So many books, so little time!

by Gill MacDonald AS children, most of us were read to by our parents, as we snuggled under the covers. Classics such as Kipling’s Just So Stories, Kenneth Grahame’s Wind in the Willows, the adventures of Snugglepot & Cuddlepie or tales about Blinky Bill transported us to a magical and different world.

Times have changed, but books and reading are still an important part of our lives; books still inform, entertain and challenge people of all ages. Some time ago, traditional paper books morphed into talking books or large print texts so that more people had access to reading.

Nowadays, modern technology has given us digital books with the e-reader and kindle, so that

we can travel around without the need to take several paper books with us.

This year, designated the National Year of Reading, will allow everyone to share their passion for reading and discover new sources of literary enjoyment.

Reading events will be taking place around Australia and online this year. Libraries will be embracing this opportunity to showcase authors, celebrate the wealth of reading material in their branches, and support and encourage residents in developing their literacy skills.

In addition to a wide range of events, each month Libraries will focus on a particular reading theme. In March the spotlight will be on tales of multi-culturalism and travel. Check out your local library for all the activities available.

IPSWICH City Council has given further support to a low-cost taxi service available in Ipswich to assist the city’s senior citizens and community members with a disability and their carers.

Ipswich City Council Youth and Seniors Committee Chairperson Councillor Sheila Ireland said council’s City Heart Cabs program was supporting the needs of these local residents to access Redbank Plaza, Riverlink and Ipswich City Square at a minimal cost.

was initially trialled late last year and had been so successful that it was now being extended by council until the end of the current financial year in June.

She said the service operated in the suburbs surrounding Redbank Plaza including Redbank, Redbank Plains, Collingwood Park, Bellbird Park, Goodna and Riverview and was a partnership between council, Redbank Plaza and Yellow Cabs.

This service is funded

by Redbank Plaza centre management.

To use the Redbank Plaza service call Yellow Cabs on 3363 2373 before midday on the day before travel. The next morning at about 9am, passengers will be picked up and taken to Redbank Plaza. At 12.30 pm, passengers will then be collected from a designated pick-up area and taken home.

Cr Ireland said the Ipswich service was launched in January last year and was currently funded until June this

year as part of a range of senior and disability initiatives in council’s 2011-2012 Budget.

“We have been receiving wonderful feedback about these services and are pleased to be able to offer them to the community.”

Cr Ireland said she urged eligible residents to take advantage of the service.

“This service is designed to support those in the community who might be without transport of their own and help them get out an about in Ipswich.”

Residents residing in Basin Pocket, Churchill, Coalfalls, East Ipswich, Eastern Heights, Ipswich, Leichhardt, Moores Pocket, Newtown, North Ipswich, One Mile, Raceview, Sadliers Crossing, Tivoli, West Ipswich and Woodend are able to access the Ipswich City Heart Cabs service.

“Each Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, people on a full aged pension and those with a disability residing in the

service area can travel to Riverlink or Bell Street at Ipswich City Square for $2 each way,” she said.

To use the Ipswich service call Yellow Cabs on 3363 2373 before midday on the day before travel. The next morning at about 9am, passengers will be picked up and taken to either Riverlink or Ipswich City Square. At 12.30 pm, passengers will then be collected from a designated pickup area and taken home.

“Disabled seniors on the full pension and their carers can access low cost transport to and from their local shopping centre.

“To access the City Hearts program people also need to reside in one of the participating suburbs.”

THE State Library of Queensland has offered advice to those affected by this season’s floods on how to salvage their family’s keepsakes.

The State Library has developed online preservation guides for those Queenslanders affected by flood for quick and simple intervention to potentially save their treasured photographs, books, papers, artworks and videos.

State Library Manager of Collection Preservation Grant Collins said the key to saving family treasures was not to panic and start with the most valuable.

“It is a devastating and emotional time for those affected by floods and people may throw out their cherished possessions damaged by water, believing they are lost forever,” Mr Collins said.

“However, there are some simple actions that can be taken to save these items, such as washing off mud and contamination with clean water and careful drying.

“Sealing water-damaged items inside a plastic bag in a household freezer will buy time to salvage them later. This will minimise the risk of mould which can form on family treasures within 48 hours.

“The key to recovering most items is to clean and get them dry as quickly as possible.”

Mr Collins said that the State Library has an experienced conservation team who use specialised techniques to maintain and preserve Queensland’s historic collections for future generations.

“The State Library’s preservation team offers expert advice to anyone who has salvaged water damaged possessions, such as books, art works, documents, films, audiovisual materials and photographs,” Mr Collins said.

Saddle up for Easter to help the Leukaemia Foundation BOOKINGS are now open for the Blackbutt Charity Ride for Leukaemia over this year’s Easter long weekend.

Organisers, Trail Riding Australia, have planned a funfilled family event that will start at Blackbutt and take riders along the beautiful Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.

Jill Batty of the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland, said the aim of the weekend was to give riders a picturesque but challenging ride and allow them to raise funds through sponsorships and donations.

“This Charity Ride is primarily to raise much needed

funds for the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland, but also for participants to ride safely, have fun and meet new people who have the one common bond – the love of horses,” she said.

