IT was a September weekend overflowing with festivities as Broadbeach Kindergarten on Armrick Avenue celebrated its 60th anniversary while its neighbour across the park, the Royal Queensland Art Society and Gallery, marked its 50th year on the Gold Coast.

Bringing the two celebrations together through a combination of art and entertainment were creative friends and real-life artists Ursula Kelly and Ilia Chidzey.

Both Ursula - the colourful clown shown pictured and a dynamic senior to boot - and Ilia, the friendly feline aka ‘Cuddly Cat’, gave the appearance of having been magically lifted from the pages of a children’s storybook and transported on fairy dust to the Royal Queensland Art Society where a steady stream of kiddies, accompanied by proud parents, eagerly made their way across the grassy park from Broadbeach Kindergarten to have their faces painted by the good-natured duo.

It will be another decade before she is eligible for even a Seniors Discount Card but Sydney-born Ilia’s interest in art is something that is sure to stay with her forever. Ilia spent her formative years in the ACT, graduating from the University of Canberra with a Bachelor of Industrial Design.

Mural painting was her initial focus; later concentrating her professional energies on graphic design - a path she still vigorously pursues - after her son’s birth in 1995.

An industrial chemist by profession (her father didn’t see a future in art), Ursula’s shift to art took her to various European countries and to South Africa before she settled in Australia.

Today Ursula multitasks in commercial and fine art; teaching, judging, court case life drawing, theme designing, and exhibiting, including an installation at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

A number of murals around the Gold Coast also carry Ursula’s name.

In her ‘spare’ time, Ursula swims, canoes (hubby Barry was a canoeing Bronze Medallist in the 1984 LA Summer Olympics, pairing with Grant Kenny), does yoga, walks and, not long ago, bicycled 900km through the Loire Valley in France. The ladies of the club enjoyed a delightful lunch and fashion parade on the 20th September at The Watergarden Café Restaurant at Ross Evan’s Nursery at Coombabah. They were also entertained with a fashion parade

by Casbah Fashion of Arundel and Biggera Waters. The beautiful clothing and accessories were modelled by members of the club.

New initiative for a ready and resilient Qld QUEENSLAND will become Australia’s most resilient state through an initiative aimed at not only preparing for disasters, but ensuring life gets back to normal as quickly as possible.

Announcing a new Get Ready Queensland campaign, Premier Campbell Newman said the initiative will harness the skills, knowledge and tenacity of individuals, businesses, councils, not-for-profit organisations and community groups, ensuring the whole community plays their part in preparing for disasters.

“Queensland is a great state with a great climate and lifestyle but we all know that part of living in

Queensland means from time to time we have to deal with floods, cyclones, severe storms and bushfires,” Mr Newman said.

“We have responded to past disasters with a high level of resilience but our traditional response needs to evolve.

“We need to stop spending billions of dollars rebuilding everything after a disaster and adopt a more proactive approach that ensures we are not only well prepared for severe weather events, but that we take steps to minimise their effects so we can bounce back quickly.”

different communities.

This is about knowing your own local risks, anticipating what sorts of things could happen in your local area, and making a plan for what you and your family will do if it happens.”

Police and Community Safety Minister Jack Dempsey said the initiative would include a new communications campaign aimed at encouraging people to build their own resilience ‘step-bystep’, as well as a funding program to help councils deliver local resiliencebuilding events during a statewide week of activities from October 14 to 20, 2013. “We’ll be encouraging everyone to get involved in October and do something to get themselves, their families, neighbours, businesses, clubs or community groups, prepared and ready for the summer wet season,” Mr Dempsey said.

“This will include $2 million in funding for local councils to run their own community events promoting the Get Ready message. “This is just the first step in a multi-year initiative that will see us become the most disaster resilient state in Australia.

“It will take a collective effort from all of us to make that happen, but teamwork, tenacity and toughness are hallmarks of the Queensland character and I’m confident we can do it.”

