Art in Bark Celebrating 40 years of Barking

THE progressive Art in Bark Association of Australia, based at Brisbane, is celebrating its 40th anniversary next month at the Bleeding Heart Gallery in 166 Ann Street where some of the finest examples of this artistic expression will be on display.

Art in Bark started in 1973 when a group got together for meeting in Corinda with the founder the late Danny Zam. About 30 artists will present at the anniversary showing including bark pictures from Toowoomba, the Gold Coast and Melbourne.

“Our members have excelled in this exhibition, creating wonderful land and seascapes and portraits in bark that can stand proud alongside oil and acrylic paintings,” ABA president Barbara Parker said.

“ABA founder Danny Zam and some of the earlier members were trying for more than 35 years to get bark pictures accepted by art galleries in Queensland. The galleries said it was a craft because we used glue on our brushes.

Barbara has been creating bark pictures for 37 years, starting in 1976 with the Inala Craft Group which is still going strong. She finds bark art a good, relaxing therapy – “like putting jigsaw pieces together’ – and at the same time you make some wonderful friendships.

The modern form of bark pictures first appeared with the earlier settlers in Australia, who made the bark pictures by hand to decorate their homes.

paper bark from Melaleuca Trees. Some of this is very fine, just like pages of paper.

The Art in Bark Association has presented at many annual shows at the Mount Coot-tha Auditorium and organises field trips to collect the bark.

“Different trees in different areas have different colours – pinks to yellows, reds, oranges, browns and whites,” Barbara Parker said.

“We don’t use artificial colours, which makes it different from Aboriginal art – it’s quite unique to Australia.”

SENIORS NEWS Charity flight in support of angel flight

ON Monday 12th August, the General Manager of Organisational Services at Redland City Council, Nick Clarke, flew out of Caboolture airfield to visit around 42 local government areas across Queensland on a very special mission. His first stop will be Toowoomba and he will visit towns as widespread as Thargomindah, Burketown and Cooktown.

Whilst it is usually Angel Flight that flies long distances to help those in need, this 10,000km, 17day journey in a Foxbat light aircraft, is aimed at gaining financial support and increased awareness for Angel Flight amongst rural and remote communities. Access to major hospitals and treatment centres is a huge challenge for approximately 30% of Australians who live outside metropolitan areas and this comes with potential health risks, including higher mortality rates.

Nick said that he first heard about Angel Flight when he served as President of Local Government Managers Australia (LGMA) in Queensland, which also supports this organisation, and the more he learns about the

as well as handling exhibits at the dinosaur museum way out west at Richmond.

For this trip, Nick and University of Queensland Professor Mike Levy will share the flying duties in the Foxbat light sports aircraft across the state, encouraging local council managers and staff to support a great cause.

Professor Levy is a part owner of the aircraft they will be using for this spe-

cial trip and, like most pilots, will do anything and go anywhere as long as he can fly.

Sometime later, he met Angel Flight pilot Stephen White at a flying school in Redcliffe who expressed the real need for increasing awareness of what Angel Flight is doing across Australia.

“I was touched by the generosity of pilots like Stephen across Australia who donate their time and their planes to alleviate the discomfort of patients travelling long distances by road to receive medical help at major treatment centres,” Nick said.

“But what really inspired me to take on this project was understanding for the first time that very

sick men, women and children living in remote communities have to deal with travelling long distances to major centres and when you’re not feeling well that’s the last thing you want to do.”

“On top of that I realised that most of them don’t have enough money to travel and pay for accommodation. But what hit me emotionally was when I discovered that Angel Flight actually 2 of 2 helps to keep families together, for instance if a daughter is ill, her mother can travel with her for treatment and often be back home the same day.”

Inspired to help, Nick quickly registered as an Earth Angel joining nearly 3,800 Earth Angels across Australia providing sup-

port to patients and carers by using their own cars to transport them to and from airfields and medical facilities.

But not only was he inspired to help on a personal level, he also felt compelled to raise money to support Angel Founder and Chairman of Angel Flight Bill Bristow AM said that he is very grateful to Nick for supporting Angel Flight with such a generous gesture.

“Nick has a very real understanding of how the charity works and we are very appreciative of the major effort that he is making on this trip around the state and we will keep in touch and give a helping hand along the way where needed.”

Children and older people at risk CHILDREN denied a loving and caring relationship with their grandparents suffer detrimental effects which harm their development with long term consequences including personality disorders.

Recent research into Attachment Theory and the Neuroscience of Human Relationships has foundchildren in this situation experiencechanges which deprive them from properly developing the emotional part of the brain.

Furthermore, Grandparents who are emotionally attached to their grandchildren and have that relationship severed suffer not only emotionally but also biochemically and their lives may be shortened.

This research is supported by studies such as that into the Health of the Stolen Generations.

Some parents deny any relationship between their children and their grandparents for personal reasons, using their children as pawns in the dispute.

These may include emotional blackmail for financial

gain, retaliation, vindictiveness, mental health issues or a personality dislike. Secrecy is a welldocumented tool of Abusers.

In other cases separation of the parents in crosscultural or cross-religious marriages results in denial of any relationship with the non-custodial relatives. In others, Child Safety authorities who have placed children in the care of the grandparents, subsequently deny that relationship when attempting to re-establish relations between the parent and child.

Whatever the cause, Tony Townsend from the Queensland Council of Grandparents said this situation generates enormous emotional distress.

‘We want Governments at all levels to recognisethat this treatment constitutes Child Abuse of the grandchildren and Elder Abuse of the grandparents. By Jim Bowden took up woodchopping young champions comBEEFY axeman Kel Head, 75, nodded and smiled as his grandson was presented with the Queensland Champion of Champions Trophy at this year’s Ekka, a fourth successive title win for the young fourth generation competitive woodchopper.

“I knew Jamie would win it – he has the same spirit and determination as his father who has won the trophy 11 times in the 35year history of the competition,” Kel said.

After congratulating his grandson, Kel strode to a standing block event, ignored an aching shoulder still in repair after surgery, and swung his axe against eight muchyounger competitors.

The Redcliffe axeman began chopping at country shows 35 years ago. “At 40 I was a late starter,” said Kel who worked in the forestry industry at Gympie and Blackbutt cutting, snigging and hauling pine and hardwood logs.

“In fact, it was my son Kerry who inspired me to compete,” he says.

after he left the Air Force where he made friends with some fliers who were axemen. Sadly, at only 27, he was killed in an accident in the early 80s clearing an area of timber for the building of the Wivenhoe Dam. “Our dad, a ranger with the Department of Forestry, had encouraged my brother in his love of the sport. After the accident, he suggested my son Kerry follow in his footsteps, and as they say, the rest is history.”

But Kel Head didn’t like the idea of his son, then 19, travelling the bush circuit on his own, so he went with him. It wasn’t long before father and son were chopping beside each other at country shows.

They eventually represented Australia as a team in double handed crosscut sawing, winning many competitions.

At the Ekka, Kel Head also watched as another grandson, Thomas Wilkinson, 20, his daughter Jacki’s son, kept the chips flying.

“He’s been chopping since he was 17 and he’s

ing up through the bunch all over Queensland,” Kel beamed.

Retirement as an axeman?

“Not while I can still lift an axe,” insisted Kel. “I love the sport, and so does my wife Val, 73, who is our greatest supporter and travels to most of the shows.”

But Kel’s son Kerry, 52, has set the pace with his 11 titles as Queensland champion of champions – an incredible record to beat. He still competes when he’s not operating transport and machinery at the Tarong power station at Nanango in the South Burnett – a region well used to seeing Kel Head, his son and his two grandchildren face off the competition.