“The weekend event starts on Good Friday at the Blackbutt Showgrounds with rides starting at 8.30am on Saturday and Sunday.

“The first 32km ride will be to Taromeo Station where there will be a saddlebag lunch followed by a return ride on part of the old Moore to Blackbutt rail link.

“Sunday’s 31km ride will be from Blackbutt Showgrounds to Yarraman and back.”

Ms Batty said registration for the event costs $50 and participants were expected to raise a minimum of $200 each for the Leukaemia Foundation. Registrations close Friday 23 March.

I HAVE had the pleasure of meeting famous English actor Donald Sinden on several occasions. In 1992 he was in Australia for a play titled Out of Order and he starred opposite comedian Ronnie Corbett.

I went to his hotel room and we recorded a radio interview about his career and the play. I remember being at the opening night party and meeting Ronnie Corbett.

Then in 2002 he was back in Australia for a season of The Hollow

Crown with Sir Derek Jacobi, Ian Richardson and Dame Diana Rigg.

What a marvellous show that was. Once again I had the pleasure of recording another radio interview in his hotel room.

By that time he had been knighted and I remember him saying, “When we first found out that I was to be a “Sir” my wife said – Oh my God, we’ll have to change all of our credit cards.”

Donald Alfred Sinden was born in 1923 and after studying acting

made his professional debut onstage in 1941.

He married actress Diana Mahony in 1948 and they had two sons. His film credits include The Cruel Sea, Mogambo, Doctor in the House, Above Us The Waves, and Doctor at Large. I enjoyed talking to him about his role in Doctor in the House where he played Tony Benskin opposite Dirk Bogarde.

It was great to also talk about Mogambo and his memories of working with Grace Kelly and Clark Gable. Sir Donald

said that he thought Clark Gable was more of a “technician” than an actor.

His first love is the theatre and Sir Donald has performed in hundreds of plays. He is proud of his work with The Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford Upon Avon.

In 1975 he played the butler in the series Two’s Company opposite American actress Elaine Stritch and in 1981 starred in Never the Twain with Windsor Davies.

His two sons followed him in the theatre, Marc Sinden is a West End theatre producer and Jeremy Sinden was a wonderful actor. Sadly Jeremy passed away in 1996 and Donald’s wife

Diana passed away in 2004.

He has written two books - A Touch of the Memoirs and Laughter in the Second Act. In 2007 Sir Donald Sinden was touring a one man show reminiscing about his career in showbusiness. In recent times he has played guest roles in television series such as Midsomer Murders and Miss Marple.

He is very proud of his grandchildren. A great British actor - Sir Donald Sinden.

Increases in public transport fares

PUBLIC transports costs have soared. The most recent price rise, which took effect on January 2 this year, increased the fares by 15% across the board. This makes us the third most expensive place in the world to travel via public transport, behind London and Oslo.

Single paper tickets also continue to be 30% higher than Go Card fares.

Queensland Transport also introduced a few sweeteners to try to soften the blow.

All commuters can travel free after ten Go Card journeys in one week (Monday to Sunday).

There is a 20% discount for off-peak journeys.

SENIORS NEWS Peggy unburdened by age

Peggy Wright turned 104 on 7 January 2012. She has moved countries, being born in New Zealand and after living in London, Switzerland and Germany as a young woman, Peg made Australia home.

Peg now lives at the Morayfield Seniors Rental Accommodation complex. We wish Peggy many more years of good health and happiness.

Clifford House garage sale

FURNITURE, bric-a-brac and plants are some of the items on offer at Clifford House Care Centre’s upcoming garage sale.

Taking place on Saturday, March 10th, from 7am to noon, at the Queensland Baptist Care centre in Wooloowin, the proceeds will go towards the running costs of Clifford House and activities for its residents.

A spokesperson said that the garage sale will take place in the front car park, with a wide range of items donated by staff, residents and the families of residents on display.

Staff at Clifford House are passionate about caring for people and regularly organise fun and engaging activities for residents such as in-house concert performances, outings and trips.

A ‘Cafe Clifford’ morning also takes place once or twice a month where residents and their families are invited to enjoy a concert along with special coffees and cakes.

HOW many of us really know or take an interest in our heritage? Our oldest buildings often harbour the little-known but vibrant history of early European settlement. Much of it gives us a glimpse into the fascinating world of our past and some of it reminds us of the gruesome and hard life experienced by our convict ancestors.

When you next visit Brisbane, take a stroll in the city and you can visit some of its living history.

Built by convicts in 1829, the splendid Commissariat Store is the oldest building in Brisbane. Located at 115 William Street, the building faces the Brisbane River. Today the Commissariat Store is the headquarters of the Royal Historical Society of Queensland and houses a museum where you can explore many interesting artefacts and Brisbane memorabilia on display.

This old building is a reminder of Queensland’s days as a convict settlement. The two original storeys of the Commissariat Stores were constructed by convict labour under the direction

of the Moreton Bay Penal Colony’s harsh Commandant, Captain Logan.

Logan was hated by the convicts due to his strict discipline and program of punishments.