Ageing loses its own Minister AGED and Community Services Australia (ACSA) is disappointed there is not a separate Minister for Ageing, following the new ministry announcement by the Prime Minister Tony Abbott. ACSA chief executive, Adjunct Professor John Kelly AM, said: “We would have seen it as a sign of leadership to give the ageing portfolio its own minister with that position being in Cabinet, particularly in view of community expectations of increased residential and community based aged care services in the near and long term future.” Professor Kelly added the decision does not recognise the tremendous challenges ahead or the government’s responsibilities for the changes in the community regarding the increasing ageing population.

One in 4 people will be aged 65 and over by 2056 and yet we have no minister for ageing at a time when Australia’s policy approach to longevity and ageing needs to be front and centre of any government’s agend.

If we don’t reconfigure our social structures to adapt to an ageing society with increased longevity, we risk an irretriev-

able loss to our quality of life. In 2010 Treasury released its Intergenerational Report, Australia to 2050. The re-

port concluded that a failure to act now to tackle intergenerational challenges would result in ‘severe economic, fiscal

and environmental consequences’.

Ageing and aged care are now part of the ‘Social Services’ portfolio.

Training aged care staff to deal with depression

OLDER people who require a high level of support to continue living in their own homes are twice as likely to experience depression compared to older people who need less support. In addition, the rate of depression among older people living in residential care is believed to be much higher than that of the general population – around 35 per cent, or one in three residents. The rate of anxiety in these groups is unconfirmed, but believed to be even higher than depression. It was these statistics, coupled with the limited training, which led beyondblue to develop the Professional Education to Aged Care (PEAC) Program for aged care staff. beyondblue has developed two workshops that make up the Professional Education to Aged Care (PEAC) Program. The first workshop is for staff working within residential care settings, including direct care staff and registered staff. This workshop has been developed, piloted and finalised.

The community care workshop is for the broad range of staff employed by community care agencies that

provide in-home care, including direct care staff, supervisors and care managers.

The overall objective of these workshops is to increase detection and improve management of depression and anxiety in older people in both residential and community aged care settings. beyondblue CEO Kate Carnell AO said case managers and community care staff who visit older people in their homes have a big impact on the mental health of those for whom they care.

“There are effective treatments available for depression and anxiety, regardless of a person’s age. Someone just has to be on the ball enough to pick up on the signs to get older people the help they need.”

The training program, Understanding Depression and Anxiety in Older People in the Community, is researchbased and modelled on beyondblue’s successful Professional Education to Aged Care (PEAC) program which was released last year for aged care staff working in residential facilities. National Seniors welcomes new federal ministers NATIONAL Seniors Australia has welcomed the appointment of Kevin Andrews as Minister for Social Services with responsibility for several aspects of ageing and Senator Mitch Fifield as Assistant Minister with responsibility for both age care and NDIS. National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said he welcomed the appointment of Andrews and Fifield to what would be a challenging role, particularly with seniors comprising a rapidly growing percentage of the population.

“As a minister in the inner Cabinet, Mr Andrews will oversee a huge and increasingly important portfolio and we wish him every success in his endeavours,” O’Neill said.

Health Minister Peter Dutton would also be a key appointment, according to O’Neill.

“Health, health costs, health insurance, PBS and so forth are all

critical issues to the over 50s and we look forward to providing input from a consumer perspective.”

O’Neill said the future would be challenging and it was likely the new government would look long and hard at policy issues and entitlements of all kinds

including those involving older Australians.

“We need to ensure that all considerations have regard to a consumer perspective and that more generally, there is an understanding among ministers of the challenge that is ageing.”

THE quiet achievers of the Gold Coast could soon be recognised with nominations now open for the annual Australia Day awards. Acting Mayor Councillor Donna Gates said it was important to celebrate our “unsung heroes” and recognise their efforts.

“If you know someone locally that inspires others through sport, has a passion for the environment, builds community spirit, or fosters our creative culture, I urge you to nominate them,” she said.

“The types of people who win these awards don’t often seek the limelight; they just get on with it, all the more reason for others to nominate them and give them the recognition they have earned.

