ach year, around this time, our magazine goes through the process of developing business plans for the following year. We talk about what went well the current year, and what we want to improve upon in the next year. A large part of our success is in this process. It is important that we take a step back from our daily duties of producing the magazine and website and assess our products and priorities. Contractors and dealers should take the same course of action and find the time away from their daily operations to evaluate their people, policies, and procedures. GIE+EXPO 2021 is on schedule for Oct. 20-22 in Louisville, KY. After a year away, it is a great event to attend for gathering ideas to use in your business planning. For dealers, the floor is open for you to talk business with distributors and manufacturers without the presence of contractors 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20. There are also specific educational opportunities for dealers as well through Bob Clements International, including a discussion on bulletproofing your business. Beyond dealers, the show also will

feature a Technology Summit for in-depth discussions on robotics and connectivity. Additional workshops will include focuses on irrigation, website use, estimating hardscape projects, marketing and much more. Attendees will have an opportunity for a hands-on demonstration of drone use as one of many direct opportunities to get behind the controls of the equipment. For the first time ever, there will be a UTV test track as part of the outdoor demonstration area. To learn more about some of the highlights of the show see the GIE+EXPO show preview on page 8. Whether it is through industry trade shows such as GIE+EXPO or publications like ours, it is important that you make the time to educate yourself on better business practices. As the industry evolves, improving your education will help you to better plan for the challenges ahead. Take what you learn and implement it in your own business plan.

virtual events became the norm during the pandemic, they simply can’t replace the networking and learning offered through in-person events. “While it will be great to see all the new and exciting products being introduced, the fact that we all will be able to be in person is the most critical,” says Nick Minas, go-to-market manager, John Deere. “The vast array of relationships built over the years that are vital to the industry’s success can be maintained in a virtual setting but to grow them requires being face-to-face, which is why returning to GIE+EXPO is so important.” There seems to be a renewed energy about the 2021 show and the stats are already bearing that out. At the time of this writing, registrations for the show were on pace to exceed those of 2019, the sixth record-breaking year in a row for the show.

ontractors, manufacturers, and green industry experts agree on at least one thing this year, it’s critical that the GIE+EXPO 2021 and Hardscape North America shows move forward Oct. 20-22 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. The largest green industry trade show has not been held in-person since October 2019. The industry is eager to come together again to learn new methods, share stories and see and touch new products. “Returning to Louisville for GIE+EXPO 2021 is going to be a fantastic experience,” says Jamie Briggs, director of marketing, Exmark. “Nothing replaces the experience of seeing, touching, and trying out the latest new equipment.” Jim Clayman, vice president of marketing for Aspire Products, ServiceTitan, notes that while

what they’re doing well, what the facility doing and how we can implement the latest protocols to make it as safe as possible,” Kiser says. From his perspective, moving forward with the show is simply in the industry’s DNA. “I always call it a family reunion and I mean that because its where everybody that knows one another or is related to one another in a business sense, comes back together to share stories and experiences and peer-topeer learn,” he says. “I really got a sense of it at our annual meeting in June where there was just this palpable relief that we were sort of back.” Manufacturers recognize the importance of the show and the opportunity to meet faceto-face with customers. “The past year and a half have demonstrated something we’ve known for a long time, just how innovative, adaptable and resilient green industry professionals are,” says Christina Propst, marketing manager, KIOTI Tractor. “From manufacturers like KIOTI Tractor to trade professionals and beyond, we’ve all taken away different lessons about how to successfully operate in the green industry during an

unpredictable period.” Echoing other exhibitor representatives, she said it’s time to come together, share lesson learned and get excited about new products and services coming to the market. “We’ve all been through a lot during the past year, and it will be incredible to reconnect in person and continue moving the green industry forward,” Propst says. Trade show are a significant aspect of the green industry that allow landscapers the ability to view and learn about the newest equipment from a variety of manufacturers in-person. “While learning about machines over the phone or online can be efficient, actually being able to see a machine up close, get your hands on it and discuss it with product experts is a much more thorough way to learn about machine solutions,” says Brank Kukuk,

“We’re excited to go back to work,” says Kris Kiser, managing partner of GIE+EXPO and OPEI president, also acknowledging that it has been challenging amidst the uncertainty of the pandemic. “I think we’ll be able to have the event in a very responsible, safe way,” Kiser says. “We just want to encourage people to come. We’re going to be reasonable and responsible, and your safety is in mind. The manufacturers are excited, the landscape contractors are excited, our partners are excited, and we’re planning on being there. “ Safety remains a paramount concern for many, while the excitement of reconnecting with retailers, dealers and industry professionals also is high for the upcoming event. “We are excited to participate in-person at GIE+EXPO 2021,” says Scott Sittler, marketing manager professional products, Husqvarna. “The safety of our employees is a top priority and to that end our presence will be in accordance with CDC guidelines and local rules and regulations.” GIE+EXPO will be following CDC guidelines and the direction offered by the facility itself, the city of Louisville and the state of Kentucky. “Right now, what we’re doing is recommending that vaccinated people attend and that if you’re unable to be vaccinated that you wear a mask,” Kiser says. “We don’t want to be in the mask policing business, you can’t with that many people.” However, he says organizers are being mindful of compression of people in food service areas and entrances and exits. “We’ll take steps to keep more doors open,” Kiser notes. “The nice thing about this at the facility, it’s big, it’s open and we’re not particularly crowded other than getting in and out.” Fortunately, there are a handful of events being held at the Kentucky Exposition Center prior to GIE+EXPO 2021, which can give them additional guidance in how to proceed. “We will have some good experiences ahead of the show to get a sense of at

“The ability to learn how other landscapers approach jobsite challenges, business challenges or other industry issues is incredibly valuable, especially as the industry works through a labor shortage,” Kukok notes. In addition to being the show’s return since 2019, it also marks the last time the event will be co-sponsored by OPEI, Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) and National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP). In 2022, OPEI will take 100% ownership of the show. “In 2022, the structure of the show changes, the name of the show changes, we’re rebranding it,” Kiser ○ The Vermeer compact articulated loaders (ATX) are designed to says. “We’ve got some new things coming that we hope meet the need for a highly maneuverable, versatile machine while to share with you at this year’s show about 2022.” having an added benefit of low turf disturbance. What to expect

Without question it has been a challenging year. Many manufacturers have faced logistical issues related to obtaining parts and material and as result held back on some new product rollouts. Kiser says to anticipate plenty of new products at the show. With expanded education on realworld topics such as drones, robotics, and connectivity, as well as features that put attendees behind the controls, this year’s show will offer a wide range of opportunities, including: • Hands-on Drone Zone where attendees can fly drones with expert trainers • Technology Summit presented by the National Association of Landscape Professionals • UTV Test Track • Remote Pilot Certification Course presented by the Indiana State University Aviation and Unmanned Systems Program

GIE+EXPO

With expanded education on real-world topics such as drones, robotics, and connectivity, as well as features that put attendees behind the controls, this year’s show will offer a wide range of opportunities.

