Adam, Noah, & Abraham Generations Between FAMILY TREE

The genealogies in Genesis 5 and 11 give unusual detail about the 10 generations between Adam and Noah and the 10 generations between Noah and Abraham. Consider the people recording this information and these forebearers imagining their descendants, 5,000 years later. They likely knew people would doubt their very existences. and tried to provide the future generations with the necessary information to authenticate their stories. Despite the probability that the way time being measured would change significantly, these ancient people provided a comprehensive record of their live, records that provide great insight into the reality of their presence.

What better way to communicate to future generation than with an exact count of the years of life, plus the years before parenthood, to give us an exact year-based history of generations?

Despite these amazing records, we don’t actually know the exact year Adam was created. This birth chart was back-engineered, starting with the birth date of Abraham, which is less debated (but only slightly less!).

The Matthew genealogy is considered Old Testament history because all names save Mary, Joseph, and Jesus, are from pre-New Testament times. Here are the legal generations between Abraham and Jesus, presented in Matthew 1. While this list does not try to assign individual years to the dates, each person’s birth order can be seen within their eras.

FAMILY TREE Luke Genealogy, Adam to Jesus

This genealogy, found in Luke 3, differs from the one in Matthew in several ways. First, it extends all the way back to Adam, whereas Matthew’s stops at Abraham. (This one contains an additional 2,000 years.) Second, the Matthew genealogy appears to be the LEGAL genealogy of Jesus, whereas Luke’s is likely BLOODLINE. In ancient times, the legal custody of children was often rearranged due to the regular occurrence of early parent deaths—women in childbirth, men in accidents, and both in illness. Hence children were legally transferred to others according to Levitical law to create a legal line like the one in Matthew, whereas this contained birth parents.

Moses was not in the line of Jesus. nor were any of the prophets.

However, all the kings of Judah were.

Generation 32, Boaz, is the man Ruth married from the Book of Ruth, making her the great-grandmother of King David.

Generation 31, Salmon, became the husband of Rahab the harlot, who helped the spies of Israel in Jericho: Joshua 2-6. She became the mother of Boaz, and therefore the great-great-grandmother of King David.

The most common letter to start a name in Bible times was J. There are 16 J-names in Jesus’ line—including Jesus! In Hebrew, the letter J is pronounced Y, as in YO-seph.

There are around 1,000 years between each of Adam, Noah, Abraham, David, and Jesus. The Age of Grace has been 2,000 years.

That’s a total of 6,000 years. Strangely, even most secular humanists agree that recorded history goes back around 5,000 years.

In ancient times, early deaths of parents were a regular occurrence—women in childbirth, men in accidents, and both in illness. Hence children were legally shuffled according to Levitical law to create a legal line like Matthew’s, whereas this would contain birth parents.

JUDGES OF ISRAEL (1350-1050 BC)

The judges ruled Israel from the end of Joshua’s conquests until the time when people asked for a king. God retained the office of king for himself, but had ultimately established the judges to lead the nation of Israel. Judges were encouraged to obtain wisdom from God Himself, judge righteously, and help the people find favor with God. As is common with human nature, however, some judges were good while others were horrific.

Kings of Israel & Judah after the Split (951-585

In 951 BC, the Israelite kingdom split over a situation we are all familiar with to this day—taxes! When King Rehoboam raised King Solomon’s already-high taxes, some of the tribes rebelled dividing the kingdom. The tribes of Benjamin and Judah stayed with Rehoboam and became the Kingdom of Judah, also known as the Southern Kingdom. The other 10 tribes departed and established their own king Jeroboam, and became known as the Northern Kingdom. This graph represents the kings of Israel and Judah during this period between the split and the Babylonian Exile (951-585) BC.

In 722 BC, Assyria invaded Israel and took all 10 tribes captive, sending them to settle in other countries throughout Mesopotamia.

They were absorbed into those cultures and never returned.

No one knows who they are today; however, DNA testing has created a resurgence of curiosity.

MINOR PROPHETS (700–450 BC)

The Old Testament contains writings from 12 minor prophets and four major prophets. They wrote from the 8th through the 4th centuries BC. Their backgrounds are an intriguing part of Jewish history that every Christian should know. However, it’s also important to know at a glance what each was known for and how they differ. Below are one or two lines about each of the 12 minor prophets that make them special and help distinguish them from the others.

Hosea was told by God to marry a woman who was an unfaithful prostitute, so that he could see what it was like for God to be “married” to the nation of Israel. Hosea prophesied around the same time as Isaiah.

Joel prophesied in length about the “Day of the Lord,” which can be a name for the Second Coming of Christ. Therefore, some of his prophecies seem futuristic, though the term can also mean any day God serves justice. The Apostle Peter quoted him in his first sermon at Pentecost, Acts 2:16-17.

Amos was a shepherd, which was unusual as most prophets did not have any other occupation. Amos predicted the overthrow of the Kingdom of Israel by the Assyrians, which happened in 722 BC, forty years after his prophecy.

Obadiah wrote the shortest book in the Old Testament. It is an exclusive prophecy warning the nation of Edom. We don’t know more about him specifically, because 12 different Obadiahs are mentioned in the Bible.

Jonah is famous for being swallowed by the great fish after refusing to preach repentance to Nineveh. When he finally went to Nineveh and preached, the people did repent.

Micah prophesied early, foretelling the Assyrian invasion of the northern Kingdom of Israel. It came to pass between 10 and 15 years later, in 722 BC.

Nahum prophesied exclusively about another nation Nineveh. This was about 150 years after Jonah’s traveled there. This time however, Nineveh refused to repent after invading Israel and wreaking havoc.

