CHAIR’S CUP
FROM THE CEO’S CORNER
A NEW DECADE OF OPPORTUNITY Welcome to 2020! This is such an exciting time of the year as we move into the next chapter of opportunities to serve our member businesses - the true economic engine of our community. Our mission at the Chamber is to cultivate Sarasota’s prosperity and quality of life for our member businesses. So how does our organization go about fulfilling this mission? 1. We deeply care about the needs, strengths and desires of the business community and are willing to work dilligently and passionately to exceed the expectations of our members. Through a cutting-edge platform of meetings, events and programs, we will be providing new ways for our members and the business community to come together in 2020. These programs will connect, help to inform and educate, and build a network of go-to resources. We have reworked our councils to allow members to volunteer and engage at a deeper level with the Chamber.
Sponsored by: Kerkering, Barberio & Co.
2. We address issues that affect small and large businesses by advocating for policy at all levels of government. This year we are partnering with the Florida Chamber of Commerce to launch the Institute for Public Policy. This is an opportunity for individuals interested in holding a public office, both locally and beyond, to learn how to begin the process of involvement. The overall impact of this Institute, then, is the development of candidates who are knowledgeable about the issues facing the business community. 3. We address the workforce and talent needs of our member businesses. Through CareerEdge, we are bringing new opportunities for upskilling workers, creating fast-track trainings, and building a platform of data/demographics on our region for businesses to use in planning and operating their businesses. 4. We care about community and making sure that the quality of life we currently enjoy continues. Partnering with other local organizations on issues and programming is a priority for 2020. Creating new ways for people to engage in our community through partnerships and collaboration is core to our mission of serving the Sarasota region. Thank you for being a treasured member of our organization and believing in the work that we are doing. Our entire team are here to serve you, and we look forward to another strong and productive decade.

Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce Advocates for Local Businesses at State and Federal Level For nearly one hundred years, the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce has advocated for local business interests in our region by meeting with local, state and federal legislators on priorities that will continue to create a positive business and economic climate in Sarasota county and the surrounding regions. This Fall, the work continued as members of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce and staff went to Tallahassee to share the Chamber’s legislative agenda for 2020, which represents the topics and issues that are most important to our 1,200+ member businesses. Prior to the trip to Tallahassee, the Chamber convened with multiple regional organizations to work together on crafting a unified

regional agenda. To accomplish this, local business organizations gave input, helped prioritize issues and created a united collective message for our local legislators. The outcome was a streamlined and strategic outline of priorities for the regional business community to focus on when meeting with our local and state legislators. This legislative agenda was first presented in September at the Sarasota Delegation meeting, and then again in one on one appointments with legislators in Tallahassee in the first week of November. The Chamber also hosted delegates from Manatee and Sarasota Counties at a joint reception hosted in partnership with the Manatee Chamber of Commerce, which was a great event
that showcased the way our community works together to think and act on a regional level. The work continued as the Chamber took our voice to federal legislators in Washington D.C. Mireya Eavey, the Chamber’s Executive Vice President of CareerEdge and Jennifer Behrens, President of Atlantic Mold, a locally owned manufacturer, joined more than 75 business leaders from about 25 states in Washington D.C. to speak with members of Congress and their staff – urging them to invest in skills training to expand economic opportunities for working families, help meet the workforce needs of local business and industry, and make our country more competitive in a 21st century global economy.

Insurance Update - CareerEdge in partnership with
educators, employers, Florida Association of Insurance Agents (FAIA), and community agencies continues to work on its insurance industry community-wide plan in support of workforce system change addressing awareness, branding, training and placement of workers. Last year, CareerEdge funded an insurance skill gap study that confirmed concerns employers were voicing around the state in recruiting talent to the industry. CareerEdge convened an insurance collaborative made of the partners to discuss pain points like attracting workers to the insurance industry. The Insurance Collaborative agreed its first area of focus would be developing a branding campaign, #insureyourfuture, to demystify insurance and recruit talent. This fall CareerEdge launched a 15 insurance video series to be used by employers and educators to promote insurance as a career. The videos feature firsthand accounts of the diverse opportunities found in the insurance industry.
Sarasota Chamber Partners with Technical Schools to Bring Awareness of the Opportunities in Engineering Careers Over 120 students from area schools and 25 engineers from prominent local organizations gathered at the fifth annual Experience Engineering Luncheon, presented by the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce and Sarasota County Schools Career and Technical Education. In addition to sharing their passion for engineering, engineers shared individualized insight into engineering as a career path and their experience in round table discussions with students.
“Increasing the supply of future engineers both overall and with greater diversity will benefit all Sarasota businesses.” -Don Borden, Owner of Four Winds Network Services
CareerEdge’s plan offers additional resources that are accessible to the entire community, developed through community-wide collaboration. CareerEdge is working with Sarasota County Schools on an Insurance Career Awareness month and recently piloted a 4-40 Insurance Customer Service Representative Fast Track training that included soft-skills for 11 participants in partnership with the Women’s Resource Center and the State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota. All participants have successfully completed the CSR4-40 exam and are ready for careers in the insurance industry. CareerEdge worked to have a 4-40 Insurance Customer Service training added to the curriculum at Suncoast Technical College. Spanning into next year, CareerEdge is developing a call-toaction insurance luncheon at local technical schools to further understand and advocate for the needs of employers and the community. The videos are available for download at: https://www.youtube. com/playlist?list=PLPtBNFdc4mgtsloUThbEb-vZ9K1EjUIHS.
“The Experience Engineering Luncheon gets better every year… the students were engaged and asked great questions. Increasing the supply of future engineers both overall and with greater diversity will benefit all Sarasota businesses. Thank you to the Sarasota Chamber for helping raise awareness of the importance of technology with our local High School students,” commented Don Borden, Owner of Four Winds Network Services. The luncheon is one of several workforce initiatives lead by the Chamber to explore career opportunities in partnership with Sarasota County Schools. The next initiative will begin in February, addressing the workforce needs within the insurance industry by educating high schoolers on insurance as a career.
