s important to be wary that current market conditions may lead to scenarios where the interest rate could significantly fall, such as a slowing of economic growth or a period of stagnation. On top of a rising inflation rate, this could mean you are effectively losing real wealth in the long run. The share market has always provided investors with healthy returns over medium to long-term periods and this view hasn’t changed. However, it’s important to be realistic with your time frames and goals because while markets will inevitable recover at some point, it’s important to have a diversified portfolio at times like this. ENCOURAGING children to exercise and eat enough calcium will be at the heart of new guidelines designed to curb Australia’s growing osteoporosis problem. Health experts have met in Sydney to finalise a series of wide-ranging recommendations on how to build strong bones to prevent the debilitating bone condition. The guidelines, the first of their kind in the world, include recommendations on how much calcium, vitamin D and weight-bearing

exercise is needed to keep bones strong and prevent fractures. An estimated one million Australians have osteoporosis, while another 5.4 million have low bone density. “Just 10 per cent higher peak bone mass can delay the development of osteoporosis by 13 years and reduce the risk of fracture by 50 per cent,”4, 5 said Professor Peter Ebeling, Medical Director of Osteoporosis Australia. “Once finalised, the recommendations will be widely distributed by Osteoporosis Australia, to GPs, allied health professionals and the community.” Prof Ebeling says these recommendations aim to create consistency on calcium and vitamin D requirements.

“We know from the National Nutrition Survey that many adults, including women and older Australians, do not get adequate daily calcium.” “Despite living in a sundrenched country, many Aussies do not receive adequate vitamin D to ensure bone health. “While over-exposure to sun can have damaging effects, people also need to understand lack of sunlight can be just as dangerous for human health. “A particular study of women living in southeast Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania found that 40 per cent, 37 per cent and 67 per cent of respondents in the respective states experienced vitamin D insufficiencies during winter and spring.”

“Combining vitamin D and adequate calcium intake can significantly reduce fracture rates in a cost-effective manner, particularly for those over 50 years of age who are at increased risk of osteoporosis,” said Prof Ebeling. “Older adults and individuals with osteoporosis or osteopaenia should engage in a combination of muscle strengthening, weight-bearing exercises within a safe environment to avoid falls,” said Professor Robin Daly, Chair of Exercise and Ageing, Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition Research (CPAN), Deakin University, Melbourne. New Prostate Cancer Support Group for Sunshine Coast A NEW prostate cancer support group is being established at Beerwah to service the southern end of the Sunshine Coast and North Morton regions.

PROFESSIONAL

HEALTH DIRECTORY

This support group is being formed to support all those who can be seen by the Glass House Mountains. An awareness evening held at Beerwah on 22 September was attended by 40 men and their partners who voted to start the group, to be known as the Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer Support Group. Organiser Mr Bob McLean, said the Group is being sponsored by the Glasshouse Country Menshed Inc. the group is also strongly supported by Beerwah Lions, the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Moun-

tains, and the long established Sunshine Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group. Co-convenor of the Sunshine Coast Group, Rob Tonge, who attended the Beerwah gathering, said that with the high population growth in the southern area of the region and the north Morton region, a second support organisation was needed. The Sunshine Coast Group attracts 70 – 80 men and their partners at Group monthly meetings, with increasing enquiries from the Glasshouse, Blackall Range and

north Morton area. Bob McLean said latest figures show that 20,000 men are now diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, and with the increased publicity being given to this type of cancer, there is growing demand for information and support. An organising committee has been formed to establish and manage the Glasshouse Country Support Group. “Your support may be for you, your family or another Queenslander” Bob said. For further information contact Bob McLean, phone 0427 606 240.

Masters swimmers can thank a dedicated coach

Kawana Aquatic Centre. Master swimmers (centre), Proud coach Bev Cronshaw, Left, Cecily Shanahan, Right, Val Sheehan

THERE are some amongst us who just love to embrace and give back to the community. Bev Cronshaw is one such person. As a voluntary swimming coach she gives hours of her time teaching senior swimming at Kawana Aquatic Centre, Sportsmans Parade, in Kawana. Bev has been teaching seniors to swim, free of charge, for over 12 years and is bursting with pride at the achievements of her swimmers. In her group are two Master Swimmers who began as non-swimmers, but are now Gold Medal winners. The group has travelled to Hervey Bay, Bundaberg, Noosa, Morayfield and

Toowoomba to compete in the Short Course Carnivals and their results have been astounding, as the swimmers have taken home Gold and Silver medals at every Carnival. In fact, all of Bev’s dedicated Social Seniors Swim Group have become excellent swimmers and are extremely fit and healthy. Classes are open to anyone over 50 years who wish to learn to swim, or improve their fitness and stroking. Classes are from 7.30am to 9.00am on Monday and Friday and Aquaswim is on Wednesday 7.30am to 9.00am. Contact Bev on 5476 6476 and become part of this inspiring bunch of seniors.

