FROM 2 September 2013, eligible Gold Coast seniors will be able to travel for free by bus from 9am to 3.30pm,Monday to Friday.

The Free Seniors Travel scheme is part of the City of Gold Coast’s drive to encourage more Gold Coasters to use public transport, and to make better use of existing services. It will initially operate as a trial until 31 March 2014. Mayor Tom

Tate said the announcement is great news for seniors, and will make better use of buses during the day. “It will give Gold Coast seniors the freedom and flexibility to travel on weekdays, whether it’s to spend time with family or friends, go shopping or just get more involved in what’s going on in the community. I hope this will make a big difference to many of our seniors and will ultimately

The Southport Special School curriculum caters for about 180 students with disabilities.

Crack-down on motorised scooters at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games

PLANS to place a limit on the number of mobility scooters allowed into Commonwealth Games venues is outrageous and discriminatory, according to the lobby group for seniors. Media outlets have reported that the Queensland Government is concerned about overcrowding at the Commonwealth Games and is considering implementing news laws which allow venue management to place a cap on the number of mobility scooters at sporting venues. National Seniors Australia chief executive Michael O’Neill slammed the proposed limit on mobility scooters and said it was one of the most outrageous plans he had ever heard of and a ‘dumb’ response to the ageing of the population. “If a venue reaches their capacity of mobility scooters for the day, will mobility scooter patrons be refused a ticket and told they can’t enter?” O’Neill said.

“I’d like to know just what government advisers were thinking of when they came up with these plans.

“We have just seen the national Parliament pass a most

historic disability scheme, the NDIS, and now Queensland’s bureaucrats are saying they’re worried about too many mobility scooters clogging stadiums and other sporting venues. “What kind of message does this send to our society?” O’Neill said the plans could set a worrying precedent around the country. “We are concerned that if they are looking to cap the number of mobility scooters at these events, is the next step capping the number of wheelchairs?” he added. “It’s a scary thought and could set a worrying precedent for all public event venues around Australia.” Under the Commonwealth’s Disability Discrimination Act, it is unlawful for public places such as sporting venues to be made inaccessible to people with a disability. The Queensland Anti-Discrimination Act says people should have access to any place that members of the public are permitted to use, including entertainment and sporting facilities. According to a September 2012 report there were around 231,000 mobility scooter users in Australia.

They had been living at Seaforth Beach at the time, and had already planned to sell their property on the beach and move back to the Gold Coast.

Margaret’s sister, Liz now enters the picture after a friend living at De Paul Manor suggested Liz take Margaret for a look through the award winning Ashmore retirement community, and the rest is history.

Dedicated committee members and volunteer helpers decorated the centre and the dining tables, and prepared and served a scrumptious Christmas feast that had many going back for more.

After the luncheon and once the tables were cleared (with the 85 attendees kindly helping here), the focus was on the dance floor.

Opening an afternoon of dancing entertainment were Robert Spencer and Diana Cooke of the

Thursday morning Square Dancing group who presented elegant routines for everyone’s enjoyment. Other guests then joined in for Line Dancing and New Vogue, danced to music that kept anyone taking time out on the sidelines hand-clapping and toe-tapping.

The day went by faster than ‘ho ho ho’ but comments heard throughout the event included “fantastic”; “delicious food”; “wonderful fun”; “loved the dancing”; “great company”; “can’t wait until the next occasion”.

Tax deduction cap shortsighted A PROPOSED $2000 a year cap on tax deductions for professional education was a shortsighted slap in the face for older workers, consumer lobby group for the over 50s, National Seniors Australia said.

The move announced in the May budget was also contrary to the federal government’s own strategy for overcoming barriers to employment for older workers.

National Seniors’ chief executive Michael O’Neill said that if the legislation comes into force on 1 July 2014, it will impose an additional barrier on people maintaining their skills and could hasten the retirement of experienced skilled professionals.

“This is short sighted and ignores the wealth of knowledge and experience gathered over a lifetime,” O’Neill said.

“Investing in one’s own professional development is simply good practice.

“Older Australians are encouraged by ministers and bureaucratic advisers to maintain the currency of their skills but this proposal quite simply devalues that advice and plays right into the kind of attitudes that result in entrenched discrimination against mature aged workers.” A survey of Barriers to Employment for Mature Age Australians in 20112012 showed that an overwhelming majority (85.7%) of respondents believed there was not only a mismatch of skills and experience with industry demands but also there were barriers to retraining and up-skilling.

