CITY
Mayor Todd Rogers
the state of our city
As I write to you, I’m putting the finishing touches on the speech I’ll give at Lakewood’s annual State of the City event on Feb. 26 at The Centre.
I’ll start by repeating something I’ve said often in my time on the City Council and in my career with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and that is: the #1 priority of a local government is creating and maintaining a safe community.
Nothing else good can happen in a community if you don’t have public safety.
You and your family can’t enjoy the parks…or go out to eat or shop locally…or even
take a carefree walk around the block for relaxation or exercise if your community doesn’t feel safe.
That’s why public safety is always the top priority for me and the entire City Council in Lakewood.
I’ll talk about all the extra things we do at the city to keep Lakewood just as safe as we possibly can. That includes lots of traditional and time-tested tools…and new and innovative ones too.
Living in a safe community is why so many people have moved to Lakewood over the years…and why so many have stayed here for generations…and we want to keep it that way!

I’ll also talk about all the things we do to make Lakewood a fun place to live!
That includes our recreation and community service programs designed for all ages. It also includes the two park playgrounds we modernized this past year, and we have plans for more later this year! We’re renovating the Weingart Senior Center starting this year. And our recreation staff continues to organize lots of opportunities for residents to come together and enjoy life in Lakewood at events like the Pan Am Fiesta, the Civic Center Block Party, Concerts in the Park, Fest-of-All, and the Holiday Tree Lighting.
Our City Manager, Thaddeus McCormack, will follow me with remarks about what our city is doing to boost the creation and expansion of businesses in Lakewood.
Lakewood has a unique challenge in that regard. It’s what we sometimes call the “6% Challenge.”
And that’s the fact that only 6% of our land in Lakewood is devoted to commerce…a very small amount for any city. It’s because we’re a largely residential city, which of course has its benefits, However, it means we’re not going to have the number of new business openings you might see every year in other cities.
But despite that challenge, Lakewood remains an attractive place for many business owners and entrepreneurs to locate in and invest their time, money, hard work and talent. And at the city we work hard to
make their new business construction or renovation go as smoothly and quickly as possible.
This past year saw a notable new opening with “Sender One” in the former Office Max across the street from Lakewood Center on Lakewood Blvd. Sender One provides wall climbing experiences for first-time youth and families looking for a fun time…and for climbing enthusiasts as well.
We’re very pleased that the owner of Sender One has praised Lakewood’s business-friendly approach, highlighting the support she received throughout the process of obtaining permits, and saying that unlike her experiences in other cities, Lakewood staff provided hands-on guidance and made the process seamless and efficient. That’s what we like to hear, and how we want to foster a welcoming environment for businesses.
There’s another notable economic development being built now in Lakewood and that’s “The Drive”—a fourbuilding commercial project on Carson St. at Obispo Ave., just east of Walmart. It’s the biggest commercial development in Lakewood in 25 years. It will house medical and professional offices along with retail shops and bring about 200 jobs to our city.
And we’re wrapping up the creation of our first-ever “Economic Development Strategic Plan,” crafted with the help of an expert economic firm. In the near future, we’ll finalize the report and publicize it to

our residents, along with the recommendations that we’re going to pursue to boost our city economy even more. Stay tuned for that!
To see the full remarks I made at the State of the City, along with those from other speakers, go to www. lakewoocity.org/SOTC. There, you can also see Lakewood CityTV’s always informative and entertaining Annual Report video. CityTV captured some great video of many of the wonderful and touching events in Lakewood this past year. Everything from our community coming out strong to raise a new flag over our Veterans Memorial…to our local kids loving the new park playgrounds…and capping it all off with the 605 All-Star Band parading through town. The video and the State of the City highlight some of the special moments that once again made Lakewood a special community this past year…and show how our city will stay busy in 2025 doing everything we can to keep Lakewood a great place to live, work and visit…now and into the future.