As Brisbane grew, so did the building, and more was added. The Commissariat Store is one of Brisbane’s most significant buildings and much of the history of early Brisbane can be traced in the building itself. Tour guides interpret the build-

ing and the displays it contains, to give visitors a vivid insight into the lives of the many different people of the past who created our present.

The Commissariat Store is open for visitors daily between 10am - 4pm Tuesday to Friday, but is closed on Public Holidays. Admission is $5.00 and concession/child $3.00. Group tours are welcome by prior arrangement. Contact 07 3221 4198.

Brisbane Seniors Online kicks off 2012 Q & A programme

Brisbane Seniors Online (BSOL) commenced the first of 15 planned question and answer (Q & A) sessions for 2012 at the Bracken Ridge Library on Friday 3 February. These events are to be held monthly throughout Brisbane and Redlands with 5 additional daily sessions being held on Monday to Friday during Seniors Week in August.

a new learner and is pictured below with a number of BSOL volunteer mentors. Ms Abel who had previously been a stenographer in her working life said that ‘she was looking forward to getting assistance from BSOL with many aspects of computer use.’ The Q & A programme gives interested people over 50 the opportunity to hear about the benefits of becoming a volunteer

mentor or a new learner with BSOL. The sessions also give attendees a chance to ask computer related questions which the BSOL mentors will do their utmost to answer.

BSOL provides computer training on a one-on-one basis in learner’s own homes on their own computer or in small classes if preferred. The curriculum covers basic aspects of computer use including internet, internet security,

email and word processing. However it can be flexible to suit individual existing skills and what they want to learn. Membership fees are low and affordable.

Membership for mentors and support volunteers is free. Additional training and workshops on advanced computer use and other devices such as mobile phones, tablets, digital and video photography are available. Advanced learners may be offered places at some of these sessions.

BSOL will also have an information stall at the two day Kedron Wavell Services Club Ageing Expo at Chermside in March.

This is a free event and will be held in the Blue Pacific and Southern Cross Rooms on the first floor of the Club. The Expo will run from 9:30am to 4pm on Sunday 4 March and 9:30am3:30pm on Monday 5 March.

All events are free with tea and coffee provided. Bookings are essential and a maximum of 40 places are available.

In the evening the love birds attended a Valentine’s Day Ball at St Paul’s along with around 60 residents from other local aged care services.

The couple live alongside each other in co-located facilities at the service and believe the secret ingredients to a happy marriage are good communication, team work and mutual care.

“We understand each other and always talk matters over and work as a team,” Hugh said.

“You can’t have your own way all the time and you should try and do the right thing between you as a couple and be supportive,” Joyce said.

The duo met in England

when Hugh served in the 464th squadron flying a Mosquito in bombing raids over Germany in World War II. Joyce worked as a Women’s Auxiliary Force clerk at the airbase.

After surviving the depression and leaving England behind, the war bride had to adapt to isolated conditions in Normanton, a small cattle town in Northwest Queensland’s Gulf Country. It was there she baked her own bread and waded across the flooded Norman River to reach the hospital to give birth to her first child.

After Hugh’s 72 flights during World War II, he was awarded with the

Distinguished Flying Cross and excerpts from his diary were featured in a book called The Gestapo Hunters by Mark Lax and Leon KaneMaguire.

Hugh and Joyce have three children and three grandchildren. Their eldest grand-daughter has carried on the flying tradition as a squadron leader with the Royal Australian Air Force.

St Paul’s Lutheran Aged Care Executive Director of Nursing Maggie Hepple said St Paul’s has many couples on site still remaining together.

“We think it is vital to cater for couple’s in line with their changing health needs,” she said.

A little boy went up to his father and asked: “Dad, where did my intelligence come from?”

The father replied. “Well, son, you must have got it from your mother, cause I still have mine.”

AS opportunities to mount historical displays at public events and for guest speaking engagements during 2012 continue to grow, the month of March brings us more immediate concerns.

Firstly there is the quarterly issue of our newsletter Enoggera & Districts Times.

Through this newsletter we keep in touch with not only our members but also our fellow local and family history societies through the metropolitan area; copies also go to public libraries, local members and the many visitors to our research facility.

As editor, naturally my focus is on our society and local history but I try to include what I term the bigger picture; anniversaries of momentous events that have shaped our world. This current issue recalls The War of 1812, The Titanic Disaster, the General Strike in Brisbane, the bombing of Darwin and the release fifty years ago of the Beatle’s first track.

Sunday March 26 is the date of our AGM. For that day our guest speaker is local historian Rod MacIver who will give an electronically enhanced presentation on the Banks Street Reserve; visitors and prospective new members are most welcome.

Our research facility at Enoggera Memorial Hall is open every Thursday from 9.30 until 1pm, the first Saturday afternoon of each month between 1-4pm and at other times by arrangement. FIRST bus trip for the year was to visit Dolphins Football Club venue at Redcliffe. The weather was perfect for St Valentine’s Day. Our President, Colin, proved he really is a romantic at heart as the ladies were presented with a lovely long stemmed red rose to mark the day.

