Thought for the month - Rev. Jeremy Haswell Dear Grayshott, Change is all around us, the national uncertainty continues, but with new leadership and a different political stance. Last Night of the Proms is on us, our schools face a new academic year, children are going to school for the first time, new classes and new challenges. Perhaps the deals on new stationery in the shops brings back a feeling we know from our own school years. For some, they are off to University with the challenges of living independently, and for some the autumn feels daunting, facing loneliness as the nights draw in.

At St Luke’s, in our recent Sunday services, we have been thinking about what spiritual maturity looks like, and how to grow our faith.

Faith is what we employ when we act on the basis of trust. What we trust, shapes what we do, we all construct a framework of values by which we measure life.

In life, to achieve things it is useful to set goals, but sometimes we don’t act. A recent Radio 4 ‘All in the Mind’, about ‘Procrastination’, exploring how it can be overcome, said one reason for not doing things is a fear of failure. This comes from a view that we have to be a success at everything. A results-based education leads to setting visible ‘goals of achievement’ we can tick off, 8 A*’s, a first class degree, financial success, etc.. Setting ‘goals of character’ lead to the growth of inner, secret qualities that lead to better relationships, and faithfulness that spreads joy in the community.

My reading of Jesus in his teaching, is that he is always interested in the motives of the heart. The value of things we do is measured by the standard of love. Charity is the old word for self-giving generous, patient and kind love. Speaking to head teachers, this is the gold standard, equipping character in children. It is this that builds our community.

In this new season there are many requests for volunteers, in the Square Events, Scouts, Donnec Mews, Meals on Wheels, and more.

There are those who need help practically, financially, and emotionally.

Let us review how we can make a difference, and share our resources to encourage the next generation, and those who need a helping hand.

Do come and join us on our journey of discovery and worship.

THOUGHT forParish the MONTH Grayshott Council COMMUNITY EVENTS INTRODUCING ‘GRAYSHOTT TODAY’ Grayshott’s new playground A new playground has been provided by CALA Homes as part of the Applegarth Vale development. The playground is open and ready for all in Grayshott to enjoy. When the development is finished the Parish Council will be taking on its management to ensure it can continue to be a valued village asset. The play equipment is exceptionally good quality and we hope the children in the village will explore it this Autumn.

Projects completed using the funds from the Neighbourhood Portion of Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) In November 2018 we invited community organisations to suggest projects that they would like to put forward to be considered for funding from the Neighbourhood Portion of CIL. This money is held by the Parish Council for the provision, improvement, replacement, operation or maintenance of infrastructure. Double Ordination On June 30th two well loved Grayshott characters were both ordained. Patrick Webb [Patch] our former youth worker at Bath and Wells

Cathedral and Mark Thomas at Guilford Cathedral. Patch goes on to work as assistant curate at Bleadon and Bornville and Mark to be Deacon at Wisley and Purford. We wish them both well they will be missed.

Gordon Rae :50 Shades of Green The notice at the entrance read, “Welcome to our garden, 50 shades of green”.

The message meant what it said. Our garden is predominantly green. That may sound rather dull and boring, until you ask yourself the question “What is the colour green?” Is it light green, dark green, bright green or dull green? Is it blue green or grey green, plain coloured or variegated? Is it masked by red or yellow or Osmunda regalis orange? In short, the reason the colour green cannot be reliably defined is because of the range of “greens” which exist, the variations in colour, combined with the endless variations in shape, and texture of leaves, there are many more than “50 shades of green” available to Mr and Mrs [ and Ms] Gardener!

Another member of Grayshott Gardeners, after the hidden gardens weekend in May 2017, told me that for years they had been chasing a “ constantly changing palette of colour in their garden throughout the year”, but all they had to do really was to concentrate on variations of green to create a year long variety of change. As every plant we are likely to grow has some degree of greenness, even though it is masked in leaves from white to near black, is there a single group of garden plants which can be singled out as special? I believe there is, it is the “ferns”.

Some years ago, my latent OCD [ Obsessive Compulsive Disorder] kicked in and I started collecting ferns. Boring? Not at all, there are now over one hundred different ferns growing in our garden displaying a wide range of size, colour shape and texture, to suit a wide range of situations and conditions. There is room in any garden for a fern or two and each one will earn its keep and add interest during [ for the deciduous ferns] or throughout [ for the evergreen ones] the year. Ferns are an interesting group of plants.

YOUTH continued PAGE The first fossil remains of ferns appeared about 350 million years ago in the Carboniferous / Devonian period. Ferns were one of the plants which contributed to the mix of vegetation which ultimately became our coal. Ferns do not have flowers or seeds.