When successful Brisbane businessman Phil approached what he thought would be his golden years, Parkinsons disease grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and shook its way into his life. Shaking, falling through loss of balance and depression were the bi-products of this insidious degenerative disease. A broken wrist and cracked ribs were amongst the extensive list of injuries. Perhaps the worst part for Phil to cope with was his speech.” It made normal conversation almost impossible”. Phil said. “Also the fact I would often ‘freeze’ and could not move momentarily, made everyday tasks so difficult. Now thanks to a range of all-natural products Phil is “back”. Back walking steadily, speaking more clearly and has regained his trademark ‘life-spark’. Getting my health back has been the greatest gift of my life. Now I just want to share the good news with everyone who has serious health challenges.

HOLIDAY & Leisure Gubbio in Umbria GUBBIO had been on my “list of places” for ages. But as I don’t drive in Italy and as Gubbio is not on the rail line I have been hesitant in taking the challenge of getting there. As it turns out it is certainly worth the effort. My previous destination was Bergamo in the North. So, I left Bergamo, (funicular and bus to the railway station) and took a train to Milan, train to

Ancona on the Adriatic Coast, another train to Fossata, then bus to Gubbio. I had planned this journey to arrive in Gubbio in the late afternoon, but alas I missed a connection and by the time I did get there it was dark. Not so very late but dark all the same. I had an idea in which direction the hotel was, I went to a bar to check on directions. Thankfully

the only customer offered to take my case and me UP Up to the Hotel Relais Ducale. It was certainly worth the effort. This hotel is in the heart of the city. Established from the former Medieval and Renaissance guest quarters of the Duke Montefeltro’s Palace. The Mencarelli family have three hotels in Gubbio as well as the Taverna del Lupo, where

I had my meals each night. The restaurant is a short walk from the hotel. While during the day, there are public lifts to various levels of the town, after dinner I had to walk up 154 steps back to the hotel. All worth it, my room was lovely, as were the couple of outdoor sitting areas. And the food at Taverna del Lupo was also superb. I really enjoyed the pasta with the shavings of local white truffles. Isn’t it amazing that one can really taste the difference of freshly made pasta. It is sometimes a little off putting eating alone in a restaurant, but I was made to feel very comfortable. On my way out after the first night, I said “I’ll see you tomorrow night,” and the following night there was MY table with the reserved sign on it. As in all Italian towns there are several churches. The most central in Gubbio is the Chiesa di San Francesco, for it was in Gubbio that it is said Saint Frances tamed the wolf. It is also said that in Gubbio Frances was given the robe that was to become the habit of all Franciscans. I went to several of the churches as I wondered around the town and as is usually the way, they were all different. Gubbio was founded by the Umbrians around the third or forth century BC, later passing to the Etruscans. Seven bronze tablets were found in a field in the 15th c, they are a sample of the Umbrian script written between the 4th and 2nd century BC. I was able to see these in the museum. Later the Romans came and the remains of the Roman theatre are on the edge of town. My hotel with its many levels spilt down to the Piazza Grande, where the Palazzo Consoli towers over the piazza and houses the museum and where I climbed to the high tower with the wonderful view over the

rooves of Gubbio and down to the Piazza Quaranta Martiri. This central piazza was named after the forty innocent citizens murdered by the Nazis in 1944 as a reprisal for partisan attacks in the surrounding hills. The Piazza Grande also leads to the Duomo, which was behind and above my hotel. I really enjoyed my stay in Gubbio, chatting to locals about the filming of

the series Don Matteo (that was shown here on SBS). I wandered the tiny streets, browsed in the charming ceramic shops that were the economic source in the Middle ages. After four nights it was time to leave. I made my departure simpler than my arrival, a taxi to the station (25 Euros) and the train to Rome for the weekend of the Canonisation of St Mary MacKillop.

