Thought for the month - Rev. Jeremy Haswell Dear Grayshott, First I want to thank all our businesses who serve our community, and the enterprising individuals who invest time and finance in the many activities in the village.

Special thanks to the Grayshott Square Events planning group for the market stalls that met on May 11th, showing many of those groups.

I attended a funeral once and the in the eulogy the deceased was quoted as having said “If you want an interesting life, volunteer!” Sage words, a truth many of us in Grayshott have already discovered.

At St Luke’s we are celebrating two Ordinations to Anglican ministry, one of our previous Youth Worker, Patrick Webb, who left us two years ago, and on the same day Mark Potter, who has been working at St Luke’s part time, whilst training in London, who is leaving us. Many congratulations to them both on the 30th June.

In the Christian tradition, we speak of ‘calling’, the idea that God calls individuals to serve in the Church. Firstly this pre-supposes that God is there, secondly that God speaks, and thirdly that there is a plan for our lives. It will be no surprise to hear that I believe that all three are true.

It is an interesting statistic that many people even those who don’t profess any particular faith, will pray. Perhaps we don’t know if our prayers are heard, or if they will make any difference, but there is something in our human make-up that makes reaching out beyond ourselves a reasonable thing to do. Reason has less to do with it, than a deep-seated longing.

In my teens, I felt alone in the world. I was then invited to a Christian meeting, I went, and learned that there is a God who cares for me as a father, and listens to my prayers. I was longing for significance. His love, shown by Jesus, brought purpose and significance. I believe God is calling us all, and the greatest calling is into a relationship with him, primarily in conversation (prayer), but also into active service.

We have quiet, contemplative services (Night prayer: ‘Sung Compline’ 1st Sunday at 6pm) Traditional, Contemporary, and All Age Family services. Do take a risk and come and join us in our adventure. There is a seat for you here.

THOUGHT forParish the MONTH Grayshott Council COMMUNITY EVENTS INTRODUCING ‘GRAYSHOTT TODAY’ Parish Assembly Thank you to all residents that attended our Parish Assembly on 26th April. Once again the evening was well attended. There were three reports from the Parish Council covering the Chairman’s report, planning and conservation, and finance. These reports along with reports from our County and District Councillors and the minutes of the evening can be obtained from the parish council website. www.grayshott-pc.gov.uk/ meetings Open Sessions at Council Meetings Open sessions have been added to the start of all Parish Council meetings.

These open sessions are designed to make it easier for members of the public to raise any local matter for consideration or to ask the Parish Council a question. The subject does not need to appear on the agenda.

If the topic or question can be dealt with at the meeting it will be done so.

If the topic requires further consideration a reply will be made in writing following the meeting or it will be put on the agenda of a subsequent meeting. We hope residents will take advantage of this new initiative.

Village Gardens The Parish Council has appointed a gardener to work alongside our hard working volunteer gardeners. During the year the gardener will advise the Parish Council and volunteers on new planting schemes that will reduce the maintenance and update key areas. The gardener will also be able to assist with some of the more physically demanding aspects of garden maintenance.

Hogs Hares and Hounds Over the last two years Haslemere and its surrounding villages have attracted attention from near and far to see ‘Hogs’ and ‘Hares’ and this year ‘Hounds’ will hopefully do likewise.

Local organisations and businesses are supporting this Annual Community Arts project which displays these creatures on corners, balconies and roofs.

This year 3ft tall fibreglass ‘Hounds’ will be the attraction and will be displayed from May till September 2019 and then most will be sold at auction. Although not specifically intended as a ‘fundraising exercise’, over the Hog Trotting in Ever Decreasing Circles last two years over £80,000 has been raised for many charities in the area and nationally.

The idea was the brain child of Brian Howard who has been the driving force behind this now annual event. Details;www.haslemerehounds.co.uk

Phil Bates for the third year has painted an animal, in 2017 it was ‘Hog Trotting in Ever Decreasing Circles’, In 2018 ‘By Royal HAREappointment’ and this year ‘Spot The Hound’ all with rather quirky designs painted on! The designs follow Phil’s canvas artwork which can be considered "abstract" which simply put is a form of work which does not seek to represent the world around us nor does it represent recognizable objects. He normally works in acrylics using both brush and palette knife, the latter being his preferred choice having in the past been a modeller working in clay, plaster and other materials. Many of his paintings incorporate primary colours, textures, geometric shapes and pattern repeats, bringing abstraction together."

Hogs GRAYSHOTT , Hares and YOUTH Hounds PAGE Phil said: “I am pleased to be in the position of being a sponsor by purchasing the animals which then enables me to paint my design and pick a charity of my choosing, the last two years being Haslemere Museum which has enabled a donation of several hundreds of pounds being presented to the Museum which was from bids at auction. For 2019 I have nominated ‘The Prostate Project as my charity in part because I have had prostate cancer and I know many who have had it as well”.

