The Lakewood Run is just around the corner!

Avoid traffic delays for Lakewood Run

Residents may encounter traffic delays when traveling certain streets on Saturday, March 2, from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The annual Lakewood Run begins on Clark Avenue in front of the Sheriff’s Station and proceeds toward South Street. The race will also use: • South Street (from Clark Avenue to Palo Verde Avenue) • Palo Verde Avenue (from South Street to Harvey Way, crossing Del Amo Boulevard) • Harvey Way (from Palo Verde Avenue to Woodruff Avenue) • Woodruff Avenue (from Harvey Way to Del Amo Boulevard) • Del Amo Boulevard (from Woodruff Avenue to Clark Avenue) Briercrest Avenue will be used for the 5K run between South Street and Del Amo Boulevard. Hundreds of runners, walkers and wheelchair participants will be in attendance, and Sheriff’s deputies and volunteers will be assigned to traffic control and safety that morning. New happenings at Burns Community Center Avid runners, fitness athletes, families and kids are all welcome.

The Lakewood Run returns the morning of Saturday, March 2, 2019 when deputy sheriffs, recreational runners, families and kids gather at the starting line in front of the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station to run the event’s 5K/10K course for time, or do the 1K “Fun Run” or a 5K walk. Lakewood’s tree-lined residential streets provide the backdrop. The flat, “runner friendly” course is “fast” for practiced run-

ners and comfortable for fitness fans and family members. Participants directly support Soroptimist International of Lakewood/Long Beach and Lakewood

Sheriff’s Station charity efforts in this family-friendly event, including the Su Casa Domestic Abuse Network, Pathways Volunteer Hospice, and uncovered expenses for the families of wounded or deceased deputies. Registration is $40 from Feb. 1 through March 1, and $45 the day of the race. The 1K Fun Run preregistration rate is $20 and $25 on race day. On the day of the event, registration begins at 6:30 a.m. The 5K and 10K runs start at 8 a.m. The Fun Run begins at 9:30 a.m. Professional timing will be used. Medals will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in each category of the 5K and 10K running events. All finishers for the 5K/10K will receive finisher medals. For participants and spectators, the day includes a fitness expo and displays of public safety equipment and programs. There is also live entertainment and special giveaways from Lakewood-area businesses. You can view the route and find parking information at www.lakewoodrun.com. The newly renovated and landscaped Burns Community Center offers expanded activities for residents.

With the voluntary vacancy of “Nifty After Fifty” from the upstairs area of the building, Lakewood’s Active+ programming, classes and activities for the “active senior” have expanded to incorporate some new offerings in this large space. New classes will be offered in the carpeted upstairs area, such as Step Aerobics, Chair Volleyball, Active+ Line Dancing, Gentle Yoga, Yoga with Weights, and Brain Games. The downstairs area has seen an attractive remodeling. Old favorite classes are returning to the downstairs activity room, includ-

ing Stretch and Tone, Stretch and Meditate, Tech Talk, Burns Book Club and Poker Club, to name a few. Did you know that the Activity Room at Burns Community Center is now available to reserve for your own event? Come visit and see what new and exciting opportunities are waiting for you!