“Nominating someone is even easier this year as details can be completed on the City of Gold Coast website.” The awards are offered in six categories and recognise individuals and groups that have made outstanding contributions to the community, and exceptional achievement in sporting, environmental or cultural endeavours. SENIORS NEWS Cultural Diversity Unites the Gold Coast at the 2013 Multicultural Festival The Tourism Confucius University was proud to Gold Coast Multicultural 2013. The Festival proInstitute (TCI) at Griffith participate in the annual Festival on September 8, vides a venue to celebrate and showcase the skills and talents of our city’s diverse cultural communities through a variety of exciting and educational multicultural activities culminating in the main Festival Day. The annual Festival has been running since 2008 and this year an estimated 37,000 people flocked to the Evandale Parklands to celebrate over 60 cultures that make up Australia’s sixth largest city.

The Tourism Confucius Institute carefully prepared various activities to demonstrate the unique Chinese culture, including Chinese paper-cut-

ting, an introductory experience with Chinese characters, a chopsticks contest and a Wing Chun martial arts demonstration. A Gold Coast citizen wowed the audience with his superb chopsticks skills while other guests demonstrated great interest in learning traditional Chinese paper cutting.

The TCI also promoted its Chinese language and culture courses, the Hanban Summer Camp and community cultural activities such as the Chinese National Day celebration at the Robina liLearning Chinese paper cutting brary.

IN September, members of the Burleigh Heads Ladies Probus Club celebrated their 26th birthday at a black and white luncheon held at The Garlic Clove restaurant overlooking picturesque Emerald Lakes. The event was well attended by members old and new, all attired in fashions complying with the black and white theme. Ten, twenty and twenty five year memberships were acknowledged and Audrey Chapman who at-

tended was presented with her 10 year membership pin. The cake was cut by our oldest member Stella Phillip.

The club meets at 10.30am on the third Wednesday of the month at the Burleigh Heads SLSC, Gold Coast Highway, with a guest speaker and lunch.

Southport Girl Guides celebrating 90 years SOUTHPORT Girl Guides will be celebrating its 90th birthday at the Guide Hut, 4 Margaret Street, Southport, on Saturday, November 9, from 1pm to 5pm. The first Southport Girl Guide Company was formed at St Hilda’s School for Girls in February, 1922 with Miss Armstrong as Captain. A second company, 1st Southport, was formed in March 1922 with Miss Purnell as warranted leader. In April 1922, St Hilda’s and 1st Southport Companies joined together, with Miss Purcell as Captain and Miss Armstrong as Brown Owl. The Company has run almost continuously since then. Meetings were held in the Army Hut and then in the supper room of the Memorial Hall on the corner of Lawson and Scarborough Streets, Southport. Current District Leader and Trefoil Guild President, Bev ‘Bahloo’ Lloyd (nee Smith), became a member and Guide leader in 1978.

Bev has lived in Southport most of her life and remembers family names of the original Guides: Napper, Lippien,

Bailey, Reilly, Spendelove, Woodroffe, McKenzie and Willoughby. Bev went to school with some of the 1950s Guides with the familiar Southport names Gardner, Mitchell, Ward, Mills, Ellis, Auld, McChesney-Clark,

SENIORS NEWS Link between type 2 diabetes and reduced brain function Australian scientists have discovered a direct link between type 2 diabetes and reduced brain function in the elderly. The Sydney Memory and Ageing study found older people who develop type 2 diabetes experience a greater decline in brain performance than those who live without the condition.

However, the research found that good management of blood glucose levels reduces the risk of the decline in brain performance.

The study also issues a warning to those living with pre-diabetes, encouraging them to do everything in their power to prevent developing type 2 diabetes as it could halt the cognitive decline.

The study was led by Professor Katherine Samaras, Research Fellow

and Head of the Diabetes and Obesity Clinical Studies, Diabetes and Obesity Research Program at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research.

Professor Samaras said it is a breakthrough. “It’s not necessarily related to a duration effect of diabetes,” said Professor Samaras.

