Jeremy and Claire Haswell

Dear Grayshott - Jeremy Haswell

Inspired by Kasia from the Red Rose Tea Room (a tireless fundraiser for Ukraine), Pastor Andriy Kopylash, and I welcomed 300 to a magnificent evening of fundraising for Ukraine at St Luke’s, supported by many individuals and businesses offering Auction Items, and Raffle prizes. The performers were all local artists, with Ukrainian performers linked to Grayshott. It saw the Ukrainian and British communities unite in generosity and love. It was moving, funny and inspiring. The evening itself was sold out, and many expressed disappointment at not being able to come, we hope to host other events like it. In this event I saw Grayshott at its very best. You will see that this month we are picking up on an article in our last magazine about funding the maintenance of St Luke ’s. A Village to Church leaflet is being included for those who feel they would like to support the St Luke ’s as a part of the community. Of course, as I always say, you are all invited to come to use the building as a quiet space to reflect and pray, or to come to our services, or one of the numerous events we host, including the Last Night of the Proms concert coming up soon, but we are inviting you to help us with the upkeep of the fabric, to address some shortfall over the last two years. Thank you for considering this. Let us continue to come together as a community to support our local businesses getting underway again, continue to support our refugees and their families, and remember that the economic circumstances are looking bleak for a growing number amongst us; so having shown great resilience to get through the worst of the Pandemic (we hope) let us extend the kindness by supporting our food banks, and other channels of giving, to help others. The Christian message is not one of stifling joy, but of celebrating Blessings, love.

Dear Grayshott, At the beginning of a new academic year, while some are still living with long term affects of the last two years, we live with the hope that life will continue to expand. And there are things to celebrate! The impact of the war in Ukraine, seems here to stay.

 8  DEAR GRAYSHOTT - JEREMY HASWELL 8

love and peace to you all,

Grayshott Parish Council

Cllr Rachel McCartney – I’m originally from West Sussex and met my husband, Anthony, in Worthing, where we spent ten years. Our daughter, Sofia, was born there in 2007. My work experience is in Marketing, Communications and Events in both private and public sectors. In 2010 we relocated to Geneva, Switzerland, for work, however the UK remained our home and in 2018 we returned and purchased our family home in Grayshott in 2020. I have time for others and I have varied interests: reading, anything creative, skiing, gardening, holistic and beauty therapies, movies, live music, and discovering the world with my family. I joined the council because I feel I have the time to help create and shape the future Grayshott, keeping the village thriving, alive and a place where families want to belong.

Grayshott Parish Council

We want to use this year’s Assembly to provide as many opportunities as possible for groups and individuals to speak or display their work and interests. We have not been able to hold this event during the last two years, during which time new residents and business have arrived and community groups have developed. This will be a chance to remember, or learn, all that Grayshott has to offer. There will be an opportunity during the evening for community organisations and clubs to have a stall or exhibit.

Lastly there will be further opportunities for informal conversations over a glass of wine, visits to the stalls and short briefings about local initiatives and plans for the Platinum Jubilee weekend in June.

Thank you for reading. Mrs Katie Weir Parish Clerk and Executive Officer 01428 606510, clerk@grayshott pc.gov.uk

I’m a Chartered Quantity Surveyor with 33 years ’ experience; mainly in community based projects schools, churches, housing etc. Prior to retirement in 2017, I was Estates Director for United Learning, one of the UK ’s largest charities. I’m now a part time management consultant, business coach, mentor and Chair of Governors at St Ives School. My interests include choral singing, walking, swimming and yoga.

If there is a Parish Council, then the Parish Council by law must organise and pay for the annual parish meeting or assembly but the meeting does not have to be exclusively concerned with the business of the Parish Council. We believe that this latter part is important. A good Assembly should cover matters that the residents or electors want to discuss.

If you live in Grayshott and are interested in renting an allotment, please get in touch with us. We expect to have some plots available to rent later this year.

