Dear Grayshott, Christmas is coming! It is a season of wonder, which some people frame as something for children. It is important for children, and the look on the face of a child gazing at a beautiful Christmas tree, or at some sparkling lights, is priceless.
I am delighted to see how the village is coming together in collaborations between various groups to make Christmas special. The Parish Council, and St Edmund ’s School are joining with St Luke’s to coordinate all the events, including a late night shopping evening to ensure our local businesses are also involved.
St Luke’s is delighted to present the Concert on December 4th with the Choir at St Edmund’s and Excelsis Choir helping to make it a special evening. Do come and bring the whole family to support this wonderful evening with music and readings.
This is also a difficult time for some, with anxiety over how we are all doing to cope with the price of fuel, and food; and for others it is a time when loved ones are remembered. Whatever your situation, you are invited to any, or many, of our services, or events in the village. These will be culminating in our Christingle Service, Carols in the Square and Midnight Mass in the Church on Christmas Eve, and on Christmas Day morning, our service in the Church.
With the challenges that many are facing, let us all pull together, and this year try to make hospitality and kindness to others our key focus, and share what we have to bless others.
Jesus came as the “Light of the World, and the Nativity story we are remembering on Sunday 18th at 10.30 with children from Grayshott School, has all the wonder, and sparkle that Christmas ever needed! Come and celebrate and let us help to bring wonder to your Christmas this year.
Bless you all and thank you all for every contribution to our community. with our love, Jeremy and Claire Haswell

Dear Grayshott - Jeremy Haswell
Grayshott Parish Assembly
Friday 29th April starting at 7pm at The Village Hall
Grayshott Parish Council
GRAYSHOTT PARISH COUNCIL
The Parish Assembly may not be an event that is widely understood so what is it? To put it simply it is a meeting for all residents of Grayshott to come together to discuss matters affecting our village.
Grayshott Parish Council Wins Best Council in Hampshire and IOW Award, 2022. Grayshott Parish Council came out on top of all parish and town councils to win the 2022 ‘Best Council ’ award. The Council was also runner up in the ‘Best Website’ category.
If there is a Parish Council, then the Parish Council by law must organise and pay for the annual parish meeting or assembly but the meeting does not have to be exclusively concerned with the business of the Parish Council. We believe that this latter part is important. A good Assembly should cover matters that the residents or electors want to discuss.
These prestigious local government awards are not only recognition of the efforts of your officers and Councillors but are a tribute to the approach Grayshott Council takes to its work.
The judging panel recognised work to ensure Grayshott is a dementia friendly community providing dementia awareness training for Councillors, business owners and residents; the launch of a dementia drop in café; the co -operative approach to harness local expertise engaging with the Hunter Centre in Haslemere and Grayshott Surgery.
We want to use this year’s Assembly to provide as many opportunities as possible for groups and individuals to speak or display their work and interests. We have not been able to hold this event during the last two years, during which time new residents and business have arrived and community groups have developed. This will be a chance to remember, or learn, all that Grayshott has to offer.
Grayshott Council ’s efforts to ensure social inclusiveness with its community transport pilot following resident consultations, together with focus on the local natural environment was commended. Engagement with the community on the establishment of a community orchard, initiatives to acquire and maintain Applegarth Meadow and its work with residents on various activities highlight efforts to improve the quality of life for residents.
There will be an opportunity during the evening for community organisations and clubs to have a stall or exhibit. Please get in touch if you would like to reserve a space.
The more formal part of the evening will start at 7.30pm with a keynote speaker followed by reports from the Chairman of the Parish Council, and our County and District Councillors. We plan to make reports available in advance so that this can be kept short as possible. This will be followed by a questions and answers session –the Council ’s opportunity to hear from you!
The Council could not achieve what it does without involvement, help and support from our residents. This award is for all of our residents and highlights what a wonderful place Grayshott is to live.
For more information about the work of Grayshott Parish Council browse our website www.grayshott pc.gov.uk and sign up to receive our weekly newsletter at the foot of the homepage.
After School Club
Lastly there will be further opportunities for informal conversations over a glass of wine, visits to the stalls and short briefings about local initiatives and plans for the Platinum Jubilee weekend in June.
Allotments
In partnership with the St Luke’s youth worker we would like to provide a weekly after school club from January at the Sports Pavilion to support secondary school children with their homework. We are looking for residents with teaching experience to help with this initiative. Please get in touch if this interest you.
Thank you for reading.
If you live in Grayshott and are interested in renting an allotment, please get in touch with us. We expect to have some plots available to rent later this year.
Thank you for reading.

