DAYS
By Madeline AndersonThe Maumee River is impressive for many reasons, including being the largest watershed of any river feeding the Great Lakes, a walleye fishing mecca and a premier waterfront destination for downtown Toledo. Start with a date night near Promenade Park at The Chop House, where an extensive wine list is paired with USDA Prime beef, seafood and gourmet desserts. Find even more dining options across the river with great city views of downtown at The Docks. Nearby, you’ll discover the new Glass City Metropark that is just the start of bigger things to come, and a destination in its own right. The park features a glass pavilion with rooftop plants and skyline views, a sledding hill, walking paths and an event lawn for 5,000 people, all at an incredible waterfront location. Phase two of the park includes an ice-skating ribbon, restaurant, play areas and a campground.
For an adventure beyond city life, explore the Maumee River Water Trail, a 107-mile stretch from Lake Erie to the Ohio-Indiana border, connecting five Toledo-area metroparks. Learn the basics at a Metroparks Toledo paddling program before embarking down the river in a boat, kayak or canoe. With 39 access points, easily create your own multi-day trip with hiking and camping along the way. If you prefer fishing to kayaking, catch some walleye along the shoreline at popular spots like Side Cut Metropark, where 500,000 of the fish make their way up the river each spring. For another unique fishing experience, book a trip for the whole family on the J&M Cruise Lines Glass City Pearl for an eight-hour yellow perch fishing excursion on Lake Erie.
Explore downtown Toledo with ease along the new Glass City Riverwalk When complete, this 5+ mile, mixed-use trail system will span both sides of the Maumee, connecting several neighborhoods and encouraging a range of outdoor activities.

YOUR WAY
With so much to see and do, Toledo lets you customize the fun to your heart’s content. Whether you’re into the arts, science and history, or the great outdoors, the Glass City is a shining example of how to have it your way.
By Jason Brillarts + theater
It’s no stretch — the longest-running performance of The Nutcracker ballet in North America calls Toledo home. Entering its 83rd year in 2023, the Toledo Ballet and Toledo Symphony partner up for this holiday tradition. But both institutions, along with the Toledo Opera, Ballet Theatre of Toledo and Toledo Jazz Orchestra, delight audiences with classics each year at venues such as the Stranahan Theater and Valentine Theatre, the latter of which is a 128-year-old gem in the heart of downtown Toledo. If contemporary music strums your guitar, tune up with Toledo’s concerts, such as Metroparks Toledo’s Music in Green Spaces concert series, Music Under the Stars at the Toledo Zoo & Aquarium or the Centennial Terrace summer concerts. The city’s popular ProMedica Live Summer Concert Series, which has featured artists such as Patti LaBelle and KC & the Sunshine Band, lets you dance the night away on the banks of the Maumee River. Toledo also has plenty for art lovers. The Toledo Museum of Art features more than 30,000 works, and its Glass Pavilion pays homage to the city’s glassmaking history. While you’re out and about, Toledo’s poppin’ public art is a must-see. The Arts Commission’s collection features dozens of works, including sculptures, murals and light displays.
INSPIRED SPACE
Thanks to a $75 million update, Glass City Center in downtown Toledo is a must-see venue celebrating community and creativity. Check out seven new public artworks, including the illuminated Ladder of Light, the abstract flowers of Blue Lupine and Glass City Jazz: A Global Legacy The adjoining, new Hiltons at Toledo Downtown lets you stay in the center of all the action.
science + learning
Toledo’s rich history as a port city means there’s plenty to discover and learn. History buffs can get their kicks at Fort Meigs in Perrysburg, a re-creation of a critical position for the U.S. in the War of 1812. The fort’s 70 acres feature a visitor center and museum with interpreters. Head over to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library & Museums in nearby Fremont. Tour the former president’s home at Spiegel Grove and learn more about his life. Built in 1850, the Lathrop House at Heritage Sylvania is the former Greek Revival home of abolitionists Lucian and Larissa Lathrop and served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. If seaworthy history is your speed, the National Museum of the Great Lakes shows off 300+ nautical artifacts and two ships docked onsite. Get in touch with your wild side
at the Toledo Zoo & Aquarium, home to 10,000+ animals, including an Emperor Tamarin, a monkey-like creature found in South America. Opened in 2009 and renovated in 2019, Imagination Station is a fun-for-all-ages science center loaded with multi-sensory learning opportunities and hands-on exhibits. Visit the KeyBank Discovery Theater for a spectacular 3-D visual and sound journey on a 58-foot-wide screen.
Toledo’s sporting and outdoors scene is in a league of its own. Lead off at a Toledo Mud Hens game — the Detroit Tigers’ Triple-A squad puts on a great show at Fifth Third Field, and the surrounding Hensville entertainment district is always a hit. If you like collegiate camaraderie, check out the University of Toledo Rockets football team during a home game at the Glass Bowl Stadium. See nationally recognized stock car racing at Toledo Speedway, or get behind the wheel during a Rusty Wallace event. Take in all the sports action from Hollywood Casino Toledo and bet (responsibly) on pro games at Barstool Sportsbook. Play a hand in the new poker room or check out table games like blackjack, craps and roulette. Get into the swing of things at Toledo’s golf courses, such as the lush Heather Downs Country Club and the Scottish-style course at Maumee Bay State Park Golf Course. Outdoor adventures abound at Metroparks Toledo’s 19 parks and Maumee Bay State Park, which offers 1,300+ acres of hiking, fishing, birdwatching and more. Get in touch with Ohio’s agricultural roots at u-pick farms like MacQueen Orchards and Fleitz Pumpkin Farm (try the pumpkin donuts!). At Country Lane Tree Farm, farm-fun continues with activities from camps to holiday events.