LIGHTING fires on Redland beaches or in the City’s parks without a permit can be costly, Redland City Council has warned. Council’s Open Space, Sport and Recreation spokesman Cr Lance Hewlett (Division 4) said in addition to the

risk of a fire burning out of control, unapproved fires could also endanger other park users.”Camp and cooking fires can pose a real hazard in popular public areas such as parks and beaches and the consequences can be serious,’’ Cr Hewlett said.

Retirees worried about money matters RETIREES are becoming increasingly worried about their financial circumstances, according to a survey of Australian households.

After consistently topping the list of those who feel most financially secure, retirees are starting to worry.

A survey by Melbournebased Members Equity Bank shows Australian households recorded an overall financial comfort level of 5.5 out of 10 – up from 5.29 six months ago.

But while all other households feel slightly better about their

finances, retirees were the only group to turn more pessimistic.

The financial comfort of retirees – in particular those supported by

government payments – deteriorated by 5%.

They reported feeling increasingly worried about their investments, living standards and

income stability.

This is the first time retirees have not topped the list of most financially comfortable since ME Bank’s survey began in 2011.

The report suggests lower borrowing rates has relieved pressure on those with mortgages, but done little for low-debt retirees.

Meanwhile, a stronger share market and housing market helped empty nesters – parents whose children have left home – assume the top spot, with their comfort levels up by 12%.

Changes to CSHC a step in the right direction, say seniors

CHANGES to the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card were a step in the right direction for older Australians, lobby group for the over 50s, National Seniors Australia said today.

At his campaign launch in Brisbane, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott

today announced $100 million in changes for the card if the Coalition wins government.

Abbott said the income threshold of $50,000 for singles and $80,000 for couples would rise in line with the Consumer Price Index, giving more self-funded retirees

access to cheaper medicines.

National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said the announcement was good news, but the scope of the changes could go further.

“We have been pushing for changes to the

Commonwealth Seniors Health Card to better reflect 11 years of inflation since the last adjustment in 2001,” he said.

“While today’s announcement is welcome, a $10,000 increase in the income thresholds for the card could make a real difference to the lives of seniors as more of them would become eligible.”

O’Neill also said Abbott’s announcement that the private health insurance rebate will be fully restored was also a positive development.

SENIORS NEWS Spectacular show at Seniors Gala Cabaret A NEAR-capacity crowd of more than 1,300 people was dazzled by the spectacular Lord Mayor’s Seniors Gala Cabaret on Sunday, 18 August in theCity Hall main auditorium. Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said 11 seniors performed in 10 acts during the final cabaret, which included singing and tap dancing.

“The fact so many people came along to support our talented seniors is testament to how valued our older citizens are,” Cr Quirk said.

“The recent $215 million refurbishment of City Hall provided a stunning backdrop for these perfor-

mances and this event was one of the highlights of Seniors Week.”

The program began in June when seniors all over the city attended performance workshops where they were coached by professional mentors from Brisbane and interstate.

Older investors suffer when advisers go belly-up FAILED financial advisers often with lapsed professional indemnity insurance are devastating the retirement plans of older Australians, consumer lobby group for the over 50s, National Seniors Australia says.

And to add insult to injury, the investors – many of them with Self Managed Super Funds (SMSFs) – are unlikely to get their money back because they cannot sue the principals of the failed businesses, according to a report in The Australian newspaper today.

The report said that Australian Financial Services and AFS Group had elderly clients with SMSFs containing hundreds of thousands of dollars in “inappropriate� investments recommended by AFS authorised representatives. National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said that retirees’ savings already hit hard by the GFC remained vulnerable to further losses unless the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) took a tougher approach. “Some financial advisers are taking advantage of trusting and inexperienced retirees and frankly giving the rest of

the industry a bad name,� O’Neill said. “What retirees and people approaching retirement want is assurance and meaningful protection to make advisers accountable and the regulations that govern them more enforceable. “ASIC also needs to be accountable for the role it has in creating a fair environment especially for inexperienced investors.� All investors, including SMSF trustees, should ensure the advice they receive includes information about the adviser’s insurance and how they can insure their own investment, he said. Earlier this year, National Seniors released a report showing that investors’ knowledge had not kept pace with the growing number and complexity of financial products over the last 20 years. “Many were too embarrassed to talk to their financial advisers for fear of being judged negatively,� Mr O’Neill said. “The federal government needs to act now – not only to encourage people to become better informed and more aware of the risks associated with investing, but also to ensure that financial advisers are better regulated.�

Sponsorships are available for events that benefit the local community and enhance the reputation of the Redlands. Redland City Mayor Karen Williams said the streamlined Council sponsorship program was vital in promoting a strong and involved community. “We have made it fairer by calling for applications in two rounds per year so they can be assessed against each other on merit, rather than on a ‘first in, best dressed’ basis,’’ Cr Williams said.

“This ensures that particularly worthy events don’t miss out on funding and that the Redlands gets the best possible value for its sponsorship dollar.

“In addition, sponsorships of up to $15,000 can now be authorised by an internal assessment committee, with larger amounts being referred to Council for approval. “This means a quicker

and more efficient assessment process.’’ Applications for the first round of sponsorships will close on Friday 6 September, 2013. There will be a second round from 17 February 2014 to 28 March 2014.

Sponsorship applications will be assessed on their benefits to the community, value for money and support for Council’s strategic priorities, such as community health and wellbeing, economic prosperity and enhancing the natural environment. “We are looking for the type of events that reinforce the fact that the Redlands truly is the best place to live, play and do business,” Cr Williams said. Gwen Billings 40 years caring for residents

YOU would think an employee who had invested 40 years into one workplace would be longing for the attention the achievement would bring – but not Gwen Billings.

Gwen, who works at Carinity Aged Care – Brookfield, finds more pleasure in her work caring for the aged care centre’s residents than the recognition that comes with the milestone.

“I enjoy caring for the aged, and having compassion and empathy. It just comes naturally,” Ms Billings said.

“Every resident is different; everyone has their

little idiosyncrasies, and that makes the job rewarding.”

The humble nurse says she doesn’t understand what all the fuss is about.

“I’ve been told I’ve been here 40 years, and I’m special, but I don’t think so. It just fitted in really well with my life,” she added. Gwen says the interaction she has with the residents during her evening shifts is a highlight of her job.

“Quite a few of them are so happy to see you,” she said.

“One resident I regularly talk to grew up near Cracow. I told him once

I’d gone for a trip up there, and seen the old hotel, and he was just over the moon. He was happy to hear all about. “For a few minutes, he was there. “It’s wonderful to be able to bring that joy to people,” she said. Care Manager at Carinity Aged Care – Brookfield, Nadia Fletcher, says Gwen’s put in an extraordinary shift so far. The aged care centre has always been owned and operated by Carinity (formerly Queensland Baptist Care) but has undergone a huge expansion and transformation since Gwen started working there in 1973, one year after the Brookfield centre opened. Numerous residential buildings and wings, as well as a community hall, chapel, and a new workshop and laundry have been constructed during that time.

Carinity has future plans to transform the Brookfield site so it can provide its residents with even higher quality, stateof-the-art care and comfort. Under the plan, the site will have 102 retirement lifestyle units and 96 residential aged care beds.

Money raised from the event will be used to provide sponsorships for 8 students ranging from Primary to Secondary to Tertiary level to help them through their education. IT’S not quite the Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race, but experienced yachtie Don Thompson was keen to give his sea legs a work out recently. The Zion Lutheran Home resident is a 1954 yacht race veteran and has even built his own catamaran. It’s been a while since he last hit the water, so what was the best sensation? “The freedom, the wind in your hair and the salt on your face,’’ he said, naming a trinity of sailing loves. “It was a lovely day, I really enjoyed it and look forward to going again.’’ Zion Lutheran Home in Nundah makes regular trips out to Moreton Bay. Resident John Bell just planned to tag along this

trip, but was easily persuaded into a sailing dingy for his first-ever on-the-water experience. John and Don were under the experienced guidance of Sailability Shorncliffe based at the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club, which is run every Monday by volunteers. “It was a bit scary at first, but it was lots of fun and I am looking forward to going again, ‘’ John said. Annette Greenbury Diversional Therapist said sailing ticked many boxes for the residents. “Lots of fun and laughter was had, the chance to socialise with other people and talk about the experience, but most of all a sense of adventure!’’ she said.

toadstools (don’t eat ‘em!), offering everything from organic pig trotters to sakeflavoured rhubarb there was – the Roma Street Markets.

