Tweed Men’s Shed a Winner

“THE best thing to happen in The Tweed” is the heartfelt sentiment expressed by many about the Tweed Heads Community Men’s Shed, which opened late last year after much enthusiastic interest. Tweed Shire Council got the group off to a positive start by allocating a spare shed but, as welcome as the shed has been, it has proved too small. With much-appreciated assistance from State Member for Tweed Geoff Provest, funding has now been secured to expand. Martin Kinross is the coordinator and safety officer of the not-for-profit Tweed Heads Community

Men’s Shed, located at 4 Park Street and open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am. Martin explains the importance of aiming for a five-day-a-week operation in larger premises. “The purpose behind the Shed is to advance the health and wellbeing of our members by providing a safe and happy environment where skilled and unskilled men can pursue hobbies and interests, learn new skills, pass on old skills, mentor younger men, socialise, and learn about their own health and wellbeing while contributing to their families, the Shed and their community. SENIORS NEWS Tweed Men’s Shed a Winner Continued from Page 1 “As well,” Martin continues, “the Shed assists other community organisations where possible and for free, although we are grateful for any monetary support from the public as we rely solely on government funding and grants; donations or bequests of tools and supplies, and our own fundraising efforts. “We work with Tweed Palliative Care to repair equipment such as walkers and wheelchairs. We help adjoining community groups such as the Police and Citizens Youth Club, day care centres and the kindergarten in making fences and gates secure, mowing lawns, making toys and many ongoing jobs. We’re helping the Blind Society build an office. We also focus on Men’s Health Week, Disability Week, Child Protection Week and similar.

“Members can bring in their own projects if they wish but the majority come along to socialise; to brighten up their days while helping others. Fees are kept to a minimum so as not to discourage anyone.” Ernie is a retired ambulance officer born in 1930 in the Tweed area. Now a highly-respected and keen Shed member, Ernie said, “I have seen men waste away after retirement with nothing for them to do. This Shed is the best thing to happen in Tweed in my lifetime.” The Shed sincerely thanks Tweed Shire Council, Mayor Barry Longland, Justine Elliot MP, Geoff Provest MP and Matthew Fraser; Tweed Heads Bowls Club, and local retailers and residents for their ongoing interest and support. THE Seniors Week International Café held in August was what could only be described as an international success, with music, song and dance reflecting many parts of the globe bringing delight to hundreds of seniors who filled Robina Community Centre Auditorium. Presented by Multicultural Communities Council Gold Coast (MCCGC), the free Café also offered morning tea and lunch as well as a wide-ranging exhibition of services for seniors, including health checks. Opening the occasion after acknowledgment of the Traditional Land Owners was an artistic presentation by four Australian Aboriginal singers and dancers who included didgeridoo and clap sticks in their performance as well as a theatrical display of fire making.

lives may be shortened. This research is supported by studies such as that into the Health of the Stolen Generations. Some parents deny any relationship between their children and their grandparents for personal reasons, using their children as pawns in the dispute. These may include emotional blackmail for financial gain, retaliation, vindictiveness, mental health issues or a personality dislike. Secrecy is a welldocumented tool of Abusers. In other cases separation of the parents in cross-cultural or crossreligious marriages results

in denial of any relationship with the noncustodial relatives. In others, Child Safety authorities who have placed children in the care of the grandparents, subsequently deny that relationship when attempting to re-establish relations between the parent and child. Retirees lose out on Government Concessions MANY retirees are missing out on government concessions and benefits. In many instances retirees are simply not aware of their eligibility for government benefits or assume they have too much money to benefit from these concessions. To address this issue the Baby Boomers Group of Australians in Retirement will be hosting a meeting with Centrelink Financial Information Service Officer, Russell Lenehan. At the meeting Russell will detail not only retirees eligibility for Age Pensions and other Allowances, but also the range of discounts and benefits that many retirees are missing out on. The indexation of benefit thresholds means retirees with just over $1 million may still obtain a part pension. While the pension itself may be small, the associated benefits such as discounts on rates, public transport, electricity, pharmaceutical products and medical services and car registration can amount to hundreds of dollars a year. Mr Rob Grover, Gold Coast President of Australians in Retirement, said: “Some of our members are not

receiving discounts and benefits because they are not aware of their eligibility. Having paid taxes throughout our working lives, it would be such a shame if retirees were missing out on discounts and benefits that are available to them.” The AIR Baby Boomers meeting will be held at 9:30am on Wednesday 11th September at the Broadbeach Seniors’ Centre, 23 T E Peters Drive,

(cnr Havana Keys), Broadbeach. Any guests wishing to attend should register with Rob Grover at robgrover@hotmail.com or 0417 732 242. Australians in Retirement is the trading name of The Association of Independent Retirees, the peak body representing the interests of retirees who are self funded or in receipt of a part pension. SENIORS NEWS Mr. Property Services – New sales record achieved!! MR Property Services is pleased to announce that with a further 9 home sales during the last quarter of the 2012/2013 financial year we have achieved our new all-time record of 42 completed sales during a financial year. A recent survey of home buyers and sellers

completed by HomeGain.com, a real estate services website, revealed that 76% of home owners believe their home is worth more than the list price recommended by their real estate agent. Homebuyers look at a lot of new properties on the market. They make offers, know what sells quickly

and for how much, and what doesn’t and why. Unfortunately your home is worth what a Buyer is prepared to pay for it given current market conditions. This may not be the same as your opinion or ours, or what you hope it’s worth. Relying on emotion rather than logic when setting

the advertised price for your home can lead to disappointing results. Mr. Property Services provides a professional and dedicated service to ‘Buyers’ and ‘Sellers’ of manufactured and relocatable homes located in Lifestyle Villages and Residential Parks in the Tweed Valley and the southern tip of the Queensland Gold Coast. Mr. Property Services’ primary goal is to provide “a home for every budget”, and has the

most extensive range of homes at Lifestyle villages and Residential parks in the Tweed Valley. Mr. Property Services has over 50 homes ranging from $28,000 to $325,000 located at 12 Lifestyle villages and Residential parks, “we are confident that we will have a home for you!” Please contact Kelvin Price at 139 Minjungbal Drive, Tweed Heads South NSW 2486. SENIORS NEWS Don’t give car thieves a chance

IF your car was manufactured before 2001, it’s more likely to be the target of theft. With research showing that immobilisers are the best protection against car theft, the City of Gold Coast has partnered with the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council and RACQ Insurance to give away 100 engine immobilisers. Divisional Councillor Greg Betts said the initiative was part of Operation Bounce Back, an annual community education and car theft reduction program. “By making it harder for car thieves to operate, we’re working to make our suburbs safer,” Cr Betts said. “Through Operation Bounce Back, residents have the opportunity to receive a voucher for a free car immobiliser, installed by a locally approved installer.” Immobilisers interrupt the power supply required to start a vehicle unless the correct ignition key signal is used. Each unit is worth $200 each and the prize includes free installation at a local automotive supplier. The cost is met by the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council. RACQ Insurance research has found the emergence of an alarming new

trend in vehicle theft with thieves now targeting cars parked at homes. Almost a quarter (22 per cent) of Queensland motorists had their car stolen from the home driveway, followed by 18 per cent from on the street of the residence and five per cent from the home garage. Tips to keep your car safe include: always lock your vehicle, even when parked on your property; if you have an older vehicle install an engine immobiliserand do not leave valuables visible in your vehicle; do not leave your keys in an unsecured location and always close your windows. To enter, residents must own a vehicle manufactured before 2001 that does not already have an immobilising device fitted. Email your name, phone number, address, vehicle make, model, and year of manufacture to communitysafety@goldcoast.qld.gov.au or telephone 07 5581 6603. The draw closes at 4pm on Friday 20 September 2013 (only one entry per household). For more information on the draw and car safe tips, visit cityofgoldcoast.com.au/cartheft. If you are the victim of motor vehicle theft, please contact local police.

