Orange Grove Quilters stitch up another milestone

Berry Cosgrove, Dot Meyer, Maria Appoloni, Lorna Kelly, Bronwyn Cowan, Marie Cooper. Absent: Kay McMahon, Nell Erbacher, Gay Smith, Gwen Colless and Clare Ellis.

A small band of disparate women meets every fortnight on the Southside of Brisbane. Their mission is simple: to lovingly create Linus quilts for distribution to sick and needy children. And while they’re busy stitching their colourful works of art, the women fill the afternoons with laughter and companionship.

The group joined Project Linus in 2005. Since then, they have sewn two thousand quilts and celebrated the latest milestone. Says member Maria Appolini: ‘My son Robert took us out for a celebratory lunch after we finished the one thousandth quilt and he’s done it again. I bet he never thought it’d happen.’ Continued on Page 2

Continued from Page 1 The group largely depends on donations of materials to create the quilts and it’s amazing what can be created from the bright bits and pieces that come their way. Ruby Houston, convenor of Project Linus Qld supplies the batting and some materials and then collects the quilts for distribution. In 2012, the group created a quilt of Australian flora and fauna which member, Berry Cosgrove presented to the Royal Flying Doctor Service on the opening of their display at the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame in Longreach. Each quilt block was sewn by the women and put together by member Lorna Kelly to create the finished piece. The group have backed it up with a country theme for 2013, much to the delight of the RFDS. The quilt

will be raffled to raise greatly needed funds. The generosity of the women didn’t stop with the raffle quilt. They quickly turned their attention to the plight of children affected by the recent floods. With the cooler weather coming, the children would need to keep warm. So they packed up twenty-two Linus quilts for distribution to flood-affected areas like Jundah in Central West Queensland. With eleven members aged between sixty and eightyfive years young, the quality and quantity of their output is phenomenal. Says Berry: ‘When our host, Dorothy Meyers sold her house and moved into a retirement village not long ago, we simply packed up our equipment and relocated to their community room. You can’t keep good quilters down. We’ve got work to do!’

Get outside and grow for National Tree Day NATIONAL Tree Day is Australia’s biggest community tree planting and nature-care event, and Planet Ark is encouraging all people to get outside and grow on Sunday 28th July. “Our population is spending more and more time indoors, disconnected from the natural world,” says National Tree Day Manager Debbie Agnew. “National Tree Day is a callto-action for all Australians to Get Outside and Grow.” “Research studies, from Australia and overseas, show there are significant personal benefits associated with spending time in nature and

that contact with nature helps people grow and thrive,” she says. “Hospital patients heal quicker when exposed to nature. Children learn better when they can see trees from the classroom and green time fosters intellectual development, imagination, a love of nature and healthier growth. Adults de-stress and relax when spending time in tranquil green settings.” “Personal sites can take place in your backyard or apartment block and along your nature strip or street (in accordance with council guidelines),” says Agnew. “It’s a great opportunity

Old age & declining health no barrier to happy social life AUSTRALIANS in their 70s and 80s enjoy better social relationships and report higher satisfaction with their lives compared to people in their 50s, according to a study released recently. Despite being in poorer health and more likely to be living alone, people aged over 70 said they were less likely to feel socially isolated and, instead, had more companionship than their younger cohorts. The findings were released in the National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre report Staying Connected: Social Engagement and Wellbeing Among Mature Age Australians. National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said the results were surprising. “This older cohort is more likely to report that they socialise as much as they want to and they have all the friends they want or need, so overall the quality

of their social relationships is higher than for younger people,” he said. “Compared to those in their 50s and 60s, they also reported higher levels of being comfortable with their living standards and felt free to make decisions about how they live their lives.” But the study raised some worrying concerns about the wellbeing of people aged in their 50s, O’Neill said. “People in their 50s are not doing as well. They are more likely to feel isolated from others and more likely to feel a lack of companionship,” O’Neill said. “Possible reasons for this include potential stressors of workforce participation or unemployment, sharing their household with children and the hours involved in caring for their elderly parents.” The researchers surveyed 2,123 members of National Seniors Australia aged between 50 and 89 years. Media release: National Seniors

SENIORS NEWS Building on track at Carramar

A NEW 32-bed, $8 million dementiaspecific wing currently under construction at NoosaCare Inc’s Carramar aged care facility is expected to be open by July this year. The building has been designed to incorporate the latest developments in aged care gathered from around the world, aimed at providing a supportive environment for people living with dementia and giving them a chance to do some living. The single level building reflects the Noosa lifestyle and the grounds are designed in response to our love of the outdoors. Each of the larger than average single rooms has a private ensuite and an outlook onto magnificent gardens where landscaping obscures the security. Themed garden room s are a special feature: residents can wander freely in “The Rural Sector”, “The Rainforest”, “The River” and “The Beach”, and be able to experience the smell and feel of the grass, feel the sun on their skin, watch the birds in the trees and listen

to the sound of water rippling over pebbles. Security has been addressed with a state-of-the-art fire alarm and detection system. Specially selected staff who have received extensive education in dementia care will participate in the day to day life of residents by living alongside them and sharing meals with them. Staff and residents will be able to cook meals together in a fully functional kitchen, residents can enjoy a massage or aromatherapy in the private wellness room, and an overnight private room has been set aside where relatives can stay during the first few days of a resident’s admission. NoosaCare is a community-owned, notfor-profit organisation incorporating Carramar in Tewantin and Kabara in Cooroy. For nearly three decades NoosaCare has provided specialist care to residents. tion about the disposal of old computers, televisions and parts that they have accumulated. The legal disposal of electronic waste for a long time has been inconvenient and in most cases non-existent. Disposal often used to incur a fee. This resulted in the unlawful dumping of such items. This has now changed. The National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme has been set up by the Federal Government to provide a service to dispose of and recycle various items of e-waste totally free to households. Dropzone is a scheme that allows for televisions, personal computers, laptops, computer monitors, computer parts and peripherals to be taken to certain locations for recycling and at no cost. The Waste Transfer Stations at Chandler, Nudgee, Willawong and Ferny Grove are some of the drop off facilities where these items can be disposed of for free. There are many additional drop-off points throughout Brisbane and Queensland all of which can be found through the Dropzone website www.dropzone.org.au. Certain conditions apply on volume restrictions as well as what is accepted at non-waste transfer stations. In the case of computers, it is the responsibility of the person disposing of the material to remove or delete any personal data from hard drives before being taken to a Dropzone recycling point. Printer cartridges can be disposed of through Planetark. Drop off locations for these can be lo-

cated through their website http:// cartridges.planetark.org/ involvement/. If you reside in Brisbane, you can contact the Brisbane City Council call centre on 3403 8888 for more information about the scheme. The Dropzone website is www.dropzone.org.au.

SENIORS NEWS Miss O’Shea’s School

AUCHENFLOWER Infants School was better known by the unofficial title of Miss O’Shea’s School. It was a timber building in Munro St, with a big tree surrounded by bench seats in the middle of the playground, which was of course unsealed. Inside were long desks and forms for the 28 or so pupils. The teachers were Miss Bridie O’Shea, a small woman generally

dressed in black, assisted by Miss Jeffries. I attended in 1936 when I was six years old, along with my best friend and next-door neighbour Rita and my brother Tom who was 20 months younger but from memory our curriculum was the same. Our first lessons were on slates with slate pencils. My favourite slate pencil had a blue and white checked

wrapper and we had sponges to erase the writing. We learnt to read from books with pictures of boys and girls dressed in 18th century Englishstyle clothing and playing with hoops. I thought them strange, being used to running around half-naked in the Queensland outdoors and swimming. But then, wonder of wonders, suddenly copybooks appeared which were meant to

THE fast approaching Lifeline Caboolture Bookfest at the Caboolture Centenary Lakes Indoor Basketball Courts on Morayfield Road, from Saturday April 6 to Monday April 8, will not disappoint the avid book lover. Doors open 8:30am until 4:30pm each day to around 40 tonnes of fiction, faction, text books, novels, magazines, short stories, novellas and heaps of sought after titles with great bargains to be had over the three days. The Bookfest is a must-visit event for those looking for activities to do with the children over the school holidays as it provides a day or two out of the house, it is not weather dependent and the kids (and adults) will have something to do for the rest of the holidays; rain, hail or shine. Last year, across the two events in April and September, the Lifeline Caboolture Bookfest raised a total of just over $60,000 to support integral fundraising initiative to help support Lifeline and UnitingCare

Community’s free counselling and support services. UnitingCare Community holds a total of 11 Lifeline Bookfest events across Queensland each year and they are an integral fundraiser for the disability, crisis support and child and family services. The event will see around 130 tables stocked to the brim with over 40 tonnes of hardcovers and paperbacks of all genres, styles and authors for sale from as little as $2 each. “We have seen so many popular books in the donations this year, there will be a lot of different genres, subjects and both modern and classic books to choose from,” said Ian Ezzy, Lifeline Business Division Manager. “Not only do we sell books at the event but we also sell a large range of puzzles, games and vinyl records,” said Ian. “Budding deejays come to the event to scour through the records as we only stock those that are in excellent condition and also have some that can’t easily be found elsewhere.” Ian said. For those with book shelves already bursting at the seams, donating to the Lifeline Bookfest is a fantastic way to recycle books that are no longer needed and to make way for some new and exciting chapters. All the funds raised at the Bookfest help support Lifeline and UnitingCare Community’s free counselling and support services including the Lifeline Community Recovery program that send counsellors out into disaster affected areas to support the wellbeing of those affected.