“Even if you’ve reached your mid 70s or early 80s and you haven’t got diabetes, if you have pre diabetes, you probably should be doing everything to prevent getting diabetes because we think that that may actually halt that cognitive decline that we are seeing.”

COOLANGATTA Tweed View Club was well represented at the VIEW Clubs of Australia Annual Convention held recently on the Gold Coast.

The Convention attracted 800 VIEW members from all states of Australia and comprised two Conference Days; a choice of social functions; a gala dinner and a grand celebration.

On day one, the Women of Inspiration spoke on an array of subjects that inspired and excited; stimulated and amused.

On day two, the Voice of View, the George Forbes Oration, was delivered by the Governor of Queensland Ms Penelope Wensley, and speakers from The Smith Family and from VIEW Clubs of Australia gave details of services

THE foster program is an important part of the RSPCA. Our wonderful foster carers provide temporary care for a wide range of animals in need.

Many of these animals are simply too young for desexing and adoption.

Others may be injured, sick or have a behavioural issue that needs addressing. Some need care outside of adoption centre opening hours and others have come through our Pet Legacy or Pets in Crisis Programs.

Each year, fabulous foster carers from across Queensland care for more than 5000 cats, kittens, puppies, poultry, livestock, horses and pocket pets. These generous people take in foster animals, for anywhere from a few days to many

months. Whatever the reason, the same applies to all; a home environment is far more desirable than a concrete pen or wire cage. A home environment and loving foster family allow the animals to grow, thrive and recover in a much more stress-free and caring

Who can be a foster carer? We are looking for people who are advocates for animal welfare; people who want to open their hearts and homes to an animal in need of short or long term care. You will need to: Be over 18 years of age; Have a safe and

secure environment for housing animals; Give time and attention to your foster animals; Ensure your own animals are fully vaccinated and compatible with other animals; Have your own reliable transport; Obtain permission from your landlord if renting.

Saying goodbye to your foster animals can be sad but most foster carers will tell you that the rewards of giving animals another chance in life far outweigh the pain of parting. There are always plenty of animals waiting for a caring temporary home and your role in preparing these animals for their future is a very im-

RSPCA Qld provides carers with food, health treatments, veterinary care and equipment (e.g. carry crate, bedding, leads and collars). Carers usually supply kitty litter and anything that we may be running short of.

You will be invited to Basic Foster Care Training and lined up for a property check.

Palm Beach Happy Group

THE Group have been enjoying increasing numbers of members attending the meetings with the warmer weather now arriving.

Also the trip to Harrigan’s Drift Inn at Jacobs Well was a great success on August 30th with forty two members enjoying the beautiful meal provided. Most members chose the Guinness Pie and Vegetables followed by a luscious Cheese Cake and bottomless tea and coffee. Fish and Chips and Salad and Chicken and Chips and Salad was also on the menu.

The cost of our trips are subsidized by the Group and members pay only a small donation of $20 to cover Coach and Meals.

Our Coach stopped for morning tea at Cabbage Tree Point and Jo’s cooking was also enjoyed by all at that venue. With another interruption on the way home at the Strawberry Farm most members managed to put away one of the very popular Ice Creams on sale there.

During the last few weeks the entertainment at the Share-n-Care Hall on a Friday has been excellent with many

popular groups performing. The Scallywags, The Golden Girls, Lorraine-Brian and Barry and also the Entertainers are always very welcome and enjoyed. Thank you to all these Groups for the great shows.

CSIRO scientist Dr Mark York says a safe and effective sunscreen for human use has been developed.

‘The filters are clear in colour, virtually odourless and very stable, which makes them easy to be incorporated into any emulsion,’ he said.

The sunscreen is expected to be on the global market within five years.

The research builds on work by scientists at the Australian Institute of Marine Science who were the first to discover the natural sun screening ability of the reef’s corals.

IT’S a friendly spot and well worth a look-in by anyone (particularly the over-45s) who enjoys indoor lawn bowls; socialising, and delicious afternoon teas.

