hen they were calling for April showers, the weatherman wasn’t kidding; but hey, it has made for one heck of a start to May!!! Everything is lush, green, and vibrant in colors and life; it is great to see everything come out from its dormant winter stage. May is packed full of important dates, such as Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. It is also Motorcycle Awareness month!!! Already in a short riding season start, I personally have had too many close calls with drivers simply not paying attention to their surroundings. It didn’t matter if I was on a bike or in a car, we, as people, have become so mindless when operating our vehicles. This month, we need to remember and share properly, “Look Twice and Save a Life”. Though sometimes easier said than done, as our emotions get in the way, we need to better educate our kids first on being more aware of driving and our surroundings. Teach them how to ride. Get them involved. Read more in the article, “Look Twice, Save a Life” in this month’s issue, as well as become an active member of ABATE. There are so many more new events happening this year and we are excited about all the travel and experiences we can bring back and share with you from coast to coast this season. One thing, remember to stop on your journey and enjoy a little more. Though the destination is important, sometimes the journey is what makes the experience last a lifetime. Take time to capture the moments with people and places on the road. If you see something of interest, pull over and take some time to explore. One last note, I want to thank my mother for all the 40+ years of support. There were many a time when my mother could have turned her back on me and walked away, knowing that I deserved just that. She held me accountable for my actions in both good times and in bad. Mothers are special. We need to remember how many sacrifices mothers have endured to raise their children. My mother has been an inspiration throughout my life and continues to inspire me more; her support has gone unwavering. Please celebrate this year our mothers on Mother’s Day. Celebrate life and cherish family as we only live once... I love you mom!

Motorcycle Tech

M

ay marks Motorcycles Awareness Month throughout the country. Even though motorcycles are recognized as a means of transportation across the globe, the states continue to challenge our rights as riders and as people. This month, I challenge each of our readers to become just a little more involved. I am not asking you to vent, but engage in actions that support our rights. For one, become a member of our local ABATE. This year marks the first year that we have passed legislation PRO motorcycles through our voice of ABATE. The last positive movement was over 15 years ago when capital hill listened to our representatives on topics that are important to us as riders. One of the bills passed is the new Red Light Bill, allowing riders, after coming to a complete stop, waiting 90+ seconds at a red light that appears not to have recognized our motorcycles, to be allowed to move

8

through that light in a safe manner without cause of breaking any laws. The second law passed was the repeal to the handlebar height. The law removes any attention to handlebar height, as most motorcycles are "illegal" coming from the manufacturer themselves. If you, as riders, continue to get involved, then even more PRO motorcycle laws could go into affect protecting us more and providing us with better protection, if ever needed. I want to share a story with you I just came across these past few weeks. I met a guy by the name of Mike Bozeman. Funny guy. Great attitude. We hung before, but were formally introduced just a short time ago. Well, Mike proceeded to talk one night about his accident, as we shared some good "war" stories. Unfortunately, a car traveling to close hit Mike.

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE | greaseinc.com | MAY 2015

Motorcycle Tech He was thrown from his motorcycle and now has accumulated over a half million dollars in medical bills from this incident. The driver you ask, well what happened to him? He received a citation for "following too close" and Mike has NEVER heard from him since. This is why it is important to get involved. This is why it is important to stand up for harsher consequences for accidents that involve riders and drivers who simply do not

Too many tragedies have occurred because we simply do not educate people to be aware and to have more respect for our rights.

care. The best part of meeting Mike is his attitude is still full of life. He has not let this change him. If anything, it has made him a stronger person and quite funny at that! But, too many tragedies have occurred because we simply do not educate people to be aware and to have more respect for our rights. In closing, take the time to read more and become educated. Take your voice, in a positive way, to the streets. Get involved and support entities that support us directly. Learn more at www.abatega.org. Take the time to fill out the membership form and mail it in, or go on-line and become a member today. The agenda is simple and the opportunities within our riding community are large. With a bigger voice, our message can be heard. Remember, while teaching our kids to drive this year, "Look Twice, Save a Life... Motorcycles are everywhere!"