They produce spores which pass through a series of changes to develop into the ferns as we know them.

There are over 10,000 species of ferns recorded worldwide, so they have been very successful for a very long time. As with other Woodwardia unigemmata garden plants, ferns need to be planted in the right place. They will tolerate acid soils and shade, so a very useful group of plants for Grayshott and its surrounds. Of the wide choice available to us, may I suggest a “starter for 10” going from large to small? For cultivation details of any or all of them, consult “Mr Google” who can provide far more information than I am able to do here.

My top selection, going from large to small would run something like this: Large Matteuccia orientalis [ Pentarhizidum orientale] Oriental Ostrich Fern Woodwardia unigemmata – Jewelled Chain Fern Osmunda regalis- Royal Fern [ likes damper conditions] Medium Matteuccia struthiopteris – Ostrich Fern Dryopteris erythrosora Japanese Shield Fern Asplenium scolopendrium Hart’s Tongue Fern Small athyrium nipporicum Japanese Painted Fern Adiantum venustum Himalayan Maiden Hair Gymnocarpium dryopteris Oak Fern I hope that a few of these apparently boring, flowerless, seedless plants which appear to offer little more than “fifty shades of Green” will provide you with as much pleasure as they have provided me over the year 9

Grayshott Gardeners Wednesday 11th September Club Night Lecture We are delighted to welcome Harry Baldwin to the club this month and look forward to his talk on Kew Gardens We all love Kew and this is our opportunity to have a look behind the scenes.

Harry Baldwin, a Kew Diploma Student, is enthusiastic about anything plant related and a lover of all plant diversity. His particular love of trees took him to the coniferous, biodiverse hotspots along the west coast of America in 2017 and in 2018 he attended the 9th International Oak Society Conference at UC Davis Arboretum California.

Harry is now the Taxonomist of the Arboretum, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and a member of the IUCN/SSC Global Tree Specialist Group.

Doors open at 7.30 for the talk to start at 8pm.

Grayshott Gardening Club Summer Show No matter what type of weather - hot, cold, wet or dry the gardeners of Grayshott once again managed to produce a wonderful display of fruit, flowers, vegetables and home produce at the annual Summer Show in July.

One of the most contested classes was for the Mike Hallt Trophy. Earlier in the year members were given three potatoes to take away and grow and to bring back three of their best harvest for the show. It was great to see such a range - our Patron, Gordon Rae didn’t do so well but still entered showing that it is not the winning but the taking part that is so important. All members are encouraged to enter and although we all like to win it is great to be just a part of this spectacular village event.

John Suchet to Host Grayshott Concert John Suchet, the presenter of Classic

FM’s flagship weekday-morning programme, will host Grayshott Concerts next event at St Luke’s Church, Grayshott on Friday 13th September 2019.

The upcoming concert is the latest in the Grayshott Concert series, founded in 2004. Mr Suchet will explore and then John Suchet introduce the works to be performed. He will also be available after the concert to sign copies of his books, a selection of which will be on sale on the night.

The programme includes Tchaikovsky’s major work for cello - Variations on a Rococo Theme – to be performed by soloist Jamal Aliyev. Mr Aliyev, 26, is a ‘BBC Introducing Classical Artist’ and winner of numerous international awards. A new piece especially composed by Sir Karl Jenkins CBE for Mr Aliyev to perform will also be premiered at the concert. Sir Karl (the most popular living composer in Classic FM’s ‘Ultimate Hall of Fame’) will be conducting Jamal’s performance of Appassionata accompanied by the London Mozart Players.

Other works to be performed at the concert include Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony, Mendelssohn’s popular Overture to a Midsummer Night’s Dream together with one of Mozart’s best-loved Symphonies, No.35, ‘The Haffner’.

Before joining Classic FM, John was best known as one of the country’s most popular television newsreaders and newscasters. With a lifelong passion for classical music, he is an acknowledged expert and writer on major composers including Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.

An Inspirational Grayshott Story The story begins with one woman’s love for her son. In 1949, at the age of 37, Elizabeth FitzRoy adopted a boy named Michael who was born with Downs Syndrome. Elizabeth quickly learnt that children and adults with learning disabilities lived very isolated lives and were beset with problems and prejudice. She wanted more for her son and began the fight for better care and equality.

In 1962 Elizabeth purchased her first care home, Donec in Grayshott, and began implementing her vision of care. FitzRoy now has services in over 59 locations and supports over 529 individuals to live full, happy lives.

We are all very proud to continue her legacy of individualised care to promote independence, choice and opportunity in a loving family environment.

In 2011 Donec was rebuilt to create 3 smaller, more modern houses and became Donec Mews.