Every Tuesday and Sunday from 12.30pm, the Runaway Bay and District Seniors Indoor Bowls Club rolls out the mats and puts the yellow and red bowling balls in place. Then the fun begins.

This active Club is the only Gold Coast indoor bowls club that uses the imported-from-Scotland yellow and red bowling balls, colours that make playing easier for vision impaired participants.

With Club membership only $2 per year (that’s right, only $2 per year), plus $3 per person per playing session (and that includes homemade afternoon tea), the turnout is always good. Queensland light vehicle registration label use ending

THE Queensland Government has decided to end the use of registration stickers for light vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes from 1 October 2014.

The decision will bring Queensland into line with most other Australian states which have already abandoned stickers.

Registration labels were first introduced in Queensland in 1932.

Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson said advances in technology meant the detection of unregistered vehicles could be done using number plate recognition, rather than citing a sticker on the front windscreen.

“The key issue in making this decision was to be satisfied that there will not be an increase in the number of unregistered vehicles in Queensland,” he said.

“Once the labels are no longer required, the public will be able to check the registration status of their vehicle online or by calling the TMR call centre.”

ONE in 3 men over 50 have benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) commonly known as an enlarged prostate, this number rises to nearly 80% of men when they reach 70. While BPH is not fatal like prostate cancer, it can cause a lot of pain and inconveniences.

Common symptoms are frequent and painful urination, and for some cases sexual performance is affected. It is no wonder that we have reached epidemic proportions, yet so few men talk openly about it.

For those who have approached their doctors for advice, more often than not, an effective treatment is quickly and conveniently made available. Surgery is usually the last-resort due to the unpleasant nature of the side-effects such as incontinence and impotence.

Most cases can be adequately treated with orally taken over-the-counter medication such as the popular Magnus Shield, developed and distributed by Graminex Australia.

According to Mr. Indra, spokesperson for Graminex Australia, men in general do tend to be tight-lipped about their current condition.

“Its normal for men to feel uncomfortable talking about their prostate and their symptoms (of BPH), that’s okay, we understand, “says Indra, who does his best to personally answer questions from individual callers.

He has spoken to many concerned wives whose husbands are reluctant to acknowledge the issue.

“Eventually we hope to get more men to come forward and share about their prostate issues. This is our way of showing our support for this common condition”, says Indra.

Trevor Cottle, who is in charge of running the regular meetings with his prostate support group in Box Hill, Victoria, underwent prostate surgery 8 years ago and lost his brother to prostate cancer, feels the same.

He added, “ the prostate support groups have been formed by men, for men, who are interested in prostate health issues and want to do something about.”

SENIORS NEWS New $2 coin commemorates Queen’s coronation in 1953 LOOK out for this one in your change - the Royal Australian Mint recently unveiled a new circulating commemorative $2 coin with a splash of purple colour.

The coin celebrates the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. The coin is the second colourful coin the RAM has issued for circulation. The first was a $2 coin with a red poppy released in October 2012.

Two million Coronation $2 coins are being released, quadruple the amount of the Poppy $2 coin.

Every Wednesday a group of dedicated volunteers set out to offer support, friendship and a varied and fun program including a regular weekly morning tea, well more like a high tea in the morning, with a variety of delicacies. The guests then break up into groups and enjoy a variety of card and tables games, indoor bowls, darts, join a knitting circle, learn to make gift cards cards or just sit and read a book from the free lending library. Over the past year they have had a visit to government house and met the Governor, had a visit from a children’s choir and many entertainers, laughed through an Easter Bonnet fun day, Bingo and had BBQ’s and many guests speakers. Auctions and raffles help to raise funds to keep the Centre functioning.

Our membership fee until the end of 2013 is just $20 and there is no further cost to attend one (or more) of our many courses.

Every member of our U3A is aware of the benefits of belonging to an organisation like ours which encourages a healthy outlook on life mentally, physically and emotionally. We know that our cryptic crosswords, Scrabble and learning one of the four foreign languages we offer, stimulate the grey matter. We are all aware of the physical advantages of taking part in our beach or pavement walking groups and the value of participating in our yoga or social tennis sessions.

