Publisher’s Letter cannot even come close to realizing it’s been 7 years with the launch of Hot Pan Productions, Inc. As I sit here at one of the various rallies we completely love to emcee and promote, I reflect on the basement launch of Garage71 radio with two great guys, Rev. Andy and Brian Stretch, and where it is today with being listed in the top 400 radio stations on the web and rated #1 Garage Rock station. I look at all the hurdles we have worked through and all the success we, as a crew, have shared. When we took over the once local magazine, Biker 101, and made the transition to Grease Inc., it all made sense. We live this lifestyle everyday. We don’t pretend. We believe in the Americana persona and the Kustom Kulture with all of its unadulterated music, art, creativity, style, and attitude! If it all had to be replayed I would not change a thing. Since our inception, the road has proven there will only be detours and potholes. Hell, we even got a little road rash one winter. With that said, it’s the journey that has made this road trip the best! I have to thank all the people behind the scenes that make this possible everyday. Thank you: Rev. Andy, Brian P. O
n September 26, 2015, I boarded a plane bound for Europe. My conquest was to serve two purposes: Explore and experience what Germany and Austria had to offer, and to throw my beard into the ring at the 2015 World Beard & Mustache Championships in Leogang, Austria! Upon my arrival in Munich, I had two things on my mind. First, was to battle a horrendous case of jet lag, (brought on by nearly 11 hours in the air), and the anticipation of testing my drinking prowess at Munich’s famous Oktoberfest. Yet, as anxious and determined as I was, sleep was a much needed aspect‌

So the next morning, with a well-rested body, I ventured to the fairgrounds of Oktoberfest. Maybe a few of us have been to Helen, Georgia, and seen what we THOUGHT Oktoberfest was… Nothing could be further from the truth… At the Theresienwiese fairground, this expansive area erupts in all directions with tents and stands hosting a cornucopia of local Bavarian favorites, (bratwurst, schnitzel, and pretzels bigger than your head). Intertwined amongst the delicacies are various souvenir shops, local artisan booths, and enough rides and attractions to keep an inebriated visitor busy for hours. But, as many would guess, the aim of this venture was to experience the crown jewel of what Oktoberfest is most famous for…
inebriate, 6,000 thirsty patrons. We were seated at the far end of the hall, with a great view of the entire tent, and had front row viewing of the band and their endless barrage of oompah music. Each member of Beard Team USA was given their first liter, (yes, liter), of fine German beer and half of a chicken to dine upon as a complimentary welcome to the festivities. Further beers, priced at €10.25, were just a holler away. So, €71.75 later, I managed to stumble out of the Schottenhamel beer hall with my head held high. After visiting several more beer gardens, and somehow along the way managing to win a GIANT stuffed dinosaur, I pinballed my way back to the crowded subway. My ride back was fought with peril; an inebriated American and his GIGANTIC stuffed dinosaur don’t make the best of company on a crowded train car. Over the next few days, I visited several of Munich’s top areas of interest. I spent a good deal of time at the Marienplatz main square. Here, a visitor can enjoy various pubs, shops, and an open air-market filled with a variety of

The Beer Halls! Our group, that being Beard Team USA, had made VIP reservations at the Schottenhamel beer hall, one of the eight beer halls located within the Oktoberfest fairgrounds. Each beer hall has the ability to effectively house, and lavishly

goods, foods, odds & ends, as well as a beer garden. The Marienplatz feature much of the older architecture, and at its very center host the ever famous glockenspiel. This 100+ year old clock recreates a 16th century royal wedding as its life sized figurines dance high in the clock tower.

Among other sites were the Englisher Garden (English Garden), created in 1789 and encompassing over 1.4 square miles, (larger than New York’s Central Park), of open area, ponds, and walking trails. I spent several hours in this beautiful park, just enjoying the breathtaking scenery and the crisp October air, a welcome rest from the previous solid day of copious amounts of German beer. I was also able to visit and drink at the world famous Hofbrau house, where I taught the people of Munich how to toast and drink like a Viking! I also visited the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial. The Dachau concentration camp, founded in 1933, was the very first concentration camp ever instituted, and was used as a model for every other concentration camp to be built. The camp was built to house 5,000 prisoners, all subject to the cruel and inhumane acts committed by their captors. However, on Liberation Day, April 29, 1945, American GI’s found over 30,000 prisoners packed inside the camps walls.

“That which makes us men is our beard” This was my last stop on my excursion throughout Munich. The next day, I boarded a bus and took a 3 hour trip (which turned into over 5 hours due to traffic and refugee checks), on my way to Leogang, Austria. When you first enter the city of Leogang, it’s like walking into a scene straight out of the Sound of Music. Green rolling hills, snowcapped peaks, and the town itself nestled in the valley surrounded by mountainous peaks on every side. My first excursion in Leogang was to ride the cable cars and climb the
last 200 meters of Asitz Mountain. As I stood at the peak, at about 6280 ft., I got to see Leogang in its total glory. For the first time ever, I was at a summit where breathing became difficult due to the sheer altitude. However, the hard breathing or steep climb could do nothing to spoil such a spectacular view. Leogang, and its beautiful natural landscape, were a true spectacle to behold. After several fine meals, drinks with new friends, and the seeing the mesmerizing beauty of Leogang, it was October 3rd. It was time to for my beard and I to step into the world arena, and do battle

with over 300 participants in the 2015 World Beard & Mustache Championships! The competition, which included sixteen different categories, pitted these facial hair bearers in front of a board of seven panel judges. Judging in these categories took over 8 hours, in a very close and fiercely competitive showdown among these 300+ of the world’s best. In many categories, secondary judging had

to occur for tie-breakers, and to accurately crown the man who would take home the World Title in his particular category. These facial hair warriors, donned in their best attire and personality, showed out in spectacular fashion to do their best to secure their place in the rankings, and to bring the glory and honor back to their home country. In a competitive sport, long and aggressively dominated by Germans, it was the Americans that fought most valiantly and brought home first place holdings in six of the sixteen categories (I, myself, placing 8th in Full Beard Natural). In this particular category, long hailed as the most difficult and competitive, was won with a perfect score by Portland, Oregon’s own Madison Rowley. In other categories, we saw gold go to Jackie Lynn Ellison (Imperial Moustache), Dan Lawlor (Freestyle Moustache), Jeffrey Moustache (Musketeer), Patrick Fette (English Moustache), and Patrick Langley (Fu Manchu). The next World Championship is set to be held on Labor Day weekend, 2017, in Austin Texas. The competition will then, again, cross the seas and be held in Antwerp, Belgium in 2019. So, in two years’ time, I hope to once again enter the arena of facial hair supremacy and do battle once again in the hopes of securing a World Title! Look out Austin, this mad Viking shall bring the battle once more!