Why do women end up ‘poorer’ in retirement? WOMEN retire with substantially less savings than men, even if they don’t have children or care for elderly parents and stay in full time work, according to a new report. The research paper, ‘What’s choice got to do with it?’ by Prue Cameron for Canberra based The Australia Institute, says women retire with only 59 per cent of super at retirement age compared to men. The analysis uses hypothetical examples to illustrate how the life course and work

patterns of four different women – a nurse, lawyer, finance analyst and a retail worker – will likely impact on their superannuation earnings. “We found that these four women were earning between 44 per cent and 88 per cent of the superannuation of a male of the same age earning the average wage,” Ms Cameron said. The report shows that a woman working in commerce, with no children and who doesn’t need to care for elderly parents, still ends up with about nine

per cent less superannuation than the average male on retirement. Meanwhile, a woman who works in retail all her life, who has two children and cares for her elderly parents, will retire with less than half of the retirement savings of an average male of the same age. “The reality is that most often choice doesn’t come into it. The fact that women continue to earn, on average, 17.6 per cent less than men is not a result of their choices. Nor is the fact that many women continue to be the

primary carers simply a matter of individual preference, but the consequence is that women end up poorer. “The uncomfortable facts are that women earn less than men and spend more time out of the workforce caring for children and elderly parents. All of these facts ensure that women will retire with less money than men and, bizarrely, receive far fewer taxpayer contributions to their superannuation than men.” The full report is available on The Australia Institute website: www.tai.org.au.

What happens to the stamps ABM supporters donate? ABM is pleased to receive stamps all year round from across the

country. For many years we have been accepting used postage stamps as part of our fundraising. Today this practice continues with our loyal supporters from different dioceses and parishes sending us stamps on a regular basis. Sister Rosamund, from the Community of the Sister of the Church, is a philatelist and collects the stamps from our office every two weeks. She takes them back to her convent where she and the rest of the Sisters sort through, clean and select the ones that may be valuable and are in a good enough condition to be sold at auction. The stamp auction takes place twice a year and the balance of the stamps are sold to agents in 2-5kg lots to

be used in “mission mixture packs”. Sister Rosamund receives a cheque for the auction and sales, which she passes on the ABM. In 2010 ABM sold 45 lots of stamps and received $18,786,68, in 2011 we sold 41 lots and received $9.477.75 and in 2012 we sold 36 lots and received $10,174.00. Christopher Brooks, acting Communication and Fundraising Manager said, “We are so pleased to receive this money from the stamps that our loyal supporters offer us.” “Unfortunately, it is not possible for ABM to ascertain individual

prices for collections. The main difficult arises when several collections are sold in one lot as the auction house does not give a breakdown of each collection.” “It is quite amazing that over $38,000 can be raised in three years from the donation of used stamps. We thank everyone for their donations which raises money that supports our work in mission,” he said. You can send your used stamps to ABM, Locked Bag Q4005, Queen Victoria Building NSW 1230. Gold Coast beaches remain top priority under new strategy

THE City of Gold Coast’s ongoing commitment to protecting and managing the city’s iconic beaches has been given a further boost, as the Council recently endorsed its Ocean Beaches Strategy. The new strategy, developed through widespread community consultation, sets out a clear framework for maintaining, protecting and enhancing our ocean beaches now and into the future. It reflects the City’s long history of working to protect and maintain our valuable coastline. A number of projects are currently underway up and down the coast, including the City’s Three Point Plan for Coastal Protection to address current coastal erosion, beach nourishment works, the Palm Beach Shoreline Project, seawall construction and the reinstatement of KirraGroyne. Mayor Tom Tate says the Council’s endorsement of the new strategy is another important step in ensuring our beaches continue to be one of the City’s top priorities. “Our ocean beaches are the city’s

most precious asset, the key to its identity, character and liveability. They’re loved by both Gold Coasters and 11.5 million visitors each year, worth $7.5 billion to our local economy through tourism and surfing, he said. “Although the Strategy is new, the City’s work is ongoing to make sure everyone can continue to enjoy our beaches, that they remain safe, healthy and clean, and that we help protect the City’s infrastructure from erosion and coastal hazards. “Our beaches are everyone’s responsibility. We all need to play our part in taking care of them, and their future is an issue not only for the City of Gold Coast and the local community, but for State and Commonwealth governments too. The City currently spends an estimated $18.6 million of its total budget on our ocean beaches. $10.6 million is spent on coastal management and $8 million provides a professional lifeguard service to maintain safety on beaches. SENIORS NEWS Men – get informed about prostate cancer

CANCER Council Queensland is calling on all Queensland men to get informed about the state’s most common male can-

cer* this September – Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in

Queensland men* and the second most common cause of Queensland male cancer death .Around 3700 men are diagnosed

with prostate cancer each year in Queensland – about 1300 in Brisbane alone. Around 210 local men die from the disease each year. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said it was important that all Queensland men understood their individual risk of prostate cancer. “It’s important all Queensland men understand their personal risk of prostate cancer, and are well-informed about the pros and cons of testing,” Ms Clift said. “Prostate cancer is more common in older men and those with a family history of the disease. “There is currently no single, simple test to detect prostate cancer. It’s important that men discuss their risk and the options available with a GP. “Our Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20, staffed by fully trained professionals, is available Monday to Friday for more information about prostate cancer or to discuss being tested for prostate cancer. “We have also recently updated our prostate cancer information page at cancerqld.org.au – check it out under the Early Detection tab for the latest information available.” Recent CCQ and Griffith

University research also showed many Queensland men distressed by prostate cancer don’t access the psychological support they need to cope. “Up to onethird of all cancer patients experience clinically significant distress,” Ms Clift said. “It’s important that Queensland men distressed by a prostate cancer diagnosis are supported to seek the help they need. “Our Cancer Council Helpline 13 11 20 provides referrals to our statewide no-cost Cancer Counselling Service, which can assist men and their families coping with a prostate cancer diagnosis.”Cancer Council Queensland is asking all men this September to take control of their health, and identify simple changes to lead healthier lifestyles and help reduce overall cancer risk. Paper Tole 3D art popular Show exhibit

Sue Mason is pictured at the 2013 Gold Coast Show surrounded by paper tole artworks created by both Sue and her students.

SUE Mason was happy to chat with passersby about paper tole (also known as papertole) 3D art, or decoupage, at the recent Gold Coast Show. Basically, paper tole involves cutting-out and layering sections of identical prints to create original 3D pictures, although several more steps are required to achieve completed ‘masterpieces’. Sue has enjoyed the craft for some 14 years, while it is said that paper tole originated in France during the 17th century. Anyone wishing more information about paper tole is welcome to phone Sue on 5519 4941 or 0411 091 567.

