DEAR GRAYSHOTT - JEREMY HASWELL Dear Grayshott - Jeremy Haswell

Dear Grayshott, This month we are preparing for a lot. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Thursday 2nd June to Sunday 5th June 2022 is just into next month, so look out for all the events being organised by the revived Party In Grayshott (PIG) Committee, and the Parish Council. Grayshott Concerts has a concert at the end of the month, and St Luke’s will also be hosting the Tilford Bach Festival early in June, due to building works at their usual home, All Saints’ Church, Tilford. I’m sure all who come will enjoy superb music, in the excellent acoustic, St Luke’s provides.

Everyone has been brought down to earth, by the brutal devastation of towns and cities in Ukraine and the huge loss of life which has shocked us all. We are planning to provide support for those seeking refuge here in our village and surroundings, linking with the Red Rose Café and others who are working for this.

I am personally grateful to have met a Ukrainian Pastor, and some Ukrainians here already, who want to help us. The problems processing visas means that it is taking time to settle people here. We will provide a meeting place for both Ukrainians and host-families for support, and information sharing. Pastor Andriy will also help us welcome people. As we pray for peace in Ukraine, I have invited him to lead services in Ukrainian for our guests. The challenge for us will be to truly meet the needs of those who have left husbands, fathers and brothers behind, simply to be safe, while their hearts are still in Ukraine. Let us continue to stand together with them. Please let us know if you are hosting, so we can coordinate and support you.

After Easter, the 26th May is Ascension in the Church calendar. Jesus rose from the dead, and after appearing to many, left to go to heaven. With Covid, then a war on the edge of Europe the atmosphere is changing. You may ask what Ascension has to say to you? I sense that many are looking for more than material things can provide: hope and meaning in the uncertainty. For those of us who believe, Ascension causes us to metaphorically ‘look up’ and seek God, when so much else is failing. Please join us at St Luke’s to look up, and seek God together, and get good at praying! Also, you can find us on YouTube.

GRAYSHOTT CONCERTS A MUSICAL LIFELINE

Grayshott Concerts a musical Lifeline

Now well into its 18th year, Grayshott Concerts has an unbroken record of sell-out concerts - almost 90 to date. For those who may not be familiar with the history of Grayshott’s very own classical music promoters, here’s a recap of how the organisation first came about, and what it continues to bring to our community.

The starting point for the entire concert series was the wedding of founders Peter and Vivien Harrison’s daughter at St Luke’s in 2003. They invited the Occam Singers to perform at the ceremony.

A short while later, when St Luke’s was in dire need of funding, the Harrisons had the great idea of inviting that same choir back for a ticketed event. The concert sold out, raising £3,500 for the church and people immediately showed interest in future events. And so Grayshott Concerts was born.

From just a couple of concerts a year in the early days, the registered charity regularly puts on five to six concerts per year, all of which are headlined by stars from the classical music world, and all of which sell out. Grayshott Concerts has an orchestra-inresidence in the London Mozart Players, one of the UK’s leading chamber orchestras as well as a fantastic patron in Sir Karl Jenkins (who ranks among the most-performed living composers in the world).

Past performers include Nicola Benedetti, Sebastian Comberti, Alison Balsom, The Sixteen Choir, Chloe Hanslip, Howard Shelley, Britten Sinfonia, local vocal group Excelsis (choir-in-residence) and many more. Such is the calibre of performers that have graced St Luke’s thanks to Grayshott Concerts, it was the venue for the world premiere of Karl Jenkins’ Miserere - Songs of Mercy and Redemption in November 2019, and violinist Tasmin Little’s penultimate public performances prior to her retirement in December 2020.

Despite the obvious challenges presented by restrictions on public gatherings imposed during national lockdowns in 2020 and 2021, Grayshott Concerts managed to put on a total of 15 concerts in full compliance with social-distancing requirements during that period - considerably more than had been originally planned! The ‘pandemic programme’ culminated in July 2021 with an entirely free concert akin to a mini Last Night of the Proms packed with well-known classics, attended by more than 180 key-workers.

