Seniors learn to be tech-savvy

WHILST many seniors like to remain in their own homes and be independent, they can suffer social isolation. Brisbane Seniors Online (BSOL) can demonstrate how technology can keep people in touch with the outside world using Skype, VOIP, instant messaging as well as email. The interchange of photographs through the use of digital cameras to capture family images and transmit them by email to other family members and friends anywhere in the world is possible through computer technology and the Internet.

BSOL is a not for profit organisation that was established in 2001 which provides affordable computer training for over 50’s in their own home on their own computer using volunteer mentors.

With expansion in new technology, BSOL has found the need to diversify to outside the standard computer equipment. Training sessions on this equipment is carried out in some of the BSOL hubs or in the BSOL Central Training facility in the City.

Recently the Patron of BSOL and President of Older People Speak Out Val French AM was shown some of this new technology and how it can benefit seniors in their day to day lives.

President of BSOL Brenda Williams said that “One of the major barriers is fear. In training seniors to use the internet we often hear ‘I would never do Internet Banking. It’s too dangerous’. Education and safeguard guarantees would make these services more accessible to the more vulnerable members of our society. It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain information from government and community organisations without seeing the phrase “for more information go to www…”

LITTLE Paws Kitten Rescue is a charity with a mission to rescue homeless and surrendered cats and kittens and find loving secure homes for them. In 2011, over 717 cats and kittens were found homes by the dedicated group of volunteers from the local community.

We are also seeking active people who can volunteer their time to help support our seniors and their cats with our Long Term Companion Cat Program.

by Queensland University of Technology researcher Dr Sandra Haukka says “the key barriers preventing participants from using the Internet were lack of skills of how to use the Internet and confusion by the technology and concerns about security and viruses’. In BSOL’s experience, seniors helping seniors is a most effective medium. Most of these community groups struggle to keep up with current technology and resources to provide up to date training facilities’.

In respect to computer security, with the BSOL model of service delivery, mentors are able to work with the learner on their computers and help them to secure their computer. This provides the learner with added confidence when using the Internet as the lesson delivery utilises their own system.

Currently the need for more volunteer mentors as well as new learners varies across Brisbane.

However new learners as well as mentors are always welcome including Mac users.

OUR first bus trip for the year was to Lowood. We stopped for morning tea at Wivenhoe Dam from

there we went to visit the Bellevue Homestead which was most interesting and well displayed.

We could all relate to our younger days. Lunch was at Lowood Hotel which was very enjoyable. On

the 11th April at our club we are being entertained by a wonderful group, A Touch of Sparkle, so please come along and bring your friends. Our May bus trip will be to Benowa Botanical Gardens and then on to Tweed Heads Golf Club for lunch. A scrumptious smorgasbord. Leaving at 8am back at 4.30pm, cost $45. Fight Dementia campaign taken to the world AT the recent Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) conference, held in London, Glenn Rees, CEO of Alzheimer’s Australia spoke about Alzheimer’s organisations as agents of change.

“The challenges we face over the coming 10 years represent an opportunity for revolution in the role of Alzheimer’s organisations,” Mr Rees said.

Mr Rees said that over the last decade Alzheimer’s organisations have developed a strong evidence base of the social and economic impact of dementia and have begun to empower people with dementia to self advocate.

“Yet we still face two major challenges - negative social attitudes about dementia still persist and health policy has yet to embrace dementia and treats it as an unfortunate consequence of ageing.

“In 2005, Australia led the way when the then government funded the $320 million Dementia Initiative – making dementia a national health priority.

“Our confidence was shattered when Australia took a step backwards by terminating the Dementia Initiative in the 2010-11 Federal Budget.

“As a result Alzheimer’s Australia began the Fight Dementia Campaign which has put the stories of

people with dementia centre stage.”

The campaign is calling on the government to invest in a five year, $500 million Dementia Action Plan in the 2012-13 Federal Budget for awareness, early diagnosis, care and support, dementia risk reduction and investment in research.

“We must communicate the urgent need for action in health and aged care policy with greater sophistication, passion and assertiveness than we have ever done before.

“We need the world to know that dementia is not a natural part of ageing and that people can take steps to help reduce the risk of getting dementia.

“By being positive we will achieve a world which is much more dementia friendly and which recognises dementia as a major chronic disease that needs to be addressed through a public health framework.”

Alzheimer’s Australia is the charity for people with dementia and their families and carers. As the peak body, it provides advocacy, support services, education and information.

An estimated 267,000 people have dementia in Australia. This number is projected to double by 2030.

National Servicemen’s Assoc of Aust (Qld Branch) AT our recent AGM the standing committee was reelected, with Frank Nugent as President, Terry Hamilton VP, Dave Livett Secretary and Bert Girle as Treasurer. In the lead-up to Anzac Day local ex nashos will be outside Coles and Spotlight at Everton Park selling Anzac Day memorabilia in aid of the national Servicemen’s welfare fund. We sincerely thank each of the two retailers for once again allowing us to do this. On April 24 the branch’s press officer will address a group of ladies from the Newmarket View Club on the history of national Service in Australia.

On Anzac Day nashos will take part in parades throughout the state. Many nashos went on to serve in other units of the Defence Force.

Now in its 25th year, National Servicemen’s Association of Australia was formed for the benefit of nashos who served between 1951 and 1973 and the wives/

SENIORS NEWS Diet and exercise alone could slash cancer cases

ALMOST 43 000 cancers could be prevented in the year 2025 through dietary improvements and increases in physical activity alone, according to research published in the March 19 issue of the Medical Journal of Australia.

Associate Professor Peter Baade of the Viertel Centre for Research in Cancer Control, Cancer Council Queensland and co-authors sought to estimate the number of cancers that could be prevented by improvements in diet and physical activity.

Previous international research has estimated that 25% of cancers can be prevented through changes to diet and physical activity. Using current trends in popula-

tion growth and ageing, the researchers estimated that there would be about 170 000 cancer diagnoses in 2025 — a 60% increase on the 2007 annual figure.

They then applied the published estimates on the association between food, nutrition and physical activity in preventing cancer.

This reduction of 43 000 cancers would equate to savings of $674 million in 2025 alone (based on 20002001 treatment costs ignoring inflation), which highlighted the need for governments, doctors and researchers to act now to reduce the future burden of cancer, the authors wrote.

OUR bus trip on the 6th March 2012 was to the Telstra Museum at Albion. This was a very interesting place to visit.

Two gentlemen explained everything about the invention of electric light by Edison, Morse Code by Samuel Morse and the Morse Code machines which were developed to make receiving messages quicker and easier.

Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone and there were various telephones ranging from really old styles to current ones including various types of switchboards.

Marconi invented the wireless. There was a large range of equipment on display with some of the equipment being activated to show how they worked.

We then travelled to Arana Leagues Club for a very enjoyable lunch.

We travelled home after looking at the North pine Dam from Bullockies Rest as the other road was flooded. Our activities are Indoor Bowls, Monday and Friday mornings, Old Time/New Vogue Dance, Monday and Friday afternoons, concerts every second Wednesday, 500 Cards Tuesday and alternate Wednesday, Bingo Thursday morning and Saturday night.

Deer Farm at Samsonvale. While we are learning about the deer and feeding them our barbecue lunch is being prepared. Our afternoon stop is at Russell’s garden at Kallangur. Russell is our favourite horticulturist from Theo’s Nursery.

He always brings gorgeous plants and lots of good advice when he visits our club.

RAEME 104 Field Workshops Nashos.

THE Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (R.A.E.M.E.) raised CMF Formations, Units, Sub Units and Attached Tradesmen at the Bulimba Barracks after WW2. For over thirty years the CMF paraded at the Bulimba Barracks every Tuesday night.

The CMF has been slowly building up since 1948 but in 1951 it increased rapidly mainly because of the intake of National Servicemen. For the first time since they had been formed, units were able to conduct exercises with a complete or almost complete establishment.