Retire young at RSL Care communities in the GC & Tweed WITH the average lifeexpectancy in Australia now in the mid-eighties, retirement at sixty is not as common as it used to be. Fortunately, at RSL Cares Independent Retirement Living communities at Banora Point and Currumbin, you can ‘retire young’. Retirement Living Consultant Liz Semionov said the communities offers a range of independent and low-maintenance homes to cater to a range of tastes and budgets, while its equally broad range of social committees and community facilities enable residents to be as active as they wish. “Retirement living is not about retiring from life. It’s about doing what you want to do and when, and having the freedom and choice to do so. Our residents enjoy active social lives with neighbours who become friends and friends who become family. It’s a true sense of community and comrade that has become synonymous with RSL Care,” Mrs Semionov said. “A sense of RSL Care Independent Living Communities is further enhanced by residents who generously donate time to volunteer in RSL Care’s residential care communities (located in the same grounds as its retirement living communities) and by other residents who participate in charity benefits and causes. “And, if or when care

needs change, our residents take comfort in knowing that RSL HomeCare services are available throughout our communities, enabling residents to remain independent in their own homes for as long as possible. “Choosing what to do and when is one of the

many benefits of retirement living; knowing that it is accessible, affordable and that needs can be catered for as they change are some of the benefits of retirement with RSL Care.” For more information visit: www.retirerslcare.com.au or phone 1800 558 648

Older investors suffer when advisers go belly-up

FAILED financial advisers often with lapsed professional indemnity insurance are devastating the retirement plans of older Australians, consumer lobby group for the over 50s, National Seniors Australia says. And to add insult to injury, the investors – many of them with Self Managed Super Funds (SMSFs) – are unlikely to get their money back because they cannot sue the principals of the failed businesses, according to a report in The Australian newspaper today. The report said that Australian Financial Services and AFS Group had elderly clients with SMSFs containing hundreds of thousands of dollars in “inappropriate” i n v e s t m e n t s recommended by AFS authorised representatives. National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said that retirees’ savings already hit hard by the GFC remained vulnerable

to further losses unless the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) took a tougher approach. “Some financial advisers are taking advantage of trusting and inexperienced retirees and frankly giving the rest of the industry a bad name,” O’Neill said. “What retirees and people approaching retirement want is assurance and meaningful protection to make advisers accountable and the regulations that govern them more enforceable. “ASIC also needs to be accountable for the role it has in creating a fair environment especially for inexperienced investors.” All investors, including SMSF trustees, should ensure the advice they receive includes information about the adviser’s insurance and how they can insure their own investment, he said. Earlier this year, National Seniors released a report

showing that investors’ knowledge had not kept pace with the growing number and complexity of financial products over the last 20 years. “Many were too embarrassed to talk to their financial advisers for fear of being judged negatively,” Mr O’Neill said. “The federal government needs to act now – not only to encourage people to become better informed and more aware of the risks associated with investing, but also to ensure that financial advisers are better regulated.” Media release: National Seniors

New report shows older people working longer NATIONAL Seniors Australia has welcomed a new report which shows a significant increase in the number of people remaining in the workforce for longer. The biennial Australia’s welfare report for 2013 published by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) released recently has found that labour force participation rates have been rising significantly. In the past decade, labour force participation rates for men aged 60–64 rose considerably from 48% in 2002 to 63% in 2012. For men aged 65–69, the rise was from 20% to 34%. Among women aged 60– 64, participation rates rose from 25% in 2002 to 44% in 2012. For women aged 65–69, the rise was from 9% to 20%. National Seniors chief

executive Michael O’Neill said there were a number of reasons why older Australians were choosing to work past retirement age. “It’s a sign of the times that people are staying in the workforce for longer,” O’Neill said. “One reason is that older Australians are much healthier than they used to be so many want to remain in employment,” he said. “But another factor is that a significant number were hit hard by the Global Financial Crisis so some are being forced to remain in the workforce to recoup what they lost during that GFC period. “Others are also struggling with the cost of living and worrying if their superannuation will be enough for when they retire.” O’Neill also highlighted that Australian workforce participation

rates could be higher. “We know that age discrimination in employment continues to be the main barrier for older Australians who are looking for work.” “If Australia had the same mature-age participation as New Zealand, our GDP would be 4 per cent higher.” The report also found that in 2012, just over half (53%) of employed people aged 65 and over worked part time, with women more likely to do so than men (69% compared with 45%). The report coincides with the government’s economic statement last week which showed the Commonwealth would save $600 million on the pension over the next four years because people were working for longer instead of claiming benefits. An Advanced Care Directive allows you to share your end of life plan with your chosen doctor, hospital, family or carer. Care Directive now while you are of sound mind and body can save your loved ones a lot of heartache later on. It can be very difficult for family members to make decisions in the heat of the moment, and if two family members disagree about the best course of treatment, then knowing your wishes could help to avoid a family rift. A Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record allows your medical history to be accessed by authorised doctors and hospitals. This can be especially useful if you become sick or injured while travelling, as the institution in which you are being treated will not have to get your records sent through – they will have instant access to the information. By including an Advanced Care Directive in your Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record you are ensuring that, if you become incapacitated, hospitals and your loved ones will still be able to access your wishes regarding end-of-life treatment. You can set up a Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record at www.ehealth.gov.au. The ability to include an Advanced Care Directive will become available shortly, so keep an eye out. Don’t ignore possible fire risks ELECTRICAL fires caused by Queenslanders leaving devices on after they leave the house are now one of the most common types of home fire, according to new research by leading insurer RACQ. “Many Queenslanders don’t realise, or are ignoring, the risks of unattended electrical appliances,” said Mike Sopinski RACQ Executive Manager Insurance Communications. “There is awareness about the risks of leaving heaters on but many householders leave other appliances running all day while they are out, creating potentially dangerous fire hazards,” MrSopinski said. According to the RACQ Insurance research, in Queensland last year 15 per cent of home fires were caused by electrical equipment. “RACQ research shows more than half of all householders leave printers and routers etc on while away from the home (55 per cent), followed by computers (52 per cent), washing machines (50 per cent) and mobile phone chargers (44 per cent). The research showed even kitchen stoves and electric blankets were being left on while unattended,” MrSopinski said. “It’s not uncommon to observe mobile phone chargers left permanently on, but we are reminding people that they should be at home when these appliances are running in case of a fire,” MrSopinski said.

SENIORS NEWS Fake Commonwealth Government officer phone scam

THE Office of Fair Trading is warning Queenslanders to hang up on phone based scammers following reports of a fake Commonwealth Government officer cold calling people and offering money if they call a phone number from the Canberra area. Fair Trading Executive Director, Brian Bauer, said no government agency would ever contact consumers to offer money, and people should simply hang up on these types of calls. “The Office of Fair Trading recently received a report about a phone based scammer claiming to be from a government department in Canberra,” Mr Bauer said. “The caller tells consumers they can obtain a $7000 cheque for having no infringements against their name if they call a Canberra phone number. “One consumer was informed that this practice is a government initiative which runs every five years for 100 people. “Fortunately the consumer smelled a rat and did not pursue the offer.” If you receive a phone call or an email from a government agency claiming you are entitled to a refund or some other benefit, never provide your personal details. Remember, scammers can obtain your number from legitimate sources. Even if your number is not publicly listed or on the Do Not Call Register, scammers can be very resourceful and often sound very convincing with their pitch. If in doubt simply hang up and contact the Office of Fair Trading on 13QGOV (13 74 68). For the latest scam information visit www.scamwatch.gov.au or call 1300 795 995.

Labrador Senior Citizens Open Day THE Labrador Senior Citizens’ Centre (LSCC) hosted a free open day on 17th August in a drive to increase its club membership, which is open to all over 50’s on the Gold Coast. The LSCC, which was founded in 1971 by a small group of locals, has now grown to include more than 500 members who enjoy a range of regular sporting and social activities free of charge or for a small fee. The Centre’s open day, which was officiated by Councillor Margaret Grummitt included a morning tea. LSCC Co-Founder Gary Doornbos said the open day was a great success and was an opportunity for seniors to experience what the centre had to offer and meet other likeminded people.