Lifeline Marks 50 Years of Suicide Prevention Services ON 16 March 2013 Lifeline celebrated 50 years of suicide prevention services in the Australian community. The idea of a crisis line, later to be called Lifeline, originated on a Sunday night in early 1960 after Rev Dr Sir Alan Walker, then Superintendent of Wesley Mission, took a phone call from a distressed young man. “This is Roy speaking,” said a quiet voice on the other end of the line. “You don’t know me, but can I speak with you a few moments, I have just written you a letter, which you will receive on Monday morning. By that time I will be dead. I’m sorry to worry you but there is really nobody who cares what happens to me.” The loneliness and desperation of this suicidal man, later found dead by Darlinghurst police, along with many similar experiences, prompted Sir Alan to take action to prevent suicide. Determined not to let isolation and a lack of support be the cause of more deaths, Sir Alan began planning a 24hour crisis support line, which would operate from Wesley Mission in Sydney’s CBD. At 5pm on the 16th of March, 1963, the first call was taken from a distressed young woman on Lifeline’s crisis line, a service born out of the social change that had embraced Australia in the 1960s. In its first week of operation Lifeline received 350 phone calls on its crisis support line which swelled to more than 15,000 calls in its first year. Lifeline has continued to grow over the ensuing 50 years and now operates from 41 Centres throughout every state and

territory in Australia. The demands on Lifeline’s 13 11 14 crisis line, and other services, continue to climb. “Last year Lifeline answered 541,000 calls which is the highest number in its history and we expect this number to grow in 2013 and beyond,” John Brogden, Lifeline Chairman, said. “Lifeline’s endurance is due to the wonderful contribution of volunteers and staff, past and present, who have positively impacted on the lives of 100s of thousands of Australians over the last 50 years.” “In 2012 Lifeline launched Crisis Support Chat, an online equivalent of 13 11 14, to reach out to even more Australians in a medium comfortable to them.” “As Lifeline continues to innovate and service more help seekers than ever before, I remind everyone that our existence is entirely possible due to the generosity of Australians, governments and our corporate friends and I use this occasion to ask everyone to dig deeper as we strive towards our vision of ‘an Australia free of suicide’.” Today, Lifeline services are provided by 12,000 volunteers and staff nationally; however Lifeline wouldn’t exist without the original vision of the Wesley Mission back in the early 1960s. Under the visionary leadership of the Rev Dr Sir Alan Walker, Wesley Mission responded to a growing social need and established Lifeline. It continues that commitment today through Lifeline Sydney and Sutherland.

Naval Centenary Memorial

How often do you use a radio? Do you realise that every time you use a mobile, or a remote to turn on your TV, or a GPS you are relying on radio communications? Imagine living in a world without radio communication? This is the challenge that faced everyone at sea until the turn of the 20th Century. Marconi’s ex-

periments in the late 1890’s were taken up by the Royal Navy in the UK and in turn the Queensland Marine Defence Force became the first Australian Navy to trial wireless telegraphy between ships and from ship-to-shore. Trials began on 9th April 1903 culminating in the first Australian Naval message

from HMQS GAYUNDAH off Moreton Island to a receiving station in the gardens of St Mary’s Anglican Church, Kangaroo Point.Radio revolutionised contemporary Naval warfare and this first for Queensland soon spread to Merchant shipping and safety of life at sea, let alone our daily life. The

110th Anniversary of that first signal has been chosen for the Dedication of a Memorial to all who have served in the Navy, especially those who paid the supreme sacrifice. This Memorial is being built on the site of that receiving station. Another milestone in the long relationship between the ‘Naval Church’ in Brisbane and the Navy, started when the Qld Marine Naval Base began operations in what is now the Naval Stores Depot, on the River under the cliffs on which St Mary’s stands. The Dedication starts at 10.15 on Tuesday 9th and will be performed by HE the Governor of Queensland assisted by His Grace the Archbishop and Anglican Primate of Australia. We welcome anyone interested in the Navy or who has served or is related to a sailor to come along – there will be a March along River Terrace before the Dedication and already we anticipate up to 500 participants. IPSWICH City Council is once again gearing up to host the Community Fun Day at Limestone Park this 25th May, 9am t0 3pm. Arts, Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale said that the day has been a popular event for local families for the last six years. “Planning is already underway to make this a huge day with games and rides for the kids and music and entertainment for the whole family. “There is also a serious side to this event. “Many of our important community organisations and emergency ser-

Foundation calls on Government to rethink NDIS

THE Macular Disease Foundation Australia (MDFA) is calling on the Federal Government to rethink how older Australians will be cared for given the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) excludes people who acquire a disability at the age of 65 and over. MDFA CEO, Julie Heraghty said, “If you acquire a disability, such as legal blindness from macular degeneration (MD) after the age of 65 years, you are presently excluded from the support of the NDIS and expected to be catered for in the aged care system. Aged care is not powered to care for those with a disability of blindness or serious vision loss, even under the present aged care reform.” For the estimated 167,000 people who have late agerelated MD and experience serious vision impairment or blindness, virtually all are aged over 65i and therefore will be excluded from the NDIS. “The Government needs to extend the NDIS to include people aged 65 years and over or find another solution very quickly before the NDIS and aged care reform travels so far that over 65 year olds are locked

out,” said Heraghty. “Letting people fall through the cracks of two Government reform agendas based on an arbitrary pension age cut off is just unfair and unjust. There is no interface and no mechanism between disability and aged care reform for rehabilitation, training and equipment for those diagnosed after 65,” said Heraghty. What is alarming is that Australians are unaware of the over 65 year old exclusion. A national survey conducted by the MDFA reveals that only 3% of all Australians know that the National Disability Insurance Scheme exclusion starts at age 65 years. “The Government has an obligation to accommodate older Australians who go blind. The older you get, the harder it gets, and we can’t let this group suffer in silence,” said Heraghty. The MDF have presented their concerns to a Senate Committee Enquiry in Canberra. For further information on macular disease phone the free call number 1800 111 709 or visit www.mdfoundation.com.au.

SENIORS NEWS An Australian Pilgrimage Anzac Coo-ee Won’t You come?

We won’t forget you cobber

ANZAC Day 25th April goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day we remember all Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. The spirit of ANZAC, with its human qualities of courage, mateship and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity. On ANZAC Day, ceremonies are held in towns and cities across the nation to acknowledge the service of our veterans. Join the RSL in commemorating 2013 ANZAC Day by attending one of the many services held across Brisbane.

Page 14 - Brisbane Seniors - April 2013

A CALL from the Dardanelles saw, in 1915, thousands of young Australian men pledge their lives toward a campaign destined to fail. A trip to Gelibolu, the Gallipoli Peninsula, Anzac Cove isn’t for the feinthearted. In freezing cold, to commemorate our fallen troops (and survivors) add Lone Pine Service visit, over to Chunuk Bair Cemetery to even more resting sites... ANZACS. A very emotional challenging experience includes visitors,

young and old there to acknowledge, take home memories of their war heroes with utmost respect and admiration. Endless inscriptions confront you: “My boy”, “You never came home”, “Why you?”, a piece of stucco from the family home leaning against one grave. We carry these tens of thousands in our hearts forever, ‘Lest We Forget’. On this barren land you can sense the heartache that once dominated the landscape, breaking the now-silent air. The vic-

tors and vanquished, fighting long and hard, suffered massive causalities. Our historians say, add, down the years, Borneo, Sandakan, Ranou and death marches, POW camps where 1800 Australians perished - six surviving. Australian, English, Borneo, Contemplation Gardens pay tribute, also to locals who rendered assistance to the afore-mentioned. Our men at the Western Front, Villers Bretonneux and every place else our brave soldiers served through

Europe, Africa, Middle East, the Pacific etc. We ponder, give thanks and hope, we as a nation feel

worth such bravery, loss of life in the thousands.... gone from us forever... R.I.P.

First verse of an Anzac Day hymn: A valiant hearts, who to your glory came Through dust of conflict and through battle flame Tranquil you lie, your knightly virtue proud Your memory hallowed in the land you loved. Submitted by Thea Booth

Marching to the drums By Lenore Robinson

River Glen Haven

www.riverglenhaven.com.au

AS ANZAC day approaches, many people young and old, in cities and country towns will attend marches across the Nation. Men and women of past conflicts will proudly march, some displaying distinguished medals, sad reminders of the hopelessness of war. The old ‘diggers’ will be applauded and the onlookers will remember the meaning of ANZAC Day and the significance of lives senselessly lost, not only in the Great War but in all subsequent conflicts. The first beat of the drums will bring a hush and every eye will be fixed and watchful, as a sound like no other on this momentous day breaks the silence. The sound of heavy boots, creaking, crunching loudly on the asphalt. It’s the Army, boys and girls in khaki, heads erect, shoulders back, passing magnificently to thunderous applause. The sound of their marching slowly fades and for a moment all will be silent. Then following close upon their heels will be another band, the drummer beating time on the bass drum, one – two – three – four. A Scottish Band this, bagpipes and all rendering the wellknown tempo, ‘Scotland the Brave.’ The parade will continue with every marcher stepping in time to the beat of the drums, the drums of war, which have called men to battle since the dawning of time. And one must wonder, will the young of today’s Defence Forces be here in coming decades to march as old men, with memories of horror and revulsion, or will they sleep in foreign lands, forever remembered with graves unmarked, thus adding to the ranks of unknown soldiers? Memories return to me of the ANZAC day six years past, when I saw him, that boy in blue, tall and straight, a rifle at his shoulder, marching with his squadron of Air Cadets, all in step, eyes front, serious, devoted – their moment on this historic day. And as the crowd cheered and clapped and flags waved, the boys and girls of 202 Squadron were undaunted, did not falter, missed not a step. Start from $139,500 I gazed upon him, this boy, our grandson, to $320,000 snapped a photograph or two and followed the parade to the memorial, where I watched the service, for I had to see him, wonder at him, at his achievement. And I prayed for him, for he, like each of his fellows, will forever be a special child, a child to be cherished. I shed a tear that day for these young ones, knowing that I may not be here to weep for them if they should go to war. For I too, must heed the sound of a distant drum.

SENIORS NEWS A century of care and concern

The magnitude of the task facing First World War medical personnel is evident in this image of wounded men on the Menin Road in September, 1917. Shortly after the photograph was taken a German shell killed many of those on stretchers. More than 5000 Australian were killed or wounded in the Battle of the Menin Road.