Cllr Dennis Homer I am originally from North East England and have lived in Grayshott for the last 12 years. My wife Barbara and I moved here to retire and to be nearer our family. We have thoroughly enjoyed living in Grayshott and have participated in village life which we find to be diverse, vibrant, friendly and with a real community spirit. I worked in the construction industry in the UK and abroad and am now able to give something back to the village. The experience and skills I have learnt I will try to apply for the benefit of community. To me it is important that we act as custodians of the village and its way of life and I will try to maintain the many positive attributes of our unique village whilst being open to embracing new ideas and ways of doing things.

9

The Parish Assembly may not be an event that is widely understood so what is it? To put it simply it is a meeting for all residents of Grayshott to come together to discuss matters affecting our village.

Your New Councillors - The Parish Council has co -opted three new councillors to join their team: Cllr Graham Harvey -Browne - Originally from Kent, I moved to Guildford in 1982. I’m married to Carmen; we have three children and six grandchildren. We settled in Grayshott in 2021 where we enjoy the village and appreciate the well kept facilities. My key interest is maintaining their quality, making sure that they’re kept up to date and relevant for the whole community.

Please get in touch if you would like to reserve a space. The more formal part of the evening will start at 7.30pm with a keynote speaker followed by reports from the Chairman of the Parish Council, and our County and District Councillors. We plan to make reports available in advance so that this can be kept short as possible. This will be followed by a questions and answers session the Council ’s opportunity to hear from you!

I wasn’t an exception. I always dreamt about traveling, because every journey gave me the feeling of freedom, happiness, new opportunities. I ’ve chosen my profession as a translator to feel more comfortable in other countries and to help people to communicate. But it was the longest trip of my life that I never expected or wanted. To stay somewhere for holidays and to live in another country are completely different things. It wasn ’t the first flight of my life, but when I landed in London, I felt so lost. Even if my family were here, the world was tearing apart in front of me. When your whole life fits in one suitcase, everything that was so important yesterday, completely loses its meaning. I am struggling to describe my feelings with words, but I think every Ukrainian that has had to flee can understand it. From the first seconds in Great Britain the people were really kind to me. I never could imagine receiving so much warmth and acceptance in another country. All this time I felt that I didn ’t deserve it. Who am I to be here? Who am I to receive all of this? These questions were really loud in my mind, especially after reading all of this frightening Atnews.one point I lost track of the days. I only knew what day of the war it was. Everything else was so blurred. Only after 5 months I realized that I need to live somehow. I need to face all this pain inside me, instead life would be unbearable. It`s a great feeling to have the opportunity to help other people and to go through tough times together. However I can say for sure that nothing would be possible without God.

On becoming a Refugee, a Young Person’s Perspective. Refugee? What does it mean? In the Cambridge Dictionary you can find the definition of this word it is a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution or a national disaster. In our world, unfortunately, it happens really often, but for me it was an ordinary word, without special meaning until one day. This year my life slightly changed. Not only did I learn more about this definition, but I became a refugee for real. I never expected that it would happen to me. Every person has some plans for life, goals to achieve, big dreams.

It was an article in the Arts Society Magazine which prompted me. The article was entitled ‘Tales of Seeking Shells’ and went on to describe the feverish mania for collecting seashells during the 18 th century. Joseph Banks, one of the founding members of the Royal Horticultural Society, amassed a fine collection which is now in the Natural History Museum in London. It was the Arts Society article which sent me hunting into the dark recesses of a bedroom cupboard to bring out a box I cannot have opened for 30-40 years. The box contains a modest collection, carefully catalogued and covered in layers of cotton wool. Of about 70 Inseashells.1974and ’75, with three small children and very little spare money, we rented a holiday flat on the coast of Pembrokeshire and armed with a copy of ‘Collins Pocket Guide to the Seashore ’ we spent our holiday collecting seashells from the beach during the day and identifying and cataloguing them by night, whilst child minding, all for free. In 1976 our holiday stretched to the coast of Brittany, and we repeated our low cost amusement of collecting more seashells. In these visits and an impromptu visit to the coast of Cumbria we built our collection of seashells with enticing names such as the Wendletrap, Warty Venus, Blue Rayed Limpet and Pelican ’s Foot Shell. Admittedly these shells are nowhere near as beautiful as the rare and fabled ‘Glory of the Sea’ shell or the ‘Golden Cowrie’ both from the Indo Pacific, but they are all fascinating molluscs [snails] each filling some tiny niche in the overall ecology of our oceans. Molluscs, with over 90,000 described living species, are second only to insects in number [over one million]. They can be traced back to fossils in the Cambrian period, some 500 million years ago and have successfully colonised terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments. We know, to our cost as gardeners, that most molluscs [slugs and snails] are vegetarian grazers, but some such as the Giant and Colossal Squids are fearsome predators of the deep. From my shellcollection