Volunteer Day seeking project sites
One of Lakewood’s enduring traditions is Volunteer Day, where residents help their neighbors in need and make their community a better place.
The Volunteer Day program is looking for project sites for its Satur¬day, April 12 cleanup and fix-up event. More than 300 volunteers will fan out that day to locations throughout Lakewood to donate a morning’s work to help their neighbors in need. Teams of volun¬teer workers from scout troops, schools, clubs, businesses, organizations and religious congregations will assist residents who are unable to maintain their properties themselves.
Recipients of Volunteer Day aid can be seniors or persons of any age who, because of a disability or limited means, need some neighborly help to make their Lakewood yard or home exterior a little nicer. Work can include gardening, yard cleanup or minor painting.
The proposed project sites are reviewed by city staff for eligibility and suit¬ability. If you, or someone you know, can benefit from a Volunteer
Day cleanup project and meet the selec¬tion criteria, please go to www.lakewoodcity.org/ volunteerdaysite to submit an application online, or call the Burns Community Center at 562-925-7512.

nominate your home for lakewood beautiful

The Lakewood Beautiful program honors Lakewood residents who take extra care to keep their homes and yards (and local neighborhoods) looking great.
You can help recognize those Lakewood residents who go “above and beyond” to keep their home and yards looking beautiful by submitting a nomination
form by 5 p.m. on March 20.
There are four ways the city honors homes in the Lakewood Beautiful program:
• Beautiful Home Award. This is the city’s most traditional award, which has honored hundreds of Lakewood homes over five decades. This award recognizes the front facing

exterior and landscaping of a home, displaying exceptional care and pride of ownership.
• Jackie Rynerson “Transformation Award.”
This honors homeowners who have remodeled the front-facing exterior and landscaping of their property withinthepastthreeyears. The rejuvenation need not have been expensive or elaborate, but something that improves or enhances the overall property. The bulk of the improvements must have been done or overseen by the current homeowner, not a prior homeowner. Nominations must include “before” and “after” photos to demonstrate the transformation (digital photos may be uploaded to the online nomination form). Homes being marketed for sale are not eligible. Jackie Rynerson was an original Lakewood resident and city council member from 1978
to 1990, and she created the original Lakewood Beautiful to inspire and honor Lakewood homeowners.
• Neat and Tidy Award. This newest category was added to recognize homeowners who are consistent with maintaining their landscaping and a clean home exterior.
• Water-Wise Award. This honors beautiful homes nominated in one of the first three categories that deserve extra recognition for landscaping that utilizes water-conserving irrigation devices and plantings.
As a guide, past Lakewood Beautiful winning homes have been distinguished not just by attractive style, but for displaying exceptional care and pride of ownership, such as:
• Neat, clean and wellmaintained exteriors.
Spring Break Day Camp

Spring Break Day Camp is a program for children ages 6-12, and will be offered at Mayfair and Palms Parks. Camp will take place Monday-Friday, April 1418 at Mayfair Park, and Monday-Friday, April 21-25 at Palms Park.
Drop-off each day is between 7 and 9 a.m., and pickup is between 4 and 6 p.m.
The program will provide supervised activities from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on a 1:12 staff-
• Good use of plant variety, texture and color.
• Attention to detail.
• Overall consistent care of property and landscaping.
Studies show that home upkeep and beautification by caring, committed residents keeps crime rates low and property values healthy, thereby benefitting the whole community.
To nominate a home, visit www.lakewoodcity.org/ LakewoodBeautiful or call City Hall at 562-866-9771, ext. 3123. The nomination deadline is 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 20.
After the nomination deadline, photos are taken by a professional photographer of the street-facing portion of each home and yard. A panel of judges then reviews the photos and determines if the home will be recognized.
• Landscaping design of front yard and parkway in harmony and balance with the home.
to-camper ratio.
Programmed activities will include a variety of arts and crafts, outdoor sports, indoor games and specialized activities.
The fees for camp will be $180 for Lakewood residents, and $195 for nonresidents and will include an excursion to Medieval Times on Thursday, April 17 and Friday, April 25.
To register, visit www. lakewoodcity.org/ecatalog and search with the keyword “camp.” For more information, call 562-8669771, ext. 2408.

