New taquitos rolling into Restaurant Row

There's room at the table for everyone,' is how
Jon and Sarah Ramos saw Lakewood's Restaurant Row in scouting locations for their second Roll-Em Up Taquitos fast-ca sual restaurant.

Franchise owners, Jon and Sarah just opened up their first restaurant in Bell Gardens. Lakewood will be their second location, and they have a third one going up in the City of Norwalk.

Everything on the Roll-Em Up Taquitos menu is fresh, said Sarah, when asked what sets them apart from other taco-inspired restaurants. Aside from not selling hard-shell tacos, at Roll-Em Up Taquitos, every taquito 'enrollado' is rolled and handmade daily.

other and they're all doing great. Lakewood is proof that there's always room at the table for all of us anywhere, and we're are excited to open in Lakewood."
"Our taquitos are made fresh with every order," said Sarah. "Everybody loves fresh taquitos; they are a food that we all wish we had time to go home and make for our family, but we don't and that's why we're here to fill that void."
Are they like your grandma's taquitos, "no way," said Jon.

Mayor Ariel Pe
Safety First! School starting again.
It’s that special time of year again, when kids are heading back to classrooms full of energy and enthusiasm for the school year ahead.
It’s also that time when all of us need to remind ourselves to be careful when driving, especially around schools.
Slow down and look out for children walking and biking to and from school.
While the City of Lakewood does not operate the local schools, the city works closely with the four school districts and private schools that serve Lakewood students.
One of our city’s biggest contributions is with safety, especially in getting students to and from school.
The city employs crossing guards to work at busy intersections, especially those close to elementary schools.
The city also devotes many hours of Deputy Sheriff patrol time to student safety near schools. Recently, we hired a second Deputy Sheriff devoted to traffic safety to further increase the amount of focus we provide to this important, life-saving task.
You’ll see our Deputy Sheriffs and civilian Community Safety Officers out in force in the coming weeks (and continuing throughout the school year), working hard to get parents and students into good, safe habits as drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
There aren’t enough of them of course to be in front of every school all the time, so it’s
important that each of us set a good example for other drivers, especially around schools and children.
For parents, this is a good time to remind your children about everything safety related, from bike riding to crossing streets. To help, the City of Lakewood provides Suggested Routes to School maps, at www.lakewoodcity.org/BackToSchool.
Back-to-school season is also a good time to consider whether you can help support our Lakewood students. There are a number of ways to do so.
The Lakewood Education Foundation (LEF) raises and distributes funds for classroom improvement projects in Lakewood. Grants of about $500 each provide extra teaching tools that enhance the learning experience in Lakewood class-
rooms.
The Lakewood Pan American Association raises funds for higher education scholarships for high school graduates from Lakewood.
And Project Shepherd operates a charity drive every fall to provide a backpack full of school supplies to economically disadvantaged children in Lakewood.
Thank you to the Rotary Club of Lakewood and to the dozens of other donors—large and small—who help with this wonderful annual Lakewood tradition.

To donate, now or in the future, to any of these educational charities focused on Lakewood students, go to www. lakewoodcity.org/donate.
September also brings one of the most solemn times of the
year to our nation and to Lakewood. On September 11th, Lakewood residents gather at sunset outside of City Hall for a solemn ceremony to lower our American flag for the evening, to honor the victims and heroes of that grievous day in 2001, and to say thanks to the men and women who protect and serve us today both here and abroad.
Please feel free to join us at sunset on September 11th.
Details are at www.lakewoodcity.org/PatriotDay or you can call City Hall at 562866-9771.
On behalf of my Lakewood City Council colleagues, I want to wish every Lakewood student—and every family with children in school—the very best for a successful and meaningful academic year ahead.

'Thank a Serviceman' celebrates 10 Years

The City of Lakewood’s ‘Thank a Servicemember’ campaign is celebrating 10 years of collecting over 38,000 cards and letters of appreciation to send to U.S. military servicemembers stationed far from home.
To celebrate this milestone, a community design contest took place to select this year’s postcard artwork. Five designs were selected to adorn the cards that community members can pick up around the city this fall to write their messages of thanks.
The deadline to deliver the cards to City Hall is Fri-
for delivery with care packages to U.S. servicemembers overseas.
Visit www.lakewoodcity.org/TAS to learn how you can get involved. You will also find a list of additional card locations and campaign partners as well as alternative ways to submit your message online.

With military personnel deployment at a historic high despite no major war, your greeting is sure to offer a piece of home to a servicemember experiencing extended time away from their families.