RED ROSE TEA ROOMS SUPPORT FOR THE UKRAINE
My life from the 24th of February and what I have done thanks to your help!
I will never forget when I heard that Russia started attacking Ukraine…
When people saw how I was reacting to the news the first thing they would ask me was if I knew someone from Ukraine or if I have family there. I remember the pain that was tearing my heart apart, the images on the news and newspaper articles. I remember the image of a grown man ’s eyes full off tears when he was sending his wife and kids to Poland so he could stay and fight for his country. I was so upset by the personal stories I heard on the news over the next few days, I was barely able to work, and I couldn ’t stop crying. It affected me more than I would have imagined.
At that moment I knew I had to do something. I knew I wanted this help to be appropriate and targeting specific people. Imagine what it would be like if the people in your community and who this week are working in their chosen career as doctors, dentists or musicians next week find themselves with a gun in their hand fighting for their freedom. That’s probably not something we will ever seriously have to contemplate here in the UK but it ’s exactly what’s happening in Ukraine. They are living with the constant sound of bombs being dropped around them, with the smell of rotting and burning bodies and with not knowing when or how this will all end.
Thanks to your amazing support and help we can send parcels firstly to Poland, then they have made their way to Ukraine every Saturday since the 5th of March. The total value of items purchased by you has exceeded £45,000. Some of the things we have been able to buy so far are :

After 8 months I can say that yes, I know people from Ukraine, I have direct contact with the people that are out there fighting. You ’re probably wondering how it works, well I have messages from them saying what a specific unit or specific person is in need off, normally when it’s a specific person I receive their name, a picture, and their sizes. When I pack the parcels, I always label where it needs to go after it gets to Ukraine, and I later receive a picture of the soldiers with their items, like a sleeping bag. This makes me feel that everything we are doing makes a lot of sense, it ’s specific and extremely needed. I am immensely thankful to every single person that has or still is helping. Above all I am extremely proud and moved by your sense of solidarity with Ukraine .

Now that Ukraine is on the counteroffensive, I am terrified. Honestly, I don’t know what I should write or what to talk about, so much emotion, pain, hope and concern. I’m not sure what’s more important, the fact that we are so close to winter: I received a photo what the front line looks like, how the men are hiding from attacks, it looks like holes dug up in the ground, I have a photo of the trenches. At this moment the guys are in need off thick sleeping bags, coats, thermal underwear, winter shoes but I don’t have the money to buy it all, and the money I do have won’t be enough for everyone. Or should I write about one man called Vadim, 32 years old, last year he got married, he had the whole world in front of him and his love by his side. After the war started, without a second of hesitation he joined the army. A few weeks back I packed him a parcel, with the most needed items and now he’s gone People are still dying there, unfortunately I have more stories like the one above. Or maybe I should be writing about all the paramedics, all the destroyed ambulances, there was a massive explosion a few weeks ago that caused a large number of ambulances to blow up, thankfully no one was injured but they aren’t able to help, they need all new equipment. I have a photo on my phone of guys sleeping in basements, in very bad conditions, labelled “we aren’t homeless, we are fighting for our country and our futures” I also have a video that one of the guys recorded to have it passed on to his wife in case he doesn’t make it I could go on and on about the stories and horrible things that are happening. I really want to ask for help but I would also like for us to remember that there are terrifying things going on, people are being killed and tortured there every day. Sometimes people think they can’t help because they can’t afford to or they don ’t have the means to but trust me just by spreading the word and disagreeing with the situation is a big step in helping Ukraine overcome the evil.