Just as popular in its day, Roma Street was the mecca for reliable, plain old fruit and veg – and mixed oats, wheat and chaff from farming outposts such as Forest

played in their hundreds and advertised as “a prominent slice of European cuisine”.

Brisbane’s first central market began in 1868 in a Brisbane Council shed on the riverfront at Market, Charlotte and Eagle streets. After years of poor patronage, it closed in 1881. Four years later, in 1885, the council opened the

purpose-built municipal market in Roma Street, tucked beside the rail line and handy to the wharf area in the heart of the city. There it stayed and prospered for 79 years, the stall-holders a rich mix of Aussies and Italian, Greek and Chinese immigrants.

But as the city grew, so did its congestion, forcing the state government to re-locate the central market to Rocklea in 1964, were the Brisbane Markets are located today. On opening day it comprised five buildings and a trading area covering just 14 ha. However, the overall site now totals around 50 ha.

In 2002, prompted by industry, the state government agreed to sell the Brisbane Markets by an open tender process. Landacq Ltd, a public company of

150 predominantly industry-based shareholders, won a fierce bidding dual buying the now 72-hectare site for $74 million. The company then changed its name to Brisbane Markets Ltd. This year the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame selected Brisbane Markets as the winner of the inaugural Business History Award, recognising leadership in collecting, preserving and sharing business history.

With historical records dating back more than 150 years, Brisbane Markets has preserved unique and important historical documents and items. These documents and memorabilia were stored in boxes by staff, unaware of their significance.

In 2010, a Brisbane Markets history task force catalogued the company’s records and treasures and developed a collection room of photographs, memorabilia and film which is now open for public viewing at the Rocklea offices.

SENIORS NEWS Horse Collar Making, a talk on the process of making horse collars

By Ivan Cowen THE baby boomers of today would be aware of a number of traditional artisan skills such as the trades of the black smiths, saddle makers and the coopers to name a few. The trade of the horse collar maker would not be as familiar and is another of the far too many skills that are vanishing.

Before the mechanization of many industries the horse collar was used by the ‘beast of burden’ with the farmer yoking up his horse to plough, teamsters with their team of horses pulling drays and coaches, and testing their strength on the rough outback tracks pulling large loads of product such as wool, casks and timber. At a shed located in the back yard of their home in Deagon, Ivan Cowen’s dad and brother were horse collar makers and worked side by side for many years. Ivan had the privilege of witnessing many horse collars being produced and Ivan will explain the mystery of making horse collars at the Sandgate Museum. Visitors are welcome on Sunday 22nd September, 2013 at the Sandgate & District Historical Society and Museum, 150 Rainbow Street, Sandgate.

U3A Brisbane Winter School a great success

New report shows older people working longer NATIONAL Seniors Australia has welcomed a new report which shows a significant increase in the number of people remaining in the workforce for longer. The biennial Australia’s welfare report for 2013 published by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) released recently has found that labour force participation rates have been rising significantly.

In the past decade, labour force participation rates for men aged 60–64 rose considerably from 48% in 2002 to 63% in 2012. For men aged 65–69, the rise was from 20% to 34%.

Among women aged 60–64, participation rates rose from 25% in 2002 to 44% in 2012. For women aged 65–69, the rise was from 9% to 20%.

National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said there were a number of reasons why older Australians were choosing to work past retirement age.

“It’s a sign of the times that people are staying in the workforce for longer,” O’Neill said.

“One reason is that older Australians are much healthier than they used to be so many want to remain in employment,” he said.

“But another factor is that a significant

number were hit hard by the Global Financial Crisis so some are being forced to remain in the workforce to recoup what they lost during that GFC period.

“Others are also struggling with the cost of living and worrying if their superannuation will be enough for when they retire.”

O’Neill also highlighted that Australian workforce participation rates could be higher.

“We know that age discrimination in employment continues to be the main barrier for older Australians who are looking for work.”

“If Australia had the same mature-age participation as New Zealand, our GDP would be 4 per cent higher.”

The report also found that in 2012, just over half (53%) of employed people aged 65 and over worked part time, with women more likely to do so than men (69% compared with 45%).

The report coincides with the government’s economic statement last week which showed the Commonwealth would save $600 million on the pension over the next four years because people were working for longer instead of claiming benefits.

With nearly 1300 people attending over the 5 days and just about every session sold out, audiences were treated to presentations from people who are experts in their field. These high quality presentations included subjects such as “Drought Proofing Australia”presented by the keynote speaker from 2012, Everald Compton.

This thought provoking subject was well accepted by the capacity audience and was made even more enjoyable with Everald’s unique sense of humour. Other subjects ranged from “Everything you wanted to know about Acupuncture”, presented by Dr Jasmine Peris to a session on “Driving for Seniors” conducted by the RACQ. Another interesting subject presented was “Maintaining Healthy Bones” by Alison Ford plus many other subjects in between. The highlight of the week was undoubtedly the keynote presentation by the famous author an icon of Queensland,

Hugh Lunn. Hugh talked about his life and career to an enthralled audience of nearly 200 and I believe it will long live in the memory of all who attended. WOMEN retire with substantially less savings than men, even if they don’t have children or care for elderly parents and stay in full time work, according to a new report.

The research paper, ‘What’s choice got to do with it?’ by Prue Cameron for Canberra based The Australia Institute, says women retire with only 59 per cent of super at retirement age compared to men.

The analysis uses hypothetical examples to illustrate how the life course and work patterns of four different women – a nurse, lawyer, finance analyst and a retail worker – will likely impact on their superannuation earnings. “We found that these four women were earning between 44 per cent and 88 per cent of the superannuation of a male of the same age earning the average wage,” Ms Cameron said. The report shows that a woman working in commerce, with no children and who doesn’t need to care for elderly parents, still ends up with about nine per cent less superannuation than the average male on

retirement. Meanwhile, a woman who works in retail all her life, who has two children and cares for her elderly parents, will retire with less than half of the retirement savings of an average male of the same age.

“The reality is that most often choice doesn’t come into it. The fact that women continue to earn, on average, 17.6 per cent less than men is not a result of their choices. Nor is the fact that many women continue to be the primary carers simply a matter of individual preference, but the consequence is that women end up poorer.

“The uncomfortable facts are that women earn less than men and spend more time out of the workforce caring for children and elderly parents. All of these facts ensure that women will retire with less money than men and, bizarrely, receive far fewer taxpayer contributions to their superannuation than men.”

Consumers quick to lodge electricity and water complaints on-line CONSUMERS with complaints about their electricity and water services have been quick to take up a new online complaint and information service launched by the Energy and Water Ombudsman Queensland.

Since the launch of the Energy and Water complaints website on 1 July, 1,446 consumers have gone on to visit the Energy and Water Ombudsman Queensland website for more information or to lodge a complaint.

“Our figures show that in the month since the complaints website was introduced, we have experienced a 33 per cent increase in complaints lodged with us on-line,” said Energy and Water Ombudsman Forbes Smith.

The Energy and Water Ombudsman Queensland (EWOQ) is one of several agencies to develop the website, which has been designed to help consumers navigate the range of independent complaint agencies with different roles, responsibilities and powers.

“Electricity and water bills can be confusing at the best of times but when you have a problem, it is often even more confusing knowing where to turn for help,” says Mr Smith.