Mental health for Lakewood residents
There is arguably no greater crisis facing our nation than the growing prevalence of mental health challenges. An estimated 26% of Americans ages 18 and older suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder, with nearly 50% of adults ages 18-24 reporting anxiety and depression symptoms.
Sadly, over 50% of Americans who have mental health issues don’t ever get help. The problem is even worse for youth, where 70% of those who need help don’t ever get it.
A big reason for this problem is that accessing the mental health care system and getting seen by a professional can be very cumbersome and complicated, even when you have insurance or an HMO.
To help, the City of Lakewood has contracted on a six-month trial basis with a nationally respected firm called Care Solace, which has a 24/7/365 hotline and website that Lakewood community members can contact--for free--to get a list of mental health professionals who accept their insurance and specialize in the issues they are facing.
Care Solace will even contact those professionals and assist in setting up your appointment, all at no charge, and with total confidentiality. Care Solace is there to take the hassle and difficulty out of getting mental health care, and to make it just as easy to get men-

tal health care as it is to get care for other health ailments.
Even if you don’t have insurance, Care Solace will get you an appointment with a mental health professional at little or no cost to you.
Lakewood residents can access Care Solace services in three ways:
• Call 888-515-7881 at any time. Support is available in 200+ languages. A Care Companion will help you every step of the way to research options, secure appointments and follow up to make sure it is a good fit.
• Search anonymously at www.caresolace.com/ LakewoodCA
• Contact the City of Lakewood at (562) 866-9771, ext. 2140 and they can submit a confidential referral on your behalf.
“We want to measure how many Lakewood community members use Care Solace and how helpful they find it,” said Lakewood City Manager Thaddeus McCormack, “so the city can decide whether to continue our contract past our six-month trial. We have set up a survey website where you can an-
swer a few questions completely confidentially (without leaving your name or email address) if you use Care Solace. That website is www.lakewoodcity.org/ CareSolace.”
“In addition,” said McCormack, “we understand that the conditions in which we live deeply affect our mental health. If any Lakewood community members are in need of food, housing or affordable medical and dental care, and are eligible for social services support, Care Solace can help you access those resources. Call the number above for help. Each of us needs to commit to prioritizing our mental health, and at the City of Lakewood we want to do our part to help, and we’re excited to be partnering in that effort with Care Solace.”
Remember: Care Solace is not an emergency response service or a direct mental health provider. If you have a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 or the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

BUSD's New Superintendent's Back to School letter to families

Dear Students, Staff, Parents, and Beloved Community Members,
As we stand on the threshold of a new school year, we extend a heartfelt welcome back to the Bellflower Unified School District family!
The familiar rhythm of bustling hallways, eager students, and dedicated educators reminds us of the vibrant energy that defines our community. We are overjoyed to have you with us once again, as we embark on a journey filled with growth, discovery, and boundless opportunities.
Our commitment to your safety remains unwavering, and we are excited to share some impactful developments that will further enhance our learning environment.
First and foremost, we extend our gratitude to the 4,100 participants who shared their invaluable insights through the safety survey. Your feedback has guided us in adopting new safety protocols,
ensuring that each student, staff member, and visitor feels secure and supported.
Among the measures we will implement for the 2023-2024 school year: Parent Workshops on Student Safety: We recognize the importance of transparent communication with our parents and guardians. To foster a deeper understanding of safety protocols, we will host workshops that empower you with the knowledge needed to ensure the well-being of our students.
Detection Canines and Visitor Management System: Our commitment to safety is exemplified by the introduction of detection canines at secondary schools and a sophisticated visitor management system at our front offices. These measures underscore our dedication to maintaining a secure and welcoming environment.
Active Shooter Training: In the pursuit of preparedness, we are investing in additional active

shooter training for our administration and staff. This comprehensive training equips our team with the tools and know-how to respond effectively in any situation.
Redesigned Website and Enhanced Social Media Presence: This December, get ready to explore our redesigned website, a platform that will provide you with easier access to information and resources. Our revitalized social media presence will keep you informed about the latest news, events, and achievements across our district.
Improved Parent Communication Through Parent Square: In the spirit of strengthening our partnership with parents, we are piloting an improved parent communication program through Parent Square at three of our school sites.

Enhanced Accessibility to Board Meetings: Recognizing the importance of inclusive participation, we are excited to introduce Spanish interpretation during our live-streamed board meetings to start on a date yet to be determined this 23-24 school year.
As we journey through this academic year, we invite you to participate in shaping our new strategic plan through a process I will conduct involving student reps, parents, staff members, and the larger community. Our community's values and priorities will guide us as we chart a course towards improvement and innovation through the establishment of a 5-year strategic plan to be adopted by the school board in the spring. Through collaborative efforts, research-based initiatives, and your continued dedication, we will collectively lay the foundation for a bright future.
Our schools are not just places of learning; they are vibrant centers of inspiration, discovery, and growth. Together, we will shape a future that mirrors our shared aspirations, where innovation and collaboration thrive.

