SENIORS NEWS Oldest Banyo RSL member takes Anzac Day salute at 96 THE Banyo RSL sub branch ran a successful march and memorial service at the Banyo War Memorial on Anzac Day. The President of the Banyo RSL sub branch Ron Virgen OAM bestowed the honour of taking the salute to the oldest member of the Banyo sub branch Roy Corrie

aged 96. It is estimated that over 1000 people attended the service this year.Roy Corrie was originally dairy farming in the Canungra area. However drought and the depression made this unviable so he moved to Silkwood in north Queensland in the depression years and worked in cane cutting.

This paid the sum of around £10 a week which was considered a significant wage at that time. In around 1934, Roy first joined the Light Horse based at Canungra and soon transferred to the AIF based at Grovely in Brisbane where he trained for around 8-9 months until about the end of

1934. He was aged around 19 at the time. He later went back on the land farming and re-joined the services on 2 June 1941 when Australia was at war.He was posted to the Middle East and based in Lebanon. He later did two postings to Papua New Guinea including the Kokoda Track where the

married another person. However soon after that he did marry Elfreda Filby who had been in the services and was from Proserpine. They married on Valentine’s Day 1948. Elfreda passed away in 2002.In civilian life, Roy drove tankers for BP and later worked at the Brisbane airport refuelling aeroplanes. His interests included lawn bowls and tennis. He was a member of the Banyo Bowls Club for 43 years. When working for BP, he played tennis in Melbourne r e p r e s e n t i n g Queensland BP employees against other states. Until his relocation to a Kedron nursing home in February this year, Roy lived in the Banyo in various homes in the same area for around 55 years.The Banyo RSL sub branch and Citizens’ Auxiliary wish Roy all the best for many more years to come.