“The reason our centre is already so popular is that we have a really diverse group of people and a great array of activities. We have people aged from 50 up who are from all walks of life, and everyone is really welcoming - whether you are new to the area or a long term local,” he said. “We also have a whole range of activities and events that operate five days per week, including live concerts, lawn bowls, table tennis, coach trips, tai chi and much more, so there’s something to suit all types - from those who like to relax through to the more adventurous at heart. “We already have quite a large membership base but we are always happy to welcome new faces. I

Card players (L) Joseph Zee and Robert Yewen

think many seniors don’t even realise that this facility is open and available to them. It’s a great way for people to widen their social circle and make long and lasting friendships, which is

important - particularly for those who may have family who have moved away or are living on their own. “Annual membership is only $7 and most of our activities are free or just a gold coin donation, so

it’s affordable and accessible fun for all.” The LSCC is located at 370 Marine Parade, Labrador. For more information, please contact Megan Shirley on 07 5537 1433.

Bitumen bandits spotted on the Gold Coast

THE Office of Fair Trading is warning Gold Coast residents of a group of bitumen bandits reported to be operating in the area. Residents are urged to be wary if approached by traders offering bitumen laying or other home maintenance in return for upfront cash payment. Bitumen bandits perform substandard work using watered-down materials and often leave without completing the job. It is illegal for door-to-door traders to take any upfront payments or deposits for services valued at more than $100. Door-to-door traders must leave your premises immediately if asked to do so. Consumers must be given a 10 business day coolingoff period and be provided with documentation to enable them to cancel the contract at any stage during this period. relief for the aforementioned conditions. How it works: FS 6 uses Patent Pending Compression Zones to lift the plantar Fascia and move excess fluids and blood out of the foot and heel to reduce swelling and pain. FS 6 keeps the Plantar Fascia ligaments gently stretched whilst increasing blood flow to damaged tissues in the foot and heel, resulting in less pain and inflammation. FS 6 has 6 zones of compression built into each sleeve that supports foot structure and increases blood flow needed for healing. FS6 Compression Foot Sleeves compress the ankle and foot to help relieve the painful symptoms of plantar fasciitis. Unlike bulky and expensive “night

splints,” the sleeves slip on easily, providing varying compression zones to reduce inflammation, increase circulation, and support healing. The lightweight sleeves can be worn while sleeping to reduce morning heel pain or during the day, under socks for continuous support, relief and protection. The sleeves gently lift the plantar fascia ligament, and loosen as the foot as it widens for non-binding comfort. The front portion is closed with a wide, smooth knitted hem. The thinner circle of material in the instep minimizes bunching at the top of the foot while stabilizing the heel, which is centered inside a deep heel pocket. The FS6 maintains compression above the ankle and the collar at the top

is smooth without ridges. The sleeves’ ultra-soft micro-nylon, with Lycra Fresh FX construction allows your skin to breathe and stay comfortably dry. Available in Sizes S/M (arch circumference 7-9 1/2", Men’s shoe size 69 1/2; women’s 7-10 1/2) and L/XL (arch 10-13", men’s 10-14; women’s 11 and up). SENIORS are angry and disgusted at news of a new tax slug on bank deposits, consumer group for the over 50s, National Seniors Australia says. The levy imposed on deposits up to $250,000 from 1 January 2016, will further undermine the efforts of older people struggling to remain independent and less reliant on government benefits, National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said. The 0.05 per cent tax would directly penalise older Australians who chose to rely on savings for their retirement income. “Clearly, banks and other financial institutions will pass on the cost and it will be savers who are penalised,” O’Neill said. “Already older Australians who rely on term deposits and cash components of super funds are struggling because of the reduction in interest rates. This is one more blow.” Data from financial services watchdog, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), shows that 45.3 per cent of bank and financial institution term deposits belong to investors aged 65 or older. The measure also makes a mockery of the government’s move to provide certainty in the area of superannuation, O’Neill said. “Policy on the run to fill a hole in budget forecasts is not a foundation for certainty,” he said. “And imposing the tax on deposits under $250,000 may spread the tax load but it also unfairly penalises those least able to afford it.” Media release: National Seniors

Consumers quick to lodge electricity and water complaints on-line CONSUMERS with complaints about their electricity and water services have been quick to take up a new online complaint and information service launched by the Energy and Water Ombudsman Queensland. Since the launch of the Energy and Water complaints website on 1 July, 1,446 consumers have gone on to visit the Energy and Water Ombudsman Queensland website for more information or to lodge a complaint. “Our figures show that in the month since the complaints website was introduced, we have experienced a 33 per cent increase in complaints lodged with us on-line,” said Energy and Water Ombudsman Forbes Smith. The Energy and Water Ombudsman Queensland (EWOQ) is one of several agencies to develop the website, which has been designed to help consumers navigate the range of independent complaint agencies with different roles, responsibilities and powers.

“Electricity and water bills can be confusing at the best of times but when you have a problem, it is often even more confusing knowing where to turn for help,” says Mr Smith. “The introduction of our complaints website enables consumers to quickly and easily get in contact with the appropriate authority to lodge their complaint and get help. “The website takes the user through a few simple questions before providing a direct link to the relevant authority’s website. In some cases, such as EWOQ, a complaint can then be lodged on-line.” “Hopefully as a result of the complaints website, even more Queenslander’s will take advantage of our free dispute resolution services and receive help with their energy and water issues.” The Energy and Water Ombudsman Queensland provides free, fair and independent dispute resolution services to consumers unable to resolve a complaint with their electricity or gas supplier

in Queensland or water supplier in south-east Queensland. “We can help explain bills, negotiate with suppliers on behalf of people who are finding it hard to pay their bills, review extension of electricity supply arrangements, assist in arranging payment plans and help people who may have issues

with connection delays or those facing disconnection or restriction,” said Mr Smith. If you have a concern relating to your energy or water services, visit w w w. e n e r g y w a t e r complaints.com.au and follow the wizard to determine who you should contact to seek assistance.

SENIORS NEWS Quilt Exhibition draws crowds to Arts Centre

THEY came, they saw and they made it yet another ultra-successful Quilt Exhibition. Arguably one of the biggest exhibit drawcards at The Arts Centre on Bundall Road, Surfers Paradise, the three-week long 2013 Gold Coast Quilters Guild Quilt Exhibition had over 100 quality quilts on display during August, the quilts expertly crafted by Guild members. Based on 2011 figures, it is estimated that over 4000 patrons strolled through the colourful maze of hanging quilts, enjoying all that was on offer at this popular biennial show that began in 2001. The Gold Coast Quilters Guild, this year celebrating its 25th anniversary, is a non-profit organisation with membership open to anyone with an interest in quilting. Newcomers to quilting are welcome. Superfood broccoli helps fight ageing