Welcome back to the Bellflower Unified School District – where safety, communication, and education converge in a symphony of possibility.

With anticipation and warmth, Ben Drati, Ed.D Superintendent, Bellflower Unified School District

Roll-Em Up Taquitos rolling into Lakewood
"No one makes taquitos like our grandmothers used to make them, but they're pretty close."

From both the OC and the Whittier areas, Jon and Sarah said that it was the fresh elements of the menu that sold them on investing in Roll-Em Up Taquitos.
"Sarah is a hard sell," said Jon about Sarah's taste in food. "She doesn't like just anything. But she tried it and loved it and so she tried it again to see if she'd like it a second time, and she was sold. This was over a year ago, and every time she tried it, she loved it."
Not only was the timing perfect to invest in a restaurant as a family now that their children are grown, but the market for specialty food restaurants has also grown exponentially over the last couple of years, said Sarah.

After Covid, people honed in on their specialty crafts, desserts, foods, products, and the world responded. "We love specialty foods, especially when they're homemade or handmade," said Sarah. "From baked potatoes to cookies to donuts, people have honed in on their craft and they have found a winner. Roll-Em Up Taquitos is exactly that - we've honed in on hand-rolled, fresh,
delicious taquitos and families love them."
Working from what is called a 'focused menu', on average, RollEm Up Taquitos estimates making approximately 3,500 taquitos every day. Signature menu items are taquitos with five filling options, beef, chicken, potato, cheese and avocado, in either corn, or flour tortillas. Another highlight on the Roll-Em Up Taquito Menu is their Mexican street corn and for dessert, they offer their original churro doughnuts.
Located near the intersection of Candlewood and Clark streets in Lakewood, Jon and Sarah are anticipating a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for their

restaurant in the next couple of months.

"People have options of places to eat every day," said Jon. "But once they try Roll-Em Up Taquitos, they will be hooked. We don't pretend to make taquitos like our grandmothers made them, but there's something nostalgic about them that people love."
Jon gives all of the credit to the freshness. "Nothing on our menu comes out of a freezer in some warehouse somewhere," he said. "Every taquito is pan-fried on the spot. You can taste the fresh texture in the tortilla, that's my favorite part."
Jon and Sarah both come from retail backgrounds. In fact, Sarah's
family used to own La Quebradita stores in the East Los Angeles region. She grew up working in those stores, she added. "We always knew we wanted to start our own business, but we didn't know what, until we found this," said Sarah. "More importantly, with Roll-Em Up we found something we love and something that caters to our communities. I grew up very community oriented and so in finding a business for us, it needed to have a community feel to it."
The husband and wife team love that the Roll-Em Up Taquitos menu brings a different Mexican food flair to Lakewood. In researching a market, you have to make sure that you're different ... it's like coming out with a new type of liquor .... what makes you stand out," said Jon, echoing his favorite quote by Steve Jobs, 'It's more fun being a pirate than joining the Navy.' "Lakewood has a mixture of everything, but there's nothing like eating freshly made golden brown, delicious taquitos like your grandma used to make. I believe that's what's going to make us stand out. We're excited for our opening ... we're looking forward to being a part of Lakewood's Restaurant Row family."

Non-profits Celebrated
In honor of National NonProfit Day, last month the Greater Lakewood Chamber of Commerce joined forces with F&M Bank and the City of Lakewood to celebrate 11 of the City of Lakewood's most active nonprofit organizations for their commitment to their community.

Spearheaded by GLCC Vice Chair Joanie Dixson, the GLCC dedicated its August Mixer to Lakewood Service Clubs, at F&M Bank. Dixson, who is also First Vice President of F&M Bank, said that she wanted to F&M to host a mixer but wanted it to be more

than just a networking event.

Given F&M Bank's motto is 'service above self,' Dixson said that she wanted to host an event that celebrated service clubs in the City, whose members are strictly volunteers. "It was a vision that came to reality," Dixson said. "Service Clubs in the City of Lakewood are the backbone of this community; when there is a need, no matter the size, the service clubs are at the front of the line ready to help."
Service Clubs, also known as non-profit organizations, recognized for giving back to the City

of Lakewood, included: the Lakewood Family YMCA, the Women's Club, the Lakewood Rotary Club, Pathways to Hospice, the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, the Lakewood Jaycees, the Lakewood Pan-American Association, the Soroptimist International, Meals on Wheels of Long Beach/Lakewood, Su Casa End-

Dedication
ing Domestic Violence, and the Human Services Association.