• Expanded In-Tree Arborist Demos and Classroom Courses, including CEU opportunities • Opening keynote, “Leadership and a New World Order: The Need for Resilience,” featuring Retired U.S. Navy 4-star Admiral James Stavridis • Free dealer workshops by Bob Clements International, including a discussion on Bulletproofing Your Business Kiser notes that even the facility and grounds have been improved. Known for its outdoor exhibition space, asphalt rods have been added in that area and drainage has been greatly improved. “We don’t want to have inclement weather, but if we get it, it certainly drains better. With the roads, I mean literally there are asphalt roads through there now, there won’t be those dirt paths, so your shoes will be a lot cleaner.” He continues to emphasize the significance of returning to the show and how important it will be. However, for a change, it seems the exhibitors have been able to summarize it better than he is usually able to. “As companies shifted to work from home and people embraced the changes, most landscape professionals found they were busier than ever,” says Chris Vogtman, director of marketing, Toro. “People turned to outdoor spaces to connect with friends and family, and demand for landscape services soared. That’s why it’s more important than ever for the green industry to get back to GIE+Expo to connect with one another on the state of the industry while exploring all the new offerings out there. As we all know, innovation is what drives the industry forward, and we can’t wait to share some of our new innovations at the show that will enable professionals to grow and thrive.” Ironically, despite the challenging year, even Kiser knows that the only thing that is likely going to keep potential attendees away is that they’re so busy this year. “It’s a great problem to have,” he says. “We’ll take that all day long where our attendees are busy.”

major part of the GIE+EXPO is the introduction of new products. Contractors and dealers can browse newly released equipment and “try before they buy” in the outdoor demo area. Annually, the show lends itself to being the showcase for the latest innovations within the green industry. With no show being held in 2020, the anticipation is high that the manufacturers will be pulling out all the stops for the upcoming event in Louisville Oct. 20-22. “While technology has been creeping into the green industry for some time now, we expect it will be a driving force going forward,” says Chris Vogtman, director of marketing, Toro. “Coming out of the show, we anticipate a greater emphasis on applying technology to solve industry challenges like labor scarcity and energy concerns.” Evolution of battery-powered equipment, robotics and interconnected devices are anticipated to be major highlights of the 2021 show.

“I think you’re going to see a lot of battery-powered products as a lot more manufacturers have pushed into that space,” says Kris Kiser, managing partner of GIE+EXPO and OPEI president. STIHL, Husqvarna, Toro, Milwaukee Tool, EGO, Briggs & Stratton, Greenworks and many more are among those pushing into or active in the battery-powered market at both the handheld outdoor equipment level and beyond. “Simply put, battery-powered tools are the future of our industry,” says Scott Sittler, marketing manager, professional products Husqvarna. “At Husqvarna, we’re excited about this opportunity. We have a long history of innovation and look forward to continuing to push new technologies to develop equipment that continues to deliver ease of use, convenience, and performance for industry professionals.” Murray Bishop, director of sales at STIHL Inc. notes that many municipalities and residential areas are requiring low-to no exhaust emissions and lower noise levels so the market must adapt to meet those needs. “While battery products certainly grow in popularity, we continue to enhance our professional gas product range improving power while lowering weight, reducing emissions and improving serviceability all while delivering the quality and dependability that has become synonymous with the STIHL brand,” he says. Battery or electric power also is expected to continue to evolve in larger pieces of equipment including mowers and beyond. More prototypes of such vehicles are anticipated to be on display giving a glimpse of what’s to come. Overall, technology seems to be on the rise at GIE+EXPO 2021. “The landscaping business

is becoming increasingly more sophisticated with high-tech tools like robotic lawn mowers and apps to manage business operations and fleet management from a mobile device,” Bishop says. Jim Clayman, vice president of marketing for Aspire Products, ServiceTitan notes there is some interesting technology being prototyped by different vendors for robotic mowers for commercial use. Although they’ve been around for nearly 20 years, the robotic mowers are now on their third or fourth generation. “I think there’s a recognition that there is a market here for that stuff,” Kiser says. Meanwhile, Clayman notes that on the software technology side, many contractors still have not upgraded their processes and business practices to leverage available technology such as Aspire to transform how they manage their business. He anticipates many will be checking out Aspire and other vendors to learn more about what such systems can do for their business. Others see an ongoing trend toward larger, more powerful, and productive equipment that is easy to use. “The landscape industry is in the midst of a labor shortage, but demand for work isn’t slowing down,” says Brant Kukuk, Ditch Witch compact equipment product manager. “In fact, demand for work has never been higher for many landscapers, some are working on 2-3 jobs per day. Manufacturers are designing machines with higher operating capacity, which reduces the number of loads needed on many projects and, in turn, will help improve efficiency for smaller, busy crews.” There will be a vast array of products unveiled at GIE+EXPO 2021. Many of which we are not even aware of yet. Here’s some insight at what a handful of the exhibiting manufacturers are debuting or highlighting at this year’s show.

Aspire Software

Aspire Software was recently acquired by ServiceTitan, the

largest software provider for those in the home service trades. “We’ll definitely be talking about how the infusion of resources and capital from ServiceTitan will benefit our current and future customers with accelerated delivery of new features and functions in the future,” says Jim Clayman, vice president of marketing for Aspire Products, ServiceTitan . As for a specific “new” product, he notes that Aspire continually enhances its business management system that is built for commercial landscapers. “We will definitely be highlighting new features that are coming on board, including enhanced features for managing snow removal services,” Clayman says. “We will also highlight new features and enhancements that will be made available to smaller contractors who in the past may not have been large enough to take advantage of Aspire’s software platform.”

Ditch Witch

Ditch Witch will be showcasing the enhanced C24X walk-behind trencher at GIE+EXPO. According to Brant Kukuk, compact equipment product manager, Ditch Witch, the updated trencher boasts a new Honda engine designed to improve performance, simplify maintenance, and offer easier operation for contractors. “Specifically, the new engine is fuelinjected rather than carbureted and offers more head shaft horsepower to the ground, both of which improve performance,” Kukuk says. “The enhanced C24X also has eliminated the choke for easier starting, has a throttleby-wire for easier maintenance and has an updated auger shaft support which allows bricks and rocks to pass, improving productivity of the machine.” The company’s two classes of stand-on skid steers, the mini (SK600, SK800 and SK1550) and full-size models (SK3000) will also be on display. Kukuk says the machines are powered by engines ranging from 24.8-hp to 44-hp, offering up to 34.5 hp to the attachment depending on the model.