CLASSIC International Cruises will offer its eighth successive and longest ever season in Australia this summer with the return of the line’s stylish flagship, Athena. You will find attentive, old-fashioned service and first-class cuisine onboard Athena as you experience cruising as it was meant to be, traditional cruising on a real ocean liner. Athena is smaller than most cruise ships today carrying just 580 discerning guests, but therein lays her appeal. She is easy to get around and boasts a special warmth and charming ambience – an authentic home-away-from-home with a rewarding camaraderie that only smaller vessels can provide. Named after the Greek goddess of wisdom and originally a transatlantic liner, Athena was completely rebuilt as a cruise ship in 1994 and refurbished in 2005. The eight-deck ship features a wrap-around promenade deck, many traditional wooden deck chairs, a pool, fitness centre and sauna.

You will never be short on places to dine and relax with five bars and lounges, a nightclub and showlounge, casino, library, boutiques, cinema, internet café plus formal and casual restaurants. Athena’s 276 spacious cabins all feature a shower and bathtub, a luxury normally found only in suites on the latest superliners around the world, plus, all 43 suites, including eight balcony cabins, have jacuzzi baths. Cruise onboard Athena to Asia, Africa and Europe with fares from only $2,135pp for an 11-night fly, cruise and stay package from Brisbane. Supplements for solo travellers in selected cabins are as low as 25 per cent, instead of double and Classic International Cruises is also one of the few cruise lines to allow single travellers to share cabins to lower the fare. To get yourself onboard, contact your local Travellers Choice travel agent or visit http:// www.classicintcruises.com/.

HOLIDAY & Leisure Be whisked away by RACQ Travel

LET RACQ Travel whisk you away on a 15-day tour of Europe – Amsterdam to Budapest RACQ Travel’s office in Maroochydore can help you experience the wonders of the European river system, which is the glorious stretch of water from Amsterdam to Budapest. Covering five countries in 15 days on board a luxury Aria class ship, the Magnificent Europe cruise is the most popular option for travellers. As you leave Amsterdam and float down the Rhine River through Germany,

you pass lush fields, towering mountains and medieval ruins to Andernach. A coach from Cologne can take you to 2000-year-old Koblenz, host city for the 2011 Federal Horticulture Show. Back on board, cruise the Main River, enjoying excursions to medieval Rothenburg on the Romantic Road, overlooking the Tauber River. Saunter along the Main-Danube Canal, perhaps visit a beer house in Bamburg before reaching the famous Blue Danube and one of

Germany’s best-preserved medieval cities, Regensburg. Borrow one of the ship’s bikes and pedal the cobbled streets. On reaching Passau, enjoy a choice of three tours, including a Sound of Music tour of Salzburg, a coach trip into the Czech Republic or a cathedral visit before cruising into Austria. Cruise through the Strudengau region, visit monasteries, take a guided bike ride along the banks of the Danube or take it easy on board your river ship to the castle ruins where Richard the

Lionheart was imprisoned in 1192. Then cruise to Weissenkirchen and sample wines from the Wachau Valley. In Vienna, you can again choose from a number of tours. On leaving the Austrian capital, cross the border into Slovakia and disembark in Bratislava. You may choose to discover Slovakia’s Communist past or rest in anticipation of an evening music performance on your ship. Still on the Danube, arrive in romantic Budapest. Visit the Hungarian State Opera House, enjoy champagne and a private opera recital before enjoying a farewell dinner on board in a twilight tour of the Hungarian capital. First Aid for burns and scalds THE following information comes from Senior and Safer – Practical tips for a safer home, a free booklet issued by the Dept of Community Safety. For details on all community programs and initiatives, phone 1300 369 003 or go to www.emergency.qld.gov.au. First aid for burns and scalds: Contact with any excessive heat source may lead to a burn or scald. Prompt first aid will help the healing process and assist in a full recovery. Check these safety tips: cool the affected area immediately with cold running water from a tap or shower and continue for at least 20 minutes; do not remove any clothing that is sticking to the skin or wound at the burn site but do remove

any rings, watches or other jewellery as quickly as possible due to likely swelling of the affected area; after cooling the injured area, apply a sterile nonstick dressing; if the burn is larger than the palm of the hand, phone triple zero (000). Remember: Do not apply ice directly to the burn; cool the burn area only with water for 20 minutes; do not break blisters or remove peeled skin; do not try to remove any clothing that is stuck to a burn; do not apply cream, ointments, lotions or gels to a burn injury; elevate burned limbs where possible; maintain the injured person’s body temperature; rest and reassure the injured person; monitor breathing until medical help arrives.

Asian honey bees threaten our food sources L-R Joan Morrison, Lorraine Peterson, Deb Ridley and Kate Allwright with some of their craft exhibition.