O’Neill said the research

ment had a detrimental effect on the Australian economy.

It not only reduced the size of the labour force, but also meant that employers had to forego the skills and knowledge of mature age people, their substantial contributions to productivity, as well as their capacity to mentor younger workers.

New test to tackle antibiotic resistance A TASMANIAN research project, facilitated by Clifford Craig Medical Research Trust, has delivered ground breaking results that will benefit millions of people worldwide.

During Medical Research Week recently, the success of chief investigator Dr Stephen Tristram, from the University of Tasmania, and his PhD student and associate investigator, Elizabeth Witherden, was being celebrated.

The pair has investigated the rapid emergence of antibiotic resistance in Haemophilus Influenzae – a bacterial pathogen that is frequently involved in respiratory infections, such as pneumonia and middle ear infections.

Antibiotic resistance has been declared by the World Health Organisation as one of the three biggest global threats to human health.

The pair has published a new molecular test – set to

be implemented internationally – that accurately detects the resistance.

It will prove a handy tool, given that about 30% of strains of H. Influenzae are resistant to the three most commonly prescribed antibiotics for respiratory tract infections.

“The problem with antibiotic resistance is that it is sometimes difficult to detect and patients end up receiving an antibiotic that doesn’t work as well as an alternative, or in the worst case, doesn’t work at all,” Dr Tristram said.

“We hope that our findings will help laboratories be able to more easily detect antibiotic resistance and better guide prescribing by doctors.

“This is significant because there are about 20 million prescriptions for antibiotics every year in Australia, many of which are prescribed for respiratory tract infections.”

Naturally, these seniors find comfort in continuing to live in the home that holds so many fond

memories for them. But, as the years pass by, they also find it more and more difficult to maintain their home as they had in the

past. No one understands the dilemma seniors face better than their own family and close friends.

For seniors facing one of the most significant decisions in their life, its important to consider the processes of downsizing a home.

Supermarket foods packed with hidden salt

TOO many of Australia’s everyday foods sold in supermarkets are overloaded with salt and causing unnecessary deaths from heart attacks and strokes, the National Heart Foundation of Australia says.

The Heart Foundation is calling for the Australian Government to implement a four-point National Action Plan on Salt and is launching a new campaign to get hidden salt out of everyday foods before they hit the supermarket shelves.

Heart Foundation’s national spokesperson, Kellie-Ann Jolly said eating too much salt can cause high blood pressure and increases the risk of heart attack.

“Australian adults are each eating 3.2 kg of salt every year, which is three times more than we need. Children also eat more than three times what they need – an alarming 2.2 kg each year,” Ms Jolly said.

“These days, most of the salt we consume is not added at the table, but hidden in the food we eat every day.

“Around 75 per cent of the salt we consume is hidden in the processed foods we eat; like bread, breakfast cereals, processed meats, cheese, sauces and spreads,” she said.

Reducing our intake of salt from processed foods by just 15 per cent over 10 years would avert 5,800 heart attacks and 4,900 strokes a year.

“Given all the hidden salt in our everyday processed foods, it is almost impossible for people to cut salt from their diet unless they eliminate all processed

That’s why we’re calling for action to halt the hidden salt in supermarket and takeaway products and make our food healthier,” she added.

“We want the government to commit to a National Action Plan on Salt. This means increasing funding for industry programs to make our food healthier, making salt targets mandatory for all processed and takeaway foods, implementing the new star rating food labelling system and educating the community so we can all make healthier choices.

“We know Australians are eating too much salt, so if we’re to beat heart disease - Australia’s number 1 killer - we need to cut Australia’s salt intake by a third.” The Heart Foundation’s National Director of Cardiovascular Health, Dr Rob Grenfell added that the Heart Foundation has been leading the way for more than 20 years through the work of our Tick Program helping Australians make healthier choices.

“Gradually over time we’ve been helping make our supermarket foods healthier by working with industry to reduce this hidden killer. SENIORS NEWS Beverley Kirk honoured for Blue Care service

Beverley Kirk is pictured with proud husband Jim after she was honoured for 32 years dedicated service with Blue Care.

BEVERLEY Kirk who, according to proud husband Jim “is almost 70 with absolutely no thought of retiring”, has been officially honoured for 32 years dedicated service with community care and support organisation Blue Care.