Tales of Seeking Shells

From amongst those shells in our box, one of my favourites is less than half an inch long. It is egg shaped, glossy, has transverse ridges and three dark spots on the dorsal top. It is the ‘European or Spotted Cowrie’ which Judith first found on the Cumbrian coast, but common from the Mediterranean to Scotland. This tiny shell belongs to the group of ‘Cowries’, some of the most beautifully marked of all seashells found most abundantly in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. On our wider travels in later years, we collected several. Each is characteristically egg shaped, highly glossy, smooth and ranging in colour from pure white [The ‘Egg Cowrie’] to nearly black, with an infinite number of spots,[ ‘Leopard / Tiger Cowries ’] and infinite colours and patterns, are of which go towards distinguishing one species from One,another.the ‘Money Cowrie’ [ Monetaria moneta], was used as currency before coinage became available and was widely used in the slave trade in Africa. The rare Golden Cowrie was used in Fiji around the neck as a badge of rank. Cowries have also been used in jewellery, as dice and in ritual Theceremonies.nexttime you are on the beach you might perhaps look more closely at the calcified remains of the beautiful world of seashells beneath your feet. Searching for seashells is an interesting and intriguing way of passing time, especially when the pennies have to be more carefully watched. This pastime also has the advantage of being free.

In my scribblings in last month’s Grayshott Today I was fortunate enough to have the chance to highlight the many achievements of the main man, Alan Barnes. Now that the Editor has kindly offered me a two page spread in the September issue I thought it right to give you some background information on the many and varied talents and careers of his backing trio. I hope you enjoy learning a bit more about these talented and experienced musicians. Let’s start with: Dave Newton. Jazz Pianist

 26  JAZZ ROYALTY CAME TO GRAYSHOTT 26

After the fabulous celebrations of the Queen’s Platinum weekend events in Grayshott we regular jazzers, plus many new faces in the audience, were treated to true Jazz legends in the guise of The Alan Barnes Quartet on Tuesday 14th. This quartet treated the 60 or so audience to an evening of truly memorable jazz playing in its purest form. Their repertoire mixed a fusion of Swing, Bossa Nova and Modern Jazz, switching seamlessly between the genres one number after another in a scintillating example of their combined talents for approaching two hours. Between numbers we were kept amused by Alans dry wit with quips and stories, making us chuckle throughout the evening. If he ever looses his ability to blow his Saxophones he could always attempt stand up on the comedy circuit. In that case Alan, please keep practicing!!!!!!!

Growing up in Renfrewshire, Dave was raised. in a household full of great jazz music, including the likes of Peterson, Tatum and Garner, all fabulous jazz pianists. This is where Dave’s love of Jazz was born, particularly jazz piano. After graduating from Leeds College of Music in 1979 he freelanced around Yorkshire, culminating in a 30 month residency at Steven Joseph Theatre in Scarborough. From there he returned to his Scottish roots where he became a well established member of the jazz scene in and around Edinburgh. After reuniting with his old college mate, Alan Barnes, who persuaded him to move to London his reputation grew rapidly leading to recording a number of albums on both his own record label and others. His ability to adapt to different jazz vocalists made him valuable to greats such as Marion Montgomery, Annie Ross and, of course, Stacey Kent. He has had a long association with the renowned playwright, Alan Aykbourn, spanning some 20 years, composing the music to “Sugar Daddies” and “Drowning on Dry Land” amongst others. Dave has been voted best Jazz Pianist in the British Jazz awards six times and he was made a Fellow of Leeds College of music in 2003.