Dixson is also a member of the Soroptimist Club, the Lakewood Women's Club, and is a Board Member for the Lakewood Family YMCA.
"The volunteerism in Lakewood is stellar, I've never seen anything like this, and these are people who give of their time freely and without ever asking for anything in return," said Dixson. "These non-profits may be small, but they are mighty and deserve a day just for them."

Dixson thanks the City of Lake-

wood partnership in bringing this event to fruition.
"This event was an amazing example of the things we can do for our community when we work together," said GLCC President & CEO, Jose Solache. "The nonprofit organizations in the City of Lakewood are the heart of this community and it was our honor, as a non-profit ourselves, to celebrate the people behind our Service Clubs - the people who make time to give back to their community. You don't find that everywhere. Lakewood, I hope you know how blessed you are."
Friends of Lakewood Libraries seeking volunteers, planning Fall Book Sale

In an era marked by rapid technological advancements, libraries stand as steadfast symbols of knowledge, culture, and unity within communities.
These revered institutions go beyond their traditional roles as repositories of books, they serve as vital center that bolster democracy and diversity, offer rich volunteer opportunities and provides unparalleled access to a world of information.

The Friends of the Lakewood Libraries aims to enhance the programs, services and materials of our libraries, Angelo M. Iacoboni on Clark Avenue next to the Centre and George Nye, Jr. on Del Amo Blvd next to Boyar Park, through public awareness,
cultural programs and private funding. Engaging in library volunteerism not only gives to the community but also provides opportunity for personal growth, skill development and a sense of accomplishment.
In line with this spirit of volunteerism, we are preparing to hold our annual Fall Book Sale at the Iacoboni Library on Friday, October 20 and Saturday, October 21.
Check out our web site www.lakewoodlibraryfriends.org or come to our book store inside the Iacoboni Library for membership info. Both the book sale and book

store offer opportunities to acquire cherished books at bargain prices. Visitors can explore a wide range of genres, from classic literature to contemporary
bestsellers, catering to readers of all ages and interests.
More information will be available in the October issue, and our website.

Meet the Mayor

PLEASE NOTE: There will be NO Family Markets during Labor Day Weekend. Thank you.

The City of Lakewood is inviting the community to submit art or poetry which celebrates and inspires diversity in coordination with the third annual “Fest-of-All” multicultural food & music festival.
Lakewood is one of the most broadly diverse cities in the County, with a variety and composition of races, ethnicities and cultures that closely mirrors the county as a whole. In fact, Lakewood has been named one of the most broadly diversifying communities in the state. Elementary, middle and high school students can share a piece of their community, culture and customs with a drawing, sketch, painting or through words of poetry. We hope to learn about the many families, traditions and backgrounds that make up our Lakewood community.
Each submission (one per student) will receive a coupon to a local Lakewood restaurant and be displayed at Lakewood Center mall starting Oct. 9 and at Lakewood’s third annual “Fest-of-All” multicultural food & music festival on Saturday, Oct. 14, also at Lakewood Center. Submissions are due Thursday, Sept. 28 by 5 p.m. to City Hall (Recreation and Community Services Department) at 5050 Clark Ave. or email them to Jade Vasquez at jadevasquez@lakewoodcity.org. You can also email Jade with questions or call her at 562-8669771, ext. 2801.

for a few months now, and has excellent reviews online, but the grand opening ceremony, for her, made it official - especially because her mother Eddy was present and led a prayer for her daughter's small business before the Ribbon Cutting.
"It feels official, it feels wonderful," said Patty. "I loved that my family was here and my friends came out, and to see my customers come
out to celebrate us because they love our food, feels surreal. I can't believe the Mayor and the City Council came out, too .... that was special."
Patty owned a restaurant in the Bixby Knolls area over 20 years ago, but it wasn't until recently that she decided she wanted to open up a new restaurant.
Patty is at her restaurant daily and she personally will take an order and cook it right there on the spot.
Patty is grateful for how welcoming the City of Lakewood and its residents have been to her and said she is in awe of the love her customers have for her southern style cooking. Asked if her recipes were recipes taught to her by her mother? "Yes, of course, but I added a little here and there and made them my own," she said. Nonetheless, after the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, Patty's mom, Eddy, couldn't hold her tears back. She said they were happy tears and didn't know how else to show her happiness for her daughter in opening her own restaurant.