“The introduction of our complaints website enables consumers to quickly and easily get in contact with

the appropriate authority to lodge their complaint and get help. The website takes the user through a few simple questions before providing a direct link to the relevant authority’s website. In some cases, such as EWOQ, a complaint can then be lodged on-line.”

“Hopefully as a result of the complaints website, even more Queens-lander’s will take advantage of our free dispute resolution services and receive help with their energy and water issues.”

The Energy and Water Ombudsman Queensland provides free, fair and independent dispute resolution services to consumers unable to resolve a complaint with their electricity or gas supplier in Queensland or water supplier in south-east Queensland.

“We can help explain bills, negotiate with suppliers on behalf of people who are finding it hard to pay their bills, review extension of electricity supply arrangements, assist in arranging payment plans and help people who may have issues with connection delays or those facing disconnection or restriction,” said Mr Smith. A RECENT article in the Brisbane Seniors Newspaper on the visit by the Queen and Prince Phillip bought back memories. At the time my husband was a patient at Greenslopes Repatriation Hospital.

As we lived at Grovely, it meant a walk to the bus stop, a bus into the City, then another bus to Greenslopes. This long trip necessitated me taking my youngest baby with me. My three eldest children; one in the Girl Guides, two in Red Cross would be at the Ekka grounds to see the Queen.

When I got to the hospital, I was shocked to see my husband’s bed was empty. When I asked where he was, I was told “Oh, he’s gone!” Then the nurse said “Didn’t he tell you? He has gone to see the Queen”. It was a long trip home to get the children’s tea, then return later to the hospital. I no sooner got to my husband’s bedside when an irate male voice said “Get that woman out of here. No

visitors allowed as the men have gone to see the Queen”.

Back home I went to return the next day. Hubby said he wasn’t given any time to tell me not to visit as staff came and said “You are to have a shower, clean pyjamas and dressing gown. You are going to see the Queen”. An ambulance took my husband and another soldier and they were put on stretchers alongside the ambulance. As my husband had a catheter under the blanket, it was an uncomfortable tiring day for him.

However, on telling the kids about it later he proudly boasted that he was the only man who had peed before the Queen and not been arrested for it!

Newspaper reports said that he had three children in the Boy Scouts, much to the disgust of my kids.

As for myself, I was tired, cranky, out of pocket and didn’t see a thing!

LIFETEC at Newmarket ran another successful Active Living Seniors Expo during Seniors Week.

LifeTec is focused on providing free specialist information and advice from health professionals to maximise independence and safety.

Older people as well as children and adults with a disability can be more independent at home, work or school and in the community. Assistive technology and recommendations on home modifications are just some of the services offered by LifeTec. The event was officially opened by Tracy Davis MP, Minister for Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services. LifeTec CEO James Barrientos also welcomed everyone.

Assistive Technology includes a device or system that provides people with practical solutions to everyday activities. computers; enjoying recreational activities and assisting with caring for loved ones and living in an accessible and safe environment.

LifeTec does not sell these products but provides an advisory and support service that is totally free. Hundreds of helpful items that are available to the general public after consultation

with LifeTec health professionals are on display in the Newmarket and Townsville display centres.

LifeTec can provide speakers and practical demonstrations on assistive technology to community groups and exhibitions. Practical and interactive workshops can also be delivered to health professionals and

community care workers.

During the Expo, information stalls were available from a large number of organisations and presentations were also made in the main auditorium throughout the day.

Forest Lake 50+ Club

THIS month we headed north to the Samford Valley and the Samford Museum. On our arrival we were served a lovely morning tea. Then given a tour and a talk on the history of the area. The history is that the Government sold off lease land in 1865 and those who purchased the land turned it into dairy properties and crop growing as the area had a good water supply. These farms serviced the area very well, but alas most eventually were sold off for housing. Those interested in starting a museum for the area began collecting items in 1977 and the museum

opened its doors in 1986.

There are all different sorts of tools, farm implements & many other sorts of memorabilla. The enthusiastic volunteers were very willing to demonstrate how to use the old tools of the early days. A real eye opener to those too young to remember the “Good Old Days” and an insight into its history over the past 158years. and was first to use the term ‘Senior Citizen’. The name Metropolitan was selected due to it covering all the metropolitan area north and south. At the time of its creation, attitudes were very different towards caring about older people, so services were not heard of. When the centre opened in 1959 at 29 McLachlan Street, Fortitude Valley, a ‘Club’ section was made available where people over the age of 50 could meet together to find fellowship and companionship. The enrolment on the first day was 50 people and within three months 1200 people enrolled.

At its peak, MSCC had nearly 4000 clients attending activities and receiving support. Activities included language classes (Indonesian, French, German and Italian), dancing, painting, Mah-jongg and

exercises classes. There were also cards, outings, indoor bowls, table tennis, darts, concerts, films, handicrafts, and golf offered.

In 1969 legislation from the Government made it possible to apply for a Capital Subsidy grant towards rebuilding the premises, so a great deal of planning was undertaken to ensure that the centre would be available well into the future.

A new Day Centre was opened in 1965 and was refurbished and finished in 1972 and services were extended to include ‘Meals on Wheels’. 88 meals were delivered 5 days a week and some were delivered on weekends.

200 volunteers were involved in the running of the centre and paid staff included Secretary/Manager, Welfare Officer, part

time clerical assistant and cook. The centre also offered hairdressing and physiotherapy and had a mini bus donated by the Rotary Club of Fortitude Valley. From 1959 to1967, the Centre also housed the ‘Old People’s Welfare Council of Queensland’ now known as COTA. In 2001 we shifted to our current premises after selling the original building purchased in 1958.

Organisations such as Bernie Brae approached us for assistance with their service when they were planning it.

We ran the first ethnospecific Dementia Respite Service in Australia. We continue to work with the local community to identify their social and activity needs and are the only senior’s centre in this area to remain focused solely on the needs of older people.

Don’t ignore possible fire risks ELECTRICAL fires caused by Queenslanders leaving devices on after they leave the house are now one of the most common types of home fire, according to new research by leading insurer RACQ. “Many Queenslanders don’t realise, or are ignoring, the risks of unattended electrical appliances,” said Mike Sopinski RACQ Executive Manager Insurance Communications.

“There is awareness about the risks of leaving heaters on but many householders leave other appliances running all day while they are out, creating potentially dangerous fire hazards,” MrSopinski said.

According to the RACQ Insurance re-

search, in Queensland last year 15 per cent of home fires were caused by electrical equipment.

“RACQ research shows more than half of all householders leave printers and routers etc on while away from the home (55 per cent), followed by computers (52 per cent), washing machines (50 per cent) and mobile phone chargers (44 per cent). The research showed even kitchen stoves and electric blankets were being left on while unattended,” MrSopinski said. “It’s not uncommon to observe mobile phone chargers left permanently on, but we are reminding people that they should be at home when these appliances are running in case of a fire,” MrSopinski said.

The countryside and views around Maleny made for a wonderful day trip.

FOUR Brisbane Seniors Online mentors attended a recent practical demonstration of a Creator 3D printer at the business of Kerry’s Computer Company at Wavell Heights.

3D printing is the thing of the future with different models being capable of producing spare parts and items made from 3D software websites and made from different materials.

Kerry Hurst, manager/ owner of Kerry’s Computer Company plans to run regular demonstrations on the equipment and market it to the com-

munity. Kerry runs a computer tutoring service and the addition of 3D printer sales and support diversifies what is already on what she has to offer to the general public.

Some examples of innovative ideas and the capabilities of a 3D printer were explained. One use was to make parts for the Hills Hoist clothes line that were no longer manufactured or available.

There were numerous examples of where this could be applied. At the demonstration, a small threaded nut was made.

Other small items that had

been made were also on display.

NASA recently announced that the Glenn Research Center in the United States had successfully tested the first rocket engine injector made through additive manufacturing (a form of 3D printing) and there was the potential in the future to produce engine parts and possibly an entire spacecraft.