During the years of service as a senior NCO I had extensive contact with these national servicemen and I hold a great deal of admiration for them. At 18 years of age I was conscripted to joining the military forces and probably understood the trauma in a young man’s life especially if it meant interfering with ones career.

oped natural leadership qualities and skills and many attained Commissions or were promotion to NCO level. Many enlisted in the Regular Army and proved to be a credit to themselves and the Corps of RAEME. Who can forget the heady years of 1967 and 1968 when these RAEMA Units and Sub Units were charged with the responsibility of the complete technical support at Shoalwater Bay, for exercises “Get Set” and “Bellbird”, in final preparation for Battalions going to Vietnam? The RAEME CMF stood tall and people noticed when they passed by. The Logistics Unit within the Bulimba Barracks has approved that the 104 Field Workshops & Lad’s Assn. Inc. hold a reunion on the 6th May 2012. As it is rumored the barracks may close in the near future the Committee extend an invitation to all National Servicemen who served at Bulimba. WITH a good attendance supporting the March meeting of the Rochedale/ Springwood National Seniors Branch members and guests were entertained to a very interesting presentation on personal safety and crime prevention by two excellent guest speakers.

Representing Logan City council was Ms Gina Zappia City Safe Officer whilst Senior Constable Julie Campbell repre-

sented the Logan District Crime Prevention Unit.

The two speakers conducted a well organised audio visual program covering all areas of interest to senior citizens including plans to make residents feel safer in their places of residence and also when out and about in their daily lives.

With very informative handouts distributed to all attending they left with a greater understand-

ing of personal safety and crime prevention.

Excursion for March included a well guided tour of Ipswich city highlights with lunch at the One Mile Hotel. There has been great care in preserving many early heritage homes and other buildings in the city.

Later in the year the branch has plans afoot to promote two extended guided tours.

Age discrimination: A waste of human resources

AGE Discrimination Commissioner, Susan Ryan, recently told a group of top human resource managers that they hold the key to stopping the waste of human resources that is age discrimination.

Speaking to the Australian Human Resources Institute HR Directors Networking Forum in Sydney, Commissioner Ryan said that the human resources industry was ideally placed to create a productive culture in relation to the millions of Australians who are kept out of work because they are considered “too old”.

“One out of three unemployed people aged between 55 and 64 are long-term unemployed and this longterm rate is more than double the rate for younger age groups,” Commissioner Ryan said. “In September 2009, the average number of weeks a 15-19 year old was unemployed for was 30.5 weeks, compared with 77.5 weeks for someone aged 55 years and over.”

She said there appeared to be a serious disjunction between raising the pension age to 67, the needs of the worker-starved economy and the persistence of age discrimination in employment.

“So many people want to work longer and need to work longer, but age discrimination is stopping them,” Commissioner Ryan said. “People who lose their jobs between the ages of 45 and 65 have huge difficulties finding another one and the stats show that many don’t.”

“Additionally, a structural lag that allows the continued application of age bars in areas that fall outside the protections of the Age Discrimination Act – such as in Workers compensation, Income protection insurance and the Superannuation Guarantee – are acting as a de facto retirement age, forcing people out of work on the basis of their age,” Commissioner Ryan

said. She said complaints to the Australian Human Rights Commission about age discrimination had recently risen by 44%, enquiries about age discrimination on the basis of being too old were up 78%, while Australian Bureau of Statistics data showed one in five over 55s seeking longer hours and 18% of unemployed over 45s claimed their main difficulty was that employers considered them “too old”.

Though there were several ‘future-focused’ and successful employers that were moving away from the old stereotypes, and the Australian Law Reform Commission was conducting an audit of laws and policies that act as barriers to economic participation of older people, Commissioner Ryan said a general shift in mindset still needed to take place.

“Since 1909 and the introduction of the age pension, we have not really adjusted our concept of old age in relation to work,” Commissioner Ryan said.”

With the dramatic demographic changes we have seen, and will see as many children today will live on into their 90s, we can no longer act in our employment practices as if most of us will be dead or useless by 65.”

On April 1 we have a guest speaking engagement with our fellow local historians at Nundah HS. Our research facility at Enoggera Memorial Hall opens each Thursday between 9.30 and 1pm, the first Saturday afternoon of each month between 14pm and at other times by arrangement. Thoroughly enjoying the relaxed and fun classes, Mr Kitson said that he also walks around the grounds of Brookfield Village with a friend, a few times a week to help his arthritis.

“My body doesn’t creak as much after doing the exercises and it really helps my hips. I’m not as stiff as I used to be and we also have a good laugh in the class,” Mr Kitson enthused.

Passionate about caring for people, diversional therapists at the Queensland Baptist Care centre let residents work at their own pace, as they take part in sitting and standing exercises.

Classes at the residential aged care centre are also finished off with a group quiz and a chat about topical issues, so that residents have the opportunity to exercise their bodies and brains.

Diversional therapist, Jenny Boettcher said: “The residents have varying levels of arthritis but improving their flexibility really helps them carry out everyday tasks such as getting dressed.

The exercise program, which is a combination of falls prevention exercises and those for helping ar-

thritis, was designed by our physio several years ago.

“When we first started doing exercises regularly, a ‘progress chart’ was done over a three month period and most of the residents had improved their range of movement and physical capabilities by the end of this time. All

Healthy eating on the menu at free workshops

THE campaign to promote healthy eating in schools has taken to the road with the start of a series of state-wide workshops.

Department of Education and Training Director-General Julie Grantham said the free Smart Choices workshops, which began in Mackay, would be held in 13 locations throughout the state over the next six months.

“The workshops will provide tips on how to ‘green’ tuckshop menus and market and promote healthy foods and drinks and create healthy menus for school and sporting events,” Mrs Grantham said.

“We are helping schools and their communities with the implementation of Smart Choices, the Healthy Food and Drink Supply Strategy for Queensland Schools.

“Through cooking demonstrations, recipe modification and menu ideas the workshops will provide useful, down-to-earth advice and some tasty tips on how to embed Smart Choices across the whole school environment.

“Tuckshop convenors and volunteers, P&C members, parents and other school community members with an appetite for new ideas are invited to attend.”

Mrs Grantham said the workshops were being presented by Education Queensland, in partnership with Nutrition Australia (Qld) and the Queensland Association of School Tuckshops.

“To enable as many people as possible to take advantage of the workshops there will be two sessions in each location. The afternoon session will run from 12.30pm until 4pm and an evening session from 6pm until 9pm.

“School tuckshops play an important role in promoting healthy eating as a way of maintaining good health,” Mrs Grantham said.

“The workshops will also help school tuckshops operate efficiently and provide all students with high quality, healthy food.”

Last year the Queensland Government appointed Chef, David Pugh, as the state’s Tuckshop champion and instigated the annual Tuckshop Day on the first Friday in November to recognise the contribution of tuckshops and their workers throughout the state.

OUR members continue to enjoy our monthly meetings and coach trips. Caloundra RSL was the destination for our first trip for the year. The staff made us most welcome with a nice morning tea, a delicious lunch and great entertainment. March coach trip will see us on a boat trip on the Brisbane River and enjoying a high tea followed by lunch at South Bank. Following lunch we will be going to Mt. Coot-tha Gardens and browsing through an antique shop on the way home. At our March meeting we were entertained by a guest speaker from Missing Persons Bureau who gave us a great insight into the wonderful achievements they make. The trading table did well with sales of knitted dolls, Easter eggs and plants.

Our BBQ will be held on Sunday 1st of April which will be well attended by our members and others who are welcome to attend.

Our Recipe Book has been very successful, we have now sold 295 and only have five left to sell at $5.

Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club Inc. AS published in last month’s edition, on 5th April the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club Inc. meets at the Enoggera Memorial Hall. The guest speaker is Bob Moore and he will talk about unusual plants.

At the following meeting of this club on Thursday, 3rd May, the topic of the Guest Speaker, Kath Stumer, is Bougainvilleas.

Gone are the days when you had to have a trellis of something for a Bougainvillea to grow on, and the thorny growth was a job to prune.