As one of the longest serving Blue Care staff members, Beverley recalls that she “started working with the Blue Nurses in 1980, as a registered nurse in community care”.

Bev continues: “In those days, cars were shared, with two registered nurses travelling together to visit clients who lived in the same area. We did all personal care, including cutting people’s nails, giving medica-

tions, attending to dressings, compression stockings, continence care and catheters.

“Around 1987, Blue Care started offering centrebased respite. I was the first supervisor of this service which, at first, was only one afternoon a week.

People using the service were collected by bus and brought to the Elanora Uniting Church for activities, friendship and fun, and also to give their carers an afternoon off from care responsibilities. I continued work with community visits on the other days but, in 1988, Blue Care built Akirra Cottage Respite Care and I became full-time supervisor of this new venture.”

Beverley says that over the years she has learned to adapt to change.

“Blue Care has always been a leader in aged care, keeping up with industry trends and changes and educating staff. Who would have thought, 32 years ago, that one day all resident information would be stored on computers? Or that we would be able to offer so many support services to help people remain in their own homes?”

For the past 20 years, Bev has worked at Pineshaven Aged Care Facility at Elanora. Her experience sees her in demand as a coach, continence advisor and manual handling facilitator.

“Over the years I’ve made some wonderful friends in the workplace, and each of the residents I’ve cared for has been special to me,” she says. “I always treat them as I would treat my own parents. Each one of these special people has a story to tell, if you take the time to listen.

“I love my job. I have been given much more than I ever expected in job satisfaction and hope to be able to enjoy my position for years to come.”

8th National Over 60s/70s Cricket Championships

For what it’s worth RECENTLY I came across a product called “Super Fresh Bags”. These bags store food in the fridge for freshness and longevity. I’m sure most of us Villagers waste fruit and vegetables because they “go off” before we get to use them up completely. Well, this need not happen any more and the proof is in the pudding. Prior to Christmas I put various items in these bags to test. On returning some three weeks later all of my vegetables were as I left them – fresh and ready to eat. In fact, I now have had some spring onions stored for over six weeks and they are still fresh. A cut, half-used, cucumber, which normally goes mushy and soggy because of the water content is still fine after three weeks and mint is now fresher and crisper than when I put it in and it has been there

for over three weeks too.

My personal experience with these bags has been nothing short of fantastic and for what it is worth I want to share this with you. Not only is your fruit and vegetables fresh but the bags pay for themselves in no time flat. My fridge has about 10 bags in it now with various contents – all fresh and preserved for use when I need them.

Cheap Commonwealth Games tickets to stay GOLD Coast 2018 Games bosses have committed to keeping ticket prices as low as $13, despite the fact Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Gamesorganisers are charging almost double that for similar seats.

Gold Coast Games chairman Nigel Chamier said he would prefer to keep the stadiums full, rather than make a big profit from ticket sales in five years.

“I think the Games will be a wonderful opportunity for the community, at all levels, to get involved,” he said. “I would like to see every seat taken.”

Gold Coast Games Corporation CEO Mark Peters said there were no plans to increase ticket prices from the numbers included in the bid book, back in 2011. “We want the Games to be affordable and accessible,” he said. “We have no intention to take the prices up.”

Spectators will pay $25.36 for the chance to watch lawn bowls, badminton and table tennis in Glasgow, while the same events will cost just $13 a ticket four years later on the Gold Coast.

There is an almost $50 difference in the top-tier tickets for the closing ceremony between the two events, with the Gold Coast event setting people back $290 compared to the Glasgow tickets, which

are advertised for $338.17.

The cheapest tickets for the Gold Coast closing ceremony, at Metricon Stadium, will cost $35, while in Glasgow people will pay $50.72 and still sit in the bleachers. Mr Peters said Glasgow organisers were charging more because they believed people were willing to pay.

“Glasgow is a different market from the Gold Coast,” he said.

“When we worked out our ticket pricing, we looked at pricing for a whole lot of events like Titans and Suns matches.

They would have done the same and obviously believe they can fill the stadiums with those prices.”

The only ticket prices between the two events that are close are the most expensive seats for the opening ceremony, which will cost $410 on the Gold Coast and $422.71 in Glasgow.

Prices for the Gold Coast Games are in line with those advertised for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, except for the opening ceremony where people paid as much as $590 a ticket.

