Meet the residents serving on city commissions

Community Safety Commissioners (clockwise from upper left) Linda Quarto, Ben Maleki, Lourdes Baez, Erin Stibal, Sarah Mendoza.

Like most California cities, Lakewood has several commissions composed of residents who advise the City Council and perform some of the initial reviews of resident requests on particular matters. In Lakewood, each commission has five members, with the five City Council Members each appointing one commissioner. The Community Safety Commission studies traffic control and related issues and reviews resident requests for disabled parking spots in front of their homes. The Community Safety Commissioners are: • Linda Quarto, who has lived in Lakewood for 31 years, and with her husband

Bob owns Foggia Italian Market & Deli. Linda is the current Chair of the Commission. • Ben Maleki, who has lived in Lakewood for 25 years. He’s an Aircraft Load Planner for FedEx Express. Ben is the current Vice Chair of the Commission. • Lourdes Baez, who has lived in Lakewood for 24 years. She’s employed as the Registrar at St. Anthony High School in Long Beach. • Erin Stibal, who has lived in Lakewood most of her life. She, her son and her mom all graduated from Mayfair High School. She is the Administrative Services Manager for the L.A. Coun-

ty Sheriff’s Department’s Facilities Services Bureau. • Sarah Mendoza, who has lived in Lakewood for all of her 24 years. She recently completed college and graduate school, and was working at Fox Sports in the Spanish Department prior to being furloughed when COVID hit. She volunteers with several Lakewood community groups, including the Pan Am Association and Rotary Club. Coming up in future editions will be spotlights on the members of Lakewood’s Planning and Environment Commission and Recreation and Community Services Commission. ♦

Save money on your annual property tax The Office of L.A. County Assessor Jeffrey Prang is reminding residents to file for the “Homeowners’ Exemption” to save $70 a year on their property taxes. An owner only needs to apply one time, and the exemption is then deducted from your property taxes every year automatically. To receive the $70 exemption, you must own the home and it must be your principal residence on Jan. 1. Apply using Form BOE-266 (Claim for Homeowners’ Property Tax Exemption) from

the County Assessor’s website at https://tinyurl. com/savehometax. New property owners will automatically receive a Claim for Homeowners’ Property Tax Exemption. Homeowners’ Exemptions may also apply to a supplemental assessment if the prior owner did not claim the exemption. Further instructions are included with the claim form. Call 213-974-3211 or 888-807-2111 for forms and additional information. ♦
