Thought for the month - Rev. Jeremy Haswell Dear Grayshott, A very happy last few days of Christmas, and New Year to you all. As I write I don’t know the outcome of the election, and still we all wait for the outcomes of many things. However, we can continue to invest in, and build our community locally and consider what this new decade holds for us. 2020 sounds fresh, and also has the ring of the old way of referring to perfect 20/20 vision.

Vision is a word we use in business, in church life and for our own lives, which refers to different things, high level vision is about describing or defining a ‘mark on the horizon’ at which we are aiming. More practically it can be a plan, or even a dream of something that we would love to see come to pass. Personally, I have a vision associated with my calling to ministry, to which I refer periodically, and it gives me a steer on my priorities and can help to give me confidence about the direction we are travelling in as a community here at St Luke’s, and more widely.

Many of us are encouraged to think about a new decade in terms of goals, ‘new year’s resolutions’ suddenly become ‘new decade resolutions’… scary! All the classic studies of people’s ability to stick to a resolution are well publicised; but it is much more helpful to think about who we are than what we will do. In a radio programme about will power the news reader Louise Minchin said that thinking of herself as a Triathlete was when she was able to overcome the inertia that resisted training. As a child having failed grade 3 piano, I believed I couldn’t play the piano, so never persevered. In my 30’s, inspired by Bill Murray in the film Groundhog Day, I set myself a ten year goal. ‘To be able to have fun sitting at the piano.’ I had one rule. Never to judge myself as a failure, every mistake became a lesson in how not to do it. I never left the piano with a negative emotion. I just kept going. 26 years later I can indeed sit at the piano and play by ear, simple songs and improvise.

In life we tend to judge ourselves and disqualify ourselves from things.

Let’s change all that, and have a go in 2020. We at St Lukes’ see ourselves as Grayshott’s church, where anyone can come in, and start where you are spiritually. Come and learn, about God, about worship, about prayer, about yourselves. The Gospel of Jesus, is good news for everyone. You are invited to just come and ‘be’ with no pressure and no judgement. Come and learn with us.

Make 2020 a new adventure.

Transport Survey With this edition of Grayshott Today an insert is included – Survey on Transport Needs. Please take the time to complete and return the survey to the parish council, even if you feel your needs are being met.

We are keen to understand the transport needs of our residents and to determine whether there is sufficient and sustainable demand to make additional transport services viable. The survey points to some existing transport services that you may not be aware of. The survey is also available from grayshott.com and should be returned to us by 31 st January. Thank you.

Annual Assembly and Village Priorities In January Councillors will be planning priorities for the next financial year. If you have any thoughts on what those should be please get in touch. We will also be planning for the Parish Assembly on Friday April 24th at 8pm at which we hope to see you. If there is a topic you would like to be covered please let us know.

Traffic Volumes and Speeds The speed limit reminder sign, the parish council co-owns with two other parishes, will be back in Grayshott on January 6 th. The sign will be located on Headley Road close to Chestnut Close for a fortnight.

The sign will face traffic travelling into the Village in the 30mph stretch as they approach the start of the 20mph zone. The sign will record the volume of traffic and the speeds in which they travel by time of day.

In February the sign will be back for a fortnight close to St Joseph’s Church on Headley Road.

Finally, we would like to welcome all new residents at Applegarth Vale.

We understand that by the New Year, 71 of the 80 units will be occupied.

Community News and Events Wednesday 8th January 2020 Club Night Lecture We are delighted to welcome Sarah Squires to the club this month and look forward to her talk on Running a Garden Centre .

Sarah’s grandfather D.J. Squire founded the family business 82 years ago. Now, following on from her father, Colin Squires, she has been appointed as chairman. Her talk will let us behind the scenes and maybe discover some secrets of this thriving family business.

Thank You and Goodbye to Hadley Bennet After ten years’ of service, initially as a curate, in St Luke’s, Hadley is moving to Oxford to complete her doctorate.

We all wish her and her family the very best. They have made a huge contribution to village and church life.

