Windsor Staff Reporter The Windsor High School Class of 2010 will be completing one educational stage of their lives on Sunday, May 16th and most will be looking ahead to another step into college.

But before they turn their tassels, leave Windsor, journey to a bigger campus and make the dorms their new living corridor, Angie Rizzuto, Windsor High School counselor, has a few tips to prepare the students for what lies ahead.

• Before Graduation: Avoid the senior slump and finish high school strong.

• Don’t give up. Rizzuto said admissions look at your final semester and can revoke your admission.

• Finalize Plans: Make sure your transcripts are ready to go, talk with your high school counselors and make sure they are going to the right place. Know when the first day of college is and when

move-in dates are. Prepare yourself for those dates and give yourself enough time to move in and get settled.

• Stay Involved: Don’t lose touch with friends and family over the summer. This could be the last summer spent with each other. Make sure the communication lines stay open on all ends.

• Get to Know: If you don’t know your college roommate, call or if time permits, meet up with them and get to know what kind of person they are and what they are interested in. Finalize who is bringing items like the refrigerator, microwave and other necessities.

• Continue to Apply: Rizzuto said scholarships and grants are still available, as well as other opportunities to receive funding for education. She said most deadlines are not until the end of June.

• Financial Plans: It is not too late to receive some financial

aid. Rizzuto said funds may be fewer to draw from, but are still available.

• Attend: Summer orientation at your chosen school.

Orientations are to show new students around the campus, start registration for classes and introduce students to the college life.

While these are just some of the things that students need to prepare for, Rizzuto said the best advice for students going to college is to show up and get involved.

“College is what they put into it,” Rizzuto said. “With no supervision and bells, it is easy to not show up. Go to class, keep up on the work and don’t get discouraged.” Rizzuto said every community college and university has some type of student services and counselors on hand, and is a great resource for students who need assistance in their first year.