A SUPERFOOD broccoli developed by British scientists retunes metabolism to combat the effects of ageing. The vegetable, sold under the brand name Beneforte, contains boosted levels of a plant compound believed to protect against heart disease and cancer. Scientists who tested it on volunteers saw metabolic changes. Tiny energy generators in cells called mitochondria, which become less efficient with age, were given a new lease of life and had their performance improved. Eating the broccoli helped reverse mitochondrial malfunctions that contribute to problems such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer. Beneforte was created using conventional breeding techniques by crossing conventional broccoli with a wild Italian variety that has naturally high levels of glucoraphanin. It contains two to three times more of the compound than ordinary broccoli and much higher levels than other ‘cruciferous’ vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, kale and cauliflower. The findings underlined the health benefits of eating cruciferous vegetables in general, although Beneforte showed the most striking effect, said the team led by Professor Richard Mithen from the Institute of Food Research. Writing in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition the researchers conclude: ‘A diet rich in cruciferous vegetables effectively retunes our metabolism.. In this manner, cruciferous vegetables may be able to reduce the risk of many chronic diseases associated with ageing.’ The scientists recruited 48 volunteers who were split into three groups and ate 400 grams a week of either Beneforte, standard broccoli, or peas for three months. Blood tests showed clear signs of improved metabolism in the highglucoraphaninBeneforte group. In particular, two biochemical processes vital to mitochondrial function were ‘rebalanced’. People in the Beneforte group also had reduced levels of compounds linked to inflammation in their blood. A compound called sulphoraphane, which is derived from glucoraphanin, is known to promote antioxidant activity in cells. This has the effect of clearing away destructive oxygen molecules that can disrupt mitochondrial machinery, experts believe. ‘Although this is a pilot study, we think it is significant because it shows in humans a measurable effect on our metabolism, which is central to our overall health and could explain the diverse range of beneficial effects many observational dietary studies have shown previously,’ said Prof Mithen. EVERY day in Australia, around 50 women are diagnosed with breast or a gynaecological cancer. This is why Australians come together each October to show their support for Cancer Council through Pink Ribbon Day, Girls’ Night In and other Pink Ribbon Fundraisers. “A diagnosis of breast or gynaecological cancer can be a traumatic experience that can severely disrupt a woman’s family and working life, however cancer outcomes for many women are improving,” said Cancer Council Australia’s CEO Professor Ian Olver. “By participating in Pink Ribbon Day or a Pink Ribbon Fundraiser, the public can help Cancer Council provide support services to improve the quality of life for those affected by women’s cancers, along with research into potential new treatments and prevention measures.” Throughout October you can show your support by registering to sell merchandise, hold a Pink Ribbon Fundraiser, volunteer or donate. Funds raised go to vital cancer research, prevention programs and support services such as Cancer Council Helpline, 13 11 20. Register today at www.pinkribbonday.com.au. Just for laughs A SPANISH teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine. ‘House’ for instance, is feminine: ‘la Casa.’ ‘Pencil,’ however, is masculine: ‘el lapiz.’ A student asked, ‘What gender is ‘computer’?’ Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether ‘computer’ should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation. The men’s group decided that ‘computer’ should definitely be of the feminine gender (‘la computadora’), because: No one but their creator understands their internal logic. The native language they use to communicate with other com-

puters is incomprehensible to everyone else. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your income on accessories for it. The women’s group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine (‘el computador’), because: In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on. They have a lot of data but still can’t think for themselves. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they are the problem. As soon as you commit to one, you realise that if you had waited a little longer, you could have got a better model. The women won.

THE Gold Coast Smocking Group’s exhibit at the 2013 Gold Coast Show was a popular spot for visitors to the Homecrafts pavilion. Displaying a variety of handmade smocked items created by members of the not-for-profit Group (formerly Guild), the designs were delicate and eyecatching yet practical. Gail Groth, one of several volunteers who helped with the stand during the three-day event, answered questions about smocking and also explained that monies raised from raffle ticket sales during the Show would go toward materials needed for ‘Sew Precious’ gowns donated to hospitals for pre-term babies who did not survive.

Craft for Fun

It’s free. It saves lives

FOR years so many of us put off taking up a hobby we have a love of due to family and economic pressures and often because we don’t believe we have the ability or skills to accomplish our dreams. Now is the time to do something for yourself. There is nothing so relaxing and rewarding as creating something yourself. It doesn’t have to be exotic, expensive and definitely doesn’t have to be perfect just your own creation. To send a card you have made or a beautiful picture you have constructed on canvas gives such a feeling of joy and accomplishment as well s the feelings it creates for the receiver knowing the time and effort that went into the creation of the treasure. I fell in love with European Scrapbooking a while back, it is so easy and creative, turns your photos into little works of art. Another craft I get a great deal of pleasure out of is Gold Work Embroidery, so simple to do but a real WOW finished product. I have been teaching craft to seniors for many years. Being a senior myself means we have lots of fun and lots of ‘’remembering’’ time. There’s plenty to choose from European Scrapbooking, Goldwork Embroidery, patchwork & quilting, card making, crafts on canvas, etc. It’s time for a big clean up so some of my overstock items have to go at silly prices, for instance excess yarns will go at 50c a ball, kits will be further reduced by 20%. Another thing I have an interest in is publishing and marketing on the internet, the last 2 years have been a steep learning curve but it’s finally working. I have a FREE handout for anyone who may be interested in trying their hand at this. Phone Renaissance Promtions (02) 6672 6228.

All the funeral options you want in one beautiful location MODERN crematorium completes full funeral service Tweed Valley Cemetery offers a full list of quality and professional funeral services in one beautiful location, following the recent opening of a modern crematorium at its stunning Evirongounds. “The new crematorium enables Tweed Shire Council to provide a complete list of services in a single location, offering a more relaxed and less stressful day for family and friends,” Council spokesperson Peter Ganser said. “Situated in the rolling Eviron hills, the cemetery is in one of the region’s most stunning locations and is conveniently located for people in the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers areas, just 10 minutes south of Coolangatta. “It features many highly attractive options for burial or permanent sites for ashes, such as memorial walks and gardens.” Nestled among the gardens is an historic, non-denominational chapel which is perfect for funeral services, wakes and other gatherings of family and friends. It includes seating for up to 90 people, audio-visual equipment and kitchen facilities for catering. “Our staff work with your funeral director to provide a full list of high quality and cost effective services in one relaxing location,” Peter said. “We offer beautiful facilities and a professional, respectful team to help your family find closure and know their loved ones will be looked after forever. “A permanent site for ashes gives family and friends peace of mind that there will always be a special place to remember a loved one.” The range of options is further expanded by burial and ash sites at Council’s equally beautiful Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads lawn and general cemeteries. Are you wasting vegetables and fruits regularly? FOOD waste is a huge problem in Australia. According to Foodwise, Australian householdsthrow out more than $8 billion worth of edible food every year, which equates to about $1,036 per household. Of the $8 billion wasted, $2.67 billion is fresh food. Seniors struggle with fresh food wastage because it is cheaper to buy vegetables and fruits in bulk. We use only what we need and store the balance in the refrigeratorwhere it goes stale due to improper storage. In our warm Queensland weather, vegetables and fruits go off quickly without proper storage. If we waste $5 per week, that is throwing $260 per year into the bin! $10 per week wasted is $520 per year!! Stop throwing away money - use Super Fresh Bags. Super Fresh Bags are food storage bags made from food grade materials. They keep vegetables and fruits fresh as the day they were first bought for several weeks. Nutrients are retained for longer. The bags are kept in the refrigerator. They are washable and reusable, easy to maintain and affordable. They last a very, very long time -more than 8 months. This is what people have said about Super Fresh Bags:• S Batchelor of Brisbane says “Thank you for making my fruit and vegetables last until they are finished. Very rarely do I get to finish them before they perish and need to be thrown out. I was pleasantly surprised when I put 2 peeled potatoes in one bag and the next day I expected them to be brown and unusable but they were as good as just peeled. I used one bag for sliced mushrooms but did not expect them to last, surprised again. Amazing product, I haven’t thrown anything out since I starting using them.” • R Roberts of Coombabah says “I put cantaloupe and spring onions in separate bags and they were still in perfect condition some 23 days later. The spring onions were in excellent condition, some 33 days on. A bunch of mint lasted over 2 weeks and was fresher than when first put it in the bag. What fantastic bags with fantastic results!” Purchase Super Fresh Bags online at www.superfreshbags.com.au or call 07-5529 7743 for phone orders. Free delivery Australia-wide. DVDs help patients look after their lungs

LUNG Foundation Australia has released a new series of DVDs specially designed to help people living with lung disease to better manage their disease, symptoms and treatment. The ‘Better Living with Your Lung Disease’ program supports and enables people living with a lung disease through a series of educational patient DVDs focused on giving people the ability to ‘self-manage’ their disease. The DVDs are an excellent opportunity for patients to learn the importance of managing their disease and how they can implement these strategies in their homes. These DVDs are especially useful for people in regional areas and will help patients live the highest quality of life possible, within the constraints of their illness. This is a hidden health issue in our community because many people don’t

talk about lung health and their voices aren’t being heard despite lung disease affecting one in seven Australians. A recent Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report showed hospitalisation rates for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) were higher in inland and rural areas of Australia in 2007-10 showing the importance of patients being better informed and in control of their health. The series of 10 DVDs covers topics such as: Managing your lung disease; How do your lungs work; Managing your breathlessness; Managing treatment options; Questions you can ask your health professional; Tips for looking after yourself and your disease. The DVDs are free to patients and members of the general public. To receive your copy, please call 1800 654 301 or visit www.lungfoundation.com.au.