Grayshott Tea Party The Grayshott Tea Party has just come to the end of its 6th year of monthly tea parties in Grayshott Village Hall. Each month the members meet to hear a talk, followed by sandwiches, cakes and a cup of tea. Previous talks have included The Red Arrows, Guildford Cathedral, Beekeeping, Easter Traditions, A Trek to Tibet and many more varied subjects.

In August this year, Sandhya Banerjee came along to the Tea Party and gave a talk on saris. She bought along lots of different colours of sari and explained when each would be worn and how to put on a sari. The Grayshott Tea Party members enjoyed a two course Christmas lunch recently, when the volunteers cooked and served a turkey lunch with all the trimmings followed by Christmas pudding, trifle or chocolate roulade, then coffee and mince pies. Everything was delicious and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The Grayshott Stagers provided music, songs and carols after lunch for everyone to join in. New members are always welcome to the monthly Tea Party, the first visit is free then membership is £15 per year plus a small charge for the afternoon tea each month. The Tea Party meets on the first Tuesday of the month at Grayshott Village Hall at 2pm.

Grayshott Scout Troop 2020 Relaunch Grayshott Scout Group have been at the heart of the local community for more than 100 years, helping the young people of Grayshott develop skills for life – self-confidence, teamwork, resourcefulness, and pride in their community – through practical activities, adventure, and most of all fun. In recent years, and despite healthy numbers in their Cub (8-10½yrs) and Beaver (68yrs) sections, the Scout troop has suffered from a lack of numbers and adult leaders. Now, with a new leadership team on board, the Scouts section for 10½-14 year olds has been relaunched and is looking forward to starting 2020 with an exciting programme of activities such as first aid, navigation, adventure sports, and camping.

Scouts will run on Wednesday evenings at the Jubilee Hut on Whitmore Vale Road and there are still some spaces available. If you, or a 10½-14 year old you know, would like to get involved please call Tony on 07818 013189 or visit www.GrayshottScouts.org.uk - it’s open to boys and girls.

It’s Not Just for Kids! You can start 2020 with a resolution to get involved in the worldwide movement of Scouting. Our adult helpers get just as much fun from contributing their skills and enthusiasm to the group – offering Grayshott’s young people unique opportunities, supporting the local community and meeting like-minded people. Plus, you might just learn something new yourself!

In 2019 we were delighted to be nominated as a recipient of the Co-op's Local Community Fund initiative this year, and we have recently been awarded more than £2,000 under this scheme.

This will help the relaunch of our scout troop in January, and fund even more adventures and activities for our young people.

At other times of the year you can convert it into a chocolate brownie ice cream or an Oreo cookie ice cream and so on. If leaving the alcohol out, just add a little bit more sugar to stop mixture freezing solid.

Christmas cake ice-cream

Serves 2-4 110g Christmas cake, crumbled

2 tbs Madeira (or brandy, Marsala, dessert wine, ginger wine etc) 290ml double cream 25g icing sugar 250g fresh ready made custard



Soak the cake in the Madeira.



Whip the cream until it just holds its shape/forms soft peaks.



Sift in icing sugar and mix in custard and cake.



Freeze .

Remember to remove from freezer at least 10 minutes before serving.

To get a smoother texture freeze the mixture without the cake in until it is half frozen, whiz in a Magimix and freeze again with the cake stirred through.

Grayshott Concerts Our world premiere – in the words of a member of the audience, Harriet Posner The contrasts could not have been greater. On Friday 29 th November, I was privileged to attend the world premiere of Miserere: Songs of Mercy and Redemption, the latest work by Sir Karl Jenkins. Otherwise known as the world’s most performed living composer, the work was performed by an astonishing array of world-famous classical musicians.

Even the music itself had a mix of ethnic flavours from across the world and texts from across the centuries. But the contrast hit me even before a note was played.

For the setting of the first complete live performance of this work was not the Albert Hall or Carnegie Hall, New York, but deep in the Hampshire countryside in the tiny village of Grayshott in the serene and acoustic perfection of St Luke’s Church. Bringing together some of the concert world’s most sought-after performers including Polyphony Choir, Britten Sinfonia and international countertenor Iestyn Davies under Stephen Layton, was no mean feat for the village charity, Grayshott Concerts, which only began staging events in 2004.

