COVID testing for Lakewood residents

Lakewood residents have several nearby options for prompt COVID testing. The City of Long Beach runs several sites with free testing, and Lakewood residents are accepted there. The Long Beach website below also includes links to CVS and Rite-Aid, which perform tests at most of their facilities by appointment. Visit https://tinyurl.

com/LBCOVIDtesting for details. A Lakewood urgent care facility is one of the few in our region to offer the FDA-approved COVID-19 Rapid Test that provides results while you wait, usually within 15-30 minutes. Tests are done on a walk-in basis; no appointments. The test is not free, but most PPO insurance plans cover a major portion of the

cost. A copay of $3 to $100 may be required, but for people who need test results rapidly, the Lakewood facility can be very helpful. Urgent Care Pros reports that walk-in lines average from 15 to 60 minutes, with the shortest lines in the afternoons. For details, call 562452-0038 or visit urcarepros.com. In addition, the L.A. County Department of Public Health operates numerous test sites in the region. See information on the county test sites and locations at covid19.lacounty.gov/testing. Public health authorities encourage people who believe they need a test to FIRST contact their primary health care provider to see if they in fact need a test AND to see if a test is available through their provider. ♦

Mayor’s Golf Challenge The Lakewood Education Foundation (LEF) Golf Tournament regrettably has been canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there are still ways to donate. LEF is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving educational opportunities for Lakewood students. LEF provides cash grants of up to $500 to teachers in Lakewood for special supplies and other tools that enhance the education of Lakewood children. All money is distributed in a manner that improves classroom activities; it does not supplant normal school district funding. Special supplies and teaching tools are still important in this COVID era, and your contribution this year will still go a long way to improve the education of students in Lakewood. Even a nominal contribution greatly helps! To creatively encourage donations this year, Mayor Todd Rogers will play two rounds of golf with sponsor representatives in a four-player scramble format. The public can also participate “virtually” in what is being called the “Mayor’s Golf Challenge” and pledge their support for LEF. Here’s how: ▪ Hole in One – 100 squares available at $25 each. Opportunity for one grand prize winner and eight additional prizes valued at a minimum of $50 each.

▪ Pledge for Education – Support LEF and donate based on Todd’s and his golfers’ performance on the course. ✓ You pledge $10 for every birdie they make ✓ $50 for every eagle ✓ $500 for a hole-in-one To pledge, go to www.lakewoodcity.org/mayorsgolfchallenge. You can also make a donation to LEF directly at that website without participating in the Mayor’s Golf Challenge. Pledge for the Hole in One by Nov. 12 at 12 p.m. Pledge for other Mayor’s Golf Challenge support by Nov. 20. With questions, contact Nadhia Flores at 562-866-9771, ext. 2410 or at nflores@lakewoodcity.org. Sponsors for the LEF Mayor’s Golf Challenge are: Gold Sponsors EDCO Waste Management, CJ Construction and the City of Lakewood. Silver sponsors are Assembly Member Anthony Rendon, City Light & Power, F&M Bank, Lakewood Family YMCA, Willdan and