Exmark

At GIE+EXPO 2021, Exmark will show a breadth of new 2022 products focused on raising the bar of productivity and lowering total cost of ownership for their customers according to Exmark director of marketing Jamie Briggs. “We’ll launch Exmark’s most productive zero-turn riding mower yet, all-new stand-on mowers and innovations that reduce in-season maintenance and downtime for contractors,” Briggs says. “We’re also introducing new features into existing mower models.” He also says that guests will also see a host of new products Exmark is working on for tomorrow as well as concepts of innovations that the company expects will shape the commercial lawn care market well into the future.

“We are proud to offer one of the broadest ranges of diverse handheld OPE products in the industry and will provide attendees of the show an exciting preview of the products and programs that we will be offering in 2022 and the coming years,” STIHL Inc. director of sales Murray Bishop. Specifically, he referenced the continued support of the demand for battery-powered equipment with the new STIHL professional battery 135 platform. The 135 platform includes loop and bike handle trimmers, a KombiMotor, extended reach hedge trimmers, extended reach pole pruners, and edgers. Bishop says the 135 platform delivers true commercial-grade power and

performance comparable to gasolinepowered tools, all with zero exhaust emissions and low noise. The units have many of the same drive and cutting components as used in the gas-powered STIHL products. In addition, he notes that a number of the STIHL professional battery products are already California Zero Emissions Equipment (ZEE) certified as well as the American Green Zone Alliance Field Test Certified (AFTC) allowing landscapers to operate even under the most stringent emissions and durability guidelines. “We are also excited to be providing pros a sneak peek at the innovative charging solutions STIHL will make available in 2022,” Bishop says. “At this year’s show, attendees will get a firsthand look at our robust product

STORM CLEAN UP.

SAFELY DONE.

T

he headlines read: “Destruction across Eastern Iowa.” It was not a hurricane. It was not a tornado. It was a derecho. This derecho delivered 100 mph winds (there is no eye) in a line over a wide swatch of land. This derecho flipped vehicles and damaged trees. Lots of trees. Flannery Trucking, a company of diverse offerings, was contracted to come in and clear the right-of-way behind this deracho’s destructive path. This meant removing trees that were uprooted and damaged by the storm, or were now precariously positioned to possible cause more property damage.

In the past, when Flannery contracted out for storm clean up, the ‘usual way’ of getting the work done was climbing trees, using ropes to drop heavy limbs and, when possible, use bucket trucks. “We started the clean up doing what we always have done with ropes and bucket trucks,” said Richard Marvin, Flannery’s point person on this particular clean up. Because of the large geographic area to be cleared, it was soon clear to the team on the ground there needed to be a better, more efficient way to accomplish what they contracted to do. “We went looking for a more efficient and safer way to increase our production,” Marvin said, “as well as get in and get out of the way of the homeowners. Even though at the time we were not sure what we were looking for.” Right of way work has specific requirements of its equipment. “We needed a machine that had rubber tires, travel speed and the reach needed to remove trees from the top down,” said Jamey Flannery owner of Flannery Trucking.

STRING TRIMMERS

T

he primary use of a weedwhacker or as they’re known in the industry, a string trimmer is to trim the grass to a certain height in those hard-to-reach areas that a lawn mower might not be able to fit. How complicated could this simple piece of equipment possibly be?

What Contractors Want and Expect in a String Trimmer

Tony Buxton, senior product manager for Milwaukee Tool believes a landscape professional should be looking for a string trimmer that delivers the power to take on demanding applications, a quick throttle response, and a well-balanced tool. “A variable speed trigger gives users control over the power output, making it possible to tackle both demanding applications and sensitive areas,” he says. “Having a large cutting

swath is important when working with larger areas, providing the user greater maneuverability and reduced fatigue.” Andrew Johnson. STIHL Inc. product manager notes that overall power, durability, performance, and dependability ultimately remain at the top of the list. “Optimal power-to-weight ratios are essential for professional users,” he says. “Manufacturers are keeping this in mind, designing products that are both powerful, yet lightweight.” In addition, Johnson says reduced vibration, fuel efficiency, comfort and safety features are important factors in choosing products as well. “Our professional trimmers and brush cutters are also built for comfort, featuring anti-vibration technology and various harnesses for comfortable operation and reduced operator fatigue,” he says. Continuing, Johnson notes that

gas vs. battery power should also be considered as an option depending on the application and usage. ECHO product manager Mike Taylor agrees that string trimmers make up a larger category with widely varying levels of performance and durability that span the needs from entry-level homeowners to heavy duty professionals. “Prior to making a new string trimmer purchase, professionals should ensure that the unit(s) that they are looking at are a good fit for their expected usage,” he says. “Focusing on professional level equipment will ensure that the end users purchase equipment that meets daily needs along with the delivering the longevity of a unit that their business requires to keep equipment costs down and employees working.” Taylor notes that professionals usually require a more powerful trimmer to

cut quickly and efficiently when the user needs it to perform. Some commercial grade models also offer a high torque version that provides greater torque at the cutting head, enabling faster cutting in heavy weeds. Other areas of interest to consider according to Taylor include the following: • Ease of serviceability. “Many professionals service their own equipment and finding models with tool-less access to air filters, spark plugs, and fuel filters will save the user time and money over the life of the equipment, Taylor says. “Buying a model with an easy-to-reload trimmer head will also decrease downtime in the field.” • Overall cutting swath. “All other things being equal, a larger cutting swath enables the user to cut the required material in less time,” he says.

• Over molded handles and trigger provide extended comfort over a day of use. • Vibration reduction mount create a more comfortable experience over the long day and will wear less on the user keeping productivity high. Also, multi-use tool heads or attachment systems are becoming more common within the outdoor power equipment market. “It ultimately depends on the enduser’s needs,” Johnson says. “For most pros, adding a multi-use tool or trimmer gearbox attachments to a fleet can be very beneficial. Giving users the option to change out gearbox attachments allows trimmers to function with more power and versatility, which will enable users to get more use out of their equipment.” Buxton notes that the attachments are ideal for less demanding applications where the tool may not be needed for extended use. “There has been an increasing trend in attachment systems across the outdoor equipment market,” he says. “ Investing in a string trimmer with an attachment system gives the user more versatility for a range of applications at a lower cost. We have seen professionals use attachments as supplementary tools, leveraging the equipment for less frequent applications. For example, a professional would use a hedge trimming attachment for a property with only a few shrubs rather than needing to bring along a dedicated unit, also reducing the storage footprint in a trailer.”

