MUST-DOS A DOZEN

Summit County is full of unique adventures for every traveler. Visit one of these top 12 attractions during your next trip!

The Akron Art Museum’s nationally recognized collection is nothing short of spectacular. See the museum’s 7,000-plus-piece collection, with sculptures, glass, paintings and more dating from the 1850s to present. Then, take a casual stroll through the themed terraces of the Bud and Susie Rogers Garden.

Children will enjoy exploring the interactive exhibits at the Akron Children’s Museum. With exhibits

like Farm to Table and Healthy Little Monsters, kids can play as farmers and chefs or doctors and veterinarians. Splash at the water table or create a masterpiece at the kid-approved giant light bright.

Experience a starlit sky during a performance at the Akron Civic Theatre, one of five remaining atmospheric theaters in the nation. Admire the Mediterranean décor, including authentic European antiques, before you take in a show or live music.

Get up close with over 2,000 animals from around the world at the Akron Zoo, from penguins to jaguars to red pandas. Opt for one of the tours, including the Rise and Shine Safari Tour where you can follow a staff member as they open the zoo for the day.

Blossom Music Center hosts a variety of musical acts throughout the year. Listen to music as it fills the rolling hills and surrounding Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The Cleveland Orchestra claims the venue as their summer home, and nationally recognized artists visit to perform country, rap, rock and more.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio’s only national park, provides visitors with the opportunity to connect with nature. Fish for large-mouth bass, crappie and bluegill, or hike the 125-plus miles of trails. View the 60-foot Brandywine Falls and explore past the cascading falls on the 1.5-mile Brandywine Gorge Loop.

See Cuyahoga Valley National Park

from a different angle on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. The vintage rail cars weave through the park along the Cuyahoga River. Enjoy murder mystery or family fun-themed rides, and purchase snacks, beverages and a souvenir on the Café Car.

Travel back to the 19th century at Hale Farm & Village. This living museum includes 32 historical structures; demonstrations, including weaving and blacksmithing; costumed interpreters sharing what daily life was like; and natural spaces with farm animals and gardens. Commemorate your trip with a handcrafted souvenir at the MarketPlace.

Learn about Northeast Ohio’s aviation history at MAPS Air Museum. With restored aircraft from the early 20th century to present day as well as aviation artifacts, interactive exhibits, historical archives in the museum’s library and more, the internationally known museum is a must for aviation enthusiasts.

MGM Northfield Park and the adjacent harness racing track combine as Ohio’s premier gaming destination. In addition to the gaming floor, visit Center Stage for a comedy show or concert, or visit one of the four restaurants for classic American fare, surf and turf or Italian cuisine.

Take a guided tour of the historic 65-room Tudor Revival Manor House at Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, the former estate of F.A. Seiberling, cofounder of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. After the tour, visit the Gate Lodge, historic gardens and the Corbin Conservatory.

Summit Metro Parks is made up of 16 metro parks with 150 miles of trails, including 22 miles of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, and 15,000 acres of nature. Visit one of the three nature centers and participate in programs and activities the entire family can enjoy.

LOCAL EATS

Hungry? Lucky you. You’ll love the delicious plates that Summit County restaurants are serving up.

Homemade is the name of the game at Luigi’s — as in homemade Italian sausage and their famous house salad dressing. You can’t go wrong with the pizza, of course, but don’t miss their baked specials, ranging from ravioli Florentine to Italian sausage casserole. They taste like someone’s treasured home recipe from generations ago.

35°Brix is named for the measure of sugar in grapes harvested for ice wine. No surprise, then, that this eclectic place takes its libations seriously, even offering an extensive menu of cocktails to go (Buffalo Trace Russian, anyone?). The restaurant prides itself on scratch-made food, with sauces, dressings, soups and batters. Don’t miss the Tuscan chicken, a house specialty.

Take a literal drive down memory lane at Gasoline Alley with walls covered in gas

station signs and old photos, along with an old gas pump. This is the real deal — the items are antiques from the Akron area. Grab a Fat Boy Burger (there are nine varieties, including Bleu Cheese and Greek) and gawk at the cool setting.