But they also managed to entice other exceptional talent to the stage: Young African cellist and vocalist Abel Selaocoe; Royal Harpist to HRH Prince of Wales Alis Huws; Iraqi-born ethnic vocalist, Baidar Al Basri; and Welsh treble, Cai Thomas, finalist in 2019 BBC Young Chorister of the Year.

And the packed St Luke’s audience were blessed indeed. It seems unlikely that this group of exceptional artists, exactly as on the charttopping CD (with the exception of harpist Alis Huws standing in for an injured Catrin Finch), will ever appear together again, live, for this impressive work.

Hindhead Health : Our New private GP Practice Situated just behind the Edge on Woolmer Hill Road our new local private practice shares its clinical premises with the long established and respected physio clinic in the same building. The two doctors who run it offer a private G.P. surgery intended to work as a supplement to N.H.S. services offering access to treatments that are either not available on the N.H.S. or that would take much longer to employ. Both doctors also work for the NHS. The practitioners at Hindhead Health can give more time to, and therefore have improved communication with, their patients. As a consequence, the service they offer is very personal and much swifter, with appointments usually given within twenty four hours.

Dr Susie Cooper qualified in 1993 at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School.

She went on to train in General medicine and Rheumatology in various London hospitals (The Whittington, Ealing Hospital, Charing Cross Hospital, Kings College Hospital and Lewisham Hospital.) She became a GP in 2001 and then moved out to Surrey where she lives with her husband and four children. She has continued to work as a GP most recently in Farnham and Aldershot but has maintained her interest in Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal medicine by doing hospital Rheumatology at Frimley Park Hospital. Dr Cooper is especially interested in maintaining health through holistic healthcare and particularly in the role of exercise in health. She enjoys educating and lecturing other GP’s and is also a governor at a local school. She is a keen trail and road runner and also enjoys cycling and yoga .

Dr Jo Hobbs qualified from St Thomas’s Hospital, London, in 1991. She went on to train and work as a GP in Guildford, Camberley, Haslemere and Liphook. She is experienced in mental health and is interested in stress related illness, depression and anxiety. She also has an interest in the management of migraine and headache. Dr Hobbs has specific training in women’s health and is happy to discuss any of your needs in this area including family planning and HRT. Dr Hobbs lives in West Sussex, is married with four children; she enjoys swimming, walking her two dogs and keeping chickens.

Hindhead Health : Our New private GP Practice Dr Cooper and Dr Hobbs decided to form a partnership when they were introduced by a mutual friend and who was about to retire. Local doctor, Dr Nicky Leigh whose practice was in Haslemere, was looking for someone to whom she would feel comfortable handing over her patients to and she was quick to realise the potential this new partnership had to offer.

Dr Cooper’s and Dr Hobbs’ areas of expertise complement one another, and they share very similar ideas about the ethos that they wanted to implement in their new practice. This practice should afford the time and space to build caring personal doctor patient relationships. A combined interest in sports medicine also means they set out to promote an active lifestyle. The idea is also to offer excellent personal care without hidden costs. They do not charge unnecessarily for extras and most things are included in the consultation fee including writing prescriptions, although the drugs themselves have to be paid for. Some drugs actually cost less than the standard prescription charge. Having more time with their patients will also enable them to follow through on connected and what may appear unconnected patient concerns.

The superbly equipped clinical environment they are working from will also allow some tests and monitoring to take place on the spot rather than having to send patients away to other environments. Vaccines for things not covered by the NHS are available, although the surgery will need advance notice to enable them to be ordered in. Things like the shingles vaccine [only available to some age groups] or the meningitis vaccine or the HPV vaccine for boys are already becoming very popular.

Appointments can be made easily via the website or you can telephone one of the receptionists. Consultations are £60 for 15 minutes and £ 90 for half an hour.

The Passion Flower Several plants have religious connotations, so it is probably appropriate to include one in our church and village magazine.

The “Passion Flower” is such a plant and thereby hangs a tale.

This tendril bearing vine, in the family Passifloraceae, to which the Passion Flower “Passiflora” belongs, contains about 350-400 different species. Most of those are found in Central America, Mexico and the south of Brazil.