CALOUNDRA Arts Centre Association’s next Arts and Crafts Fair is on Saturday, 12th November, 9.00am -4.00pm and Sunday, 13th November, 9.00am – 3.00pm at 5 North Street, Caloundra (opposite Rydges Oasis Resort). A wonderful array of quality handcrafted goods, made by the members, will be on sale. This is a marvellous opportunity to support your local community and pick up some unique items at the same time. All rooms at the 5 North Street Centre will be filled with an exciting and eclectic selection of handicrafts including Pottery, Woodwork, original Art and Pastels to Handmade Lace, Quilting, Embroidery, Jewellery and Silk Painting (to name but a few!). Christmas is not far away so this is an ideal opportunity to get in and purchase some early gifts. Handmade decorations and cards are a feature also. Some of our many talented members will be displaying their crafts with demonstrations. A feature of this year’s fair will be a travelling suitcase exhibition.

The Australian Textile Arts and Surface Design Association (ATASDA) is currently producing a travelling suitcase exhibition, “The Maharajah’s Garden”. This consists of a brightly decorated suitcase, containing at least twentyfive small textile works in a range of different media. Each work is accompanied by an A3 techniques board, explaining one of the methods used in construction of that piece. The Fair also has a Produce stall featuring genuine homemade goodies, including pickles, jams, slices and cakes. Plants, pre-loved books and raffles complete the picture. Light refreshments are available including sandwiches, Devonshire Teas and a sausage sizzle. Admission is free so gather your friends, come along and enjoy a great day out and maybe pick up a bargain or two. Some great gift ideas also! For more information contact Fair Convenor: Jill Barker via email: fair@caloundraartsandcrafts.org.au or visit the website www.caloundraartsandcrafts.org.au

AS the world’s population continues to grow, so does our reliance on honey bees. Honey bees help pollinate 1 in every 3 bites that we eat… they are vital in our agricultural industry and essential for the survival of the almost 7 billion people who inhabit this planet. And, as the world’s population continues to grow, so does our reliance on honey bees. Unfortunately, most pollinating insects throughout the world are endangered today, including the honey bee. $2 million funding was announced this year by the Federal Government to support the development of a national pilot program aimed at creating a solution to the management of Asian honey bees. The program will run over two years, and the Australian Honey Bee Industry Council has committed to working with Biosecurity Queensland as volunteers to save their industry. They will try to contain and suppress the pest to North Queensland. President of the Federal Council of Australian Apiarists Association and volunteer, Bill Weiss, said the

Christmas Gift Cooking & Wrapping

volunteer program was a positive way for industry to support the ongoing control of the Asian honey bee. “The beekeeping industry cannot survive with Asian bees,” Mr Weiss said. “The volunteer program is our way of helping to protect the industry by supporting the ongoing work to control this devastating pest.” Biosecurity Queensland is continuing to work with national and interstate jurisdictions and industry to develop an agreed operational plan for the transitional containment program. Since the detection of Asian honey bees in Cairns in 2007, Biosecurity Queensland has detected and destroyed 415 nests and swarms in the region. The Asian honey bee is an invasive species which adversely affects populations of European honey bees by competing for floral resources and robbing managed hives. This is not just about the honey on our morning toast. Bees could live without us, but could we live without bees?

DID you know that 80% of home fires start in the kitchen? Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) Station Officer Vic Van Vliet presented a demonstration within a controlled environment on the Gold Coast on what to do and what not to do in the event of a stove-top fire. Audience members were surprised how one small cup of water thrown on a cooking oil fire within a saucepan could create flames large enough to shoot out towards them. Vic is pictured demonstrating how to use a fire blanket. Fire blankets are available at hardware and department stores for about $20. For information about free QFRS Community Safety programs including Home Fire Safety for Seniors, and Safehome (a visit by your local fire crew), call 1300 369 003 or see http://www.fire.qld.gov.au/ communitysafety.

Know your holiday address

THE Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) is urging holiday-makers to know their holiday address and take the time to familiarise themselves with new surroundings. QAS South Eastern Region Acting Assistant Commissioner Stephen Zsombok said many holiday makers enjoyed their time away without incident; however, it was important for people to know their holiday address and beach access code in case of an

Uniting Church. Starting time for all concerts is 2.00pm. More information including location of ticket out-