HEADLEY DOWN FOOD BANK
Headley Down Food Bank
The Headley Down Food Bank was started in 2008 and we provide a friendly place to come, collect a bag of food, have a cup of tea/ coffee and chat to friends each week. We are currently supporting approximately 70 families (111 adults + 100 children) although these figures can fluctuate each week.
Because of the increase of the cost of living through gas/electricity price rises and the rising cost of food, sadly, we have seen an increase this year in the numbers of people needing help. We are helping more families now, than during the pandemic.
Our thoughts are turning to Christmas and we are arranging for children to visit Father Christmas, which will be free and will include a small gift. Also, we will be providing Christmas hampers, for which we are always appreciative of donated Christmas goodies
Donations of food are always welcome and there are various places to donate - Grayshott Surgery, One Stop Headley Down, Sainsbury’s and the Co-Op in Grayshott, Headley Fine Foods, Headley Down Food Bank and Chaparral, Downsview Road, Headley Down.
We have recently signed up to the Bankthefood app. This app gives up- to-date information on items that we need, it shows where the drop off points are and will even remind you of our current needs when you go to one of our drop -off points. It’s very easy to download on to your phone.
We are also very grateful for cash donations, as demand is outstripping food donations and we are buying in more food every week. If you would like more details on how to make a cash donation please contact Pauline for details on how to donate.
For anyone needing help at this time, please contact Pauline for further details. Opening time: 1pm to 3.00pm – every Wednesday

Happy Christmas everybody! In undertaking to compile this seasonal crossword. I suddenly found myself thinking deeply as to how to set an amusement based mind game against the backdrop of divine subject matter. If we think deeply, as we all should, about what Christmas is really about and then consider a setter’s task you may begin to gather my drift ?
My problem here is balance: There are at least two aspects to people’s perception of Christmas. There is for some, perhaps many, the commercial consideration i.e. Xmas is all about “presents, decorations, parties, Christmas cards, family and turkeys” etc; and because of this, perhaps the most important baby of all, is thrown out with the Christmas turkey as leftovers? Or perhaps hopefully, most people at least, retain a residual thought that there was a baby Jesus and that is “lovely” and food for deeper thought.
As an incidental, that may come as a shock to many, I mention the Three Wise Men also known as “The Magi”. The first point to make is that they were not just “three blokes on camels” who crossed from Persia into enemy held territory (the Romans were in occupation at the time). The Magi were King Makers and very important people skilled in the science of the day and would have had an escort of perhaps 1,500 cavalry, according to one very respected Christian writer and historian*.
So! What has this to do with Christmas crossword setting ?
It is all about balance! Where does the compiler place emphasis and what impression should be left to the solver, whether they complete the puzzle or not? This setter intends to include reference to both the commercial aspects and pays deep homage to the divine in parallel.
God Bless and happy Puzzling

MOON CACTUS – A PLANT ODDITY
GORDON RAE
Moon Cactus A Plant Oddity Gordon Rae
“
Unreal, unnecessary and unbelievably vulgar.”
So speak many purists to describe the plant oddity called the ‘Moon Cactus’ also known as ‘Ruby Ball ’ ‘Hibotan’ and ‘Red Cap,’ the Moon Cactus although an oddity, is an interesting ‘plant’ both botanically and historically.
The Moon Cactus is a plant of two halves. The bottom half or ‘root stock’ is produced from a green, chlorophyll bearing terrestrial or epiphytic cactus, Hylocereus undatus, which left naturally would produce the tropical ‘Dragon Fruit’. The top half or ‘scion’, is a naturally brightly coloured, chlorophyll free mutant cactus, Gymnocalycium mihanovichii var. friedrichii which is grafted onto the root stock. This cactus, because it does not contain chlorophyll, cannot manufacture food for itself and draws its food supplies from the grafted green root stock beneath. It is a true parasite. If left alone it would die.
To produce the Moon Cactus, the top is cut off a root stock plant and the scion is cut across its base to expose the vascular tissue of each piece. By carefully placing one cut surface on top of the other and overlapping the visible vascular bundles of each, the two can then be held firmly together with a band around the top cactus and the base of the pot until the graft has sealed and the brightly coloured top starts to feed happily from the rootstock below.
Cacti can live from a few to 200 or more years. The Moon Cactus will live for only a few because the two grafted cacti grow at different rates and the seal of the graft becomes broken. A new graft can be cut on each of the surfaces of the root stock and the scion and the Moon Cactus rejuvenated.
Gymnocalycium is a low growing rounded cactus found in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia, up to 500 metres[1500ft.] above sea level. Hylocereus probably originates in South America, but is a sprawling or climbing terrestrial, epiphytic cactus growing to 10 metres[ 30ft.] in height.