They are mainly tropical, but one, Passiflora caerulea is hardier and will happily grow and flower in the U.K. That said, for some unknown reason, the one we have grown for years in Grayshott on a south facing wall, in an ideal position, has rampant vegetative growth but has stubbornly refused to flower over the past two years. It has had its chance and must now be replaced to make room for something different.

The tale of the Passion Flower has deep religious significance and runs something like this: Amongst the early travellers in Mexico in the 16th and 17th centuries were Catholic monks and missionaries. In 1610 an Augustinian friar returned to Rome with some drawings of the amazing Passion Flowers with its Christian legend already built around their complex structure.

There was an element of disbelief in the plant’s existence, until later travellers returned to verify the botany and the religious story has lived on. The Christians believed that the painted tips of the leaves represented the lance used to wound Christ on the cross. The tendrils were the whips used to flagellate him. The five petals and five sepals represented the 10 faithful apostles with Peter and Judas being excluded.

The Passion Flower The corona of about 72 thin blue and white threads is the crown of thorns. The ovary is the chalice and the receptacle the hammer used to drive in the three nails represented by the three styles/stimas. There are five anthers, and these are the wounds on Christ’s body and finally the blue and white colours of Passiflora caerulea represent heaven and purity.

Flowers are produced [on other people’s Passion Vines!] over a long period in summer to early autumn. The plant can grow from 6-30 ft high and can become quite rampant. Some suggest that the roots can be restricted in a buried container and that this encourages flowering.

Established plants may be cut back annually and respond to training on a framework of lattice or wires. Passiflora caerulea will produce large, orange/ yellow, oval fruit.

Passiflora edulis, is now grown commercially for its fruit throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Those in Grayshott Co-op came from Colombia!

P. caerulea is subject to frost but will survive our winters outside in a sheltered spot. It responds to moist, fertile soil. Propagation is by layering in spring, soft wood cuttings and semi-ripe wood in the summer. Luckily the Passion Flower is relatively free from pests and diseases.

To attract visitors’ attention when they arrive at your door, plant a Passion Flower. It makes a talking point even for the nonhorticulturally minded.

Breakfasts in Grayshott

Breakfast at Applegarth

We are so well served with restaurants in Grayshott. We have Indian cuisine at The Bayleaf, Nepalese at the Gurkha Durbar, the Village Cafe, Grayshott Pottery, The Red Rose Tearoom, The Fox and Pelican and of course Applegarth.

That’s not to forget Frankie’s, that serves the best fish and chips in the area. Over the years, eating out has become more and more popular, but unfortunately it has become increasingly expensive. And usually, the costs shoot up with accompanying bottles of wine and beers.

One way of compromising is still to eat out, but to meet up over breakfast.

Not many people want curry for breakfast and so, sensibly, the Gurkha and The Bayleaf are not open. Similarly, there’s not much demand for fish and chips and so Frankie’s remains closed. Those that do open vary in ambiance, menu choices, opening times and, to some extent quality.

As a bacon and egg fiend, I’ve based my opinion on the quality and cooking of these mainstay items plus coffee and service.

Only the Village Cafe is open for the early birds at 7.00am weekdays and 8.30am on Sundays. Perhaps a little early for a social get together, but there are always plenty of customers. David, who opened the Cafe some three years ago, has blended into the village scene and his staff give a fast and efficient service. It is a cafe and thus the atmosphere is quite different to Grayshott’s other restaurants. Compared with others, its menu has a plethora of choices, all of which are available any time of day - from the traditional bacon, sausage, baked beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, eggs - fried, poached or scrambled, to a variety of omelettes and even Spaghetti Bolognaise if that’s what you want. Plus there’s plenty for vegetarians.

Breakfasts in Grayshott The food is generally good, the eggs are great, but sometimes the bacon appears not to be freshly cooked and black pudding is dry.

However, the tea is strong and the coffee is first-class, perhaps the best available in the Village. The fact that the Village Cafe is open 7 days a week has made it quite a social centre of Grayshott, particularly for the Grayshott Mafia who can be seen sitting outside come rain or snow on most days.