Equipment features

Selection of handle shape depends on the task at hand and often end user preference. Generally, straight shaft trimmers, are the preferred choice for most professional landscapers due to increased reach and cutting torque from the gear reduction. However, Buxton suggests there is some regional divide with U.S. professionals favoring the handle and trigger in an inline design, versus Europe and Asia where there appears to be more of a preference for a bike handle style. The bike handle often involved use of

shoulder straps and is intended for use over extended periods. Johnson notes that users can add harnesses or trimmer straps to help distribute the load from their hands to their shoulders. “These accessories help reduce operator fatigue and make it easier to use trimmers and brush cutters for extended periods,” he says. “Not only do trimmer straps and harnesses help minimize the strain associated with extended use, but they can also be required gear depending on the job.” Per ANSI standards, a double shoulder harness is required when using a circular saw blade on a brush cutter. “Manufacturers typically use a softer rubber over mold on the handles for vibration reduction as well as improved user comfort over a long day,” Taylor says. Unlike some things, bigger is really better when it comes to string trimmer line. The general rule is that the trimmer line’s thickness does determine a trimmer’s performance in terms of clearing power and run time. Manufacturers offer a variety of different diameters and shapes to accommodate various cutting scenarios. “Users should determine which trim line to get based on their application and performance needs,” Buxton says. In determining preferred diameter, Taylor says it is important to refer to the unit’s owner’s manual for specific diameter and designs acceptable to the unit and trimmer head. Most professional landscapers utilize a .095 in. diameter line for residential properties and a heavier gauge .105 or .130 in diameter line for heavy clearing. “The design of the cutting line will affect the performance of the unit,” Taylor says. “Some trimmer lines are designed for aggressive trimming while others are designed to be quieter for use in residential areas or on hospital or school grounds. Thicker trimmer line increases the load on the engine on a gas unit or the motor on an electric unit, resulting in a decrease in overall runtime of the unit, and often also resulting in decreased trimmer head speed.” Johnson notes that while line thick-

ness with trimmers does play a role in durability, so does the flexibility. “Stiff, brittle line tends to fragment and break/deteriorate faster than newer/ fresh trimmer line,” he says. “Fresh trimmer line every season will help increase working times and life expectancy of trimmer head spools without having to reload the spool as often. If the trimmer line is dry or brittle, users can place the spool of trimmer line in water for up to 24 hours.”

Buxton says with any string trimmer, replacing the trim line and trimmer head is a part of regular care. “The ability to reload trimmer line quickly and easily is a very important feature to every user of string trimmer,” Taylor adds. “Trimmer line will need to be reloaded often, and an easy-to-use trimmer head that can take the hassle out of refilling your trimmer line is a valuable feature for both a homeowner and professional.” The frequency of use and type of application determines how often these parts need to be replaced. “Taking proper care of your equipment is incredibly important and can preserve the life of your trimmer,” Johnson says. “Not only will this lead to less downtime on the job, but properly maintained equipment will pay off in the long run and can help you save money.” For example, gas-powered string trimmers require regular engine maintenance. Air filters, spark plugs, carburetors, and recoils are all components that need to be maintained and replaced regularly to keep the engine running properly. Easy ability to locate and replace these common items is a consideration. Conversely, battery-powered equipment alleviates some pain points, needing no engine maintenance. ○ Ease of serviceability is among the considerations when looking at string trimmers. Models with tool-less access to air filters, spark plugs, fuel filters or battery-power help save time and money over the life of the unit.

What’s all that noise

There’s no question that there have been major developments over the past five years in battery-powered outdoor equipment. Many units are running with the same amount of power as the gasoline-powered lines of equipment. The benefits of battery-powered tools are clear: no mixing of gas and oil, no pull starts, reduced noise, no emissions, and no engine maintenance. “By having a developmental focus on professional landscaping needs, manufacturers have made great strides towards increased RPM, larger cutting swaths, and extended runtime,” Buxton says. “With these advancements, we have seen a trend of professionals shifting their equipment purchases to include a mix of gas and battery-powered solutions.” More government regulations are

“We are seeing major advancements in battery-powered solutions in this industry, and some are viable replacements for current gas-powered tools,” Buxton says. “There has been an increasing number of professionals adopting this technology, embracing the ease of use and low maintenance quality of the tools.” in general, as suggested by STIHL’s Johnson, a few key maintenance points include: • Prior to use, visually inspecting the trimmer to gauge its overall condition and check for issues such as leaks. • Clean or change the air filter regularly. • Users should regularly check the fasteners, ensuring they are snug and replacing any that may be missing or damaged. • For gas-powered trimmers, be sure to always use the highest grade of gasoline. STIHL recommends high-octane fuel mix or a mixture of high-quality gasoline with no more than 10% ethanol and two-stroke air cooled engine oil. • Use your service dealer to assist with troubleshooting common issues and help ensure that proper maintenance is performed on your equipment.

approved on reduced noise and emissions. “By utilizing both gas and battery-powered tools, the professional market is gaining a better understanding of how the technology can benefit them now and more so in the future when it has advanced enough to fully replace their gas units,” Buxton says. Although the units are getting more powerful and battery technology is improving, resulting in improved run times compared to older battery-powered trimmers Taylor says that most professional landscapers are still purchasing gas-powered trimmers, and battery technology still needs significant improvement before it can match the power and run time of gas.

LIGHTNING Strikes with ELECTRIC Pickup TECHNOLOGY

Ford’s electric F-150 combines a mobile power supply, office and high-performance vehicle in familiar packaging.

L

ightning is a legacy name for Ford Motor Company. It harkens back to the SVT F-150 Lightning, which was unveiled in 1992, with the second generation introduced in 1994. “The Guinness Book of World Records called Lightning the world’s fastest production truck,” says Kumar Galhotra, president, Americas and International Markets Group, Ford Motor Company. “Today, the Lightning legacy lives on as the F-150 Lightning, a new entrant in Ford’s most important franchise. We gave great thought before naming this vehicle Lightning, following in the footsteps of the iconic SVT F-150 Lightning. Much like its namesake, the F-150 Lightning is a truck that “reinvents the way we look at trucks. It’s powerful, lightning quick and

zero emissions,” says Galhotra.

