ocus, focus, focus. When working on a resume – whether you’re creating your first one or polishing a document for new opportunities – experts can’t stress enough how important it is to focus on the job you’re applying for and tailor your resume for each individual position. “I think you’re taught that a resume is a document to talk about the history of your experiences. Really, it needs to be about the skills and qualifications you have that are related to a specific position you’re applying for,” explained Renee Welch, director of career services at the University of Northern Colorado. Kim Marino, founder of JustResumesUSA.

She said a resume should act like a marketing document, branding you as the product for a particular job. “Always focus on your future,” she said. “Make sure your accomplishments for your new resume are in alignment with the jobs you are applying for, and make sure every bullet in the accomplishments section has a specific situation and result that will get you through the screening process and speaks to the employer’s needs.” Both Welch and Marino discussed the changes that have happened over the past couple of decades when searching for a job, particularly how much technology has changed the approach for job seekers and employers alike.

There are a variety of applicant tracking systems, software programs that review candidate resumes before a human eye ever sees them. That’s why using specific phrases and skills from a job description in a resume is particularly important – otherwise the resume might never make it past the computer into the hands of human resources. “I know it seems daunting and sometimes feels like preparing materials can feel like it’s own parttime job,” Welch said. “I recommend that you print off a job posting and review it, highlighting the key phrases in it that match your skills and traits, then find a way to incorporate those into the [resume and cover letter].” Marino noted that some industries have certain »Resume continued on page 2.

Job openings span the U.S., and many sit open while businesses feel the stress of a massive talent shortage. For people seeking job security in a hands-on field, this could be the opportunity they’ve been waiting for. Whether you prefer the beauty of the open road or the puzzle of diagnosing complex mechanical equipment, each day offers a satisfying challenge, with the income potential to match.

The experts at Penske Truck Leasing and Penske Logistics say the growth demand is much higher in many parts of the country. Truck driVers “Nearly 70 percent of all the freight tonnage moved in the U.S. goes on trucks,” notes the American Trucking Associations’ (ATA) website www.trucking.org. “Without the industry and our truck drivers, the economy would come to a standstill. To move 9.2 billion tons of freight annually requires nearly 3 million heavy-duty Class 8 trucks and over 3 million truck drivers.” The trucking industry has a massive shortage of drivers that continues to grow as qualified drivers age and retire. The ATA estimates the

For example, being a truck driver doesn’t necessarily mean you’re on the road for weeks on end. There are many opportunities if you prefer to stay close to home. About 80 percent of Penske Logistics’ 4,500 truck drivers return home every

That’s where the focus tip again comes into play. “Focus on where you’re going, not where you’ve been, with the language you use on your resume,” she said. Another mistake some make with their resume, particularly job seekers with longer work histories, is to include every position they’ve held, no matter what. Welch and Marino said including a history for the past 10-15 years is a good rule of thumb. “You can create a separate listing at the end of your resume, without dates, and call it previous employment, listing one-liners of your job title, company name, city and state of each job prior to the past 10-15 years,” Marino said. “The only reason you may want to add this section is if you worked for a company or had a job title that would add value to your new resume.” Style formatting is an important detail that can be overlooked. If you use bulleted statements, for example, make sure they all end the same, with or without a period. Align tabs so that each section is uniform. Pick one style and stick with it throughout. There are a variety of career counselors in Colorado and online that have fee-based services. Weld County Employment Services offers some resume help, and Welch also suggested job seekers contact their alma mater to see if the school offers services to alumni.

ecent research is giving the 86 percent of Americans who sit all day at their jobs new reasons to reach for a handful of nuts while at work, and in particular, pistachios. Adding to an increasing volume of research around the health benefits of pistachios, one study and a national survey in the U.S. suggest a snack of pistachios might boost brain power and concentration levels at work. Pistachios helped office workers stay focused until lunchtime In a national survey, 1,000 American office workers who skipped breakfast consumed a snack of 42 grams (1 and 1/2 serving size) of pistachios between 9 and 11 a.m. Ninety-two percent of the participants said they are “distracted from their tasks at work due to hunger before lunch.” Eighty percent said they usually get hungry in the mornings before lunch and think about food often or every day. The midmorning snack of pistachios proved to be just what they needed to power through the morning. Ninetytwo percent of the participants reported the pistachio snack helped improve their concentration at work as stated in the study, “somewhat or greatly.” That’s not surprising, according to Dr. Mike Roussell, nutrition expert and adviser. “Skipping breakfast is never

While the research studied multiple nuts, pistachios produced the greatest gamma wave response, which is critical for enhancing cognitive processing, information retention, learning and perception. In the study, electroencephalograms (EEG) were taken to measure the strength of brainwave signals. EEG wave band activity was then recorded from nine regions of the scalp associated with cerebral cortical function. “This study provides significant beneficial findings by demonstrating that nuts are as good for your brain as they are for the rest of your body,” said the study’s principal investigator, Lee Berk, DrPH, MPH, associate dean for research at the LLU School of Allied Health Professions, in an interview featured in the November 2017 issue of LLU’s publication, Today. An abstract of the study was presented at Experimental Biology 2017 in San Diego, California, and published in the FASEB Journal. The workplace-snacking survey and health-benefit studies add to a growing base of pistachio research, solidifying that pistachios have all the ideal qualities for a go-to workplace snack.