News from THE TWEED Local Book Project for Schools in Sierra Leone

TWEED resident, Sarah King, has collected over 2,000 books for disadvantaged schools and communities throughout Sierra Leone. She has been assisted by the Richmond Tweed Regional Library and is now seeking donations to ship the books to Africa.

Sarah was born and raised in Sierra Leone. To obtain an education, she walked many kilometers to school each day. At high school, the rat-infested library was totally inadequate for the number of children in overflowing classrooms. This situation was

worsened by the 10-year civil war from which the country is still recovering. Sierra Leone is rated 115th in the literacy scale in the world. Sarah says: ‘I have come to realize that one way to empower a nation is through education. To have access to a functioning library is a

U3A Tweed Coast Inc SOMEBODY once said that the more things change the more they stay the same. But at U3A Tweed Coast we pride ourselves on changing things. We endeavour to offer new classes, different venues and varied speakers at our forums. But one thing that never changes is our desire to contribute to the community by ensuring that older people keep their minds alive at a time in their lives when they’ve finished full time work and at last have some time to themselves. Our members tell us they find our classes friendly, supportive and the environment very social. We remind readers that we will be represented at the Tweed Seniors Expo on Thursday 19 September. This will be held at the SDA Community Centre, Racecourse Road, Murwillumbah and will run from 9.00 a.m. until 3.00 p.m. There is an entry fee of $2. The theme of the Expo is “great ideas for well- being” and we at U3A Tweed Coast regard our organisation as ticking all the boxes when it comes to contributing to the social, emotional and physical health of our members. Our Committee representatives and group leaders will be on handon 19 September to answer queries and provide details of our courses and events and willalso enrol new members. We remind readers that our membership fee is only $20 for the six months until the end of the year. News of a couple of new groups: member Neil Smith (mob. 0400291895) is calling his new course”Maths Made Easy”. SENIORS NEWS Toastmasters Go Public with “Dare to Speak” COME and learn the art of public speaking from Toastmasters at Helensvale and Nerang Libraries this spring. The “Dare to Speak” series of 10 workshops is designed to teach public speaking techniques to the community. Area 24 Governor, Mr Armando Cristofori said he is bewildered at how many people still struggle with the art of speaking publicly. “Public speaking is in the top five most commonly held fears,” Mr Cristofori said. “People just don’t realise how quickly and easily they can learn and develop the skills and find the confidence to take to the stage and really shine”.

This Community Program is designed to focus on refining participants’ communication, persuasion and presentation skills. Mr Cristofori said teaching these techniques to the community is a new concept and by going into the community he is tackling the problem at a grass roots level. “Freedom of speech is an unadulterated privilege and a constitutional right and when people understand its true power the whole community benefits,” Mr Cristofori said. “A community that can debate openly is well connected, integrated and proactive and enjoys a strong sense of community”. The 10 “Dare to Speak” workshops include Speaking to Inform, Communicating through Video as well as Persuasive, Special Occasion, Humorous and Entertaining Speech Writing and Technical Presentations. “Dare to Speak” will have participants ready to not only raise their glasses this silly season but also their voices. The workshops commence in September at Helensvale and at Nerang and continue till mid November. Bookings are essential and can be made by phone through the Gold Coast Library of your choice or online at http://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/library/ events-activities-66.html

Is Homelink for you?

DO you live alone on the Gold Coast? Are you elderly or disabled or do you have a medical condition? If you answer ‘yes’ to these questions, then the Queensland Police Service Homelink may be for you. Homelink was designed as a means to record contact details that can be used in an emergency. Volunteers in Policing make contact with residents and enter their confidential details onto the Police database. This information is used by Police to make contact with relatives during an emergency and to notify the appropriate agencies for assistance. As part of this program, Volunteers in Policing offer a security audit of the home. This includes general information on home security, pointing out areas of vulnerability that may attract thieves; information on engraving personal property and personal safety, and other information that may benefit the client. These services are free of charge. If you would like further information about the Homelink Program, please call the Crime Prevention Unit at Broadbeach Police Station on 5581 2840.

Bowen Therapy’s powerful healing modalities

BOWEN Therapy is one of the most powerful healing modalities used worldwide. Results can be remarkable even from the first session. It can assist in recovery from many conditions. It is recommended by many doctors because it is safe, gentle and non invasive. Jan is a registered Bowen Therapist and have been trained in the original technique which has been found to be the most effective method and have helped clients with back pain/sciatica, digestion/irritable bowel, migraines and tension headaches, knee/ankle/foot problems, neck/ shoulder/frozen shoulder, respiratory/asthma/hay-fever, RSI, carpal tunnel syndrome/tennis elbow, arthritis pain reduction, stress and tension. Patient testimonials: “I visited Jan with painful sciatica and irritable bowel. Doctors and medication had not helped me. I was amazed that after 3 treatments I was symptom free. My symptoms have not returned.” Rev. Denise Smith, Currumbin “I had problems with my neck seizing up unable to move it. After one appointment with Jan it was 100% better and hasn’t returned.” Renee Hurley, Springbrook “Before I went to Jan I was mentally and physically exhausted, tired of the pain in my back, neck and knees and unable to sleep. After three treatments I was completely pain free.” Yasmin Winters, Broadbeach “I visited Jan for arthritis in my hips and knees, with regular monthly sessions I am now pain free.” Freda Bartlett, Robina “I have been seeing Jan regularly for 3 months. EVERY session I attend whether to relax or work on a specific area of pain or discomfort, the results are instant and effective. I had numbness in my big toe for 12 months, with 1 session I have never experienced this again. I had a long standing injury in my wrist, with 2 sessions that pain has effectively stopped.” Andrew Barker, Mudgeeraba (National Development Manager, Bartercard Australia) “ I sought out Jan’s services to relieve headache and tension and her treatment has been very effective and beneficial and I would recommend her to anyone. Contact Jan if you have symptoms that ‘never go away’, you will be so glad that you did – Bowen is wonderful.” Sheila Brown, Robina Jan Evans is a full member of the Bowen Association of Australia.

