ANZAC Day honours all who have served ANZAC Day, observed each year on 25 April, is considered by many as Australia’s most significant national day of commemoration. Originally designated as a day of remembrance to mark the anniversary of the Gallipoli Campaign, the first major military action fought by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs) during World War I, today ANZAC Day in this country honours all Australians who have served, and those who have died, in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations over the years. New Zealand also commemorates ANZAC Day with services rich in tradition and ritual. Trevor Webster and Ron Dunks, both 88, and Ron’s son-in-law John Shearer, 66, are three returned servicemen now living locally. Originally from across the Tasman, Trevor was a volunteer who elected to go into the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a cadet. He then served in the RNZAF from May 1943 to October 1947. Training as a Flight Rigger, Trevor initially was a crew member on a plane delivering mail and troops to Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. In 1944 he became part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) and was shipped to Iwakuni, Japan, as ground crew with No 14 Fighter Squadron. He smiles at the fact that, upon discharge, the flight from Iwakuni to Auckland on a two-engine DC3 took seven days, with stops including Darwin, Brisbane and Norfolk Island. Originally from a farming background in Auckland, Trevor says his father was too young to fight in WW1, and then was a member of the NZ Home Guard during WW2 because farming was considered a necessary occupation on the home front. Ron Dunks also was a volunteer, joining the Australian Army at age 17; saying he was 18. Ron served in New Guinea and Borneo between 1941 and 1945 with the 2/12 Field Regiment, 9th Division, originally Infantry; later Artillery. Ron, whose cousin went down with the HMAS Sydney (II) in 1941, didn’t want to elaborate on his experiences but quietly said ‘they were an eye-opener; a totally different world.’ Continued on Page 2
