connecting green and infrastructure

Our GreenMax products are used to protect and establish newly transplanted trees, and also to invigorate and enhance the future growth and value of existing trees. Previously called DeepRoot Europe, we supplied proven root control products from the American company DeepRoot, who have a leading market position in the field of tree root guidance and tree root barriers since 1976. These high quality barriers and guiding products are the accepted solution to prevent damage caused by tree roots, such as raised paving and to pipes and cables. We have recognised the need for a complete planting detail for successful establishment of trees in the built environment and have developed and sourced a comprehensive range of additional products, working with Europe’s leading Arboriculturalists and Landscape Architects, undertaking long term trials, to offer our customers the best solution for each application. In 2007, we changed our name to GreenMax, having expanded our portfolio from not only root barriers, but to the complete tree planting solution. Our service is bespoke, we offer a standard catalogue, but will also freely offer advice for specific applications. Helping Trees to Survive in the Urban Environment Our products are designed to help trees to survive in a world of increasing concrete, paving and buildings whilst protecting trees and infrastructure from each other. We see the increasing demand for complex infrastructure and the need for more planting green in the urban environment. This is a positive development because there are many economical benefits for increasing the life expectancy of trees, providing a good infrastructure and creating healthy street trees within the city. Together with the economical benefits, the quality of life in our cities will also be positively affected by an increase in the number of trees and the creation of landscapes. Innovation and durability For decades, the innovative products of GreenMax have been used to improve the tree planting pit and protect the infrastructure. GreenMax values the quality and the correct installation of the materials. Our products are made of high-quality 100% recyclable materials which can be returned for recycling when they are no longer needed.

2

Back to Source Recycling Our products are mostly produced from plastic materials and it is often assumed that these are harmful for the environment. What people do not know is that most plastics are relatively easy to produce and many of these products are already produced from other recycled plastic materials. GreenMax wants to create a full circle for the products that we produce and supply. That is why we would like to see our products to be reused again and again. When the products are no longer needed they can be removed from the soil and recycled. Afterwards these materials can be used again to create new durable products. In this way GreenMax hopes to have a positive contribution to the recycling process. Advice Advice on selection of the right products is important for the success of a project, because every location has its own specific problems. Consider the choices to use root barriers or root guiding, the use of water infiltration and the possibilities for an underground root management system. We have many years of experience and notable expertise in this field making it possible for us to offer you solid and reliable advice. Root and Water Management

Where to apply?

The limiting factors in the growth of urban trees are small tree pit volume and highly compacted, poor-quality soil which can be found in urban areas. The Silva Cell速 system provides a large volume for the roots to grow while maximising the usable space both above and below ground. The system can be applied in areas where more space for the roots is needed. Silva Cell速 is suitable for all traffic loads. The system also has a large capacity to store excess storm water (+/-25%). The modular design is flexible and ideal for almost any application as the frames do not have to be interconnected. The Silva Cell速 gives trees the every opportunity to flourish and grow into beautiful trees within the urban environment. Whilst at the same time providing a functional water storage.

- parking spaces - squares - pavement - cycle lanes - parks - roof gardens - above parking garages

Trees receive the necessary space while the usable space remains optimal. The groundwater is maintained and at the same time biological remediation takes place. The water storage and the draining is maintained with the possibility to store or create a slow/fast infiltration, improving the growing conditions for trees in the urban environment.

Improve growing conditions for trees in the urban environment Advantages for the city When urban trees grow they increase the amount of shade and reduce the temperature in urban environments. Large trees have up to 70% higher capacity to clean air of fine particles, compared to smaller or unhealthy trees. Excess water can either be stored or designed to drain away.

SandwichPanel 74

Pressure-Distributing Drainage Plate

Product specifications

SandwichPanel 74 is the new improved version on previous sandwich-systems: “the lowest installation depth on the market, with a high load capacity. Principle of the Sandwich Construction The sandwich construction replaces the foundation layer, creating a thinner base course and increasing the available tree root space. The panels carry and distribute the load pressure in combination with geotextiles. SandwichPanel 74 is specially developed for situations where the traffic loads cannot fully be handled by tree substrates and to prevent local rutting. The open structure creates a second surface preventing tree roots causing damage to the paving or path.

infiltration plate for horizontal and vertical infiltration and drainage three-dimensional infiltration and tree root space infiltration speed: 189 litres per min/meter loading capacity: approx. 74 tons/m2 material: recycled PP, reinforced for high pressure, 100% recyclable panel sizes (8 units): 1040 x 960 x 52 mm, with click system on all sides to create large surface areas nominal weight: 4.58 kg/m2

Application SandwichPanel 74 is placed on a layer of tree soil, or structural soil, underneath the pavement surfacing. The system can be used in areas with existing or newly planted trees. SandwichPanel 74 is also a good alternative when it is not possible to use other subsurface structures or in areas with a high groundwater level. We advise that the system should not be used within 2 metres of the tree without additional measures.