“Bobby is now playing at the absolute top of his game ” Having seen him play at Grayshott, everyone in the audience would absolutely agree with Alans assessment of Bobby ’s exceptional talent.

Andy Cleyndert. Double Bass Born in Birmingham in 1963 Andy is the “baby” of the quartet, but only in years attained !! He first took up the double bass whilst at school and turned professional in 1982 as the resident bassist at the George Chisolm Club in Manchester where he backed visiting Jazz soloists, including Americans such as Art Farmer and Joe Newman. From Manchester to London in 1982 he quickly established himself as a highly versatile bassist capable of working in a wide variety of situations. He toured with a number of bands led by the likes of Bobby Wellins, Don Weller and Dean Kunitz, this experience led to him becoming a member of Ronnie Scott Sextet and Quartet with which he toured the Caribbean, The Middle East and Europe, culminating in working at the world famous Ronnie Scotts Club in London. Andy has also toured with Stan Tracey in countries including China and Canada, as well as working with Annie Ross amongst other highly respected jazz singers. He hooks up with Alan Barnes as often as his very busy schedule allows and has been nominated for the Jazz Awards every year since its inception. So, along with bands with the reputation of The Temperance Seven, Cheek to Cheek featuring Enrico Tomasso and Joanna Eden, The FB Pocket Orchestra, amongst many other superb and respected bands, we can now add The Alan Barnes Quartet. And, of course not forgetting our resident band of lovely Troubadour’s in the shape of Binky’s Dixey Demons

All of this has been made possible by our founder , Michael Dieghan who seems to know everyone who is someone in the `British jazz Scene’. If this tribute to both the wide variety of musicians and their incredible massed talents has whetted your appetite to try something new to entertain you in Grayshott on the last Tuesday of every month throughout the year why don ’t you come and join us, we can accommodate up to 100 and, with our average monthly audience of around 50/60, there will still be room for you. Will Broadhurst

.

Bobby Worth. Percussionist and drummer Bobby could and probably should be classed as a veteran of the skins. As a jazz drummer he has few equals and, since his debut with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra in 1966, he has built a justified reputation with a wide range of experience and expertise, ranging from performing in a number of West End stage shows, to recording and performing with some of top American and British jazz artists. In the opinion of Alan Barnes, amongst other jazz greats,

Further to being awarded Runner Up to Surrey Artist of the Year last autumn, I am grateful for the increasing attention I continue to receive. Here are a few moments to share. 2022 started with me being one of eight selected Surrey-based artists celebrating the county’s treasured landscapes in Heartlands: Inspired by Our Landscape at Watts Contemporary Gallery. I was delighted to submit work for this exhibition reflecting my love of where I have lived for 38 years. The height of my year, however, was winning two awards at the Holly Bush Emerging Woman Painter Prize event in June. This annual event champions women artists. Women are underrepresented in the major roles in the art world and are paid less. The exhibition offers a genuine opportunity for emerging women artists to further their career and for art collectors to invest in the future of the art -world’s emerging talent. Each year, 22 Finalists are chosen from this competition to exhibit in London.

Normally, only one painting per artist is allowed in the final but due to pressure from the sponsors, TWO of my paintings broke trend and were selected. Not only that, I came away with two awards: The Euan Millar Abstract Prize and The Susan Angoy Prize for an artist of African or Caribbean descent. Both works are sold: “Emergence” a few weeks before the exhibition opened and later “The Color Purple.” Both form part of my ongoing heritage series.

I have reservations about those who expect consistency in an artist ’s style. For me, I prefer to develop my approach. It ’s this that drives me on, and that is my voice: the changing use of my visual language is my art. I am exhibiting in several exhibitions this autumn and winter both locally and in London.