WHEN Australians look back over more than a century of wars and conflicts, some famous names come to mind. Among the most highly esteemed are those who have dedicated themselves to saving, rather than taking lives. Australia’s first Victoria Cross, awarded during the Boer War in South Africa, went to Lieutenant Neville Howse of the New South Wales Army Medical Corps, for his daring rescue of a wounded man under heavy fire. Howse went on to a distinguished career in the military medicine and remains one of Australia’s most respected wartime figures. But far more well known to present day Australians is a man who served under Howse on Gallipoli during the First World War. Private John Simpson of the 3rd Field Ambulance was killed after just three weeks of frontline service at the beginning

of the Gallipoli campaign. Yet of the more than 300,000 Australians to have served overseas between 1914 and 1918, none have remained as prominent in the public memory is Simpson, better known as ‘the man with the donkey’. A generation later, in another world war, Australians fought in a series of battles at places such Tobruk, El Alamein and Kokoda, that have gone down in legend. It was, however, from our country’s most bitter defeats, at the hands of the Japanese, that Australia’s preeminent figures of the Second World War emerged. Sister Vivian Bullwinkel and Lieutenant Colonel Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop, both survivors of the deprivations and brutality of Japanese captivity, have come to stand for the selfless endurance displayed by medical personnel in prison camps throughout Japanese occupied

Regular visits to Brisbane

territory. When Australia went to war in Korea, service nurses earned the respect of troops and airmen alike for their work on evacuation flights from the battle zone to the safety of hospital in Japan. At Rwanda, where Australian peacekeepers witnessed scenes of violence unimaginable to all but hardened frontline infantry, Captain Carol Vaughan Evans braved gunfire to treat the victims of a massacre. She is one of many Australian peacekeepers who have served in war torn countries the world over, protected by the Red Cross on their sleeve and trusted by those whom they help because of the status that this symbol carries. Whenever Australians have gone to war they have relied on the dedication of medical personnel, from the stretcher bearers who share all the risks of the front line to the nurses and surgeons whose skill and care, sometimes under fire, have saved the lives of many who might otherwise have died. Australian medical personnel have earned an honoured place in Australian military history. Those serving today in Afghanistan and on peacekeeping operations continue to uphold proud traditions established in South Africa, Gallipoli, the Western Front, Asia, Africa and wherever Australian service men and women have served through more than a century of war and conflict. Queens Parks’ Anniversary to be celebrated by Council

THE anniversary of Queensland’s oldest park will be celebrated by Ipswich City in July. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said council planned to mark 150 years since the establishment of the ever popular Queens Park on July 14, 1863. “Originally covering 11 hectares of prime land located on high ground on the fringes of Ipswich town, Queens Park, named in honour of Queen Victoria, was defined, declared, fenced and gated by the then Ipswich Town Council in July 1863,” Cr Pisasale said. “In the years since the park has undergone many changes and has become one of the most well recognised and popular venues frequented by families living in South-East Queensland. “Queens Park is now home to schools, community facilities, sporting clubs and fields, federal, state and local government facilities and two separate recreation spaces - Queens Park and Limestone Park. Council holds the Milford St site in trust for the

Queensland Government and it is registered on the Queensland State Heritage Places Register. The present day Queens Park was gazetted in 1982 and contains more than 22.97 ha occupying three land parcels. Cr Pisasale said Queens Park was one of the city’s premier parks and each week attracted thousands of visitors. “It is not just a much-loved part of Ipswich, it is also an important part of Queensland. “Queens Park was the first park to be developed in Queensland, first being surveyed in 1842. “Its original architectural design dates back to 1862 and it is perhaps Ipswich’s most well-known landmark. “These days visitors to the park can experience old world charm with modern day conveniences.” Features of the park include extensive formalised garden beds, the Japanese-style Nerima Gardens), the Ipswich Nature Centre, children’s play facilities, the Bush House, the Bush Chapel, several sporting clubs, a cafe and the Environmental Education Centre.

Their current workshop at the PCYC is in a shipping container donated by Linfox – a tight squeeze now that the group’s size has swelled to thirty or more,” he said. “Once the William Street renovations are complete, the men will be able to come together in their own space, in their own time, to share knowledge, experience and friendship within this group. “The Alexandra Hills Men’s Shed has a very big restoration job ahead, but this task itself is consistent with the ideals and aspirations of the program. “I intend to be a regular visitor once restoration is complete and the group has moved into their new home.”

The group, which has been meeting at the Redlands Police-Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) in Capalaba for more than a year, will renovate the disused William Street hall to comply with building code standards - breathing new life into an existing community venue. Fresh Open Gardens Australia April Pattison Rare Plant Garden, 13 & 14 April 2013

GLENDALE GRANNY CABINS • Independence • Security • Peace of Mind

Recently placed on Brisbane City Council’s Heritage List, this fascinating outersuburban garden boasts Australia’s largest collection of variegated plants and native ferns. Passionate plantsman, Rod Pattison, bought the property in 1982 with the idea of building a large shade-house to allow him to grow ferns. Just over twenty years later, and that ‘shadehouse’ has become an amazing and selfsustaining rainforest ecosystem! Under the stunning canopy of trees, the garden is shaded, cool and moist – ideal for growing a range of rainforest plants. There are at least 400 different types of ferns, which Rod has discovered

over the past twentyfive years in New South Wales and Queensland. In the spirit of the legacy that his garden has created, Rod freely donates plants and spores to the nursery industry in the hope that these beautiful and rare plants will become more

readily available to home gardeners. The garden is not formal or planned – it’s a true collector’s garden containing vivid foliage plants, staghorns, elkhorns, calatheas, brugmansias, bromeliads and orchids. A plant lover’s heaven.

Lucky visitors will be able to purchase rare and unusual plants from Rod’s collection. The garden address is 447 Miles Platting Road, Rochedale. Open days are 13th and 14th April, 2013 10am to 4.30pm, admission is $7 (under 18 free).

Wisdom from Seniors I READ an article that said the typical symptoms of stress are: eating too much, impulse buying, and driving too fast. Are they kidding? That is my idea of a perfect day! I know what Victoria’s Secret is. The secret is that nobody older than 30 can fit into their stuff. April 2013 - Brisbane Seniors - Page 23

BRISBANE NSA New Farm

NEW research indicates that people aged 70 and over are happier than those in their 50s and 60s despite being more likely to live alone and have poorer health. The findings were released early in March in the latest National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre report Staying Connected: Social Engagement and Wellbeing Among Mature Age Australians. The report was based on a survey of members both online and by mail resulting in a sample size of 2,123. Chief executive Michael O’Neill said the results were surprising: “This older cohort is more likely to report socialising as much as they want with all the friends they want or need, so overall the quality of their social relationships is higher than for younger people.” Interestingly, while the telephone was the preferred way of keeping in touch with friends and family, Skype was used by over 20% of the 70 plus age group. This percentage rose to 40% for those in their 60’s, dropping slightly for the 50 something age group. Friends of the Postal system will be happy that snail mail also rated highly, particularly among the over 70’s. But the study raised some worrying concerns about the wellbeing of people aged in their 50s who were

more likely to feel isolated and lack companionship. Possible reasons for this include job stress or unemployment, sharing their household with children and the hours involved in caring for their elderly parents. New Farm Branch of National Seniors contributes to the social wellbeing of residents in this areathrough our organised activities and the individual friendships resulting therefrom. At our next General Meeting Wednesday 3rd April at 09.30 for 10.00,staff from the PA Hospital will talk about ‘Donate Life’. This will be followed by lunch at the Brunswick Hotel. Our next monthly dinner on Friday 19th April from 6.00 pm,to which we particularly welcome those interested in National Seniors not able to attend day-time meetings, will be at the New Farm Bowls Club in Brunswick Street. Then on Wednesday 24th April there will be a bus tour leaving the Uniting Church in Merthyr Road at 08.30, returning about 16.30. The tour will travel to Rudd’s Pub for lunch - step back in time to Dad & Dave’s home at Nobby. The cost of $55 includes morning tea as well. Brisbane City Council is offering residents the opportunity to be among the first to tour the restored City Hall when it re-opens to the public. Free tours will be held on Saturday April 6 every half hour between 12-4pm, and Sunday April 7 every half hour between 8.30am-4pm. To book a place call (07) 3403 8463 during business hours or visit www.brisbane.qld.gov.au. The Lord Mayor’s

To purchase tickets go to www.lmct.org.au or contact Marianne Edmonds on (07) 3200 8299 for further information. dismantled in February 2010, took 14,000 hours of workmanship; the pipes have been repainted back from silver to the original 1930 gold. The organ is complemented by the auditorium’s recently installed 8,500 LED lights, a new dome ceiling and freshly polished floorboards. City Hall’s clock tower is as much a Brisbane icon as the building itself. For more than 30 years it ensured City Hall dominated Brisbane’s skyline as the city’s tallest building and it remained that way until the introduction of the first skyscrapers in the 1960s. The clock tower’s restoration included fire sprinklers and and restoring its heritage lift. The Council Chamber has undergone

Our March coach trip was a cruise on the Tweed River taking in the sights and lovely scenery of the Tweed Valley. Morning tea and the feeding of the various waterbirds was included on the cruise. After the cruise, we had lunch at the Coolangatta Tweed Heads Golf Club.

On the way home we stopped at Poppys Chocolate Shop in Beenleigh (which the ladies enjoyed). The April trip is to Police Horse & Dog Training Centre at Moggill and having lunch at Broncos Leagues Club before returning home.

ILL-health is more likely to lead to early retirement for men and women living in regional areas than for those residing in cities, according to University of Sydney research. The study, recently published in the Journal of Public Health, also found men and women that had health problems including stroke, cancer, osteoarthritis, depression, osteoporosis, or anxiety were more likely to be fully retired as a result of ill-health than people without those problems. The largest association with early retirement due to ill-health for men and women was stroke, followed by cancers other than melanoma, skin or breast cancer, said lead author Dr Sabrina Pit, from the Centre for Rural Health, School of Public Health, at the University of Sydney. “Our findings could be used by health practitioners, governments and employers to address specific health problems and reduce early retirement due to ill health, particularly in areas outside capital cities,” Dr Pit said. Using data from the Sax Institute’s 45 and Up Study, the investigation looked at the self-reported data of 21,719 women and 16,393 men aged 45 to 65 living in New South Wales.

