State-Mandated Retirement Plans are Coming gram allows you to make the best decision for your business. Marjorie Wentz, AIF® and Justin Wentz are Retirement Plan Advisors at Trinity Wealth Management. They help business owners and their employees achieve their financial goals through Retirement Plan advice. 610-296-2020 |www.trinity-wealth.com. Trinity Wealth Management, LLC (“TWM”) is a Registered Investment A recent trend in state laws could soon impact your business. There are currently eight states mandating retirement plans for working residents: California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, and Washington. These states require automatic enrollment in a state-run IRA plan when workers are not offered a company-sponsored retirement plan. What could this mean for you and your employees if Pennsylvania follows this trend? First, it requires some work for the company. Typically, if a company has five or more employees, they must participate in the program. The company is

required to set up automatic deductions from participants’ paychecks to fund the state’s retirement account. If the employer fails to do so, there is a warning issued, evolving to penalties that must be paid to the state. Additionally, companies may miss out on tax benefits that can be realized when offering a retirement plan through the business. Although it is important to encourage retirement savings, these state-run plans often have high expenses and limited flexibility. One of the state plans has only five investment options and participants are restricted in the number of times they can make changes to their account. Pennsylvania State

legislators have started the conversation addressing retirement security in PA. According to the PAHouse. com website, a staggering 44 percent of working Pennsylvanians – over two-million workers – lack access to any retirement plan. Pennsylvania House Democrats have proposed the Keystone Retirement Security Program to address this concern. Many small businesses don’t offer a retirement plan because they believe plans are too complicated and expensive. However, there are quite a few affordable options and local advisors can help companies navigate the regulations to simplify the process. Getting ahead of a state-mandated pro-

The Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic, sponsored by Benchmark Federal Credit Union, celebrated its 15th anniversary on Saturday, August 10th in the streets of downtown West Chester. This year the cycling classic was the final race in the official USA CRITS racing series, hailing thousands of spectators from all across Chester County and beyond. For some, the beautiful, sunny, 80-degree day began at 8 AM with the Rothman Institute Amateur Trials, where cyclists raced to qualify for the amateur men’s criterium to be held later in the day. For most, the fun began at 3 PM with the MacElree Harvey Kids’ Zone, featuring the Flyers Community Caravan which included an inflatable hockey rink, giant Gritty,

Flyers Alumni and more. While both the MacElree Harvey Kids’ Zone and the Chester County Hospital Community Festival, which showcased goods and services provided by local businesses, continued all day long, the racing began at 3:30 PM with the West Chester Dental Arts Kids’ Race. Following the kids’ race was the Tolsdorf Trike Challenge, where pre-registered teams of five competed in a round-robin, double-elimination tournament on oversized tricycles. This year, Brandywine Valley Heating & AC defended their title and once again took home the Golden Trike, a large trophy made especially for the event, where their team name will be engraved for a second time. After the trike race came the Rothman Institute Amateur Men’s Criterium, including several cyclists who participated in the morning trials. Matt Stordy of Duxbury, Massachusetts took the gold, while Mark Light and Edwin Morel placed second and third, respectively. Then came the Wilmington University Pro Women’s Criterium, with familiar faces like Laura Van Gilder, 54, who has been racing this particular criterium since 2012. In first place came Samantha Schneider of West Allis, Wisconsin, with Harriet Owen taking second and Beck Wiasak clinching third place.

Rounding out the night, the Iron Hill Pro Men’s Criterium began around 8 PM. As the sun set on the riders, Frank Travieso of Athens, Georgia took the gold, with Alex Mclaughlin finishing second and Ismael Collado Acosta coming in third. Based on team scores, Butcherbox Cycling beat out CLIF Bar Racing by one-tenth of a second to take the gold for the men’s teams, while Colavita/Bialetti Pro Cycling, Hagen’s Berman Supermint and DNA Pro Cycling Team took home the gold, silver, and bronze, respectively, for the women’s teams. “This year’s Benchmark Twilight Cycling Classic was a huge success,” said Mark Yoder, President and CEO of the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce, the event’s organizer. “We were blessed with a beautiful day for racing, and we can’t thank our volunteers and our sponsors enough for all the hard work they did to make the day so much fun. We know how important this event is for the community, and it’s thanks to them that we can pull it off every year.” For more information about the event and race results, go to www.GreaterWestChester.com.