Performance is Still King

In the pickup market, performance sells. It is no different with electric trucks. “The best thing about electric vehicles is the instantaneous torque,” says Jasen Turnbull, F-150 Lightning marketing manager. The claimed performance from the full-time four-wheel drive is impressive. “The F-150 Lightning hits 60 mph in the mid-four seconds with an available extended range battery,” says Darren Palmer, North America BEV general manager. “It has a targeted 775 ft.-lbs. of nearly

instantaneous torque, the most of an F-150 ever. It reacts to your command in a fraction of a second. With no gear changes and a low center of gravity, it’s a super smooth and engaging drive experience. In short, the F-150 Lightning delivers a driving experience that you have never felt before.” Capability drove the development process. “Anything that we did, we maintained that goal of it needs to be a truck first and then we are using electrification to amplify the driving experience and capabilities,” says Turnbull. Range anxiety is a common concern.

When customers tow or haul, the real-time range calculator compensates for weather and grade to provide an accurate range regardless of conditions.

Ford Motor Company

“One of the first things that came out of our customer’s minds is what is the range when I tow? We give the customer a real-time constantly improving calculator,” Turnbull points out. When customers tow or haul, the calculator compensates for weather and grade. “We are going to give them an accurate range, no matter the conditions. “The F-150 Lightning is powered by the largest lithium-ion battery pack Ford has ever put into a vehicle, delivering a combination of range and power you couldn’t have imagined before,” says Palmer. “We offer two battery back options – an extended range battery targeting an estimated EPA range of 300 miles and a standard range battery that targets 230 miles of EPA estimated range. The battery utilizes state-of-the-art lithium-ion pouch battery cells with Nickel Manganese Cobalt cathodes. “The cell energy in our F-150 was significantly increased, at the same time dramatically reducing our cobalt content over our previous designs,” says Gitanjli McRoy, manager, electrified propulsion systems

engineering. “The team had to be really creative in packaging to ensure that we could maximize energy, minimize weight and deliver robustness for our customers.” Mounting the battery was done with a mechanically isolated structure to enable a robust design for off-road use. “The battery design includes a state-of-theart liquid cooling system. Through the development, we beefed up our cooling system and multiple components to be able to cope with the toughest of the driving ordeals, and it’s for the whole life of the vehicle,” says McRoy. Charging was also a focus. “Our F-150 Lightning is introducing two onboard AC charging system,” says McRoy. “Our standard range uses an 11.3-Kw single charger and the extended range uses a dual charger to deliver the fastest possible charge time to the limits of SAE charging standards.”

More Than Transportation

The F-150 Lightning is more than transportation. “Really, it is the ultimate portable power source,” says Ryan O’Gorman, energy services lead. It can actually serve as a backup power source for your home. “If your F-150 Lightning is plugged in when a power outage occurs, intelligent backup power will automatically kick in to power your home. When power is restored, the truck automatically reverts to charging its battery,” O’Gorman explains. “No additional input from the customer will be required, making this experience totally seamless. With the ability to off board up to 9.6 Kw of energy, [the truck] can provide for up to three days [of backup power to your house] on a full charge.” Mobile power is also available to run tools. “The F-150 Lightning offers 9.6 Kw of Pro Power Onboard, up from 7.2 Kw available for the F-150 hybrid, using up to 11 outlets in the truck bed, cabin interior and Mega

n.

www.greenindustrypros.com

GIP0921_44-51_SpecialReport.indd 45

Power Frunk,” says O’Gorman. The truck distributes power in a smart way. “If the truck battery level falls below a third of its total range, customers will get a Ford Pass notification and get to decide whether they want to keep powering their tools or accessories or reserve that energy for travel,” says O’Gorman. “Customers can even set the truck to stop using Pro Power Onboard if the battery approaches a distance that is to the nearest charging station. “The F-150 Lightning is reinventing the idea of vehicle power,” he adds.

Lightning Utilizes Hands-free Solution Ford has recently announced its Blue Cruise hands-free driving solution. “Now, F-150 Lightning offers a true hands-free driving experience available with Blue Cruise,” says Palmer. “Blue Cruise allows hands-free driving on many highways across the U.S. and Canada.” It takes over driving in situations such as traffic jams and along highways to reduce stress. The system uses a driver-facing camera to ensure you keep your eyes on the road. “It works even when you are wearing sunglasses,” notes Palmer.

Driver Interface Simplifies Tasks

“The F-150 Lightning is the first F-150 to offer SYNC 4A, a sleek and modern interface designed for the vehicle’s massive 15 1/2-in. touchscreen

SYNC 4A employs natural voice controls, cloud-connected navigation and wireless access to Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and SYNC AppLink apps. In addition, it allows drivers to create their own profiles, add their own pictures and have their vehicle preferences automatically saved. “The system also gets to know you,” says Dakroub. “It will have your profile and settings loaded as you approach the vehicle. When you opt in, it also learns your habits. And it makes suggestions for your regular activities.” The truck has the capability to get better over time by utilizing its built-in modem for wireless software updates. “Wireless software updates can be completed in under two minutes and some can be scheduled at your convenience,” says Dakroub. “You can set overnight update and the vehicle will be updated in the morning.”

Frunk Adds Versatility

What is a Frunk? It is basically a large front truck located where an internal combustion engine would typically be located. “Our Mega Power Frunk, the largest front truck

among all electric vehicles, has incredible versatility,” says Turnbull. “There’s a new opportunity to use the space where the traditional engine used to be,” says Nancy Reppanhagen, F-150 Mega Power Frunk. “We used that space to create the largest front trunk in the industry with 400 liters of volume and 400 lbs. of payload. You can fit one checked bag plus two carry-ons. You could fit two full sets of golf clubs. Essentially, we’re giving you your cabin back.” The Frunk does include a drain hole so it can be washed out. There are also D-rings on the floor and cargo hooks on the side for secure cargo storage. Electrical outlets and a USB outlet also allow the space to be used as a portable workstation.

The Mobile Office

The F-150 Lightning converts to offer a unique office space. “We created this console that would flip over and become a work space,” says Kenny Moore, F-150 Lightning exterior design manager. “In order to do that, the gear shift lever folds all of the way down flat.” This creates a user-friendly environment where you are no longer trying to write with a notepad balanced on the steering wheel or on the center console.

The importance of F-Series success for Ford Motor Company cannot be overstated. The F-Series alone generates more than $42 billion annually,

according to Galhorta. To put this into perspective, this is more revenue than major companies such as McDonalds, Nike, Coca-Cola and Netflix generate. “Ford is committed to leading in electrification in our areas of strength,” says Galhorta. “We are investing at least $22 billion globally in electrification through 2025. Maintenance Tips W

To Keep Your ZTR Running

hen equipment, any equipment, does not work as it should, it is frustrating. It can mean costly repairs and then perhaps the worst part, lost hours and productivity. Professionals need their zero-turn mowers (ZTR) to be just as reliable and ready to go as any other machine in the fleet. One of the best ways to ensure dependable operation and good performance from a ZTR is a commitment to routine maintenance. These are the five areas to watch when building a basic zero-turn mower maintenance program. Note: Before proceeding with any maintenance, always consult the operator’s manual, wear appropriate safety gear, park the mower on a flat surface, and ensure the engine is off and cool.