This summer Donec Mews staff have made a supreme effort to enhance the quality of life for the people we support. Mini holidays, Alpaca walking and a visit from small farm animals have been added to the schedule of discos, Sailability, BBQ’s and theatre trips.

All these activities are brilliant but do not get over the need to provide stimulation and support daily. To accomplish this, we need to have a greater presence in the local community using existing facilities and raising awareness regarding the needs of individuals different abilities.

For this to happen we need to raise money and to recruit more staff to ensure the safety and success of new experiences as well as maintaining the correct staff to resident ratio at the home.

We are looking to recruit more staff at Donec Mews (no experience necessary) and welcome anyone who would like to volunteer. Please get in touch if you have a skill to offer, have time spare to interact with the people we support, are a group who may be able to help us fundraise or would like to join our staff team.

Grayshott Scouts Gear Up For Another Exciting Year 1st Grayshott Scout Group have been at the heart of the village for more than 100 years, helping the young people of Grayshott develop skills for life – self confidence, teamwork, resourcefulness, and pride in their community – through practical activities, adventure, and most of all fun.

Like many such organisations, the group depends on the volunteers that offer their time and abilities, and this year we welcome several new faces to the leadership team and the committee that supports them, bringing fresh motivation and ideas. During the summer break, Tony Sparks Group we're as busy as ever, planning our activities for scout Leader of 1st the year ahead and smartening up our scout hut Grayshott Scouts. and outdoor spaces. One of our top priorities is to restart our Scout section for 10½-14 year olds which has suffered in recent years from a lack of numbers and leaders, despite our Beaver (6-8 years) and Cubs (8-10½ years) sections thriving. We're also looking forward to the 2020 Fire & Ice winter camp (we don't let the cold hold us back - with the right preparation, we can create a unique and fun outdoor experience), and Scoutabout - the triennial festival of scouting which brings together some 5,000 Scouts and Guides from Surrey to participate in more than 200 activities such as canoeing, archery, and rock climbing.

Get involved It's not just for kids - our adult helpers get just as much out of their involvement with Grayshott Scouts, and there are many ways to join in the fun. We are always looking out for people to join us in a leadership or even 'occasional helper' capacity, and we also have a number of opportunities available on our committee - the team that works behind the scenes to support the leaders. In particular, we would like to talk to people who would enjoy helping us manage our building and equipment.

News from Acorn Christian Foundation Acorn Christian Foundation run regular events across the country equipping individuals and groups in ministry skills for the journey of Christian healing. Since handing over the keys to Whitehill Chase and operating remotely new relationships are being built with Dioceses, churches, individuals, and organisations. The way we deliver our training and how you can access resources is being developed for better accessibility and a further reach. Staff and volunteer training are scheduled in the diary so that we are delivering quality, consistent ministry skills training across the board. Lives are being touched and transformed. It seems like a new grace is upon us to carry on this ministry entrusted to us from the hands of Bishop Morris and Anne, through the life of the Holy Spirit.

You can join us for our regular service of healing and wholeness in Hindhead, a safe space for guests to be drawn by God into a deeper sense of his presence and grace. With a different blend of worship and liturgy, there is something accessible for all, whether contemplative or exuberant you will find the space and time to be led by the Holy Spirit.

We are excited to have added two monthly evening healing celebrations in Hindhead and Guildford for those who aren’t able to attend a daytime service.

Fresh Meals directly to Your Door Community Meals Services, or ‘meals on wheels’ as it is more commonly known, has been around since the London Blitz in WW2.

It was started by the Women's Volunteer Service for Civil Defence (WVS, later WRVS).

Despite the hazards and danger to themselves, these courageous women cooked and distributed hot meals to people who had been bombed out of their homes and therefore had no means to cook their own food. The service met a vital need and quickly spread across the UK becoming part of the survival fabric of war-torn battling Britain.

Today, it’s a service for the housebound or Chef at Haslewey those have difficulty getting to the shops. In fact, these hot meals are available to anyone who would like a break from the tiring monotony of cooking for themselves each day.

In Grayshott and surrounding areas, The Community Meals Service is available from the Haslewey Community Centre by Tesco’s store in Weyhill. There, staff prepare and cook lunchtime meals, using only wholesome fresh ingredients. The meals are then delivered by volunteer drivers, to the homes of its customers’ between the hours of midday to 2.00pm - piping hot and ready-to eat. There’s a wide choice of dishes available giving good variety each day. At the same time, there are some weekly favourites such as a roast choice on Thursdays and always a fish option on Fridays. Care is taken to ensure that they’re all well balanced and nutritious. Specialist diabetic and vegetarian options are also available.