But the events for all three Games are significantly more expensive than the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, where the starting price for tickets to many sports was less than $1.

THEY were hoping for sunny weather (which we turned on for them!), & also enjoyed warm hospitality from members of FF Gold Coast during their visit from South Australia.

Eighteen members from Friendship Force Murray Bridge enjoyed a week of diverse activities which had been arranged for them by the Gold Coast club.

A farewell lunch at Queensland University Women’s College started the exchange off when the group said their “goodbyes” to the Brisbane club where they had been hosted for the previous week. Arriving on the Gold Coast they were made welcome by Gold Coast members & treated to a lavish finger food reception. This was just the start of a great week filled to overflowing with organized outings which included a visit to the amazing Q1 SkyPoint Observation Deck in Surfer’s Paradise, seafood lunch at The Spit, day trip to Tamborine including the Glow Worm Cave, wine tasting & lunch at Cedar Creek Winery, wonderful cruise aboard the “Rum Runner” from Hope Island Marina to Calypso Bay with lunch at Harrigan’s Irish Pub & an outing to Springbrook with visits to Purling Brook & Best of All Lookouts; all of these activities were interspersed with dinners at members’ homes & optional touring during the free time included in the itinerary. Amongst the highlights of the week was the wonderful “Outback Spectacular” show which left all those who attended totally entertained.

A great week spent with new friends culminated with a tropical fruit/sausage sizzle/pikelet breakfast on the foreshore at beautiful Burleigh Heads.

The visitors from South Australia were in complete agreement that they had seen a side of the Gold Coast they had not dreamed existed – stunning scenery both along the coast & in the hinterland, extremely hospitable Gold Coast club members – and oh yes – the warm, sunny weather they had hoped for…!

Broadbeach Senior Citizen’s Table Tennis Club

OPEN Day for the Broadbeach Senior Citizen’s Table Tennis Club on Tuesday 20 th August 2013. Seniors Week was a perfect time for the Official Opening of the New Table Tennis Club. It has been extraordinary how much the local community was in need of a Table Tennis Club in this area.

The Senior Citizen’s Centre is a wonderful venue with its parquet floor, lovely big kitchen, plenty of storage area and huge playing room. Plenty of free parking at the Centre and locality just off the Highway near the central Broadbeach CBD. (Excepting the Boat Ramp car park – fines apply). Since beginning in May 2013 the number of new members each week is astounding.

How many times have we heard “Oh I haven’t played for 20 years or more”, well, it doesn’t matter. The club is all about Playing Table Tennis for fun, fitness and enjoy a social gather with like minded people. We are currently using www.seniorsnewspaper.com.au

Parrots in Paradise shows at her Glasshouse Mountains exotic bird sanctuary, eight kilometres south of Australia Zoo. The centre is dedicated to conservation and preservation through education and entertainment and there are two ways in which visitors can enjoy their visit – either with the spectacular show or on a conducted tour.

The show often has tour groups laughing with astonishment at the bizarre circus tricks and comical chatter of Dail’s feathered friends.

There is nowhere else that you can see birds such as these, behaving in the most natural way, all while happily getting involved in the show.

For the birds, the show is actually a creative play day. All the tricks they perform are extensions of natural parrot behaviour. In fact while they are enjoying themselves, being the centre of attention, they are actually showing how incredibly clever and intelligent they are, and their understanding, puzzle solving, and their cognitive behaviour has to be seen to be believed.

Shows start at 10.30 am but plan to arrive half an hour before the show to allow time for your complimentary tea/ coffee. The show cost is $20 per head for groups of 15-20 and a discounted $15 per head for groups of more than 20.

The whole visit will finish around lunchtime so it’s a great idea to bring a picnic to have in the park by the dam. On booking, organised groups can also arrange for sandwiches and fruit to be provided.

There is also the opportunity to visit on a day when there is no show booked and these conducted tours provide a great photo opportunity.

On offer is an interesting and informative tour with owner Dail or one of her staff. While you are there, take a stroll through their beautiful new grounds and enjoy a tea or coffee; you’ll gain an informal and fascinating insight into Parrots in Paradise.

Get up close and personal with the beautiful pheasants – also, if you are lucky, Whoppa will take the time to entertain you!