1. Air Filter

Dirty air filters do more than hamper a mower’s performance, they create inefficient operation that wastes fuel. Worse yet, if they allow dirt and other debris to enter the engine, the result can be permanent damage. Check the air filter at least monthly to assess its condition. Those who work in dry, dusty, or dirtier conditions may want to do this step more frequently, as well as those who are at the height of their busy season and are logging more daily hours on their ZTRs. Furthermore, consider seasonality when establishing expectations for the air filter’s lifespan. Fall especially can be a drier time of year, with added tasks like bagging leaves

putting greater stress on the filter. It is not uncommon for professionals to check the air filter weekly, even daily, during these peak times. When it is time to change the filter (or filters, as some ZTRs have dual elements), first clear away any debris from the air intake area. A paper air filter can be gently tapped to remove excess debris, but never blow air on or attempt to clean a paper air filter. Instead, change the air filter as needed. Insert a new, clean air filter and take care to ensure no debris enters the engine.

2. Fuel Filter and Stabilizer

Like the air filter, a clean fuel filter keeps harmful particles from entering and damaging the engine and aids in efficient fuel consumption. The best time to change a fuel filter varies by ZTR so it is best to consult the operator’s

manual as a guide, then check regularly, as appropriate. Another factor that again affects the timing of filter changes is how much fuel is consumed, or how much the mower runs. The fuel filter may need to be changed often for companies that put a lot of hours on their ZTRs, but it may be a task that does not need as frequent attention for fleets that have other mowers sharing the workload. When it is time to change a fuel filter, begin by placing a drain pan under it. Note the arrow on the existing fuel filter and the direction it is pointing. The new filter must be attached so that the arrow is pointing in the same direction. Inspect the fuel filter and connecting hoses, looking for cracks or signs of excessive wear. Next, loosen the hose clamps and move them away from the filter. Disconnect the hoses from the old filter, then quickly reattach the new filter, making sure it is facing the correct way. Finally, reposition the hose clamps to ensure the filter is secure. Start the mower and let the engine run for a few minutes while checking for any leaks. Do not neglect this important step when replacing a fuel filter: dispose of it in an environmentally responsible way. Most filters need to drain for a day, then disposal will vary according to local laws. Also, any spilled fuel and fuel-soaked towels should also be discarded in a proper manner. Also, fuel-related, it is a good practice to add fuel stabilizer at certain times during the year. For cold-weather climates, stabilizer is common just ahead of winter months, in prep for ZTRs to sit idle for longer periods of time. However, this practice is smart for hot-weather climates as well, as stabilizer can prevent fuel from going bad any time it is expected that the mower will not be running for a while.

3. Engine Oil

Perhaps the most basic step of any equipment preventative maintenance is a daily oil check. While a homeowner only needs to change their mower engine oil annually, high-use

commercial ZTRs demand more frequent changes. As with the air filter, the environment will dictate how often oil changes are required, with dry, dusty, and dirty conditions demanding more frequent changes. An oil change is quick and easy for most professional equipment owners and operators. However, for those who are newer to the process or need a simple refresher, here is a quick stepby-step for how to change engine oil. Begin by placing a drain pan under the oil plug, along with a few towels down near the filter, and loosen the dipstick. Next, drain the oil. Many ZTRs have quick-drain valves. Replace the oil plug, then wipe down and clean the area. Replace the engine oil with a fresh fill and finally, replace the dipstick. Run the engine for a minute, then shut it off and allow ample cool-down time. While the engine is cooling off,

4. Transmission Times Two

One may think that all commercial lawn mowers have virtually the same maintenance requirements. That is not far off from the truth. However, one thing that sets ZTRs apart from other commercial mowers are dual transmissions. Therefore, extra care to address the transmissions warrants one more step on the maintenance checklist. Two of the first three tasks noted above, air filter and oil, are essentially the same process on the

clean any spilled oil and dispose of the old oil and oil-soaked towels in a proper manner. Check with local regulations and, ideally, look for recycling options. There is one final step before checking this job as complete. When the engine is cooled, check the oil level. Over-filling can damage the spark plug and lead to engine start issues.

with others less frequent but still top of mind. Most of these involve simple checks, with larger efforts only on an as-needed basis. Start every day by checking the mower’s tires and tire pressure. This is an important step for ZTRs, as low tire pressure on one side can throw off the transmissions and cause the mower to drift or pull to one side. Inadequate tire pressure also affects the quality of cut. Noting a low tire at the start of the day can uncover a bigger problem, like a puncture, that

transmission as they are on the engine. Be diligent about checking the transmission’s filters and oil and changing when needed.

can be taken care of immediately. Another simple morning check is the bagger, if one is being used. As mentioned earlier, fall is a particularly important time to check certain things more often, the bagger being one item to add to that list. Look for rips, holes, or other damage that would warrant replacement. Professionals who are covering a lot of acreage may even want to check the bagger multiple times a day, such as after every large job. When starting up the mower each day, stop for a moment to listen. Every operator, whether veteran or newer to the job, can hear when something does not sound right. This can signal it is time to check the idlers or bearings. Three things contribute to good airflow and quality of cut: a clean mower deck, good-condition belts, and sharp blades. At the end of each

o

day, inspect the mower deck for excess debris to clear. As needed, remove the mower deck as instructed in the owner’s manual and clean the bottom side of the deck. Once a week, inspect the drive belt for worn or cracked areas and replace the belt, if needed. Also, remove and check the blade, looking for any signs of damage or excessive wear. Depending on the condition, a blade can be replaced or may just need to be sharpened. Many professionals find the blade to be one of the most important areas to check and will clean and sharpen on a weekly schedule.

Finally, give the ZTR a quick cleaning at the end of each day. This does not mean a full wash and dry, getting into every nook and cranny and polishing it up to look shiny and new. Simply blow off the machine with a handheld blower or compressor. Pay extra attention to the transmission area to prevent excess build up of debris. Although it may sound timeconsuming, basic maintenance is one of the easiest tasks, most cost-effective plans, and best

investments professionals can make in their zero-turn mower. By giving it some simple, routine care, the ZTR will pay back with years of fast, dependable operation and beautifully cut grass. James Rogholt is service manager for RDO Equipment Co. in Fergus Falls, MN.