The musical program at Dolphins was enjoyed by all and lunch was a winner from all accounts. On the trip home, all were treated to an icecream.

How’s that for a day out with our Club?

The outing for 13th March is a “Mystery” trip. The bus will leave the Hall at 8.30 am that day. If you can’t make it for March, how about joining us on the 10th April for a River Cruise on the Mirimar.

Morning Tea and a two course lunch is included.

Concerts are held at the Hall at the corner of Clifton and Fleurs Streets, Annerley on the 1st, 3rd and 4th Tuesday of each month.

SENIORS NEWS Redcliffe City Mixed Probus Club

FOR Friendship, Fellowship and Fun - The Redcliffe City Mixed Probus Club now meets on the first Tuesday of each month 9-15am for 9-45am start, at the Moreton Bay Boat Club, Bird of O’Passage Parade, Scarborough.

Our Tour Director, Jenny, is a great organiser - our recent tour which saw us indoors enjoying ourselves on our Caloundra RSL tour. Good work Jenny.

After a short stop on the way at Franz Smallgoods, we arrived at the RSL and were greeted with the usual friendly faces, then ushered to our tables.

Tasty warm muffins and tea and coffee revived our spark and promoted an urge in some to go and press buttons and wait for welcome noises from those dreaded machines called - pokies.

The RSL had a wonderful array of goods displayed for raffle prizes and a few in our group were lucky enough to win small gifts. When you’re having fun like Probians do, time passes very quickly - next thing you know we were filling our tummies once again with a satisfying lunch of roast meat and veges or fish and veges.

A band called Feral Swingcats from Sydney provided vocal and instrumental numbers during morning tea and lunch. Special guest performers, duo Stuart French and Camille Te Nahu from Tasmania entertained us for approximately one and a half hours - both vocally and with guitar and gave wonderful renditions of semi-old favourites, as well as their own compositions All too soon it was time to board our coach and return to our beautiful Redcliffe. I’m sure our visitors see the camaraderie and can’t wait to join our club.

Sherwood Probus Club THE Sherwood Probus Club was formed in July 2000 and its aim is to promote Fun, Fellowship and Friendship among local retirees. We meet at the Sherwood Districts AFL Club (Magpies) Chelmer St East, Chelmer, at 10am on the third Friday of each month (except December), where we have a meeting to discuss activities, followed by morning tea and an interesting speaker.

We are a very friendly and caring club.

Carindale National Seniors

CARINDALE National Seniors returned for our first meeting on 13th February with an attendance of 106 members and visitors & 22 apologies.

The new and prospective members were welcomed by Vice President Ann & were made welcome.

A number of our members are not well and we wish them a speedy recovery.

Our final meeting for 2011 was a wonderful meeting with guest speaker Kay Danes who was one of our best and informative speakers and we wish her well in all her endeavours.

The guest speaker for February was Peter Shelton who spoke on “natural areas of Queensland”.

This was well received and the beautiful photos of Queensland

scenery. The bus trip for February 28th is to the old time movies at Pomona.

We are looking forward to a very successful year with old and new faces at our meetings, wonderful friendships, interesting speakers and enjoyable bus trips.

The guest speaker for March will be from RACQ care flight so this should be a very good meeting. Carindale National Seniors meets at Clem Jones Sports Centre, Stanley Road Carina, on the 2nd Tuesday of every month except January and bus trips are on the 4th Tuesday of every month except January and December. This month on March 9th there is a day trip to the Redland Bay area and Lunch at the Redlands Sports Club. There will be a visit to the Roma Street Gardens on the way home.

This will be any easy day so please support us— bring along your friends, we will make them most welcome. The Guest Speaker at our Meeting on Tuesday March 20th will be from Cota, who organise speakers on a range of informative topics particularly for senior groups. The subject will be ‘Medicines and You’. We have so many prescribed pills and potions, so knowing if/how they react a can be a concern It is a fact, that many instances requiring hospitalisation are caused by the mismanagement of prescription drugs. and their friends are reminded of the some of the other activities that are organised for ’ benefit.

There is an Indoor Bowls Group meeting every Thursday at 1.30 at the Ithaca Bowls Club. Contact is Rita (phone 31722166). Cards are always popular, so why not join the 500 Players at the Ashgrove Bowls Club.

WHEN painter Jack Pool retired in November 2000 at the age of 68, a new life emerged for this Stafford resident of 53 years.

“It wasn’t until I retired that I began volunteering” Mr. Pool said.

Mr Pool donated his last bag of blood at the Chermside Blood Donor Centre last month making a total of 30 donations and 90 lives saved.

“My wife was diagnosed with cancer six years ago, unfortunately she passed away three years ago.”

“During her treatment she received blood transfusions and seeing how many people required treatment made me wish I had started donating earlier.”

Australia needs over 27,000 donations every week and 34% of donated product goes to people with cancer and blood diseases.

Since 2000 Mr Pool has helped a number of community organisations, such as Meals on Wheels where he has been a volunteer for 14 years.

Mr Pool has also been the president of the Stafford branch for seven years now and dedicates 45 hours a week with the charity.

