Founded in the late 1800s, Hewitt has grown from a small farming community to a city full of loyal residents and growing businesses. This city has proven to be a place where people can cultivate families, build businesses, create jobs, retire (and even vacation). Whatever season of life someone is in, Hewitt has something for everyone.
The Greater Hewitt Chamber of Commerce has much to do with the city’s success, as well as the success of surrounding areas. GHCoC’s amazing staff, members and faithful volunteers do a superb job of providing residents and businesses of Hewitt with all the information needed to make this wonderful city their home. We offer signature events throughout the year that focus on bringing our community together for fun, faith and communitybuilding. We strive to provide valuable resources to business owners to help facilitate their success. We make sure the greater Hewitt area—and surrounding cities—are well-informed of networking opportunities and business-building education meetings. The Chamber also provides various advertising opportunities for local businesses.
GHCoC staff, directors and volunteers are privileged to give back to the community by serving several local organizations, including Christian Women’s Job Corps, Shepherd’s Heart Food Pantry, Hunger Free Midway ISD, Midway ISD Education Foundation, Hewitt Lion’s Club, Kiwanis Club and Caritas of Waco, just to name a few.
Looking in the rearview mirror, 2024 was a very tumultuous year, as we have seen such an impact to the City of Hewitt and surrounding cities. Hewitt has become a hub for thriving international companies wanting to establish their headquarters alongside our local businesses to make our unique community their home. Hewitt residents and businesses continue to grow this wonderful community through love and faith with a servant’s heart. As we embrace a new year, those of us in the Chamber will continue to offer an abundance of benefits to our members, as well as opportunities to rally together, help business owners grow and maintain success, and support each other—all while continuing to have a fun and inclusive environment.
The founders of Hewitt strived to build the amazing community we now enjoy today. As we start 2025, the Greater Hewitt Chamber will continue to do its part to be a community that is expanding in prosperity and growth.

Hewitt’s Location
Rich History, Central Location and Convenient Transportation Channels
Hewitt is ideally located just south of Waco—integral to the founding of the city and establishment of a rail depot when, in 1882, the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad (MKT) began building a line between Waco and Taylor. This line eventually required a switch six miles from Waco. The site chosen was owned by the estate of John H. Brower, a shipping magnate who had once been the Consul of the Republic of Texas in New York. His estate was entrusted to his son-in-law, Thomas B. Hewitt, a Yale-educated corporate attorney and Katy employee. The MKT named the switch station “Hewitt” in his honor, and a town was born.
Today, Hewitt is located along I-35 an important international conduit for people and trade. With Austin, Dallas and Fort Worth all within a 100-mile radius, Hewitt residents can easily make day trips to these Texas hubs of industry, culture and business. I-35 also provides international access as it travels south through San Antonio and Laredo into Mexico, and north to Dallas and Fort Worth all the way through Canada. Additional significant regional and state thoroughfares include U.S. Highways 77 and 84, and State Highway 6.
Hewitt is actively served by more than 30 common motor freight carriers. Single carrier service is available to 32 metro areas in the southwest, with an overnight radius of 400 miles.
The Union Railroad runs through the center of Hewitt. Industrial land use is located along the railroad tracks in the northern portion of the city, and the Greater Hewitt-Waco area is also serviced by Burlington Northern Santa Fe.
Hewitt is served by three primary airports: Waco Regional Airport, Texas State Technical College Airport and the McGregor Executive Airport. Waco Regional Airport (ACT) provides a 6,600-foot runway serviced by American Eagle. Texas State Technical College’s Airport (CNW) is known locally as the industrial airport, as it is home to numerous aviationrelated firms in addition to the top-rated technical college. CNW provides an 8,600-foot runway, FOB and capability to accommodate air cargo traffic. McGregor Executive Airport provides accommodations for privately-owned aircraft, and features a 5,500-foot runway and hangars available for lease. Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and AustinBergstrom International Airport are each located within 90 miles of Hewitt.
Hewitt shares its northern borders with Waco. Surrounding communities include Woodway, McGregor, Lorena and Robinson. Hewitt’s location is part of the town’s beginnings as a railroad depot, and part of its future as a business base that continues growing into the 21st century.

City Government
Striving to continually improve the quality of public service, preparing for future needs, and planning for economic growth are top priorities for Hewitt. The City is led by the Mayor and City Council—seven members that function under a council-manager form of government—the most common form of municipal operations in Texas. Members serve two-year staggered terms and are elected at large determined by ward. Effective governance is ensured by the Council’s direction, goals, performance and fair exchange of information. Citizens of Hewitt have the ability to view Council meetings live on the City’s website (Hewitt TX TV) online at cityofhewitt. com. Meetings are held on the first and third Mondays at 7:00 p.m.
The mission of the City of Hewitt is to enact the will of the people, providing services for residents and business in a courteous, efficient, honest and competent manner, and ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens.
Hewitt’s boards, commissions and committees are formed by volunteer residents and appointed by the Council. The list includes the Library Board, Planning & Zoning Commission, Civil Service Commission, Board of Adjustment, and the Parks & Beautification Committee.
The City owns and operates Hewitt’s water supply and distribution system, while maintaining drainage areas, water and sewer lines, streets and other critical infrastructure. Hewitt participates with other cities in the region in a joint wastewater treatment effort to help reduce the environmental impact of multiple wastewater treatment facilities, and to protect and preserve our natural resources.
Hewitt’s Police and Fire departments are dedicated to providing full-time protection to the Hewitt community, and Hewitt’s Library excels in servicing 200,000+ visitors annually.