LAWN CARE

By Ryan Whisner

STEPS TO RECLAIM THE TURF

and Restore a Customer’s Lawn

E

nsuring that a customer lawn remains in that lush, vibrant condition is generally a part of professional turf managers duties. Sometimes those services elevate to some extensive renovation of the property to ensure the health of the lawn. Alyssa Cain, turf product manager for Barenburg USA offers some insight on the steps for a contractor to consider when going through the process of consideration of renovating a customer’s property and restoring the lawn. • Determine whether the customer’s current stand has the potential to be salvaged (greater than 50% green, healthy growth) or if they have need to consider a complete renovation of the area. • If they have mostly healthy grass (greater than 70%), there is the option to troubleshoot what they currently have with a fertilizer application. Cain says to promote this quick spurt of growth, apply about 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet on the existing grass. If you are using a quick-release fertilizer, you may go with a 50/50 blend of a quick-release and slow-release fertilizer (ex, half urea and half poly-coated urea) to ensure the

58 GREEN INDUSTRY PROS

GIP0921_58-61_LawnCare.indd 58

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

plant is getting a little help now as well as some in the future as the fertilizer breaks down in the environment. • If there is some healthy grass (greater than 50%) but it is growing unevenly, this may call for overseeding. “When this is the case, you may decide to dethatch to get rid of the dead material, rake the seedbed to make it an even surface as well as removing the old debris, then use a drop spreader to apply the new seed on this prepared area,” Cain says. “Overseeding rates are usually a little higher than that of a new seeding because this accounts for the seed settling in unintended spaces, and not making soil contact for germination to occur.” She says you may decide to do another light raking once the seed is down to ensure it settles on the soil. Once seeded, this can be lightly top dressed with mulch or peatmoss to introduce more organic matter in the system and retain moisture on the seeds throughout germination. • If there is very little grass worth saving in the current stand, this will call for a complete renovation. She says the first step in this process is to remove everything that is currently present and prepare the area for new seed. This is typically done with an

application of a non-selective herbicide like glyphosate. Glyphosate damage can be seen within one week and plant mortification will occur within about two weeks. “Once the turf is sufficiently necrotic, use a dethatcher to remove the dead debris,” Cain says. “This may be done over several passes in different directions to remove as much dead material as possible. Rake the dead debris off the area and determine if the area is mainly soil.” If there is still a lot of dead material, she suggesting running the dethatcher over the area again and reassessing. At this point, a soil sample may be taken to determine the current soil’s pH and nutrient content. This will be the best way to determine whether a pre-plant fertilizer or soil amendments should be made. Cain says the goal is to have a higher nitrogen content and to keep the pH between 6 and 8. This is

irrigation needs. There are plenty of extension articles published on watering your lawn based on species, so please refer to these for accurate rates for your region.

Seed or sod

Cain says seed and sod are both viable options for creating a new stand of grass, so it ultimately depends on the time of the project and maintenance. For example, if there were a large tract housing development that was ready to put new houses on the market and growing in a new stand of grass would take too much time, she notes that sod is a perfect option. Sod will give the immediate satisfaction of a lawn while

where the most micronutrients will be available to the plant. Make the necessary amendments, create an even surface for the seed to settle with a rake, and then seed according to the recommended rates for the species or blend. Determine the species they currently have and whether it works for them, or will another species fit their need better? If they like what they have, keep with it, but if there is another species that thrives better in their region, make efforts to sway them that direction for a more manageable turf. Once seeded, a light layer of peatmoss or mulch can be spread on top of the seed to ensure seed-to-soil contact and retain moisture throughout germination. An optional step would be to use a heavy roller on top of this area to compact the seed into the ground, this helps keep the seed in place until it takes root and stays in place. “Lastly, you will immediately begin the irrigation process by watering lightly enough to moisten the soil and not cause water run-off,” Cain says. “The customer will then need to maintain the watering practice of light and frequent bursts (1015 minutes 2-3 times per day) to maintain soil moisture during germination. Once there is visible germination, if the weather is not drying out the seedbed too much, irrigation can be reduced after ~3 weeks until there is full establishment (after 2-3 months).” When mowing can take place, and this is where you can reassess your

grass seed takes longer to establish. Additionally, Cain says when purchasing sod, weeds are of little-to-no concern because those producing the sod

60 GREEN INDUSTRY PROS

are dedicated to maintaining the utmost quality. However, when establishing a lawn from seed, she says sometimes there are dormant seeds within the soil

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

that make an appearance during the grow-in process, or depending on the quality of the purchased seed, there may be weeds present in the bag that you will introduce into the system. “Purchasing quality seed from a reputable supplier is key to a healthy turf stand,” Cain says. Continuing, she adds that when sod is cut at a sod farm and transported to its final destination, one can see the contiguous root system creating a mat-like appearance. These are essentially “free-floating” roots that need to find a home in soil. To promote rooting that anchors the sod to the soil, cultural practices like fertilization, irrigation, and mowing are key. After sod installation, it is vital for customers to keep up on these practices and call you back if they are noticing turf grass mortality. “When starting a turf stand from seed, you must be wary of your (customers’) irrigation and fertilization practices,” Cain says. “It is a more hands-on and timeconsuming process, but you can almost ‘train’ the grass to be maintained at a certain height, watered at a certain rate,

and even grow in difficult spots at a potentially lower price point than sod.” If you select seeding and you know which company you want to purchase from, one of the best ways to narrow down your species is to contact the company directly if that is not generally your area of expertise. “They will help you determine what species of turf grass will grow and thrive in your given area,” she says. Alternatively, he/she suggests a lot of universities fund agricultural extension offices that are filled with experts knowledgeable on local plant species. Grasses are generally divided into warm- and cool-season species. Coolseason grasses are generally grown in areas where freezing temperatures are normal through the winter months, while the warm-season grasses flourish in regions with mild to hot temperatures.

In the dark

Multiple factors must be considered when restoring a customer’s property. Shade can determine how any plant, including grass grows. According to Cain, plants use a series of red and far-red light, and plants will absorb red light while far-red light is reflected. This reflection of far-red light from one plant onto another neighboring plant is how it determines closeness. She says it is similar to when you are waiting in a long line and you can tell how close someone is by seeing or hearing them, far-red light sensing is the same idea. When ample far-red light is being reflected from one plant to another, that is telling the plants that they are close together and are in competition for sunlight, nutrients, and water. “This feeling of competition will then affect how the plant will respond and grow,” Cain says. “This usually leads to limited growth in the plant. When growth is slowed, this makes conditions perfect for weeds or diseases to make an appearance in these shady areas.” To combat this stunt in growth and future infestations, he/she says it is vital to plant shade-tolerant species or cultivars in these areas. Fine fescues,

especially creeping red and Chewings fescues, are notorious for their ability to thrive in the shade and in low fertility soils. Blends containing these species or improved varieties of Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, and sometimes Bermudagrass or bentgrass will bring this important attribute to your customer’s stand. “Once planted in the shade, it is important to keep a close eye on your irrigation, because too much will lead to disease and moss encroachment,” Cain says. “When disease pressure and moss encroachment are high, you may need to aerate your soil, amend with sand or another porous soil to improve drainage, and reseed the area.”