Mr Pool also organised the first driver for the St John’s Transport Access Project.

Although problems with physical health can be the reason that health takes you out of the workplace – it’s also true that those who get back to work after an illness improve their health.”

Hickie believes there’s something health preserving about work - probably a mix of factors, including new experiences that help drive the growth of brain cells, as well as interaction with other people.

you going to bed and getting up at the same time each day helps regulate our sleep wake cycles, and this is important for our physical and mental health,” he points out. “On the other hand, when people are not working they often tend to sleep more – and eat more.”

The really good news for anyone nudging retirement age is that, despite all the gloom about dementia, the brains of many modern 65 to 70 year olds are in pretty good shape compared to those of previous generations – and, says Hickie, often too young to be retired.

“Today’s physically active 70-year-olds who don’t smoke have scans showing brains that look 10 to 15 years younger than those of their parents’ generation at the same age – more of whom were smokers. We should never retire simply because of age – the best professors at this university are over 70 years of age,” he says, adding that the retirement age of 65 is out of date, an anachronism from the 19th century when life expectancy was shorter and people were often worn out by tougher working conditions.

“You find that around the world the age of retirement is going up,” says Hickie who, at the 2008 National Public Health Reform Summit, was quoted as saying that raising the retirement age from 65 to 72 would help reduce mental illness.

Still that doesn’t mean you have to keep doing the same job until you drop – most of us will have to change our job in some way – but just don’t quit altogether is his advice.

It’s a similar message from another brain expert, Dr Michael Valenzuela, Senior Research Fellow at the School of Psychiatry at the University of NSW. We’re trained to plan our retirement from a financial perspective, but we should also be paying just as much attention to planning our retirement from a healthy brain perspective, he writes in his latest book, Maintain your brain. (ABC Books).

“We need to replace the social, physical and cognitive activity that was an inherent part of our jobs – and which normally fills up 50 per cent of our waking lives – with new activities that also have a social, physical and cognitive component,” he says.

Continuing to work, even if only part time, can be one option, although his list of other activities that tick all three boxes includes getting involved in a community garden (as opposed to solitary gardening), dancing (it’s mentally demanding) and orienteering.

“I think many people will either decide to keep on working or to keep on learning,” says Valenzuela, pointing to the Tasmanian Healthy Brain Project, a world first study at the University of Tasmania to find out if taking up further education at an older age can buffer our brains against dementia.

Research already suggests that a tertiary education early in life seems to help protect against cognitive decline – could picking up textbooks in our 50s, 60s and 70s do the same?

to your new income? Will your money last you for the 20, or even 30, years you might need it to support you? Will you enjoy the new freedom and opportunities or do you worry about how you are going to fill your time?

You might be wondering how others have coped in a similar situation. To find out, we have talked to one retiree to get a view of the retirement experience from the other side.

By the time former mothercraft nurse Jane Bodnar retired last July, she had accumulated just $50,000 in superannuation after spending many years out of work raising her four children.

But unlike many of her friends in better financial positions, she says she had no fears about whether she would cope.

“I just thought, ‘I’ll manage, I’ll make this work for me,’” she says. “I’m not a scrooge but I have always been fairly thrifty.”

She now lives happily on the full age pension, supplemented by a small amount in allocated pension from her super and some assistance from her estranged husband.

Jane says she saw a financial adviser and didn’t hesitate over the decision to retire once she discovered she was able to qualify for the age pension at 64.

“I was getting very tired because nursing is shift work and I had just spent three years helping my mother before she died,” she says. “Like it or not, our energy levels start to deplete after a certain age and I, personally, don’t think it’s worth working yourself to a frazzle.”

She acknowledges that she’s better off than many age pensioners, not only because of the supplementary income she receives but also because she has been able to live in the family home and run a car she paid off before she finished work. “Without that, it would be very hard but I still think the way I operate, I would survive on it - my mother did,” she says.

Jane says her philosophy is to be satisfied with what she has. “Nursing is not well paid,’’ she says. ‘’As a mothercraft nurse, I was only earning about $24 an hour, so I have never had a lot of money

and we never had a lot of money growing up, so I’ve always been quite accepting of the fact that I would not be retiring on much.”

She says her life has been enriched by the absence of stress and the chance to spend more time with her children and grandchildren.

“I am very happy,” she says. “My children all live away from Sydney and I was getting frustrated at not being able to see them as much as I wanted to. I have also been blessed with some wonderful friends and that is just a lovely distraction. I certainly don’t sit at home twiddling my thumbs and getting out the knitting.”

So far, Jane has not had to make any sacrifices to stay within her means but that may come.

“I know I’m probably going to have to be frugal with food shopping and be mindful of things like the utilities bills and be more conscious that things aren’t being wasted,” she says. “But I still shout myself to the theatre and movies and I still go out for an inexpensive meal with friends.”

Where I have and have not been I HAVE been many places, but I’ve never been in cahoots. Apparently you can’t go alone, you have to be in cahoots with someone. I’ve also never been in cognito, I hear no one recognizes you there.

I have, however been in sane.