It found that five percent of working aged men in cities were fully retired due to ill-health, compared to eight percent in inner regional areas and nine per cent in outer regional areas. In comparison four percent of working aged women in cities were fully retired because of illhealth compared to five percent for women in inner regions and six percent in outer regions. Men from outer regional areas were also more likely to be partially retired due to ill-health than their city counterparts, the study found This research could inform health policies for mature-age workers aimed at reducing early retirement, Dr Pit said. “Government spending on pensions and disability payments could be reduced by putting in place more programs that specifically address health problems leading to early retirement. “Our results could also be used by managers of large pension/superannuation or private health funds to support people who are at higher risk of early retirement. “For example, an industry-specific fund could subsidise health promotion programs in its industry that reduce the likelihood of people retiring early,” Dr Pit said.

Seasons residents put care into action

Janinie Peucker, Lifestyle Coordinator and Barbara Booth, Community Manager with Gloria and Warren Caple from Seasons Waterford West

SEASONS Waterford West Care Community held a fund-raiser for Bundaberg flood victims through a dinner function on

Wednesday 6 March. The crisis in Bundaberg became personal when residents Warren and Gloria Caple’s son

Warren and his family were in the centre of the devastation. Warren Caple said many elderly were amongst the thousands who were displaced and still without homes. Two weeks after the worst of the event he had only just located dear friends, a couple in their nineties. “My wife and I have been looking everywhere and nobody knew where they were,” said Warren. “The independent living facility where they lived went totally under and it turned out they were relocated prior to the registering of names at the various evacuation centres. Seasons’ staff and other residents were quick to rally support and came up with the fundraising evening where 120 guests enjoyed a dinner with live entertainment plus major prize giveaways and raffles. The evening raised $4000 which will be donated to Foodbank Queensland. Seasons Care Communities phone 1300 506 116.

Retirement Want to retire happy?

RETIREMENT is the perfect time to become the person you would like to be and do the things you have always wanted to do. No doubt doing everything you have always wanted

to do sounds great. It won’t happen by itself, however. This is true even if you have excellent health and a big pile of money in the bank when you retire. Retirement planning is important. You must take steps to ensure that when the bell rings to announce your retirement, you’re ready for what’s in front of you. The time available for marital, personal, social, creative, and family activities expands considerably when the hours previously taken up with full-time employment cease. How you manage time is just as important as when you are in the workforce. A good retirement income and the best retirement advice in the world won’t help if you don’t do something intelligent with them. You won’t find genuine joy and satisfaction by spending all your time sleeping, relaxing, loafing, and watching TV, hoping to live up to the ideal of a true idler. Many retired people with nothing to do wind up depressed and hating retirement. Now’s the time to make a list of all the things that you’d always wished you could do but put off because of work and other responsibilities. Have a look at your list and get started on making those things happen. They can be simple things like going to stay with a friend or family member for a weekend or something a little more out there like hiking in the outback. You have carte blanche now that you’re free of the 9 to 5 daily grind! Another way of making the most of retirement is to not get sucked into doing what others think you should do, including kissing the workforce goodbye forever. If you find after retirement that you really miss working, then why not go back to work part time if that’s what you want? Or get involved in volunteer work? This is your time!

Delamore visits Kooroomba Vineyard and Lavender Farm

Enjoying a Devonshire Tea

DELAMORE Retirement Community’s most recent bus trip was to the beautiful Kooroomba Vineyard and Lavender Farm at Mt Alford near Boonah. Residents enjoyed a scenic drive incorporating parts of the old Cobb and Co route on the way there, taking in the fresh country air. Once we arrived we had a look around the lovely premises, including the lavender shop and cellar door. Morning tea was next on the agenda and all enjoyed

a Devonshire Tea in the restaurant, overlooking the picturesque lavender, the wallabies hopping along the rows of grape vines, with a fabulous mountainous back drop. After a wine tasting we set off homeward bound to Kedron. Delamore will be holding their Open Day soon incorporating a sausage sizzle and Devonshire teas, so watch this space or visit the website for more information : www.delamoreretirement.com.au

Wellington Point Seniors 39 attended our March picnic at the point. Male members tied tarps to the posts to break down the breeze which enabled us to sit under shelter and enjoy our day. A two course meal was provided and was appreciated by all. The wind at times, made it hard to throw a god shot at quoits, the grass from all the rain we had made it impossible to play croquet but never the less we certainly had a very pleasant day spent with all of our friends. South Easterly winds did not spoil our day

It’s time to put age discrimination into retirement THERE are many causes for corporates to champion in this era of social engagement, sustainability and community development. Trendy initiatives seize the imagination, whilst often the major cultural changes we need remain simmering quietly beyond the headlines. Apparently age doesn’t come alone and for many Australians it brings with it unemployment and discrimination, yet we consistently fail to redress this cultural inequity. The aging workforce is something that will affect us all and employment for the mature aged is becoming increasingly difficult. However over the next decade, one of the major challenges facing businesses is the impact of an aging population and the inherent human resource strategies required. The question for Australia is just how can we get businesses to click on the ‘like’ button for mature age workers right now? Age discrimination is the number one hurdle for older jobseekers in Australia. Sure, younger jobseekers experience it too but not to the same extent. It’s imperative to get businesses to change our prejudice against older workers. Are we not robust enough to change workplace culture like we did for women and maternity leave? The hurdle for change is with industry not jobseekers. A well implemented workforce strategy that engages mature aged workers will improve morale, teamwork and productivity. We’ve known this but why has acceptance been slow and attempts to take action even slower? Studies have shown that older people stay in their jobs longer, are strongly committed to company performance, are more productive, have lower levels of absenteeism and are more flexible. They are more loyal, have considerable life skills, cost less to recruit and provide greater return on investment. You have to ask yourself, what’s so hard to understand about the benefits that a mature worker brings? Paradoxically older jobseekers are frequently told that they are either over or under qualified at interviews. The time of a ‘career for life’ went out of fashion with, well, mature age workers. We now accept that many of us will have multiple careers throughout our lives. With that comes a willingness from many mature jobseekers to retrain and try something new whilst building on their life skills. Industry must take this on board and start providing mature aged Australians with training opportunities. Training opportunities that are provided in the workplace are often not given to older people because of the belief that they offer only “limited returns”. With the current skills shortage facing Australia it’s critical that workplaces reskill mature aged workers whilst leveraging off a lifetime of often unrecognised soft skills. Start by contacting your local Australian Apprenticeships Centre today to review apprenticeship and training opportunities and funding, then combine this with the recent Corporate Champions program that will help businesses develop workforce strategies to recruit and retain older workers. The Program will provide businesses with advice on updating recruitment processes, developing skills programs and put into practice retention and mentoring program. Good businesses recognise the sense in striking the balance between the raw talent of youth and the experience of mature aged Australians. At BUSY At Work our oldest employee is turning 73 and 38 per cent of our workforce is mature age. So if you want a cause to champion, then start championing the cause of mature aged workers. It’s time to put age discrimination into retirement. Paul Miles is CEO of BUSY At Work a not-for-profit organisation within apprenticeships and employment and has recently been announced as a provider of the Australian Government’s Corporate Champions Program in Queensland.

Happy living at Palm Village

DAVID and Shirley Crawford moved from the NSW central coast to Pacific Palms Village 15 months ago to be closer to family, and they have never regretted it. They say they have adapted very well to the totally different environment “We have a lot of friends that you can see as much or as little as you choose, and you can choose whether or not to get involved,” Mr Crawford

said. “I had never played bowls in my life and now I am actually a bowling tragic, I’m very involved and Shirley who is very involved with computers and genealogy is giving classes in genealogy. “I am on the resident’s committee; I think it’s good to put something back in. “The social community is very good, once a month the bowling club puts on a meal that is fantastic

value. “We have a beautiful new home, we saw it being built and what you get for your money is fantastic, it’s purpose-built, top workmanship and top quality. “Here they have all the amenities and and we have our own internal shop which is good for people who might not be able to drive so much and you can be self-sufficient even if you can’t get out. “But shopping is so close

at Burpengary and The Hub has a good medical centre and a gym system which costs me nothing and I’m feeling the benefit. “Overall it’s a very good place to live and relax. “It’s got two pools, a licensed bowling club and a bowling green with real grass that is the best around and it’s well-maintained. “I gave my lawnmower away to the kids, it costs me $5 to get the grass cut so it’s not an expensive place to live.” Frank and Carol Hallinan moved in last August. They had lived in their former home 49 years until ill-health made them decide to downsize. “So here we are and we’re loving it,” Mrs Hallinan said. “We have company, you’re not on your own. “In our former home the older ones were moving out and younger ones were moving in with work commitments and children to look after and we were on our own.

“We checked out all the others (retirement villages) and came up with this one and we both enjoy living here. “We have one of the new homes, we looked at them being built and when we

saw the block we wanted we decided to buy and put our house on the market. “Once that sold we were ready to move in. “We’re more than happy to be living here.” Pacific Palms village is at

98 Eastern Service Rd (Bruce Highway) Burpengary. One of the new homes is still availaable at $219,000, most are $222,000. Phone 07 3888 4500.

and Surfers Paradise in the other. Accommodation is Bedand-Breakfast in a Federation-style building in grounds patrolled by a couple of Shetland ponies and an alpaca. All rooms are totally selfcontained and includes a kitchenette with a small fridge so guests do not have to dine out every night, unless they want to. Everything for breakfast is provided. Rooms are in two styles; the Spa suites have fire-

places and all rooms have fans - electric blankets on all beds are a welcome addition in an district where temperatures are usually 5-6 degrees cooler than on the coast. In fact that is often why people come, to experience a “real” winter and enjoy the many wintery events such as the very successful Christmas in July. Mount Tamborine has a population of 8,000 so there is plenty to see and do. To promote the scenic and other attractions of the area Woodleigh Retreat is offering a special four-night promotion from Sundays to Thursdays, from now until the end of June, aimed particularly at seniors who have the freedom to take a mid-week break. A list of activities makes you think four nights might not be enough. There’s the Gallery Walk full of craft shops, several wineries for tastings and very good lunches (here and elsewhere), walks graded from easy to more difficult (the Retreat has

maps and can advise on suitability), a cheese factory, a very good distillery with beautiful liqueurs and the Glow Worm Caves which are now open in the daytime

since someone worked out how to trick the worms into putting on their light show by day. Mt Tamborine is part of the original Mt Warning volcano which accounts

for the rich soil where almost anything grows green and lush. Why not see for yourself? For inquiries or bookings phone 5545 3121.