GORDON RAE
Moon Cactus A Plant Oddity Gordon Rae
In a well drained, cactus compost, as with most cacti, the Moon Cactus will survive considerable neglect. It is therefore a perfect plant for children! It is best placed in bright conditions but out of direct sunlight which tends to scorch the multi coloured top.
The history of the Moon Cactus goes back about 120 years. Hylocereus undatus, the rootstock, was described in 1918. Why it is the chosen rootstock for the Moon Cactus is unclear. Gymnocalycium was first described by a Czech botanist Alberto Fric in 1903. In the wild, the species is a dark purple in colour, but it had a reddish tinge to it and therein lies the story. There is still some doubt about its authenticity! A Japanese nurseryman, Eiji Watanabe, was said to have imported about 300 seeds of Gymnocalycium mihanovichii var. friedrichii from Germany in 1937. He germinated, and grew a collection of seedlings. Of these, two had a more reddish colour. Watanabe continued to grow and select plants and the mutations he produced gave red, yellow and orange cacti, but as all were without any green chlorophyll, they had to be grafted onto green rootstock for them to survive at all.
In 1948 the ‘Hibotan’ range of highly coloured grafted Moon Cacti was introduced.
Not unsurprisingly to some, they were not popular. Initially, they were also not popular when introduced to Europe and the USA during the 1960s. It was only in the 1980s that a mass market for the Moon Cactus developed.
Now there is a multi-million dollar market for these cacti, 70% or more of which are produced in South Korea. To think, a whole article for Grayshott Today has been sparked because our daughter in law’s mother gave me a Moon Cactus as a Christmas present!

There are two distinctive types of life assurance and both pay out lump sums on your death. Firstly, term insurance which provides cover over a predetermined period, or whole of life which continues until you die. When choosing, it’s important to consider whom you’re providing life assurance for, and why. How much is needed and for how long? Check also whether your employer provides a death in service benefit that reduces the need for extra cover.

Critical illness cover (CIC), meanwhile, pays out a lump sum if you contract any of a specified range of illnesses and conditions, ranging from heart complaints and cancers to rarer diseases. Typically, a policy will offer cover for 40 to 50 such conditions; but those specifically covered can vary considerably, making it hard to compare like with like.

Income protection, which provides a specified level of regular income if you become unable to work due to sickness or disability, is the most expensive choice as it’s most likely to be called upon. It’s also one of the most under-utilised options – typically because people believe themselves to be already covered by their employer in the case of prolonged ill health. This is, however, rarely the case.

When prioritising protection, individuals are more likely to need income protection than critical illness and more likely to need critical illness than life assurance. A survey by the Financial Conduct Authority in October 2017 revealed that just under one-third of the UK adult population has ‘low financial resilience to’ the risk of death, critical illness or longterm sickness.

There are price compromises available. The cover becomes cheaper, for example, if you are prepared to extend the period of time before the replacement income kicks in. Short-term income protection contracts that pay out for between two and four years offer another relatively affordable solution.