They don’t have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips, thanks to my family, friends and work. I would like to go to con-

clusions, but you have to jump and I’m not too much on physical activity anymore. I have never been in doubt, that is a sad place to go and I try not to visit there. I’ve been in flexible, but only when it

was very important to stand firm. Sometimes I’m in capable and I go there more often as I’m getting older. One of my favourite places to be is in suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and

pumps up the old heart.

At my age I need all the stimuli I can get. And more and more I think of the hereafter……several times a day in fact, I enter a room and think ‘what am I here after.’

Lend Lease Retirement residents get active with WiiFit LEND Lease Retirement Sunshine Coast residents are getting ready for the ultimate challenge later this month, to test their fitness levels by participating in a Nintendo WiiFit research study to be conducted by the University of the Sunshine Coast.

The study on the over 55’s age group will be conducted to determine the effectiveness of the WiiFit training program on reducing the risk of falls and fear of falling. The computer gaming console, Nintendo Wii is a combination of fitness and fun that uses body composition and movement to play a number of interactive games.

Vaughan Nicholson, an experienced physiotherapist and USC researcher who is conducting the study, said the residents will undertake 3 x 30 minute WiiFit sessions per week over a six week period. “Due to our ageing population it is very important that we identify effective and fun forms of physical activity and exercise that can help older adults age healthily. Previous research has already shown the effectiveness of Wii training in hospital and rehabilitation settings but this will be the first project of this scale to include healthy, independent older adults.

“We are also looking at a few specific

balance and strength measures that will potentially produce some exciting results. All the training will be performed standing on a Wii balance board participating in WiiFit games such as ‘ski slalom’ and ‘tight rope walking’. The residents will have to adjust their body position to navigate their way through the games.

“Weekly activity logbooks will be kept to record the duration of the WiiFit games, games played and details of any falls or near falls. During our sessions all participants will have their heart rate and blood pressure monitored and qualified first aid practitioners will be present.”

Chancellor Park Retirement Village Manager, Les Paton, said the study is a fantastic opportunity for all who are involved. “We have residents from here, Bellflower and Buderim Meadows retirement resorts wanting to take part.

“Safety of our residents is our number one priority. The results from this study will help determine whether the use of interactive fitness games will have a big future in preventing falls and rehabilitation. WHILE many people associate hyperbaric chambers with scuba diving, the same technology is promising new hope for patients with chronic wounds.

Small-scale studies have already shown positive results. Now a research project being run jointly between Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and the Wesley Research Institute is seeking participants so that a larger evidence base can guide the way forward for

medical practice in this area.

Principal investigator Dr Ken Thistlethwaite said hyperbaric oxygen treatment can help improve a body’s ability to heal itself by increasing the amount of oxygen delivered to the affected area.

“Low oxygen tension develops around a chronic wound, which makes it more difficult for the body to heal itself. In this treatment, we dissolve 17 times the usual amount of oxygen into the patient’s

blood plasma, so when it travels through the capillaries, a higher concentration gradient allows the oxygen to diffuse further into the tissues,” he said.

“It can improve a person’s ability to combat infections and decrease swelling in the area.”

Dr Thistlethwaite said that hyperbaric oxygen treatment had been used for treating wounds for quite a few years.

“While there is some evidence to support its use in diabetic foot infections,

there isn’t a lot of evidence to support its use in other areas, like venous wounds, which make up about 70 per cent of all wounds.”

The research team are looking for people with venous leg ulcers to participate in this study, whether the person has had the condition for six weeks, or many years.

QUT wound researcher and nurse practitioner Michelle Gibb said a venous leg ulcer is a wound located on the

lower leg and is associated with symptoms such as swelling.

“Participants in the study will receive gold standard treatments - dressings and bandages - free of charge, in the initial stage of the research,” she said.

“If participants’ wounds have not improved by at least 50 per cent within four weeks of gold standard treatments, they will then have the opportunity to undergo the hyperbaric oxygen treatment, also free of charge. Some

study shows a direct relationship between walking speed and mortality in the older male population, and concludes that those who walk faster than 0.82 metres per second are 1.23 times less likely to die than those with a slower step.

The Concord Health and Ageing in Men Project researchers who studied the walking speeds and mortality rates of more than 1,700 participants over a five-year period found that no men with walking speeds of 1.36 metres per second – or five kilometres per hour – or above died during the study.

Receiver operating characteristics curve analysis in healthy men aged 70 and over paper, five kilometres per hour is the walking speed that allows an older man to sidestep death – at least during the five-year investigation term – although only 22 of the 1700 participants actually achieved that rate.

“The Grim Reaper’s preferred walking speed is 0.82 metres per second

under working conditions,” the report said.

“As none of the men in the study with walking speeds of 1.36 metres per second or greater had contact with death, this seems to be the Grim Reaper’s most likely maximum speed; for those wishing to avoid their allotted fate, this would be

the advised walking speed.”

Stem cell hope for leading cause of blindness.

A WORLD first experiment using human embryonic stem cells has shown a measurable improvement in the sight of two women with macular degeneration.