Lt Commander David Balfour – Falklands Hero.

This month marks the 40th anniversary of the passing of Lieutenant Commander David Balfour, a Grayshott man who died in May 1982, during the Falklands conflict.

David was born on July 9th 1944, the second son of Rear Admiral and Mrs. G I Balfour. It is said that he was a distant relative of Robert Louis Stevenson, the Victorian novelist of “Treasure Island” fame. Educated at Radley School, he was a keen oarsman, and was a member of the winning eight of the Princess Elizabeth Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta in 1962.

Lt Commander David Balfour – Falklands Hero.

The Navy was a natural destiny for him, so later, David moved onto the Britannia Royal Naval College. He chose to specialise as a Supply and Secretariat Officer, and passed out of Dartmouth three years later. Thereafter a fine selection of sea appointments followed, including such ships as HMS LONDON, BRIGHTON and CHICHESTER. In 1974 he attended the Royal Navy Staff College, and then worked inside the Ministry of Defence as Assistant Secretary to the Vice Chief of Navy Staff.

This prestigious appointment was followed in 1977 by a move to the teaching staff of the Greenwich Lieutenant’s Course, where he remained until 1980. He then became Supply Officer on HMS SHEFFIELD. Throughout this period he continued to row for the Royal Navy, as well as taking an increasing role in the sport’s administration.

In August 1975, David married Rosalind, a Barts nurse – the wedding took place at St. Bartholomew’s, the great Priory Church in London, a very happy union blessed three years later with the arrival of a daughter, Julia, in May 1978.

On April 2nd 1982, military forces of Argentina commenced an invasion of the Falkland Islands, a British Dependent Territory in the South Atlantic, followed by the invasion of South Georgia the following day. As a result, the British Government dispatched a naval task force to engage the Argentine Navy and Air Force before making an amphibious assault on the islands, and one of the ships of the Task Force was HMS SHEFFIELD. Commissioned in February 1975, SHEFFIELD was a Type 42 guided missile destroyer with a total complement of 281 crew members, nicknamed the “Shiny Sheff” by her crew. Departing for the South Atlantic on 10th April 1982, the ship sailed south and joined other vessels of the Task Force before commencing operations in the Total Exclusion Zone around the Falklands on May 1st.

BACHBach COMES TO ST LUKE’S Comes to St Luke’s The renowned Tilford Bach Festival is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. Sadly the festival cannot be held in Tilford church this year as repairs are urgently needed to the ceiling.

We are delighted that St Luke’s church has stepped into the breach and will be holding the three day event in June.

The festival starts at 7.30pm on Friday 10th June with a concert of virtuoso concertos played by the London Handel Players and featuring a former Musical Director of TBF, Laurence Cummings on the harpsichord. The programme consists of six concertos, four by J.S. Bach, one by Leclair and one by Vivaldi.

At 4pm on Saturday 11th June there will be a rare opportunity to hear the Bach St. Matthew Passion performed with just 9 singers, allowing the work to be heard with the sonorities the composer had in mind. Joanne Lunn, Daniel Taylor, Charles Daniels (Evangelist) and Edward Grint (Jesus) lead an international cast of singers with the London Handel Orchestra directed by the TBF Musical Director, Adrian Butterfield.

The festival closes on Sunday June 12th at 3pm with an exciting and innovative programme from Ensemble Augelletti, featuring music associated with Anna Amalia, Princess of Prussia (17231787). The programme includes music composed by Anna Amalia herself and also highlights music from her personal library by J.S. Bach, Corelli, Handel and C.P.E. Bach.

LADY’S SLIPPERS AND OTHER TREASURES Lady’s Slippers and Other Treasures

No longer is it the case.

No longer are they the preserve of just the rich and famous, the great and the good. Orchids are now available to everyone, not only as indoor house plants, but also as hardy orchids which will grow outside in a Grayshott garden.

The Asteraceae[ Daisies] and the Orchidaceae are the largest two plant families on the planet.