Queensland Government Bulk Water Rebate THE Queensland Government Bulk Water Rebate is a one-off payment of $80 to provide South East Queensland (SEQ) households with help in reducing cost-of-living expenses. For households that receive a water bill from an SEQ water service provider, the rebate will be applied as a deduction on either their first or second water bill of 2013. The rebate provides temporary relief from the rising cost of water bills for SEQ households. The Queensland Government has amalgamated the SEQ bulk water entities into a single entity, Seqwater, from 1 January 2013 as part of a longer-term solution to address bulk water costs. The rebate is provided to SEQ households who receive a water bill from their SEQ water service provider. The 5 SEQ water service providers are Unitywater, Queensland Urban Utilities, Logan City Council, Redland City Council and Gold Coast City Council. The rebate will also be provided to households in SEQ retirement villages,

including relocatable homes (also known as manufactured homes) that are solely for retirees, who do not receive a water bill directly from an SEQ water service provider. All households who pay water charges, either to their water service provider or their body corporate, will receive the rebate. Households that receive a water bill from their SEQ water service provider will receive the rebate as a deduction on their water bill. Some households will receive their rebate on their first water bill in 2013. The remainder of eligible households will receive their rebate on their second bill. The rebate also applies to households that pay their water charges directly to their body corporate. All these rebates should be received by 30 June 2013. For retirement village residents who don’t receive a water bill, the Queensland Government will provide a cheque directly to the retirement village operator, who will pass the rebate on as a deduction on outgoing (body corporate) fees.

Retirement Protect your retirement savings from investment scammers SCAMwatch and the Australian Crime Commission Board are urging Australians to protect themselves from the growing threat of investment scams. Investment scammers are commonly based offshore and target Australia because of high levels of superannuation and retirement savings. You may receive a call, email or letter out of the blue from someone offering an investment opportunity overseas. The scammer applies persuasive techniques to identify your financial status and encourages you to transfer money into sham investments. The scammer may encourage you to check that the investment offer is legitimate. If you research the offer, the scammer may have gone to elaborate lengths to trick you including: - manipulating search data - creating professional looking, but fake websites and publications - issuing online press releases that make false claims of outstanding corporate performance. In some instances, the scammer may even provide you with a log-in to view fake investment balances and growing returns. In reality, your money is gone. If you engage with the scammer, they may apply even greater pressure such as calling you multiple times a day,

using tailored scripts and delivering professional looking documents via courier – all to try and get you to part with more of your money. The scammer will likely ask you to transfer the money electronically to an overseas-based account. It is rare to recover money sent to scammers. SCAMwatch urges you to be on alert - these scams are incredibly sophisticated and very difficult for even experienced investors to identify. I RECENTLY went to a new GP. After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing “fairly well” for my age. A little concerned about that comment, I couldn’t resist asking him,” Do you think I’ll live to be 80?” He asked, “Do you smoke tobacco or drink beer or wine?” “Oh no,” I replied. “I’m not doing drugs, either.” Then he asked, “Do you eat ribeye steaks and barbecued ribs?” I said, “No, my other doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy.” “Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?” “No, I don’t,” I said. He asked, “Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lot of sex?” “No,” I said. “I don’t do any of those things.” He looked at me and said, “Then why do you want to live to 80?”

Wisdom from Seniors The best way to forget all your troubles is to wear tight shoes. The nice part about living in a small town is that when you don’t know what you’re doing, someone else does. The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight because by then your body and your fat are really good friends.

Red wine pill could lead the way for anti-aging process A GROUP of scientists aiming to imitate the life-extending qualities created by a chemical found in dark chocolate and red wine say they have figured out how this compound functions - and its ability to fight diabetes, obesity, and even some cancers. This groundbreaking research was published in the journal Science recently, and could pave the way for medicine that could mimic resveratrol - a compound that pharmaceutical industries have spent millions of dollars attempting to explore how it can be used to improve the body’s defences against aging and disease. The study was led by Harvard geneticist David Sinclair, and revealed a link between a group of enzymes called sirtuins - which trigger proteins that regenerate cells - and resveratrol. This link could open doors to a new design of resveratrolrelated drugs. Sinclair explained, “Ultimately, these drugs would treat one disease, but unlike drugs of today, they would prevent 20 others. In effect, they would slow aging.” The target enzyme, SIRT1, goes into action on its own via exercise and calorie restriction, but it can also be improved through activators. The most common naturally-active trigger is resveratrol small amounts of which are found in red wine - however, more powerful synthetic activators are currently being created. Until recently, the basic science surrounding resveratrol had been called into question, despite over a decade of extensive research on this topic. There have already been significant results in some trials with implications for a range of diseases including type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease,

FEELING GOOD

Prostate health problems – a thing of the past? 1 in 3 men over 50 have benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) commonly known as an enlarged prostate, this number rises to nearly 80% of men when they reach 70. While BPH is not fatal like prostate cancer, it can cause a lot of pain and inconveniences. Common symptoms are frequent and painful urination, and for some cases sexual performance is affected. It is no wonder that we have reached epidemic proportions, yet so few men talk openly about it.

For those who have approached their doctors for advice, more often than not, an effective treatment is quickly and conveniently made available. Surgery is usually the last-resort due to the unpleasant nature of the side-effects such as incontinence and impotence. Most cases can be adequately treated with orally taken over-the-counter medication such as the popular Magnus Shield, developed and distributed by Graminex Australia.

According to Mr. Indra, spokesperson for Graminex Australia, men in general do tend to be tight-lipped about their current condition. “Its normal for men to feel uncomfortable talking about their prostate and their symptoms (of BPH), that’s okay, we understand, “says Indra, who does his best to personally answer questions from individual callers. He has spoken to many concerned wives whose husbands are reluctant to acknowledge the issue. The key to this problem, he believes is to slowly encourage a culture where men should not feel ashamed to talk about their medical condition, especially if it concerns their “personal equipment”. For the men who are willing to seek help to fight for their health and well-being, Magnus Shield has proven to be a very effective solution. Bill was suffering from the symptoms in silence on a daily basis and at first believed that it was part of the normal aging process all men go through. That was until he spoke to a close personal friend who suggested that he get some medical advice. This led to him being prescribed some Magnus Shield by his family doctor and the results have been positive thus far. According to Bill, “Since taking MAGNUS SHIELD tablets for the past 3 months, I have noticed an improvement. Previously I would go to the loo 5-6 times a night, and now I only go 2-3 times, even less sometimes. Another long-time sufferer Paul, did not depend wait around for help and instead actively sought it out. One day Paul stumbled upon an article written in a health magazine about the prostate and this led to him trying out Magnus Shield for himself. “I found this tablets Magnus Shield from magazine. I found it helps me to empty my bladder in night time, relief the pain while passing water. It really works for me. I’m feeling better now,” says Paul. The good news is that more men like Bill and Paul are taking a more

proactive approach to taking care of their own health. In order to further encourage this trend Graminex Australia has been working together with non-profit prostate support groups in Victoria to help bring awareness to men. Indra feels it’s only a matter of time before practically all men learn the ins and outs of taking care of their prostate. “Eventually we hope to get more men to come forward and share about their prostate issues. This is our way of showing our support for this common condition”, says Indra. Trevor Cottle, who is in charge of running the regular meetings with his prostate support group in Box Hill, Victoria, underwent prostate surgery 8 years ago and lost his brother to prostate cancer, feels the same. He added, “ the prostate support groups have been formed by men, for men, who are interested in prostate health issues and want to do something about.” For enquiries about joining a prostate support group, visit www.magnusprime.com for more information. For enquires about Magnus Shield, call 1300 760 627.

Government Improves Home Medicine Program HEALTH Minister Tanya Plibersek said patients will benefit from a move by the Government to strengthen the program that helps patients who are at risk of accidently taking the wrong medication. After it emerged that some checks were not taking place in patients’ homes under the Home Medicines Review program, an accredited pharmacist will now have to visit the patient where they live. “The evidence is clear that the very best way for us to help patients who might be at risk of accidently taking the wrong medicine is for an accredited pharmacist to visit the person at their home. It is important for a pharmacist to see for themselves what a patient is taking as those at risk of not using medication correctly could be elderly, infirm or perhaps may have poor English literacy.” Ms Plibersek said it was unacceptable that under the program some 1,500 medicine checks each month were taking place outside the home. After consultation with the Pharmacy Guild the Government will now require an accredited pharmacist to visit the patients’ homes and have access to all medicines they are using. This includes prescription medicines, over the counter and complementary medicines.

“In the future, medication reviews under the program will only be conducted outside the home of clients where there is pre-approval for defined circumstances – such as patient or pharmacist safety, or for cultural reasons.” To ensure the best result for consumers the Government will also require that reviews, including interviews and written reports for general practitioners, may only be conducted by accredited pharmacists. The Fifth Community Pharmacy Agreement with the Pharmacy Guild

contains $663.4 million in funding to support pharmaceutical services which offer the best value and improved health outcomes for Australians. Outside the home, there are other medication management programs by which pharmacists can reduce the risk of medication misadventure, such as MedsCheck and Clinical Interventions. There are also a number of other minor changes to improve accountability under the program. A complete list of all the changes to come into effect from 15 March 2013 can be found at www.5cpa.com.au.

Medical and Oral Health, help us find a connection THERE is evidence of a connection between medical health and oral health. Many major medical conditions (e.g. Diabetes) have the capacity to reduce oral health levels; however oral health levels can also worsen many medical conditions. The APSL is seeking to promote Government awareness of this, and the extension of eligibility for the Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme to include Dental Specialist Services for people who live more than 50 km from the nearest public dental specialist service. To do so, APSL needs to demonstrate the connection between medical and oral health and that funding the extensions of eligibility criteria will have social and economic benefits (for people and governments) in reducing the financial impact of major health conditions.