What is your favorite Band? I’ve always loved Roy Orbison! Of course I’m a big fan of my dead boyfriend, Mr. Elvis Presley, too! Favorite Song? Heavenly by Harry Connick Jr. It’s an odd one, but it always makes me smile. What is your favorite Movie? That’s a toss-up between The Dirty Dozen and Reservoir Dogs. What type of Hang Outs do you go to? I’m usually at a lot of charity rides and events or car/bike shows. When I’m not doing that, I really love a good dive bar with decent live music. What is your Drink of Choice? I’m a big red wine fan but I love a little Grand Marnier every now and again too. What is a Turn On? Beards! I’m a sucker for a big, bushy bunch of facial follicles! What is a Turn Off? Arrogance. It’s okay to be confident, but you really don’t want to cross that line and become what is known as an arrogant prick. Oh, and liars. Liars are definitely a big, big turn off . Do you change your own oil? I can and I have, but having a mechanic in the house means that I don’t have to anymore.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

Just spelling it brings the music into my head. “All I’m asking is for a little respect when you come home.” The context of the song by Aretha Franklin was typically a personal relationship issue, and my move to the topic is far more general, yet no less significant in our lives. I want to bring home a little more RESPECT for our American veterans and wounded heroes.

32

Of the millions of veterans alive today, huge numbers of WWII and Korean War vets have been passing away due to age, as well as war effect. To put this idea in perspective, of the over 2.7 million Americans who served in Vietnam, less than 850,000 are estimated to be alive today! The younger Vietnam veterans are now past retirement age. We are losing these Vets at 390 per day!

The number of disabled veterans is increasing; more than 20,000 veterans were wounded during service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The wounds are horrific and sometimes the worst are the unseen wounds. WWII, Korea, and Vietnam didn’t process Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSDs) as the medical capacity has grown significantly. I recall so many stories of family members who returned from service to be considered changed significantly by their experiences. The Gulf wars have left a major scar on our culture and the thousands of Vets who served quietly while the rest of America went on about their business. Many have returned to realize jobs hard to find, and a remarkable number are homeless! Here are some short stats courtesy of Veterans, Inc.: One in 10 veterans is disabled, oftentimes by injuries sustained in combat.

34

• The number of disabled veterans is increasing; more than 20,000 veterans were wounded during service in Iraq and Afghanistan. • A bout 70% of homeless veterans suffer from substance abuse problems. • 45% of homeless veterans suffer from mental illness including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). • 1 9% of Iraq veterans report a mental health problem, and more than 11% of Afghanistan veterans. • The incidence of PTSD and suicide rates among veterans is climbing. So let’s all take a moment and reflect on what has been paid for our freedom, as we must truly know it is not free. The price has and will continue to

GREASE INC. MAGAZINE | greaseinc.com | MAY 2015

be paid, and I pray, not casually. Let’s work to provide the RESPECT that is due, and push the numerous organizations and government agencies touted to care for our veterans to deliver at the highest level possible.

GOD BLESS AMERICA! Note: Car collectors and motorcycle enthusiasts have a unique opportunity to have their clubs, meets and event, be (at least in part) fund raisers for wounded veteran support programs. Please check your choices to see the major proton of you donation go to real people, families, etc., BEFORE you make your contributions.

All this combined creates a rock ‘n’ roll cowpunk show sounding like The Damned, Lux Interior, and the Stray Cats making love after a night binging on white lighting. Despite their hellacious ways and attitude, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a finer group of guys who carry with them a high grade of professionalism. With a new album

nearly ready to be released, I sat down with Buck to discuss the state of today’s music, his love for Eddie Spaghetti, and working hard to sell some records. Reverend Andy: Give us a brief history of the band and how the current lineup came to be. Buck McPherson: I formed McPherson Struts in Decatur, GA. in 1997, and played on the Atlanta scene for a year before relocating the band to San Diego, CA. We released our

critically acclaimed debut album “Top Fuel Boogie” in 2000. The album was nominated for best rock album by the 2000 San Diego Music Awards and the band was nominated for best roots rock. Unfortunately we parted ways in 2001. I kicked around SD for a couple of years