There are 800-900 different genera of orchids and nearly 30,000 different species. Orchids account for nearly 10% of all identified plants on earth.

So, orchids are not so rare, but Cypripedium Lady’s Slipper they are old, probably around 100 million years old.

May I please leave you to look up the derivation of their name from the Greek ‘orkhis’?

About 90% of orchids are tropical, but they are found on every continent except Antarctica and will be growing in almost any habitat other than ice fields.

Orchids have been grown and coveted for centuries, particularly by the Chinese. Confucius himself grew them, wrote about them and composed music for them.

Explorers such as Columbus and Cortez in the late 15th and early 16th centuries introduced orchids from the Americas into Europe.

However, it was Victorians, through well healed fanatics, who fanned the flames of frenzy for orchids. They financed intrepid plant hunters to seek out new ones for growing and breeding in their hothouses and conservatories. The crazy prices paid for orchids were as high as those paid in the 1500s for tulip bulbs during ‘Tulipmanina’.

LADY’S SLIPPERS AND OTHER TREASURES Lady’s Slippers and Other Treasures In 1889, the RHS founded the Orchid Committee. Now, breeding and selling orchids is a multi-million pound business world wide, using advanced techniques such as tissue culture to raise orchids at an affordable price. This large scale commercialisation has bought the price of these exotics within the reach of us all.

Historically, tropical orchids have been grown in greenhouses and conservatories, but there are hardy orchids which can and do grow in a Grayshott garden. They are herbaceous, deciduous perennials which in the wild are woodland, shade loving species, better kept out of direct sunlight, so our patch of north facing, shady woodland garden has proved to be ideal.

There are about half a dozen hardy orchids which would grow in Grayshott, but to date we have attempted only three, Pleione, Dactylorhiza and Cypripedium [Lady’s Slipper Orchid].

Each one favours a well drained, moist soil which does not dry out in the summer or become waterlogged or frozen in the winter.

Slippers and OTHER Other Treasures LADY’S Lady’s SLIPPERS AND TREASURES In our garden they are planted with their feet in the shade and their heads in dappled sunlight. The roots are protected by a mulch each winter. That said, the Plenoines possibly suffered from the heavy frosts of the 2020 and did not flower well in 2021.

The Pleione, a native of Taiwan and SE China has dark, globose pseudobulbs and solitary, tubular, dark rose pink flowers, the mouth of which is mottled with attractive, reddish brown spots. It is the first to flower in March/April.

Dactylorhiza foliosa the Madeira Orchid, will tolerate wetter conditions. It has a tuberous root and now our two well established clumps produce 15-20 towers of pink/purple flowers in May/ June.

Cypripedium is the Lady’s Slipper Orchid with a distinctive, characteristic flower, shaped like a slipper or shoe. They are widely distributed across the northern hemisphere from Europe to Japan.

Judith has now planted several Cypripediums in our woodland that are becoming well established, producing ‘slippers’ of attractive yellow, dark red and pink to nearly white flowers in May and June.

Propagation is by division in the autumn, but we have not yet been brave enough to disturb and to risk our now established orchid treasures!

UKRAINE AND PSALM 31 Ukraine and Psalm 31 A Plea for strength in most extreme adversity. This psalm has become a basis for prayer in Ukraine. If one can read it carefully it does reflect the terrible scenes which we in our comfort see on our tv screens and which we can hardly comprehend as actually happening.

It is not possible to set out the whole psalm here but if you can find it and read it slowly the text does reflect the horrors being inflicted by man on man and the pain which is being felt by so many.

All I can do here is choose some verses which seem to apply to people undergoing the outrages taking place and to which there seems no end.

Verse one sets out the whole basis of the psalm. “In thee O Lord have I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion, deliver me in thy righteousness.”

Some of the following verses contain what can easily be interpreted as desperate pleas for help.