Moe’s Restaurant is a welcoming, familiar place even on your first visit. With their monthly changing menu, you’ll always get fresh choices, with fish delivered daily and pasta and bread made from scratch. There’s also a standard menu so you can find a favorite and stick with it — we recommend the Crabby Patty, with homemade spicy slaw and tartar sauce.

When you’re at Whitey’s, there are two things you must try: their chili and their fries, both of which are homemade. There are several chili varieties to choose from, including jalapeño beef, chipotle garden vegetable and beef with beans.

And the fries? They’re even better topped with chili!

Blue Door Café & Bakery makes sharing easy, with their menu divided into three sections: small, medium and large. Choose several smalls and mediums for the table, like homemade naan with zingy caponata and white bean hummus, and no one will be envious of anyone else’s plate. And try the chocolate soufflé — hardly ever seen on menus, since it’s not easy to master so many times in one night.

Valley’s Edge Steak & Seafood offers inspired twists on standards, like their sesame-crusted walleye with tomato quinoa, scallion cream and sautéed broccolini or crispy falafel made with black-eyed-pea hummus.

Pick’s at PLX has something for everyone, with multiple restaurants located in the same building. Their Lakeside Bar is truly (and

06 35°BRIX: 35°BRIX

beautifully) lakeside, with casual fare like shareable coconut shrimp and a Hawaiian barbecue chicken sandwich. Lagos features casual fine dining like Lake Erie perch with house slaw and tartar sauce. Or opt for the lobster ravioli, tossed with mussels in vodka cream sauce.

FlipSide has truly elevated burgers, all of which are Ohio-raised grass-fed beef. Experience the Uncle Jimmy Burger, with peanut butter, applewood smoked bacon and habanero pepper jelly.

Diamond Grille is a landmark for a reason. Since 1935, they’ve served exquisitely aged U.S. Prime beef with side dishes that include classics like mushrooms, sautéed spinach and sautéed onion. The beautifully preserved retro environment suggests old fashioneds and sidecars — good thing Diamond Grille has perfected those, too.

SWEET TREATS

Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop will make you feel like a kid in a candy shop — just like the name. There are tons of candies you probably haven’t seen since childhood, as well as some you didn’t know existed, like a “giant gummy breakfast” — bacon, eggs and waffle.

The Peanut Shoppe of Akron has been the place to pick up gourmet nuts, plus chocolates and candies, since 1933. Look for the photo-worthy sign downtown.

Grab some handfuls of goodness at The Crooked Kettle Popcorn Co., which takes the humble kernel to a new level, with nearly a dozen flavors from Simply Salted to Tutti Frutti.

At Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream, try a four-scoop sampler if you’re overwhelmed by all their luscious homemade flavors. On the go?

Grab some Handel Pops, ice cream on a stick dipped in scrumptious gourmet chocolate.

Pav’s Creamery lives up to its saying: “where life is sweet.” The family-owned shops offer lots of flavors of ice cream, with five northeast Ohio locations including Bath, Portage Lakes, Uniontown and Cuyahoga Falls. Try the Death By Peanut Butter or the brilliantly blue Cookie Monster, a blend of Oreo cookies, cookie dough and blue moon ice cream.

Love donuts? Peace, Love, and Little Donuts makes donuts that are the perfect size to have multiples. The mini treats pack a lot of deliciousness, with flavors including Magically Delicious (Lucky Charms are involved) and Heath, Wind and Fire, starring crushed Heath Bars.

Sweet Mary’s Bakery is known for its variety of handmade treats, including pastries, cookies, cakes and specialty baked goods.

EXPLORE THE Outdoors

From Cuyahoga Valley National Park’s 33,000-acre playground to the Summit Metro Parks, which garners over five million annual visits, Summit County is a scenic escape for nature lovers.

HIKER’S HAVEN

Wind through Summit County’s 150-plus miles of natural habitats, from woodlands to wetlands. Ledges Trail, an easily walkable yet rugged 1.8-mile loop, showcases a spectacular display of moss-covered sandstone walls and an overlook with stunning sunset views. Relax to the rush of running water at Brandywine Gorge Loop, a 1.5-mile hike that, in addition to Brandywine Falls, includes a remarkably vibrant landscape due to the diverse tree population. For a more challenging hike, opt for a trek to Blue Hen Falls, a 3-mile jaunt with a 580-foot elevation change and 15-foot waterfall. Or try the jogging trail at Sand Run Metro Park, a gorgeous 6-mile local favorite. At the trail’s starting point, Old Portage Area, a 1-mile loop offers the perfect destination for visitors with strollers or special mobility needs.