The meals on wheels service can be used on a regular or short term basis -a minimum of three meals per week on whichever days suit the customers. Whilst the service is not available at weekends or Bank Holidays, two course frozen meals may be ordered. Value for money, a two course meal, main course and pudding costs just £6.50. And teatime snacks can be ordered too for £3.25.

Fresh Meals Directly to Your Door One senior Haslemere resident makes full use of the service. “When I was on leave from The Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), the women's branch of the British Army, I used to help my Mother deliver meals to blitz survivors in London’s East End. I never thought then that nearly eighty years later, I would be a recipient of meals from the same organisation. The food’s far better now than it was then and it saves me all the bother of getting shopping and the food preparation”.

The Community Meals Service would not exist without the vital role played by its volunteer delivery drivers. “We have a great mix of housewives, retired men and women of all ages including some even well into their eighties”, comments a member of the Haslewey meals service staff. “A delivery round doesn’t take long, an hour at the most, but the volunteers say it is so rewarding to see how much the service means to customers and how much the lunches are appreciated”. Often, a volunteer is the only person some of the more housebound customers meet during the day and so a delivery becomes an important highlight for them”.

The Community meals service is just one of the many activities at The Haslewey Community Centre. It was opened in 2003 to provide a much needed Community Centre for everyone around the area. Contrary to popular belief, the centre is not run by the local authority and does not receive any grants to help towards running costs. It is a centre for the community run by the community.

Grayshott Heritage

Opened on the 23rd. August 1899 the Fox and Pelican celebrates 120 years of trading this year.

During the 1890's the village started to expand rapidly and benefited greatly from those new to the district and appreciated their surroundings. The need for a village pub was recognised but for it not to be just an ordinary beer house.

In 1898 Alton brewer Gerald Hall purchased land now known as the village green with the intention of building a public house on the site .

This general idea did not go down well with prominent local residents who thought it necessary to forestall this ambition. As a result the Grayshott and District Refreshment Association was formed by leading residents including Mrs. Charlotte Lyndon, Rev. J.M.Jeakes (later first vicar of Grayshott ) and Sir Frederick Pollock with the intention to build a public house on adjacent land and to be run on reformed lines under the control of local people . Subsequently a total of 2500 ÂŁ1 shares were issued to some 68 shareholders. Even the Bishop of Winchester's blessing was given to the project.

At the licensing secessions in autumn 1898 the application made by Hall was refused and a full licence granted to the G &D. R.A. Ltd..

Mr. and Mrs. Nettleship generously gave the land and the cost of the building work was estimated to be ÂŁ2000. The establishment was to be run on the lines of offering tea, coffee, soft drinks , food and accommodation although alcohol was available it was top retail price and kept behind a curtain ! It was to be run by a salaried manager working on commission but not on that from the sale of alcohol.

The Fox and Pelican There was some initial problem in choosing a name but with the interest shown by the Bishop of Winchester , Corpus Christi College, Oxford and its foundation in the 16th. century by Bishop Fox of Winchester with the Pelican on the founder's device hence the 'The Fox and the Pelican' became the chosen name . Mrs. Winkworth gave the signboard designed and painted by well known Victorian artist Walter Crane R.A. possibly to be unique among signboards of an episcopal blessing. George Bernard Shaw donated a small library of books and purchased shares in the Association. Opened by Mrs. Randall Davidson , wife of the Bishop of Winchester it attracted comment in both the local and national press.

A palatable 'mild' was on offer at two and a half pence and bitter or stout at three pence a pint. Rooms were half a crown, breakfast one shilling and dinner two shillings.

Press reports seem to indicate that more alcohol was being sold than anticipated , a somewhat rocky road lay ahead for the Association , frequent changes in management did not help, a degree of drunkenness and one report quoted 'an unusual proportion of lawless spirits in its population' . Trading profits fluctuated but the whole venture was reasonably successful and in 1913 the management was transferred to the People's Refreshment House Association, much later in the 1950s Gales Brewery of Horndean took ownership and more recently Messrs Fullers have become the owners. The general appearance and facade of the building look and remain much the same as it has for the past 120 years.

The project was also known to be based on the 'Gothenburg Experiment'.

The original Walter Crane painted sign has survived, bought back by the village several years ago , restored and now on display ay Grayshott Pottery.

The 'Peoples Refreshment House Association' was a national organisation and had given support and advice to the original venture .

During its formative years there was considerable 'temperance ' controversy , a strong temperance liberal press and protagonists of extreme temperance . In a letter George Bernard Shaw to Mr. Ingram Whitaker expresses considerable concern that the F & P could be cited in the temperance controversy.