Now, even the smallest courtyard can accommodate a dwarf Bougainvillea such as the Bambino variety grown in a pot, as long as the position is sunny.

Other varieties such as ‘Maudi’ and ‘Arora’ are stunning ground covers when they spill down a bank or over a retaining wall. As well there’s a variegated leaf variety called ‘Bilas’ for something different.

The colour range in today’s Bougainvillea is magnificent from white through to apricots to all shades of reds bordering on purples. At the Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens in Brisbane there’s a beautiful Bougainvillea area along a roadway which is worth seeing.

The meeting commences at 9.45 am with morning tea, and visitors and new members are most welcome .The club meets at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, 349 Wardell Street, Enoggera (Refidex 139 A10), corner of Wardell and Trundle Streets. The hall is wheel chair friendly and close to public transport.

Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month. It is not necessary to be a gardener to join this club. Those members who do garden, exhibit specimens for judging and any new member who wants to exhibit should phone Pat, the president, about the entry classes on the schedule. Qualified judges and guest speakers are engaged each month and while the speakers’ topics, in the main, focus on horticulture, some speakers deal with well-being, health, craft, floral art, etc. and much knowledge and good fellowship are to be gained from attending these talks.

Simply irresistible

IT has been the subject of movies, books and music and described as the ultimate sign of love. But why is chocolate so irresistible to certain people and not others?

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) PhD researcher Stephanie Fay from the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI) is looking for participants to help her solve this ageold question.

Ms Fay said her study would examine the way that different people perceive the taste of sweet foods such as chocolate, using questionnaires and skin conductance tests.

“We will be asking the participants to watch short videos as well as completing small tasks and answering an electronic questionnaire,” Ms Fay said.

“We will be looking in particular to see if different personality types perceive things such as taste differently.”

Ms Fay said subtle changes in the body would also be monitored to see the ef-

fect the sweet treat has on different people. “Psychological arousal can be spotted in things like slight perspiration of the palms and very slight changes in the skin’s moisture,” Ms Fay said. “Chocolate is obviously quite an emotive food and can have an effect on people that other foods don’t.

“For some people it’s a first line of support when things go wrong.”

Ms Fay said she was hoping the study would eventually contribute to wider research about food preferences, eating behaviours and weight management.

“Aside from being tasty, chocolate is also very widely available,” she said.

“It’s often the first thing you see when you walk into some shops.

“We want to be able to understand why some people can walk straight past those displays and other people can’t.”

building and electrical skills for 12 months before actually going onto major building sites. “One of the most rewarding moments of my career was being able to employ a profoundly deaf lad as a carpenter,” he recalls.

“This was a first for major building sites anywhere in Australia so it was a great milestone.

SENIORS NEWS Older, single women at financial risk OLDER single women on low incomes and in poor health have borne the major brunt of the recent global financial crisis (GFC) in Australia, according to new research released by National Se-

niors Australia. The results of a recent survey, conducted by the National Seniors Productive Ageing Centre, showed that 40 per cent of participants considered themselves to be

“worse off” after the onset of the GFC in late 2007, despite Australia weathering the financial storm better than most other countries.

Of those living alone, a total of 45 per cent of

women reported being negatively affected by the GFC, compared to 38 per cent of men.

Around half the employed baby boomers surveyed, who had not yet retired, said they had

been affected by the GFC and therefore needed to delay their retirement because they did not have enough money to give up working.

The aim of the report, Ageing Baby Boomers in Australia: Understanding the effects of the global financial crisis, was to examine the effects of the GFC in order to better inform positive action for protecting baby boomers’ well-being in retirement.

Why do we have a Leap Year?

2012 is a leap year, with 366 days instead of the usual 365 days. It was the ancient Egyptians who first worked out that the solar year and the man-made calendar year didn’t always match up.

That’s because it actually takes the Earth a little longer than a year to travel around the Sun — 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds, to be exact.

Therefore, as the hours accumulated over the centuries, an extra day was occasionally added to the calendar, and over time the practice became more or less official. The Romans first designated February 29 as leap day, but a more precise formula (still in use today) was adopted in the 16th century when the Gregorian calendar fine-tuned the calculations to include a leap day in years only divisible by four - 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024, etc.

The GFC also impacted upon baby boomers’ life satisfaction, retirement optimism and expectations of health care.

“Whether their retirement will be as good as expected will depend, in part, on the health care they are afforded by future governments.

The Benevolent Society’s general manager for ageing, Barbara Squires, said the National Seniors survey results come as no surprise.

“It’s well known that women enter retirement with less superannuation than men,” Ms Squires said.

“The most severely affected are women who were in and out of the workforce raising children, often working part time and who then separate from their partners.

THE Art of storytelling in the digital age will reignite the life journeys of Zion Lutheran Home residents by empowering them to share their life experiences and achievements online. Zion Lutheran Home Lifestyle Coordinator Neal Price recently received a $5,000 grant from the Australia Council for the Arts, Community Partnerships to create a digital storytelling project.

His brief was to develop a partnership between Zion Lutheran Home and Brisbane-based Feral Arts bringing more than 20 residents and their rela-

tives together in a workshop to teach them how to use a multi-media storytelling platform.The Feral Arts facilitators will bring the residents’ memories to life in a digital storytelling presentation this month.Attendees will learn how to upload their stories making them accessible across rural Queensland, further afield to Australian Communities or other countries by publishing text, photographs, audio and video to the interactive website.

Interest program will become a valuable community resource to share Zion Lutheran Home’s aspirations, culture and residents’ life stories as well as the history of the Nundah area. Zion Lutheran Home General Manager Maria Mulheran said the benefit of digital stories is that they capture an iconic image of a resident’s life.

“The digital stories celebrate the person’s milestones, achievements, successes and remind us that each person has a story to be told,” she said.

“It is also a wonderful way for residents to share their stories and to connect with others.” Mr Price said the idea of online storytelling published from home has come into the spotlight as the new social medium and a communication tool. “It is easily accessible and using film and video is now more userfriendly,” he said.

“With the emergence of new technologies, digital storytelling is a way people can document both personal and local histories and make them available to a wider public. “There’s increasing interest in creative ageing

and using technology in the aged care sector.”

Mr Price said residents could tell stories about important life events.

“They can impart experiences encountered during World War II, stories of immigration, of survival and from that we will understand Zion community is a rich culture of people and events,” he said.

“This gives us a better understanding of who our community is made up of, their strengths and aspirations. “If you can use email you can make a digital story.” Mr Price said there were privacy settings in the software to enable storytellers to control who can access their stories. The technology has enabled resident and sailor Don Thompson, who claimed fourth place at the Brisbane to Gladstone boat race in 1982, communicate with the world around him.

“We like people to appreciate the stories behind our lives,” Don said.

“It means a lot to us.”Mr Price said resident Mary Black, 101, also remembers when World War I was announced. “All that history resides within these walls just waiting to be told,” he said. In 2003,

Mr Price was honoured with the Australia Council’s Roz Bower Award for his contribution to the disability,

health and community sectors.

After completing a fellowship in London in 2008 focusing on reminiscent

Activities for kids on the day will include face painting and craft. Come dressed as a frog and you could even win a prize.

There will also be a live frog display, a talk on how to establish a frog pond in your own backyard and a sausage sizzle.

Australians deserve to age well IF you’ve ever tried to access aged care services for yourself or your family you’ll know the system can be a minefield.

It’s hard to know where to start, it’s inconsistent and very complicated. Inhome support services are extremely limited and residential care based on arbitrary ratios not demand.

Yet we know our population is ageing.

By 2050 over 3.5 million Australians are expected to use aged care services each year. This is more than a threefold increase on a system that is already buckling under pressure today.

How will we afford it? How can we fix the system today so it can provide all of us with the choice, quality and dig-

nity we deserve as we age?

In 2011 the independent Productivity Commission released the Caring for Older Australians report recommending comprehensive reform of the aged care sector. The suggested changes would result in a much more people-centred system with more choice which is fairer for everyone across the country.