Record Inheritance Tax bills are a reminder of the need for good estate planning

If you are uncertain about where you stand regarding IHT and would like to know more about how to minimise the sums falling into the hands of HMRC, or your local authority through longterm care fees, you should seek advice. The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time and are dependent on individual *circumstances.

There are few more confusing – or unpopular – taxes than Inheritance Tax (IHT). In October 2019, HM Revenue and Customs published Estimated Costs of Tax Reliefs indicating further confusion and inertia as it expects to see a 19% increase in IHT revenues over the next four years. For older generations, paying up to 40% tax on what they leave behind is difficult to contemplate. For some children and grandchildren, grappling with IHT is something they are ill-equipped to do. Yet more and more families are having to deal with IHT. The latest figures show that IHT receipts reached £5.1 billion in the 2019/2020 tax year, according to an HMRC tax report published in May 2020. Although a fall of £0.4 billion from the previous year, this was likely due to the increase in the residence nil-rate band threshold, which has been introduced in stages since 2017-18. It will undoubtedly come as a shock to discover that a large proportion of your wealth, which includes the family home, investments including Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs), life assurance plans not in trust, and even old family heirlooms might actually have to be sold to meet the tax liability on death. The previous rises in receipts largely reflected the surge in residential property prices, as well as the recovery in other asset values, which has dragged more households into the IHT net. From April 2020, the residence nilrate band rose to £175,000, for those whoOncequalify.considered a tax on the truly affluent, IHT now affects more estates than ever Coupled with the fact that up to the first £325,000 of an individual’s estate may be exempt from IHT, this will mean that, subject to certain conditions, a married couple and civil partners could have a combined tax-free estate worth £1,000,000 in the 2020/2021 tax year.

effect death duties can have on families’ plans to create and pass on wealth. There are many perfectly legitimate ways of mitigating IHT through foresight and careful financial planning. The mitigation of IHT does not require high-powered tax planning; only a willingness to discuss the issue, act and make use of the many options available, establishing trusts* where appropriate; and making use of annual exemptions such as gifting. The rules surrounding IHT on individuals domiciled in the UK – or resident – are complex. Certain transfers are also deemed exempt from the tax if they pass between a husband and wife or civil partners.

The end of an era at Grayshott & District Housing Association was marked by a special gift to Caroline Kaighin. Caroline had served on the Board of Trustees for twenty years, during those years she took on many roles including being Chairman of Maintenance, Vice Chairman of the Board and acting as Treasurer. Caroline took responsibility of the many upgrades of properties, which included designing kitchens and bathrooms, choosing fitments, and coordinating the many trades people involved not an easy task. Her local knowledge has been invaluable and will be missed. Caroline was given a special limited-edition vase from the Grayshott Pottery to say a big thank you for her dedication to ensure the charity provided good quality affordable homes in the village. Grayshott & District Housing Association is a small group of volunteer trustees with diverse backgrounds, supported by a part time paid administrator and would welcome two or three additional Board members to add to the skills and experience. The key qualification for a trustee is enthusiasm for providing quality affordable housing in the Grayshott area. We particularly encourage those people with practical property management, legal or similar experience to volunteer!! If you would like to know how you might help us, please contact Teresa Jamieson at teresa.jamieson@btinternet.com or call 01428 604754. Alternatively speak to our administrator, Kelly-Jo Lovell on 07891 057631 to get more information. Caroline Kaigen, over 20 years of service.

 43  DAME AGNES (AGGIE) WESTON – MOTHER OF THE ROYAL NAVY 43

One of the soldiers, sailing to distant parts on a troop ship at the time, showed a letter he had received from Agnes to the sailors on board, and so began her much valued link with the Navy. This task grew rapidly, with her writing more and more letters to seamen, wherever they might have been, and eventually this was turned into a newsletter, called “Ashore and Afloat”, which she continued to write personally (never dictated) once a month for 38 years until her death. She never missed a month, even when laid low in hospital with a broken leg, on one occasion. By the end of 1909 she had mailed a total of 770,680 copies of her newsletter to Royal Navy men throughout the world.