“Be thou my strong rock.” “Be my guide.” “Draw me out of the net that they have laid privily for me.” “Into thy hands I commend my spirit.” “Have mercy on me O Lord for I am in trouble.” “ For my life is waxen old with heaviness and my years with mourning.” “ I am clean forgotten, as a dead man out of mind.” “For I have heard the blasphemy of the multitude, and fear is on every side, while they conspire against me, and take their counsel to take away my life.”

To me the biblical style of language conveys so much more than our modern literary jargon.

The verses following in the psalm can so easily be drawn as parallels to what is happening to people. For instance, verse 20 is a cry for help. “Let the lying lips be put to silence: which cruelly and disdainfully and despitefully speak against the righteous.”

The remainder of the psalm, even though the first part is a desperate prayer for help, strength and aid, is full of praise and thanks for God’s love in times of trouble. The last two verses do so beautifully encapsulate all the hope Christians repose in God. “O love the Lord all ye his saints, for the Lord preserveth them that are faithful, and plenteously rewardeth the proud doer.”

MISMis ORorDIS Dis As part of our regular contact my son will often send a link via WhatsApp to an item of interest on Twitter (he spends more time on social media than I do but then perhaps you would expect that of his generation). Of course over the last two years a good many of these items have offered some information on the pandemic and much of it of a statistical nature trying to analyse available data. As a basis for navigating our way safely through the management of the virus we have relied on the information coming to us from various sources to be accurate and clear. In fact we’ve probably spent as much time on discussing the validity of the sources of the information as we have on the analysis and argument itself.

Unfortunately, as we’ve found with social media, there is a lot of misinformation, that is information which is just wrong and has been less than helpful when dealing with a public health crisis. Even less helpful is the prevalence of disinformation, that is false information which has a malign influence and used against people and the public good. Sorting out which is which is often not straightforward and in case of the vaccination programme there were and perhaps still are examples of both. In the end it can come down to whom we trust most and for many that is friends and family rather than others like public authorities. When younger generations rely on social media for most of their news, local and national, they are more vulnerable to both mis- and disinformation. Unlike their seniors they tend not to access more established news reporting on television, radio, etc. and are less aware of the importance of verifiable sources of information.

Those of us who remain users of all forms of news media are increasingly concerned with reporting standards and are demanding greater regulation of social media especially. The highest standards of objective and factual news reporting must apply across all news media and, in spite of some charges of bias, our public service broadcasting remains of that order. There is no better example of this than in the news reporting of events in Ukraine and the value to us of providing real time information on which we can rely including the caveats where further verification is needed. It protects us from the suppression of a reality which we are obliged to face and the tyranny of those who choose to present an alternative narrative.

TEMPERANCE Temperance comes to COMES GrayshottTO !!

GRAYSHOTT!!

On Thursday evening in the middle of a really cold spell the temperature at Grayshott Social Club was significantly lifted by the arrival of the Legendary Jazz Band that is The Temperance Seven. This intrepid band of Troubadours has been strutting its stuff to adoring fans around the world, well maybe just around corner, since 1955 when they were originally formed by students at the Royal College of Art. Over the years the line up has changed, largely due to the ravages of time and natural wastage. However, the passion and musical expertise has not changed one jot. Neither has the exuberance, humour and sense of Joie de Vivre that the current band brings to every performance it gives.

We were also treated to a rendition by Mike Deighan of two famous numbers by the legendary singer and Ukulele performer George Formby. Mike, on finger picked five string Banjo, was accompanied

by Willy Entwistle on violin, The Temps clarinetist and alto sax player, when they belted out In a Little Wigan Garden. They also performed Leaning on a Lamp Post when Mike switched to his plectrum banjo and to which the whole audience joined in with rousing choruses! Other notable solos were performed by Willie Entwistle, again, giving us his rendition of The Hornpipe on a penny whistle, how does he do that ?!! As well our very own Bill Gyford who belted out Alexanders Ragtime Band accompanied by the whole ensemble to thunderous applause.