NERANG National Seniors meets every 4th Wednesday of the month @ 5.30pm. Our venue is at the ALL Sports Club, All Sports Drive, Nerang. We have interesting guest speakers & have monthly morning teas, including cards & scrabble. Also once a month a game of Petanque followed with a BBQ for those interested.

The branch arranges lunches on a regular basis as well as shows at the GC Arts Centre.

New Active and Healthy program out now

DID you know there are over 170 free and low-cost health-and-fitness activities on every week across the Gold Coast?

Mayor Tom Tate said the award winning Active and Healthy program has been getting thousands of residents up, out and active every week for several years; however, recent research revealed that many Gold Coasters aren’t aware of just how much is on offer.

“With the launch of the new program in July, we are keen to let as many residents as possible know about the activities on offer and how easy it is to get involved,” Mayor Tate said.

“The program’s emphasis is on energy and enjoyment. The activities are not only a fantastic way to increase wellbeing but they’re also a chance to

meet new people and have a lot of fun.

“It’s never too late to start being more active. If you’ve never been into fitness, or are worried about starting a fitness routine, just go along and see what Active and Healthy is all about.

You’re sure to be pleasantly surprised,” Mayor Tate said.

The Active and Healthy program features a new initiative this year. Health and wellbeing seminars will be held at various locations across the Gold Coast throughout the year and will feature local wellness warriors and fitness champions.

Palm Beach Happy Group HAPPY Group celebrated their 35th Birthday on the 12th July and the Share-n-Care Hall was packed to the Rafters with members some who had been regular attendees since the first meeting. A huge Birthday Cake was cut by Jo and Bill and enjoyed by everyone present. A lovely morning tea of hot pies, sausage rolls and chicken wings warmed everyone and nibbles and drinks on the tables were tasty too. The entertainment for the birthday was by “Remember When” and this talented duo certainly did get us all remembering the old songs and had the audience singing along with them. Daphne MacDonald the City Councillor was present and two invited guests from the Currumbin Happy Group, Mary Alexander and Pat Robson were also there. It was good to see many of the members from days gone by present and that included Gwen Hole a staunch driver and helper for many years. Doreen and Gordon Long made it for the party and it was great to see them also.

Entertainment during June included “Sundance” a group we all enjoy with their colourful dress and beautiful choice of song. A very talented group who we are always pleased to see coming back.

Kingscliff Mixed Probus Club THE Kingscliff Mixed Probus Club holds its meetings in the Uniting Church Hall, Kingscliff on the first Wednesday of the month at 10 am, and outings on the third Wednesday of each month. An Open Rehearsal for Seniors Week 2013 FEEL the power of being a part of an orchestra when Conductor, Mark Turpin, welcomes you to a rehearsal of the Gold Coast Philharmonic Orchestra on Thursday 22 August, 7.30pm to 9.30pm at the Gold Coast Youth Orchestra Centre, Community Drive, Ashmore. Guests will be seated beside the musicians, where they will be able to see the music, watch the conductor from “the other side” and view their favourite instruments being played up close, as the musicians prepare the repertoire for the Teddy Bears Picnic concert program.

Guests will then join the musicians for a luscious supper during the break (approx. 8.30pm) where you can chat and learn more about the music and instruments before returning to the rehearsal. There may even be an instrument for you to play and the conductor may let you have a go. Lots of fun and raffles to be won!

Age no barrier for these Gold Coast hoofers

By JIM BOWDEN THE Good Ship Lollypop girl Shirley Temple was five years old when she appeared in her first feature film at Paramount Studios in Hollywood after being discovered tapping and singing at a local dance school.

Gold Coast dancing tutor Judy Dungate’s hair certainly wasn’t in ringlets and she didn’t appear on the silver screen when she started dancing at the age of five. But the bubbly senior says she can still dance all night.

Gene Kelly said it right: “I wanna dance. I wanna dance!”

Judy, who moved to Coolangatta from Port Macquarie on the NSW mid-coast in December with her husband Michael, has been kept “enjoyably busy” teaching jazz ballet, tap-dancing and Latin exercise to an enthusiastic group of seniors at the University of Third Age studio at Tugun. U3A Twin Towns Inc caters for the physical wellbeing of seniors in the Gold Coast-Tweed area and offers a range of activities such as many forms of exercise, languages, art, history, literature, discussion groups – and dancing. Judy, who taught dancing at the Hastings Valley U3A in Port Macquarie, says her students didn’t find her – she found them.