Root Barrier or Root Guidance system? How to choose the right solution Damage caused by tree roots In our increasingly urbanised environment tree root growth can cause serious damage to our roads, pavements and underground infrastructure. To prevent this damage systems have been developed to stop or reduce unwanted root growth. There are two groups of root panels to stop damage: the root guidance system and root barriers. The two systems may seem alike but they perform very different functions. HDPE Root Barrier The difference between root barriers and root guidance A root barrier has smooth sides and can be made of different materials such as non-woven fabric or HDPE. A tree root will keep on circling along the panel once it has reached the root barrier due to the fact that a root barrier has no ability to guide roots. When a root barrier is installed too close to a tree the tree has no possibility to stabilize (‘flower pot’ effect). The root guiding panel is unique and has no alternatives. The guiding panel is provided with 90° vertical ribs when the tree root comes into contact with the guiding panel the ribs direct root growth downwards. Then the root arrives at the bottom of the panel it can proceed growing along its horizontal or radial path (when the tree pit is correctly prepared). The guiding panel is also provided with ground locks to stop roots lifting up the system as they exit beneath. The panels also have a double upper edge to make sure that roots, if any, cannot grow over the top edge and a simple coupling system that enables the panels to be easily connected.

Which system to choose? Root growth is influenced by the presence of nutrients and uncompacted space, we can stop roots and/or guide them to a place where they cannot damage roads, pavement and underground infrastructure. But how do we choose the right system? When to use a root barrier? A root barrier is used to create a root free zone to protect underground utilities against root growth. A root barrier can only be used when the available space is sufficient. As a rule of thumb: the distance between the barrier and the tree trunk should be at least 2 metres, this will depend on the diameter of the mature tree trunk. Use the following calculation method to determine the right distance between the root barrier and the tree trunk: the minimum distance between the root barrier and tree foot is three times the diameter of the mature tree trunk. For column trees this distance can be less because of a lower wind resistance. When to use root guiding? If a panel is to be installed with a distance of less than 2 metres from the tree in order to protect i.e. roads: a guiding system should be used to guarantee the stability of the tree. Lift up by tree roots is prevented which results in huge savings in the cost of road maintenance. This system can be placed completely around the root ball and will prevent the ‘flower pot’ effect while promoting stability. The panels with a height of 30, 45 and 60 cm are most commonly used in situations where cables, pipes and other utilities need to be protected a height of 90 or 120 cm may be necessary.

“Our products are of the highest quality

Key points: Installation above grade The guiding panels and the vertically installed root barriers need to be installed 1 to 2 cm above grade to avoid roots to grow over the system. When this aesthetically is not an option and the panel will be placed at grade, please make sure to cut away rhizomes which may grow over the panel.

Height of the panel/barrier Choosing the right height depends on: 1) The depth of the protected area/object 2) The ground water level Most roots do not grow in wet soil. Therefore our advice is to make sure that there is a distance of at least 20 cm between the bottom of the panel and the groundwater-level.

Soil preparation The soil behind the guiding panel needs to be compacted. This will help to avoid upward root growth after reaching the bottom of the panel.

RootMaster®

Tree Root Guide

Properties

The guide system was designed in 1976 to prevent paving from being pushed up. Young tree roots grow horizontally and are stopped by the specially profiled panel. The guide ribs force the roots straight down (without the ribs the roots would continue to circle along the wall, as a result of which the tree would suffocate and would not become stable). Once reaching the bottom (when using LR30, DR45 and DR60) the roots can continue to grow horizontally, so that the tree becomes well anchored into the earth and damage to paving is avoided. RootMaster® can be used within 2 m¹ of the tree. Conventional root barriers do not guide roots and therefore offer no stability and limit the room to grow. Root barriers can only be used at distances of 2 m¹ from trees. Root guiding is used both for new plantings and after roots have been cut (renovation) to preserve the beauty and value of fully-grown trees. It is important to follow our installation advice to obtain the horizontal growth when using LR30, DR45 and DR60.

