Greater Lakewood Chamber of Commerce

The Greater Lakewood Chamber of Commerce's 75th Anniversary Gala brought together over 160 people to celebrate the economic footprint it has had on the City of Lakewood over the last 75 years as a nonprofit organization.

Hosted by Lakewood's very own Starlight Cinemas, the Gala was held on the very day it was incorporated 75 years ago on April 11, 1949.

Catered by TGIS, the 75th Anniversary Gala, with the help of Make It Pop Party Decor, turned back the hands of time and returned the Grand Lobby at Starlight Cinemas back into its days of vintage Hollywood glamour, a scene more familiar to the 60-year-old theater than we could possibly imagine.

Along with a red carpet, and vintage cars to welcome guests, attendees enjoyed an evening of music, food, a live

auction, grand raffle prizes and toasting to the next 75 years.

The 75th Anniversary Gala was made possible thanks to all of our sponsors, including: Starlight Cinemas, the City of Lakewood, World Energy/Air Products, Lakewood Center, Farmers & Merchants Bank, EDCO, the Lakewood Family YMCA, TGIS, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, Affordable Burial & Cremation Services, Inc., West Coast Arborists, LBS Financial Credit Union, and Whittingham Public Affairs Advisors, Sugar from the Heart Bakery, Assemblyman Anthony Rendon, Roxanne's Bar, Timmons Subaru, Lakewood Jaycees, UC Design Studio, Coast Party Rentals, JB Construction, MagicLens Photo Booths, Mike Hedges and Joy Janes.

The Lakewood City Council, at their April 9 meeting, adopted a resolution accepting the results of the March 5 municipal election, and the City Clerk swore in the two winning council candidates: newly elected Council Member David Arellano and re-elected Council Member Jeff Wood.

Arellano grew up in Lakewood and attended schools in the area, graduating from Lakewood High School.

toration. He has been active in the community in a variety of ways, volunteering as a youth sports coach, and serving on the Bellflower Unified School District Citizens Task Force, Los Cerritos YMCA Board of Directors, and Lakewood Measure L Citizens Oversight Committee. He has also volunteered with the Greater Lakewood Chamber of Commerce, including serving as Board Chair recently.

With the sudden news that two local retailers were closing their doors, the Southeast Los Angeles Workforce Development Board (SELACO WDB) conducted Rapid Response efforts in response to recent closures of local 99cent stores and Rite Aid locations.

“After spending my earliest years in the foster care system, being adopted and then moving to Lakewood was life-changing,” says David. “The sense of community, living in a safe neighborhood, friendships and participating in local sports programs all helped to shape my character and aspirations.”

Professionally, David founded and

Lakewood’s trash contractor, EDCO, always closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, will now also be closed on Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day.

This means that trash pickup on those holiday weeks will be delayed one day.

For Memorial Day and Labor Day, Monday trash service will move to Tuesday, Tuesday service to Wednesday, and so on, with Friday service moving to Saturday. For the Fourth of July, which falls on Thurs-

day this year, trash collection will be delayed one day for Thursday and Friday customers only.

For many residents, this means that trash pickup during these three holiday weeks each year will take place on the same day as their street sweeping.

Tips for trash pickup on street sweeping day

Carts may not be placed on the parkway or driveway apron, as it makes the cart difficult to pick up or set down without tipping it over.

Place your carts as usual, but if you can, please try to move them out of the street after EDCO passes by to allow for the best possible street sweep.

Street sweepers will provide extra attention the following week if needed on particular blocks.

Why the change?

Lakewood was the only city EDCO serviced that had trash pickup on these three holidays in the past. The new change was not initiated by EDCO or Lakewood. But the SERRF facility (a trash-to-energy plant)

in Long Beach is being permanently closed, so EDCO now has no place to dispose of all of the trash, recycled materials and organic materials it collects on holidays because all of the available landfills are also closed on holidays.

Service reminders for Memorial Day

Lakewood City Hall will be closed on Monday, May 27 in observance of Memorial Day, and:

Trash service will be delayed one day all week (no pickup on May 27).

There will be no street sweeping on this day and no makeup sweep.

There will be no DASH service on May 27.

TITLE

There will be NO street sweeping-related parking enforcement on Monday, May 27.

Parking enforcement will continue for violations not related to street sweeping, such as parking in red zones or blocking sidewalks.

How to report a non-emergency issue when City Hall is closed

Call and leave a message for the customer service staff at 562-866-9771, ext. 2140 or send an email to service1@ lakewoodcity.org. They will answer messages on the next business day.

ADVERTORIAL

Why the Living Trust is so

IMPORTANT

Living Trusts are an efficient and effective way to transfer property, at your death, to the relatives, friends or charities you’ve chosen. Essentially, a Living Trust performs the same function as a Will, with the important difference that property left by a Will must go through the probate court process.

In probate, a public court proceeding, the deceased’s debts are paid. Then after a year or more at tremendous expense to your heirs, the remaining property is finally distributed to them.

By contrast, property left by a Living Trust can go promptly, privately and directly to your heirs. Living Trusts are created while you’re alive and are “revocable.” You can revoke or change them at any time, for any reason. You can abolish the Trust, alter its terms or change the beneficiaries.

As the original trustee, you can do whatever you wish with your assets - manage them, sell them, or give them away. Upon your death, the successor trustee takes over the estate immediately without going through probate, then distributes the assets and terminates the Trust.

DONATIONS TO CAMP PENDLETON FOR MILITARY FAMILIES AND CHILDREN

There are over 70,000 Marines at Camp Pendleton and 10,000 children under the age of 5. More than 160 babies are born at the base each month. Most families arrive at base with only what they managed to fit into their car and are challenged to furnish a small apartment. With very low incomes, most families do not have essential needs for their newborns and small children.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF LAKEWOOD WANTS TO HELP and has organized a collection of new and gently used items to support our military families.

ITEMS OF GREATEST NEED ARE:

Free Lawn signs against illegal fireworks use, available

The City of Lakewood is continually looking for new ways to discourage the relatively few residents among us who use skyrockets, explosives and other illegal fireworks that are very dangerous in a crowded residential community like Lakewood.

Illegal fireworks have caused fires in residential homes in Lakewood and other communities, often from embers falling from skyrockets shot off several blocks away that slowly burn on home roofs unnoticed by anyone for hours.

New last year, the city designed and purchased signs (shown above) in patriotic col-

ors that residents can get, for free, to place on their lawn with a message against the use of illegal fireworks.

Call City Hall at 562-866-9771 ext. 2140 or email Service1@lakewoodcity.org to get a sign. You can then come by City Hall to pick up your free sign and metal stand to go in your lawn.

Lakewood is known throughout our region as a city that takes the strongest possible measures to combat the

use of illegal fireworks, including:

•Issuing citations for illegal fireworks use, with a fine package that was increased in recent years to rise above

$2,000.

•Hiring extra law enforcement personnel to patrol city streets on and before July 4.

•Undercover operations to target the sale of illegal fireworks.

•Prohibiting block parties for three years if illegal fireworks have been used on that block.

“The problem of illegal fireworks use has grown in recent years throughout California and the nation, and it doesn’t matter whether a community

allows or disallows the use of safe-and-sane fireworks,” said McCormack. “The problem of illegal fireworks is the same in both types of communities.

“Lakewood residents can have a lot of fun with safe-andsane fireworks,” said Lakewood City Manager Thaddeus McCormack, “and you won’t risk harming veterans, pets and neighbors in the process. Safe-and-sane fireworks are approved by the state fire marshal and do not go in the air, explode or have sound that travels far. Please do your part to help, so our community can have a safe and peaceful July 4th holiday.”