“It’s been just great. The girls are absolutely embracing the dancing lessons and some of them haven’t danced before,” she said. “They love to costume up for the all-dancing, all singing routines.” Judy says her classes range from eight dancers to 20 at any one time, and they’re often on the floor for an hour or more.

“They’re in their 60s and 70s and one hoofer will be 83 this year. She’s terrific.”

publicly and will do shows if asked. They took part in NSW Seniors Week performances in March and they’re rehearsing for Seniors Week in Queensland, which will be held from August 17 to 25. Judy first found her ‘dancing legs’ when her mother introduced her to ice skating in Sydney. The rink eventually closed, so dancing was the next step for the five-yearold. “My mum and dad were both good dancers, and now my three daughters are into it,” Judy said. The energetic volunteer tutor uses her iPod to provide music for the dancing lessons, with different classes held three times a week. She will also be conducting classes at the Scout Hall in Coolangatta “so we can get some of the ladies from the Tweed region involved.”

Male dancing students? “Not so far,” says Judy. “But they’re welcome.”

She says the men have shown more interest in her husband Michael’s tai chi classes.

“But you never know,” she smiled.

“Gene Kelly might still be an inspiration.”

THE Springbrook Chamber of Commerce has transformed an old shack into a new visitors centre for Springbrook Mountain, a world-heritage listed National Park located in the southern end of the Gold Coast hinterland, some 1000m above sea level.

The project was funded by a concert

featuring Australian jazz great Vince Jones.

The centre is located opposite Wunburra Lookout on Springbrook Road. Improvements to the car parking area have also taken place and several Springbrook community groups have offered volunteers to resource the centre.

Tweed area Computer Club THE AGM was well attended and the new committee elected. Roslyn Brown, a representative from the Good Guys, gave an excellent overview of the Windows 8 operating system. The winner of the colour printer, donated by the Good Guys, was Lillian Toby. The winner of the Apple iPad was Patrice Hose.

The South Tweed Sports Club continues to provide support and provision of the meeting room and facility where the classes are held.

All who attended enjoyed the chance to catch up socially with the tutors and other students.

In addition to the iPad and Tablet for beginners classes on Wednesday and Friday at 1:30pm an advanced class has been introduced. This class, on Tuesdays at 3:00pm, is intended for those who have completed the beginner’s class and for those who have already been using these devices and would

like to increase their knowledge. In September an additional class will be started using Word, Excel and Publisher on Thursdays at 1:30pm.

The computer club is located in the South Tweed Sports Club 4 Minjungbal Drive South Tweed in a great air conditioned environment. Assistance is offered to people wishing to obtain their first computer with courses from absolute beginners to the more advanced.

The tutors work on a voluntary basis and get fulfillment from passing on their knowledge to help others using the PC’s and Apple Mac Minis. People can join at any time but if they require more direct information they can attend the next “sign on” day on Friday 30 August 2013 at 11:30pm. A VERY moving Confirmation ceremony was held in St.Cuthbert‘s Anglican Church, Tweed Heads on Sunday 7th July 2013. Bishop, The Right Reverend Dr. Doug Stevens BA, MPh, BTh (a former Parish Priest of St. Cuthbert’s) was Celebrant and Preacher for this traditional service assisted by Fr Kevin Bourke and Fr. John Reid supported by St.Cuthbert‘s Choir.

In excess of two hundred St.Cuthbert‘s parishioners, family and friends of candidates witnessed this impressive ceremony, the origin of which dates back many centuries.

Conlan, Miranda Golden, Will Griffiths and Anna Woods were confirmed in their baptismal promises and commissioned for active ministry in the Anglican Church by the laying on of hands.

Candidates acted as hosts for this service delivering Readings, presenting the Bread and Wine and Intercessions... We thank God for the ministry and witness of those confirmed today and we pray that God may continue to bless them in their endeavours to be faithful to his mission and purpose in the world. The service was followed by refreshments and fellowship in the Parish Centre.

Sewaholics Expo THE Gold Coast & Hinterland Region of the Australian Sewing Guild held its’ annual Sewaholics Expo at Albert Waterways Community Centre on 6th July. Over 100 people, all passionate about sewing were in attendance. Included in this number were 23 Guild members from all over Australia who were on a fabric buying tour in the Brisbane and Gold Coast area.