The Red Rose Tearoom opens at 9.00am and serves an excellent breakfast. Perhaps not quite such a wide selection as the Village Cafe, but everything is freshly cooked and very affordable... The bacon is excellent and the scrambled eggs are without doubt the best you’ll find for miles around. The Red Rose is the only restaurant of all those in this article that serves boiled eggs with toast soldiers. There’s also a healthy option of porridge with blueberries or banana. The coffee is good and there’s a wide Breakfast at Red Rose selection of herbal teas.

Service is friendly and quick, always with a smile. As the Red Rose is a tea room, it has a tempting selection of pastries and delicious cakes for those with a breakfast sweet tooth.

Grayshott Pottery’s main business is not its cafe and so one would not expect this side of their business to be on par with the other establishments mentioned here.

Breakfasts in Grayshott Both the Pottery and cafe open at 9.00am and before or after eating breakfast, the shop is a must to visit, full of unusual items - an Aladdin's cave and a treasure trove of gifts.

When it comes to breakfast, it’s not surprising that it lacks the variety found in the other Grayshott restaurants, However, it is a peaceful and quiet location for an early morning meeting, social or business. Hidden away from the main thoroughfare , it doesn’t seem to attract the same numbers for breakfast, but it can be manic at lunchtime.

Last but certainly not least, there’s Applegarth Farm restaurant. Breakfast at Applegarth is a bit special. As with the other Grayshott restaurants, there’s a quality full English, with streaky bacon, sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes and fried potatoes plus eggs as you want them, but it’s the other breakfast menu items that make Applegarth stand out: for example, the vegetarian full English with hummus, guacamole, grilled halloumi, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms with sourdough bread; home made soda bread with sliced avocado and poached eggs; then there’s ‘Baghdad Eggs’, eggs baked on Khobez flatbread, finished with zaatar & live yoghurt - all something to experience. There are also healthy options such as porridge and Preparing breakfast at granola. The coffee is good so are the variety of Applegarth other drinks available. Service at Applegarth is always with a smile, but sometimes a tad slow. Then again, everything is freshly prepared.

There are not many villages that can boast such a selection of breakfast venues and variety of dishes, so make a point of giving them all a try - they are well worth it.

Grayshott Primary School :Junior Road Safety Officers We are the Junior Road Safety Officers at Grayshott CE Primary School.

Our role is to raise awareness of road safety in our school and local community. Recently, two of us went on a training day at Macdonald Botley Park Hotel. It was really interesting because we got to learn lots of new things and it gave us so many ideas to share with the rest of the school.

We took part in activities such as designing a T-shirt on the theme of ‘ Be Bright, Be Seen’, we recorded our own road safety radio advert and also got to watch some videos which showed people who have been affected by incidents on the road. It really made us think how important road safety is. Last year we had many events at our school to promote road safety and we have also made some changes to our school site. Here are some examples of what we have done so far: - We had a ‘Be Bright, Be Seen’ day where we all had to come to school dressed in bright and colourful clothes. This reminded us of the importance of being seen near roads.

- We held a competition asking children to think of a slogan to go on a banner outside our school gates to try and encourage parents to park considerately. The winning entry was ‘Be a mate, park away from our gate’. Hampshire County Council kindly made this slogan into a banner which is now displayed outside our school for everyone to see.

- In the spring term, the JRSOs worked together to choose a new bicycle and scooter shelter so that we all have somewhere we can store our bikes and scooters if we use them to travel to school. It’s amazing to see how many people make use of it.

- Last term we took part in the nationwide ‘Walk to School Week’.

Children were encouraged to walk or cycle to school every day to try and reduce the amount of traffic around our school. We were really impressed with how many people joined in.

- We have just had new markings put on our school car park so that children can cross safely from one building to the other. We have already planned to lead some assemblies so we can share some road safety ideas with the rest of the school, and in January we will be holding another ‘Be Bright, Be Seen’ day. As you can see, we have already achieved so much at our school and want to continue achieving 19 more this year!