In the future, it will be common to source spare parts and other items through this method. The items required will be able to be ordered and printed

in commercial print shops very similar to how we currently have digital photography print shops now. It would eliminate the need for having millions of dollars of spare parts sitting on shelves awaiting sale. An online order could be placed, the plan obtained from the 3D software and loaded into 3D printer and the item produced. Of course there will different types of 3D printers that will be able to utilise other raw materials including metal to manufacture products.

The medical field has already manufactured and successfully used a 3D printer to make a new jaw bone for an 83 year old woman. Hip replacements and even stem cells could be developed using this emerging technology.

The Creator 3D printer as demonstrated uses various colour plastic type filament that is melted and extruded into layers to make the item. Kerry said that she was keen to promote the product (a number of models), make them available to the community and offer support for them.

Carnival of flowers

THE Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers is the leading floral and horticultural event in Australia and is held annually in September attracting up to 125,000 visitors. Seniors Week celebrating Senior Fitness

LOCAL seniors have kicked off Seniors Week with vigour testing out new fitness equipment in Parkinson, a state wide first. Councillor Angela OwenTaylor (Parkinson) said the supplier Lappset Australia confirmed it is the first senior-targeted fitness equipment to be introduced in public open space in Queensland. “The new equipment is an extension of playfulness into a zero to 100+ ideology, through the concept that no-one is ever too old to play or exercise,” she said. “It is developed to serve and maintain the well-being and physical fitness of senior citizens as well as acting as a means of relaxation.”To tee off Seniors Week celebrations, I invited local residents to test out the new equipment with a physiotherapist on site to guide their use of the equipment and answer any questions specific to their personal health.”We had a fantastic turn out, the park a-buzz

with activity and enthusiasm as many residents made commitments to improve their health and fitness.A Lappset Australia (the equipment manufacturer) representative travelled all the way from Melbourne to attend the official launch event.

Weekly workshops conducted by a physiotherapist are being planned to further assist local seniors in utilising the equipment to their optimum benefit.

“This is a great opportunity for senior residents to stay fit and healthy without a financial burden.I am pleased I have been able to deliver this project to benefit and support our seniors, the backbone of local community.” The equipment is located off Blairmount Street at Parkinson, backing onto Carrington RSL Care Retirement Community.

New hours the Riverview & Rosewood Recycling & Refuse Centres

OPERATING hours at the Riverview and Rosewood Recycling and Refuse Centres are set to be modified

by Ipswich City Council.

Ipswich Deputy Mayor and City Management and Finance Committee Chairperson Councillor Victor Attwood said council had decided to adopt seasonal hours for the Riverview Recycling and Refuse Centre similar to the current arrangements at the Rosewood

Recycling and Refuse Centre. “From April 1 to September 30 each year the centres will be open daily from 8am to 5pm with opening hours of 8am to 6pm daily between October 1 and March 31,” Cr Attwood said.

Eastern District Orchid Society (EDOS) THE Eastern District Orchid Society Inc. will hold its Annual Spring Show on Saturday, 21 September and Sunday, 22 September at the Bayside Uniting Church Hall, 420 Wondall Road, Manly West.

There are over 30 community gardens and city farms already established across Brisbane, with many of these found in different environments including on school and church grounds, at community centres and in parks.

Cr Bourke said residents interested in establishing a community garden were advised to look over the guide and contact Council if they needed additional help.

“Most community gardens can be found in church or school yards or within our parks, however residents interested in starting a garden can contact Council to discuss whether a piece of land is suitable,” he said.

“The guide runs through all the necessary factors that participants need to consider including the garden’s design, managing funds, access to water, grants and other assistance.” Cr Bourke said the Community Garden Guide covered everything from starting out to achieving a successful, productive garden. If a community group is interested in gardening on the land it should talk to local landowners including schools, community organisations and Council about land availability and the benefits a garden could bring to the local community.

AT our August meeting we held our Annual General Meeting and our Executive and Committee were elected unopposed. Ron Lord remains President and two new Committee members came on board. Also at this meeting we had a guest speaker, Cathy Chapman from the A.C.C.C. who gave a very informative presentation and handouts on various scams that are in

operation. We strongly recommend other branches to have them at their meetings.

Our monthly coach trip greeted us with a lovely sunny day to the Deer Farm for Christmas in July at Mt. Samson which was topped off with a great lunch and entertainment.

On the way there, we had a delicious morning tea at Roma Street Gardens and an unexpected visit from the Tour Guide who took a group of us on a very interesting walk through Colin Campbell Garden and explained about various flowers and shrubs (well worth a visit).

The coach trip for September is to Caloundra R.S.L. Approximately 50 members will be going to have a great day out. Our coach trips are on the 4th Tuesday of each month and are becoming so popular that we have to hire a 65 seater coach these days.

AUGUST has proved to be a very busy month for the members of Rochedale/Springwood National Seniors who have spent many hours carrying out charitable work prior to and during seniors week 2013. On Wednesday August 14th a group of sixteen members packed sample bags for Logan City Council for distribution on the “Logan Loves Seniors” day Tuesday August 20th. Members then staffed an information booth at Logan Entertainment Centre on the Tuesday handing out suitably packed sample bags promoting National Seniors Rochedale/Springwood Branch as well as National Seniors in general and this was met with a great amount of interest and it is hoped that this will see a rise in membership. The Wednesday August 21st meeting was well attended and following a short address by David Lin LNP candidate for the seat of Rankin members enjoyed a very informative address by Dr Heidi Muenchberger Neuropsychologist and research professor at Griffith University. Topics covered were Healthy Design of environments for active living- current trends and insights from two decades of research and development. Green fingered members will get some joy with a visit to Northey Street Garden Farm Windsor as part of the August monthly tour. There will be a one and a half hour experience in the permaculture system and various other forms in use during the visit. Metabolic rate slows with age, so keep walking.

Muscle mass - do some

exercise with weights at least once per week.

Bone density - as we age we very slowly lose bone density so do some weight training and stair stepping.

Fat gain - we tend to gain body fat so do some cardio vascular exercise to burn off this extra fat.

Flexibility - regular stretching exercises will help to keep you limbered up.

Strength - this is different from training for muscle mass; do shorter timed exercise and only do 4-6 repetitions.

Lung volume - to maintain or increase lung capacity, do deep breathing exercises, sitting up, lying down or running around.

Heart fitness - ten or twenty minutes of strenuous exercise will build cardiac reserve capacity.

Stair steps, cycling or swimming are better than jogging.

Relaxation is good for us.

Relaxation techniques or exercises reduce physical and emotional responses to stress and tension.

They are simple to learn and help our bodies cope with stress.

If practised regularly, relaxation techniques can lead to feeling more relaxed with an improved sense of wellbeing. There are a number of indicators pointing to stress. Included in the long list are difficulty sleeping or making ordinary decisions.

Crying for no apparent reason and/or lack of enthusiasm for anything.

There may be fast heartbeat, tense muscles or general fatigue.

There are ways to manage or even remove stress from your life. Set aside time for doing the techniques, a few minutes to begin with, and improve to 15 or 20 minutes two or three times per day.

Included in the techniques are: close your eyes and imagine a calm soothing scene and/or concentrate on your body and move muscle groups in a routine from feet to head.

Look after yourself by eating regular meals; drink about 2 litres of water per day. Exercise is good; get out into the fresh air whenever possible. A warm bath or shower can be calming and relaxes tense muscles. Remember to laugh and smile; it is not always easy, but it is always positive.