Neither the Gillard Government nor the Opposition have officially responded to the report or committed to its recommendations.

The age well campaign is driven by an alliance of organisations in the aged care sector who recognise the urgent need for reform.

It all revolves around websites, so access to a computer with Internet connection is essential. A search of “home exchange” or “house exchange” will return many sites and you have to decide which one to use.

Some of the more popular include: www.home exchange.com, www. homeforexchange.com, www. aussiehouseswap. com.au, www.homeswap holidays.com, www.home link.com.au. There is at least one site intended for the older members of society: www.seniorshome exchange.com.

Which one you choose depends on a number of factors. If you know what specific country you want to visit, you can go to a website and check out how many listings they have for that country – the number varies considerably between sites. Anybody can visit a site and look at the offerings without being a member. You only have to subscribe to a site when you want to contact a prospective swapper.

The information provided within sites varies too.

They usually tell you how big the property is, what its facilities are, and something about the people including their age bracket. We will only swap with our own age group and will not accept children or smokers – those kinds of choices are up to you. The cost of

membership varies widely.

Some sites cost over $100 a year, but others cost only around $60 a year with some offering discounts for a three year membership. There is often a guarantee – if you don’t manage to organize a swap in the year, then you get another year for free. With the growing popularity of this kind of holiday, the competition is increasing and, anyway, you recoup the cost in the first day or so of a swap.

Once you have signed up with a particular site, you have to list your property.

It is most beneficial if you provide as much information as possible and make it sound fantastic. You have to sell the idea of a holiday in your house.

Photos are essential, not just of the house and interior, but also of the at-

tractions in your area. Try to be as chatty as possible, and try to be friendly in how you present information about yourself.

Now you can start sending emails to possible swappers. Most listings state where the people want to go. We ignore this and send emails to anybody in the chosen area – often 50 or more.

One problem you may encounter is that Europeans are reluctant to travel all the way to Australia – you would think it was on another planet! So you have to make it sound and look really good. Keep a record of who you contact as you may need this later if you send out more emails.

Once you get a possible hit, you then start negotiating on dates and specifics like looking after pets. Over a period of months you get to know the person and may even be able to talk to them on Skype. You build up a rapport and get a feel of what they are like. If there is anything you are not sure of, it is best to bring it out in the open and discuss it rather than leave it to chance. Sometimes, due to travel arrangements, you may not meet the

people whose house you live in. We have always managed to meet them and it is good to talk face to face. It is great to have some local contacts, especially in a foreign country. So try to arrange some friends or neighbours to visit and be on call if problems arise.

We have developed a “house manual” detailing every aspect of how our property works. This is most beneficial when small issues come up. It is surprising how our houses differ from those overseas – small things like where is the mains electrical switch, who to call in an emergency, how to operate the TV and what kind of fuel the car uses. Check with your insurers about others driving your car and living in your house – most do not care who it is as long as they are over 25. You can lock up any belongings you want secured. Some people even put locks on one room. The whole swap is based on trust and we have never had any problems.

So the whole world is out there, just waiting to be explored. What are you waiting for? Get on the computer and go for it!

SENIORS NEWS The Chermside Probus Club IN March, 40 members travelled to Stanthorpe for three days to celebrate the Apple and Grape festival.

A range of activities had been organised for our members including wine, cider and cheese tasting and a visit to the Transport Museum at Gatton. But the highlight of the trip was of course the Apple and Grape Festival parade in Stanthorpe. Some members mentioned they had partaken of too much fine food which had affected their waistlines – a nice problem.

Probus is an association for active retirees who join together in various clubs, which provide regular opportunities to expand their interests and enjoy the fellowship of new friends. Our Club has monthly day trips and a wide variety of other activities including movie/theatre outings and monthly dining. And each month a guest speaker is organized to address the members on a range of topics.

Money worries for ageing Australians

MONEY worries are the top concern when it comes to growing older, finds a new survey. National Seniors Australia surveyed 1,800 members and found their biggest concern about getting older was the value of their savings and investments not keeping up with inflation. This was followed by being unable to receive proper care when they are no longer able to look after themselves and thirdly by not being able to maintain a reasonable standard of living for their rest of their lives.

National Seniors Australia chief executive Michael O’Neill said the findings were important for the government to acknowledge as it considers the Productivity Commission’s (PC) final report, Caring for Older Australians.

“We want to make sure that those who cannot afford aged care are properly looked after because we don’t believe money should be the criteria for receiving quality care,’’ O’Neill said.

The report aimed to gauge National Seniors’ members views on reform proposals in the PC report as well as survey people’s concerns about growing older.

Almost half of all respondents (47%) had made no preparations for getting older, hadn’t thought about it or didn’t want to think about it.

The respondents’ top three priorities for aged care reform were to address workforce shortages in aged care (24%), improve the quality of life for aged care residents (21%) and increase the number of residential care places (17%).

Other key findings included: A significant majority (70%) rejected the inclusion of the family home in a comprehensive aged care means test.

Just over half of those polled (52%) rejected reverse mortgages.

Only 26% of respondents reported that their current home is suitable to live in, without modification, when they reach their 80s and 90s.

Respondents identified a range of other concerns about getting older including: loss of independence, quality of life and dignity; loss of driver’s licence; poor health; whether their children would be there to help as well as loneliness and social isolation.

50th Anniversary Neil T Fallon celebrates 50 years in Business Neil Fallon established the electrical contracting arm of Fallon Services in 1962 at the age of 21.

Over the decades, an excellent reputation was earned for electrical services as well as appliance repairs and data cabling.

Television, two way, commercial reception and transmission services also became specialties. Neil separated the television and communication work and founded Brisbane Aerial Services, which grew to become a leader in South East Queensland in the areas of TV and radio transmission and reception, mast and tower installations for TV and radio aerials, Pay TV installation and construction for TV stations in poor reception areas. He sold Brisbane Aerial Services in 2000 to Comet.

Neil sold the electrical business on his 65th birthday in April 2005 to the current owners. Neil has now retired and is enjoying golfing, boating and being a grandparent.

When the current owners were asked why they decided to buy the business, they explained that Fallon’s ticked all the boxes.

Prior to purchasing Fallon’s, the Managing Director Mark Denning was the General Manager of a division of a publicly listed company with 3000 staff, was constantly travelling and never home.

Mark decided that he wanted to be home more with his young family so spent six months searching for a local business to buy. The business had a good reputation. It had been around for a long time. Mark remembered seeing the vans driving around West End during his days at Brisbane State High School, and after that while training at Commercial Rowing Club in West End. That was the 1980’s, and Neil had moved to Montague Road from Yeronga. Another reason Mark decided to buy Fallon’s was the company’s focus on maintenance. Even though Fallons complete select construction projects, the majority of the work is in service and maintenance. This provides the company with a constant flow of work to diversified clientele, and avoids most of the boom and bust seen in the building industry. 76% of Fallon’s work comes from repeat business and referrals. This has also allowed a different, more collaborative culture to develop in the company. Working in the construction industry can be quite a stressful and adversarial environment and Fallon’s prefer to work in partnership with our clients to bring solutions to their problems.

Some of the exciting projects completed in recent years include: • The largest single flood-lighting installation in Aus-

tralia, at Corbould Park Racecourse at Caloundra in 2009; • Retrofitting 3,000 toilets and 17,000 water flow restrictors at Brisbane Schools and Shopping Centres during the drought; • Repairing the lighting and electrical fittings on six Brisbane Ferry Terminals after the 2011 floods.

It hasn’t been all easy. Around 2008, the company suffered an employment crisis – too much work and no ability to recruit sufficient qualified staff –

and after that the GFC, which made them rethink their strategy and invest heavily in improving service, training and systems. In 2011, the company traded from Mark’s lounge room with only one phone line, due to the floods in West End. Fallon’s have seen lots of competitors close their doors over the last 12 months, but in the same time they booked a record 21,500 jobs.

Neil Fallon’s original focus on service and reliability established in the 1960s still works today.