The 100 or so of us lucky enough to get tickets were treated to an evening of superb syncopation with classic numbers including : You’re Driving Me Crazy, Pasadena, Hard Hearted Hannah, Charleston and Chilli Bom Bom amongst many other classic Jazz standards. The superb musicianship shone through with many breath-taking solos from each of the band members. Captain Christopher Buckley the intrepid band leader and vocalist, faithfully mimicking the unique sound of the early Temps, blasting out one number after another, taking those of us old enough to remember back to times gone by, but never forgotten.



Once again our lovely preschool achieved a fantastic OUTSTANDING rating in all areas on 9th March 2022. The inspector commented: “children thrive and flourish in the care of the nurturing staff', and she was impressed by the planning of an “an exemplary curriculum” with “children put at the heart of everything they do.” It was also commented that the staff clearly had a deep understanding of children’s needs, which has always been our driving force and will continue to inspire us to do the very best for the infants in our care.

Manager Carol Houghton said: “we are all thrilled that the inspector could see what a special place PK Preschool continues to be”. The vision and legacy of our founder, the late Kay Houlin who opened the preschool in 1987, shines on as brightly as ever.

THE ARTS SOCIETY GRAYSHOTT The Arts Society Grayshott In April members of the Arts Society Grayshott were treated to a fascinating talk by expert Imogen Corrigan about the Bayeux Tapestry.

At nearly 70 metres long and 50 centimetres tall the Bayeux Tapestry was made in seven sections which were eventually attached to each other. The Pictures were woven from only 10 different colours of ‘wool’ on linen and include no fancy stitching, the quality of the workmanship varying from section to section. The tapestry has not always been stored well, it was rolled up - possibly for hundreds of years and was nearly cut up during the French Revolution. Nonetheless it has survived and remains as vibrant today as it did 900 years ago.

Not just a narrative of the most famous battle in English history, the tapestry also depicts the events leading up to it. The images tell of the struggle for power and the claims to the throne of England, eventually leading to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, led

by William Duke of Normandy challenging Harold II, King of England and culminating in the Battle of Hastings.

The tapestry itself is thought to date to the 11th century, within a few years after the battle. Whilst it tells the story from the point of view of the conquering Normans it is now widely accepted that it was embroidered in England. Imogen showed evidence to support this theory including details of items which were almost certainly made in England at that time. Interestingly, the last scene where the English turn in flight, was added in 1814. This could be seen as further evidence of the original workmanship being English – the English fleeing was not something to celebrate so soon after the battle and hence it was omitted when the tapestry was originally made.

During the talk many of the scenes were examined detail and the audience explored what can be learned from this turning point in history. It is a moral story showing that good cannot come to those who break their word. It is a story of Kings, chivalry and ambition.

Intriguingly many crucial events are omitted and we can only speculate as to why.

AMESBURY FESTIVAL AmesuryARTS Arts Festival Amesbury Arts Festival is a 5 day event taking place on 23rd – 27th May. It has a simple aim: to inspire local young people to develop a passion for the Arts through unique and stimulating experiences in Music, Dance, Drama and Visual Arts.

Visual arts workshops include sessions with a professional graffiti artist, ceramics and pottery painting. One day is dedicated to musical theatre where young people will perform alongside members of the cast of Mary Poppins. There is also a day dedicated to dance, covering genres from contemporary to Hip Hop. The Arts Festival culture is inclusive, not selective or based on talent, and every activity aims to be fun. We want every participant to feel comfortable standing on stage, singing, dancing, acting and ultimately, speaking up. A big part of making the festival a success is understanding the vulnerability that young people can feel. The sessions are designed to support them and respect how they are feeling… working through any reservations and vulnerabilities and then finding and sharing each other’s joy on the other side. Bringing young people together from different local schools can heighten this journey. The experience enhances the confidence of all the participants.

Mark Reynolds, Director of Amesbury Arts Festival and Head of Performing Arts at the school said, “It’s great to have the Arts Festival back in Hindhead, audiences are somehow more excited and enjoying live performance even more richly post Covid. We have some outstanding professionals lined up to give their time and expertise to coach and develop the young people’s talents and interests. We are bringing together a large number of children from local schools to take part and it promises to be a wonderful experience for them”.
