From the President and CEO Dear Friends,

When I think of the many extraordinary assets within our town, Greenwich Hospital

is certainly the first that comes to mind. Having a well-resourced medical facility close to home has been valued by the community since the hospital first opened its doors to patients on September 12, 1906.

In the late 1990’s, Greenwich Hospital launched a $60 million capital campaign

for a new building in response to the changing community needs for expanded services.

With the opening of the Leona and Harry B. Helmsley Medical building in 1999, and

the Thomas and Olive C. Watson Pavilion in 2006, Greenwich Hospital entered a new era of caring.

We have achieved many successes throughout the years, thanks to the unending

support from our generous donors and dedicated volunteers. As Greenwich Hospital prepares to further enhance clinical services and ambulatory centers in lower Fairfield

Carl Bennett has a 98-year legacy with Greenwich Hospital. He was born in the hospital’s Benedict Building in 1920, and grew up on Steamboat Road. Along with his late wife, Dorothy, Bennett has been a major donor and supporter of the hospital and the community for decades.

The couple met when Bennett returned home from serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. They were married in 1951 and settled in Stamford where he conceptualized the discount department store that would later become a hugely successful chain in the Northeast.

Bennett credits his father, a local grocer, for teaching him the retail acumen that led to the successful startup.

He had saved $8,000 from his military pay to invest in the second-floor loft in Port Chester that became home to their first store. They called it Caldor, a combination of their first names, Carl and Dorothy. The husband and wife team kept a busy pace, working in the store daily. “Despite

In time, the first floor of the building Caldor occupied became vacant, so Carl Bennett sought to expand the store.

He received a loan from a local banker who requested a monthly report on Caldor’s operations. “He was a very fine gentleman,” said Bennett. “Without the loan, I couldn’t have done it.” Shortly thereafter, a second store opened in Riverside, Connecticut.

Caldor grew steadily, going public on the American Stock Exchange in 1961. It was important for Bennett to be within driving distance or a helicopter ride to each store so he could make impromptu visits to any of their locations, the farthest in Baltimore. “The 60s were a time for growth and the 70s were the pinnacle of their success,” said Kanarek. said. “We now need to educate the public on the huge benefits it offers, including improving quality of life and offering patients relief from symptoms and stress while undergoing treatment. I hope to be a part of that educational process.”

Continuing a family’s history of support Kanarek was approached by the hospital’s former president and CEO, Frank A. Corvino, to serve on the board of trustees. “Since my family had a strong relationship with Greenwich, I thought it would be a great opportunity to contribute to the excellent work the hospital provides the community,” said Kanarek.

“Most fulfilling is that I am an RN sitting on the board,” she continued. “Many hospitals do not have nurses as board members, so it is an honor to be a part of this select group.”

Kanarek serves on the board’s Quality and Safety and Strategic Planning committees. She also chairs the Community Advisory Committee, monitoring the progress of implementation strategies and helping steer the hospital’s efforts to meet community needs.

In the midst of Greenwich Hospital’s rapid expansion, Kanarek hopes to continue the advancement of palliative

Passing the baton Carl Bennett now wants to relax and enjoy life. He entrusts his daughter’s active involvement in Greenwich Hospital’s future plans. “He sort of passed the baton to me,” said Kanarek. “But he will always give his advice and suggestions.”

Both Bennett and Kanarek understand the importance of community, friendship, respect and wanting to help others. “I cannot say enough about the many volunteers who are truly committed to the prosperity of Greenwich Hospital,” said Kanarek.

The O’Malley Family

Treasure

of Greenwich Hospital

Mary Alice and Thomas O’Malley moved to Greenwich in the summer of 1975 after living in Switzerland for nine years. At the time, Thomas O’Malley worked for an international trading organization in Manhattan, and learned of Greenwich from friends and family. The town’s reputation for excellent schools and convenient access to New York City appealed to the young couple. Today, the O’Malleys’ four children still reside in Greenwich, and they are the proud grandparents of ten grandchildren, all born at Greenwich Hospital.

Mary Alice O’Malley has been involved with Greenwich Hospital for over 40 years, and is the guiding light for the family’s philanthropic support as it relates to health care. Her interest in supporting initiatives that make a difference for her family, extended family and neighbors is apparent.

A graduate of St. Vincent’s Medical Center School of Nursing in New York City, O’Malley’s healthcare background inspired her great interest in supporting healthcare institutions. In addition to her affiliation with Greenwich Hospital, she served on the advisory boards at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and Martin Memorial Hospital in Stuart, FL.