LEDGES TRAIL, CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK: GABE LEIDY

RIDER’S RETREAT

Whether you seek sunrays or shade, wondrous overlooks or woodland backdrops, you’ll find bicycling bliss along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, a multipurpose path perfect for exploring the national park and metro parks. For a one-way ride, park at a Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad station, board with your bike and travel to your starting point. From the Towpath Trail, make connections to various historic destinations, including the 34-mile paved Bike & Hike Trail that breezes from Sagamore Hills to Stow. Feeling adventurous? Visit Hampton Hills Metro Park or East Rim Trail for several miles of mountain biking trails featuring magnificent views and exciting obstacles.

BIRD-WATCHER’S BOUNTY

Bring your binoculars to catch glimpses of the 300-plus bird species observed in the region. Beaver Marsh’s boardwalk offers amazing views of Virginia rails and least bitterns. Don’t miss waterfowl migrations in March and November. At the Ledges, a specialized microclimate creates an environment where blueheaded vireos, winter wrens, hermit thrushes and black-throated green warblers can be spotted in late spring. During the same time, make your way to Station Road Bridge’s Pinery Narrows to spot a pair of bald eagles nesting or visit the heronry on Bath Road to see great blue herons.

ANGLER’S ANCHORAGE

More than 65 species of aquatic vertebrates offer plenty of intrigue for novice to expert anglers. Kendall Lake and Horseshoe Pond provide fully accessible experiences with paved paths to the docks. Nimisila Reservoir Metro Park, one of the 13 bodies of water that make up the Portage Lakes, offers nearly 800 acres of quiet spots to drop a line. Gorge Metro Park, Cascade Valley Metro Park and Deep Lock Quarry Metro Park are prime locations for casting in the Cuyahoga River. Meanwhile, Little Turtle Pond is a 2.5-acre watering hole exclusively for anglers 15 and younger.

SLEDDER’S SANCTUARY

Embrace the frosty outdoor fairyland through a variety of winter activities. Sledding options abound at Cascade Valley, Goodyear Heights, Munroe Falls and Sand Run Metro Parks and Kendall Hills. Cross-country skiers will appreciate the variety of easy to moderate options along the Bike & Hike Trail and Ledges Field (great for beginners), as well as Boston Run Trail, Oak Hill Trail, Plateau Trail and Tree Farm Trail, all of which are also excellent destinations for snowshoeing. For downhill skiing, there’s no place better than Boston Mills/Brandywine Ski Resorts, a pair of sister resorts that provide a combined 18 trails, from beginner to advanced slopes to moguls, terrain parks and snow tubing.

AKRONICITY (AK-RUH-NIS-I-TEE). NOUN.

The innate creativity, tenacity and intellectual prowess surging through the people of Akron, Ohio: Embrace your akronicity and make your ideas reality. | Akronicity is the innovative and determined spirit only the people of Akron possess.

ORIGIN: Settled in 1825 — Akron from the Greek “elevation” / icity from the sweat, tears and passion propelling our community forward.

FOR NEARLY 200 YEARS, Greater Akron has inspired ideas and products with profound worldly impact. Settled in a strategic center for travel and trade, Akron offers an exchange of creativity unlike any other. Learn more about this common thread we call “akronicity” at akronicity.com.

Can’t Be Held Down

In 1917, Goodyear created the Goodyear Zeppelin Company. They built two military rigid airships — the USS Akron and USS Macon — and later helped NASA develop systems for the Apollo spacecrafts and tires for moon vehicles. Goodyear’s world headquarters has been based in Akron since 2013.

History in the Making

As her husband’s business venture, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, thrived, Gertrude Seiberling toured manor homes in England for inspiration to help build the family’s new 65-room Tudor-style mansion. Visit Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens to learn more about the Seiberling family.