The guiding system is a series of interlocking panels that act as a root deflector placed between roots and hard landscapes. Tree roots grow horizontal and reflect on the vertical ribs. The 90 degree vertical ribs guide roots downward, deeper into the soil surrounding the barrier. Without ribs, the roots would continue to swirl around the walls of the barrier (flower pot effect), this can lead to instability and suffocation. When the roots have reached the lower edge of the guiding barrier they exit the system, accessing the soil volumes required to achieve a mature healthy tree. Before installation be well aware of the local ground conditions and water levels as it is necessary to have a layer of soil that will allow the roots to penetrate sufficiently.

Automatic Installation Root Barriers

The German company Profi Wurzelschutz has developed a revolutionary new cutter, making it possible to quickly and easily install root protection in a few steps. The automatic root cutter is a unique machine that is capable of: - Digging the trench - Placing the root barriers - Re-adding the soil - Compacting the soil These steps are all combined in 1 machine! The principle With a chain cutter a trench is made of approximately 10 cm. The existing roots in this area will be cut. Directly after this process a root barrier is placed in the narrow trench. The machine will ensure that the root protection will be placed at the correct depth. After the root barrier is placed the soil will be re-added directly to make sure that the root protection will stay at the same place. In the final step a compacter will compact the soil next to root barriers. Manoeuvrability The root cutting machine can also be used on very narrow roads and curves. The weight of the machine is lower than 4000 kg and it is therefore possible to drive over thin asphalt roads.

Root Barriers With our automated installation of root barriers it is possible to install 2 different types of root protection: - RootCommander Nonwoven: one of the toughest nonwoven root barriers available on the market - RootBlock 1 mm flex: specially designed for the root cutter. GreenMax Tree Boxes

Wood

The durable tree boxes designed by tree professionals for professionals in the landscape sector. If trees located on a permanent location are not an option for you, tree boxes will offer a good solution. It is important that your plants or trees are placed in an elegant tree box. GreenMax offers various customizable tree boxes to create an exclusively and unique look.

We only process tropical hardwood that is certified by the FSC, has legally been cut down and belongs to durability class 1. Through the use of hardwood, we create durable products with a warm appearance. Due to the high level of durability, the wood does not need any treatment. We make use of stainless-steel fasteners and the interior is lined with anti-rooting fabric. Some models can be customized.

We specialise in manufacturing high-quality tree boxes at a very competitive price. This sustainable Dutch quality product will certainly add value to your landscape design. It is possible to produce tree boxes in different sizes and shapes. The GreenMax tree boxes are available in wood, aluminium, corten steel, synthetic material, eps and in concrete. To give a more unique atmosphere it is possible to include LED lights to shine on your trees. Fibreglass

Concrete Cast composite stone is ideal for use outdoors. These tree boxes have a very high compressive strength and bending-resistance, many times higher than fibre-reinforced concrete. They are 100% watertight, and therefore also frost-proof. The concrete consists of natural minerals mixed with binding agents. The compact structure prevents dirt from attaching and a proper downpour will clean the product easily.

22

These tree boxes are manufactured from high-quality reinforced fibreglass. Because the reinforcement has been extended into the corners, these corners cannot tear out. The tree boxes are coloured throughout the entire material. The standard colour used is anthracite, but any RAL-colour is possible. The upper edge has been folded twice, which gives this tree box a splendid timeless appearance.

Aluminium These tree boxes are generally manufactured from 3 mm aluminium. Aluminium is light (only one third of the weight of steel or bronze), strong and wear and corrosion-resistant. The upper edge has been folded twice, which gives this tree box a splendid timeless and stout appearance. After manufacturing this tree box, we powder coat it with scratch-resistant colour coating. RAL colours and customization are possible.

GreenMax stands for exclusivity. Therefore it is possible to produce bespoke sizes and shapes to create an exclusive look. Interested in the different possibilities? Please do not hesitate to contact us.

Corten steel

EPS/Polyurea Tree boxes are also available in a combination of polystyrene (foam) and polyurea. This coating offers a long lasting protection against all weather conditions and offer a high damage resistance. These tree boxes are as stable and strong as steel tree boxes; but weigh less and are therefore more flexible to use.

Corten steel is an indestructible material with a warm appearance. Corten steel is a strong and weather-resistant type of steel that covers itself with a protective layer of rust when it is exposed to the open air. This natural fixed coating of rust provides protection against further corrosion. The upper edge has been folded twice, which gives this tree box a splendid timeless and stout appearance. Standard material thickness is 2 mm. Almost every measurement can be adjusted according to preference. All corten steel products come as newly fabricated steel. It may take several weeks to achieve the rusty look once exposed to the elements.