At Children’s National Medical Center, the O’Malleys supported an initiative that included a longitudinal research study, scholarly support, and a national network of specialized research and clinical care centers for Urea Cycle Disorder, a rare pediatric disease.

As a registered nurse, O’Malley sought opportunities that fueled her passion for health care, including training in hospice care and volunteering for Greenwich Hospital’s Home Hospice program. For several years, she visited patients in their homes, ensuring their emotional and spiritual needs were met and their final days were made as comfortable as possible. “It was a privilege and rewarding experience helping others during their time of need,” she said.

O’Malley also volunteered for Call-A-Ride of Greenwich, an organization that provides free door-todoor transportation for Greenwich’s senior citizens who lack other means of transportation. “Greenwich Hospital played a very important part in that, as I made many trips there with patients for rehabilitation and other necessary care.”

hospital’s annual gala, calling them “incredibly wonderful and generous people.” When he met with them to discuss the development of the hospital’s pediatric emergency program and the benefits it would bring to all children in the area, the O’Malleys immediately agreed to help make it happen. “They are true leaders who value the importance of supporting their local hospital,” said Roth.

The importance of philanthropy Philanthropy is of utmost importance to the O’Malley family. They have given generously to Greenwich Hospital through the years, most recently committing $1 million to initiate pediatric emergency services. For the grandmother of ten grandchildren, six under the age of seven, Mary Alice O’Malley admits there have been many trips with little ones to the Emergency Department.

The 24/7 coverage now provided by Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital pediatric emergency medicine specialists was championed by the family. “We’ve seen it in other hospitals and it was very necessary for Greenwich Hospital to be able to provide this coverage, assuring that specialized care can be given to all children at any hour of the day or night,” O’Malley said. She also appreciates the hospital’s newly constructed pediatric emergency waiting room, remarking that it helps make a child’s emergency experience less frightening.

The O’Malleys’ daughter, Kathleen O’Malley Morrissy, and daughter-in-law, Lauren O’Malley, have also been supportive of Greenwich Hospital through the Under the Stars fundraising event, an annual benefit for Women’s and Children’s Services. Both served on the volunteer committee for several years. O’Malley co-chaired the event in 2013 and 2014, and Morrissy has continuously supported the fundraiser as a committee member and for its auction over the years with generous donations from her specialty gift shop, Hoagland’s of Greenwich.

Advances in health care are a regular topic of discussion for both Mary Alice and Thomas O’Malley, who have been particularly supportive of initiatives involving children. “The opportunities that we see have much less to do about buildings per se, but focus more on really making sure that any hospital where our family is cared for is a facility that is up-to-date,” said Thomas O’Malley.

“Greenwich has done a very good job of keeping up-to-date with the latest treatments and medical technology. They have an excellent staff of doctors, a terrific staff of nurses and are an overall well-managed organization,” he added. “Greenwich Hospital is a beacon for a lot of other institutions to follow.” n

Greenwich, Connecticut, 1903. As trolleys clanged along thoroughfares and the population grew, a philanthropic band of women responded to a call to improve hospital facilities in the 13,000-resident town. They shortly collected $400 for a newly created fund to support the hospital’s eventual opening in 1906. This was the first of many such contributions that the women of Greenwich were to make in the next half-century.

From that time 115 years ago, the history of Greenwich Hospital has been inseparable from that of its original Women’s Committee (1907-1910) and its successors, the Women’s Board (1911-1949) and today’s Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary, begun in 1950.

This dedicated corps of volunteers has consistently given time without compensation to Greenwich Hospital since its formal opening in 1906. They were committed to the upkeep of the hospital and later raised money for the general maintenance fund. In 1921, the Women’s Board

established a thrift shop that turned a profit in its first year of operation and continues to thrive to this day.

Volunteer activities have changed dramatically over the years. By the late 1940s, it was apparent that recruitment of volunteers should be open to the entire community. In January 1950, the Women’s Board merged with the newly established Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary, which offered membership to all.

Today’s Auxiliary The Auxiliary continues to support the hospital through the work of its members and financial contributions. “The majority of our volunteers give back to the hospital for two reasons,” said Stacey Green, director of Volunteer Services. “They’re not all able to donate financially, but they do want to give back to the community by donating their time.”

Last month, the Gift Shop received an award for retail excellence in health care from the American Hospital Association and the Association for Health Care Volunteer Resource Professionals. This award recognized the Gift Shop and its volunteers for achieving exemplary results and demonstrating substantial benefit to the hospital and community.