The show started with a fashion parade for “real” women by The Fabric Shop, Robina. This was followed by a series of presentations by four tutors specifically chosen for their individual passions. The presenters were Echidna Sewing Products sharing the latest embroidery machines by Brother, Martyn Smith on Secrets of Successful Interfacing, The Pattern Drafter by Maria Opresnik and our very own Louise Sparrow on Embellishing Techniques. Participants were divided into four groups, spending 45 minutes with each presenter.

“Christmas in July” was the theme of the day so the groups were named Miss Mistletoes, Christmas Belles, Christmas Stars and Santa’s Helpers.

Attendees also had the opportunity to enjoy a handson activity making a Christmas decoration from a zipper, some felt and ribbon. Add shopping opportunities to the list of activities and call it a very successful day. This is the third year we have held the Sewaholics Expo, and is the first year we had to turn people away because we were fully booked two months before the event.

The next event will be on Saturday 28th June 2014, and we suggest getting in early to secure a place.

The Guild is a national not-for-profit organisation for people who regard sewing as a creative and rewarding activity. Friendship and companionship • Independence go hand in hand with our groups.

HERE’S a quick, easy and healthy idea for a meal that can be eaten anytime.

This recipe for Sauté Mushrooms on Toast, courtesy of Australian Mushroom Growers, serves four and takes about 12 minutes to make.

Ingredients: 1 tbs olive oil; 400g button mushroom, thickly sliced; 1 tsp sweet paprika; 125g cherry tomatoes, halved; 1/3 cup coarselychopped flat-leaf parsley; 4 thick slices grain bread, toasted; 1 cup cottage cheese.

Preparation: Heat oil in a

non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms and paprika to the pan and cook, tossing, for 6-8 minutes or until mushrooms are light golden. Add the tomatoes and cook a further 3-4 minutes until tomatoes warmed through. Sprinkle with parsley; season with salt and pepper. Cover the toast with cottage cheese then spoon the mushroom mixture on top. Serve, and enjoy!

IT was ‘Lavender and Lace’ as Coolangatta Tweed VIEW Club celebrated its 23rd birthday in style at the South Tweed Sports Club. Inspired by the theme, not only did

In its 13th year the Expo is an event of the Tweed Shire Senior Citizens Committee in partnership with the Tweed Shire Council, Murwillumbah Seventh Day Adventist Church and the Tweed Valley Murwillumbah National Servicemen Sub-Branch.The event encourages a relaxed community environment that focuses on information exchange while people enjoy pleasant informal surrounds. The Expo provides many activities and workshops throughout the day and has a great Café serving food and beverages. Expo entry is $2. The aim of the day is to give seniors’ and the general community the opportunity to learn about available services for seniors’ in the region. The Expo aims to improve the quality of life through informing seniors’ about new products and equipment in a relaxed friendly atmosphere.The Expo day is scheduled

with many forums, talks and workshops and health assessments in one convenient location and provides a terrific opportunity to discover new recreational and social activities in the many free workshops. This year the Expo is honored to announce their special guest speaker. The Hon John Watkins M.A., L.LB., Dip Ed who is the current CEO of Alzheimers Australia NSW. This important organisation is involved in some of the major ageing and dementia challenges facing the New South Wales community over the coming years and Mr Watkins will provide an important and interesting contribution to the Expos success. VIEW (Voice, Interest and Education of Women), a valued partner of The Smith Family, works to provide a hand-up, rather than a hand-out, for disadvantaged children through the Club’s support of the Learning for Life programmes.

Taking the worry out of medication management IT is surprisingly easy to not remember whether you have done something. Most of us experience this feeling every day, but this can be life threatening if the “something” happens to be your daily prescribed medication.

When I raise this with my Mum her comment is,”I like to be in control of my medications”. The key to saving lions

GIVE them land, lots of land under starry skies above - then fence them in.

That is the way to save Africa’s wild lion population from near extinction, according to an international team of conservationists writing in the latest edition of Ecology Letters.

The team, including Australian researchers, says wild populations of African lion could decline to near extinction levels during the next 20-40 years.

However their work shows in fenced reserves in southern African, such as Kruger National Park, populations of lions are expected to remain at their potential capacity for the next 100 years.

Co-author Professor Stephen Garnett, an expert in conservation management at Charles Darwin University admits the idea of fencing large African reserves runs counter to a long-standing conservation practices.

These practices encourage human-wildlife coexistence through conflict-mitigation programs, compensation schemes or payments for tolerance.