38

before moving to Anniston, AL. in 2003. I decided to reform MS with my good friends HR Core and Jeff Freeman in 2006 and released the “Shocker” ep in 2007. In 2009 we released the “Gear Jammin’ “ LP and continued to play all over the Southeast. Current member Devin Williams joined the band in 2012 and our new EP is slated for release in May 2015. RA: What music/musicians have had a direct impact on your playing style? On the sound of the band? BM: Being raised in the south, country music was a big part of my early life. I was under a constant barrage of Johnny Cash, George Jones, Patsy Cline, Merle Haggard and more blaring from my Grandma’s turntable. But I spent my formative years listening to ‘77 style punk (Clash, Damned, Pistols, etc.) But none influenced me more than The Damned. I really enjoyed their spirited stage antics and loved their often humorous lyrics.(They still inspire us to this day, as we try to keep our lyrics lighthearted and funny.) Although the country music of my youth stayed close to my heart and still weighs heavily onto our style, the new recordings are taking us back to our Punk roots. RA: You just finished up a new studio album, what was it like getting back in to record new material? BM: It felt great to get back in the studio mainly because other than a rarities

He pushed for our best performances without being overbearing or intimidating like many producers can be. We left the studio with what I feel are our best recordings to date!

consistent about our songwriting is while I’m writing lyrics I ALWAYS pace around in circles! RA: With the new album done, what are your plans for the rest of the year? BM: Our plan for the rest of the year... Get out on the road and SELL SOME DAMN RECORDS!!! RA: What do you think of mainstream music and what we hear on the radio these days? BM: I try my best not to listen to commercial radio these days, because most of what you hear is pure CRAP! (Oh my God,I sound like my Dad.) But seriously the only emotion that most of today’s music exudes is GREED. I know there has always been the shaky marriage between art and commerce in the music industry, but now it seems the commerce FAR outweighs the artistry. Until true talent and musicianship become a valuable commodity again (and it will) we will continue to be force fed what I consider to be purely disposable music.

40

RA: Are there any musicians you love that the rest of us should be listening to? BM: Right off the bat I wanna say everyone on Earth should own at least one SUPERSUCKERS album! But there are lots of really cool bands criss-crossing the country playing in dive bars and roadhouses that in my opinion should be playing much bigger venues. Here are some of my recent favorites: The Koffin Kats, Nik Flagstar, The Living Deads, The Independents, V-8 Deathcar, Atomic Boogie, and CreepList, just to name a few! RA: What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting their first band? BM: The best advice I can give to someone starting their first band is: No matter what genre of music you choose to play, STICK TO YOUR GUNS! If you believe in what you’re doing, others will come to believe in it too. And oh yeah, rehearse way more than you think you should! ince the beginning of time people have worn catsleopard, tiger, or cheetah skins to stay warm or for protection in battle. In some villages, and even in tribes, the hunters would keep the animal skins as trophies and mount the heads to prove they were the most skilled hunters. Throughout time people wore animal prints, from kings and queens, to the highest-ranking priests who wore leopard robes. The most influential people wore these

prints because they were expensive. Only the wealthiest could afford this luxury. It was a status symbol or a sign of nobility, rather than fashion. Over time the leopard skins turned into faux skins, and eventually into patterns on fabric, shoes, and furniture. Today you can find leopard print on almost anything. Leopard print took the lead in the 20th century. Women everywhere began wearing this print as a fashion statement. By the 1920’s, some actresses and wealthier women began wearing this print out on the town. It wasn’t until the 1940’s that fashion designers started using the print in the fashion scene. Animal prints became a symbol of glamour and sexiness. Some of the most iconic photos of pin up goddess Bettie Page are of her in a cheetah print bathing suit and lingerie. Marilyn Monroe wore body hugging leopard print dresses and accented some of her more conservative outfits with splashes of animal prints. These prints even made their way to the White House through First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Without a doubt, these prints made women more provocative and daring. Fashions go in and out of style every year, but these cool cats have stood the test of time. Today you see these fabulous prints and designs everywhere you look. Leopard print is deeply rooted in all genres of the pin up world. From the cars in the shows, to the beautiful pin up girls, there will be leopard, cheetah, and tiger prints. No matter if you are classic pin up, rockabilly, or a psychobilly kind of guy or doll, you’re going to see it and

wear it. Nowadays, it’s not considered a status symbol or sign of wealth, but more of a reminder of the era of the 40’s and 50’s. These prints make us feel sexy, and a little on the wild side and daring. We like to remember how glamorous the pin ups were wearing these prints, whether it be in a skimpy bathing suit or a full length gown, we like recreating these images. I feel these were the years that really started the legacy of wearing leopard and cheetah prints. So, we will keep wearing our animal prints proudly because we all just wanna be the cat's meow!