DAME AGNES (AGGIE) WESTON - Mother of the Royal Navy Aggie Weston is still, to this day, well known for her devotion to the welfare of sailors of the Royal Navy. For many years, up until her death in 1918, she committed her life to her charitable work, which, amongst other things, involved setting up and maintaining a number of Sailors’ Rests, or clubs, for the welfare and benefit of sailors whilst they were ashore. It all began when she started to organise recreational facilities for the troops of the Somerset militia, stationed near Portsmouth at the time. When these soldiers left England , to serve in many parts of the Empire and beyond, she kept in touch with them by writing to many of them, to provide a link with home.

A sailor wrote to her “We never light our pipes with your letters, because you thinks and cares for us ”.

AGNES

 44  DAME AGNES (AGGIE) WESTON – MOTHER OF THE ROYAL NAVY 44

DAME (AGGIE) WESTON - Mother of the Royal Navy Her concern with the welfare of her sailors also led her to set up a sailor’s rest home in Portsmouth, somewhere for the young ratings to stay and relax, rather than roaming the dangerous streets at night. This was a great success, and very soon there were Sailors’ Rests in all the main naval bases, including several abroad. They were so popular that some local pubs even closed down in the face of the competition, and were then taken over by Agnes to provide even more facilities. In 1901, she moved into “Ensleigh”, in Crossways Road, where she lived for seven years, which she described as being “among the pines and heather, with some picturesque woodland attached, sheltered from the winds, and near the church and post office”. This provided her with easy access both to Portsmouth as well as London, by rail and by road. She was also well known in Grayshott for bringing parties of sailors from Portsmouth to give concerts in the Village Hall, usually at her own expense, and these evenings were renowned for their jollity. In November 1902, for example, the Hall was full to overflowing when a party of her sailors presented an evening of “The Bluejackets in the Fo ’cle”, with total ticket sales amounting to a healthy £17. It was said that the events were followed with rapt attention, and only interrupted by frequent and hearty applause. To the sailors under her wing she was always, simply, “Aggie”. The value of the Rests was recognised by Queen Victoria, who bestowed her patronage, and the prefix “Royal ”, on the Sailor’s Rests. The Queen met Agnes on several occasions, and took a close personal interest in her work. She was even given permission to go on board warships of the Royal Navy and “speak freely to the sailors” without being supervised, a privilege completely denied to all other civilians, either male or female.

Receiving the honour of being appointed a Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) in June 1918 for her work, she sadly died shortly after, in Devonport at the age of seventy eight, just a few weeks before the end of the First World War. At her funeral, a huge gathering of over two thousand officers and men crowded into Western Mill cemetery to pay their respects. She had the distinction at the time of becoming the only woman ever to be given a full ceremonial Royal Navy funeral, in honour of her work. In 1940 a frigate named HMS “Weston -Super-Mare” very quickly became affectionally known as “Aggie on Horseback”. As she herself said, living her life “among the bluejackets, I wish nothing better than to live and die in such happy service. When I die I should like to die in harness, and to keep my flag flying to the last ”. Today, a Blue Plaque adorns the front wall of Ensleigh, unveiled at a ceremony by Mr Brian Deverson, the Executive Director of the Royal Sailor’s Rest, the charity started all those years ago by Dame Agnes. A letter to her dated 23rd December 1908 from Buckingham Palace said “The King commands me to say that nobody is better aware of, or more thoroughly appreciates, the great work you have done for the British sailor, and for their wives and children also, than His Majesty is, and he thanks you sincerely for the same ”.

Aggie and her Sailors, late 1880s

Receiving the honour of being appointed a Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) in June 1918 for her work, she sadly died shortly after, in Devonport at the age of seventy eight, just a few weeks before the end of the First World War. At her funeral, a huge gathering of over two thousand officers and men crowded into Western Mill cemetery to pay their respects. She had the distinction at the time of becoming the only woman ever to be given a full ceremonial Royal Navy funeral, in honour of her work.