WHY IS THE SKY BLUE? WHO
Professor John Tyndall, local Hindhead resident and brilliant scientist, found the answer to the question. These days, however, his name is hardly ever mentioned.
Born in August 1820, John Tyndall was the son of the local police constable in County Carlow, Ireland. By the time of his death in 1893, he had found renown as a draftsman, surveyor, physics professor, mathematician, geologist, atmospheric scientist, public lecturer and a mountain climber. A man of many talents and interests.
After a basic education, he worked for the Ordnance Survey, both in Ireland and England, before moving on to the world of the up and coming railways, with his experience of surveying. From that, he moved into the realms of science, and he later spent three years at the University of Marburg in Germany, developing his skills in experimental science, working with the likes of Robert Bunsen (he of the burner) and Heinrick Magnus. He also became friends with the renowned physicist Michael Faraday, who was known for his research in electromagnetism and discovering several organic compounds. In addition, he also played a hugely significant part in Louis Pasteur ’s research on bacteria at the time.
In 1853 he was appointed professor of natural philosophy at the Royal Institution in London. Whilst there, he gave hundreds of lectures with demonstrations, on a wide variety of scientific subjects to audiences consisting of students, other scientists, and influential members of society, including Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s Consort.
He also developed a great interest, and skill, in mountaineering, and visited the Alps many times between 1857 and 1869. In 1861, together with two friends, he succeeded in making the first ascent of the Weisshorn. The next year he only narrowly failed to make the first known ascent of the Matterhorn, not achieved for several years afterwards.

WORKED IT OUT?
Why is the sky blue ? Who worked it out ?
Why is the sky blue ? Who worked it out ?
WHY IS THE SKY BLUE? WHO WORKED IT OUT?
Whilst in the Alps, he became very interested in the movement of glaciers, and this led him towards studying the heating effect of sunlight, noting that gases including carbon dioxide and water vapour can absorb heat. He realised that the atmosphere acted as an insulator, but no one then knew the explanation for what we now call the Greenhouse Effect the phenomena of gases in the atmosphere trapping heat. He wrote “The atmosphere admits of the entrance of solar heat, but checks its exit, and the result is a tendency to accumulate heat at the surface of the planet ”. So, even in the middle of the Victorian age, Tyndall made us aware of the concept of global warming.
In 1883, he and his Wife Louisa built themselves a large house at Hindhead, where he said that “the Surrey Heathland air is as pure as that in the Alps”. He positioned the house just off the crest of Hindhead Ridge, with far reaching views over the Punch Bowl, as well as the Downs to the South. He loved the remoteness and tranquillity of the area, but it was almost inevitable that his comments were to draw the interest of others to build houses in the area, and also to encourage hordes of day trippers, catching the trains out from London. This was to be followed by all the paraphernalia of tea shops, guest houses and the like. It was not entirely his fault, of course railway commuting and the enclosure of commons for private development were already in motion, so the urbanisation of this once open heathland was inevitable at some point.
At one stage, he found workman building a house immediately outside his boundary, and within a few weeks his view across to the Downs was obscured by a suburban villa. To shield the nuisance he built a huge hedge screen, 40 feet in height, imitating the contour of pine trees, and fringed with pine branches. As a good atmospheric scientist, however, he also equipped it with a lightning conductor. Despite protests from the locals, the hedge became a permanent feature of the landscape.
By this time, however, he was in poor health, and a semi invalid, suffering, amongst other things, from insomnia and bad digestion. He was tragically to meet an untimely end. One night in 1893 Louisa, intending to give him his night time drink of magnesia, sadly gave him an overdose of chloral nitrate instead. He died in his Wife’s arms, gasping “Darling, you have killed your John”.

And what of the phenomena of the sky being blue? John Tyndall is remembered as the man who first provided a scientific explanation. This discovery, known as the Tyndall Effect , proved that the sky’s colour results from the scattering of the suns’ rays by molecules and dust in the atmosphere in such a way as to defract certain aspects of the spectrum, so causing a particular colour visible to the eye.

Today, this pre eminent scientist, born just over 200 years ago, is not as well known as he deserves. This is despite the existence of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, the Tyndall National Institute as well as the Pic Tyndall summit on the Matterhorn in the Alps; there are even several Mount Tyndalls and Tyndall glaciers. There is a Tyndall crater on the Moon; there is even a Tyndall Crater on Mars.