However he says rapid growth in human populations in Africa is putting increased pressure on the traditional ranges of wildlife taking conservation to “a completely new situation”.

Dianne and Mike Cecil are pictured at The Arts Centre – Gold Coast where they both volunteer on the reception desk once a month, something Dianne has being doing for five years and Mike for the past three years.

THE idea of teaching art on a cruise ship sailing across the North Atlantic might sound an impossible dream for many retirees but not for Dianne Cecil.

Dianne, originally from Ipswich, and husband Mike live “a lifestyle” retirement on 60 pictur-

esque acres in the Gold Coast hinterland, a property Mike called home as a boy. Before retirement in 2002 Dianne was a schoolteacher who had “taught forever”, she laughingly added. Mike initially was an instrument fitter in the Australian Air Force and then spent 20 years with

the Queensland Department of Primary Industries, specialising in beef breeding.

Keen travellers not averse to spending the kids’ inheritance while they have the chance, it was during a 2006 Baltic region trip on the MS Queen Victoria that Dianne noted that art lessons were being offered to interested passengers, a fact she stored away for future reference.

On return to Australia, Dianne began part-time studies for a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in painting and drawing. She was awarded her degree from Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, in 2012.

Not long afterwards, while surfing the internet, Dianne found a position opening where she would be able to combine her teaching diploma, Fine Arts degree and love of travel.

It was an experience she “thoroughly enjoyed”, particularly too because when she was not teaching, Dianne and Mike were able to make the most of all that was on offer on the ship (launched only a few months previously), “and there was a lot available”.

So what’s next on the agenda? Upcoming travels—one trip a cruise up the Alaskan Inside Passage and another a South African land tour out of Johannesburg that will include Kruger National Park, Durban and Cape Town—won’t see Dianne as a Guest Presenter but that’s not to say that she won’t consider the role again in the future. Life is what you make it and Dianne and Mike are making it the best they can.

Professor James Vaupel of the University of Southern Denmark believes no one should work more than 25 hours per week, but that we should keep working until the age of 80.

“We’re getting older and older here in Denmark. Kids who are 10 years old today should be able to work until the age of 80,” Professor Vaupel told website Science Nordic.

“In return, they won’t need to work more than 25 hours per week when they become adults.”

Professor Vaupel, a leading scientist in ageing research at the University of Southern Denmark, suggested that what is important is that people put in a certain amount of work, not that they work at a specific point in life.

Shorter working weeks, Professor Vaupel argues, would give young people more time to care for their families, exercise and lead healthier lives.

“The way it is today, young people are slaving their way through work, looking forward to a long retirement,” Professor Vaupel explains. “But why not move that retirement period around a bit so that young people get more valuable time off work?”

He argues part-time work later in life would improve the general health of the elderly. “The benefits are not just psychological because being an active part of society makes people feel good about themselves, but also physically, since you use both your brain and your body when you’re working.

“We know that elderly people are prepared to continue working if they’re capable of doing so,” he says.

“And I’m guessing young people would prefer to work less while they’re young if they have the option of working more when they get older.”

Last year he received an Emergency Service Medal for outstanding service and in 2000 was presented with a Federation Medal for Services to Marine Rescue.

“There is tremendous satisfaction gained from ensuring people get back to land safely and we have never had a fatality when we’ve received a call-out,” he said. “It gets in your blood, that feeling that you’re doing something really worthwhile for the community.

The area continues to have one of the best marine rescue services on the east coast. We have had so many dedicated volunteers over the years, providing a highly efficient service which has been a great assurance for local people and visitors to the area.”

BERNARD ‘Bernie’ Gabriel has dedicated 50 years of his life to protecting boaties, recently retiring as head of Marine Rescue Point Danger.

The 78-year-old handed over the reins as the service’s Unit Commander, half a century after playing a leading role in creating the volunteer organisation.

As a skipper for more than 20 years, Mr Gabriel has taken part in many rescue operations, particularly on the hazardous Tweed River bar, and assisted countless skippers who found themselves in trouble on the water.

He also held the position of Chief Controller for more than 11 years; Chief Training Officer and Vice President of Air Sea Rescue for 14 years. Mr Gabriel has been the Unit Commander of Marine Rescue Point Danger for three years and is a Life Member of Marine Rescue NSW. Mr Gabriel will continue to play a special role with