We also tick all the boxes when it comes to our emotional wellbeing, for it’s impossible to feel dejected after spending 1½

hrs. at our Singing for Pleasure group. Art, poetry and gardening are other uplifting activities.

“Portraits” More Musical Magic by the Gold Coast Philharmonic THE Gold Coast Philharmonic Orchestra will present a unique concert that will combine music with photography, art and video on Saturday 16 November at 7.30pm and Sunday 17 November at 2.30pm at The Queensland Academies Theatre, Edmund Rice Drive, Southport. Titled “Portraits”, the program will feature Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, Grand March from Aida, Promenade from Pictures at an Exhibition, Grieg’s Morning from Peer Gynt Suite and the colourful Somewhere over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz, Shostakovich’s Tea for Two, made famous in the musical No No Nanette and more.

Conductor, Mark Turpin, says that “The Queensland Academies Theatre which includes an Art Gallery is part of the Qld Academy for Health Sciences and is the perfect setting to view the photography of Yuichiro Yanome and the art of Children’s book author and illustrator John Harrison and an exhibition and live painting by members of the Royal Queensland Arts Society.

The concert featuring our own 50 piece symphony orchestra, will blend video and art with the wonderful orchestral music. I am very excited about this program which will not only present our usual high quality orchestral repertoire to the Gold Coast audiences and showcase our wonderful local musicians but also to continue the tradition we have of working with and supporting our fellow local community organisations.

RUNAWAY Bay VIEW Club has now connections with local Coombabah Primary School and we are now supporting a newly launched Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Project which has been developed

by The Smith Family. We were invited to morning tea with other community groups who are supporting this project. We are supporting this initiative by collecting jars and seeds donated by our Members and by making aprons for the children. The children in Grade 4 are taught horticulture by planting and growing from seed their vegetables and herbs and then using their produce to cook in the kitchen.

This is a practical way of showing the children how they can learn, and develop their culinary skills for life.

That letter [or something like it] was written by me nearly 58 years ago. I had just arrived in New Caledonia on a student exchange programme and plunged straight into family life with people who spoke no English, so my high school French was suddenly put to a searching test. After 2 months, I could certainly say more than “bonjour” and as a bonus, had learned a few choice expletives which stood me in good stead in France in later years.

Since then I’ve been back to Nouméa a few times and on a recent visit I started wondering why more Australians don’t go there. For a start, today’s flights take only 2 hours from Brisbane…about the same as flying to Melbourne. Then there’s the stimulating prospect

that amount every night and if you alternate with self-catering, it’s manageable. Unlike Bali, or even Thailand, the French cuisine here is the real thing.

Finally there’s a complete range of accommodation in Nouméa, from B&Bs to luxury resorts like Le Méridien and the superbly renovated Château Royal at Anse Vata Beach. My first stay there was at its opening in 1966 when Toni Lamond was the star attraction! It’s a beautiful property, right on the beach and there’s an amazing new spa feature called Aquatonic where you can get pummelled by water jets…a complete nohands body massage!

If you’ve been all over the world, and somehow missed New Caledonia, it’s time to say “bonjour” to Nouméa

Let’s Get Local Kindy celebrates 60 years THE weather was wonderful and the ambiance amazing as Broadbeach Kindergarten (Armrick Avenue near Broadbeach Boulevard) celebrated its 60th birthday in September. Broadbeach Kindergarten is the oldest such facility on the Gold Coast.

Hundreds of adults and children took the opportunity to enjoy day-long celebrations, which included a feastof-fun that spilled over into the park next door, as well as into the Royal Queensland Art Society (across the park, and celebrating its 50th anniversary the same weekend) where a colourful clown and her friendly feline friend were having fun face painting. Dogs and cats taking toll on wildlife!

PET dogs and cats are decimating our native wildlife.