BREAST cancer survivors who have extensive surgery are four times more likely to develop the debilitating disorder arm lymphoedema, a QUT study has found. The findings in a new paper Incidence of unilateral arm lymphoedema after breast cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis published in the prestigious journal The Lancet Oncology, reveal the invasiveness of surgery to treat breast cancer increases the risk of developing arm lymphoedema. Lead author of the study Tracey DiSipio, from QUT’s Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, said women who had undergone an axillary lymph node dissection - an invasive surgery to remove lymph nodes under the arm - were four times more likely to suffer swollen or disfigured arms. She said this was compared to women who had received a sentinel lymph node biopsy. “Arm lymphoedema is typically characterised by swelling in one or both arms, caus-

ing pain, heaviness, tightness and a decreased range of motion,” Dr DiSipio said. “The appearance of the swollen or disfigured arms provides an ever-present reminder of breast cancer and often contributes to anxiety, depression and emotional distress in effected women.” Dr DiSipio said the study, a systematic review of the incidence of arm lymphoedema after breast cancer, also found that one in five women (21.4 per cent) would be diagnosed with the condition. “This is a significant research finding and provides us with the most accurate incidence rate to date,” she said.

“Until now the incidence rate has been reported anywhere from between zero to 94 per cent. With this information we can explore whether lymphoedema rates differ between breast cancer survivors.” Dr DiSipio said the study also pinpointed a number of risk factors linked to arm lymphoedema. “The risk factors increased when there was a lack of regular physical activity, or high body-mass index,” she said.

“These factors are potential targets for future prevention strategies or for more effective management of the disorder.” Dr DiSipio said the results of the study added weight to calls to integrate prospective surveillance of arm lymphoedema into standard breast cancer care.”Currently there are no standardised practices when it comes to detection and treatment of arm lymphoedema,” she said. “Given most patients present with the arm lymphoedema within the first two years after breast cancer, more frequent surveillance throughout this time is recommended.” Co-authors of the study, funded by The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Australia, were Sheree Rye, Beth Newman and Sandi Hayes.

LOCAL residents are being urged to take advantage of a quick, free and simple health check that could save your life.

During National Stroke Week and The Pharmacy Guild of Australia’s Queensland Branch will host health checks at participating pharmacies, community health centres and hospitals this National Stroke Week.

National Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Dr Erin Lalor urged locals to make the most of the free checks.

“Take five minutes out of your day and get your numbers checked, it may save your life,’’ Dr Lalor said.

Often known as the silent killer, because there may be no symptoms, high blood pressure is a key risk factor for stroke. The only way to know your blood pressure is to have it checked.

“Nearly four million Australian’s over 25 have high blood pressure, but many do not know it, putting their health and lives at risk,” Dr Lalor said.

By checking blood pressure and completing simple type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk assessments, pharmacists and health professionals will be able to help identify people who may be at risk of stroke and related conditions. Those at risk will be referred to their doctor for advice on how to lower their risk and to stay healthy.

“One in six people will have a stroke in their lifetime.

These people are you, your family, your friends, your colleagues. Yet only around half of Australians know the signs of stroke and one in 10 couldn’t spot a stroke if it happened right in front of them,’’ Dr Lalor said.

“Stroke is largely preventable and usually very simple to identify but most people simply don’t know enough about it.

“Get involved this National Stroke Week and unite with us to help raise awareness of stroke and encourage all Australians to take action to reduce their risk of stroke.”

Almost 800 pharmacies, community health centres and hospitals across Queensland will be conducting free ‘Know your numbers’ health checks this National Stroke Week. Maintaining healthy bladder & bowel habits

INCONTINENCE is one of the biggest health issues facing the nation, affecting one in four Australians over the age of 15 years. Incontinence is more prevalent than asthma (more than 2 million), anxiety disorders (2.3 million) and arthritis (3.1 million). Most people living with bladder and bowel weakness are reluctant to seek help, even from their doctor, despite research showing 60-70 per cent of cases can be cured or better managed.

The Continence Foundation of Australia predicts the number of people living with bladder and bowel problems will hit 6.5million by 2030, costing the nation billions of dollars annually.

It’s not a subject any of us like to discuss, but many of us, particularly as we age, start to have a few problems and it can seriously affect not only our social life but our overall health. As more and more Australians live longer incontinence issues grow.

There are many avenues for help with bladder and bowel problems. For most people, a good starting point is to visit your doctor. If you are making an appointment with your doctor, ask for a long consultation to give you time to explain the problem without feeling rushed. NORWAY is a land of fjords and mountains with some of the world’s most spectacular scenery. It is a long narrow country, often called the Land of the Vikings. For those short on time, a glimpse of this beautiful land can be obtained by taking a tour called Norway in a Nutshell. The tour can be done comfortably in one day or it can be split over two or more. It operates between Oslo and Bergen.

ing steadily through millions of pine trees with waterfalls sprouting from every orifice in the rocks.

Quaint isolated villages dot the hillsides. The highest point is at Finse, altitude 1222 metres. By then the trees have disappeared and the landscape is rocky and desolate. Perched high in the mountains is the Hardangerjokul glacier, its blue ice glittering in the sun. The train frequently goes through tunnels and avalanche shelters, both of which

tend to make photography somewhat haphazard. The train continues on to Bergen by the direct route but the tour takes a side track at Myrdal and joins another train for the incredible descent to Flam. This 20 km line, built in the 1930s, has 20 tunnels accounting for six kilometres of track. One tunnel corkscrews through 3600 as it descends steeply. Another tunnel has a window providing stunning views into the valley. It is an audacious feat of en-

gineering and is one of the world’s most attractive and spectacular railway lines.

A stop is made to view the mighty Kjos Waterfall, right alongside the track.

As sightseers alight, music begins playing from hidden speakers and a “nymph” in a red dress begins dancing on the rocks. She pops down behind one rock and magically reappears in a different place. It is almost surreal but very interesting.

Endless waterfalls and steep ravines mark the valley sides on the approach to Flam. The Rjoande waterfall has a sheer drop of 140 metres.

Tiny farms eke out an existence in the harsh and isolated environment, smoke trailing from chimneys. Flam has about 450 inhabitants. It is a port on the Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the even bigger Sognefjord which is Norway’s deepest and longest fjord, 1308 metres deep and 204km long.

Tourists join a ferry which makes its sedate way down the pristine waters of the fjord, passing a few quaint villages. The scenery is just magnificent – sheer-sided rock walls hundreds of metres high plunge straight into the clear water. The route turns into another fjord, Naeroyfjord, one of the narrowest in Europe. The whole fjord is a conservation area on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.

The ferry terminates at Gudvangen where yet more waterfalls cascade dizzy distances down smooth rock faces. The tour then proceeds by bus, ascending steeply to a picturesque hotel perched high over the valley. One section, just 1.5km long has 13 hairpin bends with the bus almost scraping the rocks on one side and seeming to protrude over the sheer drop on the other – quite scary!

At Voss the tour rejoins the main railway to Bergen. This town offers year-round skiing, rafting, horse riding, skydiving and helicopter rides. The final leg to Bergen passes many pretty lakes as the train goes through more tunnels on its descent to sea level.

The tour is not exactly cheap at around $AUD250 but it is guaranteed to provide many lasting memories. It is a long day but every minute is treasured.

“A DAY at Australia Zoo” On a perfect August winters day, members of the Redcliffe City Mixed Probus Club went by coach to the Australia Zoo at Steve Irwin Way, Beerwah.

A few of our senior friends enjoyed a private cuddle with a koala, while the more adventurists held a small alligator or python in their arms. In fact, Australia Zoo has an animal encounter to suit everyone. For most of us we had been here before at the start of the Steve Irwin dream. However, today people see and experience numerous changes with an

expanded area to house over 1200 animals. There are new exciting and educational shows, full of wildlife action and adventure.

Showtime at midday in the large arena called the Crocoseum was a great spectacle. There was a bit of walking between attractions, but the frequent shuttle service was a great help to get around. 1995 - My son, Nick and I answered the call for an experimental ‘alternate’ three weeks in South India, with a regular tour tripper, testing travel reactions in his favourite retreats, with casual holiday daily itinerary, through the smells, sights, sounds of steamy heavily populated Madras at 3am.

