Miami Shores women continue their “takeover” of our downtown Village and beyond - paving the way and not looking back. They lead with determination and solidarity. Together, they support and empower each other, recognizing that their collective strength is undeniable. Building upon the legacy of earlier female entrepreneurs in the Village, such as May’s Village Travel and The Naughty Needle, figures like Agnes Barber Blake, President of the People’s Bank on 2nd Avenue; Ellen Spears Harris, Executive of the Shoreland Corporation; Illah M. Sexton, owner of an Overhead Door franchise right outside of the Shores (known as I.M. Sexton to conceal her gender), Miami Shores’ dressmaker, Beatriz J. Herdocia of Beatriz Originals…blazing trails in their respective fields, setting a precedent. Much like today, women making a home while also forging a path, banding together to revitalize our village’s downtown, and further bolstering our overall business sector.
During the photo session for this cover story, I couldn’t help but smile and marvel at the camaraderie that exists between these eleven beautiful women. It was palpable, so organic and genuine. Definitely an “It Takes a Village” moment perfectly captured. Their collective goal: to uplift one another and continue shaping our Village into the “live, work, play,” destination it is meant to be.
For the last three years, the Greater Miami Shores Chamber of Commerce Egret magazine has highlighted and celebrated women-owned businesses, specifically during Women’s History Month. This year we include eleven; however, it is important to mention that there are many more that we hope to include in the future. They are all to be celebrated and praised. According to the National Women’s History Alliance, the theme this year is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.” Let us take to the calling and ensure that we play our part. We have much to celebrate.

John and Iris Cirinese moved back from North Carolina to South Florida in 1977 to support John’s father and assist with the shop following an accident. With a heritage steeped in shoe cobbling from both sides of the family, John has been immersed in the master craft since childhood. Barry University hosted this years Greater Miami Shores Chamber annual board meeting at Buckey’s on campus.
Our first “Chamber Chat” was held at Rustic French Home, with guest speakers Mayor Burch, Village Manager, Esmond Scott & Chief Golt.
The 2024 Mayor’s Gala, presented by Miami Shores Community Alliance, was enjoyed by all at the Miami Shores Country Club. It was a spectacular night of dining, dancing and amazing people.