National Boer War Day to Commemorate the Signing of the Peace Treaty

ON 31st May 2012 a Commemoration Ceremony will be conducted in ANZAC Square Brisbane, at the base of the Boer War Memorial, to commemorate the signing of the Peace Treaty in Melrose House Pretoria in 1902. This year our guest of honour will be Her Excellency The Governor of Queensland. The day will be supported by the 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment (QMI) and the Australian Army Band Brisbane. There will be similar ceremonies all over Australia.

We all realize that the annual commemoration of Boer War Day must be continued, particularly during this year, the

110th anniversary of the signing of the peace treaty.

Over 55s most discouraged from finding work NEW figures released yesterday paint a picture of Australia’s most discouraged jobseekers, and not surprisingly it’s the over 55s who face the most trouble when it comes to finding work.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ report, Persons Not in the Labour Force, Australia, showed that in September 2011, of the 900,000 people who were not in the labour force but who wanted to work and were available to start within four weeks, there were 90,700 discouraged job seekers of which over half (56 per cent) were aged 55 and over.

These discouraged job seekers reported that their main reason for giving up looking for work was that they were ‘considered too old by employers’ (36 per cent). This was followed by ‘lacked necessary skills, training or experience’ (16 per cent).

National Seniors Australia chief executive Michael O’Neill said the report convincingly showed that older workers were the most marginalised group of people looking for work.

“This shows that a significant number of older Aus-

tralians are wanting to stay attached to the workforce, but are being shown the door time and time again,’’ he said.

“Australian society can no longer ignore that older workers are facing discrimination based on their age.

“Furthermore, almost a third (32 per cent) of those discouraged job seekers were aged 65 and over, and in fact, 18 per cent were aged 70+. And the reason for this is crystal clear: they believe that employers considered them to be too old.”

The ABS reports a total of almost 6 million people, or a third (33 per cent) of all Australians aged 15 years or over, were not in the labour force.

A 2011 report by National Seniors Australia entitled Stereotype Threat and Mature Age Workers called for more positive older role models, stronger antidiscrimination policies, increased training opportunities and greater recognition of mature age staff.

National Seniors Australia is continuing to lead research into age discrimination and the retention of older workers in the Australian workforce.

Brisbane Rotary Art Spectacular SOME of Queensland’s leading and emerging artists have pooled their talents for this year’s Rotary Art Spectacular, which will also raise vital funds for the Cerebral Palsy League who support thousands of children and adults with disabilities across the state.

THE Mystery BusTour is a mystery no more. We travelled to Beerburrum to Teamsters Australia - Cobb & Co.on the Old Gympie Road. On arrival we were greeted by Steve Ralph (the Cobb & Co. man) and enjoyed freshly baked Damper with syrup supplied and, of course, tea or coffee. Steve is quite an historian on anything to do with Cobb & Co. and enlightened us with many a tale. The site he occupies was a staging post where the horses were changed over to enable the coach to travel on towards Gympie.

When lunch time came around he served a great two course lunch and I can tell you tea and toast for the evening meal would be all most of us would be able to manage. All in all a very interesting and informative day.

April 10th is our next day out. We will board the “Mirimar” at South Bank for a cruise up the Brisbane River. Morning Tea and a two course Lunch are included today. The bus will leave our Hall, cnr Fleurs and Clifton Streets, Annerley at 8.30 a.m. Come along as we are sure this will be a nostalgic trip for quite a few of us.

THE 2012 National Trust Queensland Heritage Festival will expand to include a month-long program of events celebrating our history and cultural heritage.

The national theme for the 2012 Festival is Amazing Stories: Innovation and Invention. The 2012 Festival will run from 18 April, the key day of the Australian Heritage Week and the ICOMOS International Day for Monuments and Sites to 18 May, which is ICOM International Museum Day. The Launch of the Queensland Heritage Festival will be held at the Heritage Festival Gala Dinner at the Queensland Rugby Club, Rugby Quay, Brisbane on Wednesday evening the 18 April. This is a fundraising dinner with vitals funds being raised for important National Trust work.

Creative Generation Art Works on show in Brisbane.

AN exhibition featuring art works by Queensland’s finest senior school artists is on display at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art. Department of Education and Training Director-General Julie Grantham said the Creative Generation Awards Visual Art and Design 2012-2013 Touring Exhibition featured works from 33 senior students from Queensland state and non-state schools. “Now in its 22nd year, the awards continue to recognise, celebrate and honour student artists in Queensland’s schools,” Mrs Grantham said.

“A total of 473 submissions were received and 33

winners were chosen with their works now being displayed at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA).

“The works will be on public display at GoMA until 3 June 2012, and then the exhibition will go on tour to nine regional galleries across Queensland.

“We encourage visitors of all ages to actively participate in our exhibitions and programs and we’re proud to host this exhibition showcasing the work of Queensland’s secondary students.

“We wish them well as they continue their creative journeys.”

The Grange NSA

THE Grange NSA celebrated their 22nd birthday on 13th February and it was pleasing that 5 inaugural members were in attendance. In February 1990 Fred Miller was instrumental in calling a meeting for the formation of a NSA branch at The Grange. Members attended meetings at venues at the Grange until moving to the Stafford Bowls Club for easier access.

There have been many changes over the years and

the branch is still well attended, we have interesting guest speakers and members enjoy a lunch and dinner group on alternate months.

Public system delays diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer

RESEARCH has found differences in waiting times for diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer between the public and private health systems, with public health patients likely to wait longer than private patients.

The study by Cancer Council Queensland is the first of its kind to demonstrate the link between delayed diagnosis and treatment for prostate cancer and the Queensland health service system.

Lead researcher, Associate Professor Peter Baade, said targeted strategies were needed to address the inequity.

“The results of our study show that there are systematic differences in men’s prostate cancer management, both for diagnosis and treatment,” he said.

“These differences are predominately related to access to private hospital care, suggesting that there are inequities in health-care service provision that are system

based.

“Without acknowledgment and targeted strategies, these inequities are likely to persist and widen as health-care budgets tighten and prostate cancer incidence increases, and indeed there is ecological evidence that this is occurring.

“It is hoped that the results of this study will increase the motivation of Government and health care planners to act.”

The study found men without private health insurance were twice as

likely to wait more than 70 days for a definitive diagnosis and nearly three times as likely to wait more than 70 days between diagnosis and treatment.

“While the clinical implications of delay to diagnosis and treatment for prostate cancer are unclear, longer time intervals before and after diagnosis mean greater uncertainty and accompanying anxiety,” A/Prof Baade said.

“With its high and increasing incidence and

substantial treatment burden, the management of prostate cancer is a critical issue.”

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Queensland men.

“Importantly, the findings suggest that greater funding and resources is urgently required to improve clinical care for men with prostate cancer by ensuring men receive better education and decision support about diagnosis and treatment at the primary care level.”

EU approves new skin cancer drug SWISS drug giant Roche says it has been given European Union approval for its treatment to fight a highly aggressive form of skin cancer.

The European Commission gave the green light to Zelboraf, a drug used to treat adults with BRAF V600 mutation-positive unresectable or metastatic melanoma, the company said in a statement on Monday.

If diagnosed early, melanoma is generally curable.

When it spreads to other parts of the body it is the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Currently only one in four people lives for more than a year following diagnosis.

US health authorities approved Zelboraf in August last year, with Roche describing initial sales as “very encouraging”.

The treatment, already approved by Switzerland, Brazil and Canada among others, has “revolutionised melanoma treatment,” said analysts at the Zurich Cantonal Bank (ZKB).

Roche said the drug allows people to live significantly longer, with trials showing the risk of death was reduced by 63 per cent for people who received Zelboraf compared with those who received standard first-line treatment.

Brookfield resident celebrates 101st birthday

Phyllis Norcott

LOTS of hard work and staying away from fastfood are the ingredients for a long life according to a woman celebrating her 101 st birthday at Brookfield Village Care Centre this week. Born in 1911, a year before the sinking of the Titanic, Phyllis Norcott lived through two world wars and still manages to walk unaided. Having moved

over to Australia with her husband when she was in her 60’s to be nearer her daughter, Mrs Norcott ended up outliving her.