Rather than the typical internship experience that requires students to be present for approximately 20 hours a week, students within the program have the freedom to work on their marketing plans on their own time before bringing their insights back to a collaborative, professordriven setting. Unlike some marketing classes with similar initiatives, these students are given not only real-life experience to pad their resumes when it comes time for graduation, but a chance to see their work come to life within the community. “We at the Chamber want to be a resource for our members, so the goal for us is to constantly collaborate with our community,” continued President Yoder. “By doing so we are not only advocating for our members, but for our community – including both its businesses and its students.” To learn more about the Cooperative Client/Student Team Program, go to www. This past August, the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce announced it teamed up with the West Chester University College of Business and Public Management to launch a marketing strategy pilot program to benefit both students and local businesses. The program, named the Cooperative Client/Student Team Program, is designed to provide students and local business owners the opportunity to collaborate in a projectbased marketing strategy class held at West Chester University. Four GWCC members were selected to participate in the program as students from the university work to develop marketing strategies for their assigned business. At the end of the semester, upon completion of the project, each student team will meet with their client and present their findings with a formal presentation and written recommendations based on market research, competitive analysis and market analysis. The businesses can then choose whether or not to incorporate those recommendations into their current marketing strategy. “The advantage of this program for business owners is that they won’t have to build their own internship,” said Mark Yoder, president and CEO of the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce. “They’re getting the advantage of having an upper-

As part of their efforts to transition Chester County to 100% renewable energy by 2050, the Chester County Commissioners and West Chester Area Council of Governments announced this past August that they would hold a Chester County Clean Energy Tour, highlighting the individuals, businesses, schools, and more dedicated to switching to clean, renewable energy, in October. On Saturday, October 19th, members hosting open houses along the tour have the opportunity to showcase their clean energy projects as they share their stories and answer attendee questions as part of the Chester County Clean Energy Tour, endorsed by the Chester County Commissioners. The West Chester Area Council of Governments has taken the lead to support the community in identifying pathways to transition to affordable, sustainable energy in order to reduce pollution and the serious health and environmental impacts of our current energy system. This step reflects the concerns of local residents and customers who have long shown concern for environmental issues, including air quality and preserving open space. The Chester County Clean Energy Tour will give local businesses an opportunity to showcase their sustainability profile and to learn about new options, while allowing attendees a chance to learn new methods

and gain a better understanding of the efforts these establishments make to ensure a sustainable, renewable future for their community and its citizens. As part of the Annual National Solar Tour, coordinated by the American Solar Energy Society and Solar United Neighbors in all 50 states, the tour gives prospective customers a chance to visit exemplary businesses, homes, schools, places of worship and municipal buildings to learn how sustainable technologies are already reducing utility bills and pollution right here in local neighborhoods. The National Solar Tour engaged more than 150,000 participants in 2018: solar installers, energy-efficiency businesses, homeowners – and, most of all, potential customers who care about the health and safety impacts of energy use in their community. Chester County proudly ranks second in solar installations in the state of Pennsylvania, second only to Lancaster County, and it currently employs over 8,500 men and women in clean energy-related jobs, many of them in the Greater West Chester area. The Chester County Clean Energy Tour is free and open to the public. For more information, please visit: nationalsolartour.org/localtours/chestercounty/

Five Ways to Advance Your Company Culture In today’s highly competitive talent marketplace, employers are constantly searching for ways to reduce employee turnover and raise employee engagement. Building and fostering an aligned and purposeful workforce is a sure way to optimize, energize and retain your best people. Many people say they feel disconnected and apathetic about their jobs.