In 1940 a frigate named HMS “Weston Super Mare” very quickly became affectionally known as “Aggie on Horseback”. As she herself said, living her life “among the bluejackets, I wish nothing better than to live and die in such happy service. When I die I should like to die in harness, and to keep my flag flying to the last ”.

Refreshed after a summer break, we ’re looking forward to keeping St Luke’s busy with a Friends Exclusive evening, our Patron ’s Gala and an all-American evening of 20 th century classics all coming up over the next few months.

Those of you that know children attending Grayshott CE Primary may well have already heard all about this as it’s a rerun of the 150th anniversary concert that we put on for them in mid June and avid readers of Grayshott Today may recall the write up in the last issue. One major difference for our Friends Evening is that we have a new Narrator, who will be putting his own inimitable stamp on the performance. Guiding you along will be none other than BAFTA nominated actor Simon Callow (Amadeus, Room with a View, Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Shakespeare in Love). His unique voice is sure to make this evening even more memorable.

On the programme for that concert is a double-bill of two wellknown works, Prokofiev’s ‘Peter and the Wolf’ and Saint-Saens’ ‘Carnival of the Animals’, performed by London Mozart Players. Children’s book illustrator James Mayhew will also be painting along as the stories unfold you’ll see his work on the big screen as we go along, quite incredible!

CONCERT FOR THE UKRAINE 56 Concert for the Ukraine

Bill Guyford , Pastor Andriy Kopylash and Mike Deighan

A huge thank you to everyone who supported the Concert for Ukraine held in St Luke's Church. The Concert was a great success raising over £8000 for the Ukraine Territorial Defence units that we are helping. We would like to thank all the performers and people involved, especially the delightful Sandi Toksvig for holding the whole concert together. There were Ukrainian refugees performing Ukrainian songs, Oleksa and his children, the wonderful Kler and Emmanuel, brilliant and entertaining performances by Mike Deighan, Bill Guyford and Hannah Smillie, talented Violinist Shoshana, a Poem read in both Ukrainian and English by Larissa and Jeremy, a message from one of the Ukrainian soldiers thanking everyone for their donations and pictures from Kyiv, which brought out the tissues. But the Concert ended on a high note. Donations and money are still needed via Red Rose Tearoom.

Several examples of the use of music in advertising were seen and using both recorded music and his own guitar playing and singing, Tony demonstrated how numerous pop stars and musical artists have taken phrases from classical music in order to create their own tunes thus taking the original classics into a new era.

 59  THE ARTS SOCIETY’S JULY LECTURE

According to polls, Classical music is becoming more popular particularly with younger people and our July speaker, Tony Rawlins, explored some of the reasons Accesswhy.to all kinds of music has never been easier. Online streaming enables it to be accessed anywhere and at any time. Some of the most popular pieces of Classical Music have previously been used in video games a media which exposes vast numbers of mostly younger people to it. Chamber Music composed by Baroque musicians, was originally written for a very small orchestra to play in a small room or chamber. Much of this and other music is now used in an ever increasing range of ways, enabling it to be heard by vast audiences engendering far greater popularity than when it was written. Take Ravel ’s Bolero for example, few people had heard this prior to the Winter Olympics in 1984 when Torvill and Deane used it for their winning ice skating routine viewed around the world by millions of people. Likewise, Pavarotti singing ‘Nessum Dorma’ from ‘Turandot’ for the 1994 World Football Cup, led to Puccini ’s aria becoming one of the most well know classical tunes of all time. Film extracts were shown illustrating the use of classical music to heighten emotion. The first ‘Talkies’ used it extensively because it was copyright free and the playing of Rachmaninov ’s Piano Concerto number 2 in David Lean’s ‘Brief Encounters’ certainly added pathos to the film.

The Arts Society’s July Lecture

The society ’s next event is on Thursday 1st September at 2.00 p.m. when Dr Paul Roberts will give his talk ’Last Supper in Pompeii ’ based on the recent exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