And out of her four children, only one is still alive in England.

Brought up at a time when there was no fast-food take-aways, Phyllis said that she worked hard all her life and didn’t need to exercise because the work

kept her fit. “Plain homemade meals” also helped and the centenarian added that there’s no food she doesn’t like because she was raised to eat whatever she got. “I laugh when people ask me are there any foods I don’t like. You had what you were given in those days and you often went hungry. So there’s no food that I wouldn’t eat. I had

a lovely childhood growing up in Bristol though, out in the fields all day playing during the summer holidays. There was no messing about and it was a simpler time. But I worked hard all my life, in canteens and hotels and in an aircraft factory during the war,” she said.

But although plain healthy food may have contributed to her long life, Phyllis still gets excited reminiscing over the delicious roly-poly pudding with dates that her mother used to make for her as a special treat when she was a child.

Originally from Bristol in England, Phyllis married Henry, who worked as a head porter in a hotel in 1932. After outliving her husband and seven siblings, Phyllis’s remaining family members include one son, four grandchildren, lots of great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. USING the Internet to find health and medical information can help you make more informed decisions about your health care, but it is not a substitute for seeing a registered medical doctor (GP). Although some health information available on the Internet can be valuable, you need to be aware of the risks because medical misinformation or ‘cyberquackery’ is rife on the Internet.

Federal parliament passed the changes to the community pharmacy agreement legislation recently. The new rules are due to come into effect from July.

Another change to the community pharmacy agreement passed by the Senate makes it easier for drugs to be dispensed in nursing homes.

It will allow drugs to be distributed as per a doctor’s instructions on a resident’s bedside medication chart rather than GPs having to write a separate prescription.

Vaccination encouraged ahead of ‘flu season QUEENSLAND Health is encouraging people to get immunised before this year’s ‘flu season begins.

More than 140 cases of influenza have been recorded since January, which is lower than the average number of notifications.

But the State’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said that was no reason to become complacent about guarding against the virus.

“Influenza is a highly contagious and potentially serious disease that can be spread through coughing and sneezing,” Dr Young said.

“It’s especially important for people in ‘at risk’ groups to be vaccinated which is why Queensland Health provides free ‘flu immunisation for the elderly, pregnant women, Indigenous people aged over 15 and those at risk due to medical conditions such as heart and respiratory diseases. “As is the case every year, this year’s vaccine is based on

the virus strains circulating in the northern hemisphere including the influenza A H3N2 strain, influenza A H1N1 and an influenza B strain.

“This reliable and safe vaccine is available to prevent people getting the ‘flu.”

Anyone over the age of six months who is not severely allergic to vaccine ingredients can be immunised.

“Annual vaccination against influenza reduces the chances of catching the ‘flu and the severity of it if you do contract it,” Dr Young said.

Vaccination is available through GPs, Aboriginal medical services and other immunisation providers.

Prostate problems – a thing of the past?

ONE in 3 men over 50 have benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) commonly known as an enlarged prostate; this number rises to nearly 80% of men when they reach 70. While BPH is not fatal like prostate cancer, it can cause a lot of pain and inconvenience. Common symptoms are frequent and painful urination, and for some cases sexual performance is affected, yet so few men talk openly about it.

For those who have approached their doctors for advice, more often than not, an effective treatment is quickly and conveniently made available. Surgery is usually the last resort due to the unpleasant nature of the side-effects such as incontinence and impotence. Government’s partial restoration of mental health services disappointing THE Australian Medical Association has welcomed the Government’s acknowledgement that Budget cuts to mental health services are hurting patients but says its decision not to reverse cuts to Medicare funding for GP mental health services is disappointing.

AMA President, Dr Steve Hambleton, said recently that the Government has failed to address the fact that the Budget cuts to Medicare rebates for general practice mental health services are having a detrimental impact on patients.

“Medicare data shows that since the Government cut Medicare rebates for GP mental health services, the number of GP mental health care plans has dropped by over six per cent compared to the same period in the year before,” Dr Steve Hambleton said.

“This decline is a direct result of the $400 million cut in the May Budget from these key mental health services.

“It is clear that the cuts have made it harder for patients with mental illness to access high quality GP care, and this is having a heavy impact on one the most vulnerable groups in society.

Across the Andes by boat THE Andes comprise the longest chain of mountains in the world.

Stretching for 8000 kilometres, they form the backbone of South America and rise to heights of over 6000 metres. Crossing this formidable range by any means is an achievement, crossing by boat is a rather ridiculous concept.

In the Patagonia region of Chile is a series of lakes that provide a spectacular “highway” over the mountains into Argentina. This route has been in use for over 400 years, initially by the natives of southern Chile and later

by Jesuits who founded missions in the area. The whole region is peppered by glistening snowcapped volcanic peaks.

Most tourists fly into Puerto Montt and stay at Puerto Varas on Lake Llanquihue. Private vehicles are not allowed on the lakes crossing so one must join a tour group.

The first leg of 76 kilometres is by bus, and skirts the edge of the lake before affording stunning views of the volcanic cone of Mount Osorno with snow on its flanks.

The route enters the first of the national parks, Vicente Perez Rosales, and the ascent begins, gradually at first. The bus stops for a break and there is time to take a short walk to a series of rapids and waterfalls in the unspoilt wilderness.

Then it is time to board the catamaran to cross Lake Todos Los Santos

(All the Saints in Spanish). Surrounded by untouched forest, this lake stretches for over 40 kilometres and is fed by melt water from the numerous peaks. The air is decidedly chilly but it is a clear and fine day so we count ourselves lucky.

The weather in this part of Patagonia is extremely changeable and fog often obscures the natural beauty. Isolated houses are dotted amongst the millions of pine trees, their only access by boat.

After about one hour and 40 minutes the vessel berths at the tiny town of Peulla. Many travellers spend a night here at the magnificent Hotel Natura Patagonia in the national park. This four-star facility features local timber in its furnishings and décor.

fox through the trees high above the forest floor, or a ride on a purpose-built four-wheel-drive, or horse riding and trekking.

Continuing by bus, the road climbs via a narrow twisting pass, reaching 1000 metres at the border crossing into Argentina.

The nearby volcanic peak of Mount Tronador dominates the skyline with its dazzling white snow. The Argentine Customs have an outpost on the banks of Lake Frias (meaning Lake Cold in Spanish).

Dwarfed by the surrounding mountains, this lake is like a picture postcard with its mirror-like water reflecting a multitude of colours. A pair of semitame foxes forages for scraps amongst the buildings. Photography is virtually compulsory.

The journey on the lake is only about eight kilometres and another bus awaits for the short hop to Puerto Blest on Lake Nahuel Huapi. This is true virgin wilderness,

with only an occasional bird call disturbing the silence. Steep mountains rise sheer from the placid water. Numerous cascades thread the sides of the rock faces. The air temperature is icy. The final water leg of the crossing takes just over an hour on the high-speed catamaran, berthing at Puerto Panuelo.

This lake is a mecca for holiday-makers all year round. In summer it is a popular sailing and trekking venue while in winter it attracts snow skiers.

The nearby city of Bariloche is a busy tourist centre. It has numerous cypress pine buildings in the Alpine style and offers lots of accommodation and restaurants. It has an international airport connecting to many destinations.

While the whole of South America has many fantastic attractions, the Andean lakes crossing ranks as one of the highlights.

HOLIDAY & Leisure Ipswich Festival set for a giant street parade in May THE Ipswich Festival, one of the biggest festivals of its type in regional Australia, celebrates 12 days of free family entertainment.

It’s a fantastic program with a parade and major street party, live bands, concerts, art exhibitions, theatre, jazz, blues, multicultural celebrations, and a huge program of children’s entertainment.

This year the Ipswich Festival street parade received a major boost from a free 10 week giant puppet making workshop being held in the Ipswich Mall from February 23 until April 21.

