Burlington employees give an enthusiastic welcome at the grand opening. Burlington, the Fortune 500 clothing chain formerly known as Burlington Coat Factory, opened its new store in the 42,000-squarefoot former Sports Authority building at Lakewood Center on Friday, October 12. Lakewood City Council Members were on hand to assist with the ribbon-cutting ceremony before the store opened its doors for the first time. "Burlington is a growing company that attracts lots of customers, and they are also known for their charitable giving. We are very pleased to welcome them to Lakewood," said Mayor Steve Croft.
In celebration of the Lakewood grand opening, Burlington demonstrated its commitment to the community by donating $10,000 to a nearby school through its partnership with AdoptAClassroom.org. Throughout the year, the Lakewood store will join in Burlington's nationwide support of charities including the Warm Coats and Warm Hearts Coat Drive, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, AdoptAClassroom.org and WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease. Burlington's regular store hours
will be: • Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. • Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. • Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Burlington is a publicly traded company founded as a family business in 1972 by Monroe Milstein. It is a national off-price department store chain, offering clothing and shoes for the whole family, accessories, baby gear, home décor items and gifts. The Lakewood store is the 71st Burlington store in California. ♦
Thank a servicemember...you can help
Children can help by creating drawings or writing messages of appreciation.
Since the launch of the City of Lakewood's "Thank a Servicemember" campaign in 2014, more than 23,000 postcards and letters
of appreciation have been collected from the greater Lakewood community and forwarded to U.S. servicemen and women deployed overseas. Holiday greetings and letters of thanks will be collected again this year through early December. At City Hall, Lakewood libraries and community centers, you can fill out a free Lakewood commemorative postcard or drop off your own letter or card (please, no envelopes or glitter and no cards larger than 8.5" x 11"). The City will send all submissions to servicemembers overseas through the military support group Operation Gratitude. “The dedicated men and women who serve far from home are our family, friends and neighbors, and we are so grateful for their in-
credible patriotism and bravery,” said Mayor Steve Croft. “Help us show them how much we honor their sacrifice and the risks they endure by taking the time to write a note of appreciation.” If your business, service club or organization would like to partner with us in the project, go to www.lakewoodcity.org/TASGetInvolved. Our partners and dropoff locations are listed at www. lakewoodcity.org/TASPartners. ♦
The Lakewood Beautiful Home Awards program recently marked its 35th year with city council members and over 200 people gathering at The Centre to recognize the 2018 honorees for their accomplishments in landscaping, home maintenance and waterwise irrigation. The 66 recognized homes were chosen from 176 nominated residences. A photo gallery and LakewoodCityTV video featuring interviews with homeowners can be seen at www.lakewoodcity.org/ LakewoodBeautifulWinners. In the new category of the Jackie Rynerson “Transformation Award,” 11 homeowners were honored for making significant improvements to their home’s exterior or landscaping in the past three years. The award is named after the founder of Lakewood Beautiful who was also one of the organizers of the city’s incorporation movement in 1954 and a former city council member. Water Wise Awards were given to 18 homeowners for using efficient irrigation and droughttolerant landscaping while main-
taining a beautiful yard and home. “When caring, committed residents invest in and care for their homes and properties, property values for everyone get a boost and our community is a stronger, safer place,” said Lakewood Mayor Steve Croft, who presided over the award ceremony. Recognition was also be expressed to the many Lakewood Beautiful-nominated homes (and others not nominated) that display a pride of ownership and care and help make Lakewood’s neighborhoods so appealing. Also new this year, residents can view an online map at www. lakewoodcity.org/LakewoodBeautifulMap to go look at the exterior of several of the winning homes. “We ask that if you take a driving tour,” said Mayor Croft, “that you please be respectful of your neighbors and enjoy the view from the sidewalk. But if an honoree happens to be outside, then be sure to let them know you’re there to enjoy their hard work and their contributions at keeping Lakewood beautiful.” ♦
Lakewood resident turns 100… and still writes to servicemembers
Alleen Cooper is one of Lakewood’s original residents from the 1950s. She recently celebrated her 100th birthday with friends and family gathered at her Lakewood home. Lakewood Mayor Steve Croft and Vice Mayor Todd Rogers were on hand and presented Alleen with a city proclamation of special recognition. “One of the many amazing things about Alleen,” said Croft, “is that she has been writing letters of thanks to servicemembers of the U.S. Armed Forces since World War II, and she has never stopped. She’s written nearly 8,000 letters so far, and she is still writing today. “If she can write that many,” said Croft, “each of us can write at least one, right?” Lakewood residents have that opportunity through the city’s Thank A Servicemember program where the city prints up Lakewoodthemed postcards to which residents can add a note of appreciation. The city then sends the cards to servicemembers overseas during the upcoming holiday season through Operation Gratitude.

You can pick up a Thank A Servicemember card at Lakewood City Hall or at a participating Lakewood organization you can find at www. lakewoodcity.org/ThankAServicemember, or call 562-866-9771, extension 2125. Happy Birthday to Alleen Cooper from the City of Lakewood! ♦