The Prostate Project is a registered charity established in 1998 by prostate cancer patient Colin Stokes and his consultant urological surgeon, Mr John Davies. Their ambition is to give men a better chance of beating prostate cancer. In the past 20 years the charity has raised over £8 million and have helped the Royal Surrey County Hospital achieve ‘Centre of Excellence’ status in the treatment of prostate cancer. The project Spot the Hound by Phil Bates supports the Royal Surrey County Hospital, St Luke’s Cancer Centre and Frimley Park Hospital in their efforts to detect and treat prostate cancer.

They have provided equipment, specialist nursing staff and run an active patient support group. Details;www.prostate-project.org.uk Principal aims and objectives: • To raise awareness, particularly amongst men, of the existence of prostate cancer, its symptoms and its potential adverse effect • To encourage wider recognition of the symptoms of the disease and swifter action in seeking GP’s advice • To fund state of the art equipment and specialist staff to support Urologists in achieving early diagnosis and rapid treatment • To push forward the boundaries of knowledge about prostate cancer by initiating a world class programme of research • To help fund the building of a world-class model NHS Urology Centre at the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

Flower Vogue has moved After 30 years based in the centre of the village, Charlotte the proprietor for 15 years has moved Flower Vogue to a Studio Workshop in Beech Hanger End in Grayshott. Tara is still the full time member of staff so it's the same Flower Vogue team proudly providing Grayshott and the surrounding areas with beautiful flowers. We have 28 years of Floristry experience and passion for flowers between us!

The new studio stocks large variety of fresh flowers and a few flowering plants. Deliveries from our wholesalers are made most days of the week, so the service is similar to the one we provided in the shop. If we don't have exactly what our customer requires we can usually source the majority of flowers by the next day. Many of our customers like to leave it to us to make up something beautiful with the seasonal stock that we have delivered each day to get the freshest and most reasonably priced blooms.

Grayshott Gardeners Wednesday 12th June Club Night Lecture Julian Hight is an author, designer, photographer and musician.

His two books ‘Britain’s Tree Story’ and ‘World Tree story’ reflect his passion for trees, not only, their history but also the importance of trees in our modern society. Trees have always inspired him from an early age and filled him with awe and wonder and I, for one, am looking forward to hearing about some of our ancient trees. For example, the hollow oak in Sherwood forest with a girth of 10.5 metres, and another, equally large, in Lincolnshire, which had been pollarded over the years for firewood.

The 400-year-old Queen Elizabeth oak in Cowdray Park is so called, because the queen used to hunt there.

Romanian Apple Tart This recipe comes from Bianca Cadar who has lived in Grayshott for the last seven years. She comes from Romania and since 2013 has had her own business in the village, Grayshott Cleaners.

Bianca has lots of very appreciative and loyal customers who all speak highly of the quality and consistency of her cleaning service, but she loves cooking and offers this easy apple tart recipe.

Ingredients Base

Flour 290 g Butter 200 g Baking Powder 10 g Sugar 130 g Egg Yolks 3 Pinch of salt

Filling Cooking apples Butter 50 g

Topping Egg whites 3 Sugar 150 g Teaspoon of lemon juice Pinch of salt

Directions To make the base, mix together butter, flour, baking powder, salt three egg yolks and sugar. Press the mixture onto the base of a cake tin.

For the filling, peel, core and cut the apples into chunks. Melt butter in a sauce pan and cook till soft but not mushy. Add 50 grams of the sugar and set aside to cool slightly.

Place fruit on base in cake tin.

For the topping, whip the remaining egg whites mix with the sugar, the teaspoon of lemon juice and a pinch of salt. Cover the fruit with this meringue topping then place the tart in the oven for about 30 minutes at 180 degrees.

Grayshott Heritage Following on from the Victorian era the formative years of our present village started in the 1890s. Hindhead at the same time was beginning to be developed as a 'tourist' resort following Professor Tyndal's public proclamation that ' the air on Hindhead is as good as that of Switzerland'.

The one hour train journey from London made it readily accessible.

It was Grayshott's luck that as the 1890s progressed the demand for goods and services at Hindhead rapidly expanded. With the Post Office established in Grayshott by 1887 this gave the community a head start.

Shops rapidly appeared and soon there were two each of many trades including bakers, butchers, fishmongers, dairy etc., even those selling china and fancy goods were well represented.

A huge demand for building brought in tradesmen from far and wide, bricklayers, plumbers, painters and in the pre mechanical plant days many general laborers were required.

Grayshott: A Prosperous Edwardian Village

Transport was provided in the form of regular deliveries from Haslemere station by carriers wagon. A horse bus and later motor bus ran a regular service to Hindhead and Haslemere. Stabling, animal feeds and blacksmiths work were much in demand from local trades people whose delivery carts were kept busy supplying the needs of Hindhead hotels and the many large houses which had then been recently built on the surrounding area. Many people were employed in the domestic service, gardening and as coachmen. Accommodation in the form of room letting also became widespread. All this added to the general prosperous state of the local economy.

The Fox and Pelican, opened in 1899, catered for the needs of passing tourists with food, refreshments and accommodation not forgetting the thirst of locals and even a small library with books provided by George Bernard Shaw. Various clubs and societies were formed and provided some light relief for residents many of these meeting at the Village Hall. Much of this only being possible through the generosity of local benefactors.

