YMCA of Austin 2021 Impact Report

DEAR YMCA FRIENDS
Twenty twenty-one will go down as a turning point in the history of our YMCA.
Still recovering from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, we faced a leadership transition with the retirement of longtime President & CEO James Finck in January. Two weeks later, we endured the worst winter storm in Texas history, which brought our community to its knees.
But in true YMCA fashion, we rallied to serve in every way we could, opening our doors to provide clean drinking water and hot showers to hundreds of neighbors in need.
The path ahead didn’t get any easier, with constantly shifting health regulations, unpredictable COVID surges and a historically tight labor market. But with each new challenge, we doubled down on our commitment to serving the community. We reconfigured spaces to keep people safe and offered outdoor and virtual classes. We listened to what kids, families and seniors needed and adapted to find new ways to meet those needs.
Today, vaccines and safety protocols have given us a measure of security and normalcy. YMCA membership and program registrations are approaching pre-pandemic levels. Friends are dancing together in Zumba again. Kids are discovering new talents in summer day camp. Seniors are visiting over a cup of coffee after a water exercise class. And our work is fueled by once-in-a-generation opportunities that now lie immediately ahead of us.
If there’s one thing the last two years have taught us, it’s to think like a startup. Be innovative and nimble enough to find new solutions to old problems. Be bold enough to act, but careful enough to act wisely. That’s why we’ve begun laying the groundwork for a new brand and vision that will inform our next strategic plan.

You are the foundation that we build upon: our community. We seek your guidance, listen to your voices, and we respond. As a volunteer-led nonprofit community enterprise, we ARE you.
Sure, some startups can be risky. But when we invest in people and communities, the return is always exponential. As we approach our 70th year in 2023, it’s a safe bet that this “startup” is here for good.

SHOWING UP
Spearheaded by the Hays Communities and TownLake YMCAs, we served more than 700 area residents with shelter, warmth, hot showers and clean drinking water during the February winter storm.

STAYING NIMBLE & RESPONSIVE

Navigating ever-changing COVID-19 safety measures in partner school districts coupled with a historic labor shortage, the Extend-A-Care YMCA successfully served more than 5,000 families with afterschool education & care and enriching summer camp programming.

GATHERING FOR GOOD
As vaccines rolled out across the nation, we held our first in-person event in over a year. Our Here for Good Celebration at Camp Moody welcomed volunteers, donors and community partners to recognize outstanding service and look to the future.

PROVIDING RELIEF AND REFUGE
As Austin helped resettle thousands of Afghan refugees, we celebrated Welcoming Week with a donation drive in partnership with Refugee Services of Central Texas.

CELEBRATING WHO WE ARE
We marked Hispanic Heritage Month by highlighting our YMCA Changemakers who bring their authentic selves to work each day to benefit our community.

LABORING FOR LOVE
Volunteers from Love, Tito’s lent their efforts at the North Austin Y to help prepare the North Austin Community Garden for the fall planting season. The effort stemmed from Tito’s “Block to Block” grant program to support community gardens.

ENVISIONING THE FUTURE
We hosted Professor John Fernandez from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Andres Carvallo from Texas State University’s CIEDAR Research Consortium to help envision how YMCA Camp Moody can become a living lab for innovation and sustainability across our Association and the global Y movement.
Every day at the Y, we work to make our communities stronger. That work simply wouldn’t be possible without a strong financial foundation. Our purpose and our financial commitments go hand in hand. That’s why we closely track all our efforts, carefully measuring the impact and keeping a keen eye on the bottom line. Although the pandemic has delivered the greatest challenge in our organization’s history, the following information demonstrates the beginnings of our return to financial stability and growth in 2021.