hundred years ago, few thought that the clunky automobile that broke down so often would ever replace a horse. In the 1970s, people wondered if the personal computer that a few eccentrics were using would have any use beyond storing recipes. It’s safe to say that these innovations, along with many of the technologies we now use daily, were once considered impossible dreams. Right now, the most-talked-about piece of technological innovation that is poised to transform our lives is the autonomous or self-driving car. As selfdriving cars gain widespread adoption, analysts are predicting the rise of what is known as the passenger economy - a term coined by Intel - that is expected to be worth $7 trillion by 2050 as validated in a new report by analyst firm Strategy Analytics. Seven trillion dollars is a lot of money! A decade ago, people couldn’t fully imagine the way smartphones would give rise to the app economy. Today we are at the threshold of something equally momentous - that’s why entrepreneurs and investors are now beginning to imagine the economic possibilities tied in with autonomous cars. The following are five big areas of opportunity that will unfold in the

passenger economy era. Time will be on people’s side. One of the most obvious benefits of a selfdriving car is the amount of time it frees up. Drivers become passengers, and so will be able to concentrate on other tasks. Not only will people be able to work or watch a movie on their way to work, but the commute itself will be shorter, since traffic congestion will become a thing of the past. With smarter analytics, it’s estimated that by 2050, the widespread use of autonomous cars will free up over 250 million hours of commute time per year in the most congested cities. Apps were only the beginning. As more people use autonomous cars, companies and entrepreneurs will respond by developing innovative applications that will entertain and provide services to passengers. Just like innovators used smartphones to unlock the sharing economy, there will be opportunities for startups to discover new “carveniences” that will be expected to generate some $200 billion in revenue. A new world of advertising. From the

late ‘90s, we started seeing new forms of advertising emerge on the web. With self-driving cars, we are poised to see powerful new opportunities that deliver personalized messages to consumers. For instance, algorithms can compute routes and route history to hone in on passengers with specific onboard advertisements from surrounding businesses or attractions. This could be a huge boost to local businesses and will be much more effective than the primitive billboard. Mobility-asa-service. Imagine ordering take-out, or having your groceries or a package of diapers come to your door via a driverless car. This is something that we’re likely to see fairly soon. Shipping and freight companies, local delivery services and internet giants will make use of autonomous vehicles to transport goods across the country. These types of services will likely generate $3 trillion in revenues by 2050. New business models. Today, many companies offer perks such as work-from-home days or the option for people to leave the office to work in a cafe or wherever is

most suitable for them. In the not-toodistant future, the workplace will further transform as the commute evolves. The self-driving car will blend with the office, turning the commute into a productive part of the workday. In turn, this will allow people to go home earlier and spend more time with their families. The advent of the passenger economy will contribute to a safer and more efficient world. Those who can imagine and anticipate the coming changes will be in the best position to get the most out of it.

ould you start paying your employees with cryptocurrency? In a short answer, yes. And companies are already doing it. So what does that look like for the average employee? What can they do with these cryptocoins? How do they pay their mortgages? Do supermarkets take these currencies? Seriously, how do people live real life on digital coins? Let’s find out. When you first approach your employees about paying them in cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin and Ether, they might be a bit apprehensive. It might take some good old fashioned education to get people on board with receiving digital coins instead of pay cheque or cash. And that’s fine. Change takes time to be accepted. It helps to know that there are other companies already doing this and it’s working out for them. What also helps is the growing list of corporations and businesses that actually accept cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin. While there are many pros to paying your employees with cryptocurrency, there are also a number of drawbacks for the employee. Some of the pros associated with this practice include cheaper payroll runs, it’s easy to implement, you can transfer money to employees all over the world without high conversion fees, and the cryptocurrency can be used to buy other cryptocurrencies for future profit potential. Some of the cons associated with paying employees cryptocurrencies, however, include capital gains tax: employees would have to pay tax on any profits they saw above and

beyond what you paid them. While it’s great if the coins go up in value, the employee might not appreciate losing most of it to the taxman. Another con associated with paying employees with cryptocurrency is the risk of losing money. Sure, a lot of cryptocurrencies are stable and do well, but markets are volatile and employees could end up with less than what you intend to pay them. Still though, working for a living has always had its risks and there is no guarantee that your fiat currency is going to be worth the same amount tomorrow. If you are a startup looking to draw out some really great talent, offering cryptocurrency payments might bring out the tech-savvy, attract talent who is looking to break into a new and upcoming field, and provide startups with an easy way to pay people. What’s more, ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings) can fund companies to get their business and technology off the ground, freeing up cryptocurrency to pay employees with the digital currency. Operating capital is vital to the success of a new company, and certainly an ICO is a great way to build a nest egg for operations. The bottom line? We used to talk in terms of decades when we would reference the future. But big changes, like paying employees with cryptocurrencies, are already happening. If business owners continue to think and operate like nothing is changing, they are going to find themselves left out in the cold, holding money that is worthless, and scrambling to change their ways when it might already be too late.