Watering is key

Whether you select seed or sod, providing your customer with the proper instructions to maintain irrigation on the lawn is critical. She says when watering a new stand of sod, it is important to do one deep watering (0.75 in. to 1.5 in.) right after installation, and then water at a lower rate (0.1 in. to 0.25in.) daily thereafter. Cain notes the single deep watering will allow the water to soak through the mat-like root system of the sod and penetrate down to the native soil. However, she also says the rate at which the first irrigation is applied depends on the outside temperature. If the outside temperature is 95 degrees or warmer, irrigate at the 1.5 in. rate, but if you have cool weather, the 0.75 in. will do the trick. The thick root system will allow moisture to remain, not evaporating out too quickly, and then the lower rates of irrigation will maintain the moisture through the rooting process. Cain says you or your customers should maintain this lower rate of daily watering for about two weeks, and then gradually reduce to maintain the species of turfgrass at the recommended watering rate. “Overirrigating will cause water to pool and may lead to root rot, eventually killing your new sod,” Cain says. “On the other hand, deficient irrigation will dry

www.greenindustrypros.com

GIP0921_58-61_LawnCare.indd 61

out the roots and kill the plant, making it difficult to recover. It is important to find the balance between the two, to maintain a happy, healthy stand.” When establishing a new stand from seed, it is a somewhat similar process. She says the seedbed should be prepared by evening out the soil and applying any herbicides or starter fertilizers. Some like to amend the soil with mulch, peatmoss, or a better draining soil (sand), and then begin the seeding process. Generally, seed is applied to this prepared area, then some more of the mulch, peatmoss, or soil is sprinkled on top of the seed to keep it in place and enhance water intake. Cain notes that a heavyweight roller can be used to roll the seed into the ground to ensure seed-to-soil contact. After these steps are completed, irrigation should immediately take place. “The goal is to keep the seedbed moist throughout germination to the point where mowing can take place,” she says. For the first 2-3 weeks, depending on the species (fescues and ryegrasses need 2 weeks, bluegrasses will need 3 weeks) a light and frequent watering will take place (0.1 in. to 0.2 in. twice or three times per day). Cain says once there is visible germination, if the weather is not drying out the seedbed too much, irrigation can be reduced after 3 weeks until there is full establishment (after 2-3 months). When mowing can take place, you can reassess your irrigation needs. Once again, the company you purchased from, or university extension offices can help you customize your irrigation rates based on species and region.

thanks to Apple’s new AppTracking Transparency feature. This has led to many users choosing not to opt-in to advertisements, meaning your business will no longer be able to target those individuals on those platforms. This move has caused major reactions from advertising platforms like Facebook, which will in-turn affect home services companies running ads on the platform. Here are a few key takeaways from what we’ve seen across our client portfolio:

Less audience data means less control

More users opting out of tracking means target audiences will be harder to reach, increasing customer acquisition costs. Total ad impressions on Facebook declined by nearly 19% from Q1 to Q2, 2021. With shrinking audience sizes, marketers will need to consolidate campaigns on the platform. Smaller audience sizes have increased demand, and companies are willing to pay a premium to reach them. In the same dataset, the cost-per-thousand (CPM) impressions rose by a staggering 67% in the same timeframe. It will be interesting to monitor what this threshold looks like as more users opt-out of tracking. Will companies ditch Facebook and seek out advertisements on other platforms? Only time will tell. Some home service marketing strat-

egies look at investments by region or zip code. Unfortunately, the reporting used to help guide those investments may go away, making it harder to know what’s working and what’s not. Ad campaigns on Facebook can vary depending on your strategy and goals. “Conversions” can be anything from a video view, a website page visit, or a purchase. Prior to Apple’s iOS 14.5 update, digital marketers would be able to show the demographic makeup of users who clicked through from Facebook to a company’s website, then converted. Facebook has since stripped the ability to view that data. According to the Silverback Strategies dataset referenced above, significant amounts of Facebook demographic data like age and gender were grouped as “Unknown” starting the week of April 26, 2021. As of June,

These changes present a big opportunity for home service providers to out-maneuver competitors. It all depends on how effectively companies can use first-party customer data in their marketing strategy. This valuable information, collected directly from customers and prospects themselves, can be used to personalize messages, target geographic locations, and inform machine learning. But it requires a thoughtful and intentional strategy. There are two primary activities home service providers can do to weave first-party customer data into their marketing strategy: • Collect the right information — consumers know the value of their personal information, so it’s important to identify what data is critical to your marketing campaigns and objectives. • Activate first-party data — once you have collected data from your audience, it needs to be put into practice. This can look different depending on what channels your business is using to generate leads and sales.

what they are and are not ok with sharing. Since many U.S.-based privacy rules are dependent on opting out of info sharing, you’ll want to give visitors the opportunity to opt out of tracking as they navigate your website. Conduct audience research. Surveying your audience is a great way to inform the direction of digital strategy and gather meaningful data quickly from your audience. For example, asking customers about their biggest pain points can help craft marketing messages for campaigns. Examine the marketing value exchange. Customers are beginning to realize how valuable their personal data can be. This means contractors need to get creative about how they collect personal identifiable information, like an email address. For example, contractors may consider offering a discount on installation fees for customers who fill out a survey or

subscribe to their email newsletter. How Can Home Service Contractors Activate Customer Data? Analyze creative performance. With fewer targeting capabilities on the horizon for ad platforms, marketers should begin systematically testing and analyzing the performance of creative variables, like photography vs animation, or method of storytelling. Feedback loops between paid media and creative teams will be critical to make this a reality. Lean into machine learning. Without the ability to target specific audience segments through third-party cookies, marketers may consider taking advantage of creating “lookalike audiences” on advertising platforms like Facebook and Google by uploading customer email lists to each platform. This helps AI and machine learning algorithms identify other users who may share similar behavioral characteristics, broaden-

ing the reach of your advertisements. Expand email marketing. With more complete customer profiles, contractors can personalize email messages or segment their lists in new ways. For example, if you service a broad geographic region and have zip codes of your audience, you can segment your email communications by geography to make your message more personable.

Getting started

Delaying action to address this change is risky. It could lead to fewer leads and sales in 2022 and beyond. Home service providers should first start by talking with their marketing teams, whether in-house or outsourced to an agency, about this change and what steps can be taken to keep lead flows from being disrupted.
