Volunteer Denny Reed enjoys the bench dedicated to him at Lakewood Station.

Lakewood resident Denny Reed retired from his first career in 1995 after 32 years working at an Arco refinery. Then he decided to give back to his community by volunteering at the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station. He liked helping Deputy Sheriffs keep Lakewood safe so much that he turned the volunteer assignments into a second career of sorts, racking up the hours over time to equal a 20year full-time job…a record for any volunteer in the history of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department! Lakewood City Council Members recently joined dozens of Sheriff’s personnel (and members of Denny’s family) in surprising the longtime Lakewood resident with a special ceremony at the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station. Among the tokens of appreciation was a bench engraved in Denny’s name that will sit in the sta-

tion’s outside assembly area. See a video about Denny produced by Lakewood CityTV at www.lakewoodcity.org/Reed. “We are so proud of Denny,” said Mayor Todd Rogers. “And he’s just a great example of the kind of people we have in Lakewood, who love their community, take care of it and their neighbors, and give back.” You may see Denny and other station volunteers in Lakewood in their white shirts, directing traffic after an accident, doing vacation checks for residents, helping at community events like Concerts in the Park, or doing behind the scenes work inside the Sheriff’s Station. That volunteer work frees up Deputy Sheriffs to spend more time doing what they alone can do: patrolling the city, investigating crimes and keeping Lakewood one of the safest communities in the region. ♦