We headed west on a crowded ‘rattler’ private compartments and open space for Hindus heading west to a well-known Ashram, via canal boat.

We were en route to a Kerala Franciscan Ayurvedic Hospital, herb plantation and backyard styled nature remedies.

After health lectures, we

ventured into an old army tank part, hot water connected to a pipe running from a wood stove cauldron to provide us with a sauna experience! A short walk to a rugged style coffee shack, mountain view, gave us a local brew on the popular condensed milk, served on trains by tea-men on all travel routes.

A nearby tailor whipped up an Indian cotton ‘relaxer’ two piece convict styled suit (minus the arrows!) and I could purchase multi-coloured cotton sari cloth for modest wear to the ankles - tricky on my elephant ride!!

A tropical forest provides a tranquil retreat, with palms and large native and exotic trees reaching for the sky, while a succulent display adds a hint of Mexico and a potager adds some lovely old-fashioned charm. Teas and light refreshments will be available and plants will be for sale. The owners will donate their proceeds to Samaratin’s Purse.

More caravans and less parks means a camp shortage

THE caravan park sector of the Australian accommodation industry currently provides 50 per cent of total domestic bed capacity.

However, there is a gradual decline in establishments while at the same time a resurgence in registrations of new recreational vehicles (RVs). The number of campervans and motor homes specifically increased 19 per cent over the past five years. The contrasting trends are predicted to create a serious accommodation shortage within the caravan park sector.

Rod Caldicott from Southern Cross University’s School of Tourism and Hospitality Management is researching the topic for his PhD. A research paper, co-authored

by Pascal Scherrer, was recently published in the Journal of Vacation Marketing. ”The development of caravanning in Australia is at an interesting crossroads in its evolutionary cycle,” Mr Caldicott said. ”On the one hand caravan manufacturing is experiencing rapid growth. The sector peaked in 1975 with an annual output of 37,000 units. For a variety of reasons this fell to lows of 5000 units in 1991 and it wasn’t until 1995 that the sector started to recover. For the past 17 years the industry has grown and now produces more than 23,000 units per year. ”Furthermore, there was a 257 per cent increase in the decade from 1995 to 2005 in caravan registrations. ”Unfortunately caravan parks have been declining over the same period driven predominantly by a conversion in coastal areas of beachfront land to high rise units and hotels. However, the sector still provides 50 per cent of total domestic bed capacity and in 2009 generated more than $1.1 billion in annual takings providing direct employment to more than 3500 full time and part-time employees. ”Short and long term site capacity of parks decreased by eight and 13 per cent respectively between 2000 to 2009.”

Mr Caldicott used the Tweed Shire, on the Far North Coast of NSW, as a case study. He found that in many respects the Tweed parks were mirroring national trends.

ONE of the joys of holidays surely must be having beautiful meals.

Alexander Dumas who wrote The three Musketeers and The count of Monte Cristo also wrote a cook book called Grand Dictionnaire de Cuisine. My tour in France certainly took in some interesting places to eat. I make no apologies for naming restaurants and of course I’m only going to remember the good ones.

The first to come to mind is the La Couronne in Rouen. The ambience needs to equal the food and that certainly applied there. Said to be the oldest ‘inn’ in France it was founded in 1345. The walls were lined with photos of famous people who have eaten there. I could see photos of Sophia Loren, Salvador Dali, Princess Grace of Monaco, Lord Mountbaten,Gary Cooper and surprising I noticed at least two pictures of John Wayne.

And the famous cook book author, American Julia Child came in 1948.

Alas I don’t always make a note of menus, but I did that night. We started with champagne, then there was a small serve of creamy cheese with two rolls ( and French bread is to die for). Then came a lobster seafood salad, a sorbet with calvados, turbot cooked in butter served with slivers of white asparagus, then the cheese. I chose a brie.

There was desert of course but I didn’t make a note of it. Then finally we had petit fours, with tea /coffee. And of course all served with wine. Not only beautiful food but ambience as well and attentive waiters.

We also had some lunches included,we had a very good quiche lorraine one day and why wouldn’t that be good.

Rabbit another, and chicken cooked in cider and I’m sure cream was added.

In Bayeax, where dinner wasn’t included some of us went to a small restaurant where Scallops St Jacques were served in orange sauce. By this time we had learnt of drink called pomme and I thoroughly enjoyed that with the scallops.

When lunching on my own on a couple of days ( in Honfleur and St Malo) I had mussels which are traditionally served with French fries and crusty bread. I believe that the mussels served in the South of France are better. Never the less I was happy. I guess although one is served a huge pot of them they are not very filling and so the “chips” were necessary as a side dish. Another lone lunch was at the Cafe Marly in Paris. It looked a bit “posh’ and overlooked the pyramid in front of the Louvre. My table was right beside the window, ideal for people watching.

I had walked all morning so was happy to sit for as long as possible. I only ordered a glass of wine

and club sandwiches, which were excellent. And the position I was in certainly had ambience.

Before I finish eating in France, I’d like to take a detour to the Channel Islands, where in Guernsey, the hotel served a beautiful breakfast. Great bowls of fruit were on the servery, not any old fruit.

There were strawberries raspberries and blue berries and small jars of the most superb yoghurt. As well as the usual juices there was beetroot juice, which I found quite good.

I could have ordered a cooked breakfast, but chose to finish off with Croissants and a pot of coffee, served with hot milk on the side. This dining room certainly had ambiance as well.

We had dinner at two famous places in Paris La Coupole and Le Procope.

The former, in the Montparnasse quarter, claims to be the temple of art deco, the pillasters are adorned with paintings by “minor masters” of the Roaring Twenties . It opened in 1927. Patrons included Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Dali and I guess all those who showed up in the movie “ Midnight in Paris”. Although the restaurant was packed the food was quite good. Some of our group

tried to book for the following night, but it was fully booked .

Le Procope opened in 1686 and it is said to be the oldest in the world, and of course many favourite people have been customers including Voltaire and Oscar Wilde and even Napoleon The restaurant was refurbished in 1988 in the 18th c style. We had a private dining room and for us it was the final night of the tour. The place certainly had ambience. The main course of coq au vin was served from large pots from a side table.

We did have another memorable meal, for lunch, but a fairly formal one at that.

the end of the tour we dined at Pavillon Henry IV in St Germain-en-Laye.

The sun king Louis XIV was born in one of the salons of the Pavillon. It was converted into a hotel restaurant in the mid 19 th century. Famous guests include George Sand, Victor Hugo and Emile Zola. There was a lovely panoramic view over Paris, and we had a private room. I didn’t keep a note of the whole menu, but the main course was duck, served with sauteed apple and pear. It would be remiss

of me not to mention another memorable meal I had while on my own in London. I had decided to walk along the south bank of the Themes. I think it is called Queens Walk which took me back to Lambeth where I was staying. One has to be select when eating alone, and there were many eating places. By the film museum there was a large restaurant and I could see a vacant table by the sidewalk. Table for one and yes I was shown to the place I had spied. A lovely waitress brought

me a glass of wine and a meal of “Romney Marsh lamb chops” served with potatoes. “Be careful it is very hot”,she said. Beautifully tender lamb and the potatoes not much larger than a large marble. They were served in a small cast iron pan all steeped in butter. I lingered watching the crowd before continuing on my way back to Captain Bligh’s B & B. So yes it is good to get home where the showers always work, where one can understand the language. But alas one HAS to cook.

The Mill Colonnade, the quintessential symbol of Karlovy Vary

GOLDEN Prague is unquestionably the principal jewel in the crown of the Czech towns but the Czech lands have many more delights to offer. Undiscovered by many foreign tourists are the magnificent spa towns with their curative benefits and individual charms. The biggest, best known and perhaps the most glamorous is Karlovy Vary, also known under its German name Carlsbad.