Ipswich Events Corporation Executive Chairman Paul Casos said the festival was always looking for new and creative ideas to keep family favourites

like the street parade a must-see event.

“We are very excited about the new dimension puppet making workshops will give the parade to be held on May 5, the second weekend of the festival. The parade theme this year is ‘Tales of Discarded Treasure’.”

Mr Casos said that due to two election dates, some key events within the festival had been moved; however the festival dates remain unchanged.

The Ipswich Festival will run from April 25 to May 6 as planned.

The Street Parade, Carnival Capers, and Top of Town Street Party will now be held on May 5.

Train trips for all tastes THE Australian Railway Historical Society (Queensland Division) has entered its 55th year of operating rail tours.

Over 940 excursions operated by both steam and diesel hauled trains to many destinations in Queensland have been run by the Society since 1957, of course the steam hauled tours are very popular and give passengers a nostalgic tour in travel of a bygone era – travelling in style in the heritage carriages.

The excitement of a day out by steam train commences at Roma St as you go walk along the platform to find your carriage with a reserved seat. It is then a quick walk to the head of the train to inspect the great “Iron Horse” which is simmering away quietly waiting for the grand departure.

Final boarding announcements are made , the guard blows his whistle and waves the green flag and the engine bursts into life with it’s whistle blowing to signal departure and steams out of the platform heading for the day’ destination.

The annual Rail and Sail to Redcliffe is on Saturday 12th May. Travel by launch from Southbank to Redcliffe and return by steam train from Sandgate. Slam the phone on scammers

MOBILE phones and internet phone services have vastly improved people’s ability to communicate, but they also provide a cheap and easy way for scammers to make contact.

Fair Trading Executive Director Brian Bauer said National Consumer Fraud Week (19–25 March 2012) was a good time for Queenslanders to stop and think about the security of their personal in-

formation. “The theme of Fraud Week this year was ‘Slam scams!’ and encourages consumers to stop the contact at the point of delivery so that scammers don’t even have a chance to engage”, Mr Bauer said. “The message is simple - press delete, throw it out, shut the door or just hang up.”

This advice comes as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s 2011 Scam

Activity Report, released recently, suggests that landlines and mobile phones will be the number one way that scammers will contact consumers this year.

“If you get a call from someone you don’t know offering you a product or service, wanting your personal details, or telling you something that sounds too good to be true, just hang up,” Mr Bauer said.

I KNEW there was a reason behind this saying, a professor at CCNY said the expression comes from the effect bananas have on the brain among other things. They contain three natural sugars - 2 bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90 minute workout.

Book launch - Agnews Clothing Factory LADIES who formerly worked at the Agnew’s Clothing Factory in Clontarf, will be interested to know that a book has been published about this iconic business, which was one of the largest employers on the Redcliffe Peninsula at that time .

The Agnew Family set up the factory, producing beautiful hand-embroidered children’s clothing, in 1945 and it ran successfully until 1983. Hundreds of ladies gained employment and learned various sewing skills, as well as making life-long friendships .

Many former employees were interviewed by the Redcliffe Historical Society, who have published the book “The Agnew Legacy” as part of Heritage Week in May. Anyone interested in this well-known employer, will

be very welcome to attend the book launch and display of Agnew’s clothing.

The display goes from 10am until 3pm. The book

launch, by Rhonda White, will be held at 10am, followed by a morning tea.

IN yet another sign of the growing dominance of the digital publishing market, the oldest English-language encyclopedia still in print is moving solely into the digital age.

Encyclopaedia Britannica, which has been in continuous print since it was first published in Scotland in 1768 will soon end publication of its printed editions and continue with versions available online. Does Vinegar Kill Mould?

AFTER a bout of wet weather mould will start to appear. There are other things than expensive products that you can use.

Vinegar is a mild acid which can kill 82% of mould species. However it also has the advantages of being natural and safe. Vinegar is non-toxic and doesn’t give off dangerous fumes like bleach does.

To kill mould with vinegar, use white distilled vinegar which you can buy cheaply from the supermarket.

Pour some vinegar into a spray bottle without watering it down and spray the vinegar onto the mouldy

surface and leave it to sit for an hour.

Wipe clean the area with water and allow the surface to dry. Any smell from the vinegar should clear within a few hours.

If you want to use vinegar to prevent mould growing on surfaces just spray vinegar on the surface and leave it. Repeat this every few days to ensure the surface will stay mould-free. You can even mop your tiled bathroom floor or other hard non-porous floors with vinegar if you are worried about mould growing on them.

QLD Pops Orchestra in full swing!

JOINED by world-class performers, the Queensland Pops Orchestra will perform genres ranging from jazz and classical to musical theatre and country in their excitement-filled 2012 season at Queensland Performing Arts Centre. The Queensland Pops 2012 season started with a bang, performing with one of the world’s most celebrated vocal ensembles, The King’s Singers, to a sold out crowd in QPAC’s Concert Hall.

In May, returning to QPAC after their acclaimed performance of You and I at the 2011 Brisbane Cabaret Festival, husband and wife duo Ian Stenlake and Rachael Beck join the Queensland Pops Orchestra for On Broadway. A celebration of the musicals of The Great White Way, this concert will have the audience laughing, crying, sighing and melting to the glorious sounds of the stage.Virtuoso clarinet and saxophone artist Andy Firth returns to perform with the ‘Pops’ for a third time to get you swinging with Music to Swing By in August. Jesus Christ Superstar

IS it just another Christian Holiday shunted on top of an ancient Jewish Festival or is there a genuine story behind the celebration of Easter?

It’s no secret to most that the title character in “Jesus Christ Superstar” does not come to a happy end, drifting blissfully into old age and obscurity in the backblocks of Judea. His gruesome death is depicted with simplicity, empathy and typical PRIMA (Pine Rivers Musical Association) flair in director Mel Beilby’s adaptation of the pop-rock musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

This classic show is

brought to life by a fantastic cast. PRIMA stalwart, Richard Muller brings the tormented uncertainty of Tim Rice’s Jesus to life, culminating the powerful questioning of Gethsemane. Mel Evans plays the caring and gentle Mary with dignity and grace and her love of her ‘Lord’ is beautifully portrayed in I Don’t Know How To Love Him. Lawrie Esmond literally resonates as Caiaphas, the role he and his amazing voice were ‘born to play’ all over Brisbane. Pierre Nicol embodies Pontius Pilate’s maniacal grip on power and his desire to keep it by appeasing the

masses’ blood lust. And Malcolm Christian is the perfect protagonistic foil as Judas, soaring through the complex melodies and darkness of the character with the skill of a seasoned professional.

Add to this list a host of other minor roles and an excellent supporting chorus, and the number of ‘ordinary people’ involved in this extraordinary production reaches almost fifty.

This is simply because the show is always a hit wherever it plays and when PRIMA brings its production to Bray Park (April 20, 21, 22, 25, 27 & 28) the audience will be left wanting more and more and more.

I CAN remember listening to Bob Dyer on the radio in the late forties. His radio shows always sounded like great fun to me and I was fascinated by his American accent.

Bob Dyer became a household name in Australia through his quiz shows and his catchphrases such as, “Howdy customers howdy, Happy lathering customers and Tell em’ Bob sent you.

Robert “Bob” Dies was born in Tennessee in 1909.

Whatever happened to …Bob Dyer He left school at the age of twelve and in his teenage years worked at many jobs before becoming a vaudeville artist and touring the United States as a singer and comedian.

For obvious reasons he used the stage name of Bob Dyer. Bob first came to Australia in 1936 at the age of twenty seven to tour with Jim Davidson’s ABC Dance Band. He returned to Sydney in 1937, this time to perform his hillbilly and ukulele act

whilst appearing in The Marcus Show. In 1940 Bob Dyer produced a radio series for 3DB titled, The Last of the Hillbillies.