Habakkuk uttered heartfelt prayers to God in this book, consisting of only three chapters. The prophecies were God’s responses, specifically about the coming invasion of Babylon upon Judah.

Zephaniah is most famous for his many uses of the term “Day of the Lord” in a book that is only three chapters long. His prophecies can apply to many eras, including our future and the end times.

Haggai is best known for being the only Old Testament prophet that Israel listened to. He prophesied after the Babylonian exile had ended and people were striving, often unsuccessfully, to rebuild Solomon’s temple.

Zechariah is most famous for his two predictions, one of Christ coming to Jerusalem on a donkey (9:9) and Judas betraying him for 30 pieces of silver (11:13-15). He spoke much about the coming Messiah.

Malachi is most famous for ending his five-chapter book with a prediction that John the Baptist would have the spirit of Elijah, a passage misinterpreted by the Jews.

Hosea Joel Amos

MAJOR PROPHETS (700-550 BC)

Four major prophets wrote five books of prophecy, as Jeremiah wrote two books: The Book of Jeremiah and the Lamentations of Jeremiah. To Christian scholars, the status of major prophet only means that prophet was more prolific, writing in more detail about more events.

Isaiah prophesied early but spoke of both the Assyrian invasion of Israel and the Babylonian invasion of Judah 200 years later. He is most known for prophecies about the Messiah and their extraordinary harmony with the life of Jesus.

Jeremiah prophesied from about 40 years before the Babylonian invasion to the time that it actually occurred. He is one of the few Bible prophets that lived to see his prophecies come true. He is called the lamenting prophet because his words captured God’s angry and sad sides.

Ezekiel is most famous for his prophecies known as Ezekiel’s Wheel, which some believe bear a remarkable resemblance to a UFO. However, Ezekiel also wrote of the restoration of Israel in 1948 and gave other end-times prophesies.

Daniel is most famous for his stories about Daniel in the lions’ den and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace. But his end-times prophecies are equally intriguing. He introduced numbers such as those according “time, times and half a time.”

The I AM Statements of CHRIST

The seven I AM statements of Christ are singular to the Book of John. John was most interested in making clear the identity of Christ, and these statements help us to understand Christ’s divinity. There is an eighth I AM statement that doesn’t necessarily fit within the same context as the seven. Hence it is herein called the BONUS I AM STATEMENT.

John 14:6-7

John 15:1-2 John 8:58

I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

I AM THE GATE FOR THE SHEEP. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.

I AM THE GOOD SHEPHERD. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.

I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE. No one comes to the Father except through me.

I AM THE TRUE VINE, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit, he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.

Abraham was, I AM.

THE TIMES JESUS GOT ANGRY (AND AT WHOM)

The times that Jesus was angry can be very telling. What aroused His anger in the Gospels is likely still problematic today. Below are most of the times Christ showed anger as recorded in the Gospels. We may want to ask ourselves what this can tell us about where we need to focus our spiritual growth?

Scripture

John 2:13-22

Matthew 21:12-17 (also found in Mark 11:15-19, and Luke 19:45-48)

Mark 3:1-6

Matthew 21:18-19

Seven woes to religious leadership, each known for starting with "woe to you…hypocrites!"

Temple Salesmen Greed/ Corruption

Temple Salesmen Greed/ Corruption

Jesus was about to heal a man and perceived that religious leadership was fixated on the idea that he was "breaking" the Sabbath.

Religious Leaders Hypocrisy

You cannot serve both God and mammon. These people were so fixated on the earthly money that they forgot about the spiritual sacrifice and its meaning. Followers who focus mostly on increasing their wealth will find God doesn’t help them.

This is the greatest anger shown by Christ. A cover-term for their egregious hypocrisy was acquiring a life of comfort for themselves while those people around them suffered.

Religious Leaders Legalism/ Lack of Mercy

Matthew 16:21-23

Jesus cursed a fig tree that was not bearing fruit, and it withered.

Followers (symbolically) Failing to mature spiritually

Jesus healed because he loved and had compassion. That someone would put rules above love really bothered him. That someone would prefer judging rather than healing really bothered him also.

Peter exclaimed that he would not let people kill Jesus, and Jesus said, "Get behind me, Satan!'

Disciples Seeing things through the world's eyes instead of seeking God’s vision

Jesus did this as a sign of what would become of believers who couldn't mature in their faith, not achieving an ever-improving recording of "deny yourselves, take up your cross daily…"

Our view is not always God’s. God's view of the world (and what we should be doing daily) is only recognized through diligently seeking him daily (Hebrews 11:6).

Luke 9:37-41

The disciples could not cast out a demon and Jesus replied with a sharp rebuke for lack of faith.

Disciples Lack of faith/lack of vision

This is only one example of Jesus' annoyance at people who couldn't believe in God's power and love. But as the disciples missed here, it also shows a challenge. Only those playing out God’s visions are entitled to the promise of “Ask whatever you wish…”

JESUS’ 12 DISCIPLES THEIR LIVES & DEATHS

The 12 disciples brought the Word of God and teachings of the Holy Spirit throughout the known world after Christ returned to heaven. However, most people know very little about their lives after the Ascension. This list gives basic information about these special men. Although the order of their calling is unclear after Matthew/Levi, the complete list in Luke 6:12-16 is assumed to provide the order.

Other Names/Identity

Younger brother of Simon Peter

Older brother of John the Apostle

Younger brother of James, best friend of Andrew

Scythia, the land area located around the Black and the Caspian Seas

Crucified upside down in Rome

Crucified at Patras, Greece on an X-shaped cross

Slain with a sword by Herod's orders in Jerusalem