Is your BOD killing you? HIGH Blood Pressure, Obesity, and Diabetes (BOD) kill more people every year around the world than any terrorist attack! In the twenty-seven years I have been in clinical practice, the number of new patients coming in with these problems has risen alarmingly. There doesn’t seem to be much argument that genetic predisposition and environmental factors contribute to both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes but there is more and more discussion about treatment principles. You can’t do anything about your genetic gifts or curses, but you can positively influence your internal environment from which hope springs for those with Diabetes. Diabetes causes tissue damage and inflammation. One of the sites for damage occurs in the lining of your arteries and over time robs them of their elasticity so that stiffening occurs and up goes your blood pressure. At the same time as your blood pressure goes up, your circulation begins to go down particularly if your arteries are choked with cholesterol. Vital organs such as your heart, kidneys and liver deteriorate without an adequate supply of blood. When I began in practice, the majority of people I saw with diabetes were between fifty and seventy. Their type of diabetes was termed MOD - Mature Onset Diabetes. Now, because patients with diabetes are younger and younger, the term MOD has given way to Type 2 Diabetes. This shift should be telling us something and clearly pointing the way to a different, more effective, integrated treatment principle. Part of this should be a much closer scrutiny of how we are fuelling our internal environment - in other words our DIET! We should be asking - Why is Type 2 Diabetes sweeping the world with scant respect for age? Some of the reasons are listed below: 1. People are eating more and more sugar (sucrose) the silent killer that has crept into almost all manufactured food leaving the blood stream awash with intolerable levels of glucose. The other component of sucrose (fructose), when not directed to our energy needs is stored in fat cells as triglycerides and fatty acids. It’s easy to see then that excess sugar makes you fat! 2. People are eating more and more hydrogenated fats (fast foods) that promote inflammation and obesity. 3. People are choosing highly refined carbohydrates such as white flour over foods such as peas and beans that

contain Vitamin B6. (B6 is a powerful ally in the fight against Diabetic Neuropathy and has an important role to play in chemical signalling in the brain via neurotransmitters that control our moods.) 4. People are drinking more and more alcohol at a younger and younger age. All alcohol is an irritant to the gut lining and promotes inflammation through malabsorption. 5. People have to be almost surgically removed from television sets and computers so there is little or no time for exercise. 6. People are plagued with more and more stress. This elevates a hormone called cortisol. Elevated cortisol levels raise blood pressure and increase insulin resistance. Long term cortisol elevation also increases Visceral Adipose Tissue (Fat) around the abdomen.People with obesity are more likely to contract Diabetes. (I wrote a book in 2001 called 100% ALIVE & HAPPY which details my method of meditation - a powerful antidote to Stress.) Our chances of developing Type 2 Diabetes increase with age. The conclusion I draw from this is that the longer we assault our bodies with poor food choices, the more unlikely it is that our organs such as the pancreas can perform adequately. Just think for a moment what would happen if you put diesel fuel into a car with a motor designed to run on petrol. Your pancreas produces insulin but it also plays a major role in digestion. A great many diabetics I see, although they are overweight, are badly nutritionally deprived of a range of vitamins and minerals that are the essential spokes in the wheel of Good Health. I see these deficiencies time and again in diabetics. Perhaps the most consistent deficiency I’ve observed in a high percentage of my patients with Type 2 diabetes is low Vitamin D. Diseases of the arteries can parallel low Vitamin D count. Insufficient Vitamin D can also be implicated in High Blood Pressure. From my observations, there is an inverse relationship between Vitamin D levels and Blood Sugar Levels. In other words, the higher the Blood Sugar, the lower the Vitamin D.One of the tests I suggest for all my new Type 2 Diabetes Patients is evaluation of Vitamin D. (Vitamin D should not be taken without the advice of a health professional who should know any special circumstances that may apply to you.) There certainly isn’t any single magic bullet when treating people with Elevated Blood Pressure, Obesity and Diabetes. An integrated approach, including the restoration of the balance of all Vitamins and Minerals forms a safe basis for my treatment when helping patients with BOD. Having trouble reaching your line?

THE portable Mrs Pegg’s Handy Line is your answer! Having lower line levels, they are easier to reach than conventional clothesline and so much kinder to your joints. This also helps with your balance which can prevent falls. For those with a walker, washing can be placed in a plastic container on the seat and then sit down with the container on your lap to peg. It’s a good idea to leave pegs on the Handy Line so they are easily accessible. The handy Lines are lightweight (only 3kg) hold a full wash load and can be positioned near the house so heavy wet washing doesn’t have to be carried too far. They can be left outside permanently or easily folded for storage. Washing is a chore, but with a Mrs Pegg’s Handy Line, the task is made so much easier. If it is raining, it can be placed under cover or inside where household heating can be utilized. This is a huge saving on power bills because the Handy Lines completely eliminate the use of electric dryers. Quilts, covers and blankets aren’t a problem because they can be

“tented” over the top of the line and with the airflow underneath they dry in no time. For those who travel in caravans, the small Standard Handy line is ideal as it can be placed just outside the van to dry washing. Many people store them under the bed when travelling. With Mother’s Day around the corner, the Handy Line makes a great present or if you would like one for yourself, your family will appreciate the fact they don’t have to think further than the energy saving Mrs Pegg’s Handy Line. Peptides could help treat Parkinson’s THE hormones at the centre of the Australian sports doping scandal are being investigated for their potential to treat Parkinson’s disease. Australian scientists are exploring the use of peptides, which help human cells to repair and regenerate, to combat the degenerative nerve illness. Parkinson’s disease occurs when the cells that produce the chemical dopamine die or become damaged. It is characterised by involuntary shaking and muscle stiffness. Deakin University researcher Dr Richard Williams, who is working with scientists from the Australian National University and the Florey Neuroscience Institute, said peptides could be used to effectively build a new brain. He said the team had already created the tissue structure needed for cells to grow. The project aims to combine this tissue with a patient’s own stem cells to regenerate dopamine cells. “We expect that when implanted the material and stem cells would be accepted by the brain as normal tissue and grow to replace the damaged or dead cells,” Dr Williams said. Dr Williams said the creation of the tissue structure also had the potential to treat parts of the body which struggle to repair themselves, such as cartilage, muscle and heart cells, bones and teeth. “Ultimately, it will be like taking your car to the garage to have new parts fitted to replace the wornout ones,” he said. An Australian Crime Commission report last month identified widespread misuse of prohibited peptides in professional sport.

BULIMBA Denture Clinic is a complete one-stop denture service offering the latest Injection System Technique to create full or partial dentures and custom made mouthguards. Dental prosthetist Greg Rowston, who has 25 years experience in the dental industry, opened

the practice in October 2011 due to a strong demand in the area. Everything is designed and constructed in the clinics’ fully accredited dental laboratory situated on the premises. Practice manager Rosemary Rowston says this has major benefits for patients. “Everything that

we do here is manufactured on-site by our qualified dental technicians using Australian Government T.G.A approved materials,” she said. “By doing this we offer a more efficient service and a better ‘quality control’ of the denture. Some clinic patients are quite interested to know

Move more for better bones!

ABOUT 70 per cent of adults in Australia are not active enough – which is bad news for their bone health. While good calcium intake and vitamin D from sunshine are important for maintaining strong bones, so is exercise and some types of exercise are better for your bones than others. ‘I think most people know exercise is good for general health but they may not be aware that exercise is of great benefit to our bone health,’ says Dr. Sonia Davison, an endocrinologist at Jean Hailes for Women’s Health. ‘Exercise is important for bone health throughout life but it becomes particularly important later when issues such as fractures and osteoporosis become more common.’ Dr. Davison is surging women to move more to boost their bone health. Weight bearing exercises such as running, walking, skipping, dancing and even Zumba are particularly good, says Dr. Davison. ‘With these exercises you take the load through your body so your skeleton is used for what it is actually designed for,’ says Dr. Davison. Load placed on bone leads to increased bone formation at the site where the load is greatest, too. ‘Exercises that improve balance, such as Tai Chi ,

Pilates and yoga are also good as with good balance you are less likely to suffer falls and fractures,’ she says. Resistance training, such as working out with weights, is the third type of exercise important for our bones. It strengthens our muscles so they can support loads on our joints. While most physical activity benefits our health in some way, Dr. Davison says these three types of exercise are the best for our bones. ‘Swimming and cycling don’t really help our bone health and strength because they don’t encourage you to support the load through your skeleton. In water you float and when you cycle you are sitting down,’ says Dr. Davison. ‘If nothing else, at least go for a walk a few time a week for around 40 minutes or more – walking is great because it works on your balance and it includes resistance training and weight bearing. Push your body a little but you shouldn’t feel any pain or discomfort when you exercise and if you haven’t exercised for a while, ease yourself into it and perhaps talk to a doctor or physiotherapist first to find out what is best for you and your bone health.

Life can be funny...most of the time A PRETTY young speech therapist at QE11 was getting nowhere with the Stammerers Action Group, in spite of trying every exercise in the book. In exasperation she told the group “If you can tell me the name of the town where you were born without stuttering, I will have a wild passion session with you ‘till your muscles ache. So, who is first?” Trevor piped up “B-b-b-birmingham”. “No good” said the therapist. Who’s next?” Hamish raised his hand and said “P-p-p-p-paisley”. “That’s no better” she said, “No passion for you I’m afraid. So, what about you Shaun?” The Irishman tool a deeeep breath and blurted out “London”. “Brilliant” said the therapist. And immediately set about living up to her promise. After about 15 minutes the couple paused for breath and paddy said.....”dd-d-d-d-derry”. Courtesy Sabot March 2013

1. Always wear the best walking shoes possible. Seek advice from a podiatrist. 2. Support your digestion with apple cider vinegar. 3. Eat cold water fish (cod, tuna, salmon, and sardines) at least three times a week.