In Honor of Women’s History Month
Vice Mayor Cassandra Chase Appointed President of Women’s Caucus for the League of California Cities In a achievement for both local leadership and statewide representation, Vice Mayor Cassandra Chase has been appointed as the President of the Women’s Caucus of the League of California Cities (Cal Cities). This appointment comes at a pivotal time, as we celebrate Women’s History Month and recognize the transformative power of women in leadership roles.
The League of California Cities plays a crucial role in advocating for the common interests of California’s cities. Representing nearly 500 cities across the state, Cal Cities provides education, resources, and advocacy efforts to support local governments. Its mission is to expand and protect local control, ensuring that cities have the authority and resources to provide essential services and foster thriving communities.
Within Cal Cities, the Women’s Caucus serves as a vital platform promoting the leadership and influence of women in municipal government. It provides support, networking opportunities, and resources to help women leaders advance policies that address issues impacting women, families, and communities statewide. The caucus also works to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders in government.
Vice Mayor Chase’s appointment to this role holds profound significance. As Vice Mayor, Chase has demonstrated a deep commitment to community engagement, equity, and forward-thinking policies. Her new statewide leadership position amplifies the voice of the City of Lakewood on a broader stage, fostering connections that can bring additional resources, ideas, and opportunities back home.
This achievement highlights the broader significance of local leaders serving in statewide roles. When city leaders like Vice Mayor Chase step into these positions, they bring with them the unique perspectives and challenges of their communities. Their leadership ensures that local needs and priorities are represented in statewide conversations, fostering more inclusive and effective governance.
As we observe Women’s History Month, Vice Mayor Chase’s appointment reminds us of the critical role women play in shaping California’s future. Her leadership at both the city and state levels serves as an inspiration, paving the way for more women to pursue leadership roles and make a lasting impact in their communities.
Congratulations to Vice Mayor Cassandra Chase on this welldeserved appointment—a testament to her dedication, leadership, and vision for a more equitable and empowered California.

City website updating to www.lakewoodca.gov

The City of Lakewood is changing from the lakewoodcity. org domain to lakewoodca.gov as of March 1, to enhance security and be in alignment with best practices.
All U.S. cities are required to make this change by 2029, and many neighboring cities are already in the process of changing. Lakewood is among the first, as city staff determined it was most cost effective to make the transition now in parallel with other software and security upgrades.
Visitors to the city’s website will not notice any difference in service as a result of this change, as the current lakewoodcity. org website will automatically redirect visitors to the new lakewoodca.gov domain. Emails to city addresses that end in lakewoodcity.org will continue to work and be automatically redirected to the corresponding address at lakewoodca.gov.
With questions about the change, call Lakewood’s customer service staff at 562-866-9771, ext. 2140.
Daddy/Daughter Date Night
Dads and daughters (ages five and older) can register now for the annual Daddy/ Daughter Date Night happening Friday, April 4, 6-9 p.m. at The Centre. This year’s theme is “Friday Night Lights” so each dad and daughter duo can dress in their best football and cheerleader outfits.
This fun evening includes a delicious dinner, followed by

dancing to a popular DJ as well as exciting contests throughout the evening, including the crowning of the King and Princess. All guests will receive a keepsake daddy/daughter photo. Registration is $45 per Lakewood resident and $55 per nonresident. Each dad and daughter should register individually. For more information, or to sign up for this event, call 562866-9771, ext. 2408 or sign up at www.lakewoodcity.org/ ecatalog using activity #30168.

Share your insights on local hazards

Lakewood residents are invited to a community meeting to be held in the Executive Board Room at The Centre, 5000 Clark Ave., at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 24 to provide feedback for Lakewood’s Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP).
The LHMP, which must be updated every five years, is designed to strengthen
community resilience by reducing vulnerability to damage and loss or disruption caused by natural or humanmade hazards.
Residents with valuable firsthand knowledge of local hazards and vulnerabilities are encouraged to share their insights to help the city identify these issues. The city can use the feedback
to evaluate the risks posed by various hazards, identify community vulnerabilities and catalog available resources for risk reduction. This information helps craft strategies to address the unique needs of the Lakewood community and to protect lives and property during disasters.
The LHMP serves as a critical guide for municipalities to improve community resilience. Municipalities are required to develop and periodically update their LHMPs, which must undergo review by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and receive approval from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Bring the entire family out to Palms Park for the Spring Community Car Show on April 11 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. A variety of cars will be displayed along with a food truck, vendors and a kid’s zone.
All cars are welcomed and no entry fee is required. This is a free event to the public.
To register a vehicle, complete a registration form at www.lakewoodcity.org/ carshowregistration.