From savory lobster mac to awardwinning Hungarian hot dogs, the city of Toledo is brimming with local eateries serving up fresh flavors and delicious dishes that people can’t get enough of. Here are just a few of our favorites to satisfy every craving.
By Ruth Corradi BeachBrunch Bites
Grab a complimentary mimosa and peruse Manhattan's Pub ’n Cheer’s Sunday spread — try the homemade sausage gravy and biscuits and the “secret recipe” stuffing. Enjoy tasty treats for brunch at Focaccia’s including mimosa flights and breakfast poutine on weekends. Check out The Heights for the stunning, 360° views of downtown Toledo and the Maumee River — stay for the upscale vibe and handcrafted cocktails. The Leaf and Seed Cafe has brunch your whole crowd can enjoy, since it’s totally vegan and totally tasty (read: non-vegans will be completely satisfied). Toledo’s Original Pancake House is nearing 50 years as a local tradition. Everything on the menu, including the batter, is made from scratch. Don’t miss the famous original apple pancake.
Top-Tier Chefs
Souk Mediterranean Kitchen and Bar, helmed by Moussa Salloukh, is known for masterfully fusing traditional Mediterranean flavors, like the duck & sweet corn sambousek that features a pomegranate molasses. Registry Bistro showcases chef Erika Rapp with a casual elegance that’s the perfect canvas for such inspired dishes as braised rabbit vin blanc potpie. Benchmark Restaurant is known both for its super-attentive staff and its creative chef-owner Jeff Dinnebeil, who serves up superiorquality steak and seafood. Chef Kengo Kato’s eponymous Kengo Sushi & Yakitori features fresh and delectable sushi, along with his signature omakase “leave it up to chef” two-hour, 12-course experience.
Elevated American
Fowl & Fodder has grilled chicken tenders, sure, but it’s also got almond chicken tenders, gluten-free crispy chicken tenders and then some. Barr's Public House takes standard apps and gives them a twist, like white bean hummus or whipped feta dip, and even a Guinness sloppy joe and short rib shepherd’s pie. Order up mac ‘n’ cheese from Inside the Five Brewing Co. — keep it classic or try the pork belly mac or buffalo mac. This relatively young brewery (2018) is already winning awards, including a bronze in the 2022 World Beer Cup for their Irish-style red ale.
From the Sea
The Real Seafood Co. is known for its hearty lump blue crab cakes that make crab the star rather than relying on breadcrumbs, as well as the creamy mascarpone that shines in a shrimp and scallop risotto. Claude's Prime Seafood offers the rare opportunity to experience a seafood tower overflowing with an abundance of fresh catch including oysters, fish, lobster and tuna so you don't have to settle. Rayoka Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi offers rolls including the creeby roll (with cream cheese and ebi or shrimp) and the SBC roll (sweet but crabby). At Georgio’s Café International, delight in selecting from an ever-changing menu of the freshest seafood delivered daily, prepared with homemade sauces or rubs. Pro tip: start your meal with a cup of their delicious lobster bisque.
Caffeine Fix
Try the red eye at The Onyx Café a shot of espresso blended with black coffee. Or, if it’s going to be a long day, grab a black eye, which has two espresso shots. Skip those pumped-from-a bottle syrups in your coffee and try Plate 21’s brown sugar latte, with espresso and house-made brown sugar syrup made with cane molasses and beet sugar. BREW coffee bar, conveniently located near the campus of the University of Toledo, specializes not only in locally roasted coffee but also offers an assortment of scratchmade treats from some of the best dessert and pastry names in town. The Flying Joe is another local spot that invites patrons to enjoy local roasts and a varied menu of sandwiches and baked goods, many of them vegan. As former pilots, the owners are on a mission to bring the best cups from around the world to Toledo.
There are over three dozen local craft breweries in Northwest Ohio, and Toledo is the ideal hub for exploring them all. The 419 Ale Trail is a collection of designated stops to grab a pint and maybe make some friends. Keep track of your progress and enter to win prizes as you explore the region’s breweries. We’ll be stopping by Juniper Brewing Co. for their BLiS BA Wolfman's Brother, an imperial pumpkin beer that’s been aged in barrels that first held bourbon and then maple syrup. Findlay Brewing Co.’s Manananggal is pretty intriguing too — it’s an IPA with mango and Carolina reaper peppers. Wild Side Brewing has a flagship Shotgun Lager that’s easy drinking and always hits the spot. And Buffalo Rock Brewing Company’s Pecan Grove Nut Brown Ale is billed as “pecan pie in a glass,” a concept we can totally get behind. Be sure to take advantage of the 419 Brew Bus or Swig Ohio Shuttles to make sure your trips are nothing but responsible fun. 419AleTrail.com