The findings come from a preliminary report published recently in the prestigious British medical journal, The Lancet, concerning a study by researchers from the Uni-

versity of California (UCLA) and biotechnology company, Advanced Cell Technology (ACT), which also funded the work. In the study, researchers sought to establish the safety and tolerability of transplanting human embryonic stem cells (hESC) into the eyes of patients with two forms of macular degeneration.

The two patients were

women who were ‘legally blind’ at the time of injection of the human embryonic stem cells. One woman in her 50s has Stargardt’s macular dystrophy while the other, in her 70s, has dry age-related macular degeneration – the leading cause of blindness in the developed world.

Reporting the findings, the authors say, “struc-

tural evidence confirmed cells had attached and continued to persist during our study”.

Both women showed positive results – increasing their ability to identify letters on a sight test chart with no signs of rejection or any abnormal signs during the first four months.

They believe the future goal will be to treat patients earlier in the disease process, potentially increasing the likelihood of visual improvement.

The study has attracted wide media interest around the world, partly because of the hope it offers to the hundreds of thousands of people around the world who have macular degeneration, but also because, while human embryonic stem cells were first discovered 13 years ago, this is the first time that they have been transplanted into human patients for any purpose.

In a press release from Advanced Cell Technology, co-author and chief scientific officer of ACT, Dr Robert Lanza, said if the treatment was proven to be safe and effective in more patients over time, the stem cells could be used early in the disease process to improve the prospects of people re-

taining their sight.

“Stem cells offer the possibility of providing new treatment strategies for currently incurable retinal degenerative diseases.

Although these initial studies are designed to determine the safety and tolerability, we eventually hope to treat patients earlier in the course of the

disease; further increasing the likelihood the new cells will rescue photoreceptors and prevent visual loss.

As the train speeds through the wheat growing areas on the Southern Downs,

a delicious lunch is served to passenger’s seats and short wine tasting sessions are held in the club car just to get you in the mood before the train arrives at its destination.

Local Granite Belt wines are presented for tasting sessions (whites are usually the flavour of the day on the forward journey) in the club car. On arrival at Stanthorpe coaches will take passengers to a selection of wineries, then to a special dinner at the Queensland College of Wine Tourism.

To sign up and become a Green Nomad you can fill in the online application form. In the members only section of the website you can keep in touch with fellow Green Nomads via private messaging, share conversations and pictures on the community’s forum and

THE 31 January 2012 was a historic day for the developing Mt Gravatt Men’s Shed. State Member for Mansfield Phil Reeves and President of the Mt Gravatt Men’s Shed symbolically turned the first sod on the site of the proposed new men’s shed to be built on land at the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds.

The Mt Gravatt Men’s Shed project has developed from an initial meeting held on the 19 August 2009 with the view of considering whether the Mt Gravatt community could benefit from a local men’s shed. Further discussions took place and on the 4 November 2009, a steering committee consisting of seven men was formed to develop a shed in the area. On the 17 May 2010 a public meeting was held at which over 100 interested people attended.

More than 60 men became financial members on that day.

The official sod turning event was attended by over 150 invited guests, men shed members and their partners and involved a brief information session on the development of the shed which was held in the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds Community Hall. Bruce Turnbull, Secretary of the Qld Men’s Shed Association represented that body. Then those in attendance were invited to

walk to the proposed site of the new shed nearby to witness the sod turning. The group then returned to the hall for further formalities and morning tea.

Cheryl Scorey presented an Australian Flag on behalf of the Ross Vasta the Federal Member for Bonner. Phil Reeves, State Member for Mansfield indicated that he would present a Queensland Flag to the organisation.

The Vision of the Mt Gravatt Men’s shed is ‘to provide a facility where men of all ages can feel comfortable and gather together to spend time socially, as well as in a practical manner, by participating in constructive endeavours that develop self-esteem.’

President Brian Wheeler thanked local businesses, Federal, State and local council members for their backing as well as service clubs, Rotary and Lions for their support including funding. Also the Brisbane City Council staff and Wishart Ward office for assistance with town planning and building permit processing.

Those in attendance were advised of a number of Australia Day awards presented to Mt Gravatt Men’s Shed members.

These included Brian Wheeler with an Australia Day Citizenship Award; Elwyn Jackson and his wife Dell an Aus-

tralia Day Seniors Award and the Mt Gravatt Men’s Shed for a Community Award.

The Mt Gravatt Men’s Shed now has 136 financial members and still growing every month.

With the help of the $200,000 Queensland grant provided through the office of Phil Reeves, building of the new shed will commence shortly.

Once started, it is anticipated that it would be completed to a lock-up stage in about 3-4 months. The internal fitout would then need to be undertaken.

Brian Wheeler in his speech thanked those in attendance including Cr Krista Adams who is also the Chair of the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds Trust who made the establishment of the shed possible including the availability of the land where the shed will be constructed.

Until the new shed is completed, weekly activities are being conducted in a temporary shed nearby a few mornings a week thanks to the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds.

National Servicemen’s Association of Australia (Qld Branch) Inc.