Akron Innovates

Originally, toys were exclusively handmade — and expensive. In 1884, Samuel C. Dyke automated his Akron factory to mass-produce millions of marbles, making toys accessible for all. Take the kids to the Akron Children’s Museum for playful interactive learning.

International Tastemakers

In Akron’s early days, German immigrants introduced beer. Brewmasters Fredrick Gaessler and Wilhelm Burkhardt partnered to form Burkhardt and Company, and now their tradition lives on in breweries like Thirsty Dog Brewing Co., found in the former headquarters. Visit Thirsty Dog Brewing Co. along the #SummitBrewPath.

HISTORY IS IN AKRON ALIVE

Greater Akron is proud of its history as a leader in industry, civil rights and sports. Here’s just some of what you’ll find in the city.

Explore Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, the original home of F.A. Seiberling, cofounder of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, which still makes its headquarters in Akron. As you walk through the Tudor Revival Manor House and gardens, decorated with original furnishings, imagine living there like the family did from 1915 to 1955. The 70-acre estate, the first and largest National Historic Landmark in Akron, is one of the nation’s oldest private homes open to the public. TIP: The first conversation of Alcoholics Anonymous took place here.

Just in time to celebrate Akron’s bicentennial in 2025, the Akron History Center celebrates how the city has evolved over the last 200 years. Historical displays span Akron’s development in various industries, as well as the Akron community’s influential role in social movements like the abolition of slavery and women’s rights. The center creates engaging historical narratives by combining artifacts and technology, drawing in both residents and tourists. This place is an educational resource for everyone, so make sure to stop by and learn about Akron’s diverse history. TIP: Learn about Akron’s importance to auto racing at the special NASCAR exhibit by Goodyear.

Basketball fans won’t want to miss visiting House Three Thirty, run by the LeBron James Family Foundation. More than just a place to visit the NBA legend’s museum or eat his favorite meals, it’s a community center for the betterment of Akron. James, who was born and raised in Akron, opened the center to give back to his community. When you visit, you’ll find resources like financial advising, job training, the newly-opened Home Court Museum, dining options, entertainment events, spaces for community conversations and the I PROMISE Program for Akron students. TIP: Pick up I PROMISE gear that helps serve Akron families in the venue’s retail shop.

Spend time at the new Sojourner Truth Legacy Plaza, dedicated in spring 2024 to Sojourner Truth, the abolitionist and women’s rights activist. In 1851, Truth visited Akron and gave her influential “Ain’t I A Woman?” speech in front of the Universalist Old Stone Church. While this church no longer stands, a plaza at the adjacent site honors Truth’s commitment to equality. It will feature a life-sized bronze sculpture of Sojourner Truth by Woodrow Nash, Akron’s own internationally renowned African American artist. The plaza invites you to celebrate Truth’s legacy. TIP: The floral motif in the plaza was inspired by Truth’s paternal family roots in Ghana.

Akron is the hometown of basketball legend LeBron James, whose LeBron James Family Foundation services the community and is home to LeBron James’ Home Court museum.

The city of Akron is home to 189,347 residents, while Summit County has a total population of 534,000.

Before his Gone With the Wind days, Clark Gable worked as a clerk at Firestone for a whopping $95 a week.

Top employers in the area include Akron Children’s Hospital, ranked one of the Best Children’s Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, and the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, known for its tires and blimps that are a familiar sight over football stadiums and PGA golf events. Other major employers are GOJO Industries (producer and marketer of skin health and hygiene), Sterling Jewelers, FirstEnergy, Summa Health and Signet Jewelers.

The acclaimed Akron Zoo has over 2,000 animals and 200 different species. There’s even behind-thescenes tours — find out where the lions sleep and their favorite toys!

Two major interstates (76 and 77) run through Akron. Cleveland is a mere 40 miles north. Arriving in Akron is easy by air, too. Just 15 miles from downtown, the Akron-Canton Airport is serviced by four airlines (Allegiant, American, Breeze, United) with 20 nonstop flights, 150 one-stop flights and 99-plus international destinations. Traveling is easy with affordable airport parking options, on-site access to rental cars and close shuttles to downtown.