Irrigation System/ Aeration System Application: - Effective irrigation for trees in the urban environment - Injecting oxygen into the planting hole

Dripper

subsurface drip irrigation systems Traditional drip irrigation is found above ground, now with the invention of Dripper the lines can be buried below ground surface for a long trouble-free life. Subsurface irrigation allows the precise application of water, nutrients and other agrochemicals directly to the root zone of plants reducing volumes and consequently lower costs and pollution.

Why using subsurface drip irrigation? - Higher yields. Water and nutrients delivered directly to the root zone promote healthy plant growth and reduce plant stress. - Healthier, better quality crops. Soil and foliage are kept dry, reducing fungal diseases caused by surface or overhead irrigation. Eliminates fruit and vegetable spotting commonly caused by overhead irrigation. - Safe and efficient delivery of Fertilizers & Insecticides. Chemicals are directly applied to the roots with subsurface drip lines, reducing chemical pollution from leaching into the aquifer. - Fewer weeds. A dry soil surface reduces germination.

This allows the farmer to optimize the growing environment and leads to higher quality and quantity crop yields.

- Improved soil aeration. Fine soil particles are not washed down, decreasing soil compaction and improving root growth.

An efficient installation has water moving by capillary action at a depth of 10 to 75 cm beneath the surface, forming a continuous wetted area along the plant rows. Frequent irrigation cycles (several times daily) maximize capillary action and minimize water surfacing.

- Dry soil surface. With a dry soil surface, cultural operations and harvest can take place while the system is operating and it is even possible the use of lawns.

The depth and placement of subsurface driplines is determined by the soil composition and the crop needs. Aiming at the quality of the product, reliability and ease of use, Greenmax is providing the best products available in the Subsurface Irrigation market today.

- A longer or extended irrigation system life. The turbulent flow drip emitters and tubing are made with durable polymers. When placed underground the irrigation system is protected from damage caused by ultraviolet light, temperature fluctuations and damage due to cultural operations. - A great saving of water. Elimination of the losses for evaporation, deep percolation, superficial sliding and displacement of the damp due to the wind. - Less human or mechanical damage. No sprinkler heads, pipes or surface driplines that can cause injury, or be subjected to damage by vandalism, animals or harvest activities in the field. - Less salts. Less water also means less salts in the soils or the aquifer. - Lower maintenance costs. The system is installed permantly below cultivation depth, and requires no handling. - Fewer chemicals. Fungicides and insecticides are not washed off by irrigation water and the direct delivery through the system reduces waste.

Irrigating plants is as old as human beings, in the old days the Egyptians were already irrigating the land to improve the growth of green.

- Labor savings. Easier fertilizer application, less weed and disease control and less maintenance means less handling. - No obstacles during the mechanized harvesting (vintage, use of shakers, olive cultivation) - Improved orchard design because pipes are not visible. 31

AirMax & AquaMax

Aeration System & Irrigation System

Properties

Many (young) trees, shrubs and hedges in urban environments suffer from drought or do not have enough oxygen. This is usually caused by a compacted soil structure and/or the fact that rainwater hardly penetrates the soil. The AirMax aeration system and the AquaMax irrigation system is a highly effective and easy to install system for the convenient irrigation of trees. All AirMax and AquaMax hoses and tubes are standard provided with a polyester filtering cloth that allows an even infiltration of water (when used as irrigation) and a minimum of 45% diffusion (when used as aeration). The extra perforation makes it possible to use polyester filtering cloth with a very long life span, exceeding the lifespan of coconut fibre. A great advantage of our tubes is the fact that they are made from recycled products and are in turn 100% recyclable. The hoses, T-pieces and end caps are made from polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) and not from the harmful PVC.

AquaMax Water Reservoir

Dry soil in the urban environment will cause growth problems for young trees. The AquaMax water reservoir is a functional solution to keep the trees healthy. During the summer period it has an added benefit of protecting the trunk against mower or trimmer damage whilst in the winter it will protect against gritting operations. The inside of the water reservoir can be filled with a coconut fibre mat or wood scraps to prevent weeds. The water reservoir can easily be filled with water and has a large water storage capacity (see application). A small part of the AquaMax should be placed in the ground (+/- 10 cm). This will make sure that the water reservoir stays stable and that the water will remain in the area around the tree trunk. The water reservoir can be closed with double-sided tape or with a coupling. Properties - - - - -