Over 4,000 native animals a year are being brought into RSPCA Qld’s Wildlife Hospital. “We’ve had over 100 in the last three weeks alone,” said Wildlife Veterinarian Tania Bishop. “We urge people to please make certain their pets are contained, particularly at night. This time of year is the worst with animals, birds and reptiles all giving birth. Their young are particularly susceptible to attacks.” The exotic Cocos Palms are also adding to the problem with flying foxes venturing onto the ground to feed on the fruit.

“The seeds can also be poisonous if eaten green so we’d urge people to at least pick up any fruit that drops to the ground or better still get rid of these palms altogether.” Koalas, possums, gliders, flying foxes, bearded dragons, water dragons and a myriad of bird species are among the animals brought into the hospital after being attacked.””Responsible pet ownership extends to protecting out native animals,” said Dr Bishop.

FOOD plants for two locally threatened butterfly species were planted at Bruce Chick Park near Stotts Island (close to Tweed Heads) to commemorate this year’s National Threatened Species Day. National Threatened Species Day 7th September commemorates the day in 1936 that the last known living Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) died in captivity at Hobart Zoo. Over 100 specimens of the Arrowhead Violet, the only food plant of the endangered Australian Fritillary butterfly, were planted.

The ten residents ranging from 76 to 96 years old had no fear as they climbed aboard and took off for the ride of a lifetime.

Jetboat Extreme Owner Christine Gilmore says while they took a couple of the wild 360-degree turns out of the mix for the Tall Trees ride, they were still impressed to see the fearlessness from the residents during the ride.

“It was certainly very different for us with a number of the residents in their nineties – but they loved every minute of it and it was great to see seniors their age willing to go on a ride like ours,” Ms Gilmore says.

“We have three boats that hold up to 46 people and we can do up to eight runs per boat a day.

“Of all the different types of passengers we see come and go each day, Tall Trees residents are definitely the oldest and bravest group that we’ve seen to date.”

AS the human population continues to inch closer to 8 billion people, feeding all those hungry mouths will become increasingly difficult. A growing number of experts claim that people will soon have no choice but to consume insects.

As if to underscore that claim, a group of students from McGill University in Montreal has won the 2013 Hult Prize, for producing a protein-rich flour made from insects.

The prize gives the students $1 million in seed money to begin creating what they call Power Flour.

“We will be starting with grasshoppers,” team captain Mohammed

Ashoursaid.

Earlier this year, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) released a report titled, “Edible Insects: Future Prospects for Food and Feed Security.” The document details the health and environmental benefits derived from a diet supplemented by insects, a diet also known as “entomophagy.” Gleaned from the FAO document and other sources, here are seven edible insects you may soon find on your dinner plate – mopane worms, grasshoppers, witchetty grubs, termites, palm weevils, stink bugs and mealworms.

SENIORS NEWS Opportunity of a lifetime for Sandra Paul SANDRA Paul was thrilled at the chance of sitting in the orchestra pit with musicians during the Gold Coast Philharmonic’s Seniors Week Open Rehearsal but the opportunity of a lifetime was yet to come for this Carrara resident.

The Open Rehearsal meant guest seniors could get the feel of being part of an orchestra even without instruments to play. It took them out of the audience and into the heart of the musical occasion, a rare opportunity.

Conductor Mark Turpin good naturedly put the orchestra through its paces during the rehearsal as more than 30 guest seniors watched on

from within the orchestra.

The rehearsal was in preparation for The Teddy Bears Picnic program, held in September at the new Helensvale Auditorium.

Towards the end of the Open Rehearsal, Mark asked if any of the guest seniors wanted to take a turn conducting the orchestra.

Initially, the silence was deafening, as the offer came out of the blue, but then a single voice from the strings section boldly offered: “I’ll do it.” That voice belonged to Sandra Paul.

Confidently, Sandra took the podium and after Mark explained a few basic baton moves, Sandra became ‘Maestro

Later Sandra cheerfully described herself as “a

former piano player who now only plays the pianola”, adding that this was the first time she had