Golf tournament to help Lakewood schools
You can help stu dents attending Lakewood schools by supporting the Lakewood Education Foundation (LEF) Golf Tournament on Friday, Oct. 20. And, you don’t even have to play golf to support the cause!
Through the generous donations of Lakewood residents and businesses, LEF was able to donate over $45,000 last year in
grants of up to $500 to dozens of local teachers for classroom improvement projects. These grants provided electronic tablets, microscopes and other science equipment; art and physical education supplies; books of all kinds and reading levels; and a variety of classroom technology such as Apple TVs and microphones.

Here’s how you can help to fund teacher requests this year:
-Play golf (or sponsor another golfer, such as a high school student) at the Oct. 20 tournament, starting at 1 p.m. at the Lakewood Country Club. The entry fee of $145 includes greens fees, golf cart, pre-tournament lunch, goodie bag and on-course small bites and beverages.

-Visit www.lakewoodcity.org/LEFGolf to support the event in any of these ways:
-Register for the golf tournament
-Take advantage of sponsorship opportunities
-Buy a “Tee Sign” with your name/message for $100
-Purchase raffle tickets
-Donate a raffle prize of merchandise or a gift card worth $25 or more.
The non-profit LEF is run by volunteers in Lakewood and is dedicated to improving educational opportunities for local students. Watch a video about LEF at www.lakewoodcity. org/LEFvideo.

September is National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, and the City of Lakewood encourages residents to use this time as a good opportunity to prepare their homes and families for a potential emergency.

Emergencies can happen while you are: At work – or your children are at school; Asleep in the middle of the night; Driving; or on vacation.

Because emergencies are unpredictable, it’s important to take the time to prepare. Knowing where to start can feel over-
whelming, but taking small steps now is the key to being ready when the time comes.

The City of Lakewood has posted helpful resources at www. lakewoodcity.org/DisasterPrep, including a 30-minute online version of the popular Survive for 7 course.

You can also take the city’s free Survive for 7 in-person course to learn more what you need to have on hand to survive a disaster for seven days. Check www.lakewoodcity.org/Survivefor7 for the next event.

National Hispanic Heritage Month
During National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, the histories and cultures of American citizens whose ancestors hail from Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain are celebrated, with the starting date coinciding with several Latin American nations recognizing their independence on Sept 15.

It is undeniable: Hispanic culture had deeply enriched American culture—be it through food, art, music or the substantial contributions of millions of people who are of Hispanic descent.
A key element of Lakewood's Community Dialogue on Race, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion is celebrating the diversity of cultures that Lakewood is proud to have as part of its community. While the Hispanic population in the United States is our nation’s largest racial or ethnic minority at nearly 19% of the total population, at least 33% of Lakewood residents are Hispanic.
The City of Lakewood proudly joins the federal government, state

government and hundreds of public and private organizations in paying tribute to National Hispanic Heritage Month.
HispanicHeritageMonth.gov, a collaborative web portal project be tween multiple agencies including the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian and National Ar chives, offers a trove of infor mation related to commemoration, including special exhibits and collections, audio, videos and images.
Staff in the Library of Congress’s Hispanic Reading Room help researchers find materials Hispanic Heritage. Luckily, you don’t have to be in Washington D.C. to enjoy access-the library’s comprehensive research guides are readily available online.
Locally, both Iacoboni Library and Nye Library in Lakewood will have a book display in honor of the com-
memoration and are offering a takehome activity kit for adults inspired by Mesoamerican masks. Adult participants can pick up a kit from the library, watch the video on YouTube from a provided link, learn about the significance of these works of art to the ancient cultures of Mexico and Central America and complete the activity on their own "selfpaced" time. Available while supplies last.
Iacoboni Library will also have a special Baby Band practice featuring Latin artists! Baby Band is held on Thursdays at 10 a.m. for ages 0 - 24 months and their caregivers.
The Los Angeles County Library has compiled a variety of resources to learn, watch, read and get crafty during National Hispanic Heritage Month. Visit LACountylibrary.org/ hispanic-heritage-month.
Happy Birthday Shirley!
Longtime Lakewood resident Shirley Miller's 104th birthday celebration included a visit from Lakewood Mayor Ariel Pe who brought a city certificate and flowers, on behalf of his Lakewood City Council colleagues, to honor Shirley on her special day.
Neighbors came from up and down the block to wish Shirley well. She’s recently stopped her daily walks, but is still so healthy she doesn’t need to be on any medications. On Friday evenings, Shirley
and her daughter Jackie join the families next door to watch movies and socialize, but Shirley makes sure she’s home to watch the Lawrence Welk show at 6 o’clock.
Shirley has lived in her Lakewood home since 1959, and rode her bike daily through the neighborhood until she was well into her nineties.
Congratulations Shirley on reaching this special milestone in life…and for making Lakewood your home for 64 years!
