The Desire to Serve, the Courage to Act, the Ability to Perform

Meet your Hewitt City Council members

Steve Fortenberry was born in Lubbock and then moved to the McLennan County district—finally settling in Hewitt in 2003. Before Hewitt, he returned to Lubbock to attend Texas Tech University. Fortenberry currently owns and operates Fortenberry Insurance Agency, LLC. He previously worked for an oil and gas service company (petroleum information) and in the family business, where he provided coverage and service for the commercial truck industry. While living in Hewitt, Fortenberry has served on the Hewitt Police Officers’ Civil Service Commission.

Dr. Bruce is a toxicologist who does translational medical research, and teaches the next generation of scientists and doctors at Baylor University. Her background is in civil engineering and toxicology, and her current research focuses on developing drugs for hypoxia-related conditions. She is currently working on developing drugs for the Department of Defense to use in Combat Casualty Care to treat traumatic brain injuries, chronic wounds, cancer, and far-forward combat theatre resuscitation.

He joined the Hewitt City Council in May 2016,  and believes that his experience in the business world helps him understand the importance of fiscal responsibilities, and is an asset for him supporting the City Council in accomplishing their goals of ongoing improvements for Hewitt. Fortenberry joined the City Council because he believes that Hewitt has become more inviting for new commercial and residential growth, and he wants to be a part of Hewitt’s continued success.

Dr. Bruce is active in the community, volunteering for various organizations, and is passionate about giving back through education, outreach, and service—especially for veterans and those in crisis. She is an immediate response advocate for survivors of violence at local hospitals for the Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children in Waco. She also volunteers for various student organizations, supporting leadership, mentoring, and professional growth for aspiring doctors and scientists.

Dr. Bruce believes the qualities an effective leader possesses are rooted in competent critical thinking, logical problem solving, and connected leadership that is built on a foundation of integrity. “I believe these character qualities, seen through example, moral principles that can be observed through a caring spirit, and commitment that is evident through actions are what we need to be successful in serving Hewitt.” She believes that leadership based on mutual respect, honesty, passion, listening, and respectfully considering the opinions of others, honoring the experience of our city staff, and then making decisions after careful consideration is an effective way to help guide a diverse, growing community like Hewitt.

She and her family have lived in Hewitt for 10 years. She has two children and enjoys participating in cheering them on in their academic and extracurricular activities.

n an era when communities across McLennan County are evolving with renewed energy, a significant development is taking root in Hewitt. TFNB Your Bank for Life, a longstanding pillar in the region with roots dating back to 1889 has expanded its footprint to six locations. The opening of its new Hewitt facility underscores a steadfast commitment to investing in local neighborhoods and supporting the families and businesses that drive our community forward.

Why Hewitt?

The decision to establish a location in Hewitt was driven by the region’s dynamic growth and its blend of smalltown charm with a forward-thinking spirit. As more families settle in and businesses—from professional services to retail and local hospitality—continue to flourish, TFNB recognized that the Hewitt-Woodway corridor was poised for further development. The new facility is designed to offer tailored banking services that meet the unique needs of local residents while strengthening community ties.

Supporting Local Dreams

The new Hewitt location is designed to be more than a place for routine transactions. It serves as a hub where local families can secure loans for home ownership, entrepreneurs can find support for new ventures, and

longstanding businesses can access the financial tools needed to thrive. “In every conversation with our neighbors, it’s clear that banking here is about building a future,” says Link Harris, a Senior VP at the Hewitt location. “We’re here to support every dream—whether it’s starting a business, or finding the perfect home for a growing family.”

Its new Hewitt location reflects not only a strategic expansion, but also an ongoing promise to invest in the community and the people who call it home.

For business owners and families alike, the opening of this new facility represents a fresh opportunity to access trusted banking services tailored to local needs.

As TFNB continues to build on its 135-year legacy, the bank reaffirms its mission to be a steadfast partner in the financial journey of every local resident.

HPL honored with Achievement of Excellence

Hewitt Public Library has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to excellence, earning the 2024 Achievement of Excellence in Libraries award from the Texas Municipal Library Directors Association (TMLDA), an affiliate of the Texas Municipal League. This award recognizes the library’s dedication to providing outstanding services, innovative programs, and exceptional community engagement.

Each year, TMLDA evaluates public libraries across Texas based on their ability to meet high standards of service, accessibility, and innovation. Only a select group of libraries—approximately 10% of Texas public libraries—achieve this honor. To receive the award, a library must exhibit excellence in ten key areas, including:

• Services to Underserved Populations

• Innovative/effective marketing

• Collaborative efforts with community organizations

• Enhanced service to the public

• Literacy support for all ages

• Support for digital inclusion

A standout program contributing to this recognition is the library’s annual summer reading program, encouraging children and adults alike to develop stronger reading habits. Through this program, the Hewitt Public Library serves as a dynamic gathering space for community interaction. The library partners with local schools, businesses, and civic organizations to offer a diverse array of programs that foster creativity, cultural awareness, and lifelong learning. The library’s team works tirelessly to make reading and learning fun and enjoyable with other reading programs like 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten and the Winter Reading Challenge prompting participation beginning at birth.

Beyond its collection of books and digital media, HPL has embraced digital transformation by offering a robust collection of e-books, e-audiobooks, and online research tools, ensuring accessibility for all members of the community.

• Support for workforce development

• Cultural, topical, and education programming for adults and families

• Professional staff training

• Other library initiatives

HPL has consistently demonstrated a forwardthinking approach to library services to ensure that it remains a vital resource. Over the past year, HPL has introduced new technology initiatives such as its Full STEAM Ahead project; expanded digital resources with reading apps like Boundless and Comics Plus; and enhanced programming for children, teens, and adults. With a focus on literacy, education, and lifelong learning, the library has hosted reading challenges, STEM workshops, and learning events that have enriched the lives of countless community members.

Library Director Matthew Glaser expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating, “Receiving the Achievement of Excellence in Libraries award is a tremendous honor and constant goal for our team. It reflects our dedication to serving the Hewitt community and continually striving to enhance our programs and services. We are proud to provide a space where learning, discovery, and connection thrive.”

This 6th TMLDA award serves as a testament to the hard work of the library’s staff, the support of the City of Hewitt and its community partners, and the invaluable engagement of its visitors. The Hewitt Public Library’s recognition by TMLDA underscores its role as a leader in library excellence, ensuring that it remains a cherished institution for generations to come.