“It’s a seven-day-a-week business,” said Green. “There are 38 volunteers and three paid employees who staff the shop and help make it a successful operation. They do the buying, meet with vendors, stock the shelves and run the cash register, all with smiles on their faces. This award was a great way to honor those volunteers who have been with us in the Gift Shop for such a long time.”

Green accepted the award at the 50th Annual Association for Health Care Volunteer Resource Professional’s Conference & Exposition Recognition Breakfast in Chicago, where the work and achievements of the Greenwich Hospital Auxiliary gained national recognition from hospitals around the country.

Appreciated by many Green speaks highly of the Greenwich Hospital administration for recognizing the value of volunteers.

“Volunteers are very much a part of the team, and the respect the hospital has for them is impressive,” she said.

Randolph is also appreciative of the educational opportunities offered to volunteers. “Stacey has come up with a ’Lunch and Learn‘ series that features presentations by hospital employees on their particular areas of expertise,” she said. “Whatever your role is as a volunteer, these kinds of events make your work that much more meaningful.”

The Auxiliary has grown and evolved over the years to meet the needs of the hospital. With the current capital expansion plans and development of satellite facilities to increase specialty care in Fairfield and Westchester counties, Randolph envisions a greater need for volunteers.

“We are always looking for ways to develop new opportunities,” she said. “Our members are smart, talented individuals who want to give back in creative ways that truly make a difference.”

Today, the Auxiliary is made up of more than 500 volunteers who last year donated more than 45,000 hours of time to the Greenwich Hospital community. “I have been with the hospital for 11 years, and I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to work with many different Auxiliary presidents and volunteers who have all taught me so much,” said Green. “They are a treasure and a blessing to me personally, but more importantly to the hospital and our patients.”

EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT at Greenwich Hospital Split-Second Skill and Leading-Edge Technology for Safe, Effective Care From life-threatening conditions to broken bones, cuts and sprains, the team at Greenwich Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) provides exceptional, round-the-clock care to the community. Its staff of board-certified emergency medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurses and nurse practitioners are specially trained to handle a myriad of medical conditions as promptly and efficiently as possible.

In a medical emergency, every second counts. Last year, the ED handled nearly 39,000 visits from patients, one out of every four, a child.

“Having an Emergency Department close to home that can provide acute care and the resources to get everything done in a timely manner is crucial,” said Christopher Davison, MD, the department’s medical director.

“This was a major accomplishment when you consider that we renovated every corner of the Emergency Department and never once shut our doors,” said Norman G. Roth, the hospital’s president and CEO. The renovations were almost entirely funded by donor contributions.

During the last year, Greenwich’s ED has further enhanced services by bringing Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital (YNHCH) pediatric emergency medicine specialists to care for children, offering the community the most advanced pediatric emergency services in the region.

This will be complemented by the expanded services of the YNHCH Pediatric Specialty Center being relocated from the main hospital to 500 W. Putnam Ave. this fall.

The hub of the hospital As Greenwich Hospital embarks on plans to enhance clinical services and ambulatory centers in lower Fairfield and Westchester counties, emergency services remain central to the needs of all patients. “Clinical growth isn’t possible without continuing to support investments in technology and expertise in the ED,” said Roth. “It is a gateway to many more services in the hospital and will remain a high priority for the hospital’s future growth.” Proceeds from this year’s Gala fundraiser will ensure that the ED continues to thrive as the “front door” to the hospital.

“For a lot of people, their Emergency Department experience might be their only exposure to the hospital,” said Dr. Davison, noting that 80 percent of patients are discharged from the ED without being admitted for additional care. When necessary, an array of specialists and subspecialists are available for consultation with the ED staff. “Whether it’s a surgeon we need to contact about an appendicitis, a gastroenterologist about a GI bleed or an ENT about a nosebleed, we interact with the entire medical staff.”

Over the past 20 years, Greenwich Hospital’s affiliation with Yale New Haven Health has resulted in many clinical advances. Cardiology care, for instance, has been significantly strengthened with the addition of six full-time cardiologists from the Yale Medicine practice now seeing patients in Greenwich. “When I first started here 15 years

John Magnan, MD ago, we needed to transfer patients to a tertiary care center if they were having a heart attack,” said Dr. Davison. “Now, we have a primary angioplasty program with full-time coverage by interventional cardiologists and two state-ofthe-art cardiac catheterization labs.”

Greenwich Hospital was the first healthcare facility in Fairfield County to earn national certification as a primary stroke center from the Joint Commission, the nation’s oldest health care standards-setting and accrediting body. Future advances in neuroscience will further refine emergency care at the hospital. These include the ability to perform thrombectomy, a procedure to remove a clot from inside a blocked blood vessel. Last year, four hundred and thirtyseven men and women suffering from a heart attack or stroke came to Greenwich Hospital to receive cutting-edge critical care.