Cold nose against his hand
The boy reaches to his friend, a reassuring touch
His love for this, his donkey really means so much Walking slowly down a valley
The donkey leads the way
The little boy is blind you see, with not a lot to say Further and further, in the dead of night
They come across a stable, a very welcome sight
Inside are others, standing all around Slight movement of some cattle, a very gentle sound
The donkey pushes the boy inside toward a glowing light Only a baby crying gently, disturbs the peaceful night

A CHRISTMAS TALE by Colin Mellor

A CARD FROM BOB AND SANDRA
A Card from Bob and Sandra John Frankcom
We receive a Christmas card from Bob and Sandra every year which is very nice of them since we don’t send them one. This is not a lack of seasonal goodwill on our part but we simply do not know who they are! Of course, the card is not addressed to us but to John and Kate, the previous owners of the property, who moved out 14 years ago. So what ’s going on? Surely there can have been no other communication between the parties for one side not to know that the other had moved? Do John and Kate still send a card to Bob and Sandra even though they do not get one in return? Then again are John and Kate still ALIVE? (our junk mail reveals that there is one cruise company that, like Bob and Sandra, optimistically believes they are).
The habit of sending Christmas cards to friends and family still seems to be part of the annual ritual and survives in spite of rapidly increasing postal charges and the greater use of electronic messaging. I suspect that most of those card lists have been whittled down to more manageable and affordable limits although it might take some courage to ‘drop’ those where there is a lengthy history of reciprocity. It ’s always made easier, of course, if you get ‘dropped’ first which not only lets you off the hook but add a less than seasonal comment about, for example, her hysterical laugh or his smoking habit. Setting a rule might help so for example if you haven ’t actually had any other contact in 10, 20 or 30 years and then enforce a cut -off point. The trouble with that approach is that there are people who you haven’t seen in years who you would like to see again and, however unlikely, it might just be next year!
Of Bob and Sandra we know nothing since their greetings are only accompanied by their names. Unlike many of the cards we receive there is no additional information. Most of those who we haven’t seen for some time usually either add notes to their cards or include a separate sheet with updates on their lives over the past year. Fortunately, these do not fall into the categories compiled by the late Simon Hoggart, journalist and broadcaster. In “The Cat that Could Open the Fridge ” he brought together some of the most humorous and risible examples of self -regard conveyed in Christmas ‘round robins’. These range from lengthy lists of academic successes to all forms of medical ailments with graphic details. I suppose we can only be grateful that Bob and Sandra do not send something similar with their card that we feel obliged to read. Not knowing more about them suits us fine!
So let me wish a very Happy Christmas and a Healthy New Year to all “Grayshott Today ” readers and to Bob and Sandra as well as all senders of unacknowledged cards this festive season.

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS ART COMPETITION
s Christmas Art Competition
Take a look at the beautiful artwork on the front cover of this latest edition. It’s wonderful, isn’t it The artist is Amélie, age 9 and the winner of our Children’s Christmas Art Competition.
As part of our exciting programme of festive events for Grayshott at Christmas, we asked our community of children to show us ‘What is Christmas’ through the medium of art. Every entry was heart-warming, different but most of all full of Christmas spirit.
Thankfully, the task of who should win the prize, of their artwork on the cover and more excitingly the person who got to press the button that illuminated our village lights and tree, was down to Hampshire based children’s book illustrator Denise Hughes. What a tricky decision our judge had. Just as well, Denise, who loves creating and doodling, jumped at the chance to choose our winner for us.
Denise exclaimed: “What a joy it was to look through the artwork. The entries were beautifully created and all the artists have really captured the spirit of Christmas. These young artists should be very proud of their work. It is great to know that we have so many future illustrators and artists living in Hampshire!
As you can imagine it was very difficult to pick a winner because the standard of work was very high. I was particularly struck by Amélie’s beautiful drawing of a "Snow Bird"; the uniqueness of this piece of work and the imagination that had gone into it. I loved Amelie's idea that The Snow Bird represents the joys of coming together at Christmas.
Congratulations to Amelie, a very deserving and talented winner.”
Thank you Denise. We think you’ll agree, Denise picked a magical winner. If you’d like to see some of our other budding artists' entries then take a look at Warren Powell Richards window display.