Grayshott Arts Society Behind the Scenes at the Royal Opera House The Arts Society Grayshott This December we welcomed Sarah Lenton to take us on a virtual reality trip round the Royal Opera House. Sarah spent her working life in the theatre, mainly at the Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne and English National Opera. There are two companies at the Opera House – the Royal Ballet and the Royal Opera House and a different show staged each night plus the regular matinees. The Opera House is fortunate to have a stage made of five pallets. Scenery can be set off stage and slid on as the previous pallet comes off into a rehearsal studio. She explained how something like the tree in the Nutcracker actually gets bigger on stage. Its full height can be accommodated under the stage and then it grows up from under the stage as the story progresses. The Nutcracker could involve as many as fifteen princes and thirteen sugar Plum Fairies and the costume rails need to be meticulously indexed.

Many theatres still rely on the 19th Century model of fly system or rigging to raise the stage cloth. In the past, the stage crews working this were often ex sailors who had the sailing ship skills. The Opera House renovations have meant it has the benefit of a more digitized system and stage elevator. In the snow scene, the, bags of ‘snow’ suspended from the two bars have holes in them and as the bars move, the snow falls through and wafts downwards. Unless, as has happened, something is amiss and the snowfall becomes a snowstorm!

Ballerinas need to warm up in the wings after having had rehearsals that afternoon and so are ready to perform in the evening. Sarah emphasized how a ballet dancer learns a role with the help of a face-to-face demonstration from a previous performer. Little gestures are worked on intensively. Our first meeting of 2020 is on Thursday January 9, at 2pm in Grayshott Village Hall. In ‘Turner v Constable: The Great British Paint Off”, Nicola Moorby will search for the Star Painter. How recent is Your Will?

Does it qualify for the new tax allowance Residence Nil Rate Band?

You have worked hard for everything you have, a Will enables you to provide for those you love.

An out of date or badly written Will can cause distress, needless expense and often legal disputes in the family as well as higher levels of tax. It really is worth doing the job properly.

If you do not have a Will the State distributes your assets and often tax is higher.

If your Will is several years old:  The Residence Nil Rate Band is worth a lot in tax saving but only applies in certain circumstances.

Your Will should be checked..  Births, marriages, divorces, and deaths may mean your Will is out of date.  The law has changed considerably in the last 10 years.

Home Made Wills are often disastrous: The State’s distribution of your assets may not be what you would like and very often results in a higher tax:  Children have inheritance rights. A legally married spouse may not inherit enough.  A long term partner (who is not a spouse or registered civil partner) does not inherit anything.  If no guardian is appointed by Will orphaned 

children are the responsibility of the Local Authority.

A family member who inherits may lose State Benefits.

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA)  Are not only for the elderly.  We are all at risk from illness or accident particularly those who travel or do risky sports.  An LPA for financial matters permits your chosen attorneys to manage your affairs.  An LPA for health matters permits your attorneys to speak for you if you are too ill to make decisions or speak for yourself. Thus matters such as medical treatment and even ‘Care’ are decided by those who are close to you.  If we are unable to act for ourselves and there is no LPA even a joint bank account is frozen and all our financial matters grind to a halt.  A policy of ‘wait and see’ can be disastrous. You can only sign when you have full capacity.

Lesley MacLennan, who lives at Huntington House in Hindhead, Surrey, moved to London in her early twenties after her mother spotted her potential before making her way to Paris, where she worked closely with designer Yves Saint Laurent – then an emerging designer – and later with him at Dior, both on the catwalk and in front of the camera.

Now aged 85, she met James (a well known photographer), who lives in Farnham, when he was visiting a friend at the home. He was immediately struck by her “beautiful hands and the way she carries herself” and visualised capturing her ‘poise and class’.

Following the shoot, Lesley said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the photo shoot – James made me feel perfectly at ease, he was the real McCoy! I would have said so if he wasn’t! The red and black outfit was so vibrant, it was stunning.”

Charlie Hoare, director of the Huntington and Langham Estate where Huntington House is based, said: “It’s been wonderful to hear Lesley’s memories of her modelling days and to see her back in front of the camera was just incredible – she’s never lost her sparkle.