Fish oil supplements – could they be dangerous? USUALLY every Father’s day I get beer, chocolates or tickets for the footy, but this year my son surprised me completely! After a picnic in the park and a fish by the creek with my children and grandchildren, I came home and found that they had changed my toilet seat…I was gob smacked; it had a remote and everything! My son told me that this new seat would wash and dry me with just the push of a button, he said that he had purchased one for his family just last week and they loved it so much that he just had to get one for

me to! Well, two weeks later I don’t know how I ever survived without it… All I have to do is sit down on my nice warm seat and go to the loo, once I am finished I simply press a button and I get a warm water wash and warm air dry! Now my toileting is a time of luxury, it is the best Father’s Day present I have ever bloody got! MANY of us use fish oil supplements as a means of increasing our intake of omega-3 fats, as these fats are essential and are known to be beneficial for cardiovascular and overall health. Findings show that omega-3 fats may help to protect against heart disease, stroke and depression, reduce blood pressure and triglycerides, alleviate the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and lessen the chance of sudden cardiac death in people with heart disease. However, there are concerns regarding the safety of using omega-3 fish oil supplements in high doses. A recent study suggests a possible link between a greater risk of prostate cancer with higher intakes of omega-3 fatty acids, but further research is needed to confirm this relationship.

Do you need help managing your medicines?

There is also the potential for high doses of omega3s to prevent the blood from clotting, which could lead to bleeding, particularly in people with a bleeding disorder, or those who are using warfarin, aspirin or other anti-coagulants. Omega-3 fish oil supplements can become quite costly, and there has also been concern regarding the quality of supplements that are available on the market. Because of the uncertainty around the potential risks of using omega-3 fish oil supplements in high doses, supplements should be used with caution, and increasing your omega-3 intake from food is the better way to go. Stairlifts improve independence of disabled and elderly MASTER Lifts offer the Minivator range of stairlifts, these are high quality, reliable mobility solutions to improve the independence of disabled or elderly people as well as increased convenience of those who care for them. Stairlift tracks fall into two basic categories, straight or curved. A Master Lifts surveyor will visit your home and a conduct a free, no obligation, technical survey to assess the suitability of your stairs as well as recommend the optimum solution for the user. The

Master Lifts surveyor also has a demonstration trailer that can be brought to your home so you can try before you buy. Straight stairs can typically be installed within one week of the technical survey. The installation takes about 4 hours and because the track is fitted to the stairs, not your walls, there is no mess or re-decorating required after installation. Curved stairlifts have tracks that are specifically designed to suit staircases that turn corners and could even be made

to suit spiral staircases. All curved tracks are made to order following a survey so take a little longer before delivery and installation. Master Lifts Surveyors use a computer-

ised photographic system to survey curved stairs; this ensures that your lift will fit perfectly. All Minivator lifts use a battery back-up system so will continue to work in

the event of a power cut. The compact units fold up when not in use to keep the staircase free for other users and can be locked to prevent unwanted use. They are very easy to use

and have a number of inbuilt safety features. To book your free, no obligation demonstration call Master Lifts on 1300 454 387 or visit www.masterlifts. com.au.

Health check a life saver LOCAL residents are being urged to take advantage of a quick, free and simple health check that could save your life. During National Stroke Week and The Pharmacy Guild of Australia’s Queensland Branch will host health checks at participating pharmacies, community health centres and hospitals this National Stroke Week. National Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Dr Erin Lalor urged locals to make the most of

the free checks. “Take five minutes out of your day and get your numbers checked, it may save your life,’’ Dr Lalor said. Often known as the silent killer, because there may be no symptoms, high blood pressure is a key risk factor for stroke. The only way to know your blood pressure is to have it checked. “Nearly four million Australian’s over 25 have high blood pressure, but many do not know it, put-

ting their health and lives at risk,” Dr Lalor said. By checking blood pressure and completing simple type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk assessments, pharmacists and health professionals will be able to help identify people who may be at risk of stroke and related conditions. Those at risk will be referred to their doctor for advice on how to lower their risk and to stay healthy. “One in six people will have a stroke in their lifetime. These people are you, your family, your friends, your colleagues. Yet only around half of Australians know the signs of stroke and one in 10 couldn’t spot a stroke if it happened right in front of them,’’ Dr Lalor said. “Stroke is largely preventable and usually very simple to identify but most people simply don’t know enough about it. “Get involved this National Stroke Week and unite with us to help raise awareness of stroke and encourage all Australians to take action to reduce their risk of stroke.” Almost 800 pharmacies, community health centres and hospitals across Queensland will be conducting free ‘Know your numbers’ health checks this National Stroke Week. HOLIDAY & Leisure Sight seeing tours in the style of a bygone era THE excitement of a day out by steam train commences at Roma St as you go walk along the platform to find your carriage with a reserved seat. It is then

a quick walk to the head of the train to inspect the great “Iron Horse” which is simmering away quietly waiting for the grand departure. Final boarding

announcements are made, the guard blows his whistle and waves the green flag and the engine bursts into life with it’s whistle blowing to signal

departure and steams out of the platform heading for the day’ destination. Like the sound of the above? The Australian Railway Historical Soci-

ety (Queensland Division) is in its 56th year of operating rail tours. Over 960 excursions operated by both steam and diesel hauled trains to many destinations in Queensland have been run by the Society since 1957, of course the steam hauled tours are very popular and give passengers a nostalgic tour in travel of a bygone era – travelling in style in the heritage carriages. Forget about the cold weather, spring is not far off – that means the flowers are about to bloom in Toowoomba so join us for one of our most popular tours for the year – the Silver Bullet Express to Spring Bluff and Toowoomba on Wednesday 25th September. This great day out includes a visit to the beautiful gar-

dens at Spring Bluff Railway Station as well as some of the prize winning gardens in Toowwomba. Looking for a great train adventure? The join us in the first week of October aboard the Thallon South West Express. This diesel hauled tour takes you in heritage wooden carriages to South West Queensland with overnight stops at Warwick and Goondiwindi enroute to Thallon – the terminus of the south west line. Enjoy great country scenery as the train passes through the southern and downs and south west region grain and cotton fields. The Glasshouse Country Festival takes place on 19th October and there is no better way to see the scenic Sunshine Coast Hinterland than from the

window of your heritage carriage as the train steams along. This excursion will stop for short breaks at the Glasshouse Mountains, Mooloolah and Landsborough townships along the way for you to hop off and explore the festivities. Christmas is not that far ahead – Santa has already booked his seat aboard the Suburban Steamer on Saturday 7th December – be sure to book your seat early for this very popular trip, bookings are now open. To book or order a brochure phone our office on 3252 1759 between 10am and 3.00pm Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays. A recorded message operates at other times. Ray Edser (Tour Manager)

HOLIDAY & Leisure SunsuperRiverfire

Pic: courtesy Justin Nicholas ON 28 September, Brisbane’s city sky will ignite in a continuous burst of spectacular colour, music and special effects. Meticulous plans are already well underway to create a gripping fireworks display, set to explode in front of hundreds of thousands of people and draw the attention of the entire city.

There will be aerial displays late in the afternoon and evening, building to the fireworks extravaganza at 7pm. It will be a fitting celebration to close three jam-packed weeks of Brisbane Festival fun. Riverfire at South Bank is an alcoholfree event and public transport to the area is recommended.

It’s a tough job . . . but someone has to do it! AS owners of several award-winning agencies including Lifestyle Travel and Cruise Centre in Coolangatta, Bob and Beth Malcolm do a lot more than simply book their clients on flights, cruises or pre-packaged tours. Based on their own extensive travels, they have developed a significant niche market designing their own small group tour itineraries, escorted all the way by Bob, Beth or one of the experienced travel specialists from their agency. Each year Lifestyle Travel and Cruise Centre run some 16 personalised tours to places like India, China, Africa, South America and Antarctica. Not surprisingly, the agency’s other major area of specialisation is cruising. And again, their success has been built on Bob and Beth’s

own personal experience and that of their experienced and well travelled consultants. “Everyone who works for the agency has travelled extensively and sampled a range of cruise experiences,” says Bob. “As such, we not only advise clients on the best itineraries to suit their interests; but we can also tell them which are the best cabins on each particular ship, the most worthwhile shore excursions, the entertainment that they really shouldn’t miss and what to see in each port of call.” To find out more about their exclusive escorted tour itineraries, their best price cruise packages or to design your own holiday of a lifetime, contact Lifestyle Travel and Cruise Centre, Beachcomber Arcade, Griffith Street, Coolangatta, phone 5599 2929.