4. Use cod liver oil as a supplement. 5. Try more oats and mussels in your diet. These are rich in proteoglycans, which are responsible for “bounce” in your joints. 6. Glucosamine normalises cartilage metabolism, so aim to have at least 1500mg a day. Available through pharmacies. 7. Eat more whole grain cereals, hard nuts and apple - these foods are rich in silicon. 8. Coffee, alcohol and processed foods make pain worse. Avoid wherever possible. 9. Use a natural pain reliever and anti-inflammatory such as Cumerone, derived from tumeric. Available through pharmacies. 10. Try ginger in cooking for its antiinflammatory effects. 11. Take Vitamins C and D to help collagen production (strengthens connective tissue). 12. Use massage, chiropractic, magnet therapy as needed. 13. Keep exercising and on the move! Vegesorb - moisturiser based on nature DO you find that winter plays havoc with your skin, or that a dry skin condition frustrates throughout the year? If so, why not add Vegesorb to your shopping list. Vegesorb is a non-greasy, easy-to-use moisturizer based on natural almond and apricot kernel oils, both known for their penetrative abilities (unlike sorbolenes, which are designed to act as barriers, with many containing petrochemical by-products). Fragrance and colour free, Vegesorb is gentle; safe to use externally on sensitive and problematic skins, including those affected by eczema and psoriasis. Animal friendly, Vegesorb is not tested on animals nor does it contain animal content. Conveniently available in health food shops in all Australian states as well as in most Queensland pharmacies, Vegesorb comes in three sizes (with the 100-gram tube ‘handbag handy’, even on overseas flights) and is economically priced. Just when you thought there couldn’t be more: Vegesorb is 100% Australian made and owned; manufactured and packaged in a Brisbane factory registered with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). As well as being a full-body moisturiser suitable, too, for after-sun care, Vegesorb can be used to remove makeup; as an after-shave; during massages; for cracked heels; as an alternative to shampoo for dry scalp (massage Vegesorb into scalp and rinse out), and as a soap alternative (50/50 mix of Vegesorb and water). Vegesorb is also used successfully as a base for compounding in several pharmacies. And let’s not forget the grandchildren: Vegesorb is excellent for babies, helping to moisturise and nourish skin affected by nappy rash. As with other skincare products, use as directed. If irritation develops, discontinue use. Also, do not use Vegesorb on broken skin and only use externally. Want to learn more? Feel free to visit the comprehensive yet easyto-read Vegesorb website: www.vegesorb.com.au. The Testimonials alone give insightful first-hand experiences into the nature and capacity of this product. HOLIDAY & Leisure Open for business in Tasmania AFTER the devastating bushfires in Southern Tasmania in January, tourism now is even more important to the Northern towns and communities which were largely unaffected. Given that late Summer and Spring are ideal for

visiting the region, it makes perfect sense to pack up and “do” Northern Tassie for a refreshing break and to enjoy the area’s many attractions. The Federal Hotels Group has launched an innovative package

Cradle Mountain looking across Dove Lake

combining stays at Cradle Mountain Chateau and Launceston’s Country Club Tasmania. There’s a minimum 2 night itinerary which can be extended to any number of extra days, and as we found on a recent trip, an ideal plan would be to spend 5 or 6 nights simply because there’s so much to see and do. At Cradle Mountain, the invigorating fresh air, the spectacular scenery, the healthy walks [for any level of fitness, including designated wheelchair paths] and the abundant wildlife are complemented by comfortable accommodation at the Chateau. Here you’ll find log fires, excellent cuisine and even regular whisky

tastings. There’s also the Tasmanian Tiger Exhibition and The Wilderness Gallery with its superb photographic collection….Australia’s largest. Back in Launceston, you’re right on the doorstep of the beautiful Tamar Valley. Perhaps not as widely known as Australia’s

We play with real trains THE excitement of a day out by steam train commences at Roma St as you go walk along the platform to find your carriage with a reserved seat. It is then a quick walk to the head of the train to inspect the great “Iron Horse” which is simmering away quietly waiting for the grand departure. Final boarding announcements are made , the guard blows his whistle and waves the green flag and the engine bursts into life with it’s whistle blowing to signal departure and steams out of the platform heading for the day’ destination. Like the sound of the above ? The Australian Railway Historical Society (Queensland Division) is in its 56th year of operating rail tours. Over 960 excursions operated by both steam and diesel hauled trains to many destinations in Queensland have been run by the Society since 1957, of course the steam hauled tours are very popular and give passengers a nostalgic tour in travel of a bygone era – travelling in style in the heritage carriages. The annual Rail and Sail to Redcliffe is on again on Saturday May 11th. Cruise aboard the MV Queenslander from Southbank to Redcliffe and return by steam train from Sandgate, This tour operates in reverse also with the option of the steam train journey first and return by boat from Redcliffe. A bbq lunch is served on the boat as it cruises across the bay. On Saturday June 1st the train will explore the southern suburbs as it steams down to Bethania and back to Thorneside before returning to the city. Lunch is included in the fare on this tour also so come along and enjoy a great day’s outing. Looking for a great mid year adventure? Come along with us on the Great Landers Tour and visit some famous pubs in north west Queensland. The first leg of the journey is aboard the Westlander in comfortable sleeping cabins from Brisbane to Charleville where we join a coach and head to Barcaldine. Continuing next day the coach proceeds to Winton, Kynuna and McKinlay to Cloncurry for the overnight stop. The next leg of the journey takes us to Mt Isa where we join the Inlander for the overnight trip to Townsville (change trains again) and board the Sunlander for the return trip to Brisbane. This great tour aboard the iconic Lander trains is expected to sell quickly and don’t forget seniors /pension card holders can use your vouchers on this tour. To book or order a brochure phone our office on 3252 1759 between 10am and 3.00pm Tuesday, Wednesdays and Thursdays. A recorded message operates at other times.

HOLIDAY & Leisure The Taj Mahal - the most beautiful building in the world

ONE simply can’t exaggerate the beauty of the Taj Mahal. One needs to know the incredibly romantic story of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan. Shah Jahan was simply Prince Khurram when they were betrothed in 1607 and she was Arjumand Banu Begum. They were married in 1612, the date selected by court astrologers. After the

wedding celebration Khurram gave her the title ‘Mumtaz Mahal’ Begum which means Chosen one of the Palace. She became the love of his life. He had previously taken two other wives, but by all accounts, other than siring a child with each, it is said he showed little interest in exercising his polygamous rights over them.

According to what I have read, Mumtaz travelled all over the Mughal Empire with her husband Shah Jahan, as he became known. Court historians go to great lengths to document the relationship the couple enjoyed. She is portrayed as the perfect wife, with no political aspirations. Indeed how could she. They had fourteen children . And alas it was in 1631 that Mumtaz died after giving birth to the fourteenth child. The Shah was inconsolable and remained in secluded mourning for a year. The construction of The Taj Mahal, the final resting place of Mumtaz Mahal commenced in 1632 and was completed in 1653. On the morning of our tour, the bus parked well away from the Taj. Then a battery bus took us closer to the entrance, thus reducing the danger of pollution. We walked through the great gateway, with the vision of the wondrous building in front of us. We were never rushed and so there

was plenty of time for photos until we slowly walked towards the building itself. None of us spoke. We were in such awe of the beauty of the Taj. We put on cloth shoes to enter the Building and at the same time, marvelling at the intricate work of the marble. Alas inside was crowded and no photos could be taken. The perfect symmetry of the whole complex was

relaxed as we peered through the perforated marble screen towards the two caskets, studded with precious stones. The tombstone of Mumtaz Mahal is in the centre and the Shah Jahan on the right, although, of course, the actual cenotaphs lie in a crypt directly below. The symmetry of the building is perfect. The architect, Isa, also designed the Blue Mosque

by Antoinette O’Connor in Istanbul. It is built of the finest Indian marble onto a bed of 22 deep wells, protecting the building forever. The four minarets lean out at angle of 92 degrees so that they can never fall onto the dome. A thousand elephants brought the marble to the site, where 20,000 workman took 20 years to complete the building. On the sides are 2 identical struc-

Better late than never At least, that’s what music and comedy duo The Babbling Trillbillys believe. Their one-hour show Better Late Than Never encapsulates this positive attitude towards ageing, in a lively, musical revue combining familiar songs (some with surprising new lyrics) and a great deal of quirky, even outrageous, comedy. Joy Winnel, a selfdescribed ‘rock chick’, lends her fabulous voice to such well-known standards as Fever and What a Wonderful World, but also lets rip

with a memorable version of Mack the Knife – unleashing the frustrations all of us feel when faced with opening modern plastic packaging! The other half of The Babbling Trillbillys duo, actor Janet Findlay, demonstrates her skill as a comedienne – milking the comic possibilities of an hilarious ‘love triangle’ scenario, that is woven throughout the revue style show. Better Late Than Never has been created by two women with a passion for music and humour, and a determination not

to let age stand in the way of enjoying life. As Janet says, “Enjoyment is one faculty we have that doesn’t age!” Adds Joy, “Yes, but it has to be exercised … use it or lose it!” So keep your capacity for enjoyment tuned up and in good shape! And if you ever need some help with that, enquire about booking The Babbling Trillbillys, either through our Facebook page, or by phoning Joy on 07 3389 7760 mob 0401 389 466 or Janet 0498 036 206. You won’t be disappointed.

The original Tivoli Lovelies are back Music and comedy duo The Babbling Trillbillys

FIND yourself on the wrong side of sixty, trying to make sense of it all? Looking back down the long corridor of the past, contemplating an ever-shortening

future? Forget it! There’s nothing to analyse, nothing to philosophise about. But there is fun, laughter and appreciation of being alive now. Still.

THE Tivoli Lovelies have been entertaining audiences for decades and show no signs of stopping! They wowed spectators in the 1940s with their colourful and lively dancing at Tivoli Theatres around the country. Now, the original Lovelies are back, featuring in Sundowner at Gardens Theatre from 16th to 17th April. Starring Helen Morse (Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Eye of the Storm), Sundowner is a deeply moving play about the love that binds families together. It tells the story of so many Australian families, exploring the fear, humour and dignity of those living with younger onset dementia through the eyes of three generations. Helen Morse gives a stellar performance as Peggy, taking the audience through an incredible journey and tackling the heavy subject of Alzheimer’s with joy, humour and sensitivity. Sundowner sends the message that it’s not the end,

it’s part of life. Developed by production company KAGE with the help of Alzheimer’s Australia, the work grew out of two years of research, drawing from the stories and experiences of families and carers of people with Alzheimer’s. KAGE is well-known for integrating dance and physical theatre into their productions. The Tivoli Lovelies tapdance as Peggy fights to distinguish the past from the present. As Peggy loses control of her memories, the Lovelies signal the passing of time and old-world glamour in a way that is charming and comforting. With a combined age of 746, the Tivoli Lovelies have been described as potential show-stealers in this moving production. Book your tickets to Sundowner today. Concession tickets are $32 and can be booked by calling GardensTix on 07 3138 4455.