Whilst performing at The Tivoli Theatre in Sydney Bob fell in love. During The Crazy Gang he met a beautiful young showgirl named Thelma Phoebe McLean who used the stage name of “Dolly Mack” - it was virtually “love at first sight.” The young couple married

shortly after their first meeting and spent their honeymoon in Surfers Paradise. Bob and Dolly entertained the troops during the Second World War. In the mid 1940’s Bob began hosting national radio shows such as Bob Dyer’s Variety Show and Can You Take It. The format for these shows involved lots of stunts and jokes that involved the studio audience and made fun listening for the thousands

glued to their radio sets waiting to hear what would happen next. In 1948 Bob started a new show titled Pick a Box which went on to run for twenty three years. His other radio shows included Can You Take it, Cop the Lot and It Pays to be Funny. Bob and Dolly lived at Beauty Point in NSW and loved to be near the water as they were both keen on fishing. There was a “staged rivalry” between

Bob and his fellow radio quizmaster Jack Davey and the pair would often be seen in The Movietone News in publicity stunts.

When television began Bob successfully transferred two of his shows, It Pays to be Funny and Pick a Box to the new medium. In 1960 a young contestant named Barry Jones appeared on Pick a Box for the first time and went on to become a household name.

George Partridge was another popular contestant.

In 1961 Bob Dyer won the Gold Logie for the Most Popular Personality on Australian Television. In 1971 Bob and Dolly announced their retirement

and moved to The Isle of Capri on The Gold Coast to pursue their hobby of deep-sea fishing. Between them, they broke 50 world and 150 Australian records. Bob passed away in 1984 and Dolly lived in retirement in Gympie for another twenty years until her death in 2004. Bob Dyer was one of the Australian radio legends and we remember Bob and Dolly fondly.

SENIORS NEWS West Moreton Country Music Social WEST Moreton Country Music Social is held on the third Friday of the month. The next social will be held on Friday, 20 April at Ipswich show grounds at the Greyhound Racing Club House, Cnr. Salisbury & Warwick Roads, Ipswich. The venue is licensed and hot meals are available from 6pm.

Carindale National Seniors CARINDALE National Seniors had a very good meeting on the 13th March with 111 present. Many apologies and 6 new members. At the meeting we welcomed President Eddie and his wife Greer back from their travels. It is good to have them home again. Unfortunately we have many members who are not in the best of health and we wish them a speedy recovery and return to our meetings.

Unfortunately due to unforseen circumstances we were unable to have our bus trip to Pomona. We do hope they will be able to rebuild after the devastating flooding. President Eddie was able to find alterative arrangements for the day and were able to visit “Twin Towns” for the day.

We were entertained and had lunch, then had a quick visit to the strawberry farm for an ice cream on the way home, so we thought that the change was

perfect. Thankyou President Eddie for your quick thinking.

At our March meeting we had Wayne Evans from RACQ “Care Flight” as our guest speaker. He was very informative and we realised not only are they mercy flights but many other activities also including fire fighting. This was another wonderful meeting with much friendship just meeting old friends. The Entertainment for April meeting will be by “A Touch of Sparkle” which will include music singing and dancing, so hope to see you all present. Carindale NSA meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month {except of December and January} We have good raffles at our monthly meetings and encourage good friendship. Meetings are held at the “Clem Jones Sports Centre” –/ “Carina Bowls Club” Stanley Rd Carina.

AN apple a day keeps the doctor away and so do medical jokes.

A nurse examining a patient, who was hard of hearing, put the stethoscope to her chest and said ‘Big breaths’. Patient replied ‘They used to be bigger.’

Bright young thing broke up with her doctor boyfriend and told her friend that he asked for all the presents to be returned.

“Really.”

‘Yes and he sent a bill for all the house calls!’

Lady patient in the doctor’s room was making a great fuss that she wanted to have a hysterectomy. But, Mrs. Green, you’re 77 years old.

So? I don’t want grandchildren!’

A patient not happy with his diagnosis and made a great fuss complaining to his doctor. He had been to three other doctors and none agreed with the diagnosis.

Doctor waited for a bit of silence and then said ‘That’s all right. Wait un-

til the autopsy report and they’ll find I was right’ A patient turned up at a brand new surgery, new doctors and new nurses and said he wanted to see a doctor about an in-growing toe nail.

Bossy nurse said, ‘Go into that cubicle take off your clothes and put on this gown’ ‘What? Get undressed to examine a toe nail?’

‘Standard rules’ she said.

While getting changed he grumbled aloud, that’s when a gruff and grumpy male voice from the next cubicle said ‘That’s nothing mate, I came here to fix the phones.’

Tower Mill Ghost: Brisbane’s oldest remaining building, the Tower Mill in Wickham

last century stories have circulated about the tower being haunted.

Residents of Wickham Terrace claimed that sometimes when they looked up at the small window facing the street they could see a faint glow and a figure inside the tower, swinging

gently from side to side.

very spot where he appeared, and died while being flogged on the Captain’s orders exactly one month before.

Logan met his own death while on another expedition. He set out with his batman and five trusted convicts on 9 November 1830 to map a creek west of the outpost at Limestone Hills (Ipswich). The party was stalked for most of its journey and attacked twice by hostile Aborigines but, despite this apparent danger, Logan went off on his own on 17 October, planning to rejoin the party at a prearranged rendezvous at dusk.

When he found he could not reach the spot before nightfall, Logan built a rough shelter and settled down for the night. In the early hours of the morning of the 18th he was attacked and killed by Aborigines- or, according to some historians- by convicts.

At noon that day a party of prisoners working on the river bank at the Moreton Bay settlement spotted Captain Logan, on horseback on the far side of the river, waving to them. None had any doubts about who it was. Two of them downed tools and hastily launched the punt that was used to ferry people across the river and rowed over to pick up their Commandant. When they arrived on the south bank (the spot where Stimson’s ghost had disappeared and the Queensland Performing Arts Complex now stands) there was no sign of Logan. He and his horse had vanished into thin air.

At that time Captain Logan’s battered body was growing cold in a shallow grave in the bush seventy kilometres inland.

Residents of Ipswich also lay claim to having seen Logan’s ghost in more recent times at the spot where he met his death. There is a small reserve there now, 1.6 kilometres from the junction of Logan’s Creek and the Brisbane River. A night or two spent there (if you can stand the mosquitoes) might reward you with a glimpse of the ghost of the Fell Tyrant.

surveying and mapping the wild terrain. It was while returning from one of these excursions, riding alone along a bush track in what is now South Brisbane, that Logan met a ghost.

The Captain spotted a man in convict uniform a few yards in front of him and, thinking it was an escapee from the settlement, hailed him and ordered him to stop.

Logan expected the figure to run but to his surprise it approached him, reached out a sinewy arm and grabbed one of his stirrups.

Logan’s horse took fright and reared. The Captain lashed out with his riding crop but the blow passed straight through the shadowy figure. He spurred his horse to a gallop but the ghost clung on, floating effortlessly beside the terrified horse and rider.

It was not until they were nearing the south bank of the Brisbane River that the ghost suddenly let go and disappeared.

Logan’s fear may seem out of character for a ruthless man with an inquiring mind, but something else had unsettled him: Captain Logan had recognised the ghost. It was a convict called Stimson who had absconded, been recaptured at the

BRISBANE convict ghost: Brisbane’s oldest ghost story (really two stories in one) concerns the most controversial figure in the city’s early history, Captain Patrick Logan of His Majesty’s 57th Regiment of Foot, Commandant of the Penal Settlement at Moreton Bay from 1825 to 1830.

Logan was a man of vision and an able administrator who converted the dismal outpost he commanded into a well-organised and efficient colony, but Logan is not remembered for his good deeds; only his bad. His cruel treatment of the convicts at Moreton Bay earned him the title the Fell Tyrant and made him the subject of one of Australia’s best-known folk songs, ‘Moreton Bay’, which describes the horrific plight of convicts under his rule.

Misconduct earned them up to 300 lashes and many died, strapped to the flogging frame.

Logan was feared and despised by the convicts, and the final verse of ‘Moreton Bay’ rejoices at his violent death.

The Captain was also a courageous explorer who made many journeys. sometimes alone, into the interior,