Travel with your mobility scooter on public transport

MOBILITY devices such as wheelchairs and scooters are an essential part of daily life for many people. More and more Queenslanders are using mobility devices every year and this number is expected to keep growing as Queensland’s population grows older. The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads has produced a booklet that focuses on requirements for using the increasing number of accessible transport services, such as buses, trains, ferries

and wheelchair accessible taxis. It is important that you know your rights and responsibilities on public transport and know any other laws that apply to using your wheelchair or mobility scooter. To obtain a copy of the booklet go online to www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Travel-andtransport.aspx, click on ‘Disability access and mobility’ and find ‘Travelling with mobility devices’. You can also pick up a copy at your local Dept. of Transport service centre or call 13 74 68.

HOLIDAY & Leisure The Winchester Mystery House WILLIAM Winchester made his fortune from the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, marketers of the famous rifle. His widow, Sarah, was apparently told by a medium that she must “build a home for herself and for the many spirits who fell from this terrible weapon.” She was also told that she must never stop building, if she did, she would die. Sarah chose a site that is about one hour’s drive south of San Francisco, in what is now San Jose. Construction began in 1884 and continued around the clock, without interruption for 38 years until her death at age 82,

at which time work immediately ceased. The result is a bizarre legacy, now a tourist attraction. The mansion is renowned for its size and utter lack of any master building plan. Prior to the 1906 earthquake the house was seven stories high but suffered damage in the quake and was restored to just four stories. It has 160 rooms including 40 bedrooms, two ballrooms, 47 fireplaces, 17 chimneys, 10,000 windows and three elevators. It is a veritable hodgepodge of doors, stairs, passageways, cupboards, rooms, windows and balconies with no

sense or order in the layout. One door opens onto a blank wall, several others open to a sheer drop. A staircase goes right up to a ceiling and just stops. Posts are upside down. There is a window built into the floor. Some passageways have dead ends. One chimney is four floors high and stops just short of the ceiling. Sarah suffered debilitating arthritis and had special narrow steps with low risers that zigzagged back and forth to go from one level to the next. Some passageways are so narrow that an ordinary person has to turn sideways to get through. The number 13 had spe-

cial significance for Sarah. Chandeliers hold 13 candles, clothes hangers are in multiples of 13, stained-glass windows have 13 colours, 13 windows in a room, 13 panels in each window, 13 drain holes in the sinks, 13 petals on daisies. One had to wonder if she was mad or possessed. The mansion had some features unheard of when the house was built. It had forced-air heating, indoor toilets and plumbing, push-button gas lights, servant call buttons and piped hot water. Winchester Mystery House Sarah slept in each of the 40 bedrooms in turn. Leg- three people ever went builders. The roof is a aviary, greenhouse and a end has it that she never through the ornate front maze of spires, turrets and museum of the “Gun that had any visitors and only doors – herself and two peaks with nothing won the west”. Guided matching and no symme- tours are available. These try. The grounds have a take about two hours and foreman’s house, fruit- cost around $40. A health jewel in the Czech crown The Mill Colonnade, the quintessential symbol of Karlovy Vary

GOLDEN Prague is unquestionably the principal jewel in the crown of the Czech towns but the Czech lands have many more delights to offer. Undiscovered by many foreign tourists are the magnificent spa towns with their curative ben-

efits and individual charms. The biggest, best known and perhaps the most glamorous is Karlovy Vary, also known under its German name Carlsbad. Karlovy Vary which is situated about 125km west of Prague was

founded in the 14th century by Czech King Charles IV. The town’s fame spans many centuries and is based on the curative powers of its mineral waters. It also has a rich inspirational and cultural tradition. It was visited and admired

bymany prominent people including Tsar Peter the Great, Bismarck, Ataturk, Goethe and Beethoven. Today the town frequently hosts many international exhibitions, festivals and cultural events. The current art nouveau and pseudo-renaissance face of Karlovy Vary was given to it at the end of the 19th century. The magnificent town centre is a marvel of spa architecture. The central promenade is a fairy tale display of spa colonnades and well restored buildings dotted with shops, galleries, cafes and restaurants. The largest and the best known colonnade is the Mill Colonnade which houses several mineral water dispensaries and an orchestra podium. The most famous mineral spring is the Vridlo( Hot Spring) also known as the Sprudel. Hot mineral water which comes from a depth of about 2000m finishes in a

geyser that gushes several meters high above the ground. In Karlovy Vary “taking the waters” is the thing to do. Stroll around sipping the freely dispensed mineral water from specially designed cups. Some waters do taste strange but history and many famous people will attest that the waters are good for you. As well tea or coffee and cake at the magnificent Grant Hotel Pupp is a must. There are also many lovely parks and the town is surrounded by woods with many kilometres of hiking tracks. Karlovy Vary is only a bus trip away from Prague and takes about two hours and twenty minutes each way. There is an old Czech saying; “Many roads lead to the Czech lands but for those in search of health all roads lead to Czech spas.”If you visit the Czech lands time spent in Karlovy Vary will not disappoint.

Drinks with the Director a double feature

Director Noella Johnson is pictured onstage prior to appearing in a filmed presentation where she gave an insight, along with cast members, into The Glass Menagerie.

Drinks with the Director at Southport’s Gold Coast Little Theatre is always a couple of hours well spent and the latest occasion was no different. Held 12 days out from Opening Night of The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams, the August Drinks with the Director (which included a generous supper) not only gave an insight into the play through the unusual use of film, with director Noella Johnson and her cast individually appearing via an onstage screen to talk about the production and the roles within it, but Chair of Productions Julanne Shearer, along

with upcoming 2014 directors, also let the audience in on what was coming up in the new year through a unique stage presentation that had supporters laughing and clapping and calling out for more. Mayor’s Concert a swinging success THE yearly Mayor’s Concert is a highlight (some say an institution) of Seniors Week and the 2013 extravaganza at The Arts Centre Gold Coast was no exception. With over 500 seniors in the audience at each of the two free Concert sessions, the theme Songs for Swinging Seniors—In the Mood...again! 1940s Golden Age of the Radio Show resonated with enthusiasm throughout the Paradise Room setting. As a host of vibrant and multi-talented performers gave their all, incorporating song, dance, piano and period costumes into acts that ran the range of emotions associated with the ’40s, the audiences responded warmly with chorus singing, hand clapping, laughter and plenty of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’. The show’s producer and director, well-known professional performer and writer Kate Peters, made a surprise appearance as the sultry Mae West. During his welcome address at the morning session, Mayor Tom Tate emphasised that it was a privilege; a mark of respect, to be able to stage a concert for seniors who had done so much for community over the years. Mayor Tate continued that no seniors should feel isolated; that the Gold Coast community was there for them. He added that anyone who had comments to share about the Mayor’s Concert should drop him a line. Deputy Mayor and Division 1 Councillor Donna Gates opened the afternoon Concert session and, as the Mayor had also encouraged, Cr Gates urged all seniors to take advantage of free, off-peak bus travel during the trial period (ending 31 March 2014). The Mayor and Cr Gates both said that by travelling with paying family and friends when possible, the free bus travel for seniors initiative would help pay for itself.

Mayor Tom Tate and Deputy Mayor Donna Gates are pictured with the audience at the 2013 Seniors Week Mayor’s Concert.