Karlovy Vary which is situated about 125km west of Prague was founded in the 14th century by Czech King Charles IV. The town’s fame spans many centuries and is based on the curative powers of its mineral waters. It also has a rich inspirational and cultural tradition.

It was visited and admired bymany prominent people including Tsar Peter the Great, Bismarck, Ataturk, Goethe and Beethoven. Today the town frequently hosts many international exhibitions, festivals and cultural events.

The current art nouveau and pseudorenaissance face of Karlovy Vary was

given to it at the end of the 19th century.

The magnificent town centre is a marvel of spa architecture. The central promenade is a fairy tale display of spa colonnades and well restored buildings dotted with shops, galleries, cafes and restaurants. The largest and the best known colonnade is the Mill Colonnade which houses several mineral water dispensaries and an orchestra podium.The most famous mineral spring is the Vridlo( Hot Spring) also known as the Sprudel. Hot mineral water which comes from a depth of about 2000m finishes in a geyser that gushes several meters high above the ground.

In Karlovy Vary “taking the waters” is the thing to do. Stroll around sipping the freely dispensed mineral water from specially designed cups. Some waters do taste strange but history and many famous people will attest that the waters are good for you. As well tea or coffee and cake at the magnificent Grant Hotel Pupp is a must.There are also many lovely parks and the town is surrounded by woods with many kilometres of hiking tracks.

Karlovy Vary is only a bus trip away from Prague and takes about two hours and twenty minutes each way. There is an old Czech saying; “Many roads lead to the Czech lands but for those in search of health all roads lead to Czech spas.”If you visit the Czech lands time spent in Karlovy Vary will not disappoint.

Travel Tips ONE of the great joys of being an older person is having time and freedom and that includes freedom to travel. The vast majority of older people with and without chronic medical problems can travel safely! However, a few common sense precautions can help to make sure that your trip is everything you planned!

Ask your doctor about your medical condition(s), and run your itinerary by him or her if you have concerns. Older adults do tend to have a bit more chronic medical problems than younger folks, and these should be taken into account. For example, hiking in the Swiss Alps may not be ideal for patients with severe arthritis of the knees or hips; patients with advanced emphysema would want to avoid high altitudes such as the Rocky Mountains.

Take enough of your medicines in their original bottles with you, as well as a list of your chronic medical problems.

‘The People’s Gallery’ launched with 50 Plus Centre artwork LORD Mayor Graham Quirk officially launched The People’s Gallery on Sunday, 18 August, with more than 100 art enthusiasts going along to admire the wide range of work on display.

The Lord Mayor said the exhibition by 50 Plus Centre members was very well received on opening day. “Brisbane’s senior citizens play a significant role in our city’s social, business, creative and cultural life and this exhibition is a great way to celebrate these contributions,” Cr Quirk said. “The exhibition featured more than 40 paintings, including still life, landscapes and portraits, with prices ranging from $50 to $350 - the first painting sold within the first hour of the event.” The artwork that sold within the first hour of the gallery opening was a still life entitled ‘Bauhinias’, by 50 Plus Centre art class member, Faye Laing. Cr Quirk said after the exhibition finished on Friday, 23 August, The People’s Gallery would become a public gallery space for not-for-profit community organisations.

The 50 Plus Centre is open to south east Queensland residents over 50 years of age, pensioners and benefit receivers. The Centre offers a variety of low-cost activities. CARINA Leagues Club is pleased to report its $10 million expansion and refurbishment works are on track with the new gaming lounge scheduled to open in November. Mitchelton abnd Districts Garden Club

ON Thursday, 3rd October, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club Inc. meets at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, corner of Wardell and Trundle Streets, Enoggera. The guest speaker is Bob Moore and the topic is Arts and Crafts. Many years ago Bob dealt with this topic for the garden club. Everyone present was delighted with what he said and did. At that time he was teaching Arts and Crafts at various nursing homes and it helped the residents immensely. Besides knitting and

crochetting and skills with an artist’s brush, Bob demonstrated and displayed samples of broom stick crochet.

You can imagine how fast an article done in broomstick crochet would increase in size and the magical effect that resulted. Bob is always happy to share his knowledge and expertise. Those who attended his previous talk went home with lots of patterns and new ideas, so if you can, come along to this meeting on 3rd October. The meeting commences with morning tea at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. The hall is accessible by wheelchair and close to public transport. Redlands wildlife on show

The Redlands’ reputation as a haven for wildlife is set to go international with a Japanese documentary team filming in the city.

Japanese director Shotaro Tsuji was in the Redlands in July to document local wildlife conservation and rescue operations.

The film, Mystery Australia, will be shown on Japanese television later this year.

It visits the Redlands property of Koala Action Group member Jenny Anthony, home to koalas and kangaroos and part of two Redland City Council habitat protection programs – Land for Wildlife and a Voluntary Conservation Agreement.

The documentary will also highlight the dedicated efforts of the Redlands’ after-hours Wildlife Ambulance service, with a crew accompanying its nightshift volunteers on a rescue.

Japanese production company CP International said it selected the Redlands for the documentary because of its koala conservation efforts.

Redland City Council spokesman for the environment Councillor Paul Gleeson said this was recognition of the Redlands progressive attitude towards wildlife conservation, particularly in looking after its koala population.

“Council took over the operation of the after-hours Wildlife Ambulance in 1998 and our officers co-ordinate this service,’’ Cr Gleeson said.

“But it relies on the hard work and dedication of the caring volunteers who work through the night to save injured and distressed wildlife. These volunteers are extremely passionate and dedicated, with many of them also having full-time jobs.’’

Cr Gleeson said Redland City Council was committed to programs to encourage and assist residents to enhance habitat for koalas and other wildlife.

“The most important of these is the Koala Conservation Agreement Program, which is a partnership between landholders and the council to plant, manage and maintain koala trees on their property,’’ Cr Gleeson said.

“Our Parks and Conservation officers are responsible for restoring and maintaining habitat in the city’s parks and conservation areas, as well as identifying and planting corridors to provide movement and connectivity.

“For all this to draw the attention of international documentary makers is very satisfying.’’

ST HUGH’S Community Dancers held a HOBO Dance Night in June. Here are some of the dancers in costume.

SENIORS NEWS And then it is winter

READ slowly, and these provoking thoughts will make you stop and think about life in our seniors years.

You know - time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my wife and yet in a way it seems like eons ago and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But here it is - The Winter of My Life and it catches me by surprise. How did I get here so fast?

Where did the years go and where did my youth go?

I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. But here it is - my friends are retired and getting grey.

They move slower and I see an older person now.

Some are in better and some in worse shape than me, but I see the great change not like the ones I remember who were young and vibrant but like me their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we’d be.

Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn’t done – things I should have done – but indeed there are many things I’m happy to have done. It’s all in a lifetime. So, if you are not in your winter yet let me remind you that it will be here faster than you think.

So whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly. Don’t put things off too long!!

Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life so, live for the day and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember.

Hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!! Life is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one. Live it well, enjoy today and do something fun. Be happy, have a great day. Remember - It is health that is real wealth. Live happy in 2013. Lastly consider the following. Today is the oldest you’ve ever been, yet the youngest you’ll ever be, so enjoy this day while it lasts. Your kids are becoming you – but your grandchildren are perfect! Going out is good - coming home is better! You forget names. But that is OK because other people forget they even know you! The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don’t care to do them anymore. You tend to use more four letter words, what, when? What used to be freckles are now liver spots. But Old is good in some things; Old Songs, Old movies and best of all old friends. Descendants of families are known to havelivedin the SE Queensland areas at Kedron, Nundah, Wynnum, Caboolture, Toowoomba,

Highfields,and Darling Downs etc but have also lived elsewhere in Australia.

Do you have any likeness to Wilhelm Friedrich Hovey from around 1920.