Pride in patient satisfaction “Among the qualities that set Greenwich apart from other area hospitals is the pride we take in how our patients experience their care,” said Dr. Davison. The ED consistently achieves high patient satisfaction scores from Press Ganey, a leading provider of patient experience measurement.

“We’ve received monthly scores in the 95th and 96th percentiles nationwide, so patients choose us not only for the overall great medical experience, but for the way we treat them personally, as well.”

There are many touchpoints that make up a patient’s visit to the ED, from their triage experience at the front desk to their relationships with the nurses, physicians, lab technicians and registrar. “A negative experience with any one of these individuals can make or break a person’s overall perception,” said Dr. Davison, who meets weekly with representatives from each section of the department to address patient feedback.

Dr. Davison is proud to work in a well-resourced department. “If we don’t have something that staff thinks would help with patient care or patient satisfaction, we are pretty much able to get it,” he said. “A lot of that support comes through donations, which are extremely important in allowing us to provide the highest level of care.” n

If your child suffers a sudden injury or illness, he or she might end up in the Emergency Department at Greenwich Hospital – which is now even better prepared to offer immediate specialized care.

Last fall, Greenwich Hospital teamed up with pediatric emergency medicine physicians at top-ranked Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital (YNHCH) to provide the most advanced pediatric emergency services in the area.

“We’ve always taken care of every emergency patient, regardless of age,” said Christopher Davison, MD, medical director of Greenwich Hospital’s Emergency Department.

Nearly 25 percent of the roughly 39,000 patients treated in the ED each year are children and adolescents under the age of 18.

“What’s new is that specially trained pediatric emergency medicine physicians from YNHCH’s Emergency Department are now available in Greenwich to provide an additional skill level and coverage,” Dr. Davison said.

Specialized care for children Currently, a team of eight board-certified pediatric emergency medicine physicians and nurse practitioners provides round-the-clock care in Greenwich’s ED. They also provide increased in-house nighttime coverage for young patients who have already been admitted to the hospital’s pediatric unit. “That’s a huge boost to our community pediatricians, knowing their patients are cared for 24/7,” Dr. Davison said. “It also gives families confidence that there’s a pediatric provider here.”

This expansion of pediatric services dovetails with recent multimillion-dollar improvements and renovations throughout the Emergency Department. A separate pediatric waiting room – featuring a virtual fish tank, child-size furniture and age-appropriate books, TV programming and interactive media – helps to make a child’s visit less stressful.

Three new examining rooms are exclusively designed for treating young people, including “fast track” areas for those with less serious bumps, cuts and sprains.

Partnership enhances care Collaborating with Dr. Davison on the development of this innovative program is Karen Santucci, MD, section chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. YNHCH is nationally ranked in nine specialties

by U.S. News & World Report, the highest in Connecticut and among the highest ranked in the nation. “Parents have peace of mind with the added level of support and expertise that our pediatric emergency medicine physicians bring to Greenwich Hospital,” she said.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, pediatric emergency physicians are medical doctors with at least four years of medical school education, three or more years of residency training in either pediatrics or emergency medicine, and at least two years of fellowship training in pediatric emergency medicine. They are certified by either the American Board of Pediatrics or the American Board of Emergency Medicine as specialists in pediatric emergency medicine.

Pediatric emergency physicians are experienced in diagnosing and treating a variety of conditions in infants, children, teens and young adults. Major emergencies include fractures, head injuries, burns, and conditions resulting from motor vehicle crashes, falls or other incidents. They also treat acute medical problems, such as high or persistent fever, serious infections, difficulty breathing, severe pain, dehydration, seizures and allergic reactions, as well as poisonings and overdoses. These physicians know how to establish an instant rapport with children, providing assurance that they are in a safe, friendly place where caregivers understand what they are going through. n

Complementing Greenwich Hospital’s emergency services for children, YNHCH’s pediatric specialists see patients at the hospital’s Pediatric Specialty Center, a 9,000-square-foot facility opening this fall at 500 W. Putnam Ave., Greenwich. The center offers families access to nationally ranked pediatric specialty care, including orthopedics, endocrinology, urology, cardiology, pulmonology, oncology, allergy, surgery and gastroenterology. In addition to physicians, the staff is comprised of YNHCH’s registered nurses, medical assistants, child life specialists, nutritionists and social workers specially trained and dedicated to addressing the developmental and emotional needs of children and families.