THE ARTS SOCIETY GRAYSHOTT
The Arts Society Grayshott
In November, writer, journalist and broadcaster Sarah Dunant gave the most interesting and exciting lecture on The Borgias: The Most Infamous Family in History? Sarah has lectured around the world and is a renowned English writer having written thirteen novels, her last five being set in Renaissance Italy.
Sarah spoke about the election of Rodrigues Borgias as pope, probably corruptly, in 1492 and taking the name Alexander VI. He was one of the most powerful, corrupt and wealthy men in Europe, and was head of the most notorious dynasty during the 15th and early 16th Centuries. Alexander is considered one of the most controversial of the Renaissance popes, partly because he acknowledged fathering several children by his mistresses and used his position to advance his sons and daughters, mainly Cesare and Lucrezia. Cesare was extremely driven and at the age of 18 became a soldier. 13 year old Lucrezia was used as a pawn on a chessboard of power through marriage.
Having researched the Borgias extensively, Sarah has become a passionate advocate for greater historical accuracy. She likened some of the stories heard about the family to modern day fake news. Lucrezia has been painted as one of the most infamous women in history whereas by the time she was twenty three she had been married off three times, each time to advance her father ’s power. The murder she is accused of was almost certainly engineered by him. When she died she was actually a much loved Countess.
Sarah also talked about Alexander VI as patron of some of the most wonderful art. Before Michelangelo, the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican City was rich in Renaissance art with the walls painted by several leading artists of the late 15th Century depicting stories of Moses and Jesus, and with tapestries to cover the lower part of the walls.
Sarah’s lecture was thoroughly enjoyed by over 100 people.
On Thursday 1st December at 2pm we welcome Christopher Bradley to give his talk: ‘Who is Santa Claus? Art from St Nicholas to Father Christmas’ For more information about this or any of our events, please go to www.theartssocietygrayshott.org or phone Kathy on 01428 723565

GRAYSHOTT JAZZ CLUB
GRAYSHOTT JAZZ CLUB
Last night we were treated to some scintillating jazz. It was a regular club night with our superb resident band comprising intrepid leader, banjo player and vocalist, Bill Guyford, Andy on Cornet, Tim on Clarinet, Dave on Double Bass and Blues Guitar and Graham on drums/ percussion.
The music was an eclectic mix of familiar numbers and some new material. The atmosphere was buzzing and it was good to see most seats taken.
However … overshadowing all of that came the highlight of the evening! We had an exceptional GUEST appearance by a young man in the shape of Faron Doel. Faron is a 14 year old musician whose expertise far exceeds his tender years. Amongst other instruments, he plays a tenor sax with so much maturity and deftness of touch that if one closed ones eyes it would seem that he was a seasoned professional, rather than a young man who is beginning his musical journey.
Faron is the son of our own Dave Doel, who is Double Bass player of the resident band. Under Dave ’s guidance and tutelage, his son has learned some complex skills on an instrument which is not easy to master. His rendition of “When the Saints Go Marching In ” as an opener to his set, had the whole audience stamping feet and clapping loudly. He was very comfortable playing with the whole band and not at all phased by the accompaniment of seasoned professionals around him.
He was then joined by his proud dad to launch into a raw Blues number with Dave on a mean blues guitar and Faron on Sax. Faron never missed a beat, even when Dave burst into his unique vocal rendition! He handled Sax solos without flinching on both the numbers he played, in itself a very daunting experience in one so young.
Faron recently joined his father’s band, The Doel Brothers, at a gig at The Riot Festival at Camber Sands, East Sussex. He will also be in the line up again, appearing with the band at Hemsby Rock n Roll Festival in Norfolk. Watch out for this young man who has a great future in the offing as he continues to master the instruments his dad introduces him to, going forward.
