ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Create 5,000 jobs and $1 billion in new capital investment through targeted business recruitment and expansion efforts in targeted sectors

Q4 CAMPAIGN UPDATE

ACTION 1

Had a site visit with a building products manufacturing company with $150-200 million anticipated capital investment and 41 new jobs.

ACTION 2

Following our Sales Mission to Los Angeles, our business recruitment active lead pipeline is now at 30+. An active lead is a company that we have met with that has confirmed expansion plans and is interested in locating to Spokane County. These businesses represent a mix of our target industries: 42% Life Science, 34% Advanced Manufacturing, 18% Clean Tech, 6% Architecture & Engineering firms.

ACTION 3

Prepared two applications for WA Commerce Evergreen Manufacturing Growth Grant. We identified and worked with a total of five companies in Life Science, Advanced Manufacturing, and Clean Tech. We are awaiting award notice in Q1 2024. Establish an opportunity fund to ensure the region can proactively react to unique growth opportunities Increase revenues for 50 underrepresented businesses by 25% in year one and 50% in year two after utilizing the accelerator

ACTION 1

Partnered with Aim & Build Consulting & Development to execute a second Spokane Inclusive Business Catalyst cohort, with a focus on rural and veteran-owned businesses. We identified seven businesses in Q4.

ACTION 2

Partnered with AHANA to prepare a third BIPOC cohort in 2024. Targeting businesses going through additional business development programs such as Impact Washington’s program that provides 80 hours of free counseling to underrepresented manufacturing businesses.

ACTION 1

Connect 100 underrepresented businesses with assistance and resources to promote the growth and expansion of existing companies and small businesses

Executed new partnership with the Spokane Public Library and the Spokane County Library District to manage StartUp Spokane in an effort to make entrepreneurial assistance more regional and accessible.

ACTION 2

Secured partnership with Lee & Hayes to provide eight hours of free consulting per month to Spokane Inclusive Business Catalyst graduates and GSI member partners.

ACTION 3

Provided support services to 36 Woman owned, 15 Veteran owned, and 28 BIPOC owned businesses through our APEX program. We support small businesses on registering, bid submittals/reviews, contract performance, billing, designations, and more.

ACTION 4

Hosted two workshops Why WBE (Women Business Enterprise) Certification Matters partnered with Avista and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Certification Program partnered with City of Spokane Valley and Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce.

TALENT ATTRACTION & RETENTION

Establish Spokane regional partnerships, bridging businesses with education sectors to provide a minimum of 300 internships for postsecondary students

ACTION 1

Provide workforce and employee upskill training support for 100 underserved businesses in the Spokane region through external partnerships and/or grant funding

Q4 CAMPAIGN UPDATE

Organized and taught an internship best practices workshop to 21 organizations. This workshop included a panel discussion by representatives of industry and higher education.

ACTION 2

Formed working groups to create programs that provide skills and confidence to interns, toolkits for businesses to implement internship programs, and provide management skills to intern leaders. Conducted a workshop to support 26 businesses in applying for Career Connect Washington funding. Two of these businesses were underserved businesses: Woman owned White Diamond Concrete and Latino Civic Alliance.

ACTION 2

Organized The Internship Network: Business Workshop to teach best practices in developing an internship program. Engaged 21 businesses, including two underserved: Woman owned Express Employment Professionals and Veteran owned Lite-Check.

ACTION 3

Connected one underserved business, Veteran owned Lite-Check to the Evergreen Manufacturing Growth Grants Program, designed to support growth substantially. Provide 5,000 students in the Spokane region career pathway experiences prior to high school graduation in partnership with Career Connect Washington and the Spokane STEM Network

Establish additional Spokane regional business and education partnerships to develop 30% more career pathways and the progression through pathways to postsecondary education and/ or employment

ACTION 1

Led two Business AfterSchool events that supported 78 students in a career exploration opportunity in partnership with Wagstaff to showcase manufacturing careers and Washington State University Spokane to highlight medical careers.

ACTION 2

Supported Associated Builders and Contractors, NEWESD 101, and Ferris High School with a Construction Trades Night attended by 790 community members.

ACTION 1

Partnered with Eastern Washington University and Providence to obtain additional funding to expand Learning and Employment Record work to the refugee population.

ACTION 2

Coordinated a campaign, Education Grows Economies, to assist school districts in Spokane County with bonds and levies. K-12 education is essential to fueling the growth of our economy as it is the foundation to ensure we have a talented workforce to fill regional jobs.