Local Hero Honoured by France Flight Lieutenant Jack Blanchard, DFC., LOH. (Retd.).

In February 2019 the President of France appointed Forestdale resident Jack Blanchard as a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in recognition of his courage and service in the liberation of France. The Legion of Honour is France’s highest distinction and is awarded in recognition of both military and civilian merit.

Jack Blanchard joined RAF Bomber Command Squadron 166 in May 1944. His

first operation on a Lancaster bomber was as second pilot to an experienced crew for a raid on Dortmund. Of Jack’s 30 subsequent operations, as pilot and skipper of Lancaster bomber ‘P for Peter,’ over 20 were against targets in France.

On 6th June 1944 (D-Day) 166 Squadron was briefed to bomb railway junctions at Acheres, north central France, in order to delay German attacks on the Allied invasion forces. Whilst flying over the Channel, through gaps in the layers of low cloud, Jack saw hundreds of barrage balloons, each one tethered to an invasion craft. The balloons were there to deter

attacks by German aircraft. Jack recalls that he did not see another Lancaster during the whole operation.

Following the Acheres operation, Jack Blanchard’s squadron flew operations against German forces, communications and military materiel and also participated in the attacks on the ‘V’ weapons’ launch sites. On 22nd June 1944 Jack squadron took part in the attack on the V3 super-gun site at Mimoyecques in northern France.

Another critically important operation was the successful attack by 166 Squadron, at General Montgomery’s request, on the German ground defences at Caen on 7th July 1944.

Now the holder of the rank of Chevalier in the Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur Jack in a modest and matter of fact way describes the war service of his comrades and himself: “We fought to stop Germany keeping control of France and to stop Germany invading the United Kingdom.”

The Arts Society Grayshott Antique and Contemporary Jewellery On our first Special Interest Day of 2019 Joanna Hardy had given us a fascinating lecture on certain aspects of jewellery. She is an independent fine jewellery specialist with over 35 years experience working in the jewellery industry. Having trained in London as a goldsmith, she became one of the first women to be a polished diamond dealer in Antwerp.

After Philips she moved to Sotheby’s and was their senior jewellery specialist and auctioneer for fourteen years.

Joanna explored how History and Fashion have influenced Jewellery Design. The French revolution of 1789 not only swept away the old regime, but also triggered a series of changes in habits, lifestyles, government, religion and calendar that were felt throughout Europe.

Queen Victoria was expanding her wealthy empire and trade and commerce were flourishing both in France and England. The jewellery trade started to recover with this reversal of fortune and the exciting discoveries of ancient archaeological sites. The opportunities to travel meant that jewellery became an exciting addition to the ever increasing appetite for the new, the exotic and the unusual.

Joanna then discussed the exciting world of Contemporary Jewellery 1960 – 2018. Starting with the revolutionary 1960’s, she explained the importance of new materials coming into the design world such as acrylic (fashionable again today) as well as titanium. She explored value, quality and design in today’s marketplace and gave some inspiring illustrations of how forgotten or unloved jewels can be reworked, transformed and enjoyed once more.

After lunch, the session took the form of a workshop focusing on How to get the most from your Jewellery. Joanna appears regularly on the Antiques Roadshow as a jewellery specialist and our members enjoyed the opportunity to participate in their very own version of the programme. Several members had brought their own jewels along to be assessed as to their value or to discuss the possibilities of having them altered if this was appropriate.

As the afternoon session drew to a close, everyone agreed the day had lived up to expectations.

Grayshott Primary School : an Eco School Your local village school is well on its way to achieving its Eco-Schools ‘Green Flag Award.’ Eco-Schools is a global programme engaging 19.5 million children across 67 countries, making it the largest educational programme on the planet.

In early May, our eco-committee presented their valuable work to the school. They have created an action plan as a result of an in-depth audit of our current facilities and processes. The committee agreed three areas to make improvements: waste, litter and energy.

The children have proposed an overhaul to the waste and recycling procedures by making sure the recycling and rubbish bins are colourcoded and well labelled throughout the school. Additionally, from now on, we will also be separating food waste from other refuse, both from break time snacks and in the kitchen, so that it can be recycled appropriately.

We are also planning a ‘NUDE FOOD’ week, where children are encouraged to bring their food into school in reusable containers hence eliminating the need for any single use plastic.

Members of the eco-committee are now monitoring rooms around the school to ensure that lights and other electrical appliances are turned off when not in use.

The eco-committee have decided to run a litter-picking club at lunchtimes which is already off the ground and proving surprisingly popular!

On 26th April this year, two of the eco-committee (Harry Davies and Anneliese Mosses) attended the Grayshott Parish Council meeting at the village hall. They were able to use the opportunity to inform parish and county councillors and members of the public about our Eco-Schools campaign. Everyone they spoke to was very impressed by their passion and understanding of the value of what we are doing.

Sponsorship Opportunity The eco-committee would love to hear from local businesses who would like to provide sponsorship to aid us on our way. The children would love someone to help with the costs of buying better bins to place around the school or support us with the cost of removing our food waste. Your customers will appreciate the steps you have taken to drive change in the environmental education of young people right here in your local community.