Subsequent concerts are scheduled for 12 November at the Caloundra Uniting Church and 13 November at the Buderim

emergency. “Knowing your exact holiday address can cut minutes off emergency response times, which can mean the difference between life and death,” Mr Zsombok said. “In an emergency, people can be upset and can easily forget the address of a holiday home or become confused and give Triple Zero (000) Emergency Medical Dispatchers incorrect information. The QAS also stressed the importance of knowing beach access codes while on holidays. “In an emergency on a beach, it’s just as important for people to be able to correctly relay location information without delay,” Mr Zsombok said. “Every second counts in the case of serious incidents such as a near drowning, surfing or boating accidents and knowing your nearest beach access code can make all the difference. “Most beaches have numbered access points or signage and it is wise for all beachgoers to make a mental note of the number of their access point each time they use the beach.” In the event of an emergency, phone Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Can you give details of the film about the great American Indian sportsman of the early 20th century? The film you are referring to was called “Jim Thorpe-All American” (aka Man of Bronze) made by Warners Bros in 1951, directed by Michael Curtiz. The film starred Burt Lancaster as a native American from Oklahoma who goes to an Indian school in Pennsylvania and under the coaching of “Pop” Warner (Charles Bickford) becomes an all events champion. In 1912, he entered the Olympic Games in Stockholm winning both pentathlon and decathlon events. Wanting to settle down as a sports coach, he cannot find employ-

ment on racial grounds. It is then discovered he had played professional baseball (to earn a living in 1907 aged 19) which infringed on his amateur status and he was stripped of his medals. Amazingly he then becomes both a professional baseball player and footballer but his life is changed when his son dies of influenza. He continues downhill into drink, divorce and depression. Finding work as a truck driver he begins to coach youngsters and drifts into Hollywood “B” westerns of the 1930’s and 40’s. He died in 1953 aged 65; his Olympic medals were restored to him posthumously in 1982. Lancaster who was roughly the same height and weight as Thorpe was perfect for the role even at the age of 37 doing most of his own stunts. Thorpe was employed as a technical advisor on the film and was quoted as saying “Watching Burt playing the part I didn’t think I was that handsome.” Can you give details of the films pairing Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn? Tracy and Hepburn made 9 films together from 1942-67, the same years that paralleled their offscreen relationship. The idea of the teaming came

from a hunch by friend and screenwriter/director Garson Kanin. Both were stars in their own right when they met. Tracy (b.1900) had made 45 films and won two academy awards for “Captain Courageous” (1937) and “Boystown” (1938). Hepburn (b.1907) had made 17 films and won an Oscar for “Morning Glory” (1933). Their films were based on the battle of the sexes due to the contrast of their personalities. He was a mid western, brash realist to her classy sophisticate of New England heritage. Behind this however was the magic of respect, admiration, strength and humour, each bringing out the best in each other.

Their films included “Woman of the Year” (1942), “Keeper of the Flame” (1933), a solemn melodrama, “Without Love” (1945), “Sea of Grass” (1946), a brooding western, “State of the Union” (1948) “Adams Rib” (1948) and “Pat & Mike” (1952). The last two films were probably the best examples of their teaming. “Desk Set” (1957) was followed by “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” (1967), Tracy’s last film. Although very close during this time, they never married due to Tracy’s religious convictions. If you would like your questions answered, email Greg Goddard on gregsmoviememories@ gmail.com

THIS quilt made by Anne Hunt of Tewantin, recently won a first prize in Melbourne, as part of the “Fabric of Society” quilt competition. This was run in association with the Victorian Quilters’ Guild at their Quilt and Craft Fair. A very important part of every quilt is its story and the story of “Family Threads – A Wagga” is a moving one. “After Dad’s death I had gathered together a few pieces of his signature clothing because the quilter in me wanted to make a quilt from them as a form of therapy after losing a very spe-

cial dad. The quilt I had in mind was a Wagga which is a depression era quilt. Waggas were made from whatever scraps or fabrics were around at the time e.g. old clothing / furnishing fabrics, flour bags, old army blankets etc. More recently Waggas have become somewhat of an art form. My father died in 2009 and at the beginning of 2010 my older Brother Brendan came forward to inform us of his existence. Brendan was born on Dad’s 20th birthday, before Dad had met Mum. While Mum was aware that Dad had a son, it wasn’t until Brendan felt a need to make contact with his Dad in 1991, that they developed a relationship unbeknown to us all. We discovered after the event that Brendan had been at Dad’s funeral and some months later contacted an uncle to inform him that he was Dads son. Since then he has been warmly embraced by our large family to the delight of all. My celebratory response was to make the wagga for Brendan from Dad’s old clothes”. Come and see the quilter’s work, along with all our other art and craft at the Noosa Arts and Crafts Christmas Sale to be held from Saturday 26th November until the 3rd December from 9.30am until 3.30pm daily.