Hewitt Police Department
DuringHewitt’s early years, citizens relied on the county Sheriff’s department for protection. Considered a “rural area” with no organized city charter/government, Hewitt’s law enforcement operated under Texas state law through county departments. As Hewitt grew, residents banded together to form an official city, and the State of Texas granted Hewitt its official charter— allowing it newfound rights to hire a city police staff.
In 1975, the Hewitt Police Department emerged in the form of one man, Police Chief Otis Mirick, who served as the official Police Department, animal control operator, building inspector and sole employee of the Public Works Department. Chief Mirick wore many hats until the city’s need for more protection became evident. Hewitt then hired more officers and public works specialists.
Following Otis Mirick in the Chief of Police role were Dennis Luedke, Jack Caswell, Frank Latham, James Barton, James Devlin, and our current Chief, John McGrath. Each year, Hewitt Police present the C.R.A.Z.E. (Civilian Response to Active Shooters) Program, S.H.A.R.P. (Sexual Harrassment and Rape Prevention Program, as well as a course called "How to Recognize a Scam" to area residents. A K-9 unit was also established to assist officers. In addition, Hewitt now has an Animal Control Officer and a Code Enforcement Officer.
HPD is located at 100 Patriot Court in the Hewitt Public Safety facility. Public Safety staffing includes 31 sworn officers, nine dispatch communication specialists, records and property room staff, along with an Animal Control Officer and a Code Enforcement Officer.
Hewitt Police hosts a multitude of Junior Safety programs focusing on public education for children, bike helmet awareness, and child car seat programs. Hewitt PD also hosts its Citizen’s Police Academy, held annually with evening classes that meet from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Attendees will learn about Patrol Operations, Criminal Investigation, SWAT, K-9, Communications,
The Hewitt Police Department is a community service-driven police department—providing law enforcement and peacekeeping through leadership, integrity, teamwork, professionalism and accountability.
Traffic Enforcement, Force Options training and much more. To be eligible for the Academy, registrants must be 18 years of age or older, a resident of Hewitt or an employee of a business located in Hewitt, and have no criminal record. There is no cost to attend the program.
Hewitt was ranked as the 9th Safest City in Texas by SafeWise in 2019, due in large part to the protection provided by HPD. Hewitt was also ranked 19th in the U.S. and 3rd in Texas for its annual National Night Out events hosted by the Hewitt Police Department.
Hewitt families and property are “protected and served” by its extraordinary Hewitt Police Department.

Hewitt Fire Department
Hewitt began as a community where “The Desire to Serve” meant that people helped one another. In 1956, a house fire at the corner of Johnson and 2nd Street left a home in ashes, primarily because firefighters were unable to reach the house in time to stop the blaze. The homeowner hoped that his misfortune would never be repeated. He donated his lot to the city, where a structure was built to serve as the main station for the new Hewitt Volunteer Fire Department.
The Hewitt VFD purchased its first “fire trucks” from the National Forestry Surplus. The trucks did not provide enough resources to properly serve the growing community. Additional fundraisers provided the Hewitt VFD with resources for a building on the donated lot, but the organization still lacked a great deal of necessary equipment. As Hewitt grew, so grew the demand for larger trucks and more firefighters.
Today, the Hewitt Fire Department consists of 22 career firefighters. The Department operates 24/7/365 out of the Public Safety building near
the corner of Hewitt Drive and Ritchie Road, and responds to 1,800+ calls each year. These calls include structure fires, vehicle fires, grass/brush fires, auto collisions, vehicle extrication, hazardous materials incidents, rescues and first response to medical emergencies.
Fire Department responsibilities include apparatus and building maintenance, building inspections, emergency medical services, equipment maintenance, fire hydrant maintenance, fire prevention, fire suppression, hose testing, mutual aid response and rescue operations.
The Department also attends many community events each year, including visiting schools to teach fire prevention and safety, Hewitt Public Library’s Dog Days event and Hewitt Police Department’s annual National Night Out event. The Department also conducts fire extinguisher training, and will provide visitors with fire station tours. Residents are served well by these highly-trained firefighters who continually work to make Hewitt a safe place to live, work and play.
Plans are currently underway for a second fire station to be built in the 300 block of Old Temple Road in Hewitt.
Our mission is to provide the highest-quality protection to preserve lives and property of the citizens of Hewitt. Through training, education, fire prevention, innovative services, and respect for our citizens, we will accomplish this mission.
We strive to serve as positive role models through community involvement and activities.

So THAT’S what I’ve been hearing when a storm approaches!
Did you know that we now have lightning alerts in our Hewitt parks? These sirens are part of the outdoor warning system, but much smaller. They are linked with the National Weather Service and will alert when there is a lightning strike within 10 miles of your location. The sirens will only alert between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. When it alerts,
the speaker will sound a couple of tones and then say, “Lightning has been detected in your area. Take shelter.” Sirens will also alert for other outdoor emergencies, along with Hewitt’s larger sirens as well. If you are outside and hear these alerts, take shelter. Lightning can be very dangerous.
One of the new small lightning detector sirens located in Warren Park.