IN South Australia’s capital, they call it “March Madness”. To us visitors, it’s a cornucopia of cultural delights, with so many things happening in the space of a month [and in fact the whole summer/autumn season] that it’s hard to keep up. For a start, this month there’s the world famous exhibition of paintings by English artist JMW Turner [1775-1851], at the Art Gallery of South Australia. This is one of the most important events in this year’s calendar, bringing to Australia a carefully curated selection of Turner’s works from the Tate Gallery, London plus other Turners from collections in Australia. Recently I had the privilege of seeing this exhibition which is notable for its outstanding attention to detail in hanging and lighting. Any fan of early English “impressionism” will be more than happy with the chronological display of Turner’s talents as his art progressed from childhood sketchings to his later abstract works. “Vibrant Adelaide” takes

its leading role in the Australian Arts scene very seriously. Since the first Adelaide Festival in 1960, the city has set the standard for Arts events in Australia. It has, along the way, attracted some outstanding Directors including Sir Robert Helpmann, Barrie Kosky and Robyn Archer contributing to the festival’s international reputation. In 2004 Adelaide was the first Australian city to stage Wagner ’s Ring Cycle, a hugely ambitious

[and risky] operatic event which turned out to be a tremendous success. In large measure this success is due to the 1973 opening of the Adelaide Festival Centre, which provides several performance spaces ranging from a full-size concert hall to smaller venues, restaurants and display areas. The centre opened just 3 months before its famous cousin, the Sydney Opera House [cop that, Sydney!]. Not perhaps the icon that the

Another important event this year is the 100th anniversary of Her Majesty’s Theatre in September, with Barry Humphries as Patron. For a century, this splendid theatre has hosted world famous performers such as Dame Joan Sutherland, Luciano Pavarotti, Rudolf Nureyev, Sir John Gielgud…and even Slim Dusty! In the recent Adelaide Festival, Her Majesty’s was home to a performance of “One Man, Two Guv’nors” , a tour de force from the National Theatre of Great Britain which attracted rave reviews. There’s no doubt that Adelaide has much going for it when it comes to art and culture. Year round, there’s so much happening that no matter when you go, there’s bound to be something exciting to see. Added to that is the proximity of the famous wine growing areas such as the Barossa and Clare valleys, and you have

Very Senior friendly Cinema Complex TOOMBUL Cinemas, one of Brisbane’s newest Cinema Complexes, opened its doors in August 2012 and has welcomed the local community in to see the latest quality films in its sparkling new cinema complex. The cinema has proved popular with the local community with distinct thought having gone into the design of its foyers and theatres, seniors especially rating it very highly. Many of the theatres have been built with raked seating as opposed to stadium seating; to allow ease of access in and out of the theatres, on the understanding that stairs and dimmed lights can prove a challenge for some. Locals have also taken advantage of Toombul Cinemas’ fantastic Seniors Club Online which is free to join for any one over the age of 60 and gives members $8 tickets to standard films every day. Seniors can sign up online at toombulcinemas.com.au or the friendly staff at the cinema are on hand to assist in joining. Toombul Cinemas also host regular events for

seniors, with special screenings for their members including a complimentary morning tea before the film. These screenings give seniors the opportunity to see the latest films, enjoy a free morning tea and catch up with friends, all at a fantastic price of $8. The next Toombul Cinemas Seniors Screening scheduled is for the new film, Hyde Park on Hudson starring Bill Murray on Thursday the 18th of April at 10am. In this comedydrama, Bill Murray plays the role of a lifetime as US President Franklin D Roosevelt. Toombul’s General Manager, Toni Austin says, “I look forward to hosting our senior’s Screenings, as it’s a great opportunity for us to meet and chat with our customers and discuss upcoming films. I can’t wait for them to see Bill Murray’s amazing performance in Hyde Park on Hudson.” With Senior’s Screenings becoming increasingly popular at the newly opened cinema, movie lovers are encouraged to get in quick to secure their seats.

centres to provide privacy and reasonable conditions for the public. Some centres provided small unused rooms while others merely provide a table in the shopping concourse. It is common for peoples’ private business to be easily overheard by nearby shoppers. On one occasion a shopper sat down at a JP table to eat his lunch while business was in progress. Clients often have to wait in long queues to receive attention. Branch Secretary Mr Roger Clarke JP (Qual), pointed out that JP’s provided a voluntary service to the public and attract shoppers to shopping centres. They should be afforded suitable conditions to provide their services in private. He said JP’s are an indispensable arm of the Government and it was totally inappropriate to have facilities situated in noisy commercial areas where any passing member of the public can view or hear confidential documents and/or conversations. There is an obvious need for security.

THE Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has launched guidelines to support efforts by dating and romance websites to combat scammers. Dating and romance scams cost Australians more than $21 million in 2011, with more than 2100 individuals reporting scammers to the ACCC. The average loss for a victim reporting a scam to the ACCC was over $20 000. “Dating and romance website operators have taken significant steps to tackle the problem of online scammers, but as the problem continues to grow the ACCC has taken the lead in organising a joint effort,” Deputy Chairman Dr Michael Schaper said. “Online dating is an

increasingly common way for people to meet each other. However, the growing number of scammers undermining public trust in legitimate businesses like dating and romance websites is an area of concern to the ACCC.” “These scams often see a genuine user of a dating website being contacted by a potential admirer who

is a scammer in disguise. After forming a relationship with the victim, the scammer plays on emotional triggers to get the victim to provide money, gifts or personal details,” Dr Schaper said. The ACCC has headed a working group to develop voluntary best practice guidelines for the industry.

Whatever happened to …Rosemary Clooney by Kevin Trask

ROSEMARY Clooney was a famous American singer and actress who had hit songs in the 1950’s and appeared in films and television shows. Rosemary was loved by millions, but her life was not as “rosy’ as many of her fans would have thought. Rosemary Clooney was born in Maysville Kentucky on the 23rd of May 1928. She was the eldest of three children and had a sister Betty and brother Nick. Her childhood was very difficult as her father had a drinking problem and when Rosemary was fifteen her mother re-married and moved to California taking Nick with her. Rosemary and Betty stayed with their father until he deserted them. They became a singing duo to support themselves and in 1945 they had a regular spot on a radio station in Cleveland Ohio as The Clooney Sisters. Rosemary and Betty sang with The Tony Pastor Band and made recordings. They split up in 1948 and Rosemary went to New York to try her luck as a solo singer. Her brother Nick became a television newscaster and he is the father of the famous actor George Clooney. Rosemary was signed by Columbia Records and began working with producer Mitch Miller. She was forced to record lousy material which included obscure children’s songs and novelty compositions. Despite Rosemary’s anxiety she had a series of hit songs which included Botch-AMe, Sailor Boys Have Talk to me in English, Where will the Dimple Be and Come on-a My House. Rosemary begged Miller to let her record decent material, but when he did so he put the song on the “B” side of the records. Her recordings with screen legend Marlene Dietrich in 1952 were very popular. Her first film appearance was in 1953 as a performer in The Stars Are Singing. This was followed by lead roles in Here Come the Girls, Red Garters and then White Christmas where she co-starred with Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Vera Ellen. Rosemary married José Ferrer and they had five children. In 1956 Rosemary Clooney had her own variety television series which was shown in Australia. She left Columbia Records in 1958 and worked with several record labels which included MGM, RCA, Reprise, DOT and Coral Records. Whilst at RCA she recorded the famous Fancy Meeting You Here album of duets with Bing Crosby. Rosemary was divorced from José Ferrer in 1962, they remarried the following year but divorced again in 1967. Rosemary was standing very close to her friend Robert Kennedy when he was assassinated at the Los Angeles Ambassador Hotel and she suffered a nervous breakdown as a result of the trauma. She made a comeback when Bing Crosby invited her to join him on his 50th anniversary tour. She began

recording at Concord Records in 1977 and produced some of her best recordings over the next twenty five years. In 1991 Rosemary gave her first Carnegie Hall concert and returned again in 1997 where she was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Singers. José Ferrer passed away in 1992. Rosemary married her long time friend Dante DiPaolo in 1996. Rosemary Clooney was one of the great interpreters of the American Songbook and injected a part of herself into the songs she sang. Rosemary did guest roles in television series and was nominated for an Emmy Award for her role in an episode of ER. She loved Bing Crosby as a dear friend and commented – “Bing had a brilliant mind and an original wit. That casual delivery combined with an unexpectedly wide vocabulary. It was a great device for comedy — and also an effective way of communicating with an audience or with a person.” Rosemary Clooney received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in February 2002 and sadly died of lung cancer four months later. I was a huge fan of her singing and I would have loved to have seen her perform onstage. Hope you can tune into Walter Williams and I on 4BC for our weekly segments The Time Tunnel - Thursday at 10.00 pm and Memories Are Made of This - Mondays at 10.00 pm. We can also be heard on the internet at www.4bc.com.au

AS computers age, they tend to get slower for a number of reasons. Firstly clean up your desktop. Your Random Access Memory (RAM) has a standard rate at which it runs depending on the passive programs you have open. These include the desktop icons it is constantly looking at and even the desktop image. While removing your desktop image may be going to the extreme, if you have a number of different program shortcuts, images and various other documents sitting on the desktop, it is worth deleting or storing them in a folder to help your computer process information faster. Next, scan your computer for viruses and adware. A leading cause of slowing your computer down would have to be viruses and adware. These infections monitor every process on your computer and cause further increases in the use of the computer’s RAM. It is important to keep an updated virus program on your computer at all times and to have a secondary adware removal program such as ad-aware or malwarebytes. Then remove programs you no longer use. The remove programs function found in your Con-

trol Panel is great for removing programs, as it shows you every single program installed on your computer and uninstalls them with the click of a button. The most difficult process which will increase the speed of your computer is to upgrade the drivers which were installed. Companies are constantly coming out with updates to the software which helps the hardware installed inside your box, run more effi-

ciently. The best way to do this is if you still have the boxes of the products, to write down the names and codes and visit the manufacturer’s website and go to the download system. Alternatively, you may need to open up your computer box and write down the manufacturer and model name, which is on every unit. It is important to know that you will not have to update anything for the RAM, as this does not come with software.