The National Servicemen’s Association of Australia was formed in Toowoomba in 1987 and later this year will celebrate its silver anniversary. With branches now extended throughout the Commonwealth, more than thirty are in Queensland, with two operating in the northern suburbs. THE Queensland Music Festival Board confirmed today the appointment of internationally renowned jazz musician James Morrison as Artistic Director of the 2013 and 2015 Festivals.

QMF Chair Kate Farrar said the Board is ecstatic at his appointment.

“Not only is James an

international star performer, he is also an inspiring and highly experienced music educator who will champion the community development aspects so important to the Festival,” Ms Farrar said.

James Morrison describes his appointment as an extremely exciting new chapter in

his life.

“Having spent many years performing all over Queensland, I have an appreciation for the breadth of music this State has to offer,” Mr Morrison said.

“I’m very much looking forward to working with the QMF team to continue and expand the spectacular work for which this Festival is renowned.”

CHEF, Don Scott Senior, and Barista, Don Junior (‘DJ’), have made a much anticipated return to the Caboolture Country Markets. Having served the markets for many years, the family business took a well-earned break but after a four year hiatus could not resist coming back through popular demand.

With their combined credentials, Don (Senior) is a Qualified Chef, having worked in four countries and taught in Tafe for 23 years and ‘DJ’ is a fully trained barista, the pair said they have experienced the return of 75 percent or more of their old clientele.

With their brand new state-of-the-art food van,

decked out with two coffee machines, two display cabinets, and five fridges, it’s easy to see why gourmet is the flavour of the business.

THE Redcliffe Historical Society Inc was formed at a public meeting on the 23rd of February, 1967 for the purpose of preserving and documenting the history of Redcliffe and the surrounding areas. Mr James Houghton was elected the first Foundation President.

Since then, The Society has grown and thrived as a vibrant community group, which is involved in education in schools and with the general public, and in preserving our history for the future generations. We publish a fascinating newsletter bi-monthly, hold a variety of social functions, and provide great support to the Redcliffe Museum which was originally created by the early Society members, 10 years ago.

We always have several projects “on the go” at any given time, and members are encouraged to join in and help to make them successful.

The society holds meetings each month at the Redcliffe Library rooms. Anyone who is interested in history, and in particular the history of our region, is very welcome. Meetings begin at 2pm on the 2nd Friday of each month, and an interesting speaker is always a highlight of the day. Afternoon tea is provided afterwards, and visitors and new members are particularly welcome.

February 10th was our first meeting for the year, and we were entertained by Karen Tyler, co-ordinator of the Redcliffe Art Gallery. Her talk and Power Point presentation, on the “Ceramics of the Moreton Bay Art Collection” was enthusiastically received by the members.

On Friday March 9th, our members will be very interested to hear a talk by Roy King from the Redcliffe Coast Guard. Roy was one of the founding members of the Coast Guard in 1973. He heard that a group was being formed, and that they needed 10 boats to be registered. Roy’s fishing boat became number 10, and so the Redcliffe Coast Guard was formed.

Roy has remained a very active member of the Coast Guard for almost 40 years, and no doubt he will give an enthralling talk about his time with them. Our members are looking forward very much, to his talk. Enquiries contact Margaret on 3284 0028.

Group T.L.C. (Train, Learn and Connect) entertained members at a recent event.

Our 1st meeting for 2012 was held on Tuesday, 14 February, being Valentines Day. What better entertainment could we have had than T.L.C. (Train, Learn and Connect)? These young ladies gave us a lovely morning of a Love Boat theme with lots of games, surprises, goodie bags and gifts. Many thanks again, girls!

We have six visitors for our meeting, two from a nearby Retirement Village and four from the Calamvale Branch of National Seniors Assoc. It is great to share ideas with other branch members.

There were up to 60 members, aged in their early twenties to probably late forties/very early fifties.

Fifty years later, age and ill-health have taken their toll. We are all retirees and there are about 12 of us.

We perform the same kind of music, usually in two acts, with a duration of 75 or 90 minutes.

Recognising that many of our audience members have cognitive impairment, we wear bright costumes and some movements rather than standing still, to maintain their attention. Almost all of our shows are in the daytime. The original name now seemed too grandiose (we also encountered opposition to the prospect of “opera singers” being invited to entertain) so we shortened the name to the initials MLOC, adding the word ‘Singers’.

We are based on Brisbane’s north side and urgently need singers, especially soprano voices (at present lots of altos).

Entertaining at nursing homes, hostels, seniors’ groups and retirement complexes, we sing the old songs and songs from the musicals, in costume and with basic movement. Car pooling to venues and some petrol subsidy at end of each year.

(VOICE, Interests and Education of Women) Come and join us in 2012 The next meeting of the Newmarket VIEW Club will be at the Gaythorne R.S.L. on Tuesday, March 27th, 10.30 for 11.00 a.m. Cost of two course lunch is $25 with coffee and tea included.

Our guest speaker on the day will be Sarah Osman, Development Manager from A.C.T. for Kids (formerly Abused Child Trust) who will speak on the services and therapy provided to help turn around the lives of abused and neglected children.

We are a small, friendly Club and in addition to our meetings we have monthly social outings – coffee mornings, movie days and through the Learning for Life program which assists disadvantaged Australian children with their schooling.
